"Then I bowed down
in worship to the LORD, blessing the LORD, the God of my master
Abraham, who had led me on the right road to obtain the daughter
of my master's kinsman for his son. If, therefore, you have in
mind to show true loyalty to my master, let me know; but if not,
let me know that, too. I can then proceed accordingly." Laban
and his household said in reply: "This thing comes from the
LORD; we can say nothing to you either for or against it. Here is
Rebekah, ready for you; take her with you, that she may become the
wife of your master's son, as the LORD has said." When
Abraham's servant heard their answer, he bowed to the ground
before the LORD. [Taken from GEN 24:48-52]
"What should I pay you?" Laban asked.
Jacob answered: "You do not have to pay me anything outright.
I will again pasture and tend your flock, if you do this one thing
for me: go through your whole flock today and remove from it every
dark animal among the sheep and every spotted or speckled one
among the goats. Only such animals shall be my wages. In the
future, whenever you check on these wages of mine, let my honesty
testify against me: any animal in my possession that is not a
speckled or spotted goat, or a dark sheep, got there by
theft!" [GEN 30:31-33]
When Joseph recognized his brothers, although
they did not recognize him, he was reminded of the dreams he had
about them. He said to them: "You are spies. You have come to
see the nakedness of the land." "No, my lord," they
replied. "On the contrary, your servants have come to procure
food. All of us are sons of the same man. We are honest men; your
servants have never been spies." But he answered them:
"Not so! You have come to see the nakedness of the
land." "We your servants," they said, "were
twelve brothers, sons of a certain man in Canaan; but the youngest
one is at present with our father, and the other one is
gone." "It is just as I said," Joseph persisted;
"you are spies. This is how you shall be tested: unless your
youngest brother comes here, I swear by the life of Pharaoh that
you shall not leave here. So send one of your number to get your
brother, while the rest of you stay here under arrest. Thus shall
your words be tested for their truth; if they are untrue, as
Pharaoh lives, you are spies!" With that, he locked them up
in the guardhouse for three days. On the third day Joseph said to
them: "Do this, and you shall live; for I am a God-fearing
man. If you have been honest, only one of your brothers need be
confined in this prison, while the rest of you may go and take
home provisions for your starving families. But you must come back
to me with your youngest brother. Your words will thus be
verified, and you will not die." To this they agreed. To one
another, however, they said: "Alas, we are being punished
because of our brother. We saw the anguish of his heart when he
pleaded with us, yet we paid no heed; that is why this anguish has
now come upon us." "Didn't I tell you," broke in
Reuben, "not to do wrong to the boy? But you wouldn't listen!
Now comes the reckoning for his blood." They did not know, of
course, that Joseph understood what they said, since he spoke with
them through an interpreter. But turning away from them, he wept.
When he was able to speak to them again, he had Simeon taken from
them and bound before their eyes. [GEN 42:8-24]
"Do not act dishonestly in using measures of length or weight or capacity. You shall have a true scale and true weights, an honest ephah and an honest hin. I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt."
[LEV 19:35-36]
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Assemble for me seventy of the elders of Israel, men you know for true elders and authorities among the people, and bring them to the meeting tent. When they are in place beside you, I will come down and speak with you there. I will also take some of the spirit that is on you and will bestow it on them, that they may share the burden of the people with you. You will then not have to bear it by yourself."

Balaam, however, perceiving that the LORD was
pleased to bless Israel, did not go aside as before to seek omens,
but turned his gaze toward the desert. When he raised his eyes and
saw Israel encamped, tribe by tribe, the spirit of God came upon
him, and he gave voice to his oracle: The utterance of Balaam, son
of Beor, the utterance of the man whose eye is true, The utterance
of one who hears what God says, and knows what the Most High
knows, Of one who sees what the Almighty sees, enraptured, and
with eyes unveiled: How goodly are your tents, O Jacob; your
encampments, O Israel! They are like gardens beside a stream, like
the cedars planted by the LORD. [Taken from NUM 24:1-6]
I charged your judges at that time, 'Listen to
complaints among your kinsmen, and administer true justice to both
parties even if one of them is an alien. In rendering judgment, do
not consider who a person is; give ear to the lowly and to the
great alike, fearing no man, for judgment is God's. Refer to me
any case that is too hard for you and I will hear it.' [DEUT 1:16-17]
"If, in any of the cities which the LORD,
your God, gives you to dwell in, you hear it said that certain
scoundrels have sprung up among you and have led astray the
inhabitants of their city to serve other gods whom you have not
known, you must inquire carefully into the matter and investigate
it thoroughly. If you find that it is true and an established fact
that this abomination has been committed in your midst, you shall
[inflict the prescribed actions]" [Taken from DEUT 13:13-16] [Note:
Under Mosaic law, the requirement for this situation was the
dooming of all life.]
"You shall appoint judges and officials
throughout your tribes to administer true justice for the people
in all the communities which the LORD, your God, is giving you.
You shall not distort justice; you must be impartial. You shall
not take a bribe; for a bribe blinds the eyes even of the wise and
twists the words even of the just. Justice and justice alone shall
be your aim, that you may have life and may possess the land which
the LORD, your God, is giving you." [DEUT 16:18-20]
"If there is found among you, in any one of
the communities which the LORD, your God, gives you, a man or a
woman who does evil in the sight of the LORD, your God, and
transgresses his covenant, by serving other gods, or by worshiping
the sun or the moon or any of the host of the sky, against my
command; and if, on being informed of it, you find by careful
investigation that it is true and an established fact that this
abomination has been committed in Israel: you shall [apply the
prescribed penalty]" [Taken from DEUT
17:2-5] [Note: Under Mosaic law, capital punishment was applied
in such cases.]
