"Are you really going to make yourself king over us?"
his brothers asked him. "Or impose your rule on us?" So
they hated him all the more because of his talk about his dreams.
[GEN 37:8]
Joseph then kissed all his brothers, crying over each of them;
and only then were his brothers able to talk with him. [GEN 45:15]
While he was talking with them, the Philistine champion, by
name Goliath of Gath, came up from the ranks of the Philistines
and spoke as before, and David listened. When the Israelites saw
the man, they all retreated before him, very much afraid. The
Israelites had been saying: "Do you see this man coming up?
He comes up to insult Israel. If anyone should kill him, the king
would give him great wealth, and his daughter as well, and would
grant exemption to his father's family in Israel." David now
said to the men standing by: "What will be done for the man
who kills this Philistine and frees Israel of the disgrace? Who is
this uncircumcised Philistine in any case, that he should insult
the armies of the living God?" They repeated the same words
to him and said, "That is how the man who kills him will be
rewarded." When Eliab, his oldest brother, heard him speaking
with the men, he grew angry with David and said: "Why did you
come down? With whom have you left those sheep in the desert
meanwhile? I know your arrogance and your evil intent. You came
down to enjoy the battle!" David replied, "What have I
done now? - I was only talking." Yet he turned from him to
another and asked the same question; and everyone gave him the
same answer as before. [1SAM 17:23-30]
"Now, see what you can do, for you must realize that otherwise
evil is in store for our master and for his whole family. He is so
mean that no one can talk to him." [1SAM 25:17]
So the king stepped out and sat at the gate. When all the
people were informed that the king was sitting at the gate, they
came into his presence. Now the Israelites had fled to their
separate tents, but throughout the tribes of Israel all the people
were arguing among themselves, saying to one another: "The
king delivered us from the clutches of our enemies, and it was he
who rescued us from the grip of the Philistines. But now he has
fled from the country before Absalom, and Absalom, whom we
anointed over us, died in battle. Why, then, should you remain
silent about restoring the king to his palace?" When the talk
of all Israel reached the king, David sent word to the priests
Zadok and Abiathar: "Say to the elders of Judah: 'Why should
you be last to restore the king to his palace? You are my
brothers, you are my bone and flesh. Why should you be last to
restore the king?'" [2SAM 19:9-13]
The king was talking with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God. "Tell me," he said, "all the great things that Elisha has done." Just as he was relating to the king how his master had restored a dead person to life, the very woman whose son Elisha had restored to life came to the king to claim her house and field. "My lord king," Gehazi said, "this is the woman, and this is that son of hers whom Elisha restored to life."
[2KGS 8:4-5]
When Jehu rejoined his master's servants, they asked him, "Is all well? Why did that madman come to you?" You know that kind of man and his talk, he replied. But they said, "Not at all! Come, tell us." So he told them what the young man had said to him, and finally, "Thus says the LORD: 'I anoint you king over Israel.'" At once each took his garment, spread it under Jehu on the bare steps, blew the trumpet, and cried out, "Jehu is king!"
[2KGS 9:11-13]
Then Judas and his brothers began to be feared, and dread fell upon the Gentiles about them. His fame reached the king, and all the Gentiles talked about the battles of Judas.
[1MACC 3:25-26]
The land was at rest all the days of Simon, who sought the
good of his nation. His people were delighted with his
power and his magnificence throughout his reign. He enlarged
the borders of his nation and gained control of the country.
The people cultivated their land in peace; the land yielded
its produce and the trees of the field their fruit. Old men
sat in the squares, all talking about the good
times, while the young men wore the glorious apparel of war. [1MACC 14:4,6,8-9]
Then Job answered and said: I have heard this sort of thing
many times. Wearisome comforters are you all! Is there no end
to windy words? Or what sickness have you that you speak on?
I also could talk as you do, were you in my place. I could
declaim over you, or wag my head at you; I could strengthen
you with talk, or shake my head with silent lips. If I speak,
this pain I have will not be checked; if I leave off, it will
not depart from me. But now that I am exhausted and
stunned, all my company has closed in on me. [JOB 16:1-7]
Yet the righteous shall hold to his way, and he who has
clean hands increase in strength. But turn now, and come on
again; for I shall not find a wise man among you! My days are
passed away, my plans are at an end, the cherished purposes
of my heart. Such men change the night into day; where there
is darkness they talk of approaching light. [JOB 17:9-12]
Free me from disgrace and contempt, for I observe your decrees.
