After their release they went back to their own
people and reported what the chief priests and elders had told
them. And when they heard it, they raised their voices to God with
one accord and said, "Sovereign Lord, maker of heaven and
earth and the sea and all that is in them, you said by the Holy Spirit
through the mouth of our father David, your servant: 'Why did the
Gentiles rage and the peoples entertain folly? The kings of the
earth took their stand and the princes gathered together against
the Lord and against his anointed.' Indeed they gathered in this
city against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed, Herod and
Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the peoples of
Israel, to do what your hand and (your) will had long ago planned
to take place. And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and
enable your servants to speak your word with all boldness, as you
stretch forth (your) hand to heal, and signs and wonders are done
through the name of your holy servant Jesus." As they prayed,
the place where they were gathered shook, and they were all filled
with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with
boldness. [ACTS 4:23-31]
Now Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great
wonders and signs among the people. Certain members of the
so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and
people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with
Stephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit
with which he spoke. Then they instigated some men to say,
"We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses
and God." They stirred up the people, the elders, and the
scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the
Sanhedrin. They presented false witnesses who testified,
"This man never stops saying things against (this) holy place
and the law. For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the
Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses
handed down to us." All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked
intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an
angel. [ACTS 6:8-15]
There was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias, and the Lord
said to him in a vision, "Ananias." He answered,
"Here I am, Lord." The Lord said to him, "Get up
and go to the street called Straight and ask at the house of Judas
for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is there praying, and (in a
vision) he has seen a man named Ananias come in and lay (his)
hands on him, that he may regain his sight." But Ananias
replied, "Lord, I have heard from many sources about this
man, what evil things he has done to your holy ones in Jerusalem.
And here he has authority from the chief priests to imprison all
who call upon your name." But the Lord said to him, "Go,
for this man is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name
before Gentiles, kings, and Israelites, and I will show him what
he will have to suffer for my name." [ACTS 9:10-16]
As Peter was passing through every region, he went down to the
holy ones living in Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, who
had been confined to bed for eight years, for he was paralyzed.
Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up
and make your bed." He got up at once. And all the
inhabitants of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the
Lord. Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which
translated means Dorcas). She was completely occupied with good
deeds and almsgiving. Now during those days she fell sick and
died, so after washing her, they laid (her) out in a room
upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that
Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request,
"Please come to us without delay." So Peter got up and
went with them. When he arrived, they took him to the room
upstairs where all the widows came to him weeping and showing him
the tunics and cloaks that Dorcas had made while she was with
them. Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed. Then he
turned to her body and said, "Tabitha, rise up." She
opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. He gave her his hand and
raised her up, and when he had called the holy ones and the
widows, he presented her alive. This became known all over Joppa,
and many came to believe in the Lord. [ACTS 9:32-42]
As Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said (to him),
"There are three men here looking for you. So get up, go
downstairs, and accompany them without hesitation, because I have
sent them." Then Peter went down to the men and said, "I
am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your being
here?" They answered, "Cornelius, a centurion, an
upright and God-fearing man, respected by the whole Jewish nation,
was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to
hear what you have to say." [ACTS 10:19-22]
"But now I am standing trial because of my hope in the
promise made by God to our ancestors. Our twelve tribes hope to
attain to that promise as they fervently worship God day and
night; and on account of this hope I am accused by Jews, O king.
Why is it thought unbelievable among you that God raises the dead?
I myself once thought that I had to do many things against the
name of Jesus the Nazorean, and I did so in Jerusalem. I
imprisoned many of the holy ones with the authorization I received
from the chief priests, and when they were to be put to death I
cast my vote against them. Many times, in synagogue after
synagogue, I punished them in an attempt to force them to
blaspheme; I was so enraged against them that I pursued them even
to foreign cities. On one such occasion I was traveling to
Damascus with the authorization and commission of the chief
priests. At midday, along the way, O king, I saw a light from the
sky, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my traveling
companions. We all fell to the ground and I heard a voice saying
to me in Hebrew, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is
hard for you to kick against the goad.' And I said, 'Who are you,
sir?' And the Lord replied, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.
Get up now, and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you for
this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness of what you
have seen (of me) and what you will be shown. I shall deliver you
from this people and from the Gentiles to whom I send you, to open
their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light and from the
power of Satan to God, so that they may obtain forgiveness of sins
and an inheritance among those who have been consecrated by faith
in me.' And so, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the
heavenly vision." [ACTS 26:6-19]
Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set
apart for the gospel of God, which he promised previously through
his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel about his Son,
descended from David according to the flesh, but established as
Son of God in power according to the spirit of holiness through
resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him we
have received the grace of apostleship, to bring about the
obedience of faith, for the sake of his name, among all the
Gentiles, among whom are you also, who are called to belong to
Jesus Christ; to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to be
holy. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ. [ROM 1:1-7]
But now we are released from the law, dead to what held us
captive, so that we may serve in the newness of the spirit and not
under the obsolete letter. What then can we say? That the law is
sin? Of course not! Yet I did not know sin except through the law,
and I did not know what it is to covet except that the law said,
"You shall not covet." But sin, finding an opportunity
in the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetousness.
