Abram put his faith in the LORD, who credited it to him as an
act of righteousness. [GEN 15:6]
I, Tobit, have walked all the days of my life on the paths of
truth and righteousness. I performed many charitable works for my
kinsmen and my people who had been deported with me to Nineveh, in
Assyria. [TOBIT 1:3]
"You are righteous, O Lord, and all your deeds are just;
All your ways are mercy and truth; you are the judge of the world."
[TOBIT 3:2]
But when he heard that Tobit had lost his eyesight, he was
grieved and wept aloud. He said to Tobiah: "My child, God
bless you! You are the son of a noble and good father. But what a
terrible misfortune that such a righteous and charitable man
should be afflicted with blindness!" He continued to weep in
the arms of his kinsman Tobiah. [TOBIT 7:7]
Prayer and fasting are good, but better than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than abundance with wickedness. It is better to give alms than to store up gold; for almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin. Those who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life; but those habitually guilty of sin are their own worst enemies.
[TOBIT 12:8-10]
When you turn back to him with all your heart, to do what is
right before him, Then he will turn back to you, and no longer
hide his face from you. So now consider what he has done for you,
and praise him with full voice. Bless the Lord of righteousness,
and exalt the King of the ages. In the land of my exile I praise
him, and show his power and majesty to a sinful nation. "Turn
back, you sinners! do the right before him: perhaps he may look
with favor upon you and show you mercy." [TOBIT 13:6]
O Jerusalem, holy city, he scourged you for the works of your
hands, but will again pity the children of the righteous. [TOBIT
13:9]
Go, then, rejoice over the children of the righteous, who shall
all be gathered together and shall bless the Lord of the ages. [TOBIT
13:13]
All the nations of the world shall be converted and shall offer God true worship; all shall abandon their idols which have deceitfully led them into error, and shall bless the God of the ages in righteousness. Because all the Israelites who are to be saved in those days will truly be mindful of God, they shall be gathered together and go to Jerusalem; in security shall they dwell forever in the land of Abraham, which will be given over to them. Those who sincerely love God shall rejoice, but those who become guilty of sin shall completely disappear from the land.
[TOBIT 14:6-7]
Many who sought to live according to righteousness and religious custom went out into the desert to settle there, they and their sons, their wives and their cattle, because misfortunes pressed so hard on them. [1MACC
2:29-30]
"Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be
blameless against his Maker?" [JOB 4:17]
If I should be wicked, alas for me! if righteous, I dare not
hold up my head, filled with ignominy and sodden with affliction!
[JOB 10:15]
What is a man that he should be blameless, one born of woman
that he should be righteous? [JOB 15:14]
Yet the righteous shall hold to his way, and he who has clean
hands increase in strength. [JOB 17:9]
Then the three men ceased to answer Job, because he was
righteous in his own eyes. [JOB 32:1]
The LORD acknowledged my righteousness, rewarded my clean
hands. [PS 18:21]
So the LORD rewarded my righteousness, the cleanness of my
hands in his sight. [PS 18:25]
Now God will strike you down, leave you crushed forever, Pluck you from your tent, uproot you from the land of the living.
The righteous will look on with awe; they will jeer and say: "That one did not take God as a refuge, but trusted in great wealth, relied on devious plots." [Taken
from PS 52:7-9]
Cast your care upon the LORD, who will give you support. God
will never allow the righteous to stumble. [PS 55:23]
The LORD does righteous deeds, brings justice to all the
oppressed. [PS 103:6]
They provoked him by their actions, and a plague broke out among them. Then Phinehas rose to intervene, and the plague was brought to a halt. This was counted for him as a righteous deed for all generations to come. [PS
106:29-31]
You are righteous, LORD, and just are your edicts. [PS 119:137]
Happy those whose help is Jacob's God, whose hope is in the LORD, their God, The maker of heaven and earth, the seas and all that is in them, Who keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free;
the LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. [PS
146:5-8]
Through the blessing of the righteous the city is exalted, but
through the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown. [PROV 11:11]
Kings have a horror of wrongdoing, for by righteousness the
throne endures. [PROV 16:12]
The wicked man serves as ransom for the just, and the faithless
man for the righteous. [PROV 21:18]
Remove the wicked from the presence of the king, and his throne
is made firm through righteousness. [PROV 25:5]
Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise
up a righteous shoot to David; As king he shall reign and govern
wisely, he shall do what is just and right in the land. [JER 23:5]
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to
Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the
Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the
Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins." [MT 1:18-21]
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him. [MT
3:13-15]
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for
they will be satisfied. [MT 5:6]
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of
righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [MT 5:10]
I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the
scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the kingdom of
heaven. [MT 5:20]
"(But) take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you."
