                 | Saul replied to Samuel: "I have sinned, for I have
disobeyed the command of the LORD and your instructions. In my
fear of the people, I did what they said. Now forgive my sin, and
return with me, that I may worship the LORD." But Samuel said
to Saul, "I will not return with you, because you rejected
the command of the LORD and the LORD rejects you as king of
Israel." As Samuel turned to go, Saul seized a loose end of
his mantle, and it tore off. So Samuel said to him: "The LORD
has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it
to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. The Glory of
Israel neither retracts nor repents, for he is not man that he
should repent." But he answered: "I have sinned, yet
honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel.
Return with me that I may worship the LORD your God." And so
Samuel returned with him, and Saul worshiped the LORD. [1SAM 15:24-31] "If the sky is closed, so that there is no rain, because they have sinned against you and you afflict them, and if then they repent of their sin, and pray, and praise your name in this place, listen in heaven and forgive the sin of your servant and of your people Israel, teaching them the right way to live and sending rain upon this land of yours which you have given to your people as their heritage."
[1KGS 8:35-36] "When they sin against you (for there is no man who does
not sin), and in your anger against them you deliver them to the
enemy, so that their captors deport them to a hostile land, far or
near, may they repent in the land of their captivity and be
converted. If then they entreat you in the land of their captors
and say, 'We have sinned and done wrong; we have been wicked'; if
with their whole heart and soul they turn back to you in the land
of the enemies who took them captive, pray to you toward the land
you gave their fathers, the city you have chosen, and the temple I
have built in your honor, listen from your heavenly dwelling.
Forgive your people their sins and all the offenses they have
committed against you, and grant them mercy before their captors,
so that these will be merciful to them." [1KGS 8:46-50]  Then Job answered the LORD and said: I know that you can do all
things, and that no purpose of yours can be hindered. I have dealt
with great things that I do not understand; things too wonderful
for me, which I cannot know. I had heard of you by word of mouth,
but now my eye has seen you. Therefore I disown what I have said,
and repent in dust and ashes. And it came to pass after the LORD
had spoken these words to Job, that the LORD said to Eliphaz the
Temanite, "I am angry with you and with your two friends; for
you have not spoken rightly concerning me, as has my servant
Job." Then Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and
Zophar the Naamathite, went and did as the LORD had commanded
them. And the LORD accepted the intercession of Job. Also, the
LORD restored the prosperity of Job, after he had prayed for his
friends; the LORD even gave to Job twice as much as he had before.
[JOB 42:1-3,5-7,9-10] God is a just judge, who rebukes in anger every day. If sinners do not repent, God sharpens his sword, strings and readies the bow,
Prepares his deadly shafts, makes arrows blazing thunderbolts. [PS
7:12-14] But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and
you overlook the sins of men that they may repent. [WISDOM 11:23] Not that you were without power to have the wicked vanquished
in battle by the just, or wiped out at once ... But condemning
them bit by bit, you gave them space for repentance. You were not
unaware that their race was wicked and their malice ingrained, And
that their dispositions would never change; for they were a race
accursed from the beginning. Neither out of fear for anyone did
you grant amnesty for their sins. For who can say to you,
"What have you done?" or who can oppose your decree? Or
when peoples perish, who can challenge you, their maker; or who
can come into your presence as vindicator of unjust men? [Taken
from WISDOM 12:9-12] And you taught your people, by these deeds, that those who are
just must be kind; And you gave your sons good ground for hope
that you would permit repentance for their sins. [WISDOM 12:19] Shame not a repentant sinner; remember, we all are guilty. [SIRACH
8:5] Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned,
show repentance. [SIRACH 18:20] He who hates correction walks the sinner's path, but he who
fears the LORD repents in his heart. [SIRACH 21:6] O Elijah, enveloped in the whirlwind! Then Elisha, filled with
a twofold portion of his spirit, wrought many marvels by his mere
word. During his lifetime he feared no one, nor was any man able
to intimidate his will. Nothing was beyond his power; beneath him
flesh was brought back into life. In life he performed wonders,
and after death, marvelous deeds. Despite all this the people did
not repent, nor did they give up their sins, Until they were
rooted out of their land and scattered all over the earth. But
Judah remained, a tiny people, with its rulers from the house of
David. Some of these did what was right, but others were extremely
sinful. [SIRACH 48:12-16] Zion shall be redeemed by judgment, and her repentant ones by
              justice. [ISA 1:27] For thus says the LORD: Waste shall the whole land be;  I will (not) wholly destroy it. Because of this the earth shall mourn,  the heavens above shall darken;
I have spoken, I will not repent, I have resolved, I will not turn back.