Apart from the law sin is dead. I once lived outside the law, but
when the commandment came, sin became alive; then I died, and the
commandment that was for life turned out to be death for me. For
sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and
through it put me to death. So then the law is holy, and the
commandment is holy and righteous and good. [ROM 7:6-12]
In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our
weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the
Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one
who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit,
because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will. [ROM
8:26-27]
If the firstfruits are holy, so is the whole batch of dough;
and if the root is holy, so are the branches. [ROM 11:16]
I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer
your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your
spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be
transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what
is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. [ROM
12:1-2]
Contribute to the needs of the holy ones, exercise hospitality.
[ROM 12:13]
Now, however, I am going to Jerusalem to minister to the holy
ones. For Macedonia and Achaia have decided to make some
contribution for the poor among the holy ones in Jerusalem; they
decided to do it, and in fact they are indebted to them, for if
the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they
ought also to serve them in material blessings. So when I have
completed this and safely handed over this contribution to them, I
shall set out by way of you to Spain; and I know that in coming to
you I shall come in the fullness of Christ's blessing. I urge you,
(brothers,) by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the
Spirit, to join me in the struggle by your prayers to God on my
behalf, that I may be delivered from the disobedient in Judea, and
that my ministry for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the holy ones,
so that I may come to you with joy by the will of God and be
refreshed together with you. The God of peace be with all of you.
Amen. [ROM 15:25-33]
I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is (also) a minister of the church at Cenchreae, that you may receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the holy ones, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a benefactor to many and to me as well.
[ROM 16:1-2] [Note: The term "minister" in the New
Testament is used frequently to denote "servant" and "attendant" and should not be confused with today's use
of the term. Paul has clearly indicated roles for women as
in 1COR 14:34-5: "As in all the churches of the holy ones,
women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not allowed
to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says."
and in 1TM 2:11-12: "A woman must receive instruction
silently and under complete control. I do not permit a woman to
teach or to have authority over a man. She must be quiet."]
Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ
greet you. [ROM 16:16]
Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, to the church of God that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy, with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.
[1COR 1:1-2]
Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is
holy. [1COR 3:16-17]
How can any one of you with a case against another dare to
bring it to the unjust for judgment instead of to the holy ones?
Do you not know that the holy ones will judge the world? If the
world is to be judged by you, are you unqualified for the lowest
law courts? Do you not know that we will judge angels? Then why
not everyday matters? If, therefore, you have courts for everyday
matters, do you seat as judges people of no standing in the
church? I say this to shame you. Can it be that there is not one
among you wise enough to be able to settle a case between
brothers? But rather brother goes to court against brother, and
that before unbelievers? Now indeed (then) it is, in any case, a
failure on your part that you have lawsuits against one another.
Why not rather put up with injustice? Why not rather let
yourselves be cheated? Instead, you inflict injustice and cheat,
and this to brothers. Do you not know that the unjust will not
inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither
fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor
practicing homosexuals nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards
nor slanderers nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. That
is what some of you used to be; but now you have had yourselves
washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the
Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. [1COR 6:1-11]
To the rest I say (not the Lord): if any brother has a wife who
is an unbeliever, and she is willing to go on living with him, he
should not divorce her; and if any woman has a husband who is an
unbeliever, and he is willing to go on living with her, she should
not divorce her husband. For the unbelieving husband is made holy
through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy through
the brother. Otherwise your children would be unclean, whereas in
fact they are holy. [Taken from 1COR 7:12-14]
I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is
anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord.
But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he
may please his wife, and he is divided. An unmarried woman or a
virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be
holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other hand,
is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her
husband. I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose
a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence
to the Lord without distraction. [1COR 7:32-35]
As in all the churches of the holy ones, women should keep
silent in the churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but
should be subordinate, as even the law says. But if they want to
learn anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is
improper for a woman to speak in the church. [Taken from 1COR
14:33-35]
Now in regard to the collection for the holy ones, you also
should do as I ordered the churches of Galatia. On the first day
of the week each of you should set aside and save whatever one can
afford, so that collections will not be going on when I come. And
when I arrive, I shall send those whom you have approved with
letters of recommendation to take your gracious gift to Jerusalem.
If it seems fitting that I should go also, they will go with me. [1COR
16:1-4]
All the brothers greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss.