[MT
6:1-4]
"So do not worry and say, 'What are we to eat?' or 'What are we to drink?' or 'What are we to wear?' All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given you besides." [MT 6:31-33]
"Go and learn the meaning of the words, 'I desire mercy, not
sacrifice.' I did not come to call the righteous but
sinners." [MT 9:13]
Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive
a prophet's reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because
he is righteous will receive a righteous man's reward. [MT 10:41]
"But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it."
[MT 13:16-17]
Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. His
disciples approached him and said, "Explain to us the parable
of the weeds in the field." He said in reply, "He who
sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good
seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of
the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The
harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Just
as weeds are collected and burned (up) with fire, so will it be at
the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they
will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and
all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where
there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous
will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever
has ears ought to hear." [MT 13:36-43]
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the
sea... When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous
and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
[Taken from MT 13:47-50]
When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not
believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when
you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.
[MT 21:32]
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You
are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside,
but inside are full of dead men's bones and every kind of filth.
Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are
filled with hypocrisy and evildoing. Woe to you, scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and
adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, 'If we had
lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them
in shedding the prophets' blood.' Thus you bear witness against
yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the
prophets; now fill up what your ancestors measured out! You
serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you flee from the judgment
of Gehenna? Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men
and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, some of them
you will scourge in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,
so that there may come upon you all the righteous blood shed upon
earth, from the righteous blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah,
the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and
the altar. Amen, I say to you, all these things will come upon
this generation." [MT 23:27-36]
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the
angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the
nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them
one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the
goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his
left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who
are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you
from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me
food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you
welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me,
in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer him
and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or
thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and
welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or
in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply,
'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least
brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to those on
his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire
prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you
gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a
stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no
clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' Then
they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or
thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not
minister to your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you,
what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do
for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the
righteous to eternal life." [MT 25:31-46]
Now on the occasion of the feast the governor was accustomed to
release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished. And at that
time they had a notorious prisoner called (Jesus) Barabbas. So
when they had assembled, Pilate said to them, "Which one do
you want me to release to you, (Jesus) Barabbas, or Jesus called
Messiah?" For he knew that it was out of envy that they had
handed him over. While he was still seated on the bench, his wife
sent him a message, "Have nothing to do with that righteous
man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him." [MT
27:15-19]
Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors and said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" Jesus heard this and said to them (that), "Those who are well do not need a physician,
but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners." [MK
2:16-17]
Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man,
and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much
perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. [MK 6:20]
In the days of Herod, King of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah of the priestly division of
Abijah; his wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both were righteous in the eyes of God, observing all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.
[LK 1:5-6]
Zechariah was troubled by what he saw, and fear came upon him.
But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah,
because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear
you a son, and you shall name him John. And you will have joy and
gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great
in the sight of (the) Lord. He will drink neither wine nor strong
drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his
mother's womb, and he will turn many of the children of Israel to
the Lord their God. He will go before him in the spirit and power
of Elijah to turn the hearts of fathers toward children and the
disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to prepare a
people fit for the Lord." [LK 1:12-17]
Then Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit,
prophesied, saying: "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
for he has visited and brought redemption to his people. He has
raised up a horn for our salvation within the house of David his
servant, even as he promised through the mouth of his holy
prophets from of old: salvation from our enemies and from the hand
of all who hate us, to show mercy to our fathers and to be mindful
of his holy covenant and of the oath he swore to Abraham our
father, and to grant us that, rescued from the hand of enemies,
without fear we might worship him in holiness and righteousness
before him all our days." [LK 1:67-75]
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This
man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel,
and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by
the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen
the Messiah of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple;
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the
custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and
blessed God, saying: "Now, Master, you may let your servant
go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your
salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light
for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people
Israel." [LK 2:25-32]
The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" Jesus said to them in reply, "Those who are healthy do not
need a physician, but the sick do. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners."
[LK 5:30-32]
"I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." (All the people who listened, including the tax collectors, and who were baptized with the baptism of John, acknowledged the righteousness of God; but the Pharisees and scholars of the law, who were not baptized by him, rejected the plan of God for themselves.)
[LK 7:28-30]
Then he said to the host who invited him, "When you
hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your
brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they
may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the
crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to
repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the
righteous." [LK 14:12-14]
I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in
heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous
people who have no need of repentance. [LK 15:7]
He then addressed this parable to those who were convinced of
their own righteousness and despised everyone else. "Two
people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and
the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position
and spoke this prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am
not like the rest of humanity - greedy, dishonest, adulterous - or
even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay
tithes on my whole income.' But the tax collector stood off at a
distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his
breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' I tell
you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone
who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles
himself will be exalted." [LK 18:9-14]
They watched him closely and sent agents pretending to be
righteous who were to trap him in speech, in order to hand him
over to the authority and power of the governor. [LK 20:20]
Now there was a virtuous and righteous man named Joseph who, though he was a member of the council, had not consented to their plan of action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea and was awaiting the kingdom of God. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. After he had taken the body down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb in which no one had yet been buried.