"But if this charge is true, and evidence of the girl's virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her father's house and there her townsmen shall
[apply the prescribed punishment], because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father's house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst."
[Taken from DEUT 22:20-21] [Note: Under Mosaic
law, capital punishment was applied in such cases.]
"You shall not keep two differing weights
in your bag, one large and the other small; nor shall you keep two
different measures in your house, one large and the other small.
But use a true and just weight, and a true and just measure, that
you may have a long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is
giving you. Everyone who is dishonest in any of these matters is
an abomination to the LORD, your God." [DEUT 25:13-16]
"Give me, therefore, this mountain region which
the LORD promised me that day, as you yourself heard. True, the
Anakim are there, with large fortified cities, but if the LORD is
with me I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD
promised." [Taken from JOSH 14:12]
God heard the prayer of Manoah, and the angel of
God came again to the woman as she was sitting in the field. Since
her husband Manoah was not with her, the woman ran in haste and
told her husband. "The man who came to me the other day has
appeared to me," she said to him; so Manoah got up and
followed his wife. When he reached the man, he said to him,
"Are you the one who spoke to my wife?" "Yes,"
he answered. Then Manoah asked, "Now, when that which you say
comes true, what are we expected to do for the boy?" The
angel of the LORD answered Manoah, "Your wife is to abstain
from all the things of which I spoke to her. She must not eat
anything that comes from the vine, nor take wine or strong drink,
nor eat anything unclean. Let her observe all that I have
commanded her." [JUDG 13:9-14]
Manoah said to him, "What is your name, that we may honor you when your words come true?"
The angel of the LORD answered him, "Why do you ask my name, which is mysterious?"
[JUDG 13:17-18]
The servant replied, "Listen! There is a
man of God in this city, a man held in high esteem; all that he
says is sure to come true. Let us go there now! Perhaps he can
tell us how to accomplish our errand." [1SAM 9:6]
"Do not fear," Samuel answered them.
"It is true you have committed all this evil; still, you must
not turn from the LORD, but must worship him with your whole
heart. Do not turn to meaningless idols which can neither profit
nor save; they are nothing. For the sake of his own great name the
LORD will not abandon his people, since the LORD himself chose to
make you his people. As for me, far be it from me to sin against
the LORD by ceasing to pray for you and to teach you the good and
right way. But you must fear the LORD and worship him faithfully
with your whole heart; keep in mind the great things he has done
among you. If instead you continue to do evil, both you and your
king shall perish." [1SAM 12:20-25]
So Achish summoned David and said to him:
"As the LORD lives, you are honest, and I should be pleased
to have you active with me in the camp, for I have found nothing
wrong with you from the day of your arrival to this day. But you
are not welcome to the lords. Withdraw peaceably, now, and do
nothing that might displease the Philistine lords." But David
said to Achish: "What have I done? Or what have you against
your servant from the first day I have been with you to this day,
that I cannot go to fight against the enemies of my lord the
king?" "You know," Achish answered David,
"that you are acceptable to me. But the Philistine chiefs
have determined you are not to go up with us to battle. So the
first thing tomorrow, you and your lord's servants who came with
you, go to the place I picked out for you. Do not decide to take
umbrage at this; you are as acceptable to me as an angel of God.
But make an early morning start, as soon as it grows light, and be
on your way." So David and his men left early in the morning
to return to the land of the Philistines. The Philistines,
however, went on up to Jezreel. [1SAM 29:6-11]
"The report I heard in my country about
your deeds and your wisdom is true," [the queen of Sheba]
told the king. "Though I did not believe the report until I
came and saw with my own eyes, I have discovered that they were
not telling me the half. Your wisdom and prosperity surpass the
report I heard. Happy are your men, happy these servants of yours,
who stand before you always and listen to your wisdom. Blessed be
the LORD, your God, whom it has pleased to place you on the throne
of Israel. In his enduring love for Israel, the LORD has made you
king to carry out judgment and justice." [Taken from 1KGS
10:6-9]
These were David's chief warriors who, together
with all Israel, supported him in his reign in order to make him
true king, even as the LORD had commanded concerning Israel.
[1CHRON 11:10]
Upon Azariah, son of Oded, came the spirit of
God. He went forth to meet Asa and said to him: "Hear me, Asa
and all Judah and Benjamin! The LORD is with you when you are with
him, and if you seek him he will be present to you; but if you
abandon him, he will abandon you. For a long time Israel had no
true God, no priest-teacher and no law, but when in their distress
they turned to the LORD, the God of Israel, and sought him, he was
present to them. In that former time there was no peace for anyone
to go or come, but there were many terrors upon the inhabitants of
the lands. Nation crushed nation and city crushed city, for God
destroyed them by every kind of adversity. But as for you, be
strong and do not relax, for your work shall be rewarded." [2CHRON
15:1-7]
"Yes, your judgments are many and true in
dealing with me as my sins and those of my fathers deserve. For we
have not kept your commandments, nor have we trodden the paths of
truth before you." [Taken from TOBIT 3:5]
All the nations of the world shall be converted
and shall offer God true worship; all shall abandon their idols
which have deceitfully led them into error, and shall bless the
God of the ages in righteousness. Because all the Israelites who
are to be saved in those days will truly be mindful of God, they
shall be gathered together and go to Jerusalem; in security shall
they dwell forever in the land of Abraham, which will be given
over to them. Those who sincerely love God shall rejoice, but
those who become guilty of sin shall completely disappear from the
land. [Taken from TOBIT 14:6-7]
So then, my lord and master, do not disregard
his word, but bear it in mind, for it is true. For our people are
not punished, nor does the sword prevail against them, except when
they sin against their God. [Taken from JDTH 11:10]
"The Jewish people and their priest have,
therefore, made the following decisions. Simon shall be their
permanent leader and high priest until a true prophet arises. He
shall act as governor general over them, and shall have charge of
the temple, to make regulations concerning its functions and
concerning the country, its weapons and strongholds, he shall be
obeyed by all. All contracts made in the country shall be dated by
his name. He shall have the right to wear royal purple and gold
ornaments. It shall not be lawful for any of the people or priests
to nullify any of these decisions, or to contradict the orders
given by him, or to convene an assembly in the country without his
consent, to be clothed in royal purple or wear an official gold
brooch. Whoever acts otherwise or violates any of these
prescriptions shall be liable to punishment." [Taken from
1MACC 14:41-45]
The Jews in Jerusalem and in the land of Judea
send greetings to their brethren, the Jews in Egypt, and wish them
true peace! [2MACC 1:1]
When Apollonius had an audience with the king,
he informed him about the riches that had been reported to him.
