Moses, however, said to the LORD, "If you please, LORD, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past, nor recently, nor now that you have spoken to your servant; but I am slow of speech and tongue." The LORD said to him, "Who gives one man speech and makes another deaf and dumb? Or who gives sight to one and makes another blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Go, then! It is I who will assist you in speaking and will teach you what you are to say." Yet he insisted, "If you please, Lord, send someone else!" [EX
4:10-13]
"The LORD will raise up against you a nation from afar,
from the end of the earth, that swoops down like an eagle, a
nation whose tongue you do not understand" [Taken from DEUT 28:49]
When Gideon led the soldiers down to the water, the LORD said to him, "You shall set to one side everyone who laps up the water as a dog does with its tongue; to the other, everyone who kneels down to drink." Those who lapped up the water raised to their mouths by hand numbered three hundred, but all the rest of the soldiers knelt down to drink the water. The LORD said to Gideon, "By means of the three hundred who lapped up the water I will save you and will deliver Midian into your power. So let all the other soldiers go home."
[JUDG 7:5-7]
The spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue. The God of Israel spoke; of me the Rock of Israel said, 'He that rules over men in justice, that rules in the fear of God, Is like the morning light at sunrise on a cloudless morning, making the greensward sparkle after rain.' [2SAM 23:2-4]
After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put out his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely held out his hands, as he spoke these noble words: "It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again." Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man's courage, because he regarded his sufferings as nothing.
[2MACC 7:10-12]
When the battle was over and they were joyfully departing, they discovered Nicanor lying there in all his armor; so they raised tumultuous shouts in their native tongue in praise of the divine Sovereign.
[2MACC 15:28-29]
Out of six troubles he will deliver you, and at the seventh no evil shall touch you. In famine he will deliver you from death, and in war from the threat of the sword; From the scourge of the tongue you shall be hidden, and shall not fear approaching ruin. [JOB 5:19-21]
Is there insincerity on my tongue, or cannot my taste discern
falsehood? [JOB 6:30]
Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth, and he hides it under his tongue, Though he retains it and will not let it go but keeps it still within his
mouth [Taken from JOB 20:12-13]
I will teach you the manner of God's dealings, and the way of the Almighty I will not conceal. As God lives, who withholds my deserts, the Almighty, who has made bitter my soul, So long as I still have life in me and the breath of God is in my nostrils, My lips shall not speak falsehood, nor my tongue utter deceit! [JOB 27:1-4]
The chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands; The voice of the princes was silenced, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths. [JOB 29:9-10]
Therefore, O Job, hear my discourse, and hearken to all my words.
Behold, now I open my mouth; my tongue and my voice form words.
I will state directly what is in my mind, my lips shall utter knowledge sincerely; For the spirit of God has made me, the breath of the Almighty keeps me alive. [JOB 33:1-4]
For there is no sincerity in their mouths; their hearts are corrupt.
Their throats are open graves; on their tongues are subtle lies.
Declare them guilty, God; make them fall by their own devices. Drive them out for their many sins; they have rebelled against you. [PS 5:10-11]
The wicked even boast of their greed; these robbers curse and scorn the LORD. In their insolence the wicked boast: "God doesn't care, doesn't even exist." Yet their affairs always succeed; they ignore your judgment on high; they sneer at all who oppose them. They say in their hearts, "We will never fall; never will we see misfortune."
Their mouths are full of oaths, violence, and lies; discord and evil are under their tongues. But you do see; you do observe this misery and sorrow; you take the matter in hand. To you the helpless can entrust their cause; you are the defender of orphans.
[PS 10:3-7,14]
Help, LORD, for no one loyal remains; the faithful have vanished from the human race Those who tell lies to one another speak with deceiving lips and a double heart.
