The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything."
Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with you."
[Taken from JN 4:25-26]
"It is the spirit that gives life, while the
flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit
and life." [JN 6:63]
The Jews were looking for him at the feast and
saying, "Where is he?" And there was considerable
murmuring about him in the crowds. Some said, "He is a good
man," (while) others said, "No; on the contrary, he
misleads the crowd." Still, no one spoke openly about him
because they were afraid of the Jews. [JN 7:11-13]
The Jews were amazed and said, "How does he
know scripture without having studied?" Jesus answered them
and said, "My teaching is not my own but is from the one who
sent me. Whoever chooses to do his will shall know whether my
teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own. Whoever speaks
on his own seeks his own glory, but whoever seeks the glory of the
one who sent him is truthful, and there is no wrong in him. Did
not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are
you trying to kill me?" The crowd answered, "You are
possessed! Who is trying to kill you?" Jesus answered and
said to them, "I performed one work and all of you are amazed
because of it. Moses gave you circumcision - not that it came from
Moses but rather from the patriarchs - and you circumcise a man on
the sabbath. If a man can receive circumcision on a sabbath so
that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me
because I made a whole person well on a sabbath? Stop judging by
appearances, but judge justly." So some of the inhabitants of
Jerusalem said, "Is he not the one they are trying to kill?
And look, he is speaking openly and they say nothing to him. Could
the authorities have realized that he is the Messiah? But we know
where he is from. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where
he is from." So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was
teaching and said, "You know me and also know where I am
from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom
you do not know, is true. I know him, because I am from him, and
he sent me." So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a
hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come. But many of the
crowd began to believe in him, and said, "When the Messiah
comes, will he perform more signs than this man has done?" [JN
7:15-31]
Some in the crowd who heard these words said,
"This is truly the Prophet." Others said, "This is
the Messiah." But others said, "The Messiah will not
come from Galilee, will he? Does not scripture say that the
Messiah will be of David's family and come from Bethlehem, the
village where David lived?" So a division occurred in the
crowd because of him. Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but
no one laid hands on him. So the guards went to the chief priests
and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why did you not bring
him?" The guards answered, "Never before has anyone
spoken like this one." So the Pharisees answered them,
"Have you also been deceived? Have any of the authorities or
the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know
the law, is accursed." Nicodemus, one of their members who
had come to him earlier, said to them, "Does our law condemn
a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is
doing?" They answered and said to him, "You are not from
Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from
Galilee." [JN 7:40-52]
Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am
the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life." So the Pharisees
said to him, "You testify on your own behalf, so your
testimony cannot be verified." Jesus answered and said to
them, "Even if I do testify on my own behalf, my testimony
can be verified, because I know where I came from and where I am
going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
You judge by appearances, but I do not judge anyone. And even if I
should judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone, but it
is I and the Father who sent me. Even in your law it is written
that the testimony of two men can be verified. I testify on my
behalf and so does the Father who sent me." So they said to
him, "Where is your father?" Jesus answered, "You
know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my
Father also." He spoke these words while teaching in the
treasury in the temple area. But no one arrested him, because his
hour had not yet come. [JN 8:12-20]
He said to them again, "I am going away and
you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am
going you cannot come." So the Jews said, "He is not
going to kill himself, is he, because he said, 'Where I am going
you cannot come'?" He said to them, "You belong to what
is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but
I do not belong to this world. That is why I told you that you
will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you
will die in your sins." So they said to him, "Who are
you?" Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the
beginning. I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the
one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the
world." They did not realize that he was speaking to them of
the Father. So Jesus said (to them), "When you lift up the
Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing
on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me. The one who
sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do
what is pleasing to him." Because he spoke this way, many
came to believe in him. [JN 8:21-30]
They answered and said to him, "Our father
is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's
children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. But now you are
trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard
from God; Abraham did not do this. You are doing the works of your
father!" (So) they said to him, "We are not
illegitimate. We have one Father, God." Jesus said to them,
"If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from
God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me. Why do
you not understand what I am saying? Because you cannot bear to
hear my word. You belong to your father the devil and you
willingly carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from
the beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no
truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because
he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I speak the
truth, you do not believe me. Can any of you charge me with sin?
If I am telling the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever
belongs to God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not
listen, because you do not belong to God." [Taken from JN 8:39-47]
So a second time they called the man who had
been blind and said to him, "Give God the praise! We know
that this man is a sinner." He replied, "If he is a
sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I was blind and
now I see." So they said to him, "What did he do to you?
How did he open your eyes?" He answered them, "I told
you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it
again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?" They
ridiculed him and said, "You are that man's disciple; we are
disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not
know where this one is from." The man answered and said to
them, "This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where
he is from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not
listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, he
listens to him. It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes
of a person born blind. If this man were not from God, he would
not be able to do anything." They answered and said to him,
"You were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach
us?" Then they threw him out. When Jesus heard that they had
thrown him out, he found him and said, "Do you believe in the
Son of Man?" He answered and said, "Who is he, sir, that
I may believe in him?" Jesus said to him, "You have seen
him and the one speaking with you is he." He said, "I do
believe, Lord," and he worshiped him. [JN 9:24-38]
Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for
the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a
grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a
grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever
loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world
will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow
me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will
honor whoever serves me. I am troubled now. Yet what should
I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But it was for this
purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name."
Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it and will
glorify it again." The crowd there heard it and said it was
thunder; but others said, "An angel has spoken to him."
Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come for my sake
but for yours. Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the
ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I am lifted up
from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself." He said this
indicating the kind of death he would die. So the crowd answered
him, "We have heard from the law that the Messiah remains
forever. Then how can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted
up? Who is this Son of Man?" Jesus said to them, "The
light will be among you only a little while. Walk while you have
the light, so that darkness may not overcome you. Whoever walks in
the dark does not know where he is going. While you have the
light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of
the light." After he had said this, Jesus left and hid from
them. Although he had performed so many signs in their presence
they did not believe in him, in order that the word which Isaiah
the prophet spoke might be fulfilled: "Lord, who has believed
our preaching, to whom has the might of the Lord been
revealed?" For this reason they could not believe, because
again Isaiah said: "He blinded their eyes and hardened their
heart, so that they might not see with their eyes and understand
with their heart and be converted, and I would heal them."
Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke about him.
Nevertheless, many, even among the authorities, believed in him,
but because of the Pharisees they did not acknowledge it openly in
order not to be expelled from the synagogue. For they preferred
human praise to the glory of God. Jesus cried out and said,
"Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in
the one who sent me, and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me.
I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in
me might not remain in darkness. And if anyone hears my words and
does not observe them, I do not condemn him, for I did not come to
condemn the world but to save the world. Whoever rejects me and
does not accept my words has something to judge him: the word that
I spoke, it will condemn him on the last day, because I did not
speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to
say and speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. So
what I say, I say as the Father told me." [JN
12:23-50]
"I am not speaking of all of you. I know those
whom I have chosen. But so that the scripture might be fulfilled,
'The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me.'"
[JN
13:18]
Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the
truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you
do know him and have seen him." Philip said to him,
"Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for
us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so
long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen
me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do
you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father
who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the
Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the
works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me
will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name,
I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you
ask anything of me in my name, I will do it." [JN
14:6-14]
"And now I have told you this before it happens,
so that when it happens you may believe. I will no longer speak
much with you, for the ruler of the world is coming. He has no
power over me, but the world must know that I love the Father and
that I do just as the Father has commanded me. Get up, let us go." [Taken
from JN 14:29-31]
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the
vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear
fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more
fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to
you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot
bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither
can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the
branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit,
because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain
in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will
gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned." [Taken
from JN 15:1-6]
"If the world hates you, realize that it
hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love
its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have
chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. Remember the
word I spoke to you, 'No slave is greater than his master.' If
they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my
word, they will also keep yours. And they will do all these things
to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who
sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no
sin; but as it is they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates
me also hates my Father. If I had not done works among them that
no one else ever did, they would not have sin; but as it is, they
have seen and hated both me and my Father. But in order that the
word written in their law might be fulfilled, 'They hated me
without cause.' When the Advocate comes whom I will send you
from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the
Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you
have been with me from the beginning." [JN 15:18-27]
"I have much more to tell you, but you
cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he
will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he
will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that
are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is
mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is
mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is
mine and declare it to you. A little while and you will no
longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see
me." So some of his disciples said to one another, "What
does this mean that he is saying to us, 'A little while and you
will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me,'
and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" So they said,
"What is this 'little while' (of which he speaks)? We do not
know what he means." Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him,
so he said to them, "Are you discussing with one another what
I said, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a
little while and you will see me'? Amen, amen, I say to you, you
will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve,
but your grief will become joy. When a woman is in labor, she is
in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given
birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her
joy that a child has been born into the world. So you also are now
in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will
rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. On that day
you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you,
whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. Until now
you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive,
so that your joy may be complete. I have told you this in
figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak
to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. On
that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I
will ask the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you,
because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came
from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now
I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." His
disciples said, "Now you are talking plainly, and not in any
figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything and that
you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we
believe that you came from God." [JN 16:12-30]
"When I was with them I protected them in
your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them
was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the
scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you. I speak
this in the world so that they may share my joy completely. I gave
them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not
belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. I do not
ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them
from the evil one. They do not belong to the world any more than I
belong to the world. Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is
truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the
world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be
consecrated in truth." [Taken from JN 17:12-19]
The high priest questioned Jesus about his
disciples and about his doctrine. Jesus answered him, "I have
spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in a synagogue
or in the temple area where all the Jews gather, and in secret I
have said nothing. Why ask me? Ask those who heard me what I said
to them. They know what I said." When he had said this, one
of the temple guards standing there struck Jesus and said,
"Is this the way you answer the high priest?" Jesus
answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the
wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?"
Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. [JN 18:19-24]
The Jews answered, "We have a law, and
according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the
Son of God." Now when Pilate heard this statement, he became
even more afraid, and went back into the praetorium and said to
Jesus, "Where are you from?" Jesus did not answer him.
So Pilate said to him, "Do you not speak to me? Do you not
know that I have power to release you and I have power to crucify
you?" Jesus answered (him), "You would have no power
over me if it had not been given to you from above. For this
reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater
sin." Consequently, Pilate tried to release him; but the Jews
cried out, "If you release him, you are not a Friend of
Caesar. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar." [Taken
from JN 19:7-12]
Now since it was preparation day, in order that
the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the
sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate
that their legs be broken and they be taken down. So the soldiers
came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who
was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that
he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier
thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water
flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is
true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may
(come to) believe. For this happened so that the scripture passage
might be fulfilled: "Not a bone of it will be broken."
And again another passage says: "They will look upon him whom
they have pierced." [JN 19:31-37]
In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all
that Jesus did and taught until the day he was taken up, after
giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom
he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them by many proofs
after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and
speaking about the kingdom of God. While meeting with them, he
enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for
"the promise of the Father about which you have heard me
speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be
baptized with the Holy Spirit." [ACTS 1:1-5]
[Peter said,] "My brothers, the scripture had to be
fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand through the mouth
of David, concerning Judas, who was the guide for those who
arrested Jesus." [Taken from ACTS 1:16]
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they
were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the
sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire
house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as
of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And
they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now
there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in
Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they
were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own
language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked,
"Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then
how does each of us hear them in his own native language? We are
Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea
and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and
the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from
Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we
hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of
God." [ACTS 2:1-11]
My brothers, one can confidently say to you
about the patriarch David that he died and was buried, and his
tomb is in our midst to this day. But since he was a prophet and
knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of
his descendants upon his throne, he foresaw and spoke of the
resurrection of the Messiah, that neither was he abandoned to the
netherworld nor did his flesh see corruption. [Taken from ACTS 2:29-31]
"Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your
sins may be wiped away, and that the Lord may grant you times of
refreshment and send you the Messiah already appointed for you,
Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the times of universal
restoration of which God spoke through the mouth of his holy
prophets from of old. For Moses said: 'A prophet like me will the
Lord, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsmen; to
him you shall listen in all that he may say to you. Everyone who
does not listen to that prophet will be cut off from the people.'
