"Often, too, the fair speech of friends entrusted with the administration of affairs has induced many placed in authority to become accomplices in the shedding of innocent blood, and has involved them in irreparable calamities by deceiving with malicious slander the sincere good will of rulers." [ESTH
E:5-6]
You hate all who do evil; you destroy all who speak falsely. Murderers and deceivers the
LORD abhors. [Taken from PS 5:6-7]
Help, LORD, for no one loyal remains; the faithful have vanished from the human race Those who tell lies to one another speak with deceiving lips and a double heart.
May the LORD cut off all deceiving lips, and every boastful
tongue [Taken from PS 12:2-4]
I do not sit with deceivers, nor with hypocrites do I
mingle. I hate the company of evildoers; with the wicked I do not sit. I will wash my hands in innocence and walk round your altar, LORD, Lifting my voice in thanks, recounting all your wondrous deeds. [PS
26:4-7]
Why do you glory in evil, you scandalous liar? All day long you plot destruction; your tongue is like a sharpened razor,
you skillful deceiver. [PS 52:3-4]
The shrewd man's wisdom gives him knowledge of his way, but the
folly of fools is their deception. [PROV 14:8]
Is the man who deceives his neighbor, and then says, "I
was only joking." [PROV 26:19]
Every word of God is tested; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Add nothing to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be
exposed as a deceiver. [PROV 30:5-6]
Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the
LORD is to be praised. [PROV 31:30]
From the deep belly of the nether world; From deceiving lips and painters of lies, from the arrows of dishonest tongues.
I was at the point of death, my soul was nearing the depths of the nether world; I turned every way, but there was no one to help me, I looked for one to sustain me, but could find no one. But then I remembered the mercies of the LORD, his kindness through ages past;
For he saves those who take refuge in him, and rescues them from every evil. So I raised my voice from the very earth, from the gates of the nether world, my cry. I called out: O Lord, you are my father, you are my champion and my savior;
Do not abandon me in time of trouble, in the midst of storms and dangers. I will ever praise your name and be constant in my prayers to you.
Thereupon the LORD heard my voice, he listened to my appeal; He saved me from evil of every kind
and preserved me in time of trouble. For this reason I thank him and I praise him; I bless the name of the LORD.
[SIRACH 51:5-12]
Deceptive indeed are the hills, the thronging mountains; In the
LORD, our God, alone is the salvation of Israel. [JER 3:23]
Why do these people rebel with obstinate resistance? Why do
they cling to deceptive idols, refuse to turn back? [JER 8:5]
Each one deceives the other, no one speaks the truth. They have
accustomed their tongues to lying, and are perverse, and cannot
repent. [JER 9:4]
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let
yourselves be deceived by the prophets and diviners who are among
you; do not listen to those among you who dream dreams. For they prophesy lies to you in my name; I did not send them, says the LORD.
[Taken from JER 29:8-9]
See, I make you small among the nations; you are held in dire contempt. The pride of your heart has deceived you: you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose abode is in the heights,
Who say in your heart, "Who will bring me down to earth?" Though you go as high as the eagle, and your nest be set among the stars,
From there will I bring you down, says the LORD. [OBAD 1:2-4]
As he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately and said, "Tell us, when will this happen, and what sign will there be of your coming, and of the end of the age?" Jesus said to them in reply, "See that no one deceives you.
For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Messiah,' and they will deceive many. You will hear of wars
and reports of wars; see that you are not alarmed, for these things must happen, but it will not yet be the end. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be famines and earthquakes from place to place. All these are the beginning of the labor pains. Then they will hand you over to persecution, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name. And then many will be led into sin; they will betray and hate one another. Many false prophets will arise and deceive many; and because of the increase of evildoing, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world as a witness to all nations,
and then the end will come." [MT 24:3-14]
If anyone says to you then, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. False messiahs and false prophets will arise, and they will perform signs and wonders so great as to deceive, if that were possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told it to you beforehand. So if they say to you, 'He is in the desert,' do not go out there; if they say, 'He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe
it. For just as lightning comes from the east and is seen as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
[MT 24:23-27]
Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name saying, 'I am he,' and they will deceive many.
When you hear of wars and reports of wars do not be alarmed; such things must happen, but it will not yet be the end. Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes from place to place and there will be famines. These are the beginnings of the labor pains."
[MK 13:5-8]
He answered, "See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and 'The time has come.'
Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.
Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. It will lead to your giving testimony. Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking
that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed.
By your perseverance you will secure your lives." [LK 21:8-19]
"All have gone astray; all alike are worthless; there is not one who does good, (there is not) even one. Their throats are open graves; they deceive with their tongues;
the venom of asps is on their lips; their mouths are full of bitter cursing. Their feet are quick to shed blood;
ruin and misery are in their ways, and the way of peace they know not.
There is no fear of God before their eyes." [ROM 3:12-18]
For sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me
and through it put me to death. So then the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
[ROM 7:11-12]
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who create dissensions and obstacles, in opposition to the teaching that you learned; avoid them.