The king chose his minister Heliodorus and sent him with
instructions to expropriate the aforesaid wealth. So Heliodorus
immediately set out on his journey, ostensibly to visit the cities
of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, but in reality to carry out the
king's purpose. When he arrived in Jerusalem and had been
graciously received by the high priest of the city, he told him
about the information that had been given, and explained the
reason for his presence, and he asked if these things were really
true. The high priest explained that part of the money was a care
fund for widows and orphans, and a part was the property of
Hyrcanus, son of Tobias, a man who occupied a very high position.
Contrary to the calumnies of the impious Simon, the total amounted
to four hundred talents of silver and two hundred of gold. He
added that it was utterly unthinkable to defraud those who had
placed their trust in the sanctity of the Place and in the sacred
inviolability of a temple venerated all over the world. But
because of the orders he had from the king, Heliodorus said that
in any case the money must be confiscated for the royal treasury.
So on the day he had set he went in to take an inventory of the
funds. There was great distress throughout the city. [2MACC 3:7-14]
How agreeable are honest words; yet how
unconvincing is your argument! [JOB 6:25]
I wore my honesty like a garment; justice was my
robe and my turban. [JOB 29:14]
A shield before me is God who saves the
honest heart. [PS 7:11]
The LORD acknowledged my righteousness, rewarded
my clean hands. For I kept the ways of the LORD; I was not
disloyal to my God. His laws were all before me, his decrees I did
not cast aside. I was honest toward him; I was on guard against
sin. So the LORD rewarded my righteousness, the cleanness of my
hands in his sight. Toward the faithful you are faithful; to the
honest you are honest; Toward the sincere, sincere; but to the
perverse you are devious. [PS 18:21-27]
God's way is unerring; the LORD'S promise is
tried and true; he is a shield for all who trust in him. [PS
18:31]
The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the
soul. The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the
simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart.
The command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye. The fear
of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The statutes of the LORD
are true, all of them just; More desirable than gold, than a hoard
of purest gold, Sweeter also than honey or drippings from the
comb. By them your servant is instructed; obeying them brings much
reward. [PS 19:8-12]
See how many are my enemies, see how fiercely
they hate me. Preserve my life and rescue me; do not let me be
disgraced, for I trust in you. Let honesty and virtue preserve me;
I wait for you, O LORD. [Taken from PS 25:19-21]
Sing to God a new song; skillfully play with
joyful chant. For the LORD'S word is true; all his works are
trustworthy. The LORD loves justice and right and fills the earth
with goodness. [Taken from PS 33:3-5]
How precious is your love, O God! We take refuge
in the shadow of your wings. We feast on the rich food of your
house; from your delightful stream you give us drink. For with you
is the fountain of life, and in your light we see light. Continue
your kindness toward your friends, your just defense of the honest
heart. [PS 36:8-11]
The wicked draw their swords; they string their
bows To fell the poor and oppressed, to slaughter those whose way
is honest. Their swords will pierce their own hearts; their bows
will be broken. [PS 37:14-15]
Observe the honest, mark the upright; those at peace with God have a future.
But all sinners will be destroyed; the future of the wicked will be cut off.
[PS 37:37-38]
True, I was born guilty, a sinner, even as my
mother conceived me. Still, you insist on sincerity of heart; in
my inmost being teach me wisdom. Cleanse me with hyssop, that I
may be pure; wash me, make me whiter than snow. Let me hear sounds
of joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. [PS
51:7-10]
Why do you glory in evil, you scandalous liar?
