To Sarah he said: "See, I have given your brother a
thousand shekels of silver. Let that serve you as a vindication
before all who are with you; your honor has been preserved with
everyone." [GEN 20:16]
"Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a
long life in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you." [EX
20:12]
"A priest shall not marry a woman who has been a prostitute or has lost her honor, nor a woman who has been divorced by her husband;
for the priest is sacred to his God. Honor him as sacred who offers up the food of your God; treat him as sacred, because I, the LORD, who have consecrated him, am sacred."
[LEV 21:7-8] [Note: Under the Old Covenant, priests were
permitted to marry certain women. Religious offices
indicated in the New Testament are in their infancy and can be
shown to be developing even in Scripture. Within a short time,
many religious offices in the Church adopted Jesus' and Paul's
recommended observance of celibacy
as a general rule.]
"The priest shall marry a virgin. Not a widow or a woman who has been divorced or a woman who has lost her honor as a prostitute, but a virgin, taken from his own people, shall he marry; otherwise he will have base offspring among his people. I, the
LORD, have made him sacred." [LEV 21:13-15] [Note: Under the

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Phinehas, son of Eleazar,
son of Aaron the priest, has turned my anger from the Israelites
by his zeal for my honor among them; that is why I did not put an
end to the Israelites for the offense to my honor. Announce,
therefore, that I hereby give him my pledge of friendship, which
shall be for him and for his descendants after him the pledge of
an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous on behalf of his
God and thus made amends for the Israelites." [NUM 25:10-13]
'Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD, your God, has
commanded you, that you may have a long life and prosperity in the
land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.' [DEUT 5:16]
"At the end of every seven-year period you shall have a
relaxation of debts, which shall be observed as follows. Every
creditor shall relax his claim on what he has loaned his neighbor;
he must not press his neighbor, his kinsman, because a relaxation
in honor of the LORD has been proclaimed. You may press a
foreigner, but you shall relax the claim on your kinsman for what
is yours." [DEUT 15:1-3] [Note: Although various Old
Testament practices are not binding under the New Covenant, such
passages may nevertheless be useful for reference purposes.]
"Observe the month of Abib by keeping the Passover of the
LORD, your God, since it was in the month of Abib that he brought
you by night out of Egypt... For six days you shall eat unleavened
bread, and on the seventh there shall be a solemn meeting in honor
of the LORD, your God; on that day you shall not do any sort of
work." [Taken from DEUT 16:1,8] [Note: Although
various Old Testament practices are not binding under the New
Covenant, such passages may nevertheless be useful for reference
purposes.]
"You shall count off seven weeks, computing them from the
day when the sickle is first put to the standing grain. You shall
then keep the feast of Weeks in honor of the LORD, your God, and
the measure of your own freewill offering shall be in proportion
to the blessing the LORD, your God, has bestowed on you." [DEUT 16:9-10]
[Note: Although various Old Testament practices are not binding
under the New Covenant, such passages may nevertheless be useful
for reference purposes.]
Joshua said to Achan, "My son, give to the LORD, the God
of Israel, glory and honor by telling me what you have done; do
not hide it from me." [JOSH 7:19]
"Now then, if you have acted in good faith and honorably
in appointing Abimelech your king, if you have dealt well with
Jerubbaal and with his family, and if you have treated him as he
deserved - for my father fought for you at the risk of his life
when he saved you from the power of Midian; but you have risen
against his family this day and have killed his seventy sons upon
one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his handmaid, king
over the citizens of Shechem, because he is your kinsman - if,
then, you have acted in good faith and with honor toward Jerubbaal
and his family this day, rejoice in Abimelech and may he in turn
rejoice in you. But if not, let fire come forth from Abimelech to
devour the citizens of Shechem and Beth-millo, and let fire come forth from the citizens and from Beth-millo to devour
Abimelech." [JUDG 9:16-20]
Manoah said to him, "What is your name, that we may honor
you when your words come true?" The angel of the LORD
answered him, "Why do you ask my name, which is
mysterious?" [JUDG 13:17-18]
This, therefore, is the oracle of the LORD, the God of Israel:
'I said in the past that your family and your father's family
should minister in my presence forever. But now,' the LORD
declares, 'away with this! for I will honor those who honor me,
but those who spurn me shall be accursed.' [Taken from 1SAM 2:30]
The servant replied, "Listen! There is a man of God in
this city, a man held in high esteem; all that he says is sure to
come true. Let us go there now! Perhaps he can tell us how to
accomplish our errand." [1SAM 9:6]
Then the LORD spoke to Samuel: "I regret having made Saul
king, for he has turned from me and has not kept my command."
At this Samuel grew angry and cried out to the LORD all night.
Early in the morning he went to meet Saul, but was informed that
Saul had gone to Carmel, where he erected a trophy in his own
honor, and that on his return he had passed on and gone down to
Gilgal. [1SAM 15:10-12]
Samuel said to Saul: "Stop! Let me tell you what the LORD
said to me last night." "Speak!" he replied. Samuel
then said: "Though little in your own esteem, are you not
leader of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king of
Israel and sent you on a mission, saying, 'Go and put the sinful
Amalekites under a ban of destruction. Fight against them until
you have exterminated them.' Why then have you disobeyed the LORD?
You have pounced on the spoil, thus displeasing the LORD." [1SAM
15:16-17]
As Samuel turned to go, Saul seized a loose end of his mantle,
and it tore off. So Samuel said to him: "The LORD has torn
the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a
neighbor of yours, who is better than you. The Glory of Israel
neither retracts nor repents, for he is not man that he should
repent." But he answered: "I have sinned, yet honor me
now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Return with
me that I may worship the LORD your God." And so Samuel
returned with him, and Saul worshiped the LORD. [1SAM 15:27-31]
Ahimelech answered the king: "And who among all your
servants is as loyal as David, the king's son-in-law, captain of
your bodyguard, and honored in your own house?" [Taken from 1SAM 22:14]
When David returned to bless his own family, Saul's daughter
Michal came out to meet him and said, "How the king of Israel
has honored himself today, exposing himself to the view of the
slave girls of his followers, as a commoner might do!" But
David replied to Michal: "I was dancing before the LORD. As
the LORD lives, who preferred me to your father and his whole
family when he appointed me commander of the LORD'S people,
Israel, not only will I make merry before the LORD, but I will
demean myself even more. I will be lowly in your esteem, but in
the esteem of the slave girls you spoke of I will be
honored." And so Saul's daughter Michal was childless to the
day of her death. [2SAM 6:20-23]
David thought, "I will be kind to Hanun, son of Nahash, as
his father was kind to me." So David sent his servants with
condolences to Hanun for the loss of his father. But when David's
servants entered the country of the Ammonites, the Ammonite
princes said to their lord Hanun: "Do you think that David is
honoring your father by sending men with condolences? Is it not
rather to explore the city, to spy on it, and to overthrow it,
that David has sent his messengers to you?"
[2SAM 10:2-3]
Solomon sent back this message to Hiram: "You know that my
father David, because of the enemies surrounding him on all sides,
could not build a temple in honor of the LORD, his God, until such
a time as the LORD should put these enemies under the soles of his
feet. But now the LORD, my God, has given me peace on all sides.