[LK 23:50-53]
But now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you
asks me, 'Where are you going?' But because I told you this, grief
has filled your hearts. But I tell you the truth, it is better for
you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to
you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes he
will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and
condemnation: sin, because they do not believe in me;
righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no
longer see me; condemnation, because the ruler of this world has
been condemned. [Taken from JN 16:5-11]
"Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me. I made known to them your name and I will make it known,
that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them."
[JN 17:25-26]
As he clung to Peter and John, all the people hurried in
amazement toward them in the portico called "Solomon's
Portico." When Peter saw this, he addressed the people,
"You Israelites, why are you amazed at this, and why do you
look so intently at us as if we had made him walk by our own power
or piety? The God of Abraham, (the God) of Isaac, and (the God) of
Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his servant Jesus
whom you handed over and denied in Pilate's presence, when he had
decided to release him. You denied the Holy and Righteous One and
asked that a murderer be released to you. The author of life you
put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are
witnesses." [ACTS 3:11-15]
Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They
put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one,
whose betrayers and murderers you have now become. [ACTS 7:52]
"A certain Ananias, a devout observer of the law, and
highly spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, came to me and
stood there and said, 'Saul, my brother, regain your sight.' And
at that very moment I regained my sight and saw him. Then he said,
'The God of our ancestors designated you to know his will, to see
the Righteous One, and to hear the sound of his voice; for you
will be his witness before all to what you have seen and heard.
Now, why delay? Get up and have yourself baptized and your sins
washed away, calling upon his name.'" [ACTS 22:12-16]
Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He had Paul summoned and listened to him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. But as he spoke about righteousness and self-restraint and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened and said, "You may go for now; when I find an opportunity I shall summon you again." At the same time he hoped that a bribe would be offered him by Paul, and so he sent for him very often and conversed with him. [ACTS
24:24-26]
For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: for Jew first, and then Greek.
For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith;
as it is written, "The one who is righteous by faith will live." [ROM
1:16-17]
What advantage is there then in being a Jew? Or what is the
value of circumcision? Much, in every respect. (For) in the first
place, they were entrusted with the utterances of God. What if
some were unfaithful? Will their infidelity nullify the fidelity
of God? Of course not! God must be true, though every human being
is a liar, as it is written: "That you may be justified in
your words, and conquer when you are judged." But if our
wickedness provides proof of God's righteousness, what can we say?
Is God unjust, humanly speaking, to inflict his wrath? Of course
not! For how else is God to judge the world? But if God's truth
redounds to his glory through my falsehood, why am I still being
condemned as a sinner? And why not say - as we are accused and as
some claim we say - that we should do evil that good may come of
it? Their penalty is what they deserve. [ROM 3:1-8]
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from
the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets, the
righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who
believe. For there is no distinction; all have sinned and are
deprived of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his
grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth
as an expiation, through faith, by his blood, to prove his
righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously
committed, through the forbearance of God - to prove his
righteousness in the present time, that he might be righteous and
justify the one who has faith in Jesus. [ROM 3:21-26]
What then can we say that Abraham found, our ancestor according
to the flesh? Indeed, if Abraham was justified on the basis of his
works, he has reason to boast; but this was not so in the sight of
God. For what does the scripture say? "Abraham believed God,
and it was credited to him as righteousness." A worker's wage
is credited not as a gift, but as something due. But when one does
not work, yet believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his
faith is credited as righteousness. So also David declares the
blessedness of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart
from works: "Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven
and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord
does not record." Does this blessedness apply only to the
circumcised, or to the uncircumcised as well? Now we assert that
"faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness." Under
what circumstances was it credited? Was he circumcised or not? He
was not circumcised, but uncircumcised. And he received the sign
of circumcision as a seal on the righteousness received through
faith while he was uncircumcised. Thus he was to be the father of
all the uncircumcised who believe, so that to them (also)
righteousness might be credited, as well as the father of the
circumcised who not only are circumcised, but also follow the path
of faith that our father Abraham walked while still uncircumcised.
