"So send one of your number to get your brother, while the rest
of you stay here under arrest. Thus shall your words be tested for
their truth; if they are untrue, as Pharaoh lives, you are
spies!" [GEN 42:16]
And now, Lord GOD, you are God and your words are truth; you
have made this generous promise to your servant. [2SAM 7:28]
But the king answered him, "How many times must I adjure
you to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the
LORD?" [1KGS 22:16]
I, Tobit, have walked all the days of my life on the paths of
truth and righteousness. I performed many charitable works for my
kinsmen and my people who had been deported with me to Nineveh, in
Assyria. [TOBIT 1:3]
"You are righteous, O Lord, and all your deeds are just;
All your ways are mercy and truth; you are the judge of the world."
[TOBIT 3:2]
"Yes, your judgments are many and true in dealing with me
as my sins and those of my fathers deserve. For we have not kept
your commandments, nor have we trodden the paths of truth before
you." [TOBIT 3:5]
Raphael said: "Why? Do you need a tribe and a family? Or are you looking for a hired man to travel with your son?" Tobit replied, "I wish to know truthfully whose son you are, brother, and what your name is."
[TOBIT 5:12]
Tobit exclaimed: "Welcome! God save you, brother! Do not be provoked with me, brother, for wanting to learn the truth about your family. So it turns out that you are a kinsman, and from a noble and good line! I knew Hananiah and Nathaniah, the two sons of Shemaiah the elder; with me they used to make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where we would worship together. No, they did not stray from the right path; your kinsmen are good men. You are certainly of good lineage, and welcome!"
[TOBIT 5:14]
"I will now tell you the whole truth; I will conceal
nothing at all from you. I have already said to you, 'A king's
secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to be made
known with due honor.'" [TOBIT 12:11]
Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites said to him:
"My lord, hear this account from your servant; I will tell
you the truth about this people that lives near you (that inhabits
this mountain region); no lie shall escape your servant's lips." [JDTH
5:5]
Then fear and dread of them came upon all the people, who said:
"There is no truth or justice among them; they violated the
agreement and the oath that they swore." [1MACC 7:18]
In truth, those whom they desired to help to a kingdom became
kings, and those whom they wished to depose they deposed; and they
were greatly exalted. [1MACC 8:13]
Now I beg those who read this book not to be disheartened by
these misfortunes, but to consider that these chastisements were
meant not for the ruin but for the correction of our nation. It
is, in fact, a sign of great kindness to punish sinners promptly
instead of letting them go for long. Thus, in dealing with other
nations, the Lord patiently waits until they reach the full
measure of their sins before he punishes them; but with us he has
decided to deal differently, in order that he may not have to
punish us more severely later, when our sins have reached their
fullness. He never withdraws his mercy from us. Although he
disciplines us with misfortunes, he does not abandon his own
people. Let these words suffice for recalling this truth. [Taken from
2MACC 6:12-17]
Whoever walks without blame, doing what is right, speaking truth from the heart; Who does not slander a neighbor, does no harm to another, never defames a friend; Who disdains the wicked, but honors those who fear the LORD; Who keeps an oath despite the cost, lends no money at interest, accepts no bribe against the innocent.
Whoever acts like this shall never be shaken. [PS 15:2-5]
Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior.
For you I wait all the long day, because of your goodness, LORD.
[PS 25:5]
In the cause of truth and justice may your right hand show you
wondrous deeds. [PS 45:5]
I will listen for the word of God; surely the LORD will proclaim peace
To his people, to the faithful, to those who trust in him. Near indeed is salvation for the loyal; prosperity will fill our land. Love and truth will meet; justice and peace will kiss. Truth will spring from the earth; justice will look down from heaven. The LORD will surely grant abundance; our land will yield its increase. Prosperity will march before the Lord, and good fortune will follow behind.
[PS 85:9-14]
Teach me, LORD, your way that I may walk in your truth,
single-hearted and revering your name. [PS 86:11]
Do not take the word of truth from my mouth, for in your edicts
is my hope. [PS 119:43]
Your word, LORD, stands forever; it is firm as the heavens. Through all generations your truth endures; fixed to stand firm like the earth.
By your edicts they stand firm to this day, for all things are your servants.
