"Go back, my
daughters!" said Naomi. "Why should you come with me?
Have I other sons in my womb who may become your husbands? Go
back, my daughters! Go, for I am too old to marry again. And even
if I could offer any hopes, or if tonight I had a husband or had
borne sons, would you then wait and deprive yourselves of husbands
until those sons grew up? No, my daughters! my lot is too bitter
for you, because the LORD has extended his hand against me."
Again they sobbed aloud and wept; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye, but Ruth stayed with her. [RUTH 1:11-14]
Though it was night, the king got up; he said to his servants:
"Let me tell you what the Arameans have done to us. Knowing
that we are in famine, they have left their camp to hide in the
field, hoping to take us alive and enter our city when we leave
it." One of his servants, however, suggested: "Since
those who are left in the city are no better off than all the
throng that has perished, let some of us take five of the
abandoned horses and send scouts to investigate." [2KGS 7:12-13]
While Ezra prayed and acknowledged their guilt, weeping and
prostrate before the house of God, a very large assembly of
Israelites gathered about him, men, women, and children; and the
people wept profusely. Then Shecaniah, the son of Jehiel, one of
the sons of Elam, made this appeal to Ezra: "We have indeed
betrayed our God by taking as wives foreign women of the peoples
of the land. Yet even now there remains a hope for Israel. Let us
therefore enter into a covenant before our God to dismiss all our
foreign wives and the children born of them, in keeping with what
you, my lord, advise, and those who fear the commandments of our
God. Let the law be observed! Rise, then, for this is your duty!
We will stand by you, so have courage and take action!" [EZRA
10:1-4]
But his mother began to weep. She said to Tobit: "Why have
you decided to send my child away? Is he not the staff to which we
cling, ever there with us in all that we do? I hope more money is
not your chief concern! Rather let it be a ransom for our son!
What the Lord has given us to live on is certainly enough for
us." Tobit reassured her: "Have no such thought. Our son
will leave in good health and come back to us in good health. Your
own eyes will see the day when he returns to you safe and sound.
So, no such thought; do not worry about them, my love. For a good
angel will go with him, his journey will be successful, and he
will return unharmed." [TOBIT 5:18-22]
If you still cherish the hope that they will not be taken, then
there is no need for you to be downcast. [Taken from JDTH 6:9]
"So while we wait for the salvation that comes from him,
let us call upon him to help us, and he will hear our cry if it is
his good pleasure. For there has not risen among us in recent
generations, nor does there exist today, any tribe, or clan, or
town, or city of ours that worships gods made by hands, as
happened in former days. It was for such conduct that our
forefathers were handed over to the sword and to pillage, and fell
with great destruction before our enemies. But since we
acknowledge no other god but the Lord, we hope that he will not
disdain us or any of our people." [Taken from JDTH 8:17-20]
"Your strength is not in numbers, nor does your power
depend upon stalwart men; but you are the God of the lowly, the
helper of the oppressed, the supporter of the weak, the protector
of the forsaken, the savior of those without hope. Please, please,
God of my forefather, God of the heritage of Israel, Lord of
heaven and earth, Creator of the waters, King of all you have
created, hear my prayer!" [Taken from JDTH 9:11-12]
All the people were greatly astonished. They bowed down and
worshiped God, saying with one accord, "Blessed are you, our
God, who today have brought to nought the enemies of your
people." Then Uzziah said to her: "Blessed are you,
daughter, by the Most High God, above all the women on earth; and
blessed be the Lord God, the creator of heaven and earth, who
guided your blow at the head of the chief of our enemies. Your
deed of hope will never be forgotten by those who tell of the
might of God. May God make this redound to your everlasting honor,
rewarding you with blessings, because you risked your life when
your people were being oppressed, and you averted our disaster,
walking uprightly before our God." And all the people
answered, "Amen! Amen!" [JDTH 13:17-20]
He so far enjoyed the good will which we have toward all peoples that he was proclaimed "father of the
king", before whom everyone was to bow down; he attained the rank second to the royal throne.
But, unequal to this dignity, he strove to deprive us of kingdom and of life; and by weaving intricate webs of deceit, he demanded the destruction of Mordecai, our savior and constant benefactor, and of Esther, our blameless royal consort, together with their whole race.
For by such measures he hoped to catch us defenseless and to transfer the rule of the Persians to the Macedonians. But we find that the Jews, who were doomed to extinction by this archcriminal, are not evildoers, but rather are governed by very just laws and are the children of the Most High, the living God of majesty, who has maintained the kingdom in a flourishing condition for us and for our forebears.
[Taken from ESTH E:11-16]
And so, consider this from generation to generation, that none
who hope in him shall fail in strength. [1MACC 2:61]
But at daybreak Judas appeared in the plain with three thousand
men, who lacked such armor and swords as they would have wished.
They saw the army of the Gentiles, strong and breastplated,
flanked with cavalry, and made up of expert soldiers. Judas said
to the men with him: "Do not be afraid of their numbers or
dread their attack. Remember how our fathers were saved in the Red
Sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army. So now let us cry to
Heaven in the hope that he will favor us, remember his covenant
with our fathers, and destroy this army before us today. All the
Gentiles shall know that there is One who redeems and delivers
Israel." [1MACC 4:6-11]
The man who a moment before had entered that treasury with a great retinue and his whole bodyguard was carried away helpless, having clearly experienced the sovereign power of God. While he lay speechless and deprived of all hope of aid, due to an act of God's power, the Jews praised the Lord who had marvelously glorified his holy Place; and the temple, charged so shortly before with fear and commotion, was filled with joy and gladness, now that the almighty Lord had manifested himself.