Though princes meet and talk against me, your servant studies your laws.
Your decrees are my delight; they are my counselors. [PS
119:22-24]
Put away from you dishonest talk, deceitful speech put far from
you. [PROV 4:24]
A scoundrel, a villain, is he who deals in crooked talk. [PROV
6:12]
In all labor there is profit, but mere talk tends only to
penury. [PROV 14:23]
Words from the wise man's mouth win favor, but the fool's lips consume him. The beginning of his words is folly, and the end of his talk is utter madness; yet the fool multiplies words. Man knows not what is to come, for who can tell him what is to come after him? [ECCL
10:12-14]
Honor and dishonor through talking! A man's tongue can be his
downfall. [SIRACH 5:15]
Feared in the city is the man of railing speech, and he who
talks rashly is hated. [SIRACH 9:18]
When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more. Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten. Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you. [SIRACH
13:9-11]
One man is silent and is thought wise, another is talkative and
is disliked. [SIRACH 20:4]
He who talks too much is detested; he who pretends to authority
is hated. [SIRACH 20:7]
The lips of the impious talk of what is not their concern, but
the words of the prudent are carefully weighed. [SIRACH 21:25]
Like a song in time of mourning is inopportune talk [Taken from
SIRACH 22:6]
He talks with a slumberer who talks with a fool, for when it is
over, he will say, "What was that?" [SIRACH 22:8]
Let not your mouth become used to coarse talk, for in it lies
sinful matter. [SIRACH 23:13]
The conversation of the wicked is offensive, their laughter is wanton guilt. Their oath-filled talk makes the hair stand on end,
their brawls make one stop one's ears. [SIRACH 27:13-14]
He who has shifty eyes plots mischief and no one can ward him off;
In your presence he uses honeyed talk, and admires your every word, But later he changes his tone and twists your words to your ruin. There is nothing that I hate so much, and the LORD hates him as well. [SIRACH
27:22-24]
If you are chosen to preside at dinner, be not puffed
up, but with the guests be as one of themselves; Take
care of them first before you sit down; when you have fulfilled
your duty, then take your place, To share in their
joy and win praise for your hospitality. Being older, you may
talk; that is only your right, but temper your wisdom, not to
disturb the singing. When wine is present, do not pour out
discourse, and flaunt not your wisdom at the wrong time. [SIRACH
32:1-4]
Then the spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and he told me to
say: Thus says the LORD: This is the way you talk, house of
Israel, and what you are plotting I well know. [EZEK 11:5]
As for you, son of man, your countrymen are talking about you
along the walls and in the doorways of houses. They say to one
another, "Come and hear the latest word that comes from the
LORD." My people come to you as people always do; they sit
down before you and hear your words, but they will not obey them,
for lies are on their lips and their desires are fixed on
dishonest gain. For them you are only a ballad singer, with a
pleasant voice and a clever touch. They listen to your words, but
they will not obey them. But when it comes - and it is surely
coming! - they shall know that there was a prophet among them. [EZEK
33:30-33]
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. One of the maids came over to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean."
But he denied it in front of everyone, saying, "I do not know what you are talking about!"
[MT 26:69-70]
While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the high
priest's maids came along. Seeing Peter warming himself, she
looked intently at him and said, "You too were with the
Nazarene, Jesus." But he denied it saying, "I neither
know nor understand what you are talking about." So he went
out into the outer court. (Then the cock crowed.) The maid saw him
and began again to say to the bystanders, "This man is one of
them." Once again he denied it. A little later the bystanders
said to Peter once more, "Surely you are one of them; for you
too are a Galilean." He began to curse and to swear, "I
do not know this man about whom you are talking." And
immediately a cock crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the
word that Jesus had said to him, "Before the cock crows twice
you will deny me three times." He broke down and wept. [MK
14:66-72]
Then Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." And the angel said to him in reply, "I am Gabriel,
who stand before God. I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this good news. But now you will be speechless and unable to talk
until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time."