All day long you plot destruction; your tongue is like a sharpened
razor, you skillful deceiver. You love evil rather than good, lies
rather than honest speech. You love any word that destroys, you
deceitful tongue. Now God will strike you down, leave you crushed
forever, Pluck you from your tent, uproot you from the land of the
living. The righteous will look on with awe; they will jeer and
say: "That one did not take God as a refuge, but trusted in
great wealth, relied on devious plots." [Taken from PS 52:3-9]
O God, the arrogant have risen against me; a
ruthless band has sought my life; to you they pay no heed. But
you, Lord, are a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, most
loving and true. Turn to me, have pity on me; give your strength
to your servant; save this child of your handmaid. Give me a sign
of your favor: make my enemies see, to their confusion, that you,
LORD, help and comfort me. [PS 86:14-17]
So all sing in their festive dance: "Within
you is my true home." [PS 87:7]
Light dawns for the just; gladness, for the
honest of heart. [PS 97:11]
Then he called down a famine on the land,
destroyed the grain that sustained them. He had sent a man ahead
of them, Joseph, sold as a slave. They shackled his feet with
chains; collared his neck in iron, Till his prediction came to
pass, and the word of the LORD proved him true. The king sent and
released him; the ruler of peoples set him free. He made him lord
over his palace, ruler over all his possessions, To instruct his
princes by his word, to teach his elders wisdom. [PS 105:16-22]
The works of your hands are right and true,
reliable all your decrees, Established forever and ever, to be
observed with loyalty and care. [PS 111:7-8]
Your justice is forever right, your teaching
forever true. [PS 119:142]
The Proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel: That men may appreciate wisdom and discipline, may understand words of intelligence;
May receive training in wise conduct, in what is right, just and honest;
That resourcefulness may be imparted to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. [Taken from PROV 1:1-4]
My son, should sinners entice you, and say,
"Come along with us! Let us lie in wait for the honest man,
let us, unprovoked, set a trap for the innocent; Let us swallow
them up, as the nether world does, alive, in the prime of life,
like those who go down to the pit! All kinds of precious wealth
shall we gain, we shall fill our houses with booty; Cast in your
lot with us, we shall all have one purse!" - My son, walk not
in the way with them, hold back your foot from their path! [PROV
1:10-15]
For the LORD gives wisdom, from his mouth come
knowledge and understanding; He has counsel in store for the
upright, he is the shield of those who walk honestly, Guarding the
paths of justice, protecting the way of his pious ones. Then you
will understand rectitude and justice, honesty, every good path;
For wisdom will enter your heart, knowledge will please your soul,
Discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you;
Saving you from the way of evil men, from men of perverse speech,
Who leave the straight paths to walk in the way of darkness [Taken
from PROV 2:6-13]
For the upright will dwell in the land, the honest will remain in it;
But the wicked will be cut off from the land, the faithless will be rooted out of it. [PROV 2:21-22]
Does not Wisdom call, and Understanding raise
her voice? On the top of the heights along the road, at the
crossroads she takes her stand; By the gates at the approaches of
the city, in the entryways she cries aloud: "To you, O men, I
call; my appeal is to the children of men. You simple ones, gain
resource, you fools, gain sense. Give heed! for noble things I
speak; honesty opens my lips. Yes, the truth my mouth recounts,
but the wickedness my lips abhor. Sincere are all the words of my
mouth, no one of them is wily or crooked; All of them are plain to
the man of intelligence, and right to those who attain knowledge.
Receive my instruction in preference to silver, and knowledge
rather than choice gold." (For Wisdom is better than corals,
and no choice possessions can compare with her.) [Taken from PROV
8:1-11]
He who walks honestly walks securely, but he
whose ways are crooked will fare badly. [PROV 10:9]
The LORD is a stronghold to him who walks
honestly, but to evildoers, their downfall. [PROV 10:29]
The honesty of the upright guides them; the
faithless are ruined by their duplicity. [PROV 11:3]
The honest man's virtue makes his way straight,
but by his wickedness the wicked man falls. [PROV 11:5]
Virtue guards one who walks honestly, but the
downfall of the wicked is sin. [PROV 13:6]
The wicked man is overthrown by his wickedness,
but the just man finds a refuge in his honesty. [PROV 14:32]
The king takes delight in honest lips, and the
man who speaks what is right he loves. [PROV 16:13]
Some friends bring ruin on us, but a true friend
is more loyal than a brother. [PROV 18:24]
He gives a kiss on the lips who makes an honest
reply. [PROV 24:26]
Bloodthirsty men hate the honest man, but the
upright show concern for his life. [PROV 29:10]
Qoheleth sought to find pleasing sayings, and to
write down true sayings with precision. [ECCL 12:10]
"Let us beset the just one, because he is
obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, Reproaches us
for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of
our training. He professes to have knowledge of God and styles
himself a child of the LORD. To us he is the censure of our
thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us, Because his life
is not like other men's, and different are his ways. He judges us
debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure. He
calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his
Father. Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what
will happen to him. For if the just one be the son of God, he will
defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes. With
revilement and torture let us put him to the test that we may have
proof of his gentleness and try his patience. Let us condemn him
to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take
care of him." These were their thoughts, but they erred; for
their wickedness blinded them, And they knew not the hidden
counsels of God; neither did they count on a recompense of
holiness nor discern the innocent souls' reward. [Taken from
WISDOM 2:12-22]
For in the things through which they suffered
distress, since they were tortured by the very things they deemed
gods, They saw and recognized the true God whom before they had
refused to know; with this, their final condemnation came upon
them. [WISDOM 12:27]
But you, our God, are good and true, slow to
anger, and governing all with mercy. [WISDOM 15:1]
With his lips an enemy speaks sweetly, but in
his heart he schemes to plunge you into the abyss. Though your
enemy has tears in his eyes, if given the chance, he will never
have enough of your blood. If evil comes upon you, you will find
him at hand; feigning to help, he will trip you up, Then he will
nod his head and clap his hands and hiss repeatedly, and show his
true face. [SIRACH 12:16-18]
Make fast friends with a man while he is poor;
thus will you enjoy his prosperity with him. In time of trouble
remain true to him, so as to share in his inheritance when it
comes. [SIRACH 22:23]
All this is true of the book of the Most High's
covenant, the law which Moses commanded us as an inheritance for
the community of Jacob. It overflows, like the Pishon, with wisdom
- like the Tigris in the days of the new fruits. It runs over,
like the Euphrates, with understanding, like the Jordan at harvest
time. It sparkles like the Nile with knowledge, like the Gihon at
vintage time. [Taken from SIRACH 24:22-25]
He does a kindness who lends to his neighbor,
and he fulfills the precepts who holds out a helping hand. Lend to
your neighbor in his hour of need, and pay back your neighbor when
a loan falls due; Keep your promise, be honest with him, and you
will always come by what you need. [SIRACH 29:1-3]
Gather all the tribes of Jacob, that they may
inherit the land as of old, Show mercy to the people called by
your name; Israel, whom you named your first-born. Take pity on
your holy city, Jerusalem, your dwelling place. Fill Zion with
your majesty, your temple with your glory. Give evidence of your
deeds of old; fulfill the prophecies spoken in your name, Reward
those who have hoped in you, and let your prophets be proved true.
