In the beginning, when
God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless
wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, while a mighty wind
swept over the waters. Then God said, "Let there be
light," and there was light. God saw how good the light was.
God then separated the light from the darkness. God called the
light "day," and the darkness he called
"night." Thus evening came, and morning followed - the
first day. Then God said, "Let there be a dome in the middle
of the waters, to separate one body of water from the other."
And so it happened: God made the dome, and it separated the water
above the dome from the water below it. God called the dome
"the sky." Evening came, and morning followed - the
second day. Then God said, "Let the water under the sky be
gathered into a single basin, so that the dry land may
appear." And so it happened: the water under the sky was
gathered into its basin, and the dry land appeared. God called the
dry land "the earth," and the basin of the water he
called "the sea." God saw how good it was. Then God
said, "Let the earth bring forth vegetation: every kind of
plant that bears seed and every kind of fruit tree on earth that
bears fruit with its seed in it." And so it happened: the
earth brought forth every kind of plant that bears seed and every
kind of fruit tree on earth that bears fruit with its seed in it.
God saw how good it was. Evening came, and morning followed - the
third day. Then God said: "Let there be lights in the dome of
the sky, to separate day from night. Let them mark the fixed
times, the days and the years, and serve as luminaries in the dome
of the sky, to shed light upon the earth." And so it
happened: God made the two great lights, the greater one to govern
the day, and the lesser one to govern the night; and he made the
stars. God set them in the dome of the sky, to shed light upon the
earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light
from the darkness. God saw how good it was. Evening came, and
morning followed - the fourth day. [Taken from GEN 1:1-19] So
Abram said to Lot: "Let there be no strife between you and
me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are kinsmen. Is not
the whole land at your disposal? Please separate from me. If you
prefer the left, I will go to the right; if you prefer the right,
I will go to the left." Lot looked about and saw how well
watered the whole Jordan Plain was as far as Zoar, like the LORD'S
own garden, or like Egypt. (This was before the LORD had destroyed
Sodom and Gomorrah.) Lot, therefore, chose for himself the whole
Jordan Plain and set out eastward. Thus they separated from each
other; Abram stayed in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among
the cities of the Plain, pitching his tents near Sodom. [GEN 13:8-12]
He put these animals in charge of his servants, in separate
droves, and he told the servants, "Go on ahead of me, but
keep a space between one drove and the next." [GEN 32:17]
When Joseph's eye fell on his full brother Benjamin, he asked,
"Is this your youngest brother, of whom you told me?"
Then he said to him, "May God be gracious to you, my
boy!" With that, Joseph had to hurry out, for he was so
overcome with affection for his brother that he was on the verge
of tears. He went into a private room and wept there. After
washing his face, he reappeared and, now in control of himself,
gave the order, "Serve the meal." It was served
separately to him, to the brothers, and to the Egyptians who
partook of his board. (Egyptians may not eat with Hebrews; that is
abhorrent to them.) When they were seated by his directions
according to their age, from the oldest to the youngest, they
looked at one another in amazement; and as portions were brought
to them from Joseph's table, Benjamin's portion was five times as
large as anyone else's. So they drank freely and made merry with
him. [GEN 43:29-34]
When those who were to map out the land were ready for the
journey, Joshua instructed them to survey the land, prepare a
description of it, and return to him; then he would cast lots for
them there before the LORD in Shiloh. So they went through the
land, listed its cities in writing in seven sections, and returned
to Joshua in the camp at Shiloh. Joshua then divided up the land
for the Israelites into their separate shares, casting lots for
them before the LORD in Shiloh. [JOSH 18:8-10]
"See now!" she said, "your sister-in-law has
gone back to her people and her god. Go back after your
sister-in-law!" But Ruth said, "Do not ask me to abandon
or forsake you! for wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge
I will lodge, your people shall be my people, and your God my God.