[LK 1:18-20]
The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything." Jesus said to her, "I am he,
the one who is speaking with you." At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman,
but still no one said, "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you talking with her?"
[JN 4:25-27]
He said this, and then told them, "Our friend Lazarus is
asleep, but I am going to awaken him." So the disciples said
to him, "Master, if he is asleep, he will be saved." But
Jesus was talking about his death, while they thought that he
meant ordinary sleep. So then Jesus said to them clearly,
"Lazarus has died. And I am glad for you that I was not
there, that you may believe. Let us go to him." [JN 11:11-15]
"I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is
coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will
tell you clearly about the Father. On that day you will ask in my
name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.
For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and
have come to believe that I came from God. I came from the Father
and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going
back to the Father." His disciples said, "Now you are
talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize
that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone
question you. Because of this we believe that you came from
God." [JN 16:25-30]
On the first day of the week when we gathered to break bread,
Paul spoke to them because he was going to leave on the next day,
and he kept on speaking until midnight. There were many lamps in
the upstairs room where we were gathered, and a young man named
Eutychus who was sitting on the window sill was sinking into a
deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. Once overcome by sleep, he
fell down from the third story and when he was picked up, he was
dead. Paul went down, threw himself upon him, and said as he
embraced him, "Don't be alarmed; there is life in him." [ACTS
20:7-10]
But who indeed are you, a human being, to talk back to God?
Will what is made say to its maker, "Why have you created me
so?" [ROM 9:20]
Brothers, I could not talk to you as spiritual people, but as fleshly people, as infants in Christ. I fed you milk, not solid food, because you were unable to take it. Indeed, you are still not able, even now,
for you are still of the flesh. [Taken from 1COR 3:1-3]
But I will come to you soon, if the Lord is willing, and I shall ascertain not the talk of these inflated people but their power. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. [1COR
4:19-20]
When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a
child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside
childish things. [1COR 13:11]
Similarly, if you, because of speaking in tongues, do not utter
intelligible speech, how will anyone know what is being said? For
you will be talking to the air. [1COR 14:9]
Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among holy ones, no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place, but instead, thanksgiving.
Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
[EPH 5:3-5]
Some people have deviated from these and turned to meaningless talk, wanting to be teachers of the law, but without understanding either what they are saying or what they assert with such assurance.
[1TM 1:6-7]
And furthermore, they learn to be idlers, going about from
house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies as
well, talking about things that ought not to be mentioned. [1TM
5:13]
Avoid profane, idle talk, for such people will become more and more godless, and their teaching will spread like gangrene. [Taken from 2TM
2:16-17]
For a bishop as God's steward must be blameless, not arrogant,
not irritable, not a drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for
sordid gain, but hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just,
holy, and self-controlled, holding fast to the true message as
taught so that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine
and to refute opponents. For there are also many rebels, idle
talkers and deceivers... It is imperative to silence them,
as they are upsetting whole families by teaching for sordid gain
what they should not. [Taken from TI 1:7-11]
Their eyes are full of adultery and insatiable for sin. They
seduce unstable people, and their hearts are trained in greed.
Accursed children! Abandoning the straight road, they have gone
astray, following the road of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved
payment for wrongdoing, but he received a rebuke for his own
crime: a mute beast spoke with a human voice and restrained the
prophet's madness. These people are waterless springs and mists
driven by a gale; for them the gloom of darkness has been
reserved. For, talking empty bombast, they seduce with licentious
desires of the flesh those who have barely escaped from people who
live in error. They promise them freedom, though they themselves
are slaves of corruption, for a person is a slave of whatever
overcomes him. For if they, having escaped the defilements of the
world through the knowledge of (our) Lord and savior Jesus Christ,
again become entangled and overcome by them, their last condition
is worse than their first. For it would have been better for them
not to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it
to turn back from the holy commandment handed down to them. [2PT
2:14-21]
I have much to write to you, but I do not wish to write with pen and ink. Instead, I hope to see you soon, when we can talk face to face.

The Israelites called
this food manna. It was like coriander seed, but white, and it
tasted like wafers made with honey. [EX 16:31]
Manna was like coriander seed and had the appearance of bdellium.
When they had gone about and gathered it up, the people would grind it between millstones or pound it in a mortar, then cook it in a pot and make it into loaves, which tasted like cakes made with oil.