There is no enemy or threat of danger. So I purpose to build a
temple in honor of the LORD, my God, as the LORD predicted to my
father David when he said: 'It is your son whom I will put upon
your throne in your place who shall build the temple in my
honor.'" [Taken from 1KGS 5:16-19]
Then Solomon said, "The LORD intends to dwell in the dark
cloud; I have truly built you a princely house, a dwelling where
you may abide forever." The king turned and greeted the whole
community of Israel as they stood. He said to them: "Blessed
be the LORD, the God of Israel, who with his own mouth made a
promise to my father David and by his hand has brought it to
fulfillment. It was he who said, 'Since the day I brought my
people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city out of any
tribe of Israel for the building of a temple to my honor; but I
choose David to rule my people Israel.' When my father David
wished to build a temple to the honor of the LORD, the God of
Israel, the LORD said to him, 'In wishing to build a temple to my
honor, you do well. It will not be you, however, who will build
the temple; but the son who will spring from you, he shall build
the temple to my honor.' And now the LORD has fulfilled the
promise that he made: I have succeeded my father David and sit on
the throne of Israel, as the LORD foretold, and I have built this
temple to honor the LORD, the God of Israel. I have provided in it
a place for the ark in which is the covenant of the LORD, which he
made with our fathers when he brought them out of the land of
Egypt." [1KGS 8:12-21]
Look kindly on the prayer and petition of your servant, O LORD,
my God, and listen to the cry of supplication which I, your
servant, utter before you this day. May your eyes watch night and
day over this temple, the place where you have decreed you shall
be honored; may you heed the prayer which I, your servant, offer
in this place. Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your
people Israel which they offer in this place. Listen from your
heavenly dwelling and grant pardon. [Taken from 1KGS 8:28-30]
But if you and your descendants ever withdraw from me, fail to
keep the commandments and statutes which I set before you, and
proceed to venerate and worship strange gods, I will cut off
Israel from the land I gave them and repudiate the temple I have
consecrated to my honor. Israel shall become a proverb and a
byword among all nations, and this temple shall become a heap of
ruins. Every passerby shall catch his breath in amazement, and
ask, 'Why has the LORD done this to the land and to this temple?'
[Taken from 1KGS 9:6-8]
Yet I will not take any of the kingdom from Solomon himself,
but will keep him a prince as long as he lives for the sake of my
servant David, whom I chose, who kept my commandments and
statutes. But I will take the kingdom from his son and will give
it to you - that is, the ten tribes. I will give his son one tribe,
that my servant David may always have a lamp before me in
Jerusalem, the city in which I choose to be honored. [Taken from
1KGS 11:34-36]
Rehoboam, son of Solomon, reigned in Judah. He was forty-one
years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in
Jerusalem, the city in which, out of all the tribes of Israel, the
LORD chose to be honored. His mother was the Ammonite named Naamah.
Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and by their sins angered
him even more than their fathers had done. [1KGS 14:21-22]
Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come here to
me." When they had done so, he repaired the altar of the LORD
which had been destroyed. He took twelve stones, for the number of
tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the LORD had said, "Your
name shall be Israel." He built an altar in honor of the LORD
with the stones, and made a trench around the altar large enough
for two seahs of grain. [Taken from 1KGS 18:30-32]
Naaman, the army commander of the king of Aram, was highly
esteemed and respected by his master, for through him the LORD had
brought victory to Aram. But valiant as he was, the man was a
leper. [2KGS 5:1]
Then he called for his son Solomon and commanded him to build a
house for the LORD, the God of Israel. David said to Solomon:
"My son, it was my purpose to build a house myself for the
honor of the LORD, my God. But this word of the LORD came to me:
'You have shed much blood, and you have waged great wars. You may
not build a house in my honor, because you have shed too much
blood upon the earth in my sight. However, a son is to be born to
you. He will be a peaceful man, and I will give him rest from all
his enemies on every side. For Solomon shall be his name, and in
his time I will bestow peace and tranquility on Israel. It is he
who shall build a house in my honor; he shall be a son to me, and
I will be a father to him, and I will establish the throne of his
kingship over Israel forever.' Now, my son, the LORD be with you,
and may you succeed in building the house of the LORD your God, as
he has said you shall. May the LORD give you prudence and
discernment when he brings you to rule over Israel, so that you
keep the law of the LORD, your God. Only then shall you succeed,
if you are careful to observe the precepts and decrees which the
LORD gave Moses for Israel. Be brave and steadfast; do not fear or
lose heart." [Taken from 1CHRON 22:6-13]
David also commanded all of Israel's leaders to help his son
Solomon: "Is not the LORD your God with you? Has he not given
you rest on every side? Indeed, he has delivered the occupants of
the land into my power, and the land is subdued before the LORD
and his people. Therefore, devote your hearts and souls to seeking
the LORD your God. Proceed to build the sanctuary of the LORD God,
that the ark of the covenant of the LORD and God's sacred vessels
may be brought into the house built in honor of the LORD."
[1CHRON 22:17-19]
Then David blessed the LORD in the presence of the whole
assembly, praying in these words: "Blessed may you be, O
LORD, God of Israel our father, from eternity to eternity. Yours, O LORD, are grandeur and power, majesty, splendor,
and glory. For all in heaven and on earth is yours; yours, O LORD,
is the sovereignty; you are exalted as head over all. Riches
and honor are from you, and you have dominion over all. In your
hand are power and might; it is yours to give grandeur and
strength to all. Therefore, our God, we give you thanks and we
praise the majesty of your name. But who am I, and who
are my people, that we should have the means to contribute so
freely? For everything is from you, and we only give you what we
have received from you. For we stand before you as aliens: we are
only your guests, like all our fathers. Our life on earth is like
a shadow that does not abide. O LORD our God, all this wealth that
we have brought together to build you a house in honor of your
holy name comes from you and is entirely yours." [Taken from 1CHRON
29:10-16]
Solomon gave orders for the building of a house to honor the
LORD and also of a house for his own royal estate. [2CHRON 1:18]
Hezekiah sent a message to all Israel and Judah, and even wrote
letters to Ephraim and Manasseh saying that they should come to
the house of the LORD in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover in
honor of the LORD, the God of Israel. [2CHRON 30:1]
Hezekiah rested with his ancestors; he was buried at the
approach to the tombs of the descendants of David. All Judah and
the inhabitants of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. His son
Manasseh succeeded him as king. [2CHRON 32:33]
At that time, then, she spread out her hands, and facing the
window, poured out this prayer: "Blessed are you, O Lord,
merciful God! Forever blessed and honored is your holy name; may
all your works forever bless you." [Taken from TOBIT 3:11]
So he called his son Tobiah; and when he came, he said to him: "My son, when I die, give me a decent burial. Honor your mother, and do not abandon her as long as she lives. Do whatever pleases her, and do not grieve her spirit in any way.
Remember, my son, that she went through many trials for your sake while you were in her womb. And when she dies, bury her in the same grave with me."