Wherever you die I will die, and there be buried. May the LORD do
so and so to me, and more besides, if aught but death separates me
from you!" Naomi then ceased to urge her, for she saw she was
determined to go with her. [RUTH 1:15-18]
Saul and Jonathan, beloved and cherished, separated neither in
life nor in death, swifter than eagles, stronger than lions! [2SAM
1:23]
The Israelites who had returned from the exile partook of it
together with all those who had separated themselves from the
uncleanness of the peoples of the land to join them in seeking the
LORD, the God of Israel. [EZRA 6:21]
Then Ezra, the priest, stood up and said to them: "Your
unfaithfulness in taking foreign women as wives has added to
Israel's guilt. But now, give praise to the LORD, the God of your
fathers, and do his will: separate yourselves from the peoples of
the land and from these foreign women." [EZRA 10:10-11]
From that time on, however, only half my able men took a hand
in the work, while the other half, armed with spears, bucklers,
bows, and breastplates, stood guard behind the whole house of
Judah as they rebuilt the wall. The load carriers, too, were
armed; each did his work with one hand and held a weapon with the
other. Every builder, while he worked, had his sword girt at his
side. Also, a trumpeter stood beside me, for I had said to the
nobles, the magistrates, and the rest of the people: "Our
work is scattered and extensive, and we are widely separated from
one another along the wall; wherever you hear the trumpet sound,
join us there; our God will fight with us." Thus we went on
with the work, half of the men with spears at the ready, from
daybreak till the stars came out. [NEH 4:10-15]
On the twenty-fourth day of this month, the Israelites gathered
together fasting and in sackcloth, their heads covered with dust.
Those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all who were
of foreign extraction, then stood forward and confessed their sins
and the guilty deeds of their fathers. When they had taken their
places, they read from the book of the law of the LORD their God,
for a fourth part of the day, and during another fourth part they
made their confession and prostrated themselves before the LORD
their God. [NEH 9:1-3]
The rest of the people, priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple slaves, and all others who have separated themselves from the peoples of the lands in favor of the law of God, with their wives, their sons, their daughters, all who are of the age of discretion, join with their brethren who are their princes, and with the sanction of a curse take this oath to follow the law of God which was given through Moses, the servant of God, and to observe carefully all the commandments of the LORD, our LORD, his ordinances and his statutes.
[NEH 10:29-30]
At that time, when there was reading from the book of Moses in
the hearing of the people, it was found written there that
"no Ammonite or Moabite may ever be admitted into the
assembly of God; for they would not succor the Israelites with
food and water, but they hired Balaam to curse them, though our
God turned the curse into a blessing." When they had heard
the law, they separated from Israel every foreign element. [NEH
13:1-3]
There sprang from these a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes,
son of King Antiochus, once a hostage at Rome. He became king in
the year one hundred and thirty-seven of the kingdom of the
Greeks. In those days there appeared in Israel men who were
breakers of the law, and they seduced many people, saying:
"Let us go and make an alliance with the Gentiles all around
us; since we separated from them, many evils have come upon
us." The proposal was agreeable; some from among the people
promptly went to the king, and he authorized them to introduce the
way of living of the Gentiles. Thereupon they built a gymnasium in
Jerusalem according to the Gentile custom. They covered over the
mark of their circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant; they
allied themselves with the Gentiles and sold themselves to
wrongdoing. [1MACC 1:10-15]
An intriguer sows discord, and a talebearer separates bosom
friends. [PROV 16:28]
He who covers up a misdeed fosters friendship, but he who
gossips about it separates friends. [PROV 17:9]
Love justice, you who judge the earth; think of the LORD in
goodness, and seek him in integrity of heart; Because he is found
by those who test him not, and he manifests himself to those who
do not disbelieve him. For perverse counsels separate a man from
God, and his power, put to the proof, rebukes the foolhardy;
Because into a soul that plots evil wisdom enters not, nor dwells
she in a body under debt of sin. For the holy spirit of discipline
flees deceit and withdraws from senseless counsels; and when
injustice occurs it is rebuked. For wisdom is a kindly spirit, yet
she acquits not the blasphemer of his guilty lips; Because God is
the witness of his inmost self and the sure observer of his heart
and the listener to his tongue. For the spirit of the LORD fills
the world, is all-embracing, and knows what man says. Therefore no
one who utters wicked things can go unnoticed, nor will chastising
condemnation pass him by. [WISDOM 1:1-8]
Lo, the hand of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.
Rather, it is your crimes that separate you from your God, It is your sins that make him hide his face so that he will not hear you. [ISA
59:1-2]
As I live, says the Lord GOD, with a mighty hand and
outstretched arm, with poured-out wrath, I swear I will be king
over you! With a mighty hand and outstretched arm, with poured-out
wrath, I will bring you out from the nations and gather you from
the countries over which you are scattered; then I will lead you
to the desert of the peoples, where I will enter into judgment
with you face to face. Just as I entered into judgment with your
fathers in the desert of the land of Egypt, so will I enter into
judgment with you, says the Lord GOD. I will count you with the
staff and bring back but a small number. I will separate from you
those who have rebelled and transgressed against me; from the land
where they sojourned as aliens I will bring them out, but they
shall not return to the land of Israel. Thus you shall know that I
am the LORD. [EZEK 20:33-38]
When he had finished measuring the inner temple area, he brought me out by way of the gate which faces east and measured all the limits of the court...