May the LORD cut off all deceiving lips, and every boastful tongue, Those who say, "By our tongues we prevail; when our lips speak, who can lord it over us?" [PS 12:2-5]
As dry as a potsherd is my throat; my tongue sticks to my
palate; you lay me in the dust of death. [PS 22:16]
How great is your goodness, Lord, stored up for those who fear you. You display it for those who trust you, in the sight of all the people. You hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from scheming enemies. You keep them in your abode, safe from plotting tongues. [PS 31:20-21]
Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
Who among you loves life, takes delight in prosperous days? Keep your tongue from evil, your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The LORD has eyes for the just and ears for their cry. [PS 34:12-16]
Put to shame and confound all who relish my misfortune. Clothe with shame and disgrace those who lord it over me. But let those who favor my just cause shout for joy and be glad. May they ever say, "Exalted be the LORD who delights in the peace of his loyal servant." Then my tongue shall recount your justice, declare your praise, all the day long. [PS 35:26-28]
The mouths of the just utter wisdom; their tongues speak what
is right. [PS 37:30]
I said, "I will watch my ways, lest I sin with my
tongue; I will set a curb on my mouth." [PS 39:2]
My heart is stirred by a noble theme, as I sing my ode to the
king. My tongue is the pen of a nimble scribe. [PS 45:2]
But to the wicked God says: "Why do you recite my commandments and profess my covenant with your lips? You hate discipline; you cast my words behind you! When you see thieves, you befriend them; with adulterers you throw in your lot. You give your mouth free rein for evil; you harness your tongue to deceit.
You sit maligning your own kin, slandering the child of your own mother. When you do these things should I be silent? Or do you think that I am like you? I accuse you, I lay the charge before you." [PS 50:16-21]
Rescue me from death, God, my saving God, that my tongue may
praise your healing power. [PS 51:16]
Why do you glory in evil, you scandalous liar? All day long you plot destruction; your tongue is like a sharpened razor, you skillful deceiver. You love evil rather than good, lies rather than honest speech. You love any word that destroys, you deceitful tongue. [Taken from PS 52:3-6]
Hide me from the malicious crowd, the mob of evildoers. They sharpen their tongues like swords, ready their bows for arrows of poison words. [PS 64:3-4]
They will be brought down by their own tongues; all who see them will shake their heads. Then all will fear and proclaim God's deed,
pondering what has been done. The just will rejoice and take refuge in the LORD; all the upright will glory in their God. [PS 64:9-11]
Come and hear, all you who fear God, while I recount what has been done for me. I called to the Lord with my mouth; praise was upon my tongue. Had I cherished evil in my heart, the Lord would not have heard. But God did hear and listened to my voice in prayer. [PS 66:16-19]
Yes, my tongue shall recount your justice day by day. For those
who sought my ruin will have been shamed and disgraced. [PS 71:24]
Out of their stupidity comes sin; evil thoughts flood their hearts.
They scoff and spout their malice; from on high they utter threats.