[TOBIT 4:3-4]
Then he kissed his daughter Sarah and said to her: "My
daughter, honor your father-in-law and your mother-in-law, because
from now on they are as much your parents as the ones who brought
you into the world. Go in peace, my daughter; let me hear good
reports about you as long as I live." Finally he said
good-bye to them and sent them away. [TOBIT 10:12]
When Tobiah left Raguel, he was full of happiness and joy, and
he blessed the Lord of heaven and earth, the King of all, for
making his journey so successful. Finally he said good-bye to
Raguel and his wife Edna, and added, "May I honor you all the
days of my life!" [TOBIT 10:14]
Raphael called the two men aside privately and said to them:
"Thank God! Give him the praise and the glory. Before all the
living, acknowledge the many good things he has done for you, by
blessing and extolling his name in song. Before all men, honor and
proclaim God's deeds, and do not be slack in praising him. A
king's secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to
be declared and made known. Praise them with due honor. Do good,
and evil will not find its way to you. Prayer and fasting are
good, but better than either is almsgiving accompanied by
righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than
abundance with wickedness. It is better to give alms than to store
up gold; for almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every
sin. Those who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life; but
those habitually guilty of sin are their own worst enemies. I will now tell you the whole truth; I will conceal nothing
at all from you. I have already said to you, 'A king's secret it
is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to be made known with
due honor.' I can now tell you that when you, Tobit, and Sarah
prayed, it was I who presented and read the record of your prayer
before the Glory of the Lord; and I did the same thing when you
used to bury the dead. When you did not hesitate to get up and
leave your dinner in order to go and bury the dead, I was sent to
put you to the test. At the same time, however, God commissioned
me to heal you and your daughter-in-law Sarah. I am Raphael, one
of the seven angels who enter and serve before the Glory of the
Lord." Stricken with fear, the two men fell to the ground.
[Taken from TOBIT 12:6-16]
Tobit died peacefully at the age of a hundred and twelve, and
received an honorable burial in Nineveh. [TOBIT 14:1]
Then Uzziah said to her: "Blessed are you, daughter, by
the Most High God, above all the women on earth; and blessed be
the Lord God, the creator of heaven and earth, who guided your
blow at the head of the chief of our enemies. Your deed of hope
will never be forgotten by those who tell of the might of God. May
God make this redound to your everlasting honor, rewarding you
with blessings, because you risked your life when your people were
being oppressed, and you averted our disaster, walking uprightly
before our God." And all the people answered, "Amen!
Amen!" [JDTH 13:18-20]
All the women of Israel gathered to see her; and they blessed her and performed a dance in her honor. She took branches in her hands and distributed them to the women around her, and she and the other women crowned themselves with garlands of olive leaves. At the head of all the people, she led the women in the dance, while the men of Israel followed in their armor, wearing garlands and singing hymns.
[JDTH 15:12-13]
The king also appointed Mordecai to serve at the court, and rewarded him for his actions. Haman, however, son of Hammedatha the Agagite, who was in high honor with the king, sought to harm Mordecai and his people because of the two eunuchs of the king.
[ESTH A:16-17]
"For the queen's conduct will become known to all the women, and
they will look with disdain upon their husbands when it is
reported, 'King Ahasuerus commanded that Queen Vashti be
ushered into his presence, but she would not come.' This very day
the Persian and Median ladies who hear of the queen's conduct will
rebel against all the royal officials, with corresponding disdain
and rancor. If it please the king, let an irrevocable royal decree
be issued by him and inscribed among the laws of the Persians and
Medes, forbidding Vashti to come into the presence of King
Ahasuerus and authorizing the king to give her royal dignity to
one more worthy than she. Thus, when the decree which the king
will issue is published throughout his realm, vast as it is, all
wives will honor their husbands, from the greatest to the
least." This proposal found acceptance with the king and the
officials, and the king acted on the advice of Memucan. [Taken
from ESTH 1:17-21]
The king loved Esther more than all other women, and of all the virgins she won his favor and benevolence. So he placed the royal diadem on her head and made her queen in place of Vashti. Then the king gave a great feast in honor of Esther to all his officials and ministers, granting a holiday to the provinces and bestowing gifts with royal bounty.
[ESTH 2:17-18]
Recalling all that the Lord had done, he prayed to him and
said: "O Lord God, almighty King, all things are in your
power, and there is no one to oppose you in your will to save
Israel. You made heaven and earth and every wonderful thing under
the heavens. You are Lord of all, and there is no one who can
resist you, Lord. You know all things. You know, O Lord, that it
was not out of insolence or pride or desire for fame that I acted
thus in not bowing down to the proud Haman. Gladly would I have
kissed the soles of his feet for the salvation of Israel. But I
acted as I did so as not to place the honor of man above that of
God. I will not bow down to anyone but you, my Lord. It is not out
of pride that I am acting thus. And now, Lord God, King, God of
Abraham, spare your people, for our enemies plan our ruin and are
bent upon destroying the inheritance that was yours from the
beginning. Do not spurn your portion, which you redeemed for
yourself out of Egypt. Hear my prayer; have pity on your
inheritance and turn our sorrow into joy: thus we shall live to
sing praise to your name, O Lord. Do not silence those who praise
you." All Israel, too, cried out with all their strength, for
death was staring them in the face. [ESTH C:1-11]
"If it please your majesty," Esther replied,
"come today with Haman to a banquet I have prepared."
And the king ordered, "Have Haman make haste to fulfill the
wish of Esther." So the king went with Haman to the banquet
Esther had prepared. During the drinking of the wine, the king
said to Esther, "Whatever you ask for shall be granted, and
whatever request you make shall be honored, even if it is for half
my kingdom." Esther replied: "This is my petition and
request: if I have found favor with the king and if it pleases
your majesty to grant my petition and honor my request, come with
Haman tomorrow to a banquet which I shall prepare for you; and
then I will do as you ask." [ESTH 5:4-8]
That night the king, unable to sleep, asked that the chronicle
of notable events be brought in. While this was being read to him,
the passage occurred in which Mordecai reported Bagathan and
Teresh, two of the royal eunuchs who guarded the entrance, for
seeking to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. The king asked, "What
was done to reward and honor Mordecai for this?" [Taken from
ESTH 6:1-3]
On the same day, when the number of those killed in the stronghold of Susa was reported to the king, he said to Queen Esther: "In the stronghold of Susa the Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men, as well as the ten sons of Haman. What must they have done in the other royal provinces! You shall again be granted whatever you ask, and whatever you request shall be honored."
[ESTH 9:11-12]
Because of them the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away, and she
became the abode of strangers. She became a stranger to her own
offspring, and her children forsook her. Her sanctuary was as
desolate as a wilderness; her feasts were turned into mourning,
Her sabbaths to shame, her honor to contempt. Her dishonor was as
great as her glory had been, and her exaltation was turned into
mourning. [1MACC 1:38-40]
Then the officers of the king addressed Mattathias: "You
are a leader, an honorable and great man in this city, supported
by sons and kinsmen. Come now, be the first to obey the king's
command, as all the Gentiles and the men of Judah and those who
are left in Jerusalem have done. Then you and your sons shall be
numbered among the King's Friends, and shall be enriched with
silver and gold and many gifts." But Mattathias answered in a
loud voice: "Although all the Gentiles in the king's realm
obey him, so that each forsakes the religion of his fathers and
consents to the king's orders, yet I and my sons and my kinsmen
will keep to the covenant of our fathers. God forbid that we
should forsake the law and the commandments. We will not obey the
words of the king nor depart from our religion in the slightest
degree." [1MACC 2:17-22]
Demetrius sent a letter to Jonathan written in peaceful terms,
to pay him honor; for he said: "Let us be the first to make
peace with him, before he makes peace with Alexander against us,
since he will remember all the wrongs we have done to him, his
brothers, and his nation." [1MACC 10:3-5]
King Alexander also wrote to Jonathan to come and meet him. So
he went with pomp to Ptolemais, where he met the two kings and
gave them and their friends silver and gold and many gifts and
thus won their favor. Some pestilent Israelites, transgressors of
the law, united against him to accuse him, but the king paid no
heed to them. He ordered Jonathan to be divested of his ordinary
garments and to be clothed in royal purple; and so it was done.
