But you should also look among all the people for able and
God-fearing men, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain, and set
them as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of
fifties, and of tens. [EX 18:21]
"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."
[EX 20:16]
In every question of dishonest appropriation, whether it be
about an ox, or an ass, or a sheep, or a garment, or anything else
that has disappeared, where another claims that the thing is his,
both parties shall present their case before God; the one whom God
convicts must make twofold restitution to the other. [EX 22:8]
"You shall not repeat a false report. Do not join the
wicked in putting your hand, as an unjust witness, upon anyone."
[EX 23:1]
You shall keep away from anything dishonest. The innocent and
the just you shall not put to death, nor shall you acquit the
guilty. [EX 23:7]
"If someone commits a sin of dishonesty against the LORD by denying his neighbor a deposit or a pledge for a stolen article, or by otherwise retaining his neighbor's goods unjustly, or if, having found a lost article, he denies the fact and swears falsely about it with any of the sinful oaths that men make in such cases, he shall therefore, since he has incurred guilt by his sin, restore the thing that was stolen or unjustly retained by him or the deposit left with him or the lost article he found or whatever else he swore falsely about; on the day of his guilt offering he shall make full restitution of the thing itself, and in addition, give the owner one fifth of its
value".
[LEV 5:21-24]
"You shall not steal. You shall not lie or speak falsely
to one another." [LEV 19:11]
"You shall not act dishonestly in rendering judgment. Show
neither partiality to the weak nor deference to the mighty, but
judge your fellow men justly." [LEV 19:15]
"Do not act dishonestly in using measures of length or
weight or capacity." [LEV 19:35]
'You shall not bear dishonest witness against your neighbor.'
[DEUT 5:20]
"If an unjust witness takes the stand against a man to accuse him of a defection from the law, the two parties in the dispute shall appear before the LORD in the presence of the priests or judges in office at that time; and if after a thorough investigation the judges find that the witness is a false witness and has accused his kinsman falsely, you shall do to him as he planned to do to his kinsman. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst. The rest, on hearing of it, shall fear, and never again do a thing so evil among you."
[DEUT 19:16-20]
Everyone who is dishonest in any of these matters is an
abomination to the LORD, your God. [DEUT 25:16]
You are not a god who delights in evil; no wicked person finds refuge with you; the arrogant cannot stand before you.
You hate all who do evil; you destroy all who speak falsely.
Murderers and deceivers the LORD abhors. [PS 5:5-7]
"The clean of hand and pure of heart, who are not devoted
to idols, who have not sworn falsely. They will receive blessings from the LORD, and justice from their saving God. Such are the people that love the LORD, that seek the face of the God of Jacob."
[Taken from PS 24:4-6]
Sin directs the heart of the wicked; their eyes are closed to the fear of God. For they live with the delusion: their guilt will not be known and hated. Empty and false are the words of their mouth;
they have ceased to be wise and do good. In their beds they hatch plots; they set out on a wicked way; they do not reject evil.
[PS 36:2-5]
Happy those whose trust is the LORD, who turn not to idolatry
or to those who stray after falsehood. [PS 40:5]
I look to the faithful of the land; they alone can be my companions.
Those who follow the way of integrity, they alone can enter my service.
No one who practices deceit can hold a post in my court. No one
who speaks falsely can be among my advisors. [PS 101:6-7]
Through your precepts I gain insight; therefore I hate all
false ways. [PS 119:104]
Falsehood I hate and abhor; your teaching I love. [PS 119:163]
Put away from you dishonest talk, deceitful speech put far from
you. [PROV 4:24]
The false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord
among brothers. [PROV 6:19]
False scales are an abomination to the LORD, but a full weight
is his delight. [PROV 11:1]
The evil man gives heed to wicked lips, and listens to
falsehood from a mischievous tongue. [PROV 17:4]
There is a shrewdness keen but dishonest, which by duplicity
wins a judgment. [SIRACH 19:21]
A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he
stands afar off. [SIRACH 37:4]
Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before
master and mistress, of falsehood... These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.
[SIRACH 41:15,24]
From the deep belly of the nether world; From deceiving lips and painters of lies, from the arrows of dishonest tongues.
I was at the point of death, my soul was nearing the depths of the nether world; I turned every way, but there was no one to help me, I looked for one to sustain me, but could find no one. But then I remembered the mercies of the LORD, his kindness through ages past;
For he saves those who take refuge in him, and rescues them from every evil.