Moreover, all the prophets who spoke, from Samuel and those
afterwards, also announced these days. You are the children of the
prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors
when he said to Abraham, 'In your offspring all the families of
the earth shall be blessed.' For you first, God raised up his
servant and sent him to bless you by turning each of you from your
evil ways." [Taken from ACTS 3:19-26]
Observing the boldness of Peter and John and
perceiving them to be uneducated, ordinary men, they were amazed,
and they recognized them as the companions of Jesus. Then when
they saw the man who had been cured standing there with them, they
could say nothing in reply. So they ordered them to leave the
Sanhedrin, and conferred with one another, saying, "What are
we to do with these men? Everyone living in Jerusalem knows that a
remarkable sign was done through them, and we cannot deny it. But
so that it may not be spread any further among the people, let us
give them a stern warning never again to speak to anyone in this
name." So they called them back and ordered them not to speak
or teach at all in the name of Jesus. Peter and John, however,
said to them in reply, "Whether it is right in the sight of
God for us to obey you rather than God, you be the judges. It is
impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and
heard." After threatening them further, they released them,
finding no way to punish them, on account of the people who were
all praising God for what had happened. For the man on whom this
sign of healing had been done was over forty years old. [ACTS 4:13-22]
After their release they went back to their own
people and reported what the chief priests and elders had told
them. And when they heard it, they raised their voices to God with
one accord and said, "Sovereign Lord, maker of heaven and
earth and the sea and all that is in them, you said by the Holy Spirit
through the mouth of our father David, your servant: 'Why
did the Gentiles rage and the peoples entertain folly? The kings
of the earth took their stand and the princes gathered together
against the Lord and against his anointed.' Indeed they gathered
in this city against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,
Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the
peoples of Israel, to do what your hand and (your) will had long
ago planned to take place. And now, Lord, take note of their
threats, and enable your servants to speak your word with all
boldness, as you stretch forth (your) hand to heal, and signs and
wonders are done through the name of your holy servant
Jesus." As they prayed, the place where they were gathered
shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued
to speak the word of God with boldness. [Taken from ACTS 4:23-31]
After recalling the apostles, they had them
flogged, ordered them to stop speaking in the name of Jesus, and
dismissed them. So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin,
rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for
the sake of the name. And all day long, both at the temple and in
their homes, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the
Messiah, Jesus. [ACTS 5:40-42]
Now Stephen, filled with grace and power, was
working great wonders and signs among the people. Certain members
of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and
Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and
debated with Stephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and
the spirit with which he spoke. Then they instigated some men to
say, "We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against
Moses and God." They stirred up the people, the elders, and
the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the
Sanhedrin. They presented false witnesses who testified,
"This man never stops saying things against (this) holy place
and the law. For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the
Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses
handed down to us." All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked
intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an
angel. [ACTS 6:8-15]
Then the angel of the Lord spoke to Philip,
"Get up and head south on the road that goes down from
Jerusalem to Gaza, the desert route." So he got up and set
out. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the
Candace, that is, the queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her
entire treasury, who had come to Jerusalem to worship, and was
returning home. Seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet
Isaiah. The Spirit said to Philip, "Go and join up with that
chariot." Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the
prophet and said, "Do you understand what you are
reading?" He replied, "How can I, unless someone
instructs me?" So he invited Philip to get in and sit with
him. [Taken from ACTS 8:26-31]
After a long time had passed, the Jews conspired
to kill him, but their plot became known to Saul. Now they were
keeping watch on the gates day and night so as to kill him, but
his disciples took him one night and let him down through an
opening in the wall, lowering him in a basket. When he arrived in
Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid
of him, not believing that he was a disciple. Then Barnabas took
charge of him and brought him to the apostles, and he reported to
them how on the way he had seen the Lord and that he had spoken to
him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of
Jesus. He moved about freely with them in Jerusalem, and spoke out
boldly in the name of the Lord. He also spoke and debated with the
Hellenists, but they tried to kill him. And when the brothers
learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him on
his way to Tarsus. [ACTS 9:23-30]
When the angel who spoke to him had left, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier
from his staff, explained everything to them, and sent them to Joppa.
[Taken from ACTS 10:7-8]
Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, "In
truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation
whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. You
know the word (that) he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed
peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened
all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John
preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those
oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of
all that he did both in the country of the Jews and (in)
Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This
man God raised (on) the third day and granted that he be visible,
not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in
advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is
the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To
him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in
him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name." While
Peter was still speaking these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon
all who were listening to the word. The circumcised believers who
had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit
should have been poured out on the Gentiles also, for they
could hear them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. Then Peter
responded, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these
people, who have received the Holy Spirit even as we have?"
He ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then
they invited him to stay for a few days. [ACTS
10:34-49]
"Just then three men appeared at the house where
we were, who had been sent to me from Caesarea. The Spirit told me
to accompany them without discriminating. These six brothers also
went with me, and we entered the man's house. He related to us how
he had seen (the) angel standing in his house, saying, 'Send
someone to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter, who will
speak words to you by which you and all your household will be
saved.' As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them as it
had upon us at the beginning, and I remembered the word of the
Lord, how he had said, 'John baptized with water but you will be
baptized with the Holy Spirit.' If then God gave them the same
gift he gave to us when we came to believe in the Lord Jesus
Christ, who was I to be able to hinder God?" When they heard
this, they stopped objecting and glorified God, saying, "God
has then granted life-giving repentance to the Gentiles too."
Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that arose
because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch,
preaching the word to no one but Jews. There were some Cypriots
and Cyrenians among them, however, who came to Antioch and began
to speak to the Greeks as well, proclaiming the Lord Jesus. The
hand of the Lord was with them and a great number who believed
turned to the Lord. [ACTS 11:11-21]
As they were leaving, they invited them to speak
on these subjects the following sabbath. After the congregation
had dispersed, many Jews and worshipers who were converts to
Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged
them to remain faithful to the grace of God. On the following
sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the
Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy
and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. Both Paul and
Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that
the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it
and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to
the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I have made you a
light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation
to the ends of the earth.'" The Gentiles were delighted when
they heard this and glorified the word of the Lord. All who were
destined for eternal life came to believe, and the word of the
Lord continued to spread through the whole region. The Jews,
however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and
the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul
and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. So they
shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to
Iconium. The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. [Taken
from ACTS 13:42-52]
In Iconium they entered the Jewish synagogue
together and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews
and Greeks came to believe, although the disbelieving Jews stirred
up and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against the brothers. So
they stayed for a considerable period, speaking out boldly for the
Lord, who confirmed the word about his grace by granting signs and
wonders to occur through their hands. The people of the city were
divided: some were with the Jews; others, with the apostles. When
there was an attempt by both the Gentiles and the Jews, together
with their leaders, to attack and stone them, they realized it and
fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the
surrounding countryside, where they continued to proclaim the good
news. [ACTS 14:1-7]
At Lystra there was a crippled man, lame from birth, who had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking, who looked intently at him, saw that he had the faith to be healed,
and called out in a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet." He jumped up and began to walk about.
[ACTS 14:8-10]
On the sabbath we went outside the city gate
along the river where we thought there would be a place of prayer.
We sat and spoke with the women who had gathered there. One of
them, a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from the city
of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, listened, and the Lord opened her
heart to pay attention to what Paul was saying. [ACTS 16:13-14]
Then he brought them out and said, "Sirs,
what must I do to be saved?" And they said, "Believe in
the Lord Jesus and you and your household will be saved." So
they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his
house. He took them in at that hour of the night and bathed their
wounds; then he and all his family were baptized at once. [ACTS
16:30-33]
One night in a vision the Lord said to Paul, "Do not be afraid. Go on speaking, and do not be silent, for I am with you. No one will attack and harm you, for I have many people in this city."
[ACTS 18:9-10]
A Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, an
eloquent speaker, arrived in Ephesus. He was an authority on the
scriptures. He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord and,
with ardent spirit, spoke and taught accurately about Jesus,
although he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak
boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him,
they took him aside and explained to him the Way (of God) more
accurately. And when he wanted to cross to Achaia, the brothers
encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him.
After his arrival he gave great assistance to those who had come
to believe through grace. He vigorously refuted the Jews in
public, establishing from the scriptures that the Messiah is
Jesus. [ACTS 18:24-28]
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled
through the interior of the country and came (down) to Ephesus
where he found some disciples. He said to them, "Did you
receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They
answered him, "We have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." He said, "How were you baptized?" They
replied, "With the baptism of John." Paul then said,
"John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the
people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is,
in Jesus." When they heard this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul laid (his) hands on them,
the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and
prophesied. Altogether there were about twelve men. [ACTS 19:1-7]
On the first day of the week when we gathered to
break bread, Paul spoke to them because he was going to leave on
the next day, and he kept on speaking until midnight. There were
many lamps in the upstairs room where we were gathered, and a
young man named Eutychus who was sitting on the window sill was
sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. Once overcome
by sleep, he fell down from the third story and when he was picked
up, he was dead. Paul went down, threw himself upon him, and said
as he embraced him, "Don't be alarmed; there is life in
him." Then he returned upstairs, broke the bread, and ate;
after a long conversation that lasted until daybreak, he departed.
And they took the boy away alive and were immeasurably comforted. [ACTS
20:7-12]
Just as Paul was about to be taken into the
compound, he said to the cohort commander, "May I say
something to you?" He replied, "Do you speak Greek? So
then you are not the Egyptian who started a revolt some time ago
and led the four thousand assassins into the desert?" Paul
answered, "I am a Jew, of Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no
mean city; I request you to permit me to speak to the
people." When he had given his permission, Paul stood on the
steps and motioned with his hand to the people; and when all was
quiet he addressed them in Hebrew. [ACTS 21:37-40]
A great uproar occurred, and some scribes
belonging to the Pharisee party stood up and sharply argued,
"We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit or an
angel has spoken to him?" [Taken from ACTS 23:9]
Several days later Felix came with his wife
Drusilla, who was Jewish. He had Paul summoned and listened to him
speak about faith in Christ Jesus. But as he spoke about
righteousness and self-restraint and the coming judgment, Felix
became frightened and said, "You may go for now; when I find
an opportunity I shall summon you again." At the same time he
hoped that a bribe would be offered him by Paul, and so he sent
for him very often and conversed with him. Two years passed and
Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. Wishing to ingratiate
himself with the Jews, Felix left Paul in prison. [ACTS 24:24-27]
While Paul was so speaking in his defense,
Festus said in a loud voice, "You are mad, Paul; much
learning is driving you mad." But Paul replied, "I am
not mad, most excellent Festus; I am speaking words of truth and
reason. The king knows about these matters and to him I speak
boldly, for I cannot believe that (any) of this has escaped his
notice; this was not done in a corner. King Agrippa, do you
believe the prophets? I know you believe." Then Agrippa said
to Paul, "You will soon persuade me to play the
Christian." Paul replied, "I would pray to God that
sooner or later not only you but all who listen to me today might
become as I am except for these chains." [ACTS 26:24-29]
Without reaching any agreement among themselves
they began to leave; then Paul made one final statement.
"Well did the Holy Spirit speak to your ancestors through the
prophet Isaiah, saying: 'Go to this people and say: You shall
indeed hear but not understand. You shall indeed look but never
see. Gross is the heart of this people; they will not hear with
their ears; they have closed their eyes, so they may not see with
their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their
heart and be converted, and I heal them.'" [ACTS 28:25-27]
I am speaking in human terms because of the
weakness of your nature. For just as you presented the parts of
your bodies as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness for lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to righteousness for
sanctification. [ROM 6:19]
I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my
conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I
have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could
wish that I myself were accursed and separated from Christ for the
sake of my brothers, my kin according to the flesh. They are
Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the
giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the
patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Messiah.