For such people do not serve our Lord Christ but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the innocent.
[ROM 16:17-18]
Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool so as to become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the
eyes of God, for it is written: "He catches the wise in their own ruses,"
and again: "The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain."
[1COR 3:18-20]
Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the kingdom of
God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor idolaters nor
adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor practicing homosexuals nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.
[1COR 6:9-10]
We cause no one to stumble in anything, in order that no fault may be found with our ministry;
on the contrary, in everything we commend ourselves as ministers of God, through much endurance, in afflictions, hardships, constraints,
beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, vigils, fasts; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, in a holy spirit, in unfeigned love,
in truthful speech, in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness at the right and at the left;
through glory and dishonor, insult and praise. We are treated as deceivers and yet are
truthful; as unrecognized and yet acknowledged; as dying and behold we live; as chastised and yet not put to death;
as sorrowful yet always rejoicing; as poor yet enriching many; as having nothing and yet possessing all things.
[2COR 6:3-10]
But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his
cunning, your thoughts may be corrupted from a sincere (and pure)
commitment to Christ. [2COR 11:3]
Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the
disobedient. So do not be associated with them. [EPH 5:6-7]
I say this so that no one may deceive you by specious arguments.
For even if I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing as I observe your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.
[COL 2:4-5]
Our exhortation was not from delusion or impure motives, nor
did it work through deception. But as we were judged worthy by God to be entrusted with the gospel, that is how we speak, not as trying to please human
beings, but rather God, who judges our hearts. Nor, indeed, did we ever appear with flattering speech, as you know, or with a pretext for
greed - God is witness - nor did we seek praise from human beings, either from you or from others, although we were able to impose our weight as apostles of Christ. Rather, we were gentle among you, as a nursing mother cares for her children. With such affection for you, we were determined to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our very selves as well, so dearly beloved had you become to us. [1THES
2:3-8]
We ask you, brothers, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a "spirit,"
or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand. Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy comes first and the lawless one is revealed,
the one doomed to perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of God,
claiming that he is a god - do you not recall that while I was still with you I told you these things? And now you know what is restraining,
that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is removed from the scene. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord (Jesus) will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming, the one whose coming springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in signs and wonders that lie, and in every wicked deceit for those who are perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth so that they may be saved. Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power so that they may believe the lie, that all who have not believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned.
[2THES 2:1-12]
A woman must receive instruction silently and under complete control.
I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. She must be quiet.
For Adam was formed first, then Eve. Further, Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed.
[1TM 2:11-14]
In fact, all who want to live religiously in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
But wicked people and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived.
[2TM 3:12-13]
For a bishop as God's steward must be blameless, not arrogant, not irritable, not a drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for sordid gain,
but hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just, holy, and self-controlled,
holding fast to the true message as taught so that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine and to refute opponents.
For there are also many rebels, idle talkers and deceivers, especially the Jewish
Christians. It is imperative to silence them, as they are upsetting whole families by teaching for sordid gain what they should not.
[TI 1:7-11]
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers: all good giving and every perfect gift
is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change.
[JMS 1:16-17]
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, his religion is vain.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows
in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. [JMS
1:26-27]
If we say, "We are without sin," we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing.
If we say, "We have not sinned," we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
[1JN 1:8-10]
Let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the
Father. And this is the promise that he made us: eternal life. I write you these things about those who would deceive you.
[1JN 2:24-26]
Children, let no one deceive you. The person who acts in righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous.
Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil.
No one who is begotten by God commits sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot sin because he is begotten by
God. In this way, the children of God and the children of the devil are made plain; no one who fails to act in righteousness belongs to God, nor anyone who does not love his brother.
[1JN 3:7-10]
Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh; such is the deceitful one and the
antichrist. Look to yourselves that you do not lose what we worked for but may receive a full recompense.
Anyone who is so "progressive" as not to remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God; whoever remains in the teaching has the Father and the Son.
If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him in your house or even greet him;
for whoever greets him shares in his evil works. [2JN 1:7-11]
Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back,
but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it.
[RV 12:7-9]
Then I saw another beast come up out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb's but spoke like a dragon.
It wielded all the authority of the first beast in its sight and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound had been healed. It performed great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of everyone.
It deceived the inhabitants of the earth with the signs it was allowed to perform in the sight of the first beast, telling them to make an image for the beast who had been wounded by the sword and revived.
[RV 13:11-14]
When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison.
He will go out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and
Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea.
They invaded the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the holy ones and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them. The Devil who had led them astray was thrown into the pool of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet were. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
[RV 20:7-10]
"But as for cowards, the unfaithful, the depraved, murderers,
the unchaste, sorcerers, idol-worshipers, and deceivers of every
sort, their lot is in the burning pool of fire and sulfur, which
is the second death." [RV 21:8]