They set their mouths against the heavens, their tongues roam the earth. [PS 73:7-9]
They remembered that God was their rock, God Most High, their redeemer. But they deceived him with their mouths, lied to him with their tongues. Their hearts were not constant toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. But God is merciful and forgave their sin; he did not utterly destroy them. Time and again he turned back his anger, unwilling to unleash all his rage. [PS 78:35-38]
O God, whom I praise, do not be silent, for wicked and treacherous mouths attack me. They speak against me with lying tongues; with hateful words they surround me, attacking me without cause. [PS 109:2-3]
How sweet to my tongue is your promise, sweeter than honey to
my mouth! [PS 119:103]
May my tongue sing of your promise, for all your commands are
just. [PS 119:172]
LORD, deliver me from lying lips, from treacherous tongues. What will the Lord inflict on you, O treacherous tongue, and
what more besides? [PS 120:2-3]
When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, then we thought we were dreaming. Our mouths were filled with laughter; our tongues sang for joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD had done great things for them." [PS 126:1-2]
May my tongue stick to my palate if I do not remember you, If I
do not exalt Jerusalem beyond all my delights. [PS 137:6]
Even before a word is on my tongue, LORD, you know it all. [PS
139:4]
Deliver me, LORD, from the wicked; preserve me from the violent,
From those who plan evil in their hearts, who stir up conflicts every day, Who sharpen their tongues like serpents, venom of asps upon their lips. [PS 140:2-4]
There are six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to him; Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood; A heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that run swiftly to evil, The false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers. [PROV 6:16-19]
Observe, my son, your father's bidding, and reject not your mother's teaching; Keep them fastened over your heart always, put them around your neck; For the bidding is a lamp, and the teaching a light, and a way to life are the reproofs of discipline; To keep you from your neighbor's wife, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. [PROV 6:20-24]
Like choice silver is the just man's tongue; the heart of the
wicked is of little worth. [PROV 10:20]
The mouth of the just yields wisdom, but the perverse tongue
will be cut off. [PROV 10:31]
The prating of some men is like sword thrusts, but the tongue
of the wise is healing. [PROV 12:18]
Truthful lips endure forever, the lying tongue, for only a
moment. [PROV 12:19]
The tongue of the wise pours out knowledge, but the mouth of
fools spurts forth folly. [PROV 15:2]
A soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse one crushes
the spirit. [PROV 15:4]
Man may make plans in his heart, but what the tongue utters is
from the LORD. [PROV 16:1]
The evil man gives heed to wicked lips, and listens to
falsehood from a mischievous tongue. [PROV 17:4]
He who is perverse in heart finds no good, and a double-tongued
man falls into trouble. [PROV 17:20]
Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who make
it a friend shall eat its fruit. [PROV 18:21]
He who makes a fortune by a lying tongue is chasing a bubble
over deadly snares. [PROV 21:6]
He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from
trouble. [PROV 21:23]
By patience is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue will break
a bone. [PROV 25:15]
The north wind brings rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry
countenance. [PROV 25:23]
The lying tongue is its owner's enemy, and the flattering mouth
works ruin. [PROV 26:28]
He who rebukes a man gets more thanks in the end than one with
a flattering tongue. [PROV 28:23]
She opens her mouth in wisdom, and on her tongue is kindly
counsel. [PROV 31:26]
For wisdom is a kindly spirit, yet she acquits not the
blasphemer of his guilty lips; Because God is the witness of his
inmost self and the sure observer of his heart and the listener to
his tongue. [WISDOM 1:6]
Therefore guard against profitless grumbling, and from calumny
withhold your tongues; For a stealthy utterance does not go
unpunished, and a lying mouth slays the soul. [WISDOM 1:11]
For it is through speech that wisdom becomes known, and
knowledge through the tongue's rejoinder. [SIRACH 4:24]
Honor and dishonor through talking! A man's tongue can be his
downfall. [SIRACH 5:15]
Be not called a detractor; use not your tongue for calumny;
For shame has been created for the thief, and the reproach of
his neighbor for the double-tongued. [SIRACH 5:16-17]
Say nothing harmful, small or great; be not a foe instead of a
friend; A bad name and disgrace will you acquire: "That for
the evil man with double tongue!" [SIRACH 6:1]
But praise is offered by the wise man's tongue; its rightful
steward will proclaim it. [SIRACH 15:10]
The LORD from the earth created man, and in his own image he made him. Limited days of life he gives him and makes him return to earth again. He endows man with a strength of his own, and with power over all things else on earth. He forms men's tongues and eyes and ears, and imparts to them an understanding heart. With wisdom and knowledge he fills them; good and evil he shows them.