The king also had him seated at his side. He said to his
magistrates: "Go with him to the center of the city and make
a proclamation that no one is to bring charges against him on any
grounds or be troublesome to him in any way." When his
accusers saw the honor paid to him in the proclamation, and the
purple with which he was clothed, they all fled. The king also
honored him by numbering him among his Chief Friends and made him
military commander and governor of the province. So Jonathan
returned in peace and happiness to Jerusalem. [1MACC 10:59-66]
When King Alexander heard of these events, he accorded new honors to Jonathan. He sent him a gold buckle, such as is usually given to King's Kinsmen; he also gave him Ekron and all its territory as a possession. [1MACC
10:88-89]
Meanwhile Jonathan sent the request to King Demetrius to
withdraw his troops from the citadel of Jerusalem and from the
other strongholds, for they were constantly hostile to Israel.
Demetrius, in turn, sent this word to Jonathan: "I will not
only do this for you and your nation, but I will greatly honor you
and your nation when I find the opportunity. Do me the favor,
therefore, of sending men to fight for me, because all my troops
have revolted." So Jonathan sent three thousand good fighting
men to him at Antioch. [Taken from 1MACC 11:41-44]
Jonathan marched out against him with forty thousand picked
fighting men and came to Beth-shan. But when Trypho saw that
Jonathan had arrived with a large army he was afraid to offer him
violence. Instead, he received him with honor, introduced him to
all his friends, and gave him presents. He also ordered his
friends and soldiers to obey him as they would himself. [1MACC
12:41-43]
"When the Jewish people saw Simon's loyalty and the glory he
planned to bring to his nation, they made him their leader and
high priest because of all he had accomplished and the loyalty and
justice he had shown his nation. In every way he sought to exalt
his people. In his time and under his guidance they
succeeded in driving the Gentiles out of their country, especially
those in the City of David in Jerusalem, who had built for
themselves a citadel from which they used to sally forth to defile
the environs of the temple and inflict grave injury on its purity.
In this citadel he stationed Jewish soldiers, and he strengthened
its fortifications for the defense of the land and the city, while
he also raised the wall of Jerusalem to a greater height.
Consequently, King Demetrius confirmed him in the high priesthood,
made him one of his Friends, and conferred the highest honors on
him. He had indeed heard that the Romans had addressed the Jews as
friends, allies, and brothers and that they had received Simon's
envoys with honor." [Taken from 1MACC 14:35-40]
"When we recover our kingdom, we will greatly honor you and your
nation and the temple, so that your glory will be manifest in all
the earth." [Taken from 1MACC 15:9]
While the holy city lived in perfect peace and the laws were
strictly observed because of the piety of the high priest Onias
and his hatred of evil, the kings themselves honored the Place and
glorified the temple with the most magnificent gifts. [2MACC 3:1-2]
They despised what their ancestors had regarded as honors,
while they highly prized what the Greeks esteemed as glory.
Precisely because of this, they found themselves in serious
trouble: the very people whose manner of life they emulated, and
whom they desired to imitate in everything, became their enemies
and oppressors. It is no light matter to flout the laws of God, as
the following period will show. [Taken from 2MACC 4:15-17]
Not satisfied with this, the king dared to enter the holiest
temple in the world; Menelaus, that traitor both to the laws and
to his country, served as guide. He laid his impure hands on the
sacred vessels and gathered up with profane hands the votive
offerings made by other kings for the advancement, the glory, and
the honor of the Place. Puffed up in spirit, Antiochus did not
realize that it was because of the sins of the city's inhabitants
that the Lord was angry for a little while and hence disregarded
the holy Place. [2MACC 5:15-16]
How long will you people mock my honor, love what is
worthless, chase after lies? [Taken from PS 4:3]
What are humans that you are mindful of them, mere mortals that
you care for them? Yet you have made them little less than a god,
crowned them with glory and honor. [PS 8:5-6]
Those who honor your name trust in you; you never forsake those
who seek you, LORD. [PS 9:11]
LORD, who may abide in your tent? Who may dwell on your holy
mountain? Whoever walks without blame, doing what is right,
speaking truth from the heart; Who does not slander a neighbor,
does no harm to another, never defames a friend; Who disdains the
wicked, but honors those who fear the LORD; Who keeps an oath
despite the cost, lends no money at interest, accepts no bribe
against the innocent. Whoever acts like this shall never be
shaken. [PS 15:1-5]
"You who fear the LORD, give praise! All descendants of
Jacob, give honor; show reverence, all descendants of Israel!" [PS
22:24]
All the paths of the LORD are faithful love toward those who
honor the covenant demands. [PS 25:10]
Listen, my daughter, and understand; pay me careful heed.
Forget your people and your father's house, that the king might
desire your beauty. He is your lord; honor him, daughter of Tyre.
Then the richest of the people will seek your favor with gifts. [PS
45:11-13]
"Offer praise as your sacrifice to God; fulfill your vows to the Most High.
Then call on me in time of distress; I will rescue you, and you shall honor me."
[PS 50:14-15]
"Those who offer praise as a sacrifice honor me; to the obedient
I will show the salvation of God." [PS 50:23]
I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands,
calling on your name. My soul shall savor the rich banquet of
praise, with joyous lips my mouth shall honor you! [PS 63:5-6]
You have sent me many bitter afflictions, but once more revive
me. From the watery depths of the earth once more raise me up.
Restore my honor; turn and comfort me, That I may praise you with
the lyre for your faithfulness, my God, And sing to you with the
harp, O Holy One of Israel! [PS 71:20-22]
Since my heart was embittered and my soul deeply wounded, I was
stupid and could not understand; I was like a brute beast in your
presence. Yet I am always with you; you take hold of my right
hand. With your counsel you guide me, and at the end receive me
with honor. Whom else have I in the heavens? None beside you
delights me on earth. Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is
the rock of my heart, my portion forever. But those who are far
from you perish; you destroy those unfaithful to you. [PS 73:21-27]
All the nations you have made shall come to bow before you,
Lord, and give honor to your name. For you are great and do
wondrous deeds; and you alone are God. [PS 86:9-10]
Whoever clings to me I will deliver; whoever knows my name I
will set on high. All who call upon me I will answer; I will be
with them in distress; I will deliver them and give them honor.
With length of days I will satisfy them and show them my saving
power. [PS 91:14-16]
Hallelujah! Happy are those who fear the LORD, who greatly
delight in God's commands. Their descendants shall be mighty in
the land, generation upright and blessed. Wealth and riches shall
be in their homes; their prosperity shall endure forever. They
shine through the darkness, a light for the upright; they are
gracious, merciful, and just. All goes well for those gracious in
lending, who conduct their affairs with justice. They shall never
be shaken; the just shall be remembered forever. They shall not
fear an ill report; their hearts are steadfast, trusting the LORD.