[JER 4:27-28] Why do these people rebel with obstinate resistance? Why do
they cling to deceptive idols, refuse to turn back? I listen
closely: they speak what is not true; No one repents of his
wickedness, saying, "What have I done!" Everyone keeps
on running his course, like a steed dashing into battle. Even the
stork in the air knows it seasons; Turtledove, swallow and thrush
observe their time of return, But my people do not know the
ordinance of the LORD. [JER 8:5-7] Would that I had in the desert a travelers' lodge! That I might
leave my people and depart from them. They are all adulterers, a
faithless band. They ready their tongues like a drawn bow; with
lying, and not with truth, they hold forth in the land. They go
from evil to evil, but me they know not, says the LORD. Be on your
guard, everyone against his neighbor; put no trust in any brother.
Every brother apes Jacob, the supplanter, every friend is guilty
of slander. Each one deceives the other, no one speaks the truth.
They have accustomed their tongues to lying, and are perverse, and
cannot repent. [JER 9:1-4] Thus the LORD answered me: If you repent, so that I restore
you, in my presence you shall stand; If you bring forth the
precious without the vile, you shall be my mouthpiece. Then it
shall be they who turn to you, and you shall not turn to them; And
I will make you toward this people a solid wall of brass. Though
they fight against you, they shall not prevail, For I am with you,
to deliver and rescue you, says the LORD. I will free you from the
hand of the wicked, and rescue you from the grasp of the violent.
[JER 15:19-21] Then the word of the Lord came to me: Can I not do to you,
house of Israel, as this potter has done? says the LORD. Indeed,
like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, house
of Israel. Sometimes I threaten to uproot and tear down and
destroy a nation or a kingdom. But if that nation which I have
threatened turns from its evil, I also repent of the evil which I
threatened to do. Sometimes, again, I promise to build up and
plant a nation or a kingdom. But if that nation does what is evil
in my eyes, refusing to obey my voice, I repent of the good with
which I promised to bless it. And now, tell this to the men of
Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD: Take
care! I am fashioning evil against you and making a plan. Return,
each of you, from his evil way; reform your ways and your deeds.
              But they will say, "No use! We will follow our own devices;
each one of us will behave according to the stubbornness of his
evil heart!" [JER 18:5-12] In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king
of Judah, this message came from the LORD: Thus says the LORD:
Stand in the court of the house of the LORD and speak to the
people of all the cities of Judah who come to worship in the house
of the LORD; whatever I command you, tell them, and omit nothing.
Perhaps they will listen and turn back, each from his evil way, so
that I may repent of the evil I have planned to inflict upon them
for their evil deeds. Say to them: Thus says the LORD: If you
disobey me, not living according to the law I placed before you
and not listening to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I
send you constantly though you do not obey them, I will treat this
house like Shiloh, and make this the city which all the nations of
the earth shall refer to when cursing another. Now the priests,
the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speak these words
in the house of the LORD. When Jeremiah finished speaking all that
the LORD bade him speak to all the people, the priests and
prophets laid hold of him, crying, "You must be put to death!
Why do you prophesy in the name of the LORD: 'This house shall be
like Shiloh,' and 'This city shall be desolate and
deserted'?" And all the people gathered about Jeremiah in the
house of the LORD. When the princes of Judah were informed of
these things, they came up from the king's palace to the house of
the LORD and held court at the New Gate of the house of the LORD.