It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham
and his descendants that he would inherit the world, but through
the righteousness that comes from faith. He believed, hoping
against hope, that he would become "the father of many
nations," according to what was said, "Thus shall your
descendants be." He did not weaken in faith when he
considered his own body as (already) dead (for he was almost a
hundred years old) and the dead womb of Sarah. He did not doubt
God's promise in unbelief; rather, he was empowered by faith and
gave glory to God and was fully convinced that what he had
promised he was also able to do. That is why "it was credited
to him as righteousness." [ROM 4:1-13,18-22]
But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by that one
person's transgression the many died, how much more did the grace
of God and the gracious gift of the one person Jesus Christ
overflow for the many. And the gift is not like the result of the
one person's sinning. For after one sin there was the judgment
that brought condemnation; but the gift, after many
transgressions, brought acquittal. For if, by the transgression of
one person, death came to reign through that one, how much more
will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of
justification come to reign in life through the one person Jesus
Christ. In conclusion, just as through one transgression
condemnation came upon all, so through one righteous act acquittal
and life came to all. For just as through the disobedience of one
person the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of one
the many will be made righteous. [ROM 5:15-19]
Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as (being) dead
to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, sin must not
reign over your mortal bodies so that you obey their desires. And
do not present the parts of your bodies to sin as weapons for
wickedness, but present yourselves to God as raised from the dead
to life and the parts of your bodies to God as weapons for
righteousness. For sin is not to have any power over you, since
you are not under the law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin
because we are not under the law but under grace? Of course not!
Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as
obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of
sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to
righteousness? But thanks be to God that, although you were once
slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the heart to the
pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted. Freed from sin,
you have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human
terms because of the weakness of your nature. For just as you
presented the parts of your bodies as slaves to impurity and to
lawlessness for lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to
righteousness for sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin,
you were free from righteousness. But what profit did you get then
from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those
things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and
have become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to
sanctification, and its end is eternal life. For the wages of sin
is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord. [ROM 6:11-23]
I once lived outside the law, but when the commandment came, sin became alive; then I died, and the commandment that was for life turned out to be death for me. For sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and through it put me to death. So then the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
[ROM 7:9-12]
For what the law, weakened by the flesh, was powerless to do,
this God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of
sinful flesh and for the sake of sin, he condemned sin in the
flesh, so that the righteous decree of the law might be fulfilled
in us, who live not according to the flesh but according to the
spirit. For those who live according to the flesh are concerned
with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the
spirit with the things of the spirit. The concern of the flesh is
death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace. For the
concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit
to the law of God, nor can it; and those who are in the flesh
cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary,
you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin,
the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the
one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who
raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies
also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently,
brothers, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to
the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die,
but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you
will live. [ROM 8:3-13]
What then shall we say? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have achieved it, that is, righteousness that comes from faith; but that Israel, who pursued the law of righteousness, did not attain to that law? Why not? Because they did it not by faith, but as if it could be done by works. They stumbled over the stone that causes
stumbling [Taken from ROM 9:30-32]
I testify with regard to them that they have zeal for God, but
it is not discerning. For, in their unawareness of the
righteousness that comes from God and their attempt to establish
their own (righteousness), they did not submit to the
righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for the
justification of everyone who has faith. Moses writes about the
righteousness that comes from (the) law, "The one who does
these things will live by them." But the righteousness that
comes from faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will
go up into heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ down) or 'Who will
go down into the abyss?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the
dead)." But what does it say? "The word is near you, in
your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith
that we preach), for, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is
Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is
justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. For
the scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be put
to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek;
the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him. For
"everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be
saved." But how can they call on him in whom they have not
believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not
heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how
can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written,
"How beautiful are the feet of those who bring (the) good
news!" [ROM 10:2-15]
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of food and drink, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the
Holy Spirit; whoever serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by others.
[ROM 14:17-18]
Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of you were wise
by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble
birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the
wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and
God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for
nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no
human being might boast before God. It is due to him that you are
in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as
righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, so that, as it is
written, "Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord." [1COR
1:26-31]
Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, was
so glorious that the Israelites could not look intently at the
face of Moses because of its glory that was going to fade, how
much more will the ministry of the Spirit be glorious? For if the
ministry of condemnation was glorious, the ministry of
righteousness will abound much more in glory. Indeed, what was
endowed with glory has come to have no glory in this respect
because of the glory that surpasses it. For if what was going to
fade was glorious, how much more will what endures be glorious. [2COR
3:7-11]
So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have
passed away; behold, new things have come. And all this is from
God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and given us
the ministry of reconciliation, namely, God was reconciling the
world to himself in Christ, not counting their trespasses against
them and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we are
ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We
implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our
sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might
become the righteousness of God in him. [2COR 5:17-21]
We cause no one to stumble in anything, in order that no fault
may be found with our ministry; on the contrary, in everything we
commend ourselves as ministers of God, through much endurance, in
afflictions, hardships, constraints, beatings, imprisonments,
riots, labors, vigils, fasts; by purity, knowledge, patience,
kindness, in a holy spirit, in unfeigned love, in truthful speech,
in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness at the right
and at the left; through glory and dishonor, insult and praise. We
are treated as deceivers and yet are truthful; as unrecognized and
yet acknowledged; as dying and behold we live; as chastised and
yet not put to death; as sorrowful yet always rejoicing; as poor
yet enriching many; as having nothing and yet possessing all
things. [2COR 6:3-10]
Do not be yoked with those who are different, with unbelievers. For what partnership do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? What accord has Christ with Beliar? Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?