[PS 119:89-91]
You, LORD, are near to all who call upon you, to all who call
upon you in truth. [PS 145:18]
Yes, the truth my mouth recounts, but the wickedness my lips
abhor. [PROV 8:7]
He tells the truth who states what he is sure of, but a lying
witness speaks deceitfully. [PROV 12:17]
Truthful lips endure forever, the lying tongue, for only a
moment. [PROV 12:19]
Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who are
truthful are his delight. [PROV 12:22]
A truthful witness does not lie, but a false witness utters
lies. [PROV 14:5]
The truthful witness saves lives, but he who utters lies is a
betrayer. [PROV 14:25]
Get the truth, and sell it not - wisdom, instruction and
understanding. [PROV 23:23]
Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful
shall abide with him in love: Because grace and mercy are with his
holy ones, and his care is with the elect. [WISDOM 3:9]
We, then, have strayed from the way of truth, and the light of
justice did not shine for us, and the sun did not rise for us.
[WISDOM 5:6]
Now what wisdom is, and how she came to be I shall relate; and
I shall hide no secrets from you, But from the very beginning I
shall search out and bring to light knowledge of her, nor shall I
diverge from the truth. [WISDOM 6:22]
Never gainsay the truth, and struggle not against the rushing
stream. [SIRACH 4:25]
Even to the death fight for truth, and the LORD your God will
battle for you. [SIRACH 4:28]
Can the unclean produce the clean? can the liar ever speak the
truth? [SIRACH 34:4]
Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the path
of truth. [SIRACH 37:15]
For Hezekiah did what was right and held fast to the paths of
David, As ordered by the illustrious prophet Isaiah, who saw the
truth in visions. [SIRACH 48:22]
On that day The remnant of Israel, the survivors of the house
of Jacob, will no more lean upon him who struck them; But they
lean upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. [ISA 10:20]
No one brings suit justly, no one pleads truthfully; They trust
in emptiness and tell lies; they conceive mischief and bring forth
malice. [ISA 59:4]
Right is repelled, and justice stands far off; For truth
stumbles in the public square, uprightness cannot enter. [ISA
59:14]
By which he will be blessed on whom a blessing is invoked in
the land; He who takes an oath in the land shall swear by the God
of truth; For the hardships of the past shall be forgotten, and
hidden from my eyes. [ISA 65:16]
If you wish to return, O Israel, says the LORD, return to me.
If you put your detestable things out of my sight, and do not stray, Then you can swear, "As the LORD lives," in truth, in judgment, and in justice;
Then shall the nations use his name in blessing, and glory in him.
[JER 4:1-2]
Would that I had in the desert a travelers' lodge! That I might
leave my people and depart from them. They are all adulterers, a
faithless band. They ready their tongues like a drawn bow; with
lying, and not with truth, they hold forth in the land. They go
from evil to evil, but me they know not, says the LORD. Be on your
guard, everyone against his neighbor; put no trust in any brother.
Every brother apes Jacob, the supplanter, every friend is guilty
of slander. Each one deceives the other, no one speaks the truth.
They have accustomed their tongues to lying, and are perverse, and
cannot repent. [JER 9:1-4]
Let the prophet who has a dream recount his dream; let him who
has my word speak my word truthfully! What has straw to do with
the wheat? says the LORD. [JER 23:28]
"But mark well: if you put me to death, it is innocent blood you
bring on yourselves, on this city and its citizens. For in truth
it was the LORD who sent me to you, to speak all these things for
you to hear." [JER 26:15]
Only the father, since he violated rights, and robbed, and did
what was not good among his people, shall in truth die for his
sins. [EZEK 18:18]
After this first vision, I, Daniel, had another, in the third
year of the reign of King Belshazzar. In my vision I saw myself in
the fortress of Susa in the province of Elam; I was beside the
river Ulai. I looked up and saw standing by the river a ram with
two great horns, the one larger and newer than the other. I saw
the ram butting toward the west, north, and south. No beast could
withstand it or be rescued from its power; it did what it pleased
and became very powerful. As I was reflecting, a he-goat with a
prominent horn on its forehead suddenly came from the west across
the whole earth without touching the ground. It approached the
two-horned ram I had seen standing by the river, and rushed toward
it with savage force. The he-goat became very powerful, but at the
height of its power the great horn was shattered, and in its place
came up four others, facing the four winds of heaven. Out of one
of them came a little horn which kept growing toward the south,
the east, and the glorious country. Its power extended to the host
of heaven, so that it cast down to earth some of the host and some
of the stars and trampled on them. It boasted even against the
prince of the host... It cast truth to the ground, and was
succeeding in its undertaking. [Taken from DAN 8:1-6,8-12]
The one who looked like a man touched me again and strengthened
me, saying, "Fear not, beloved, you are safe; take courage
and be strong." When he spoke to me, I grew strong and said,
"Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me." "Do
you know," he asked, "why I have come to you? Soon I
must fight the prince of Persia again. When I leave, the prince of
Greece will come; but I shall tell you what is written in the
truthful book. No one supports me against all these except
Michael, your prince" [Taken from DAN 10:18-21]
Woe to those who turn judgment to wormwood and cast justice to the ground! They hate him who reproves at the gate and abhor him who speaks the truth.