God who is over all be blessed forever. Amen. [ROM 9:1-5]
Then Isaiah speaks boldly and says: "I was
found (by) those who were not seeking me; I revealed myself to
those who were not asking for me." [ROM 10:20]
Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then
as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in
order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them. For if
their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will
their acceptance be but life from the dead? [Taken from ROM 11:13-15]
For I will not dare to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to lead the Gentiles to obedience by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit (of God), so that from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum
I have finished preaching the gospel of Christ.
[Taken from ROM 15:18-19]
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who create dissensions and obstacles, in opposition to the teaching that you learned; avoid them. For such people do not serve our Lord Christ but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the innocent.
[ROM 16:17-18]
Yet we do speak a wisdom to those who are
mature, but not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this
age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God's wisdom,
mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for
our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for if
they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of
glory. But as it is written: "What eye has not seen, and
ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human
heart, what God has prepared for those who love him,"
this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit
scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. Among human
beings, who knows what pertains to a person except the spirit of
the person that is within? Similarly, no one knows what pertains
to God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit
of the world but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may
understand the things freely given us by God. And we speak about
them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught
by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms. [1COR
2:6-13]
Therefore, I tell you that nobody speaking by
the spirit of God says, "Jesus be accursed." And no one
can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
[1COR 12:3]
Now you are Christ's body, and individually
parts of it. Some people God has designated in the church to be,
first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty
deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and
varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all
teachers? Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing?
Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Strive eagerly for the
greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more
excellent way. [1COR 12:27-31]
If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do
not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. [1COR
13:1]
Pursue love, but strive eagerly for the
spiritual gifts, above all that you may prophesy. For one who
speaks in a tongue does not speak to human beings but to God, for
no one listens; he utters mysteries in spirit. On the other hand,
one who prophesies does speak to human beings, for their building
up, encouragement, and solace. Whoever speaks in a tongue builds
himself up, but whoever prophesies builds up the church. Now I
should like all of you to speak in tongues, but even more to
prophesy. One who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in
tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be built up.
Now, brothers, if I should come to you speaking in tongues, what
good will I do you if I do not speak to you by way of revelation,
or knowledge, or prophecy, or instruction? Likewise, if inanimate
things that produce sound, such as flute or harp, do not give out
the tones distinctly, how will what is being played on flute or
harp be recognized? And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound,
who will get ready for battle? Similarly, if you, because of
speaking in tongues, do not utter intelligible speech, how will
anyone know what is being said? For you will be talking to the
air. It happens that there are many different languages in the
world, and none is meaningless; but if I do not know the meaning
of a language, I shall be a foreigner to one who speaks it, and
one who speaks it a foreigner to me. So with yourselves: since you
strive eagerly for spirits, seek to have an abundance of them for
building up the church. Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue
should pray to be able to interpret. (For) if I pray in a tongue,
my spirit is at prayer but my mind is unproductive. So what is to
be done? I will pray with the spirit, but I will also pray with
the mind. I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will also sing
praise with the mind. Otherwise, if you pronounce a blessing
(with) the spirit, how shall one who holds the place of the
uninstructed say the "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since
he does not know what you are saying? For you may be giving thanks
very well, but the other is not built up. I give thanks to God
that I speak in tongues more than any of you, but in the church I
would rather speak five words with my mind, so as to instruct
others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. [1COR 14:1-19]
Brothers, stop being childish in your thinking.
In respect to evil be like infants, but in your thinking be
mature. It is written in the law: "By people speaking
strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners I will
speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to
me, says the Lord." Thus, tongues are a sign not for
those who believe but for unbelievers, whereas prophecy is not for
unbelievers but for those who believe. So if the whole church
meets in one place and everyone speaks in tongues, and then
uninstructed people or unbelievers should come in, will they not
say that you are out of your minds? But if everyone is
prophesying, and an unbeliever or uninstructed person should come
in, he will be convinced by everyone and judged by everyone, and
the secrets of his heart will be disclosed, and so he will fall
down and worship God, declaring, "God is really in your
midst." So what is to be done, brothers? When you assemble,
one has a psalm, another an instruction, a revelation, a tongue,
or an interpretation. Everything should be done for building up.
If anyone speaks in a tongue, let it be two or at most three, and
each in turn, and one should interpret. But if there is no
interpreter, the person should keep silent in the church and speak
to himself and to God. Two or three prophets should speak, and the
others discern. But if a revelation is given to another person
sitting there, the first one should be silent. For you can all
prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged.
Indeed, the spirits of prophets are under the prophets' control,
since he is not the God of disorder but of peace. As in all the
churches of the holy ones, women should keep silent in the
churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but should be
subordinate, as even the law says. But if they want to learn
anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is
improper for a woman to speak in the church. Did the word of God
go forth from you? Or has it come to you alone? If anyone thinks
that he is a prophet or a spiritual person, he should recognize
that what I am writing to you is a commandment of the Lord. If
anyone does not acknowledge this, he is not acknowledged. So, (my)
brothers, strive eagerly to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking
in tongues, but everything must be done properly and in order. [1COR
14:20-40]
For we are not like the many who trade on the
word of God; but as out of sincerity, indeed as from God and in
the presence of God, we speak in Christ. [2COR 2:17]
Since, then, we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, "I believed, therefore I spoke," we too believe and therefore speak,
knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and place us with you in his presence.
[2COR 4:13-14]
We cause no one to stumble in anything, in order
that no fault may be found with our ministry; on the contrary, in
everything we commend ourselves as ministers of God, through much
endurance, in afflictions, hardships, constraints, beatings,
imprisonments, riots, labors, vigils, fasts; by purity, knowledge,
patience, kindness, in a holy spirit, in unfeigned love, in
truthful speech, in the power of God; with weapons of
righteousness at the right and at the left; through glory and
dishonor, insult and praise. We are treated as deceivers and yet
are truthful; as unrecognized and yet acknowledged; as dying and
behold we live; as chastised and yet not put to death; as
sorrowful yet always rejoicing; as poor yet enriching many; as
having nothing and yet possessing all things.