[2COR 6:14-15]
Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work.
As it is written: "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever."
The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
[2COR 9:8-10]
And what I do I will continue to do, in order to end this pretext of those who seek a pretext for being regarded as we are in the mission of which they boast. For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, who masquerade as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light. So it is not strange that his ministers also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
[2COR 11:12-15]
Thus Abraham "believed God, and it was credited to him as
righteousness." Realize then that it is those who have faith
who are children of Abraham. Scripture, which saw in advance that
God would justify the Gentiles by faith, foretold the good news to
Abraham, saying, "Through you shall all the nations be
blessed." Consequently, those who have faith are blessed
along with Abraham who had faith. For all who depend on works of
the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed be
everyone who does not persevere in doing all the things written in
the book of the law." And that no one is justified before God
by the law is clear, for "the one who is righteous by faith
will live." [GAL 3:6-11]
Is the law then opposed to the promises (of God)? Of course not! For if a law had been given that could bring life, then righteousness would in reality come from the law. But scripture confined all things under the power of sin, that through faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
[GAL 3:21-22]
It is I, Paul, who am telling you that if you have yourselves
circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. Once again I
declare to every man who has himself circumcised that he is bound
to observe the entire law. You are separated from Christ, you who
are trying to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For
through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness.
For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision
counts for anything, but only faith working through love. [GAL 5:2-6]
So I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer
live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; darkened
in understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their
ignorance, because of their hardness of heart, they have become
callous and have handed themselves over to licentiousness for the
practice of every kind of impurity to excess. That is not how you
learned Christ, assuming that you have heard of him and were
taught in him, as truth is in Jesus, that you should put away the
old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful
desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on
the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness
of truth. Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each
one to his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry
but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger, and do not
leave room for the devil. [EPH 4:17-27]
Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of
these things the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient. So
do not be associated with them. For you were once darkness, but
now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for
light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.
Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the
fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is
shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but
everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything
that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: "Awake, O
sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you
light." [EPH 5:6-14]
Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to
resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your
ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed
with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in
readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold
faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming arrows of the evil
one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God. [EPH 6:13-17]
And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.
[PHIL 1:9-11]
Beware of the dogs! Beware of the evil workers! Beware of the
mutilation! For we are the circumcision, we who worship through
the Spirit of God, who boast in Christ Jesus and do not put our
confidence in flesh, although I myself have grounds for confidence
even in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he can be confident in
flesh, all the more can I. Circumcised on the eighth day, of the
race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrew
parentage, in observance of the law a Pharisee, in zeal I
persecuted the church, in righteousness based on the law I was
blameless. (But) whatever gains I had, these I have come to
consider a loss because of Christ. More than that, I even consider
everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ
Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things
and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be
found in him, not having any righteousness of my own based on the
law but that which comes through faith in Christ, the
righteousness from God, depending on faith to know him and the
power of his resurrection and (the) sharing of his sufferings by
being conformed to his death, if somehow I may attain the
resurrection from the dead. [PHIL 3:2-11]
I repeat the request I made of you when I was on my way to
Macedonia, that you stay in Ephesus to instruct certain people not
to teach false doctrines or to concern themselves with myths and
endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the
plan of God that is to be received by faith. The aim of this
instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a
sincere faith. Some people have deviated from these and turned to
meaningless talk, wanting to be teachers of the law, but without
understanding either what they are saying or what they assert with
such assurance. We know that the law is good, provided that one
uses it as law, with the understanding that law is meant not for a
righteous person but for the lawless and unruly, the godless and
sinful, the unholy and profane, those who kill their fathers or
mothers, murderers, the unchaste, practicing homosexuals,
kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to sound
teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God,
with which I have been entrusted. [1TM 1:3-11]
Whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the
sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the religious teaching is
conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid disposition for
arguments and verbal disputes. From these come envy, rivalry,
insults, evil suspicions, and mutual friction among people with
corrupted minds, who are deprived of the truth, supposing religion
to be a means of gain. Indeed, religion with contentment is a
great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, just as we
shall not be able to take anything out of it. If we have food and
clothing, we shall be content with that. Those who want to be rich
are falling into temptation and into a trap and into many foolish
and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction.
For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in
their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced
themselves with many pains. But you, man of God, avoid all this.