Hear the prayer of your servants, for you are ever gracious to
your people; Thus it will be known to the very ends of the earth
that you are the eternal God. [Taken from SIRACH 36:10-17]
A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he stands afar off.
A true friend will fight with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your shield-bearer. [SIRACH 37:4-5]
The flute and the harp offer sweet melody, but
better than either, a voice that is true. [SIRACH 40:21]
Beloved of his people, dear to his Maker,
dedicated from his mother's womb, Consecrated to the LORD as a
prophet, was Samuel, the judge and priest. At God's word he
established the kingdom and anointed princes to rule the people.
By the law of the LORD he judged the nation, when he visited the
encampments of Jacob. As a trustworthy prophet he was sought out
and his words proved him true as a seer. [SIRACH 46:13-15]
O LORD, you are my God, I will extol you and
praise your name; For you have fulfilled your wonderful plans of
old, faithful and true. [ISA 25:1]
He who practices virtue and speaks honestly, who
spurns what is gained by oppression, Brushing his hands free of
contact with a bribe, stopping his ears lest he hear of bloodshed,
closing his eyes lest he look on evil - He shall dwell on the
heights, his stronghold shall be the rocky fastness, his food and
drink in steady supply. [ISA 33:15-16]
I have stirred up one from the north, and he
comes; from the east I summon him by name; He shall trample the
rulers down like red earth, as the potter treads the clay. Who
announced this from the beginning, that we might know; beforehand,
that we might say it is true? Not one of you foretold it, not one
spoke; no one heard you say, "The first news for Zion: they
are coming now," or, "For Jerusalem I will pick out a
bearer of the glad tidings." [ISA 41:25-27]
Let all the nations gather together, let the
peoples assemble! Who among them could have revealed this, or
foretold to us the earlier things? Let them produce witnesses to
prove themselves right, that one may hear and say, "It is
true!" [ISA 43:9]
For our offenses before you are many, our sins
bear witness against us. Yes, our offenses are present to us, and
our crimes we know: Transgressing, and denying the LORD, turning
back from following our God, Threatening outrage, and apostasy,
uttering words of falsehood the heart has conceived. Right is
repelled, and justice stands far off; For truth stumbles in the
public square, uprightness cannot enter. Honesty is lacking, and
the man who turns from evil is despoiled. The LORD saw this, and
was aggrieved that right did not exist. He saw that there was no
one, and was appalled that there was none to intervene; So his own
arm brought about the victory, and his justice lent him its
support. [ISA 59:12-16]
O LORD, do your eyes not look for honesty? You
struck them, but they did not cringe; you laid them low, but they
refused correction; They set their faces harder than stone, and
refused to return to you. [JER 5:3]
I listen closely: they speak what is not true;
No one repents of his wickedness, saying, "What have I
done!" Everyone keeps on running his course, like a steed
dashing into battle. [JER 8:6]
The LORD is true God, he is the living God, the
eternal King, Before whose anger the earth quakes, whose wrath the
nations cannot endure: He who made the earth by his power,
established the world by his wisdom, and stretched out the heavens
by his skill. [JER 10:10,12]
Because he dispensed justice to the weak and the
poor, it went well with him. Is this not true knowledge of me?
says the LORD. [JER 22:16]
See, everyone who is fond of proverbs will say
of you, 'Like mother, like daughter.' Yes, you are the true
daughter of the mother who spurned her husband and children, and
you are a true sister to those who spurned their husbands and
children - your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
Your elder sister was Samaria with her daughters, living to the
north of you; and your younger sister, living to the south of you,
was Sodom with her daughters. Yet not only in their ways did you
walk, and act as abominably as they did; in a very short time you
became more corrupt in all your ways than they. [EZEK 16:44-47]
You shall have honest scales, an honest ephah,
and an honest liquid measure. [EZEK 45:10]
Nebuchadnezzar flew into a rage and sent for
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were promptly brought before
the king. King Nebuchadnezzar questioned them: "Is it true,
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you will not serve my god,
or worship the golden statue that I set up? Be ready now to fall
down and worship the statue I had made, whenever you hear the
sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and
all the other musical instruments; otherwise, you shall be
instantly cast into the white-hot furnace; and who is the God that
can deliver you out of my hands?" Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar, "There is no need for
us to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If our God, whom
we serve, can save us from the white-hot furnace and from your
hands, O king, may he save us! But even if he will not, know, O
king, that we will not serve your god or worship the golden statue
which you set up." [DAN 3:13-18]
"The vision of the evenings and the mornings is
true, as spoken; Do you, however, keep this vision undisclosed,
because the days are to be many." [Taken from DAN 8:26]
Thus says the LORD of hosts: Render true
judgment, and show kindness and compassion toward each other. [Taken
from ZECH 7:9]
These then are the things you should do: Speak the truth to one another; let there be honesty and peace in the judgments at your gates, and let none of you plot evil against another in his heart, nor love a false oath. For all these things I hate, says the LORD. [ZECH 8:16-17]
Then you will know that I sent you this
commandment because I have a covenant with Levi, says the LORD of
hosts. My covenant with him was one of life and peace; fear I put
in him, and he feared me, and stood in awe of my name. True
doctrine was in his mouth, and no dishonesty was found upon his
lips; He walked with me in integrity and in uprightness, and
turned many away from evil. For the lips of the priest are to keep
knowledge, and instruction is to be sought from his mouth, because
he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. [MAL 2:4-7]
"For the children of this world are more
prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children
of light. I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest
wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal
dwellings. The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is
also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in
very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. If, therefore,
you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you
with true wealth? If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to
another, who will give you what is yours? No servant can serve two
masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted
to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and
mammon." [Taken from LK 16:8-13]
Then he told them a parable about the necessity
for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said,
"There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God
nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to
come to him and say, 'Render a just decision for me against my
adversary.' For a long time the judge was unwilling, but
eventually he thought, 'While it is true that I neither fear God
nor respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me
I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and
strike me.'" The Lord said, "Pay attention to what the
dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his
chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to
answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done
for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"
[LK 18:1-8]
A man named John was sent from God. He came for
testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe
through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the
light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into
the world. [Taken from JN 1:6-9]
Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We
have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the
prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth." But Nathanael
said to him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?"
Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael
coming toward him and said of him, "Here is a true Israelite.
There is no duplicity in him." [JN 1:45-47]
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus
said to her, "Give me a drink." His disciples had gone
into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him,
"How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a
drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)
Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God
and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked
him and he would have given you living water." (The woman)
said to him, "Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the
cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water? Are you
greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank
from it himself with his children and his flocks?" Jesus
answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks this water
will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give
will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a
spring of water welling up to eternal life." The woman said
to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be
thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." Jesus
said to her, "Go call your husband and come back." The
woman answered and said to him, "I do not have a
husband." Jesus answered her, "You are right in saying,
'I do not have a husband.' For you have had five husbands, and the
one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is
true." The woman said to him, "Sir, I can see that you
are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you
people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem." Jesus
said to her, "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you
will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we
understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is
coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the
Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such
people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him
must worship in Spirit and truth." The woman said to him,
"I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the
Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything." Jesus
said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with
you." [JN 4:7-26]
[Jesus said,] "If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony cannot be verified.
But there is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true." [Taken from JN 5:31-32]
So they said to him, "What sign can you do,
that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors
ate manna in the desert, as it is written: 'He gave them bread
from heaven to eat.'" So Jesus said to them, "Amen,
amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from
heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the
bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life
to the world." So they said to him, "Sir, give us this
bread always." Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of
life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes
in me will never thirst. But I told you that although you have
seen (me), you do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me
will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me,
because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will
of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent
me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I
should raise it (on) the last day. For this is the will of my
Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may
have eternal life, and I shall raise him (on) the last day."
The Jews murmured about him because he said, "I am the bread
that came down from heaven," and they said, "Is this not
Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother?
Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus
answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and
I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets:
'They shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to my
Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen
the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am
the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but
they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that
one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down
from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the
bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the
world." The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying,
"How can this man give us (his) flesh to eat?" Jesus
said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the
flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life
within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal
life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true
food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks
my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father
sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who
feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that
came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still
died, whoever eats this bread will live forever." [JN 6:30-58]
When the feast was already half over, Jesus went
up into the temple area and began to teach. The Jews were amazed
and said, "How does he know scripture without having
studied?" Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is
not my own but is from the one who sent me. Whoever chooses to do
his will shall know whether my teaching is from God or whether I
speak on my own. Whoever speaks on his own seeks his own glory,
but whoever seeks the glory of the one who sent him is truthful,
and there is no wrong in him. Did not Moses give you the law? Yet
none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"
The crowd answered, "You are possessed! Who is trying to kill
you?" Jesus answered and said to them, "I performed one
work and all of you are amazed because of it. Moses gave you
circumcision - not that it came from Moses but rather from the
patriarchs - and you circumcise a man on the sabbath. If a man can
receive circumcision on a sabbath so that the law of Moses may not
be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole person
well on a sabbath? Stop judging by appearances, but judge
justly." So some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said,
"Is he not the one they are trying to kill? And look, he is
speaking openly and they say nothing to him. Could the authorities
have realized that he is the Messiah? But we know where he is
from. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is
from." So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was
teaching and said, "You know me and also know where I am
from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom
you do not know, is true. I know him, because I am from him, and
he sent me." So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a
hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come. But many of the
crowd began to believe in him, and said, "When the Messiah
comes, will he perform more signs than this man has done?" [JN
7:14-31]
He said to them, "You belong to what is
below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I
do not belong to this world. That is why I told you that you will
die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will
die in your sins." So they said to him, "Who are
you?" Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the
beginning. I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the
one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the
world." They did not realize that he was speaking to them of
the Father. So Jesus said (to them), "When you lift up the
Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing
on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me. The one who
sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do
what is pleasing to him." Because he spoke this way, many
came to believe in him. [JN 8:23-30]
[Jesus said,] "If I do not perform my
Father's works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if
you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize
(and understand) that the Father is in me and I am in the
Father." (Then) they tried again to arrest him; but he
escaped from their power. He went back across the Jordan to the
place where John first baptized, and there he remained. Many came
to him and said, "John performed no sign, but everything John
said about this man was true." And many there began to
believe in him. [Taken from JN 10:37-42]
[Jesus said,] "I am the true vine, and my
Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that
does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it
bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that
I spoke to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch
cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so
neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are
the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much
fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not
remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people
will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be
burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for
whatever you want and it will be done for you. By this is my
Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my
disciples. As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in
my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his
love." [Taken from JN 15:1-10]
Now this is eternal life, that they should know
you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. [Taken
from JN
17:3]
Now since it was preparation day, in order that
the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the
sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate
that their legs be broken and they be taken down. So the soldiers
came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who
was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that
he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier
thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water
flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is
true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may
(come to) believe. For this happened so that the scripture passage
might be fulfilled: "Not a bone of it will be broken."