[1COR 16:20]
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and
Timothy our brother, to the church of God that is in Corinth, with
all the holy ones throughout Achaia: grace to you and peace from
God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. [2COR 1:1-2]
We cause no one to stumble in anything, in order that no fault
may be found with our ministry; on the contrary, in everything we
commend ourselves as ministers of God, through much endurance, in
afflictions, hardships, constraints, beatings, imprisonments,
riots, labors, vigils, fasts; by purity, knowledge, patience,
kindness, in a holy spirit, in unfeigned love, in truthful speech,
in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness at the right
and at the left; through glory and dishonor, insult and praise. We
are treated as deceivers and yet are truthful; as unrecognized and
yet acknowledged; as dying and behold we live; as chastised and
yet not put to death; as sorrowful yet always rejoicing; as poor
yet enriching many; as having nothing and yet possessing all
things. [2COR 6:3-10]
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves
from every defilement of flesh and spirit, making holiness perfect
in the fear of God. [2COR 7:1]
We want you to know, brothers, of the grace of God that has
been given to the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of
affliction, the abundance of their joy and their profound poverty
overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For according
to their means, I can testify, and beyond their means,
spontaneously, they begged us insistently for the favor of taking
part in the service to the holy ones, and this, not as we
expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and to us
through the will of God, so that we urged Titus that, as he had
already begun, he should also complete for you this gracious act
also. [2COR 8:1-6]
Now about the service to the holy ones, it is superfluous for
me to write to you, for I know your eagerness, about which I boast
of you to the Macedonians, that Achaia has been ready since last
year; and your zeal has stirred up most of them. Nonetheless, I
sent the brothers so that our boast about you might not prove
empty in this case, so that you might be ready, as I said, for
fear that if any Macedonians come with me and find you not ready
we might be put to shame (to say nothing of you) in this
conviction. [Taken from 2COR 9:1-4]
You are being enriched in every way for all generosity, which
through us produces thanksgiving to God, for the administration of
this public service is not only supplying the needs of the holy
ones but is also overflowing in many acts of thanksgiving to God.
Through the evidence of this service, you are glorifying God for
your obedient confession of the gospel of Christ and the
generosity of your contribution to them and to all others, while
in prayer on your behalf they long for you, because of the
surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his
indescribable gift! [Taken from 2COR 9:11-15]
Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the holy ones greet you. [2COR 13:12]
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the holy ones who are (in
Ephesus) faithful in Christ Jesus: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
[EPH 1:1-2]
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has
blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,
as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be
holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for
adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor
of his will, for the praise of the glory of his grace that he
granted us in the beloved. [EPH 1:3-6]
Therefore, I, too, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and
of your love for all the holy ones, do not cease giving thanks for
you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and
revelation resulting in knowledge of him. May the eyes of (your)
hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that
belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his
inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing
greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the
exercise of his great might, which he worked in Christ, raising
him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the
heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and
dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but
also in the one to come. And he put all things beneath his feet
and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his
body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way. [EPH
1:15-23]
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become
near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, he who made both
one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh,
abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, that he
might create in himself one new person in place of the two, thus
establishing peace, and might reconcile both with God, in one
body, through the cross, putting that enmity to death by it. He
came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those
who were near, for through him we both have access in one Spirit
to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners,
but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the
household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. Through him
the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple
sacred in the Lord; in him you also are being built together into
a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. [EPH 2:13-22]
When you read this you can understand my insight into the
mystery of Christ, which was not made known to human beings in
other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles
and prophets by the Spirit, that the Gentiles are coheirs, members
of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus
through the gospel. Of this I became a minister by the gift of
God's grace that was granted me in accord with the exercise of his
power. To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was
given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ,
and to bring to light (for all) what is the plan of the mystery
hidden from ages past in God who created all things, so that the
manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church
to the principalities and authorities in the heavens. This was
according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ
Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness of speech and confidence
of access through faith in him. So I ask you not to lose heart
over my afflictions for you; this is your glory. [EPH 3:4-13]
For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every
family in heaven and on earth is named, that he may grant you in
accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power
through his Spirit in the inner self, and that Christ may dwell in
your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love,
may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the
breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of
Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with
all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to accomplish far
more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us,
to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all
generations, forever and ever. Amen. [EPH 3:14-21]
And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as
evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy
ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son
of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of
Christ, so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and
swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery,
from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming. Rather,
living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who
is the head, Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held
together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning
of each part, brings about the body's growth and builds itself up
in love. So I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no
longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds;
darkened in understanding, alienated from the life of God because
of their ignorance, because of their hardness of heart, they have
become callous and have handed themselves over to licentiousness
for the practice of every kind of impurity to excess. That is not
how you learned Christ, assuming that you have heard of him and
were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus, that you should put away
the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through
deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and
put on the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and
holiness of truth. [EPH 4:11-24]
So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love,
as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial
offering to God for a fragrant aroma. Immorality or any impurity
or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among
holy ones, no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out
of place, but instead, thanksgiving. Be sure of this, that no
immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any
inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. [EPH 5:1-5]
Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. For
the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the
church, he himself the savior of the body. As the church is
subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their
husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ
loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her,
cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might
present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle
or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So
(also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He
who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh
but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the
church, because we are members of his body. "For this reason
a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to
his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This is a
great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.
In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and
the wife should respect her husband. [EPH 5:22-33]
With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and
supplication for all the holy ones and also for me, that speech may be given me to open my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador in chains, so that I may have the courage to speak as I must.
[EPH 6:18-20]
Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus, to all the holy ones in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the overseers and ministers:
grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
Christ. [PHIL 1:1-2]
Give my greetings to every holy one in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me send you their greetings; all the holy ones send you their greetings, especially those of Caesar's
household. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
[PHIL 4:21-23]
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
to the holy ones and faithful brothers in Christ in Colossae: grace to you and peace from God our Father. [COL
1:1-2]
We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the holy ones because of the hope reserved for you in heaven.