The priests and prophets said to the princes and to all the
people, "This man deserves death; he has prophesied against
this city, as you have heard with your own ears." Jeremiah
gave this answer to the princes and all the people: "It was
the LORD who sent me to prophesy against this house and city all
that you have heard. Now, therefore, reform your ways and your
deeds; listen to the voice of the LORD your God, so that the LORD
will repent of the evil with which he threatens you. As for me, I
am in your hands; do with me what you think good and right. But
mark well: if you put me to death, it is innocent blood you bring
on yourselves, on this city and its citizens. For in truth it was
the LORD who sent me to you, to speak all these things for you to
hear." Thereupon the princes and all the people said to the
              priests and the prophets, "This man does not deserve death;
it is in the name of the LORD, our God, that he speaks to
us." At this, some of the elders of the land came forward and
said to all the people assembled, "Micah of Moresheth used to
prophesy in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah, and he told all
the people of Judah: Thus says the LORD of hosts: Zion shall
become a plowed field, Jerusalem a heap of ruins, and the temple
mount a forest ridge. Did Hezekiah, king of Judah, and all Judah
condemn him to death? Did they not rather fear the LORD and
entreat the favor of the LORD, so that he repented of the evil
with which he had threatened them? But we are on the point of
committing this great evil to our own undoing." [JER 26:1-19] There is hope for your future, says the LORD; your sons shall
return to their own borders. I hear, I hear Ephraim pleading: You
chastised me, and I am chastened; I was an untamed calf. If you
allow me, I will return, for you are the LORD, my God. I turn in
repentance; I have come to myself, I strike my breast; I blush
with shame, I bear the disgrace of my youth. Is Ephraim not my
favored son, the child in whom I delight? Often as I threaten him,
I still remember him with favor; My heart stirs for him, I must
show him mercy, says the LORD. [JER 31:17-20] Today you indeed repented and did what is right in my eyes by proclaiming the emancipation of your brethren and making an agreement before me in the house that is named after me. But then you changed your mind and profaned my name...
Therefore, thus says the LORD: You did not obey me by proclaiming your neighbors and kinsmen free. I now proclaim you free, says the LORD, for the sword, famine, and pestilence. I will make you an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
[Taken from JER 34:15-17] Because you have sullied yourself with lewdness when I would have purified you, and you refused to be purified of your uncleanness, therefore you shall not be purified until I wreak my fury on you. I, the LORD, have spoken; it is coming, for I will bring it about without fail. I will not have pity nor repent. By your conduct and your deeds you shall be judged, says the Lord GOD.
[EZEK 24:13-14] The sword shall begin with his cities and end by consuming his
solitudes. Because they refused to repent, their own counsels
shall devour them. [HOSEA 11:6] While they were eating all the grass in the land, I said:
Forgive, O Lord GOD! How can Jacob stand? He is so small! And the
LORD repented of this. "It shall not be," said the Lord
GOD. Then the Lord GOD showed me this: he called for a judgment by
fire. It had devoured the great abyss, and was consuming the land,
when I said: Cease, O Lord GOD! How can Jacob stand? He is so
small! The LORD repented of this. "This also shall not
be," said the Lord GOD. [AMOS 7:2-6] The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: "Set out
for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that
I will tell you." So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the LORD'S bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously
large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began his
journey through the city, and had gone but a single day's walk
announcing, "Forty days more and Nineveh shall be
destroyed," when the people of Nineveh believed God; they
proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on
sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from
his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth,
and sat in the ashes. Then he had this proclaimed throughout
Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles: "Neither man
nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep, shall taste anything; they
shall not eat, nor shall they drink water. Man and beast shall be
covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God; every man shall
turn from his evil way and from the violence he has in hand. Who
knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath,
so that we shall not perish." When God saw by their actions
how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that
he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out. [JONAH
3:1-10] In the second year of Darius, in the eighth month, the word of
the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah, son of Berechiah, son of
Iddo: The LORD was indeed angry with your fathers...and say to
them: Thus says the LORD of hosts: Return to me, says the LORD of
hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. Be not
like your fathers whom the former prophets warned: Thus says the
LORD of hosts: Turn from your evil ways and from your wicked
deeds. But they would not listen or pay attention to me, says the
LORD. Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, can they
live forever? But my words and my decrees, which I entrusted to my
servants the prophets, did not these overtake your fathers? Then
they repented and admitted: "The LORD of hosts has treated us
according to our ways and deeds, just as he had determined he
would." [ZECH 1:1-6] In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea (and) saying, "Repent,
for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken
when he said: "A voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.'"