[NUM 11:7-8]
Thus the LORD saved Israel that day. The battle continued past
Beth-horon; the whole people, about ten thousand combatants, were
with Saul, and there was scattered fighting in every town in the
hill country of Ephraim. And Saul swore a very rash oath that day,
putting the people under this ban: "Cursed be the man who
takes food before evening, before I am able to avenge myself on my
enemies." So none of the people tasted food. Indeed, there
was a honeycomb lying on the ground, and when the soldiers came to
the comb the swarm had left it; yet no one would raise a hand to
his mouth from it, because the people feared the oath. [1SAM 14:23-26]
Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done."
Jonathan replied, "I only tasted a little honey from the end
of the staff I was holding. Am I to die for this?" [1SAM
14:43]
I am now eighty years old. Can I distinguish between good and
bad? Can your servant taste what he eats and drinks, or still
appreciate the voices of singers and songstresses? Why should your
servant be any further burden to my lord the king? [2SAM 19:36]
Eleazar, one of the foremost scribes, a man of advanced age and noble appearance, was being forced to open his mouth to eat
[unlawful food] But preferring a glorious death to a life of defilement, he spat out
[the unlawful food], and went forward of his own accord to the instrument of torture, as men ought to do who have the courage to reject the food which it is unlawful to taste even for love of life.
[Taken from 2MACC 6:18-20]
Is there insincerity on my tongue, or cannot my taste discern
falsehood? [JOB 6:30]
Which of all these does not know that the hand of God has done this? In his hand is the soul of every living thing, and the life breath of all mankind. Does not the ear judge words as the mouth tastes food? [JOB
12:9-11]
Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted
happiness. [JOB 21:25]
For the ear tests words, as the taste does food. [JOB 34:3]
Pleasing words are a honeycomb, sweet to the taste and
healthful to the body. [PROV 16:24]
If you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste; Such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul.
If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will not be cut off. [PROV
24:13-14]
And again, even in the water, fire blazed beyond its
strength so as to consume the produce of the wicked land.
Instead of this, you nourished your people with food of
angels and furnished them bread from heaven, ready to
hand, untoiled-for, endowed with all delights and
conforming to every taste. For this substance of yours revealed
your sweetness toward your children, and serving the
desire of him who received it, was blended to whatever flavor
each one wished. [WISDOM 16:19-21]
What good is an offering to an idol that can neither taste nor
smell? [SIRACH 30:19]
For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything
suited to every taste. [SIRACH 37:27]
The name Josiah is like blended incense, made lasting by a
skilled perfumer. Precious is his memory, like honey to the taste,
like music at a banquet. [SIRACH 49:1]
Moab has been tranquil from his youth, has rested upon his
lees; He was not poured from one flask to another, he went not
into exile. Thus he kept his taste, and his scent was not lost. [JER
48:11]
When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his
throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and
sat in the ashes. Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh,
by decree of the king and his nobles: "Neither man nor beast,
neither cattle nor sheep, shall taste anything; they shall not
eat, nor shall they drink water. Man and beast shall be covered
with sackcloth and call loudly to God; every man shall turn from
his evil way and from the violence he has in hand. Who knows, God
may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath, so that we
shall not perish." [JONAH 3:6-9]
"You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its
taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for
anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot." [MT 5:13]
"Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not
taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his
kingdom." [MT 16:28]
And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull), they gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall.
But when he had tasted it, he refused to drink.
[MT 27:33-34]
He also said to them, "Amen, I say to you, there are some
standing here who will not taste death until they see that the
kingdom of God has come in power." [MK 9:1]
"Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not
taste death until they see the kingdom of God." [LK 9:27]
One of his fellow guests on hearing this said to him,
"Blessed is the one who will dine in the kingdom of
God." He replied to him, "A man gave a great dinner to
which he invited many. When the time for the dinner came, he
dispatched his servant to say to those invited, 'Come, everything
is now ready.' But one by one, they all began to excuse
themselves. The first said to him, 'I have purchased a field and
must go to examine it; I ask you, consider me excused.' And
another said, 'I have purchased five yoke of oxen and am on my way
to evaluate them; I ask you, consider me excused.' And another
said, 'I have just married a woman, and therefore I cannot come.'