[Taken from COL 1:3-5]
Therefore, from the day we heard this, we do not cease praying
for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of
his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding to live in
a manner worthy of the Lord, so as to be fully pleasing, in every
good work bearing fruit and growing in the knowledge of God,
strengthened with every power, in accord with his glorious might,
for all endurance and patience, with joy giving thanks to the
Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the
holy ones in light. He delivered us from the power of darkness and
transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have
redemption, the forgiveness of sins. [COL 1:9-14]
And you who once were alienated and hostile in mind because of
evil deeds he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through his
death, to present you holy, without blemish, and irreproachable
before him, provided that you persevere in the faith, firmly
grounded, stable, and not shifting from the hope of the gospel
that you heard, which has been preached to every creature under
heaven, of which I, Paul, am a minister. [COL 1:21-23]
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I
am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on
behalf of his body, which is the church, of which I am a minister
in accordance with God's stewardship given to me to bring to
completion for you the word of God, the mystery hidden from ages
and from generations past. But now it has been manifested to his
holy ones, to whom God chose to make known the riches of the glory
of this mystery among the Gentiles; it is Christ in you, the hope
for glory. It is he whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and
teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone
perfect in Christ. For this I labor and struggle, in accord with
the exercise of his power working within me. [COL 1:24-29]
Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly:
immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is
idolatry. Because of these the wrath of God is coming (upon the
disobedient). By these you too once conducted yourselves, when you
lived in that way. But now you must put them all away: anger,
fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your mouths.
Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self
with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being
renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator. Here there is
not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian,
Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all. Put on then,
as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one
another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against
another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And
over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And
let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which
you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of
Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and
admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word
or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God the Father through him. [COL 3:5-17]
What thanksgiving, then, can we render to God for you, for all
the joy we feel on your account before our God? Night and day we
pray beyond measure to see you in person and to remedy the
deficiencies of your faith. Now may God himself, our Father, and
our Lord Jesus direct our way to you, and may the Lord make you
increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as
we have for you, so as to strengthen your hearts, to be blameless
in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord
Jesus with all his holy ones. (Amen.) [1THES 3:9-13]
This is the will of God, your holiness: that you refrain from
immorality, that each of you know how to acquire a wife for
himself in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion as do the
Gentiles who do not know God; not to take advantage of or exploit
a brother in this matter, for the Lord is an avenger in all these
things, as we told you before and solemnly affirmed. For God did
not call us to impurity but to holiness. Therefore, whoever
disregards this, disregards not a human being but God, who (also)
gives his Holy Spirit to you. [1THES 4:3-8]
May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may
you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for
the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is
faithful, and he will also accomplish it. Brothers, pray for us
(too). [1THES 5:23-25]
Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. [1THES 5:26]
For it is surely just on God's part to repay with afflictions
those who are afflicting you, and to grant rest along with us to
you who are undergoing afflictions, at the revelation of the Lord
Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels, in blazing fire,
inflicting punishment on those who do not acknowledge God and on
those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay
the penalty of eternal ruin, separated from the presence of the
Lord and from the glory of his power, when he comes to be
glorified among his holy ones and to be marveled at on that day
among all who have believed, for our testimony to you was
believed. [2THES 1:6-10]
It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray,
lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument. Similarly,
(too,) women should adorn themselves with proper conduct, with
modesty and self-control, not with braided hairstyles and gold
ornaments, or pearls, or expensive clothes, but rather, as befits
women who profess reverence for God, with good deeds. A woman must
receive instruction silently and under complete control. I do not
permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. She must
be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. Further, Adam was
not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed. But she
will be saved through motherhood, provided women persevere in
faith and love and holiness, with self-control. [1TM 2:8-15]
For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected when received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the invocation of God in
prayer. [1TM 4:4-5]
The real widow, who is all alone, has set her hope on God and
continues in supplications and prayers night and day. But the one
who is self-indulgent is dead while she lives. Command this, so
that they may be irreproachable. And whoever does not provide for
relatives and especially family members has denied the faith and
is worse than an unbeliever. Let a widow be enrolled if she is not
less than sixty years old, married only once, with a reputation
for good works, namely, that she has raised children, practiced
hospitality, washed the feet of the holy ones, helped those in
distress, involved herself in every good work. But exclude younger
widows, for when their sensuality estranges them from Christ, they
want to marry and will incur condemnation for breaking their first
pledge. And furthermore, they learn to be idlers, going about from
house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies as
well, talking about things that ought not to be mentioned. So I
would like younger widows to marry, have children, and manage a
home, so as to give the adversary no pretext for maligning us. For
some have already turned away to follow Satan. If any woman
believer has widowed relatives, she must assist them; the church
is not to be burdened, so that it will be able to help those who