[MT 3:1-3] When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his
baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned
you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence
of your repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We
have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God can raise up
children to Abraham from these stones. Even now the ax lies at the
root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good
fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I am baptizing
you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me
is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in
his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat
into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable
fire." [MT 3:7-12] When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to
Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the
sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been
said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: "Land of
Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the
Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness
have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed
by death light has arisen." From that time on, Jesus began to
preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at
hand." [MT 4:12-17] Then he began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty
deeds had been done, since they had not repented. "Woe to
you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done
in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago
have repented in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be
more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for
you. And as for you, Capernaum: 'Will you be exalted to heaven?
You will go down to the netherworld.' For if the mighty deeds done
in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until
this day. But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land
of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you." [MT 11:20-24] At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this
generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching
of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here. [MT
12:41] As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "Behold, I am
sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A
voice of one crying out in the desert: 'Prepare the way of the
Lord, make straight his paths.'" John (the) Baptist appeared
in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the
forgiveness of sins. [MK 1:2-4] After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." [MK
1:14-15] He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two
and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them
to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick - no food, no
sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals
but not a second tunic. He said to them, "Wherever you enter
a house, stay there until you leave from there. Whatever place
does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the
dust off your feet in testimony against them." So they went
off and preached repentance. They drove out many demons, and they
anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. [MK 6:7-13] In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when
Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of
Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea
and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the
high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to
John the son of Zechariah in the desert. He went throughout (the)
whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance
for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the
words of the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one crying out in
the desert: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.
Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be
made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough
ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of
God.'" He said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by
him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the
              coming wrath? Produce good fruits as evidence of your repentance;
and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our
father,' for I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from
these stones. Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees.
Therefore every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut
down and thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him,
"What then should we do?" He said to them in reply,
"Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has
none. And whoever has food should do likewise." Even tax
collectors came to be baptized and they said to him,
"Teacher, what should we do?" He answered them,
"Stop collecting more than what is prescribed." Soldiers
also asked him, "And what is it that we should do?" He
told them, "Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse
anyone, and be satisfied with your wages." Now the people
were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts
whether John might be the Messiah. John answered them all, saying,
"I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is
coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He
will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan
is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the
wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable
fire." [LK 3:1-17] Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and a
large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them.
The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples,
saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and
sinners?" Jesus said to them in reply, "Those who are
healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. I have not come
to call the righteous to repentance but sinners." [LK 5:29-32] "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you."
[LK 10:13-14] At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this
generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they
repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here. [LK
11:32] He said to them in reply, "Do you think that because these
Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all
other Galileans? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not
repent, you will all perish as they did! Or those eighteen people
who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them - do you
think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in
Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you
will all perish as they did!" [LK 13:2-5] "What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one
of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after
the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets
it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he
calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them,
'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you,
in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one
sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have
no need of repentance. Or what woman having ten coins and losing
one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching
carefully until she finds it? And when she does find it, she calls
together her friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with
me because I have found the coin that I lost.' In just the same
way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God
over one sinner who repents." [LK 15:4-10] "There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and
fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door
was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly
have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's
table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor
man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld,
where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far
off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father Abraham,
have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in
water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these
flames.' Abraham replied, 'My child, remember that you received
what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received
what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are
tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is
established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go
from our side to yours or from your side to ours.' He said, 'Then
I beg you, father, send him to my father's house, for I have five
brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this
place of torment.' But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the
prophets. Let them listen to them.' He said, 'Oh no, father
Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will
repent.' Then Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and
the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should
rise from the dead.'" [LK 16:19-31] [Jesus said,] "Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, 'I am sorry,' you should forgive him."