[2COR 6:3-10]
May I not seem as one frightening you through
letters. For someone will say, "His letters are severe and
forceful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech
contemptible." Such a person must understand that what we are
in word through letters when absent, that we also are in action
when present. [Taken from 2COR 10:9-11]
Even if I am untrained in speaking, I am not so
in knowledge; in every way we have made this plain to you in all
things. [2COR 11:6]
Have you been thinking all along that we are
defending ourselves before you? In the sight of God we are
speaking in Christ, and all for building you up, beloved. [2COR
12:19]
I warned those who sinned earlier and all the
others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on
my second visit, that if I come again I will not be lenient, since
you are looking for proof of Christ speaking in me. He is not weak
toward you but powerful in you. For indeed he was crucified out of
weakness, but he lives by the power of God. So also we are weak in
him, but toward you we shall live with him by the power of God.
Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in faith. Test
yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you? -
unless, of course, you fail the test. I hope you will
discover that we have not failed. But we pray to God that you may
not do evil, not that we may appear to have passed the test but
that you may do what is right, even though we may seem to have
failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for
the truth. For we rejoice when we are weak but you are strong.
What we pray for is your improvement. I am writing this while I am
away, so that when I come I may not have to be severe in virtue of
the authority that the Lord has given me to build up and not to
tear down. [2COR 13:2-10]
To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this
grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches
of Christ, and to bring to light (for all) what is the plan of the
mystery hidden from ages past in God who created all things, so
that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through
the church to the principalities and authorities in the heavens.
This was according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in
Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness of speech and
confidence of access through faith in him. [EPH
3:18-12]
Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the
truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members one of
another. [EPH 4:25]
Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to
the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is
head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. As the
church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to
their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as
Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to
sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,
that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without
spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and
without blemish. So (also) husbands should love their wives as
their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one
hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as
Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.
"For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his)
mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one
flesh." This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to
Christ and the church. In any case, each one of you should love
his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband. [EPH
5:22-33]
With all prayer and supplication, pray at every
opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all
perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones and also for
me, that speech may be given me to open my mouth, to make known
with boldness the mystery of the gospel for which I am an
ambassador in chains, so that I may have the courage to speak as I
must. [EPH 6:18-20]
Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with
thanksgiving; at the same time, pray for us, too, that God may
open a door to us for the word, to speak of the mystery of Christ,
for which I am in prison, that I may make it clear, as I must
speak. Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most
of the opportunity. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned
with salt, so that you know how you should respond to each one. [COL
4:2-6]
For you yourselves know, brothers, that our
reception among you was not without effect. Rather, after we had
suffered and been insolently treated, as you know, in Philippi, we
drew courage through our God to speak to you the gospel of God
with much struggle. Our exhortation was not from delusion or
impure motives, nor did it work through deception. But as we were
judged worthy by God to be entrusted with the gospel, that is how
we speak, not as trying to please human beings, but rather God,
who judges our hearts. Nor, indeed, did we ever appear with
flattering speech, as you know, or with a pretext for greed - God
is witness - nor did we seek praise from human beings, either from
you or from others, although we were able to impose our weight as
apostles of Christ. Rather, we were gentle among you, as a nursing
mother cares for her children. With such affection for you, we
were determined to share with you not only the gospel of God, but
our very selves as well, so dearly beloved had you become to us.
You recall, brothers, our toil and drudgery. Working night and day
in order not to burden any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel
of God. You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and justly
and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers. As you know, we
treated each one of you as a father treats his children, exhorting
and encouraging you and insisting that you conduct yourselves as
worthy of the God who calls you into his kingdom and
glory. And for this reason we too give thanks to God
unceasingly, that, in receiving the word of God from hearing us,
you received not a human word but, as it truly is, the word of
God, which is now at work in you who believe. For you, brothers,
have become imitators of the churches of God that are in Judea in
Christ Jesus. For you suffer the same things from your compatriots
as they did from the Jews, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the
prophets and persecuted us; they do not please God, and are
opposed to everyone, trying to prevent us from speaking to the
Gentiles that they may be saved, thus constantly filling up the
measure of their sins. But the wrath of God has finally begun to
come upon them. [1THES 2:1-16]
I entrust this charge to you, Timothy, my child,
in accordance with the prophetic words once spoken about you.
Through them may you fight a good fight by having faith and a good
conscience. Some, by rejecting conscience, have made a shipwreck
of their faith, among them Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have
handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. [1TM 1:18-20]
Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set
an example for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith,
and purity. [1TM 4:12]
As for yourself, you must say what is consistent
with sound doctrine, namely, that older men should be temperate,
dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, love, and endurance.
Similarly, older women should be reverent in their behavior, not
slanderers, not addicted to drink, teaching what is good, so that
they may train younger women to love their husbands and children,
to be self-controlled, chaste, good homemakers, under the control
of their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited.