are truly widows. [1TM 5:5-16]
So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me,
a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the
gospel with the strength that comes from God. He saved us and
called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according
to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus
before time began, but now made manifest through the appearance of
our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and
immortality to light through the gospel, for which I was appointed
preacher and apostle and teacher. [2TM 1:8-11]
For a bishop as God's steward must be blameless, not arrogant,
not irritable, not a drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for
sordid gain, but hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just,
holy, and self-controlled, holding fast to the true message as
taught so that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine
and to refute opponents. [TI 1:7-9]
I give thanks to my God always, remembering you in my prayers,
as I hear of the love and the faith you have in the Lord Jesus and
for all the holy ones, so that your partnership in the faith may
become effective in recognizing every good there is in us that
leads to Christ. For I have experienced much joy and encouragement
from your love, because the hearts of the holy ones have been
refreshed by you, brother. [PHLM 1:4-7]
Therefore, holy "brothers," sharing in a heavenly
calling, reflect on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our
confession, who was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as
Moses was "faithful in (all) his house." But he is
worthy of more "glory" than Moses, as the founder of a
house has more "honor" than the house itself. Every
house is founded by someone, but the founder of all is God. Moses
was "faithful in all his house" as a "servant"
to testify to what would be spoken, but Christ was faithful as a
son placed over his house. We are his house, if (only) we hold
fast to our confidence and pride in our hope. [HEB 3:1-6]
But we are sure in your regard, beloved, of better things
related to salvation, even though we speak in this way. For God is
not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have
demonstrated for his name by having served and continuing to serve
the holy ones. We earnestly desire each of you to demonstrate the
same eagerness for the fulfillment of hope until the end, so that
you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who, through
faith and patience, are inheriting the promises. [Taken from HEB
6:9-12]
Those priests were many because they were prevented by death
from remaining in office, but he, because he remains forever, has
a priesthood that does not pass away. Therefore, he is always able
to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever
to make intercession for them. It was fitting that we should have
such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from
sinners, higher than the heavens. [Taken from HEB 7:23-26]
Endure your trials as "discipline"; God treats you as
sons. For what "son" is there whom his father does not
discipline? If you are without discipline, in which all have
shared, you are not sons but bastards. Besides this, we have had
our earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them.
Should we not (then) submit all the more to the Father of spirits
and live? They disciplined us for a short time as seemed right to
them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we may share
his holiness. At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for
joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of
righteousness to those who are trained by it. So strengthen your
drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight paths for your
feet, that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed. [HEB 12:7-13]
Strive for peace with everyone, and for that holiness without
which no one will see the Lord. [HEB 12:14]
Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly, and
set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you at the
revelation of Jesus Christ. Like obedient children, do not act in
compliance with the desires of your former ignorance but, as he
who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your
conduct, for it is written, "Be holy because I (am)
holy." [1PT 1:13-16]
Rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, insincerity, envy,
and all slander; like newborn infants, long for pure spiritual
milk so that through it you may grow into salvation, for you have
tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone,
rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of
God, and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a
spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual
sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it says in
scripture: "Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a
cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall
not be put to shame." Therefore, its value is for you who
have faith, but for those without faith: "The stone which the
builders rejected has become the cornerstone," and "A
stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make
them fall." They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their
destiny. But you are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a
holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the
praises" of him who called you out of darkness into his
wonderful light. Once you were "no people" but now you
are God's people; you "had not received mercy" but now
you have received mercy. [1PT 2:1-10]
Likewise, you wives should be subordinate to your husbands so
that, even if some disobey the word, they may be won over without
a word by their wives' conduct when they observe your reverent and
chaste behavior. Your adornment should not be an external one:
braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine
clothes, but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed
in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which
is precious in the sight of God. For this is also how the holy
women who hoped in God once used to adorn themselves and were
subordinate to their husbands; thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling
him "lord." You are her children when you do what is
good and fear no intimidation. Likewise, you husbands should live
with your wives in understanding, showing honor to the weaker
female sex, since we are joint heirs of the gift of life, so that
your prayers may not be hindered. [1PT 3:1-7]
We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to
you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been
eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from
God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the
majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am
well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven
while we were with him on the holy mountain. Moreover, we possess
the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do
well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place,
until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Know
this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is
a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came
through human will; but rather human beings moved by the Holy Spirit
spoke under the influence of God. [2PT 1:16-21]
Their eyes are full of adultery and insatiable for sin. They
seduce unstable people, and their hearts are trained in greed.