[Taken from LK 17:3-4] Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things."
[LK 24:45-48] "Therefore let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified." Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, "What are we to do, my brothers?" Peter (said) to them, "Repent and be baptized,
every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call."
[ACTS 2:36-39] Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be
wiped away, and that the Lord may grant you times of refreshment
and send you the Messiah already appointed for you, Jesus, whom
heaven must receive until the times of universal restoration of
which God spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of
old. For Moses said: 'A prophet like me will the Lord, your God,
raise up for you from among your own kinsmen; to him you shall
listen in all that he may say to you. Everyone who does not listen
to that prophet will be cut off from the people.' [ACTS 3:19-23] "The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand
as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins. We are witnesses of these things, as is the
Holy Spirit that God has given to those who obey him." [ACTS 5:30-32] When Simon saw that the Spirit was conferred by the laying on
of the apostles' hands, he offered them money and said, "Give
me this power too, so that anyone upon whom I lay my hands may
receive the Holy Spirit." But Peter said to him, "May
your money perish with you, because you thought that you could buy
the gift of God with money. You have no share or lot in this
matter, for your heart is not upright before God. Repent of this
wickedness of yours and pray to the Lord that, if possible, your
intention may be forgiven. For I see that you are filled with
bitter gall and are in the bonds of iniquity." [ACTS 8:18-23] "He related to us how he had seen (the) angel standing in
his house, saying, 'Send someone to Joppa and summon Simon, who is
called Peter, who will speak words to you by which you and all
your household will be saved.' As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit
fell upon them as it had upon us at the beginning, and I
remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, 'John baptized
with water but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' If then
God gave them the same gift he gave to us when we came to believe
in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to be able to hinder
God?" When they heard this, they stopped objecting and
glorified God, saying, "God has then granted life-giving
repentance to the Gentiles too." [ACTS 11:13-18] So Paul got up, motioned with his hand, and said, "Fellow
Israelites and you others who are God-fearing, listen. The God of
this people Israel chose our ancestors and exalted the people
during their sojourn in the land of Egypt. With uplifted arm he
led them out of it and for about forty years he put up with them
in the desert. When he had destroyed seven nations in the land of
Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance at the end of
about four hundred and fifty years. After these things he provided
judges up to Samuel (the) prophet. Then they asked for a king. God
gave them Saul, son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for
forty years. Then he removed him and raised up David as their
king; of him he testified, 'I have found David, son of Jesse, a
man after my own heart; he will carry out my every wish.' From
this man's descendants God, according to his promise, has brought
to Israel a savior, Jesus. John heralded his coming by proclaiming
a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel; and as John
was completing his course, he would say, 'What do you suppose that
I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy
to unfasten the sandals of his feet.'" [ACTS 13:16-25] "God has overlooked the times of ignorance, but now he demands that all people everywhere repent because he has established a day on which he will 'judge the world with justice' through a man he has appointed, and he has provided confirmation for all by raising him from the dead."
[ACTS 17:30-31] While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the
interior of the country and came (down) to Ephesus where he found
some disciples. He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit
when you became believers?" They answered him, "We have
never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." He said,
"How were you baptized?" They replied, "With the
baptism of John." Paul then said, "John baptized with a
baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one
who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." When they
heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And
when Paul laid (his) hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon
them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. Altogether there
were about twelve men. [ACTS 19:1-7] I earnestly bore witness for both Jews and Greeks to repentance
before God and to faith in our Lord Jesus. [ACTS 20:21] "And so, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the
heavenly vision. On the contrary, first to those in Damascus and
in Jerusalem and throughout the whole country of Judea, and then
to the Gentiles, I preached the need to repent and turn to God,
and to do works giving evidence of repentance. That is why the
Jews seized me (when I was) in the temple and tried to kill me.