Instead, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience,
and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal
life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession
in the presence of many witnesses. [1TM 6:3-12]
Be eager to present yourself as acceptable to God, a workman
who causes no disgrace, imparting the word of truth without
deviation. Avoid profane, idle talk, for such people will become
more and more godless, and their teaching will spread like
gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have deviated
from the truth by saying that (the) resurrection has already taken
place and are upsetting the faith of some. Nevertheless, God's
solid foundation stands, bearing this inscription, "The Lord
knows those who are his"; and, "Let everyone who calls
upon the name of the Lord avoid evil." In a large household
there are vessels not only of gold and silver but also of wood and
clay, some for lofty and others for humble use. If anyone cleanses
himself of these things, he will be a vessel for lofty use,
dedicated, beneficial to the master of the house, ready for every
good work. So turn from youthful desires and pursue righteousness,
faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord with
purity of heart. Avoid foolish and ignorant debates, for you know
that they breed quarrels. A slave of the Lord should not quarrel,
but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant,
correcting opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant
them repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth, and that
they may return to their senses out of the devil's snare, where
they are entrapped by him, for his will. [2TM 2:15-26]
All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
[2TM 3:16-17]
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who
will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his
kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is
convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through
all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will
not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and
insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop
listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. But you, be
self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform
the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry. For I am already
being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is
at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have
kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me,
which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and
not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. [2TM
4:1-8]
Remind them to be under the control of magistrates and
authorities, to be obedient, to be open to every good enterprise.
They are to slander no one, to be peaceable, considerate,
exercising all graciousness toward everyone. For we ourselves were
once foolish, disobedient, deluded, slaves to various desires and
pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful ourselves and hating
one another. But when the kindness and generous love of God our
savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done
but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth
and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us
through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by
his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. his saying is
trustworthy. I want you to insist on these points, that those who
have believed in God be careful to devote themselves to good
works; these are excellent and beneficial to others. Avoid foolish
arguments, genealogies, rivalries, and quarrels about the law, for
they are useless and futile. After a first and second warning,
break off contact with a heretic, realizing that such a person is
perverted and sinful and stands self-condemned. [TI 3:1-11]
Of the angels he says: "He makes his angels winds and his
ministers a fiery flame"; but of the Son: "Your throne,
O God, stands forever and ever; and a righteous scepter is the
scepter of your kingdom. You loved justice and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, anointed you with the oil of gladness
above your companions"; and: "At the beginning, O Lord,
you established the earth, and the heavens are the works of your
hands. They will perish, but you remain; and they will all grow
old like a garment. You will roll them up like a cloak, and like a
garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years
will have no end." [HEB 1:7-12]
About this we have much to say, and it is difficult to explain, for you have become sluggish in hearing. Although you should be teachers by this time, you need to have someone teach you again the basic elements of the utterances of God. You need milk, (and) not solid food. Everyone who lives on milk lacks experience of the word of righteousness, for he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those whose faculties are trained by practice to discern good and evil.
[HEB 5:11-14]
This "Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most
High," "met Abraham as he returned from his defeat of the kings" and "blessed him." And Abraham apportioned to him "a tenth of everything." His name first means righteous king, and he was also "king of Salem," that is, king of peace. Without father, mother, or ancestry, without beginning of days or end of life,
thus made to resemble the Son of God, he remains a priest forever. See how great he is to whom the patriarch "Abraham (indeed) gave a tenth" of his spoils.
[HEB 7:1-4]
By faith Abel offered to God a sacrifice greater than Cain's.
Through this he was attested to be righteous, God bearing witness
to his gifts, and through this, though dead, he still speaks. [HEB
11:4]
By faith Noah, warned about what was not yet seen, with
reverence built an ark for the salvation of his household. Through
this he condemned the world and inherited the righteousness that
comes through faith. [HEB 11:7]
What more shall I say? I have not time to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, who by faith conquered kingdoms, did what was righteous, obtained the promises; they closed the mouths of lions, put out raging fires, escaped the devouring sword; out of weakness they were made powerful, became strong in battle, and turned back foreign invaders.
[HEB 11:32-34]
Endure your trials as "discipline"; God treats you as
sons. For what "son" is there whom his father does not
discipline? If you are without discipline, in which all have
shared, you are not sons but bastards. Besides this, we have had
our earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them.