Accursed children! Abandoning the straight road, they have gone
astray, following the road of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved
payment for wrongdoing, but he received a rebuke for his own
crime: a mute beast spoke with a human voice and restrained the
prophet's madness. These people are waterless springs and mists
driven by a gale; for them the gloom of darkness has been
reserved. For, talking empty bombast, they seduce with licentious
desires of the flesh those who have barely escaped from people who
live in error. They promise them freedom, though they themselves
are slaves of corruption, for a person is a slave of whatever
overcomes him. For if they, having escaped the defilements of the
world through the knowledge of (our) Lord and savior Jesus Christ,
again become entangled and overcome by them, their last condition
is worse than their first. For it would have been better for them
not to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it
to turn back from the holy commandment handed down to them. What
is expressed in the true proverb has happened to them, "The
dog returns to its own vomit," and "A bathed sow returns
to wallowing in the mire." [Taken from 2PT 2:14-22]
This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you;
through them by way of reminder I am trying to stir up your
sincere disposition, to recall the words previously spoken by the
holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and savior through
your apostles. Know this first of all, that in the last days
scoffers will come (to) scoff, living according to their own
desires and saying, "Where is the promise of his coming? From
the time when our ancestors fell asleep, everything has remained
as it was from the beginning of creation." They deliberately
ignore the fact that the heavens existed of old and earth was
formed out of water and through water by the word of God; through
these the world that then existed was destroyed, deluged with
water. The present heavens and earth have been reserved by the
same word for fire, kept for the day of judgment and of
destruction of the godless. But do not ignore this one fact,
beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a
thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise,
as some regard "delay," but he is patient with you, not
wishing that any should perish but that all should come to
repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and
then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the
elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything
done on it will be found out. Since everything is to be dissolved
in this way, what sort of persons ought (you) to be, conducting
yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the
coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be
dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. But according
to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which
righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these
things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him,
at peace. And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, as
our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him,
also wrote to you, speaking of these things as he does in all his
letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the
ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as
they do the other scriptures. [2PT 3:1-16]
Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that the
antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus
we know this is the last hour. They went out from us, but they
were not really of our number; if they had been, they would have
remained with us. Their desertion shows that none of them was of
our number. But you have the anointing that comes from the holy
one, and you all have knowledge. I write to you not because you do
not know the truth but because you do, and because every lie is
alien to the truth. Who is the liar? Whoever denies that Jesus is
the Christ. Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the
antichrist. No one who denies the Son has the Father, but whoever
confesses the Son has the Father as well. [1JN 2:18-23]
Beloved, although I was making every effort to write to you
about our common salvation, I now feel a need to write to
encourage you to contend for the faith that was once for all
handed down to the holy ones. For there have been some intruders,
who long ago were designated for this condemnation, godless
persons, who pervert the grace of our God into licentiousness and
who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. I wish to remind
you, although you know all things, that (the) Lord who once saved
a people from the land of Egypt later destroyed those who did not
believe. The angels too, who did not keep to their own domain but
deserted their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains, in
gloom, for the judgment of the great day. Likewise, Sodom,
Gomorrah, and the surrounding towns, which, in the same manner as
they, indulged in sexual promiscuity and practiced unnatural vice,
serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
Similarly, these dreamers nevertheless also defile the flesh,
scorn lordship, and revile glorious beings... These are blemishes
on your love feasts, as they carouse fearlessly and look after
themselves. They are waterless clouds blown about by winds,
fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead and uprooted. They are
like wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shameless deeds,
wandering stars for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved
forever. Enoch, of the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied
also about them when he said, "Behold, the Lord has come with
his countless holy ones to execute judgment on all and to convict
everyone for all the godless deeds that they committed and for all
the harsh words godless sinners have uttered against him."
These people are complainers, disgruntled ones who live by their
desires; their mouths utter bombast as they fawn over people to
gain advantage. [Taken from JUDE 1:3-8,12-16]
But you, beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the
apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, for they told you, "In
(the) last time there will be scoffers who will live according to
their own godless desires." These are the ones who cause
divisions; they live on the natural plane, devoid of the Spirit.
But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith;
pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God and
wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal
life. [JUDE 1:17-21]
"To the angel of the church in Philadelphia, write this:
'The holy one, the true, who holds the key of David, who opens and
no one shall close, who closes and no one shall open, says this:
"I know your works (behold, I have left an open door before
you, which no one can close). You have limited strength, and yet
you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Behold, I will
make those of the assembly of Satan who claim to be Jews and are
not, but are lying, behold I will make them come and fall
prostrate at your feet, and they will realize that I love you.
Because you have kept my message of endurance, I will keep you
safe in the time of trial that is going to come to the whole world
to test the inhabitants of the earth. I am coming quickly. Hold
fast to what you have, so that no one may take your
crown."'" [Taken from RV 3:7-11]
In front of the throne was something that resembled a sea of
glass like crystal. In the center and around the throne, there
were four living creatures covered with eyes in front and in back.
The first creature resembled a lion, the second was like a calf,
the third had a face like that of a human being, and the fourth
looked like an eagle in flight. The four living creatures, each of
them with six wings, were covered with eyes inside and out. Day
and night they do not stop exclaiming: "Holy, holy, holy is
the Lord God almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to
come." Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and
thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and
ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on
the throne and worship him, who lives forever and ever. They throw
down their crowns before the throne, exclaiming: "Worthy are
you, Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you
created all things; because of your will they came to be and were
created." [RV 4:6-11]
Then I saw standing in the midst of the throne and the four
living creatures and the elders, a Lamb that seemed to have been
slain. He had seven horns and seven eyes; these are the (seven)
spirits of God sent out into the whole world. He came and received
the scroll from the right hand of the one who sat on the throne.