Their hearts are tranquil, without fear, till at last they look
down on their foes. Lavishly they give to the poor; their
prosperity shall endure forever; their horn shall be exalted in
honor. The wicked shall be angry to see this; they will gnash
their teeth and waste away; the desires of the wicked come to
nothing. [PS 112:1-10]
Hallelujah! Sing to the LORD a new song, a hymn in the assembly
of the faithful. Let Israel be glad in their maker, the people of
Zion rejoice in their king. Let them praise his name in festive
dance, make music with tambourine and lyre. For the LORD takes
delight in his people, honors the poor with victory. [PS 149:1-4]
My son, forget not my teaching, keep in mind my commands; For
many days, and years of life, and peace, will they bring you. Let
not kindness and fidelity leave you; bind them around your neck;
Then will you win favor and good esteem before God and man. [PROV
3:4]
Honor the LORD with your wealth, with first fruits of all your produce;
Then will your barns be filled with grain, with new wine your vats will overflow. [PROV
3:9-10]
Happy the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains
understanding! For her profit is better than profit in silver, and
better than gold is her revenue; She is more precious than corals,
and none of your choice possessions can compare with her. Long
life is in her right hand, in her left are riches and honor; Her
ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace; She is a tree
of life to those who grasp her, and he is happy who holds her
fast. [PROV 3:13-18]
Honor is the possession of wise men, but fools inherit shame. [PROV
3:35]
"Get wisdom, get understanding! Do not forget or turn
aside from the words I utter. Forsake her not, and she will
preserve you; love her, and she will safeguard you; The beginning
of wisdom is: get wisdom; at the cost of all you have, get
understanding. Extol her, and she will exalt you; she will bring
you honors if you embrace her; She will put on your head a
graceful diadem; a glorious crown will she bestow on you." [PROV
4:5-9]
The lips of an adulteress drip with honey, and her mouth is
smoother than oil; But in the end she is as bitter as wormwood, as
sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death, to the
nether world her steps attain; Lest you see before you the road to
life, her paths will ramble, you know not where. So now, O
children, listen to me, go not astray from the words of my mouth.
Keep your way far from her, approach not the door of her house,
Lest you give your honor to others, and your years to a merciless
one; Lest strangers have their fill of your wealth, your hard-won
earnings go to an alien's house; And you groan in the end, when
your flesh and your body are consumed; And you say, "Oh, why
did I hate instruction, and my heart spurn reproof! Why did I not
listen to the voice of my teachers, nor to my instructors incline
my ear!" [Taken from PROV 5:3-13]
"I, Wisdom, dwell with experience, and judicious knowledge
I attain. (The fear of the LORD is to hate evil;) Pride,
arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth I hate. Mine are
counsel and advice; Mine is strength; I am understanding. By me
kings reign, and lawgivers establish justice; By me princes
govern, and nobles; all the rulers of earth. Those who love
me I also love, and those who seek me find me. With me are riches
and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. My fruit is better than
gold, yes, than pure gold, and my revenue than choice silver." [PROV
8:12-19]
A gracious woman wins esteem, but she who hates virtue is
covered with shame. (The slothful become impoverished, but the
diligent gain wealth.) [PROV 11:16]
Poverty and shame befall the man who disregards correction, but
he who heeds reproof is honored. [PROV 13:18]
The fear of the LORD is training for wisdom, and humility goes
before honors. [PROV 15:33]
The wise man is esteemed for his discernment, yet pleasing
speech increases his persuasiveness. [PROV 16:21]
Before his downfall a man's heart is haughty, but humility goes
before honors. [PROV 18:12]
It is honorable for a man to shun strife, while every fool
starts a quarrel. [PROV 20:3]
He who pursues justice and kindness will find life and honor. [PROV
21:21]
A good name is more desirable than great riches, and high
esteem, than gold and silver. [PROV 22:1]
The reward of humility and fear of the LORD is riches, honor
and life. [PROV 22:4]
Claim no honor in the king's presence, nor occupy the place of great men;
For it is better that you be told, "Come up closer!" than that you be humbled before the prince.
[PROV 25:6-7]
To eat too much honey is not good; nor to seek honor after
honor. [PROV 25:27]
Like snow in summer, or rain in harvest, honor for a fool is
out of place. [PROV 26:1]
Like one who entangles the stone in the sling is he who gives
honor to a fool. [PROV 26:8]
Man's pride causes his humiliation, but he who is humble of
spirit obtains honor. [PROV 29:23]
There is another evil which I have seen under the sun, and it weighs heavily upon man: there is the man to whom God gives riches and property and honor, so that he lacks none of all the things he craves; yet God does not grant him power to partake of them, but a stranger devours them. This is vanity and a dire plague.
[ECCL 6:1-2]
But the children of adulterers will remain without issue, and
the progeny of an unlawful bed will disappear. For should they
attain long life, they will be held in no esteem, and dishonored
will their old age be at last; While should they die abruptly,
they have no hope nor comfort in the day of scrutiny; for dire is
the end of the wicked generation. [WISDOM 3:16-19]
But the just man, though he die early, shall be at rest. For
the age that is honorable comes not with the passing of time, nor
can it be measured in terms of years. Rather, understanding is the
hoary crown for men, and an unsullied life, the attainment of old
age. [WISDOM 4:7-9]
If, then, you find pleasure in throne and scepter, you princes
of the peoples, honor Wisdom, that you may reign as kings forever.
[WISDOM 6:21]
And if riches be a desirable possession in life, what is more
rich than Wisdom, who produces all things? And if prudence renders
service, who in the world is a better craftsman than she? Or if
one loves justice, the fruits of her works are virtues; For she
teaches moderation and prudence, justice and fortitude, and
nothing in life is more useful for men than these. Or again, if
one yearns for copious learning, she knows the things of old, and
infers those yet to come. She understands the turns of phrases and
the solutions of riddles; signs and wonders she knows in advance
and the outcome of times and ages. So I determined to take her to
live with me, knowing that she would be my counselor while all was
well, and my comfort in care and grief. For her sake I should have
glory among the masses, and esteem from the elders, though I be
but a youth. I should become keen in judgment, and should be a
marvel before rulers. [Taken from WISDOM 8:5-11]
Indeed, though one be perfect among the sons of men, if Wisdom,
who comes from you, be not with him, he shall be held in no
esteem. [WISDOM 9:6]
And the masses, drawn by the charm of the workmanship, soon
thought he should be worshiped who shortly before was honored as a
man. And this became a snare for mankind, that men enslaved to
either grief or tyranny conferred the incommunicable name on
stocks and stones. Then it was not enough for them to err in their
knowledge of God; but even though they live in a great war of
ignorance, they call such evils peace. [WISDOM 14:20-22]
Children, pay heed to a father's right; do so that you may
live. For the LORD sets a father in honor over his children; a
mother's authority he confirms over her sons. He who honors his
father atones for sins; he stores up riches who reveres his
mother. He who honors his father is gladdened by children, and
when he prays he is heard. He who reveres his father will live a
long life; he obeys the LORD who brings comfort to his mother. He
who fears the LORD honors his father, and serves his parents as
rulers. In word and deed honor your father that his blessing may
come upon you; For a father's blessing gives a family firm roots,
but a mother's curse uproots the growing plant. Glory not in your
father's shame, for his shame is no glory to you! His father's
honor is a man's glory; disgrace for her children, a mother's
shame. [SIRACH 3:1-11]
There is a sense of shame laden with guilt, and a shame that
merits honor and respect. [SIRACH 4:21]
Honor and dishonor through talking! A man's tongue can be his
downfall. [SIRACH 5:15]
Seek not from the LORD authority, nor from the king a place of
honor. [SIRACH 7:4]
Hate not laborious tasks, nor farming, which was ordained by
the Most High. Do not esteem yourself better than your fellows;
remember, his wrath will not delay. More and more, humble your
pride; what awaits man is worms. [SIRACH 7:15-17]
With your whole heart honor your father; your mother's
birthpangs forget not. [SIRACH 7:27]
Honor God and respect the priest; give him his portion as you
have been commanded: First fruits and contributions, due
sacrifices and holy offerings. [SIRACH 7:31]
Skilled artisans are esteemed for their deftness; but the ruler
of his people is the skilled sage. [SIRACH 9:17]
Whose offspring can be in honor? Those of men. Which offspring
are in honor? Those who fear God. Whose offspring can be in
disgrace? Those of men. Which offspring are in disgrace? Those who
transgress the commandments. [SIRACH 10:19]
Among brethren their leader is in honor; he who fears God is in
honor among his people. [SIRACH 10:20]
It is not just to despise a man who is wise but poor, nor
proper to honor any sinner. [SIRACH 10:22]
The prince, the ruler, the judge are in honor; but none is
greater than he who fears God. [SIRACH 10:23]
My son, with humility have self-esteem; prize yourself as you deserve.