Urge the younger men, similarly, to control themselves, showing
yourself as a model of good deeds in every respect, with integrity
in your teaching, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be
criticized, so that the opponent will be put to shame without
anything bad to say about us. [TI 2:1-8]
In times past, God spoke in partial and various
ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he
spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and
through whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his
glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things
by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from
sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more
excellent than theirs. [HEB 1:1-4]
For it was not to angels that he subjected the
world to come, of which we are speaking. Instead, someone has
testified somewhere: "What is man that you are mindful of
him, or the son of man that you care for him? You made him for a
little while lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and
honor, subjecting all things under his feet." In
"subjecting" all things (to him), he left nothing not
"subject to him." Yet at present we do not see "all
things subject to him," but we do see Jesus "crowned
with glory and honor" because he suffered death, he who
"for a little while" was made "lower than the
angels," that by the grace of God he might taste death for
everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom
all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make
the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. [Taken
from HEB 2:5-10]
Every house is founded by someone, but the
founder of all is God. Moses was "faithful in all his
house" as a "servant" to testify to what would be
spoken, but Christ was faithful as a son placed over his house. We
are his house, if (only) we hold fast to our confidence and pride
in our hope. [HEB 3:4-6]
For he has spoken somewhere about the seventh
day in this manner, "And God rested on the seventh day from
all his works"; and again, in the previously mentioned place,
"They shall not enter into my rest." Therefore, since it
remains that some will enter into it, and those who formerly
received the good news did not enter because of disobedience, he
once more set a day, "today," when long afterwards he
spoke through David, as already quoted: "Oh, that today you
would hear his voice: 'Harden not your hearts.'" Now if
Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterwards of
another day. Therefore, a sabbath rest still remains for the
people of God. And whoever enters into God's rest, rests from his
own works as God did from his. Therefore, let us strive to enter
into that rest, so that no one may fall after the same example of
disobedience. [HEB 4:4-11]
For it is impossible in the case of those who
have once been enlightened and tasted the heavenly gift and shared
in the Holy Spirit and tasted the good word of God and the powers
of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to bring them to
repentance again, since they are recrucifying the Son of God for
themselves and holding him up to contempt. Ground that has
absorbed the rain falling upon it repeatedly and brings forth
crops useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a
blessing from God. But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is
rejected; it will soon be cursed and finally burned. But we are
sure in your regard, beloved, of better things related to
salvation, even though we speak in this way. For God is not unjust
so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for
his name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones. [HEB
6:4-10]
When he speaks of a "new" covenant, he
declares the first one obsolete. And what has become obsolete and
has grown old is close to disappearing. [HEB 8:13]
By faith Abel offered to God a sacrifice greater
than Cain's. Through this he was attested to be righteous, God
bearing witness to his gifts, and through this, though dead, he
still speaks. [HEB 11:4]
All these died in faith. They did not receive
what had been promised but saw it and greeted it from afar and
acknowledged themselves to be strangers and aliens on earth, for
those who speak thus show that they are seeking a homeland. If
they had been thinking of the land from which they had come, they
would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better
homeland, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be
called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. [HEB 11:13-16]
By faith Joseph, near the end of his life, spoke
of the Exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his
bones. [HEB 11:22]
No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city
of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in
festal gathering, and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in
heaven, and God the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made
perfect, and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and the
sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel. See
that you do not reject the one who speaks. For if they did not
escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how
much more in our case if we turn away from the one who warns from
heaven. His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has
promised, "I will once more shake not only earth but
heaven." That phrase, "once more," points to (the)
removal of shaken, created things, so that what is unshaken may
remain. Therefore, we who are receiving the unshakable kingdom
should have gratitude, with which we should offer worship pleasing
to God in reverence and awe. For our God is a consuming fire. [Taken
from HEB 12:22-29]
Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God
to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate
their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and
forever. Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teaching.
It is good to have our hearts strengthened by grace and not by
foods, which do not benefit those who live by them. [HEB 13:7-9]
Know this, my dear brothers: everyone should be quick to hear,
slow to speak, slow to wrath, for the wrath of a man does not accomplish the righteousness of God.
[JMS 1:19-20]
So speak and so act as people who will be judged by the law of
freedom. For the judgment is merciless to one who has not shown mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.
[JMS 2:12-13]
Not many of you should become teachers, my
brothers, for you realize that we will be judged more strictly,
for we all fall short in many respects. If anyone does not fall
short in speech, he is a perfect man, able to bridle his whole
body also. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them
obey us, we also guide their whole bodies. It is the same with
ships: even though they are so large and driven by fierce winds,
they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot's
inclination wishes. In the same way the tongue is a small member
and yet has great pretensions. Consider how small a fire can set a
huge forest ablaze. The tongue is also a fire. It exists among our
members as a world of malice, defiling the whole body and setting
the entire course of our lives on fire, itself set on fire by
Gehenna. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea
creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species,
but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil,
full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and
with it we curse human beings who are made in the likeness of God.
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. This need not be
so, my brothers. Does a spring gush forth from the same opening
both pure and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, produce
olives, or a grapevine figs? Neither can salt water yield fresh. [JMS
3:1-12]
Adulterers! Do you not know that to be a lover
of the world means enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wants to be
a lover of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you
suppose that the scripture speaks without meaning when it says,
"The spirit that he has made to dwell in us tends toward
jealousy"? But he bestows a greater grace; therefore, it
says: "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the
humble." So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and
he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to
you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you
of two minds. Begin to lament, to mourn, to weep. Let your
laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection.
Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you. Do not
speak evil of one another, brothers. Whoever speaks evil of a
brother or judges his brother speaks evil of the law and judges
the law. If you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a
judge. There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save or to
destroy. Who then are you to judge your neighbor? [JMS 4:4-12]
You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm,
because the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not complain,
brothers, about one another, that you may not be judged. Behold,
the Judge is standing before the gates. Take as an example of
hardship and patience, brothers, the prophets who spoke in the
name of the Lord. Indeed we call blessed those who have
persevered. You have heard of the perseverance of Job, and you
have seen the purpose of the Lord, because "the Lord is
compassionate and merciful." [JMS 5:8-11]
Beloved, I urge you as aliens and sojourners to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against the soul.
Maintain good conduct among the Gentiles, so that if they speak of you as evildoers, they may observe your good works and glorify God on the day of visitation.
[1PT 2:11-12]
Finally, all of you, be of one mind,
sympathetic, loving toward one another, compassionate, humble. Do
not return evil for evil, or insult for insult; but, on the
contrary, a blessing, because to this you were called, that you
might inherit a blessing. For: "Whoever would love life and
see good days must keep the tongue from evil and the lips from
speaking deceit, must turn from evil and do good, seek peace and
follow after it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and
his ears turned to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is
against evildoers." [1PT 3:8-12]
Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the
Holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.