When he took it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four
elders fell down before the Lamb. Each of the elders held a harp
and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the
holy ones. They sang a new hymn: "Worthy are you to receive
the scroll and to break open its seals, for you were slain and
with your blood you purchased for God those from every tribe and
tongue, people and nation. You made them a kingdom and priests for
our God, and they will reign on earth." [RV 5:6-10] [Note:
This does not mean that all Jesus' followers share in the
ministerial priesthood. As in the Old Testament, (e.g. where God
spoke to Moses: "You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a
holy nation. That is what you must tell the Israelites" - see
EX 19:6) different classes of the priesthood exist, including a
general priesthood of followers who can offer prayers,
thanksgiving, etc. to God. The passage above refers to this type
of universal priesthood, which should not be confused with
the ministerial priesthood. For additional
information on this topic, visit the non-Catholics
section.]
When he broke open the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar
the souls of those who had been slaughtered because of the witness
they bore to the word of God. They cried out in a loud voice,
"How long will it be, holy and true master, before you sit in
judgment and avenge our blood on the inhabitants of the
earth?" Each of them was given a white robe, and they were
told to be patient a little while longer until the number was
filled of their fellow servants and brothers who were going to be
killed as they had been. [RV 6:9-11]
Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a gold
censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along
with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was
before the throne. The smoke of the incense along with the prayers
of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel.
Then the angel took the censer, filled it with burning coals from
the altar, and hurled it down to the earth. There were peals of
thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. [RV
8:3-5]
Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff and I was told,
"Come and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count
those who are worshiping in it. But exclude the outer court of the
temple; do not measure it, for it has been handed over to the
Gentiles, who will trample the holy city for forty-two months. I
will commission my two witnesses to prophesy for those twelve
hundred and sixty days, wearing sackcloth." [RV 11:1-3]
Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet. There were loud voices
in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world now belongs to
our Lord and to his Anointed, and he will reign forever and
ever." The twenty-four elders who sat on their thrones before
God prostrated themselves and worshiped God and said: "We
give thanks to you, Lord God almighty, who are and who were. For
you have assumed your great power and have established your reign.
The nations raged, but your wrath has come, and the time for the
dead to be judged, and to recompense your servants, the prophets,
and the holy ones and those who fear your name, the small and the
great alike, and to destroy those who destroy the earth."
Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his
covenant could be seen in the temple. There were flashes of
lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a
violent hailstorm. [RV 11:15-19]
Then I saw a beast come out of the sea with ten horns and seven
heads; on its horns were ten diadems, and on its heads blasphemous
name(s). The beast I saw was like a leopard, but it had feet like
a bear's, and its mouth was like the mouth of a lion. To it the
dragon gave its own power and throne, along with great authority.
I saw that one of its heads seemed to have been mortally wounded,
but this mortal wound was healed. Fascinated, the whole world
followed after the beast. They worshiped the dragon because it
gave its authority to the beast; they also worshiped the beast and
said, "Who can compare with the beast or who can fight
against it?" The beast was given a mouth uttering proud
boasts and blasphemies, and it was given authority to act for
forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against
God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling and those who dwell in
heaven. It was also allowed to wage war against the holy ones and
conquer them, and it was granted authority over every tribe,
people, tongue, and nation. All the inhabitants of the earth will
worship it, all whose names were not written from the foundation
of the world in the book of life, which belongs to the Lamb who
was slain. Whoever has ears ought to hear these words. Anyone
destined for captivity goes into captivity. Anyone destined to be
slain by the sword shall be slain by the sword. Such is the
faithful endurance of the holy ones. [RV 13:1-10]
A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice,
"Anyone who worships the beast or its image, or accepts its
mark on forehead or hand, will also drink the wine of God's fury,
poured full strength into the cup of his wrath, and will be
tormented in burning sulfur before the holy angels and before the
Lamb. The smoke of the fire that torments them will rise forever
and ever, and there will be no relief day or night for those who
worship the beast or its image or accept the mark of its
name." Here is what sustains the holy ones who keep God's
commandments and their faith in Jesus. I heard a voice from heaven
say, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord
from now on." "Yes," said the Spirit, "let
them find rest from their labors, for their works accompany
them." [RV 14:9-13]
Then I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire. On
the sea of glass were standing those who had won the victory over
the beast and its image and the number that signified its name.
They were holding God's harps, and they sang the song of Moses,
the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb: "Great and
wonderful are your works, Lord God almighty. Just and true are
your ways, O king of the nations. Who will not fear you, Lord, or
glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All the nations will
come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been
revealed." [RV 15:2-4]
The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs
of water. These also turned to blood. Then I heard the angel in
charge of the waters say: "You are just, O Holy One, who are
and who were, in passing this sentence. For they have shed the
blood of the holy ones and the prophets, and you (have) given them
blood to drink; it is what they deserve." Then I heard the
altar cry out, "Yes, Lord God almighty, your judgments are
true and just." [Taken from RV 16:4-7]
Then one of the seven angels who were holding the seven bowls
came and said to me, "Come here. I will show you the judgment
on the great harlot who lives near the many waters. The kings of
the earth have had intercourse with her, and the inhabitants of
the earth became drunk on the wine of her harlotry." Then he
carried me away in spirit to a deserted place where I saw a woman
seated on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names,
with seven heads and ten horns. The woman was wearing purple and
scarlet and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls. She
held in her hand a gold cup that was filled with the abominable
and sordid deeds of her harlotry. On her forehead was written a
name, which is a mystery, "Babylon the great, the mother of
harlots and of the abominations of the earth." I saw that the
woman was drunk on the blood of the holy ones and on the blood of
the witnesses to Jesus. When I saw her I was greatly amazed. The
angel said to me, "Why are you amazed? I will explain to you
the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, the
beast with the seven heads and the ten horns. The beast that you
saw existed once but now exists no longer. It will come up from
the abyss and is headed for destruction. The inhabitants of the
earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from
the foundation of the world shall be amazed when they see the
beast, because it existed once but exists no longer, and yet it
will come again." [Taken from RV 17:1-8]
They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and
mourning: "Alas, alas, great city, in which all who had ships
at sea grew rich from her wealth. In one hour she has been ruined.