[SIRACH 17:1-3,5-6]
Then, too, a man can slip and not mean it; who has not sinned
with his tongue? [SIRACH 19:15]
A fool has no friends, nor thanks for his generosity; Those who eat his bread have an evil tongue. How many times they laugh him to scorn! [SIRACH 20:15-16]
A fall to the ground is less sudden than a slip of the tongue;
that is why the downfall of the wicked comes so quickly. [SIRACH
20:17]
Who will set a guard over my mouth, and upon my lips an
effective seal, That I may not fail through them, that my tongue
may not destroy me? [SIRACH 22:27]
There are nine who come to my mind as blessed, a tenth whom my
tongue proclaims: The man who finds joy in his children, and he
who lives to see his enemies' downfall. [SIRACH 25:7]
Happy is he who dwells with a sensible wife, and he who plows
not like a donkey yoked with an ox. Happy is he who sins not with
his tongue, and he who serves not his inferior. [SIRACH 25:8]
There are three things at which my heart quakes, a fourth before which I quail: Though false charges in public, trial before all the people, and lying testimony are harder to bear than death, A jealous wife is heartache and mourning and a scourging tongue like the other three. [SIRACH 26:5-6]
Cursed be gossips and the double-tongued, for they destroy the
peace of many. [SIRACH 28:13]
A meddlesome tongue subverts many, and makes them refugees
among the peoples; It destroys walled cities, and overthrows
powerful dynasties. A meddlesome tongue can drive virtuous women
from their homes and rob them of the fruit of their toil; Whoever
heeds it has no rest, nor can he dwell in peace. A blow from a
whip raises a welt, but a blow from the tongue smashes bones; Many
have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not as many as by the
tongue. [SIRACH 28:14-18]
Take care not to slip by your tongue and fall victim to your
foe waiting in ambush. [SIRACH 28:26]
Good and evil, death and life, their absolute mistress is the
tongue. [SIRACH 37:18]
I give you thanks, O God of my father; I praise you, O God my
savior! I will make known your name, refuge of my life; you have
been my helper against my adversaries. You have saved me from
death, and kept back my body from the pit, From the clutches of
the nether world you have snatched my feet; you have delivered me,
in your great mercy From the scourge of a slanderous tongue, and
from lips that went over to falsehood; From the snare of those who
watched for my downfall, and from the power of those who sought my
life; From many a danger you have saved me [Taken from SIRACH 51:1-3]
The LORD has granted me my lips as a reward, and my tongue will
declare his praises. [SIRACH 51:22]
Therefore, as the tongue of fire licks up stubble, as dry grass
shrivels in the flame, Even so their root shall become rotten and
their blossom scatter like dust; For they have spurned the law of
the LORD of hosts, and scorned the word of the Holy One of Israel.
[ISA 5:24]
The LORD shall dry up the tongue of the Sea of Egypt, and wave
his hand over the Euphrates in his fierce anger And shatter it
into seven streamlets, so that it can be crossed in sandals. [ISA
11:15]
See the name of the LORD coming from afar in burning wrath,
with lowering clouds! His lips are filled with fury, his tongue is
like a consuming fire [Taken from ISA 30:27]
Your eyes will see a king in his splendor, they will look upon a vast land. Your mind will dwell on the terror: "Where is he who counted, where is he who weighed? Where is he who counted the towers?"
To the people of alien tongue you will look no more, the people of obscure speech, stammering in a language not understood. [ISA 33:17-19]
Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; With divine recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; Then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the dumb will sing. Streams will burst forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. [ISA 35:4-6]
The afflicted and the needy seek water in vain, their tongues
are parched with thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them; I, the God
of Israel, will not forsake them. [ISA 41:17]
Turn to me and be safe, all you ends of the earth, for I am God; there is no other! By myself I swear, uttering my just decree and my unalterable word: To me every knee shall bend; by me every tongue shall swear, Saying, "Only in the LORD are just deeds and power.
Before him in shame shall come all who vent their anger against
him." [ISA 45:22-24]
The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, That I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.
Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; And I have not rebelled, have not turned back. [ISA 50:4-5]
No weapon fashioned against you shall prevail; every tongue you
shall prove false that launches an accusation against you. This is
the lot of the servants of the LORD, their vindication from me,
says the LORD. [ISA 54:17]
But you, draw near, you sons of a sorceress, adulterous, wanton race! Of whom do you make sport, at whom do you open wide your mouth, and put out your tongue? Are you not rebellious children, a worthless race [Taken from ISA 57:3-4]
Lo, the hand of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. Rather, it is your crimes that separate you from your God, It is your sins that make him hide his face so that he will not hear you. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt; Your lips speak falsehood, and your tongue utters deceit. [ISA 59:1-3]
Would that I had in the desert a travelers' lodge! That I might
leave my people and depart from them. They are all adulterers, a
faithless band. They ready their tongues like a drawn bow; with
lying, and not with truth, they hold forth in the land. They go
from evil to evil, but me they know not, says the LORD. Be on your
guard, everyone against his neighbor; put no trust in any brother.
Every brother apes Jacob, the supplanter, every friend is guilty
of slander. Each one deceives the other, no one speaks the truth.
They have accustomed their tongues to lying, and are perverse, and
cannot repent. [JER 9:1-4]
A murderous arrow is his tongue, his mouth utters deceit; He
speaks cordially with his friends, but in his heart he lays an
ambush! [JER 9:7]
"Come," they said, "let us contrive a plot
against Jeremiah. It will not mean the loss of instruction from
the priests, nor of counsel from the wise, nor of messages from
the prophets. And so, let us destroy him by his own tongue; let us
carefully note his every word." [JER 18:18]
The tongue of the suckling cleaves to the roof of its mouth in
thirst; The babes cry for food, but there is no one to give it to
them. [LAM 4:4]
Their tongues are smoothed by woodworkers; they are covered
with gold and silver-but they are a fraud, and cannot speak.
[BARUCH 6:7]
I will make your tongue stick to your palate so that you will
be dumb and unable to rebuke them for being a rebellious house.
[EZEK 3:26]
They have again become useless, like a treacherous bow. Their
princes shall fall by the sword because of the insolence of their
tongues; thus they shall be mocked in the land of Egypt. [HOSEA
7:16]
You whose rich men are full of violence, whose inhabitants
speak falsehood with deceitful tongues in their heads! [MICAH
6:12]
But I will leave as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly, Who shall take refuge in the name of the LORD; the remnant of Israel. They shall do no wrong and speak no lies; Nor shall there be found in their mouths a deceitful tongue; They shall pasture and couch their flocks with none to disturb them. [ZEPH 3:12-13]
Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem and to implore the favor of the LORD. Thus says the LORD of hosts: In those days ten men of every nationality, speaking different tongues, shall take hold, yes, take hold of every Jew by the edge of his garment and say, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you."
[ZECH 8:22-23]
Again he left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to
the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people
brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged
him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from
the crowd. He put his finger into the man's ears and, spitting,
touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and
said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Be
opened!") And (immediately) the man's ears were opened, his
speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. [MK 7:31-35]
When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave
birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord
had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her.
When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they
were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother
said in reply, "No. He will be called John." But they
answered her, "There is no one among your relatives who has
this name." So they made signs, asking his father what he
wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote,
"John is his name," and all were amazed. Immediately his
mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God. [LK 1:57-64]
When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the
bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from
the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and
saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out,
'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of
his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment
in these flames.' Abraham replied, 'My child, remember that you
received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise
received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you
are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is
established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go
from our side to yours or from your side to ours.' [LK 16:22-26]
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one
place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like
a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which
they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which
parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different
tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were
devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were
confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, "Are not
all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of
us hear them in his own native language? We are Parthians, Medes,
and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,
Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of
Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and
converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking
in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God." They were all
astounded and bewildered, and said to one another, "What does
this mean?" [ACTS 2:1-12]
But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death,
because it was impossible for him to be held by it. For David says
of him: 'I saw the Lord ever before me, with him at my right hand
I shall not be disturbed. Therefore my heart has been glad and my
tongue has exulted; my flesh, too, will dwell in hope, because you
will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will you suffer
your holy one to see corruption. You have made known to me the
paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' [ACTS 2:24-28]
While Peter was still speaking these things, the Holy Spirit
fell upon all who were listening to the word. The circumcised
believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift
of the Holy Spirit should have been poured out on the Gentiles
also, for they could hear them speaking in tongues and glorifying
God. Then Peter responded, "Can anyone withhold the water for
baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit even as
we have?" He ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus
Christ. [ACTS
10:44-48]
And when Paul laid (his) hands on them, the Holy Spirit came
upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. [ACTS 19:6]
Why then do you judge your brother? Or you, why do you look down on your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written: "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bend before me, and every tongue shall give praise to God."