The servant went and reported this to his master. Then the master
of the house in a rage commanded his servant, 'Go out quickly into
the streets and alleys of the town and bring in here the poor and
the crippled, the blind and the lame.' The servant reported, 'Sir,
your orders have been carried out and still there is room.' The
master then ordered the servant, 'Go out to the highways and
hedgerows and make people come in that my home may be filled. For,
I tell you, none of those men who were invited will taste my
dinner.'" [LK 14:15-24]
"Salt is good, but if salt itself loses its taste, with
what can its flavor be restored?" [LK 14:34]
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and
the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also
invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of
Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (And) Jesus said
to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has
not yet come." His mother said to the servers, "Do
whatever he tells you." Now there were six stone water jars
there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to
thirty gallons. Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with
water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them,
"Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So
they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had
become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the
servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the
bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves good wine first,
and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you
have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this as the
beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his
glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. [JN 2:1-11]
When day came, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by
oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. There were
more than forty who formed this conspiracy. They went to the chief
priests and elders and said, "We have bound ourselves by a
solemn oath to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. You,
together with the Sanhedrin, must now make an official request to
the commander to have him bring him down to you, as though you
meant to investigate his case more thoroughly. We on our part are
prepared to kill him before he arrives." [ACTS 23:12-15]
If you died with Christ to the elemental powers of the world, why do you submit to regulations as if you were still living in the world?
"Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!" These are all things destined to perish with use; they accord with human precepts and teachings.
[COL 2:20-22]
"You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor, subjecting all things under his feet."
In "subjecting" all things (to him), he left nothing not "subject to him." Yet at present we do not see "all things subject to him," but we do see Jesus "crowned with glory and honor" because he
suffered death, he who "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels," that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
[HEB 2:7-9]
For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened and tasted the heavenly gift
and shared in the Holy Spirit and tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to
come, and then have fallen away, to bring them to repentance again, since they are recrucifying the Son of God for themselves
and holding him up to contempt.
[HEB 6:4-6]
Rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, insincerity, envy, and all slander; like newborn infants, long for pure spiritual milk so that through it you may grow into salvation, for you have tasted that the Lord is good. [1PT
2:1-3]
Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, "Go, take the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land." So I went up to the angel and told him to give me the small scroll. He said to me, "Take and swallow it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will taste as sweet
as honey." I took the small scroll from the angel's hand and swallowed it. In my mouth it was like sweet honey, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour.

Do not lacerate your
bodies for the dead, and do not tattoo yourselves. I am the LORD.

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the
Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.

Now the serpent was the
most cunning of all the animals that the LORD God had made. The
serpent asked the woman, "Did God really tell you not to eat
from any of the trees in the garden?" The woman answered the
serpent: "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden;
it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden
that God said, 'You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you
die.'" But the serpent said to the woman: "You certainly
will not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it
your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what
is good and what is bad." The woman saw that the tree was
good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining
wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also
gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
[GEN 3:1-6]
But they soon forgot all he had done; they had no patience for his plan. In the desert they gave way to their cravings, tempted God in the wasteland. So he gave them what they asked and sent among them a wasting disease. [PS
106:13-15]
Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky! But Ahaz answered, "I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!"
[ISA 7:11-12]
You have defied me in word, says the LORD, yet you ask,
"What have we spoken against you?" You have said,
"It is vain to serve God, and what do we profit by
keeping his command, And going about in penitential
dress in awe of the LORD of hosts? Rather must we call the
proud blessed; for indeed evildoers prosper, and even
tempt God with impunity." [MAL 3:13-15]
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted
by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and
afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him,
"If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become
loaves of bread." He said in reply, "It is
written: 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every
word that comes forth from the mouth of God.'" Then the devil
took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of
the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God,
throw yourself down. For it is written: 'He will command
his angels concerning you' and 'with their hands they will
support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus answered him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not put
the Lord, your God, to the test.'" Then the devil took him up
to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the
world in their magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I
shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship
me." At this, Jesus said to him, "Get away, Satan! It
is written: 'The Lord, your God, shall you
worship and him alone shall you serve.'" Then the devil
left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him. [MT 4:1-11]
At once the Spirit drove him out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.