[AMOS 5:7,10]
These then are the things you should do: Speak the truth to one another; let there be honesty and peace in the judgments at your gates, and let none of you plot evil against another in his heart, nor love a false oath. For all these things I hate, says the LORD.
[ZECH 8:16-17]
My covenant with him was one of life and peace; fear I put in
him, and he feared me, and stood in awe of my name. True doctrine
was in his mouth, and no dishonesty was found upon his lips; He
walked with me in integrity and in uprightness, and turned many
away from evil. For the lips of the priest are to keep knowledge,
and instruction is to be sought from his mouth, because he is the
messenger of the LORD of hosts. But you have turned aside from the
way, and have caused many to falter by your instruction; You have
made void the covenant of Levi, says the LORD of hosts. [MAL
2:5-8]
Then the Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap
him in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the
Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful
man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the
truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do
not regard a person's status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion:
Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" [MT
22:15-17]
There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years.
She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had
spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew
worse. She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the
crowd and touched his cloak. She said, "If I but touch his
clothes, I shall be cured." Immediately her flow of blood
dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her
affliction. Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him,
turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who has touched my
clothes?" But his disciples said to him, "You see how
the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, 'Who touched
me?'" And he looked around to see who had done it. The woman,
realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and
trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole
truth. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you.
Go in peace and be cured of your affliction." [MK 5:25-34]
They came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are
a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone's
opinion. You do not regard a person's status but teach the way of
God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census
tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?"
[MK 12:14]
They watched him closely and sent agents pretending to be righteous who were to trap him in speech, in order to hand him over to the authority and power of the governor. They posed this question to him, "Teacher, we know that what you say and teach is correct, and you show no partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful for us to pay tribute to Caesar or
not?" [LK 20:20-22]
And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and
we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of
grace and truth. John testified to him and cried out, saying,
"This was he of whom I said, 'The one who is coming after me
ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.'" From his
fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, because
while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came
through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God,
who is at the Father's side, has revealed him. [JN 1:14-18]
And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.
[JN 3:19-21]
Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth;
and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth."
[JN 4:21-24]
[Jesus said,] "If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony
cannot be verified. But there is another who testifies on my
behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is
true. You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth.
I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so
that you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and for
a while you were content to rejoice in his light. But I have
testimony greater than John's. The works that the Father gave me
to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf
that the Father has sent me. Moreover, the Father who sent me has
testified on my behalf. But you have never heard his voice nor
seen his form, and you do not have his word remaining in you,
because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent. You search
the scriptures, because you think you have eternal life through
them; even they testify on my behalf. But you do not want to come
to me to have life." [Taken from JN 5:31-40]
Whoever speaks on his own seeks his own glory, but whoever
seeks the glory of the one who sent him is truthful, and there is
no wrong in him. [JN 7:18]
Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, "If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
[JN 8:31-32]
"I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are
trying to kill me, because my word has no room among you. I tell
you what I have seen in the Father's presence; then do what you
have heard from the Father." They answered and said to him,
"Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If
you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of
Abraham. But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you
the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this. You are
doing the works of your father!" (So) they said to him,
"We are not illegitimate. We have one Father, God."
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love
me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but
he sent me. Why do you not understand what I am saying? Because
you cannot bear to hear my word. You belong to your father the
devil and you willingly carry out your father's desires. He was a
murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth, because
there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in
character, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But
because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. Can any of you
charge me with sin? If I am telling the truth, why do you not
believe me? Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God; for
this reason you do not listen, because you do not belong to
God." [JN 8:37-47]
Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father.