And again another passage says: "They will look upon him whom
they have pierced." [JN 19:31-37]
It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them,
and we know that his testimony is true. There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.
[JN 21:24-25]
Therefore, you are without excuse, every one of
you who passes judgment. For by the standard by which you judge
another you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the very
same things. We know that the judgment of God on those who do such
things is true. Do you suppose, then, you who judge those who
engage in such things and yet do them yourself, that you will
escape the judgment of God? Or do you hold his priceless kindness,
forbearance, and patience in low esteem, unaware that the kindness
of God would lead you to repentance? By your stubbornness and
impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself for the
day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God, who will
repay everyone according to his works: eternal life to those who
seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good
works, but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth
and obey wickedness. Yes, affliction and distress will come upon
every human being who does evil, Jew first and then Greek. But
there will be glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good,
Jew first and then Greek. There is no partiality with God. [ROM 2:1-11]
One is not a Jew outwardly. True circumcision is not outward, in the flesh. Rather, one is a Jew inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart, in the spirit, not the letter; his praise is not from human beings but from God.
[ROM 2:28-29]
What advantage is there then in being a Jew? Or
what is the value of circumcision? Much, in every respect. (For)
in the first place, they were entrusted with the utterances of
God. What if some were unfaithful? Will their infidelity nullify
the fidelity of God? Of course not! God must be true, though every
human being is a liar, as it is written: "That you may be
justified in your words, and conquer when you are judged."
But if our wickedness provides proof of God's righteousness, what
can we say? Is God unjust, humanly speaking, to inflict his wrath?
Of course not! For how else is God to judge the world? But if
God's truth redounds to his glory through my falsehood, why am I
still being condemned as a sinner? And why not say - as we are
accused and as some claim we say - that we should do evil that
good may come of it? Their penalty is what they deserve. [ROM 3:1-8]
For this reason we are encouraged. And besides our
encouragement, we rejoice even more because of the joy of Titus,
since his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. For if I have boasted to him about you, I was not put to shame. No, just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting before Titus proved to be the truth.
[2COR 7:13-14]
The thief must no longer steal, but rather
labor, doing honest work with his (own) hands, so that he may have
something to share with one in need. [EPH 4:28]
Yes, and I ask you also, my true yokemate, to
help them, for they have struggled at my side in promoting the
gospel, along with Clement and my other co-workers, whose names
are in the book of life. [PHIL 4:3]
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is
honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is
anything worthy of praise, think about these things. [PHIL 4:8]
For from you the word of the Lord has sounded
forth not only in Macedonia and (in) Achaia, but in every place
your faith in God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say
anything. For they themselves openly declare about us what sort of
reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols
to serve the living and true God and to await his Son from heaven,
whom he raised from (the) dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the
coming wrath. [1THES 1:8-10]
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, to Timothy, my true child in faith: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
[1TM 1:1-2]
Tell the rich in the present age not to be proud
and not to rely on so uncertain a thing as wealth but rather on
God, who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment.
Tell them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous,
ready to share, thus accumulating as treasure a good foundation
for the future, so as to win the life that is true life. [1TM 6:17-19]
For this reason I left you in Crete so that you
might set right what remains to be done and appoint presbyters in
every town, as I directed you, on condition that a man be
blameless, married only once, with believing children who are not
accused of licentiousness or rebellious. For a bishop as God's
steward must be blameless, not arrogant, not irritable, not a
drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for sordid gain, but
hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just, holy, and
self-controlled, holding fast to the true message as taught so
that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine and to
refute opponents. For there are also many rebels, idle talkers and
deceivers... It is imperative to silence them, as they are
upsetting whole families by teaching for sordid gain what they
should not. One of them, a prophet of their own, once said,
"Cretans have always been liars, vicious beasts, and lazy
gluttons." That testimony is true. Therefore, admonish them
sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith, instead of paying
attention to Jewish myths and regulations of people who have repudiated the truth.
[Taken from TI 1:5-14] [Note: Religious offices indicated in
the New Testament are in their infancy and can be shown to be
developing even in Scripture. Within a short time, many religious
offices in the Church adopted Jesus' and Paul's recommended
observance of celibacy as a
general rule.]
The main point of what has been said is this: we
have such a high priest, who has taken his seat at the right hand
of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister of the
sanctuary and of the true tabernacle that the Lord, not man, set
up. [HEB 8:1-2]
For Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made
by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might
now appear before God on our behalf. [HEB 9:24]
I write you this briefly through Silvanus, whom
I consider a faithful brother, exhorting you and testifying that
this is the true grace of God. Remain firm in it. [1PT 5:12]
These people are waterless springs and mists
driven by a gale; for them the gloom of darkness has been
reserved. For, talking empty bombast, they seduce with licentious
desires of the flesh those who have barely escaped from people who
live in error. They promise them freedom, though they themselves
are slaves of corruption, for a person is a slave of whatever
overcomes him. For if they, having escaped the defilements of the
world through the knowledge of (our) Lord and savior Jesus Christ,
again become entangled and overcome by them, their last condition
is worse than their first. For it would have been better for them
not to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it
to turn back from the holy commandment handed down to them. What
is expressed in the true proverb has happened to them, "The
dog returns to its own vomit," and "A bathed sow returns
to wallowing in the mire." [2PT 2:17-22]
Let what you heard from the beginning remain in
you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you
will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise
that he made us: eternal life. I write you these things about
those who would deceive you. As for you, the anointing that you
received from him remains in you, so that you do not need anyone
to teach you. But his anointing teaches you about everything and
is true and not false; just as it taught you, remain in him. And
now, children, remain in him, so that when he appears we may have
confidence and not be put to shame by him at his coming. If you
consider that he is righteous, you also know that everyone who
acts in righteousness is begotten by him. [1JN 2:24-29]
We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one.