[MK 1:12-13]
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and
was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be
tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when
they were over he was hungry. The devil said to him, "If you
are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."
Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by
bread alone.'" Then he took him up and showed him all the
kingdoms of the world in a single instant. The devil said to him,
"I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it
has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish.
All this will be yours, if you worship me." Jesus said to him
in reply, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord,
your God, and him alone shall you serve.'" Then he led
him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and
said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down
from here, for it is written: 'He will command his angels
concerning you, to guard you,' and: 'With their hands
they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a
stone.'" Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, 'You
shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.'" When the
devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a
time. [LK 4:1-13]
Do not deprive each other, except perhaps by mutual consent for
a time, to be free for prayer, but then return to one another, so
that Satan may not tempt you through your lack of self-control.
[1COR 7:5]
Brothers, even if a person is caught in some transgression, you
who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit,
looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted. [GAL
6:1]
For even when we were among you, we used to warn you in advance
that we would undergo affliction, just as has happened, as you
know. For this reason, when I too could bear it no longer, I sent
to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had
put you to the test and our toil might come to nothing. But just
now Timothy has returned to us from you, bringing us the good news
of your faith and love, and that you always think kindly of us and
long to see us as we long to see you. Because of this, we have
been reassured about you, brothers, in our every distress and
affliction, through your faith. For we now live, if you stand firm
in the Lord. [1THES 3:4-8]
Indeed, religion with contentment is a great gain. For we
brought nothing into the world, just as we shall not be able to
take anything out of it. If we have food and clothing, we shall be
content with that. Those who want to be rich are falling into
temptation and into a trap and into many foolish and harmful
desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love
of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire
for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced themselves
with many pains. [1TM 6:6-10]
Blessed is the man who perseveres in temptation, for when he
has been proved he will receive the crown of life that he promised
to those who love him. No one experiencing temptation should say,
"I am being tempted by God"; for God is not subject to
temptation to evil, and he himself tempts no one. Rather, each
person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
Then desire conceives and brings forth sin, and when sin reaches
maturity it gives birth to death. Do not be deceived, my beloved
brothers: all good giving and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no
alteration or shadow caused by change. He willed to give us birth
by the word of truth that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his
creatures. [JMS 1:12-18]

When Mattathias and his
friends heard of it, they mourned deeply for them. "If we all
do as our kinsmen have done," they said to one another,
"and do not fight against the Gentiles for our lives and our
traditions, they will soon destroy us from the earth." On
that day they came to this decision: "Let us fight against
anyone who attacks us on the sabbath, so that we may not all die
as our kinsmen died in the hiding places." [1MACC 2:39-41]
The Gentiles filled the temple with debauchery
and revelry... A man could not keep the sabbath or celebrate the
traditional feasts, nor even admit that he was a Jew. [Taken from
2MACC 6:4,6]
Reject not the tradition of old men which they
have learned from their fathers; From it you will obtain the
knowledge how to answer in time of need. [SIRACH 8:9]
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from
Jerusalem and said, "Why do your disciples break the
tradition of the elders? They do not wash (their) hands when they
eat a meal." He said to them in reply, "And why do you
break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For
God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses
father or mother shall die.' But you say, 'Whoever says to father
or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is
dedicated to God," need not honor his father.' You have
nullified the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy about you when he said: 'This
people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from
me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human
precepts.'" He summoned the crowd and said to them,
"Hear and understand. It is not what enters one's mouth that
defiles that person; but what comes out of the mouth is what
defiles one." Then his disciples approached and said to him,
"Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard
what you said?" He said in reply, "Every plant that my
heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone;
they are blind guides (of the blind). If a blind person leads a
blind person, both will fall into a pit." Then Peter said to
him in reply, "Explain (this) parable to us." He said to
them, "Are even you still without understanding? Do you not
realize that everything that enters the mouth passes into the
stomach and is expelled into the latrine? But the things that come
out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile. For from
the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, unchastity, theft,
false witness, blasphemy. These are what defile a person, but to