Should we not (then) submit all the more to the Father of spirits
and live? They disciplined us for a short time as seemed right to
them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we may share
his holiness. At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for
joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of
righteousness to those who are trained by it. [HEB 12:7-11]
Know this, my dear brothers: everyone should be quick to hear,
slow to speak, slow to wrath, for the wrath of a man does not
accomplish the righteousness of God. Therefore, put away all filth
and evil excess and humbly welcome the word that has been planted
in you and is able to save your souls. Be doers of the word and
not hearers only, deluding yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer
of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his own
face in a mirror. He sees himself, then goes off and promptly
forgets what he looked like. But the one who peers into the
perfect law of freedom and perseveres, and is not a hearer who
forgets but a doer who acts, such a one shall be blessed in what
he does. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his
tongue but deceives his heart, his religion is vain. Religion that
is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care
for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself
unstained by the world. [JMS 1:19-27]
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but
does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or
sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of
you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat
well," but you do not give them the necessities of the body,
what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have
works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, "You have faith and
I have works." Demonstrate your faith to me without works,
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works. You believe
that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and
tremble. Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without
works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works
when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? You see that faith
was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the
works. Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham
believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,"
and he was called "the friend of God." See how a person
is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way,
was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she welcomed
the messengers and sent them out by a different route? For just as
a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is
dead. [JMS 2:14-26]
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. Wisdom of this kind does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. [JMS
3:13-18]
You have condemned; you have murdered the righteous one; he
offers you no resistance. [JMS 5:6]
Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits? He should sing praise. Is anyone among you sick?
He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be
forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.
[JMS 5:13-16]
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps.
"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."
When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten; instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your
souls. [1PT 2:21-25]
Finally, all of you, be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward
one another, compassionate, humble. Do not return evil for evil,
or insult for insult; but, on the contrary, a blessing, because to
this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing. For:
"Whoever would love life and see good days must keep the
tongue from evil and the lips from speaking deceit, must turn from
evil and do good, seek peace and follow after it. For the eyes of
the Lord are on the righteous and his ears turned to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against evildoers." Now who is
going to harm you if you are enthusiastic for what is good? But
even if you should suffer because of righteousness, blessed are
you. Do not be afraid or terrified with fear of them, but sanctify
Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an
explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but
do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience
clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good
conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. For it is better
to suffer for doing good, if that be the will of God, than for
doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous
for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God.
Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit. [1PT
3:8-18]
Beloved, do not be surprised that a trial by fire is occurring
among you, as if something strange were happening to you. But
rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ,
so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice
exultantly. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed
are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But
let no one among you be made to suffer as a murderer, a thief, an
evildoer, or as an intriguer. But whoever is made to suffer as a
Christian should not be ashamed but glorify God because of the
name. For it is time for the judgment to begin with the household
of God; if it begins with us, how will it end for those who fail
to obey the gospel of God? "And if the righteous one is
barely saved, where will the godless and the sinner appear?"
As a result, those who suffer in accord with God's will hand their
souls over to a faithful creator as they do good. [1PT 4:12-19]
Symeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of equal value to ours through the righteousness of our God and savior Jesus Christ: may grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge
of God and of Jesus our Lord. [2PT 1:1-2]
There were also false prophets among the people, just as there
will be false teachers among you, who will introduce destructive
heresies and even deny the Master who ransomed them, bringing
swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their licentious
ways, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled. In
their greed they will exploit you with fabrications, but from of
old their condemnation has not been idle and their destruction
does not sleep. For if God did not spare the angels when they
sinned, but condemned them to the chains of Tartarus and handed
them over to be kept for judgment; and if he did not spare the
ancient world, even though he preserved Noah, a herald of
righteousness, together with seven others, when he brought a flood
upon the godless world; and if he condemned the cities of Sodom
and Gomorrah (to destruction), reducing them to ashes, making them
an example for the godless (people) of what is coming; and if he
rescued Lot, a righteous man oppressed by the licentious conduct
of unprincipled people (for day after day that righteous man
living among them was tormented in his righteous soul at the
lawless deeds that he saw and heard), then the Lord knows how to
rescue the devout from trial and to keep the unrighteous under
punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who
follow the flesh with its depraved desire and show contempt for
lordship. [2PT 2:1-10]
Abandoning the straight road, they have gone astray, following
the road of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved payment for
wrongdoing, but he received a rebuke for his own crime: a mute
beast spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet's
madness. These people are waterless springs and mists driven by a
gale; for them the gloom of darkness has been reserved. For,
talking empty bombast, they seduce with licentious desires of the
flesh those who have barely escaped from people who live in error.
They promise them freedom, though they themselves are slaves of
corruption, for a person is a slave of whatever overcomes him. For
if they, having escaped the defilements of the world through the
knowledge of (our) Lord and savior Jesus Christ, again become
entangled and overcome by them, their last condition is worse than
their first. For it would have been better for them not to have
known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back
from the holy commandment handed down to them. What is expressed
in the true proverb has happened to them, "The dog returns to
its own vomit," and "A bathed sow returns to wallowing
in the mire." [2PT 2:15-22]
But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord
one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one
day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard
"delay," but he is patient with you, not wishing that
any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the
day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will
pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by
fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out.
Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of
persons ought (you) to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and
devotion, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God,
because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the
elements melted by fire. But according to his promise we await new
heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore,
beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found
without spot or blemish before him, at peace. And consider the
patience of our Lord as salvation, as our beloved brother Paul,
according to the wisdom given to him, also wrote to you, speaking
of these things as he does in all his letters. In them there are
some things hard to understand that the ignorant and unstable
distort to their own destruction, just as they do the other
scriptures. [2PT 3:8-16]
My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one. He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. The way we may be sure
that we know him is to keep his commandments. Whoever says, "I know him," but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him:
whoever claims to abide in him ought to live (just) as he lived. [1JN
2:1-6]
Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that the
antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus
we know this is the last hour. They went out from us, but they
were not really of our number; if they had been, they would have
remained with us. Their desertion shows that none of them was of
our number. But you have the anointing that comes from the holy
one, and you all have knowledge. I write to you not because you do
not know the truth but because you do, and because every lie is
alien to the truth. Who is the liar? Whoever denies that Jesus is
the Christ. Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the
antichrist. No one who denies the Son has the Father, but whoever
confesses the Son has the Father as well. Let what you heard from
the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning
remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father.
And this is the promise that he made us: eternal life. I write you
these things about those who would deceive you. As for you, the
anointing that you received from him remains in you, so that you
do not need anyone to teach you. But his anointing teaches you
about everything and is true and not false; just as it taught you,
remain in him. And now, children, remain in him, so that when he
appears we may have confidence and not be put to shame by him at
his coming. If you consider that he is righteous, you also know
that everyone who acts in righteousness is begotten by him. [1JN
2:18-29]
Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness, for sin is
lawlessness. You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and
in him there is no sin. No one who remains in him sins; no one who
sins has seen him or known him. Children, let no one deceive you.
The person who acts in righteousness is righteous, just as he is
righteous. Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil
has sinned from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed
to destroy the works of the devil. No one who is begotten by God
commits sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot sin
because he is begotten by God. In this way, the children of God
and the children of the devil are made plain; no one who fails to
act in righteousness belongs to God, nor anyone who does not love
his brother. [1JN 3:4-10]
For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: we
should love one another, unlike Cain who belonged to the evil one
and slaughtered his brother. Why did he slaughter him? Because his
own works were evil, and those of his brother righteous. Do not be
amazed, (then,) brothers, if the world hates you. We know that we
have passed from death to life because we love our brothers.
Whoever does not love remains in death. Everyone who hates his
brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal
life remaining in him. The way we came to know love was that he
laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for
our brothers. If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in
need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in
him? [1JN 3:11-17]
Then I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire. On
the sea of glass were standing those who had won the victory over
the beast and its image and the number that signified its name.
They were holding God's harps, and they sang the song of Moses,
the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb: "Great and
wonderful are your works, Lord God almighty. Just and true are
your ways, O king of the nations. Who will not fear you, Lord, or
glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All the nations will
come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been
revealed." [RV 15:2-4]
Then I heard something like the sound of a great multitude or
the sound of rushing water or mighty peals of thunder, as they
said: "Alleluia! The Lord has established his reign, (our)
God, the almighty. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory.
For the wedding day of the Lamb has come, his bride has made
herself ready. She was allowed to wear a bright, clean linen
garment." (The linen represents the righteous deeds of the
holy ones.) Then the angel said to me, "Write this: Blessed
are those who have been called to the wedding feast of the
Lamb." And he said to me, "These words are true; they
come from God." [RV 19:6-9]
Then I saw the heavens opened, and there was a white horse; its rider was (called) "Faithful and True." He judges and wages war in righteousness. His eyes were (like) a fiery flame, and on his head were many diadems. He had a name
inscribed that no one knows except himself. [RV 19:11-12]
And he said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true,
and the Lord, the God of prophetic spirits, sent his angel to show
his servants what must happen soon." "Behold, I am
coming soon." Blessed is the one who keeps the prophetic
message of this book. It is I, John, who heard and saw these
things, and when I heard and saw them I fell down to worship at
the feet of the angel who showed them to me. But he said to me,
"Don't! I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brothers
the prophets and of those who keep the message of this book.
Worship God." Then he said to me, "Do not seal up the
prophetic words of this book, for the appointed time is near. Let
the wicked still act wickedly, and the filthy still be filthy. The
righteous must still do right, and the holy still be holy."
"Behold, I am coming soon. I bring with me the recompense I
will give to each according to his deeds. I am the Alpha and the
Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." [RV
22:6-13]