[SIRACH 51:5-8]
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry
for help, and he will say: Here I am! If you remove from your
midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech [Taken
from ISA 58:9]
Lo, the hand of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear
too dull to hear. Rather, it is your crimes that separate you from
your God, It is your sins that make him hide his face so that he
will not hear you. For your hands are stained with blood, your
fingers with guilt; Your lips speak falsehood, and your tongue
utters deceit. [ISA 59:1-3]
For our offenses before you are many, our sins bear witness against us.
Yes, our offenses are present to us, and our crimes we know: Transgressing, and denying the LORD, turning back from following our God,
Threatening outrage, and apostasy, uttering words of falsehood the heart has conceived. Right is repelled, and justice stands far off;
For truth stumbles in the public square, uprightness cannot enter. Honesty is lacking, and the man who turns from evil is despoiled.
The LORD saw this, and was aggrieved that right did not exist.
[ISA 59:12-15]
Though they say, "As the LORD lives," they swear
falsely. [JER 5:2]
My people come to you as people always do; they sit down before
you and hear your words, but they will not obey them, for lies are
on their lips and their desires are fixed on dishonest gain. [EZEK
33:31]
But Susanna cried aloud: "O eternal God, you know what is hidden and are aware of all things before they come to be: you know that they have testified falsely against me. Here I am about to die, though I have done none of the things with which these wicked men have charged me." The Lord heard her prayer. As she was being led to execution, God stirred up the holy spirit of a young boy named Daniel, and he cried aloud: "I will have no part in the death of this woman." All the people turned and asked him, "What is this you are saying?" He stood in their midst and continued, "Are you such fools, O Israelites! To condemn a woman of Israel without examination and without clear evidence? Return to court, for they have testified falsely against her."... Thus was innocent blood spared that day.
[Taken from DAN 13:42-49,62]
Their heart is false, now they pay for their guilt; God shall break down their altars and destroy their sacred pillars. If they would say, "We have no
king" - Since they do not fear the LORD, what can the king do for them?
Nothing but make promises, swear false oaths, and make alliances,
While justice grows wild like wormwood in a plowed field! [HOSEA
10:2-4]
But you have cultivated wickedness, reaped perversity, and
eaten the fruit of falsehood. Because you have trusted in your
chariots, and in your many warriors, Turmoil shall break out among your tribes and all your fortresses shall be ravaged
As Salman ravaged Beth-arbel in time of war... So shall it be done to you, Bethel, because of your utter
wickedness [Taken from HOSEA 10:13-15]
A merchant who holds a false balance, who loves to defraud!
[HOSEA 12:8]
True doctrine was in his mouth, and no dishonesty was found
upon his lips; He walked with me in integrity and in uprightness,
and turned many away from evil. [MAL 2:6]
"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's
clothing, but underneath are ravenous wolves." [MT 7:15]
The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none. Many gave false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. Some took the stand and testified falsely against him, alleging, "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands and within three days I will build another not made with hands.'" Even so their testimony did not agree.
[MK 14:55-59]
Then he also said to his disciples, "A rich man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property. He summoned him and said, 'What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.' The steward said to himself, 'What shall I do, now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me? I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg. I know what I shall do so that, when I am removed from the stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes.' He called in his master's debtors one by one. To the first he said, 'How much do you owe my master?' He replied, 'One hundred measures of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.' Then to another he said, 'And you, how much do you owe?' He replied, 'One hundred kors
of wheat.' He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note; write one for eighty.' And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.
For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours? No servant can serve two masters.
He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."
[Taken from LK 16:1-13]
Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said,
"There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, 'Render a just decision for me against my adversary.' For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, 'While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.'" The Lord said, "Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"
[LK 18:1-8]
He then addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. "Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of
humanity - greedy, dishonest, adulterous - or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.' But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
[LK 18:9-14]
For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, who
masquerade as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light. So it is not strange that his ministers also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
[2COR 11:13-15]
False brothers secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy on
our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, that they might enslave
us - to them we did not submit even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain intact for you.
[Taken from GAL 2:4-5]
Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to
his neighbor, for we are members one of another. [EPH 4:25]
I repeat the request I made of you when I was on my way to
Macedonia, that you stay in Ephesus to instruct certain people not
to teach false doctrines [1TM 1:3]
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your
hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. [JMS 3:14]
There were also false prophets among the people, just as there
will be false teachers among you, who will introduce destructive
heresies and even deny the Master who ransomed them, bringing
swift destruction on themselves. [2PT 2:1]
Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see
whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone
out into the world. [1JN 4:1]