So (then) each of us shall give an account of himself (to God).
[ROM 14:10-12]
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for
some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of
wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the
same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts
of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds; to another
prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties
of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. But one and the
same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually
to each person as he wishes. [1COR 12:7-11]
Now you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it. Some
people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles;
second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts
of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues.
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work
mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in
tongues? Do all interpret? Strive eagerly for the greatest
spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way. [1COR 12:27-31]
If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I
am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift
of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I
have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am
nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body
over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not
pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its
own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over
injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the
truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
endures all things. Love never fails. If there are prophecies,
they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if
knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. For we know partially
and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, the partial
will pass away. [1COR
13:1-10]
Pursue love, but strive eagerly for the spiritual gifts, above
all that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue does not
speak to human beings but to God, for no one listens; he utters
mysteries in spirit. On the other hand, one who prophesies does
speak to human beings, for their building up, encouragement, and
solace. Whoever speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but whoever
prophesies builds up the church. Now I should like all of you to
speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. One who prophesies is
greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so
that the church may be built up. Now, brothers, if I should come
to you speaking in tongues, what good will I do you if I do not
speak to you by way of revelation, or knowledge, or prophecy, or
instruction? Likewise, if inanimate things that produce sound,
such as flute or harp, do not give out the tones distinctly, how
will what is being played on flute or harp be recognized? And if
the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for
battle? Similarly, if you, because of speaking in tongues, do not
utter intelligible speech, how will anyone know what is being
said? For you will be talking to the air. It happens that there
are many different languages in the world, and none is
meaningless; but if I do not know the meaning of a language, I
shall be a foreigner to one who speaks it, and one who speaks it a
foreigner to me. So with yourselves: since you strive eagerly for
spirits, seek to have an abundance of them for building up the
church. [1COR 14:1-12]
Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray to be able to
interpret. (For) if I pray in a tongue, my spirit is at prayer but
my mind is unproductive. So what is to be done? I will pray with
the spirit, but I will also pray with the mind. I will sing praise
with the spirit, but I will also sing praise with the mind.
Otherwise, if you pronounce a blessing (with) the spirit, how
shall one who holds the place of the uninstructed say the
"Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what
you are saying? For you may be giving thanks very well, but the
other is not built up. I give thanks to God that I speak in
tongues more than any of you, but in the church I would rather
speak five words with my mind, so as to instruct others also, than
ten thousand words in a tongue. Brothers, stop being childish in
your thinking. In respect to evil be like infants, but in your
thinking be mature. It is written in the law: "By people
speaking strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners I will
speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to me, says
the Lord." Thus, tongues are a sign not for those who believe
but for unbelievers, whereas prophecy is not for unbelievers but
for those who believe. So if the whole church meets in one place
and everyone speaks in tongues, and then uninstructed people or
unbelievers should come in, will they not say that you are out of
your minds? But if everyone is prophesying, and an unbeliever or
uninstructed person should come in, he will be convinced by
everyone and judged by everyone, and the secrets of his heart will
be disclosed, and so he will fall down and worship God, declaring,
"God is really in your midst." [1COR
14:13-25]
So what is to be done, brothers? When you assemble, one has a
psalm, another an instruction, a revelation, a tongue, or an
interpretation. Everything should be done for building up. If
anyone speaks in a tongue, let it be two or at most three, and
each in turn, and one should interpret. But if there is no
interpreter, the person should keep silent in the church and speak
to himself and to God. Two or three prophets should speak, and the
others discern. But if a revelation is given to another person
sitting there, the first one should be silent. For you can all
prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged.