From now on you do know him and have seen him." [JN 14:6-7]
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate
to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to
you." [JN 14:15-18]
"When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.
And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning."
[JN 15:26-27]
But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For
if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I
will send him to you. [JN 16:7]
[Jesus said,] "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming."
[Taken from JN 16:12-13]
[Jesus said,] "Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth."
[Taken from JN 17:17-19]
So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus
answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for
this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who
belongs to the truth listens to my voice." Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said
this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them, "I find
no guilt in him." [JN 18:37-38]
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,
they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into
his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An
eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that
he is speaking the truth, so that you also may (come to) believe.
For this happened so that the scripture passage might be
fulfilled: "Not a bone of it will be broken." And again
another passage says: "They will look upon him whom they have
pierced." [JN 19:33-37]
Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, "In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him."
[ACTS 10:34-35]
I know that after my departure savage wolves will come among you, and they will not spare the flock. And from your own group, men will come forward perverting the truth to draw the disciples away after them.
[ACTS 20:29-30]
Some in the mob shouted one thing, others something else; so,
since he was unable to ascertain the truth because of the uproar,
he ordered Paul to be brought into the compound. [ACTS 21:34]
The next day, wishing to determine the truth about why he was
being accused by the Jews, he freed him and ordered the chief
priests and the whole Sanhedrin to convene. Then he brought Paul
down and made him stand before them. [ACTS 22:30]
While Paul was so speaking in his defense, Festus said in a loud voice, "You are mad, Paul; much learning is driving you mad." But Paul replied, "I am not mad, most excellent Festus; I am speaking words of truth and reason. The king knows about these matters and to him I speak boldly, for I cannot believe that (any) of this has escaped his notice; this was not done in a
corner." [ACTS 26:24-26]
The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against
every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by
their wickedness. [ROM 1:18]
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions.
[Taken from ROM 1:25-26]
By your stubbornness and impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God, who will repay everyone according to his
works: eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works, but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey wickedness.
[ROM 2:5-8]
Now if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast of God
and know his will and are able to discern what is important since you are instructed from the law, and if you are confident that you are a guide for the blind and a light for those in darkness, that you are a trainer of the foolish and teacher of the simple, because in the law you have the formulation of knowledge and
truth - then you who teach another, are you failing to teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?
[ROM 2:17-21]
But if our wickedness provides proof of God's righteousness, what can we say? Is God unjust, humanly speaking, to inflict his wrath?
Of course not! For how else is God to judge the world? But if God's truth redounds to his glory through my falsehood, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not
say - as we are accused and as some claim we say - that we should do evil that good may come of it? Their penalty is what they deserve.
[ROM 3:5-8]
I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the
Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and separated from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kin according to the flesh.
[ROM 9:1-3]
For I say that Christ became a minister of the circumcised to
show God's truthfulness, to confirm the promises to the
patriarchs, but so that the Gentiles might glorify God for his
mercy. As it is written: "Therefore, I will praise you among
the Gentiles and sing praises to your name." And again it
says: "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people." And again:
"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples
praise him." And again Isaiah says: "The root of Jesse
shall come, raised up to rule the Gentiles; in him shall the
Gentiles hope." [ROM 15:8-12]
Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast,
the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread
of sincerity and truth. [1COR 5:8]
Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.
[1COR 13:4-6]
Rather, we have renounced shameful, hidden things; not acting
deceitfully or falsifying the word of God, but by the open
declaration of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone's
conscience in the sight of God. [2COR 4:2]
We cause no one to stumble in anything, in order that no fault
may be found with our ministry; on the contrary, in everything we
commend ourselves as ministers of God, through much endurance, in
afflictions, hardships, constraints, beatings, imprisonments,
riots, labors, vigils, fasts; by purity, knowledge, patience,
kindness, in a holy spirit, in unfeigned love, in truthful speech,
in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness at the right
and at the left; through glory and dishonor, insult and praise. We
are treated as deceivers and yet are truthful; as unrecognized and
yet acknowledged; as dying and behold we live; as chastised and
yet not put to death; as sorrowful yet always rejoicing; as poor
yet enriching many; as having nothing and yet possessing all
things. [2COR 6:3-10]
For if I have boasted to him about you, I was not put to shame.