Who will acquit him who condemns himself? who will honor him who discredits himself?
[SIRACH 10:27-28]
The poor man is honored for his wisdom as the rich man is honored for his wealth;
Honored in poverty, how much more so in wealth! Dishonored in wealth, in poverty how much the more!
[SIRACH 10:29-30]
The exalted often fall into utter disgrace; the honored are
given into enemy hands. [SIRACH 11:6]
Many a man who asks for a loan adds to the burdens of those who
help him; When he borrows, he kisses the lender's hand and speaks
with respect of his creditor's wealth; But when payment is due he
disappoints him and says he is helpless to meet the claim. If the
lender is able to recover barely half, he considers this an
achievement; If not, he is cheated of his wealth and acquires an
enemy at no extra charge; With curses and insults the borrower
pays him back, with abuse instead of honor. Many refuse to lend,
not out of meanness, but from fear of being cheated. To a poor
man, however, be generous; keep him not waiting for your alms;
Because of the precept, help the needy, and in their want, do not
send them away empty-handed. [SIRACH 29:4-9]
When among your elders be not forward, and with officials be not too insistent.
Like the lightning that flashes before a storm is the esteem that shines on modesty.
[SIRACH 32:9-10]
Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and
God it was who established his profession. [SIRACH 38:1]
From him was to spring the man who won the favor of all: Dear
to God and men, Moses, whose memory is held in benediction. God's
honor devolved upon him, and the Lord strengthened him with
fearful powers; God wrought swift miracles at his words and
sustained him in the king's presence. He gave him the commandments
for his people, and revealed to him his glory. For his
trustworthiness and meekness God selected him from all mankind; He
permitted him to hear his voice, and led him into the cloud,
Where, face to face, he gave him the commandments, the law of life
and understanding, That he might teach his precepts to Jacob, his
judgments and decrees to Israel. He raised up also, like Moses in
holiness, his brother Aaron, of the tribe of Levi. He made him
perpetual in his office when he bestowed on him the priesthood of
his people; He established him in honor and crowned him with lofty
majesty [Taken from SIRACH 45:1-7]
I will make striplings their princes; the fickle shall govern them,
And the people shall oppress one another, yes, every man his neighbor.
The child shall be bold toward the elder, and the base toward the honorable.
[Taken from ISA 3:4-5]
On that day, The branch of the LORD will be luster and glory,
and the fruit of the earth will be honor and splendor for the
survivors of Israel. [ISA 4:2]
Woe to those who are wise in their own sight, and prudent in
their own esteem! [ISA 5:21]
On that day I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah; I
will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and
give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the
inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. I will place
the key of the House of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no
one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open. I will fix him
like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family;
On him shall hang all the glory of his family: descendants and
offspring, all the little dishes, from bowls to jugs. On that day,
says the LORD of hosts, the peg fixed in a sure spot shall give
way, break off and fall, and the weight that hung on it shall be
done away with; for the LORD has spoken. [ISA 22:20-25]
Who has planned such a thing against Tyre, the bestower of
crowns, Whose merchants are princes, whose traders are the earth's
honored men? The LORD of hosts has planned it, to disgrace all
pride of majesty, to degrade all the earth's honored men. [ISA 23:8-9]
O LORD, you are my God, I will extol you and praise your name;
For you have fulfilled your wonderful plans of old, faithful and
true. For you have made the city a heap, the fortified city a
ruin; The castle of the insolent is a city no more, nor ever to be
rebuilt. Therefore a strong people will honor you, fierce nations
will fear you. For you are a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the
needy in distress; Shelter from the rain, shade from the heat. As
with the cold rain, as with the desert heat, even so you quell the
uproar of the wanton. [ISA 25:1-5]
The Lord said: Since this people draws near with words only and
honors me with their lips alone, though their hearts are far from
me, And their reverence for me has become routine observance of
the precepts of men, Therefore I will again deal with this people
in surprising and wondrous fashion: The wisdom of its wise men
shall perish and the understanding of its prudent men be hid. Woe
to those who would hide their plans too deep for the LORD! Who
work in the dark, saying, "Who sees us, or who knows
us?" Your perversity is as though the potter were taken to be
the clay: As though what is made should say of its maker, "He
made me not!" Or the vessel should say of the potter,
"He does not understand." [ISA 29:13-16]
No more will the fool be called noble, nor the trickster be
considered honorable. [ISA 32:5]
Wild beasts honor me, jackals and ostriches, For I put water in
the desert and rivers in the wasteland for my chosen people to
drink, The people whom I formed for myself, that they might
announce my praise. Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob, for you
grew weary of me, O Israel. [ISA 43:20-22]
He was spurned and avoided by men, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, One of those from whom men hide their
faces, spurned, and we held him in no esteem. Yet it was our
infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, While we
thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins, Upon
him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we
were healed. [Taken from ISA 53:3-5]
If you hold back your foot on the sabbath from following your
own pursuits on my holy day; If you call the sabbath a delight,
and the LORD'S holy day honorable; If you honor it by not
following your ways, seeking your own interests, or speaking with
malice - Then you shall delight in the LORD, and I will make you
ride on the heights of the earth; I will nourish you with the
heritage of Jacob, your father, for the mouth of the LORD has
spoken. [ISA 58:13-14]
At that time they will call Jerusalem the LORD'S throne; there
all nations will be gathered together to honor the name of the
LORD at Jerusalem, and they will walk no longer in their
hardhearted wickedness. [JER 3:17]
Even though our crimes bear witness against us, take action, O
LORD, for the honor of your name - Even though our rebellions are
many, though we have sinned against you. [JER 14:7]
Through the sin of which she is guilty, Jerusalem is defiled;
All who esteemed her think her vile now that they see her
nakedness; She herself groans and turns away. [LAM 1:8]
Hilkiah and his wife praised God for their daughter Susanna, as
did Joakim her husband and all her relatives, because she was
found innocent of any shameful deed. And from that day onward
Daniel was greatly esteemed by the people. [DAN 13:63-64]
Daniel was the king's favorite and was held in higher esteem
than any of the friends of the king. [DAN 14:2]
The women of my people you drive out from their pleasant
houses; From their children you take away forever the honor I gave
them. [MICAH 2:9]
A son honors his father, and a servant fears his master; If
then I am a father, where is the honor due to me? And if I am a
master, where is the reverence due to me? [Taken from MAL 1:6]
He came to his native place and taught the people in their
synagogue. They were astonished and said, "Where did this man
get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter's son?
Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph,
Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this
man get all this?" And they took offense at him. But Jesus
said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his
native place and in his own house." And he did not work many
mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith. [MT 13:54-58] [Note:
Some ancient languages have no word for cousin (and other
relatives) so the terms "brothers" and
"sisters" may be used to refer to relatives other than
blood brothers and blood sisters. The use of this terminology does
not mean that Jesus had blood brothers and blood sisters, which of
course he didn't since Mary is an ever virgin. For more

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and
said, "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the
elders? They do not wash (their) hands when they eat a meal."
He said to them in reply, "And why do you break the
commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said,
'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or
mother shall die.' But you say, 'Whoever says to father or mother,
"Any support you might have had from me is dedicated to
God," need not honor his father.' You have nullified the word
of God for the sake of your tradition. Hypocrites, well did Isaiah
prophesy about you when he said: 'This people honors me with their
lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship
me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.'" He summoned the
crowd and said to them, "Hear and understand. It is not what
enters one's mouth that defiles that person; but what comes out of
the mouth is what defiles one." [Taken from MT 15:1-11]
Now someone approached him and said, "Teacher, what good
must I do to gain eternal life?" He answered him, "Why
do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If
you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." He asked
him, "Which ones?" And Jesus replied, "'You shall
not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you
shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother';
and 'you shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" The young
man said to him, "All of these I have observed. What do I
still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be
perfect, go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you
will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When the
young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many
possessions. [MT 19:16-22]
Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying,
"The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the
chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever
they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach
but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens (hard to
carry) and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift
a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen.
They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They
love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,
greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi.' As for you,
do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you are
all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one
Father in heaven. Do not be called 'Master'; you have but one
master, the Messiah. The greatest among you must be your servant.
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles
himself will be exalted." [MT 23:1-12] [Note: Readers are
again cautioned about the dangers of literal interpretation. In Scripture, we are repeatedly exhorted to honor our mothers and
fathers and Jesus himself refers to earthly fathers as
"father". Elsewhere in the New Testament, the term
"father" is used - even for those who are not
blood relatives, for example: "My brothers and fathers, listen to what I am about to say to you in my defense."
(ACTS 22:1) and "Even if you should have countless guides to Christ, yet you do not have many fathers, for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel."
(1COR 4:15).]
He departed from there and came to his native place,
accompanied by his disciples. When the sabbath came he began to
teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished.
They said, "Where did this man get all this? What kind of
wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his
hands! Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother
of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters
here with us?" And they took offense at him. Jesus said to
them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native
place and among his own kin and in his own house." So he was
not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few
sick people by laying his hands on them. [MK 6:1-5] [Note: Some
ancient languages have no word for cousin (and other relatives) so
the terms "brothers" and "sisters" may be used
to refer to relatives other than blood brothers and blood sisters.

brothers and blood sisters, which of course he didn't since Mary
is an ever virgin. For more information on this topic, visit the Non-Catholics

So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, "Why do your
disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a
meal with unclean hands?" He responded, "Well did Isaiah
prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people
honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; In
vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.'
You disregard God's commandment but cling to human
tradition." He went on to say, "How well you have set
aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your tradition!
For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever
curses father or mother shall die.' Yet you say, 'If a person says
to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me
is qorban"' (meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do
nothing more for his father or mother. You nullify the word of God
in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do
many such things." He summoned the crowd again and said to
them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that
enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things
that come out from within are what defile." [Taken from MK 7:5-15]
As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down
before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to
inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him, "Why do you
call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the
commandments: 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery;
you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall
not defraud; honor your father and your mother.'" He replied
and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from
my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him,
"You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and
give to (the) poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then
come, follow me." At that statement his face fell, and he
went away sad, for he had many possessions. [MK 10:17-22]
In the course of his teaching he said, "Beware of the
scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings
in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of
honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a
pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe
condemnation." [MK 12:38-40]
Woe to you Pharisees! You love the seat of honor in synagogues
and greetings in marketplaces. [LK 11:43]
He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how
they were choosing the places of honor at the table. "When
you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at
table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you
may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you
may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then
you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.
Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that
when the host comes to you he may say, 'My friend, move up to a
higher position.' Then you will enjoy the esteem of your
companions at the table. For everyone who exalts himself will be
humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." [LK
14:7-11]
The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all these things and sneered at him.
And he said to them, "You justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God."
[LK 16:14-15]
An official asked him this question, "Good teacher, what
must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him,
"Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You
know the commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery; you shall
not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness;
honor your father and your mother.'" And he replied,
"All of these I have observed from my youth." When Jesus
heard this he said to him, "There is still one thing left for
you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you
will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." But
when he heard this he became quite sad, for he was very rich. [LK
18:18-23]
Then, within the hearing of all the people, he said to (his)
disciples, "Be on guard against the scribes, who like to go
around in long robes and love greetings in marketplaces, seats of
honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour
the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers.
They will receive a very severe condemnation." [LK 20:45-47]
After the two days, he left there for Galilee. For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his native place. When he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, since they had seen all he had done in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves had gone to the feast.
[JN 4:43-45]
Jesus answered and said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to
you, a son cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees
his father doing; for what he does, his son will do also. For the
Father loves his Son and shows him everything that he himself
does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you
may be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives
life, so also does the Son give life to whomever he wishes. Nor
does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to his
Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.
Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent
him." [Taken from JN 5:19-23]
The Jews answered and said to him, "Are we not right in
saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed?" Jesus
answered, "I am not possessed; I honor my Father, but you
dishonor me. I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it
and he is the one who judges. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever
keeps my word will never see death." [JN 8:48-51]
"Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there
also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me." [JN
12:26]
Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon's portico. None of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them. [ACTS
5:12-13]
Herod, after instituting a search but not finding him, ordered
the guards tried and executed. Then he left Judea to spend some
time in Caesarea. He had long been very angry with the people of
Tyre and Sidon, who now came to him in a body. After winning over
Blastus, the king's chamberlain, they sued for peace because their
country was supplied with food from the king's territory. On an
appointed day, Herod, attired in royal robes, (and) seated on the
rostrum, addressed them publicly. The assembled crowd cried out,
"This is the voice of a god, not of a man." At once the
angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not ascribe the
honor to God, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last. But
the word of God continued to spread and grow. [ACTS 12:19-24]
Then some itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to invoke the name
of the Lord Jesus over those with evil spirits, saying, "I
adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." When the seven
sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, tried to do this, the evil
spirit said to them in reply, "Jesus I recognize, Paul I
know, but who are you?" The person with the evil spirit then
sprang at them and subdued them all. He so overpowered them that
they fled naked and wounded from that house. When this became
known to all the Jews and Greeks who lived in Ephesus, fear fell
upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in great
esteem. Many of those who had become believers came forward and
openly acknowledged their former practices. Moreover, a large
number of those who had practiced magic collected their books and
burned them in public. They calculated their value and found it to
be fifty thousand silver pieces. Thus did the word of the Lord
continue to spread with influence and power. [ACTS 19:13-20]
They paid us great honor and when we eventually set sail they
brought us the provisions we needed. [ACTS 28:10]
Therefore, you are without excuse, every one of you who passes
judgment. For by the standard by which you judge another you
condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the very same things.