Indeed, the spirits of prophets are under the prophets' control,
since he is not the God of disorder but of peace. As in all the
churches of the holy ones, women should keep silent in the
churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but should be
subordinate, as even the law says. But if they want to learn
anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is
improper for a woman to speak in the church. Did the word of God
go forth from you? Or has it come to you alone? If anyone thinks
that he is a prophet or a spiritual person, he should recognize
that what I am writing to you is a commandment of the Lord. If
anyone does not acknowledge this, he is not acknowledged. So, (my)
brothers, strive eagerly to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking
in tongues, but everything must be done properly and in order. [1COR 14:26-40]
Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality
with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found
human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to
death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted
him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at
the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and
on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. [PHIL 2:6-11]
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, his religion is vain. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows
in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
[JMS 1:26-27]
Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you
realize that we will be judged more strictly, for we all fall
short in many respects. If anyone does not fall short in speech,
he is a perfect man, able to bridle his whole body also. If we put
bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we also guide
their whole bodies. It is the same with ships: even though they
are so large and driven by fierce winds, they are steered by a
very small rudder wherever the pilot's inclination wishes. In the
same way the tongue is a small member and yet has great
pretensions. Consider how small a fire can set a huge forest
ablaze. The tongue is also a fire. It exists among our members as
a world of malice, defiling the whole body and setting the entire
course of our lives on fire, itself set on fire by Gehenna. For
every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be
tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no human being
can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse human
beings who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth
come blessing and cursing. This need not be so, my brothers. Does
a spring gush forth from the same opening both pure and brackish
water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, produce olives, or a grapevine
figs? Neither can salt water yield fresh. [JMS 3:1-12]
Finally, all of you, be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward
one another, compassionate, humble. Do not return evil for evil,
or insult for insult; but, on the contrary, a blessing, because to
this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing. For:
"Whoever would love life and see good days must keep the
tongue from evil and the lips from speaking deceit, must turn from
evil and do good, seek peace and follow after it. For the eyes of
the Lord are on the righteous and his ears turned to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against evildoers." [1PT 3:8-12]
They sang a new hymn: "Worthy are you to receive the
scroll and to break open its seals, for you were slain and with
your blood you purchased for God those from every tribe and
tongue, people and nation." [RV 5:9]
After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches
in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice: "Salvation comes from
our God, who is seated on the throne, and from the Lamb." [RV 7:9-10]
So I went up to the angel and told him to give me the small scroll. He said to me, "Take and swallow it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will taste as sweet
as honey." I took the small scroll from the angel's hand and swallowed it. In my mouth it was like sweet honey, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour.
Then someone said to me, "You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and
kings." [RV 10:9-11]
The beast was given a mouth uttering proud boasts and blasphemies, and it was given authority to act for forty-two months.
It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling and those who dwell in heaven. It was also allowed to wage war against the holy ones and conquer them, and it was granted authority over every tribe, people, tongue, and nation. All the inhabitants of the earth will worship it, all whose names were not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life, which belongs to the Lamb who was slain.
[RV 13:5-8]
Then I saw another angel flying high overhead, with everlasting good
news to announce to those who dwell on earth, to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people. He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, for his time has come to sit in judgment. Worship him who made heaven and earth and sea and springs of water."
[RV 14:6-7]
The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast.
Its kingdom was plunged into darkness, and people bit their tongues in pain and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores. But they did not repent of their works.
[RV 16:10-11]
Then he said to me, "The waters that you saw where the
harlot lives represent large numbers of peoples, nations, and
tongues." [RV 17:15]