No, just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting
before Titus proved to be the truth. [2COR 7:14]
By the truth of Christ in me, this boast of mine shall not be
silenced in the regions of Achaia. [2COR 11:10]
Although if I should wish to boast, I would not be foolish, for I would be telling the truth. But I refrain, so that no one may think more of me than what he sees in me or hears from me because of the abundance of the revelations. Therefore, that I might not become too elated,
a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times
I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to
me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness." I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me.
[2COR 12:6-9]
For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the
truth. [2COR 13:8]
Moreover, not even Titus, who was with me, although he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised, but because of the false brothers
secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy on our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, that they might enslave
us - to them we did not submit even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel
might remain intact for you. [GAL 2:3-5]
But when I saw that they were not on the right road in line
with the truth of the gospel, I said to Kephas in front of all,
"If you, though a Jew, are living like a Gentile and not like
a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?"
[GAL 2:14] [Note: This action of Paul's does not contradict
papal infallibility. Peter's teachings on faith and morals are
infallible, but out of human weaknesses, Peter was not observing
his own teachings. Papal infallibility covers only teachings
on faith and morals in certain circumstances - it does not mean
that all the pope's personal actions are infallible.]
So now have I become your enemy by telling you the truth? [GAL
4:16]
You were running well; who hindered you from following (the) truth?
That enticement does not come from the one who called you. A little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough.
[GAL 5:7-9]
In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed
with the promised Holy Spirit, which is the first installment of our inheritance toward redemption as God's possession, to the praise of his glory.
[EPH 1:13-14]
And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as
evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy
ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son
of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of
Christ, so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and
swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery,
from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming. Rather,
living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who
is the head, Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held
together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning
of each part, brings about the body's growth and builds itself up
in love. [EPH 4:11-16]
So I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer
live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; darkened
in understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their
ignorance, because of their hardness of heart, they have become
callous and have handed themselves over to licentiousness for the
practice of every kind of impurity to excess. That is not how you
learned Christ, assuming that you have heard of him and were
taught in him, as truth is in Jesus, that you should put away the
old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful
desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on
the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness
of truth. [EPH 4:17-24]
Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to
his neighbor, for we are members one of another. [EPH 4:25]
Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of
these things the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient. So
do not be associated with them. For you were once darkness, but
now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for
light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.
Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the
fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is
shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but
everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything
that becomes visible is light. [Taken from EPH 5:6-14]
Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty
power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand
firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not
with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers,
with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil
spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that
you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done
everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins
girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and
your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all
circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming
arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the
sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. [EPH 6:10-17]
Of course, some preach Christ from envy and rivalry, others
from good will. The latter act out of love, aware that I am here
for the defense of the gospel; the former proclaim Christ out of
selfish ambition, not from pure motives, thinking that they will
cause me trouble in my imprisonment. What difference does it make,
as long as in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ
is being proclaimed? And in that I rejoice. Indeed I shall
continue to rejoice, for I know that this will result in
deliverance for me through your prayers and support from the
Spirit of Jesus Christ. My eager expectation and hope is that I
shall not be put to shame in any way, but that with all boldness,
now as always, Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by
life or by death. [PHIL 1:15-20]
We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, when we pray for you, for we have heard of your faith in
Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the holy ones
because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. Of this you have
already heard through the word of truth, the gospel, that has come
to you. Just as in the whole world it is bearing fruit and
growing, so also among you, from the day you heard it and came to
know the grace of God in truth, as you learned it from Epaphras
our beloved fellow slave, who is a trustworthy minister of Christ
on your behalf and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. [COL
1:3-8]
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one
who restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is
removed from the scene. And then the lawless one will be revealed,
whom the Lord (Jesus) will kill with the breath of his mouth and
render powerless by the manifestation of his coming, the one whose
coming springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in
signs and wonders that lie, and in every wicked deceit for those
who are perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth
so that they may be saved. Therefore, God is sending them a
deceiving power so that they may believe the lie, that all who
have not believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be
condemned. But we ought to give thanks to God for you always,
brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the
firstfruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and
belief in truth. To this end he has (also) called you through our
gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore,
brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were
taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours. May
our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us
and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his
grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good
deed and word. [2THES 2:7-17]
First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.