eat with unwashed hands does not defile." [MT 15:1-20]
Now when the Pharisees with some scribes who had
come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they observed that some
of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed,
hands. (For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat
without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of
the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat
without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that
they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and
jugs and kettles (and beds).) So the Pharisees and scribes
questioned him, "Why do your disciples not follow the
tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean
hands?" He responded, "Well did Isaiah prophesy about
you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors me with
their lips, but their hearts are far from me; In vain do they
worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.' You disregard
God's commandment but cling to human tradition." He went on
to say, "How well you have set aside the commandment of God
in order to uphold your tradition! For Moses said, 'Honor your
father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or mother
shall die.' Yet you say, 'If a person says to father or mother,
"Any support you might have had from me is qorban"'
(meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for
his father or mother. You nullify the word of God in favor of your
tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such
things." He summoned the crowd again and said to them,
"Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one
from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out
from within are what defile." [MK 7:1-15]
I praise you because you remember me in
everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them
on to you. [1COR 11:2]
Now I want you to know, brothers, that the
gospel preached by me is not of human origin. For I did not
receive it from a human being, nor was I taught it, but it came
through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you heard of my former
way of life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond
measure and tried to destroy it, and progressed in Judaism beyond
many of my contemporaries among my race, since I was even more a
zealot for my ancestral traditions. But when (God), who from my
mother's womb had set me apart and called me through his grace,
was pleased to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him
to the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult flesh and blood,
nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me;
rather, I went into Arabia and then returned to Damascus. Then
after three years I went up to Jerusalem to confer with Kephas and
remained with him for fifteen days. But I did not see any other of
the apostles, only James the brother of the Lord. (As to what I am
writing to you, behold, before God, I am not lying.) Then I went
into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. And I was unknown
personally to the churches of Judea that are in Christ; they only
kept hearing that "the one who once was persecuting us is now
preaching the faith he once tried to destroy." So they
glorified God because of me. [GAL 1:11-24] [Note: Some ancient
languages have no word for cousin (and other relatives) so the
term "brothers" may be used to refer to relatives
other than blood brothers. The use of this terminology does not
mean that Jesus had blood brothers, which of course he didn't
since Mary is an ever virgin. For more information on this topic,
visit the Non-Catholics section.]
I say this so that no one may deceive you by
specious arguments. For even if I am absent in the flesh, yet I am
with you in spirit, rejoicing as I observe your good order and the
firmness of your faith in Christ. So, as you received Christ Jesus
the Lord, walk in him, rooted in him and built upon him and
established in the faith as you were taught, abounding in
thanksgiving. See to it that no one captivate you with an empty,
seductive philosophy according to human tradition, according to
the elemental powers of the world and not according to Christ.
[COL 2:4-8]
Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to
the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement
or by a letter of ours. [2THES 2:15]
We instruct you, brothers, in the name of (our)
Lord Jesus Christ, to shun any brother who conducts himself in a
disorderly way and not according to the tradition they received
from us. [2THES 3:6]

BIG Book of Latin Activities For Catholics
Beginning - Intermediate (Vol. 1)
"Suitable For Children Or
Adults!" ~ "Perfect For Home Schoolers!"
+ + +
As many faithful Catholics already know,
the majestic
Latin language – the 'official language' of the Catholic Church –
promotes unity, helps safeguard the purity of doctrine, connects us with
our Catholic ancestors, allows us to pray in "one voice", and even ties
back to the inscription on the Cross which was written in Hebrew, Latin,
and Greek. The Latin language is still used today in the precious
treasure that is the
Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, in 'everyday speech' (much of
English is derived from Latin), in mottos, in specialized fields, and in
educational endeavors. It has been shown that the study of Latin brings
many benefits. "And, Latin is truly the language of heaven!"
If you enjoy Latin, you may be glad to know that
this full-sized (8.5" x 11"), tradition-minded publication features an
assortment of activity types related to Latin (including: word searches,
crosswords, coloring activities, challenges, fill-ins, spelling bee,
quizzes, unscrambles, true/false, multiple choice, matching, cross-offs,
circling, word associations, translation exercises, and more...), and
treats of various topics (including: common Latin words, Latin language
facts, Latin grammar, nouns & verbs, abbreviations,
phrases / sayings / mottos, prefixes, cardinal numbers, grammatical gender,
inflection, word roots, diacritics / accenting, pronunciation, Latin
prayers / hymns, Scripture verses, Catholic phrases, and more...).