Rejoice over her, heaven, you holy ones, apostles, and prophets.
For God has judged your case against her." A mighty angel
picked up a stone like a huge millstone and threw it into the sea
and said: "With such force will Babylon the great city be
thrown down, and will never be found again. No melodies of
harpists and musicians, flutists and trumpeters, will ever be
heard in you again. No craftsmen in any trade will ever be found
in you again. No sound of the millstone will ever be heard in you
again. No light from a lamp will ever be seen in you again. No
voices of bride and groom will ever be heard in you again. Because
your merchants were the great ones of the world, all nations were
led astray by your magic potion. In her was found the blood of
prophets and holy ones and all who have been slain on the
earth." [Taken from RV 18:19-24]
Then I heard something like the sound of a great multitude or
the sound of rushing water or mighty peals of thunder, as they
said: "Alleluia! The Lord has established his reign, (our)
God, the almighty. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory.
For the wedding day of the Lamb has come, his bride has made
herself ready. She was allowed to wear a bright, clean linen
garment." (The linen represents the righteous deeds of the
holy ones.) [RV 19:6-8]
Then I saw thrones; those who sat on them were entrusted with
judgment. I also saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for
their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, and who had not
worshiped the beast or its image nor had accepted its mark on
their foreheads or hands. They came to life and they reigned with
Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to
life until the thousand years were over. This is the first
resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first
resurrection. The second death has no power over these; they will
be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for
(the) thousand years. When the thousand years are completed, Satan
will be released from his prison. He will go out to deceive the
nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather
them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. They
invaded the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the
holy ones and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and
consumed them. The Devil who had led them astray was thrown into
the pool of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet
were. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. [RV
20:4-10] [Note: The reader is reminded that there are different
classes of the priesthood and not all peoples have been
allowed to share in the ministerial priesthood. As in the Old
Testament, (e.g. where God spoke to Moses: "You shall be to
me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation. That is what you must tell
the Israelites" - see EX 19:6) different classes of the
priesthood exist, including a general priesthood of followers
who can offer prayers, thanksgiving, etc. to God. The universal
priesthood should not be confused with the ministerial priesthood. For additional information on this topic, visit the non-Catholics

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and
the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also
saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from
God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud
voice from the throne saying, "Behold, God's dwelling is with
the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his
people and God himself will always be with them (as their God). He
will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more
death or mourning, wailing or pain, (for) the old order has passed
away." The one who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I
make all things new." Then he said, "Write these words
down, for they are trustworthy and true." He said to me,
"They are accomplished. I (am) the Alpha and the Omega, the
beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give a gift from the
spring of life-giving water. The victor will inherit these gifts,
and I shall be his God, and he will be my son. But as for cowards,
the unfaithful, the depraved, murderers, the unchaste, sorcerers,
idol-worshipers, and deceivers of every sort, their lot is in the
burning pool of fire and sulfur, which is the second death." [RV
21:1-8]
One of the seven angels who held the seven bowls filled with
the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come here. I
will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." He took me in
spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city
Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. It gleamed with the
splendor of God. Its radiance was like that of a precious stone,
like jasper, clear as crystal. It had a massive, high wall, with
twelve gates where twelve angels were stationed and on which names
were inscribed, (the names) of the twelve tribes of the
Israelites. There were three gates facing east, three north, three
south, and three west. The wall of the city had twelve courses of
stones as its foundation, on which were inscribed the twelve names
of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. [Taken from RV 21:9-14]
Then he said to me, "Do not seal up the prophetic words of
this book, for the appointed time is near. Let the wicked still
act wickedly, and the filthy still be filthy. The righteous must
still do right, and the holy still be holy." "Behold, I
am coming soon. I bring with me the recompense I will give to each
according to his deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first
and the last, the beginning and the end." Blessed are they
who wash their robes so as to have the right to the tree of life
and enter the city through its gates. Outside are the dogs, the
sorcerers, the unchaste, the murderers, the idol-worshipers, and
all who love and practice deceit. "I, Jesus, sent my angel to
give you this testimony for the churches. I am the root and
offspring of David, the bright morning star." The Spirit and
the bride say, "Come." Let the hearer say,
"Come." Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the
one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water. I warn
everyone who hears the prophetic words in this book: if anyone
adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this
book, and if anyone takes away from the words in this prophetic
book, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the
holy city described in this book. The one who gives this testimony
says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. [RV 22:10-21]