But I have enjoyed God's help to this very day, and so I stand
here testifying to small and great alike, saying nothing different
from what the prophets and Moses foretold, that the Messiah must
suffer and that, as the first to rise from the dead, he would
proclaim light both to our people and to the Gentiles." [ACTS
26:19-23] Do you suppose, then, you who judge those who engage in such
things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape the judgment
of God? Or do you hold his priceless kindness, forbearance, and
patience in low esteem, unaware that the kindness of God would
lead you to repentance? By your stubbornness and impenitent heart,
you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and
revelation of the just judgment of God, who will repay everyone
according to his works: eternal life to those who seek glory,
honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works, but
wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey
wickedness. [ROM 2:3-8] For even if I saddened you by my letter, I do not regret it; and if I did regret it ((for) I see that that letter saddened you, if only for a while), I rejoice now, not because you were saddened, but because you were saddened into repentance; for you were saddened in a godly way, so that you did not suffer loss in anything because of us. For godly sorrow produces a salutary repentance without regret, but worldly sorrow produces death.
[2COR 7:8-10] I fear that when I come again my God may humiliate me before
you, and I may have to mourn over many of those who sinned earlier
and have not repented of the impurity, immorality, and
licentiousness they practiced. [2COR 12:21] Avoid foolish and ignorant debates, for you know that they breed quarrels. A slave of the Lord should not quarrel, but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant, correcting opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant them repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth, and that they may return to their senses out of the devil's snare, where they are entrapped by him, for his will.
[2TM 2:23-26] Therefore, let us leave behind the basic teaching about Christ
and advance to maturity, without laying the foundation all over
again: repentance from dead works and faith in God, instruction
about baptisms and laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead
and eternal judgment. And we shall do this, if only God permits.
For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been
enlightened and tasted the heavenly gift and shared in the Holy Spirit
and tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,
and then have fallen away, to bring them to repentance again,
since they are recrucifying the Son of God for themselves and
holding him up to contempt. Ground that has absorbed the rain
falling upon it repeatedly and brings forth crops useful to those
for whom it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. But if it
produces thorns and thistles, it is rejected; it will soon be
cursed and finally burned. [HEB 6:1-8] On the one hand, a former commandment is annulled because of
its weakness and uselessness, for the law brought nothing to
perfection; on the other hand, a better hope is introduced,
through which we draw near to God. And to the degree that this
happened not without the taking of an oath - for others became
priests without an oath, but he with an oath, through the one who
said to him: "The Lord has sworn, and he will not repent:
'You are a priest forever'" - to that same degree has Jesus
(also) become the guarantee of an (even) better covenant. [HEB 7:18-22] But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard "delay," but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief,
and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out.
[2PT 3:8-10] Realize how far you have fallen. Repent, and do the works you
did at first. Otherwise, I will come to you and remove your
lampstand from its place, unless you repent. [RV 2:5] Therefore, repent. Otherwise, I will come to you quickly and
wage war against them with the sword of my mouth. [RV 2:16] I have given her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of
her harlotry. So I will cast her on a sickbed and plunge those who commit
adultery with her into intense suffering unless they repent of her
works. [RV 2:21-22] "To the angel of the church in Sardis, write this: 'The one who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars says this: "I know your works, that you have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Be watchful and strengthen what is left, which is going to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.
Remember then how you accepted and heard; keep it, and repent. If you are not watchful, I will come like a thief, and you will never know at what hour I will come upon you."'"
[RV 3:1-3] Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest,
therefore, and repent. [RV 3:19] Now in my vision this is how I saw the horses and their riders.
They wore red, blue, and yellow breastplates, and the horses'
heads were like heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire,
smoke, and sulfur. By these three plagues of fire, smoke, and
sulfur that came out of their mouths a third of the human race was
killed. For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in
their tails; for their tails are like snakes, with heads that
inflict harm. The rest of the human race, who were not killed by
these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, to give
up the worship of demons and idols made from gold, silver, bronze,
stone, and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk. Nor did they
repent of their murders, their magic potions, their unchastity, or
their robberies. [RV 9:17-21] People were burned by the scorching heat and blasphemed the name of God who had power over these plagues, but they did not repent or give him glory. The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast.
Its kingdom was plunged into darkness, and people bit their tongues in pain and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores. But they did not repent of their works.