[2PT 1:20-21]
Their eyes are full of adultery and insatiable
for sin. They seduce unstable people, and their hearts are trained
in greed. Accursed children! Abandoning the straight road, they
have gone astray, following the road of Balaam, the son of Bosor,
who loved payment for wrongdoing, but he received a rebuke for his
own crime: a mute beast spoke with a human voice and restrained
the prophet's madness. These people are waterless springs and
mists driven by a gale; for them the gloom of darkness has been
reserved. For, talking empty bombast, they seduce with licentious
desires of the flesh those who have barely escaped from people who
live in error. They promise them freedom, though they themselves
are slaves of corruption, for a person is a slave of whatever
overcomes him. For if they, having escaped the defilements of the
world through the knowledge of (our) Lord and savior Jesus Christ,
again become entangled and overcome by them, their last condition
is worse than their first. For it would have been better for them
not to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it
to turn back from the holy commandment handed down to them. What
is expressed in the true proverb has happened to them, "The
dog returns to its own vomit," and "A bathed sow returns
to wallowing in the mire." [Taken from 2PT 2:14-22]
This is now, beloved, the second letter I am
writing to you; through them by way of reminder I am trying to
stir up your sincere disposition, to recall the words previously
spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and
savior through your apostles. Know this first of all, that in the
last days scoffers will come (to) scoff, living according to their
own desires and saying, "Where is the promise of his coming?
From the time when our ancestors fell asleep, everything has
remained as it was from the beginning of creation." They
deliberately ignore the fact that the heavens existed of old and
earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of
God; through these the world that then existed was destroyed,
deluged with water. The present heavens and earth have been
reserved by the same word for fire, kept for the day of judgment
and of destruction of the godless. But do not ignore this one
fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years
and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his
promise, as some regard "delay," but he is patient with
you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come
to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and
then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the
elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything
done on it will be found out. Since everything is to be dissolved
in this way, what sort of persons ought (you) to be, conducting
yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the
coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be
dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. But according
to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which
righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these
things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him,
at peace. And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, as
our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him,
also wrote to you, speaking of these things as he does in all his
letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the
ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as
they do the other scriptures. [2PT 3:1-16]
We know that we have passed from death to life
because we love our brothers. Whoever does not love remains in
death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know
that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him. The way we
came to know love was that he laid down his life for us; so we
ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If someone who has
worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion,
how can the love of God remain in him? Children, let us love not
in word or speech but in deed and truth. [1JN 3:14-18]
Although I have much to write to you, I do not
intend to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and to
speak face to face so that our joy may be complete. [2JN 1:12]
But you, beloved, remember the words spoken
beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, for they told
you, "In (the) last time there will be scoffers who will live
according to their own godless desires." These are the ones
who cause divisions; they live on the natural plane, devoid of the
Spirit. But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy
faith; pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God
and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to
eternal life. On those who waver, have mercy; save others by
snatching them out of the fire; on others have mercy with fear,
abhorring even the outer garment stained by the flesh. [JUDE 1:17-23]
I was caught up in spirit on the Lord's day and
heard behind me a voice as loud as a trumpet, which said,
"Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven
churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis,
Philadelphia, and Laodicea." Then I turned to see whose voice
it was that spoke to me, and when I turned, I saw seven gold
lampstands and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of
man, wearing an ankle-length robe, with a gold sash around his
chest. The hair of his head was as white as white wool or as snow,
and his eyes were like a fiery flame. His feet were like polished
brass refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of
rushing water. In his right hand he held seven stars. A sharp
two-edged sword came out of his mouth, and his face shone like the
sun at its brightest. When I caught sight of him, I fell down at
his feet as though dead. He touched me with his right hand and
said, "Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last, the one
who lives. Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I
hold the keys to death and the netherworld. Write down, therefore,
what you have seen, and what is happening, and what will happen
afterwards." [Taken from RV 1:10-19]
After this I had a vision of an open door to
heaven, and I heard the trumpetlike voice that had spoken to me
before, saying, "Come up here and I will show you what must
happen afterwards." [RV 4:1]
Then one of the elders spoke up and said to me,
"Who are these wearing white robes, and where did they come
from?" I said to him, "My lord, you are the one who
knows." He said to me, "These are the ones who have
survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes
and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this
reason they stand before God's throne and worship him day and
night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter
them. They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or
any heat strike them. For the Lamb who is in the center of the
throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving
water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." [RV
7:13-17]
When the seven thunders had spoken, I was about
to write it down; but I heard a voice from heaven say, "Seal
up what the seven thunders have spoken, but do not write it
down." [RV 10:4]
Then the voice that I had heard from heaven
spoke to me again and said, "Go, take the scroll that lies
open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on
the land." So I went up to the angel and told him to give me
the small scroll. He said to me, "Take and swallow it. It
will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will taste as
sweet as honey." I took the small scroll from the angel's
hand and swallowed it. In my mouth it was like sweet honey, but
when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. Then someone said to
me, "You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations,
tongues, and kings." [RV 10:8-11]
Then I saw another beast come up out of the
earth; it had two horns like a lamb's but spoke like a dragon. It
wielded all the authority of the first beast in its sight and made
the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose
mortal wound had been healed. It performed great signs, even
making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of
everyone. It deceived the inhabitants of the earth with the signs
it was allowed to perform in the sight of the first beast, telling
them to make an image for the beast who had been wounded by the
sword and revived. It was then permitted to breathe life into the
beast's image, so that the beast's image could speak and (could)
have anyone who did not worship it put to death. It forced all the
people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to be
given a stamped image on their right hands or their foreheads, so
that no one could buy or sell except one who had the stamped image
of the beast's name or the number that stood for its name. Wisdom
is needed here; one who understands can calculate the number of
the beast, for it is a number that stands for a person. His number
is six hundred and sixty-six. [RV 13:11-18]
I heard a loud voice speaking from the temple to
the seven angels, "Go and pour out the seven bowls of God's
fury upon the earth." [RV 16:1]
The one who spoke to me held a gold measuring
rod to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. [RV 21:15]