We know that the judgment of God on those who do such things is
true. Do you suppose, then, you who judge those who engage in such
things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape the judgment
of God? Or do you hold his priceless kindness, forbearance, and
patience in low esteem, unaware that the kindness of God would
lead you to repentance? By your stubbornness and impenitent heart,
you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and
revelation of the just judgment of God, who will repay everyone
according to his works: eternal life to those who seek glory,
honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works, but
wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey
wickedness. Yes, affliction and distress will come upon every
human being who does evil, Jew first and then Greek. But there
will be glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good, Jew
first and then Greek. There is no partiality with God. [ROM 2:1-11]
Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is
good; love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one
another in showing honor. Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in
spirit, serve the Lord. [Taken from ROM 12:9-11]
This is why you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.
[ROM 13:6-7]
We are fools on Christ's account, but you are wise in Christ;
we are weak, but you are strong; you are held in honor, but we in
disrepute. [1COR 4:10]
As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of
the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one
Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks,
slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one
Spirit. Now the body is not a single part, but many. If a foot
should say, "Because I am not a hand I do not belong to the
body," it does not for this reason belong any less to the
body. Or if an ear should say, "Because I am not an eye I do
not belong to the body," it does not for this reason belong
any less to the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would
the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the
sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of
them, in the body as he intended. If they were all one part, where
would the body be? But as it is, there are many parts, yet one
body. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need
you," nor again the head to the feet, "I do not need
you." Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker
are all the more necessary, and those parts of the body that we
consider less honorable we surround with greater honor, and our
less presentable parts are treated with greater propriety, whereas
our more presentable parts do not need this. But God has so
constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is
without it, so that there may be no division in the body, but that
the parts may have the same concern for one another. If (one) part
suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all
the parts share its joy. [1COR 12:12-26]
This we desire to avoid, that anyone blame us about this lavish gift administered by us,
for we are concerned for what is honorable not only in the sight of the Lord but also in the sight of others.
[2COR 8:20-21]
Children, obey your parents (in the Lord), for this is right.
"Honor your father and mother." This is the first
commandment with a promise, "that it may go well with you and
that you may have a long life on earth." Fathers, do not
provoke your children to anger, but bring them up with the
training and instruction of the Lord. [EPH 6:1-4]
With regard to Epaphroditus, my brother and co-worker and
fellow soldier, your messenger and minister in my need, I consider
it necessary to send him to you. For he has been longing for all
of you and was distressed because you heard that he was ill. He
was indeed ill, close to death; but God had mercy on him, not just
on him but also on me, so that I might not have sorrow upon
sorrow. I send him therefore with the greater eagerness, so that,
on seeing him, you may rejoice again, and I may have less anxiety.
Welcome him then in the Lord with all joy and hold such people in
esteem, because for the sake of the work of Christ he came close
to death, risking his life to make up for those services to me
that you could not perform. [PHIL 2:25-30]
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these
things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with
you. [PHIL 4:8-9]
This is the will of God, your holiness: that you refrain from
immorality, that each of you know how to acquire a wife for
himself in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion as do the
Gentiles who do not know God; not to take advantage of or exploit
a brother in this matter, for the Lord is an avenger in all these
things, as we told you before and solemnly affirmed. For God did
not call us to impurity but to holiness. Therefore, whoever
disregards this, disregards not a human being but God, who (also)
gives his Holy Spirit to you. [1THES 4:3-8]
We ask you, brothers, to respect those who are laboring among you and who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you, and to show esteem for them with special love on account of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
[1THES 5:12-13]
To the king of ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God,
honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. [1TM 1:17]
Honor widows who are truly widows. But if a widow has children
or grandchildren, let these first learn to perform their religious
duty to their own family and to make recompense to their parents,
for this is pleasing to God. The real widow, who is all alone, has
set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers
night and day. But the one who is self-indulgent is dead while she
lives. [1TM 5:3-6]
Presbyters who preside well deserve double honor, especially
those who toil in preaching and teaching. For the scripture says,
"You shall not muzzle an ox when it is threshing," and,
"A worker deserves his pay." Do not accept an accusation
against a presbyter unless it is supported by two or three
witnesses. [1TM 5:17-19]
I charge (you) before God, who gives life to all things, and
before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for
the noble confession, to keep the commandment without stain or
reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ that the
blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, the
King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who
dwells in unapproachable light, and whom no human being has seen
or can see. To him be honor and eternal power. Amen. [1TM 6:13-16]
For it was not to angels that he subjected the world to come,
of which we are speaking. Instead, someone has testified
somewhere: "What is man that you are mindful of him, or the
son of man that you care for him? You made him for a little while
lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor,
subjecting all things under his feet." In
"subjecting" all things (to him), he left nothing not
"subject to him." Yet at present we do not see "all
things subject to him," but we do see Jesus "crowned
with glory and honor" because he suffered death, he who
"for a little while" was made "lower than the
angels," that by the grace of God he might taste death for
everyone. [Taken from HEB 2:5-9]
Therefore, holy "brothers," sharing in a heavenly
calling, reflect on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our
confession, who was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as
Moses was "faithful in (all) his house." But he is
worthy of more "glory" than Moses, as the founder of a
house has more "honor" than the house itself. Every
house is founded by someone, but the founder of all is God. Moses
was "faithful in all his house" as a "servant"
to testify to what would be spoken, but Christ was faithful as a
son placed over his house. We are his house, if (only) we hold
fast to our confidence and pride in our hope. [HEB 3:1-6]
Every high priest is taken from among men and made their
representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he
himself is beset by weakness and so, for this reason, must make
sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes
this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron
was. In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in
becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to him:
"You are my son; this day I have begotten you"; just as
he says in another place: "You are a priest forever according
to the order of Melchizedek." [HEB 5:1-6]
Let marriage be honored among all and the marriage bed be kept
undefiled, for God will judge the immoral and adulterers. [HEB
13:4]
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in
his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that
is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you
who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a
salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time. In this
you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to
suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your
faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though
tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at
the revelation of Jesus Christ. [1PT 1:3-7]
Give honor to all, love the community, fear God, honor the
king. [1PT 2:17]
Likewise, you husbands should live with your wives in
understanding, showing honor to the weaker female sex, since we
are joint heirs of the gift of life, so that your prayers may not
be hindered. [1PT 3:7]
We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to
you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been
eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from
God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the
majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am
well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven
while we were with him on the holy mountain. [Taken from 2PT 1:16-18]
In front of the throne was something that resembled a sea of
glass like crystal. In the center and around the throne, there
were four living creatures covered with eyes in front and in back.
The first creature resembled a lion, the second was like a calf,
the third had a face like that of a human being, and the fourth
looked like an eagle in flight. The four living creatures, each of
them with six wings, were covered with eyes inside and out. Day
and night they do not stop exclaiming: "Holy, holy, holy is
the Lord God almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to
come." Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and
thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and
ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on
the throne and worship him, who lives forever and ever. They throw
down their crowns before the throne, exclaiming: "Worthy are
you, Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you
created all things; because of your will they came to be and were
created." [Taken from RV 4:6-11]
I looked again and heard the voices of many angels who
surrounded the throne and the living creatures and the elders.
They were countless in number, and they cried out in a loud voice:
"Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and
riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing."
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the
earth and in the sea, everything in the universe, cry out:
"To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be
blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever." The
four living creatures answered, "Amen," and the elders
fell down and worshiped. [RV 5:11-14]
After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one
could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They
stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes
and holding palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud
voice: "Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the
throne, and from the Lamb." All the angels stood around the
throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They
prostrated themselves before the throne, worshiped God, and
exclaimed: "Amen. Blessing and glory, wisdom and
thanksgiving, honor, power, and might be to our God forever and
ever. Amen." [RV 7:9-12]