Thus he measured it in the four directions, five hundred cubits long and five hundred cubits wide. It was surrounded by a wall, to separate the sacred from the profane.
[EZEK 42:15,20]
As she was being led to execution, God stirred up the holy
spirit of a young boy named Daniel, and he cried aloud: "I
will have no part in the death of this woman." All the people
turned and asked him, "What is this you are saying?" He
stood in their midst and continued, "Are you such fools, O
Israelites! To condemn a woman of Israel without examination and
without clear evidence? Return to court, for they have testified
falsely against her." Then all the people returned in haste.
To Daniel the elders said, "Come, sit with us and inform us,
since God has given you the prestige of old age." But he
replied, "Separate these two far from one another that I may
examine them." After they were separated one from the other,
he called one of them and said: "How you have grown evil with
age! Now have your past sins come to term: passing unjust
sentences, condemning the innocent, and freeing the guilty,
although the Lord says, 'The innocent and the just you shall not
put to death.' Now, then, if you were a witness, tell me under
what tree you saw them together." "Under a mastic
tree," he answered. "Your fine lie has cost you your
head," said Daniel; "for the angel of God shall receive
the sentence from him and split you in two." Putting him to
one side, he ordered the other one to be brought. "Offspring
of Canaan, not of Judah," Daniel said to him, "beauty
has seduced you, lust has subverted your conscience. This is how
you acted with the daughters of Israel, and in their fear they
yielded to you; but a daughter of Judah did not tolerate your
wickedness. Now, then, tell me under what tree you surprised them
together." "Under an oak," he said. "Your fine
lie has cost you also your head," said Daniel; "for the
angel of God waits with a sword to cut you in two so as to make an
end of you both." The whole assembly cried aloud, blessing
God who saves those that hope in him. They rose up against the two
elders, for by their own words Daniel had convicted them of
perjury. According to the law of Moses, they inflicted on them the
penalty they had plotted to impose on their neighbor: they put
them to death. Thus was innocent blood spared that day. [DAN 13:45-62]
Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
[Taken from MT 13:49-50]
When Jesus finished these words, he left Galilee and went to
the district of Judea across the Jordan. Great crowds followed
him, and he cured them there. Some Pharisees approached him, and
tested him, saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his
wife for any cause whatever?" He said in reply, "Have
you not read that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male
and female' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his
father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall
become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must
separate." They said to him, "Then why did Moses command
that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss
(her)?" He said to them, "Because of the hardness of
your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the
beginning it was not so. I say to you, whoever divorces his wife
(unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits
adultery." [MT 19:1-9]
[Jesus said,] "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and
all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and
all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate
them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the
goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his
left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who
are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you
from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me
food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you
welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me,
in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer him
and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or
thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and
welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or
in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply,
'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least
brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to those on
his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire
prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you
gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a
stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no
clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' Then
they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or
thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not
minister to your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you,
what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do
for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the
righteous to eternal life." [Taken from MT 25:31-46]
The Pharisees approached and asked, "Is it lawful for a
husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said
to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They
replied, "Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and
dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the
hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from
the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female. For
this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined
to his wife), and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no
longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together,
no human being must separate." In the house the disciples
again questioned him about this. He said to them, "Whoever
divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against
her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she
commits adultery." [MK 10:2-12]
When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and
saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his
head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate
place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had
arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. [JN 20:6-8]
After some time, Paul said to Barnabas, "Come, let us make
a return visit to see how the brothers are getting on in all the
cities where we proclaimed the word of the Lord." Barnabas
wanted to take with them also John, who was called Mark, but Paul
insisted that they should not take with them someone who had
deserted them at Pamphylia and who had not continued with them in
their work. So sharp was their disagreement that they separated.
Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus. But Paul chose Silas and
departed after being commended by the brothers to the grace of the
Lord. [ACTS 15:36-40]
We know that all things work for good for those who love God,
who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he
also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that
he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he
predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified;
and those he justified he also glorified. What then shall we say
to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not
spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not
also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a
charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who acquits us. Who
will condemn? It is Christ (Jesus) who died, rather, was raised,
who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for
us. What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish,
or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or
the sword?... No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly
through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death,
nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor
future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other
creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in
Christ Jesus our Lord. [Taken from ROM 8:28-35,37-39]
I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins
with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great
sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I
myself were accursed and separated from Christ for the sake of my
brothers, my kin according to the flesh. They are Israelites;
theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the
law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and
from them, according to the flesh, is the Messiah. God who is over
all be blessed forever. Amen. [ROM 9:1-5]
Now in regard to the matters about which you wrote: "It is
a good thing for a man not to touch a woman," but because of
cases of immorality every man should have his own wife, and every
woman her own husband. The husband should fulfill his duty toward
his wife, and likewise the wife toward her husband. A wife does
not have authority over her own body, but rather her husband, and
similarly a husband does not have authority over his own body, but
rather his wife. Do not deprive each other, except perhaps by
mutual consent for a time, to be free for prayer, but then return
to one another, so that Satan may not tempt you through your lack
of self-control. This I say by way of concession, however, not as
a command. Indeed, I wish everyone to be as I am, but each has a
particular gift from God, one of one kind and one of another. Now
to the unmarried and to widows, I say: it is a good thing for them
to remain as they are, as I do, but if they cannot exercise
self-control they should marry, for it is better to marry than to
be on fire. To the married, however, I give this instruction (not
I, but the Lord): a wife should not separate from her husband -
and if she does separate she must either remain single or become
reconciled to her husband - and a husband should not divorce his
wife. To the rest I say (not the Lord): if any brother has a wife
who is an unbeliever, and she is willing to go on living with him,
he should not divorce her; and if any woman has a husband who is
an unbeliever, and he is willing to go on living with her, she
should not divorce her husband. For the unbelieving husband is
made holy through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy
through the brother. Otherwise your children would be unclean,
whereas in fact they are holy. If the unbeliever separates,
however, let him separate. The brother or sister is not bound in
such cases; God has called you to peace. For how do you know,
wife, whether you will save your husband; or how do you know,
husband, whether you will save your wife? Only, everyone should
live as the Lord has assigned, just as God called each one. I give
this order in all the churches. [1COR 7:1-17]
Do not be yoked with those who are different, with unbelievers.
For what partnership do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or
what fellowship does light have with darkness? What accord has
Christ with Beliar? Or what has a believer in common with an
unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For
we are the temple of the living God; as God said: "I will
live with them and move among them, and I will be their God and
they shall be my people. Therefore, come forth from them and be
separate," says the Lord, "and touch nothing unclean;
then I will receive you and I will be a father to you, and you
shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty."
[2COR 6:14-18]
And when Kephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face
because he clearly was wrong. For, until some people came from
James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he
began to draw back and separated himself, because he was afraid of
the circumcised. And the rest of the Jews (also) acted
hypocritically along with him, with the result that even Barnabas
was carried away by their hypocrisy. But when I saw that they were
not on the right road in line with the truth of the gospel, I said
to Kephas in front of all, "If you, though a Jew, are living
like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles
to live like Jews?" [GAL 2:11-14] [Note: This action of
Paul's does not contradict papal infallibility. Peter's teachings
on faith and morals are infallible, but out of human weaknesses,
Peter was not observing his own teachings. Papal
infallibility covers only teachings on faith and morals in certain
circumstances - it does not mean that all the pope's personal
actions are infallible.]
For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit
again to the yoke of slavery. It is I, Paul, who am telling you
that if you have yourselves circumcised, Christ will be of no
benefit to you. Once again I declare to every man who has himself
circumcised that he is bound to observe the entire law. You are
separated from Christ, you who are trying to be justified by law;
you have fallen from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we
await the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus, neither
circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only
faith working through love. You were running well; who hindered
you from following (the) truth? That enticement does not come from
the one who called you. A little yeast leavens the whole batch of
dough. I am confident of you in the Lord that you will not take a
different view, and that the one who is troubling you will bear
the condemnation, whoever he may be. [GAL 5:1-10]
We ought to thank God always for you, brothers, as is fitting,
because your faith flourishes ever more, and the love of every one
of you for one another grows ever greater. Accordingly, we
ourselves boast of you in the churches of God regarding your
endurance and faith in all your persecutions and the afflictions
you endure. This is evidence of the just judgment of God, so that
you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God for which you
are suffering. For it is surely just on God's part to repay with
afflictions those who are afflicting you, and to grant rest along
with us to you who are undergoing afflictions, at the revelation
of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels, in blazing
fire, inflicting punishment on those who do not acknowledge God
and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These
will pay the penalty of eternal ruin, separated from the presence
of the Lord and from the glory of his power, when he comes to be
glorified among his holy ones and to be marveled at on that day
among all who have believed, for our testimony to you was
believed. [2THES 1:3-10]
It was fitting that we should have such a high priest: holy,
innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the
heavens. [HEB 7:26]