We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. [1JN 5:19-20]
Demetrius receives a good report from all, even
from the truth itself. We give our testimonial as well, and you
know our testimony is true. [3JN 1:12]
"To the angel of the church in
Philadelphia, write this: 'The holy one, the true, who holds the
key of David, who opens and no one shall close, who closes and no
one shall open, says this: "I know your works (behold, I have
left an open door before you, which no one can close). You have
limited strength, and yet you have kept my word and have not
denied my name. Behold, I will make those of the assembly of Satan
who claim to be Jews and are not, but are lying, behold I will
make them come and fall prostrate at your feet, and they will
realize that I love you. Because you have kept my message of
endurance, I will keep you safe in the time of trial that is going
to come to the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth. I
am coming quickly. Hold fast to what you have, so that no one may
take your crown. The victor I will make into a pillar in the
temple of my God, and he will never leave it again. On him I will
inscribe the name of my God and the name of the city of my God,
the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God, as
well as my new name. Whoever has ears ought to hear what the
Spirit says to the churches."'" [RV 3:7-13]
"To the angel of the church in Laodicea,
write this: 'The Amen, the faithful and true witness, the
source of God's creation, says this: "I know your works; I
know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either
cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I
will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, 'I am rich and
affluent and have no need of anything,' and yet do not realize
that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I advise
you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich,
and white garments to put on so that your shameful nakedness may
not be exposed, and buy ointment to smear on your eyes so that you
may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest,
therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If
anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (then) I will enter his
house and dine with him, and he with me. I will give the victor
the right to sit with me on my throne, as I myself first won the
victory and sit with my Father on his throne. Whoever has ears
ought to hear what the Spirit says to the churches."'" [RV
3:14-22]
When he broke open the fifth seal, I saw
underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered
because of the witness they bore to the word of God. They cried
out in a loud voice, "How long will it be, holy and true
master, before you sit in judgment and avenge our blood on the
inhabitants of the earth?" Each of them was given a white
robe, and they were told to be patient a little while longer until
the number was filled of their fellow servants and brothers who
were going to be killed as they had been. [RV 6:9-11]
Then I saw something like a sea of glass mingled
with fire. On the sea of glass were standing those who had won the
victory over the beast and its image and the number that signified
its name. They were holding God's harps, and they sang the song of
Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb: "Great
and wonderful are your works, Lord God almighty. Just and true are
your ways, O king of the nations. Who will not fear you, Lord, or
glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All the nations will
come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been
revealed." [RV 15:2-4]
The third angel poured out his bowl on the
rivers and springs of water. These also turned to blood. Then I
heard the angel in charge of the waters say: "You are just, O
Holy One, who are and who were, in passing this sentence. For they
have shed the blood of the holy ones and the prophets, and you
(have) given them blood to drink; it is what they deserve."
Then I heard the altar cry out, "Yes, Lord God almighty, your
judgments are true and just." [Taken from RV 16:4-7]
After this I heard what sounded like the loud
voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying: "Alleluia!
Salvation, glory, and might belong to our God, for true and just
are his judgments. He has condemned the great harlot who corrupted
the earth with her harlotry. He has avenged on her the blood of
his servants." [RV 19:2]
Then the angel said to me, "Write this:
Blessed are those who have been called to the wedding feast of the
Lamb." And he said to me, "These words are true; they
come from God." I fell at his feet to worship him. But he
said to me, "Don't! I am a fellow servant of yours and of
your brothers who bear witness to Jesus. Worship God. Witness to
Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." [RV 19:9-10]
Then I saw the heavens opened, and there was a
white horse; its rider was (called) "Faithful and True."
He judges and wages war in righteousness. His eyes were (like) a
fiery flame, and on his head were many diadems. He had a name
inscribed that no one knows except himself. He wore a cloak that
had been dipped in blood, and his name was called the Word of God.
The armies of heaven followed him, mounted on white horses and
wearing clean white linen. Out of his mouth came a sharp sword to
strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod, and he
himself will tread out in the wine press the wine of the fury and
wrath of God the almighty. He has a name written on his cloak and
on his thigh, "King of kings and Lord of lords." [RV
19:11-16]
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The
former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea
was no more. I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming
down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her
husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
"Behold, God's dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell
with them and they will be his people and God himself will always
be with them (as their God). He will wipe every tear from their
eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or
pain, (for) the old order has passed away." The one who sat
on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new."
Then he said, "Write these words down, for they are
trustworthy and true." He said to me, "They are
accomplished. I (am) the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and
the end. To the thirsty I will give a gift from the spring of
life-giving water. The victor will inherit these gifts, and I
shall be his God, and he will be my son. But as for cowards, the
unfaithful, the depraved, murderers, the unchaste, sorcerers,
idol-worshipers, and deceivers of every sort, their lot is in the
burning pool of fire and sulfur, which is the second death." [RV
21:1-8]
And he said to me, "These words are
trustworthy and true, and the Lord, the God of prophetic spirits,
sent his angel to show his servants what must happen soon."
"Behold, I am coming soon." Blessed is the one who keeps
the prophetic message of this book. [RV 22:6-7]