[1TM 2:1-4]
For this I was appointed preacher and apostle (I am speaking
the truth, I am not lying), teacher of the Gentiles in faith and
truth. [1TM 2:7]
I am writing you about these matters, although I hope to visit you soon. But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.
[1TM 3:14-15]
Whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the religious teaching is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid disposition for arguments and verbal disputes. From these come envy, rivalry, insults, evil suspicions, and mutual friction among people with corrupted minds, who are deprived of the truth, supposing religion to be a means of gain.
[1TM 6:3-5]
Be eager to present yourself as acceptable to God, a workman
who causes no disgrace, imparting the word of truth without
deviation. Avoid profane, idle talk, for such people will become
more and more godless, and their teaching will spread like
gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have deviated
from the truth by saying that (the) resurrection has already taken
place and are upsetting the faith of some. Nevertheless, God's
solid foundation stands, bearing this inscription, "The Lord
knows those who are his"; and, "Let everyone who calls
upon the name of the Lord avoid evil." [2TM 2:15-19]
Avoid foolish and ignorant debates, for you know that they breed quarrels. A slave of the Lord should not quarrel, but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant, correcting opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant them repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth, and that they may return to their senses out of the devil's snare, where they are entrapped by him, for his will.
[2TM 2:23-26]
But understand this: there will be terrifying times in the last
days. People will be self-centered and lovers of money, proud,
haughty, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful,
irreligious, callous, implacable, slanderous, licentious, brutal,
hating what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of
pleasure rather than lovers of God, as they make a pretense of
religion but deny its power. Reject them. For some of these slip
into homes and make captives of women weighed down by sins, led by
various desires, always trying to learn but never able to reach a
knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses,
so they also oppose the truth - people of depraved mind,
unqualified in the faith. But they will not make further progress,
for their foolishness will be plain to all, as it was with those
two. [2TM 3:1-9]
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who
will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his
kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is
convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through
all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will
not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and
insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop
listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. But you, be
self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform
the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry. [2TM 4:1-5]
Paul, a slave of God and apostle of Jesus Christ for the sake
of the faith of God's chosen ones and the recognition of religious
truth, in the hope of eternal life that God, who does not lie,
promised before time began, who indeed at the proper time revealed
his word in the proclamation with which I was entrusted by the
command of God our savior, to Titus, my true child in our common
faith: grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our
savior. [TI 1:1-4]
For there are also many rebels, idle talkers and deceivers...
It is imperative to silence them, as they are upsetting whole
families by teaching for sordid gain what they should not. One of
them, a prophet of their own, once said, "Cretans have always
been liars, vicious beasts, and lazy gluttons." That
testimony is true. Therefore, admonish them sharply, so that they
may be sound in the faith, instead of paying attention to Jewish
myths and regulations of people who have repudiated the truth. [Taken
from TI 1:10-14]
If we sin deliberately after receiving knowledge of the truth,
there no longer remains sacrifice for sins but a fearful prospect
of judgment and a flaming fire that is going to consume the
adversaries. Anyone who rejects the law of Moses is put to death
without pity on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Do you
not think that a much worse punishment is due the one who has
contempt for the Son of God, considers unclean the covenant-blood
by which he was consecrated, and insults the spirit of grace? We
know the one who said: "Vengeance is mine; I will
repay," and again: "The Lord will judge his
people." It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the
living God. [HEB 10:26-31]
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers: all good giving and every perfect gift
is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change. He willed to give us birth by the word of truth that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his
creatures. [JMS 1:16-18]
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works
by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you
have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not
boast and be false to the truth. Wisdom of this kind does not come
down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where
jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every
foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure,
then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits,
without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness
is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. [JMS 3:13-18]
My brothers, if anyone among you should stray from the truth and someone bring him back, he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of
sins. [JMS 5:19-20]
Since you have purified yourselves by obedience to the truth
for sincere mutual love, love one another intensely from a (pure)
heart. [1PT 1:22]
Therefore, I will always remind you of these things, even
though you already know them and are established in the truth you
have. I think it right, as long as I am in this "tent,"
to stir you up by a reminder, since I know that I will soon have
to put it aside, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me. I
shall also make every effort to enable you always to remember
these things after my departure. We did not follow cleverly
devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of
our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his
majesty. [2PT 1:12-16]
There were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will introduce destructive heresies and even deny the Master who ransomed them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their licentious ways, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled.
[2PT 2:1-2]
Now this is the message that we have heard from him and
proclaim to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at
all. If we say, "We have fellowship with him," while we
continue to walk in darkness, we lie and do not act in truth. But
if we walk in the light as he is in the light, then we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of his Son Jesus
cleanses us from all sin. If we say, "We are without
sin," we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we
acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our
sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing. If we say, "We
have not sinned," we make him a liar, and his word is not in
us. [1JN 1:5-10]
The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments. Whoever says, "I know him," but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected
in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: whoever claims to abide in him ought to live (just) as he lived.
[1JN 2:3-6]
Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that the
antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus
we know this is the last hour. They went out from us, but they
were not really of our number; if they had been, they would have
remained with us. Their desertion shows that none of them was of
our number. But you have the anointing that comes from the holy
one, and you all have knowledge. I write to you not because you do
not know the truth but because you do, and because every lie is
alien to the truth. Who is the liar? Whoever denies that Jesus is
the Christ. Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the
antichrist. No one who denies the Son has the Father, but whoever
confesses the Son has the Father as well. Let what you heard from
the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning
remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father.
And this is the promise that he made us: eternal life. I write you
these things about those who would deceive you. As for you, the
anointing that you received from him remains in you, so that you
do not need anyone to teach you. But his anointing teaches you
about everything and is true and not false; just as it taught you,
remain in him. [1JN 2:18-27]
We know that we have passed from death to life because we love
our brothers. Whoever does not love remains in death. Everyone who
hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has
eternal life remaining in him. The way we came to know love was
that he laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our
lives for our brothers. If someone who has worldly means sees a
brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of
God remain in him? Children, let us love not in word or speech but
in deed and truth. (Now) this is how we shall know that we belong
to the truth and reassure our hearts before him in whatever our
hearts condemn, for God is greater than our hearts and knows
everything. Beloved, if (our) hearts do not condemn us, we have
confidence in God and receive from him whatever we ask, because we
keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And his commandment
is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ,
and love one another just as he commanded us. Those who keep his
commandments remain in him, and he in them, and the way we know
that he remains in us is from the Spirit that he gave us. [1JN 3:14-24]
Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see
whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone
out into the world. This is how you can know the Spirit of God:
every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh belongs to God, and every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus
does not belong to God. This is the spirit of the antichrist that,
as you heard, is to come, but in fact is already in the world. You
belong to God, children, and you have conquered them, for the one
who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They
belong to the world; accordingly, their teaching belongs to the
world, and the world listens to them. We belong to God, and anyone
who knows God listens to us, while anyone who does not belong to
God refuses to hear us. This is how we know the spirit of truth
and the spirit of deceit. [1JN 4:1-6]
For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And
his commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is begotten by
God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is
our faith. Who (indeed) is the victor over the world but the one
who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who
came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone,
but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and
the Spirit is truth. So there are three that testify, the Spirit,
the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord. If we
accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater.
Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf
of his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony
within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar
by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son. And
this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is
in his Son. Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not
possess the Son of God does not have life. [1JN 5:3-12]
The Presbyter to the chosen Lady and to her children whom I love in
truth - and not only I but also all who know the truth - because of the truth that dwells in us and will be with us forever.
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son in truth and love.
I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth just as we were commanded by the Father.
[2JN 1:1-4]
The Presbyter to the beloved Gaius whom I love in truth. Beloved, I hope you are prospering in every respect and are in good health, just as your soul is prospering. I rejoiced greatly when some of the brothers
came and testified to how truly you walk in the truth. Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
[3JN 1:1-4]
Beloved, you are faithful in all you do for the brothers, especially for strangers; they have testified to your love before the church. Please help them in a way worthy of God to continue their
journey. For they have set out for the sake of the Name and are accepting nothing from the pagans. Therefore, we ought to support such persons, so that we may be co-workers in the truth.
[3JN 1:5-8]
Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does what is good is of God; whoever does what is evil has never seen God.
Demetrius receives a good report from all, even from the truth itself. We give our testimonial as well, and you know our testimony is true.