[2MACC 3:28-30]
At length he met a miserable end. Called to account before
Aretas, king of the Arabs, he fled from city to city, hunted by
all men, hated as a transgressor of the laws, abhorred as the
butcher of his country and his countrymen. After being driven into
Egypt, he crossed the sea to the Spartans, among whom he hoped to
find protection because of his relations with them. There he who
had exiled so many from their country perished in exile; and he
who had cast out so many to lie unburied went unmourned himself
with no funeral of any kind or any place in the tomb of his
ancestors. [2MACC 5:8-10]
At the point of death he said: "You accursed fiend, you
are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world
will raise us up to live again forever. It is for his laws that we
are dying." After him the third suffered their cruel sport.
He put out his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely held
out his hands, as he spoke these noble words: "It was from
Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain
them; from him I hope to receive them again." Even the king
and his attendants marveled at the young man's courage, because he
regarded his sufferings as nothing. After he had died, they
tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same way. When
he was near death, he said, "It is my choice to die at the
hands of men with the God-given hope of being restored to life by
him; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life." [2MACC
7:9-14]
Most admirable and worthy of everlasting remembrance was the
mother, who saw her seven sons perish in a single day, yet bore it
courageously because of her hope in the Lord. [2MACC 7:20]
We, indeed, are suffering because of our sins. Though our
living Lord treats us harshly for a little while to correct us
with chastisements, he will again be reconciled with his servants.
But you, wretch, vilest of all men! do not, in your insolence,
concern yourself with unfounded hopes, as you raise your hand
against the children of Heaven. You have not yet escaped the
judgment of the almighty and all-seeing God. My brothers, after
enduring brief pain, have drunk of never-failing life, under God's
covenant, but you, by the judgment of God, shall receive just
punishments for your arrogance. [2MACC 7:32-36]
But since God's punishment had justly come upon him, his
sufferings were not lessened, so he lost hope for himself and
wrote the following letter to the Jews in the form of a
supplication. [Taken from 2MACC 9:18]
In the year one hundred and forty-nine, Judas and his men
learned that Antiochus Eupator was invading Judea with a large
force, and that with him was Lysias, his guardian, who was in
charge of the government. They led a Greek army of one hundred and
ten thousand foot soldiers, fifty-three hundred horsemen,
twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariots armed with
scythes. Menelaus also joined them, and with great duplicity kept
urging Antiochus on, not for the welfare of his country, but in
the hope of being established in office. [2MACC 13:1-3]
Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of
life your hope? [JOB 4:6]
Thus the unfortunate have hope, and iniquity closes her mouth.
[JOB 5:16]
Can the papyrus grow up without mire? Can the reed grass
flourish without water? While it is yet green and uncut, it
withers quicker than any grass. So is the end of everyone who
forgets God, and so shall the hope of the godless man perish. [JOB
8:11-13]
For a tree there is hope, if it be cut down, that it will
sprout again and that its tender shoots will not cease. Even
though its root grow old in the earth, and its stump die in the
dust, Yet at the first whiff of water it may flourish again and
put forth branches like a young plant. [JOB 14:7-9]
As waters wear away the stones and floods wash away the soil of
the land, so you destroy the hope of man. [JOB 14:19]
Where then is my hope, and my prosperity, who shall see? [JOB
17:15]
He has stripped me of my glory, and taken the diadem from my
brow. He breaks me down on every side, and I am gone; my hope he
has uprooted like a tree. His wrath he has kindled against me; he
counts me among his enemies. [JOB 19:9-11]
Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him? Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.
[JOB 41:1-2]
The needy will never be forgotten, nor will the hope of the
afflicted ever fade. [PS 9:19]
Will these evildoers never learn? They devour my people as they
devour bread; they do not call upon the LORD. They have good
reason, then, to fear; God is with the company of the just. They
would crush the hopes of the poor, but the poor have the LORD as
their refuge. [PS 14:4-6]
Love the LORD, all you faithful. The LORD protects the loyal,
but repays the arrogant in full. Be strong and take heart, all you
who hope in the LORD. [PS 31:24-25]
A king is not saved by a mighty army, nor a warrior delivered
by great strength. Useless is the horse for safety; its great
strength, no sure escape. But the LORD'S eyes are upon the
reverent, upon those who hope for his gracious help, Delivering
them from death, keeping them alive in times of famine. [PS 33:16-19]
Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and shield. For in
God our hearts rejoice; in your holy name we trust. May your
kindness, LORD, be upon us; we have put our hope in you. [PS 33:20-22]
LORD, let me know my end, the number of my days, that I may
learn how frail I am. You have given my days a very short span; my
life is as nothing before you. All mortals are but a breath. Mere
phantoms, we go our way; mere vapor, our restless pursuits; we
heap up stores without knowing for whom. And now, Lord, what
future do I have? You are my only hope. From all my sins deliver
me; let me not be the taunt of fools. [Taken from PS 39:5-9]
My soul, be at rest in God alone, from whom comes my hope. God alone is my rock and my salvation, my secure height; I shall not fall.
[PS 62:6-7]
Do not trust in extortion; in plunder put no empty hope. Though
wealth increase, do not set your heart upon it. [PS 62:11]
You answer us with awesome deeds of justice, O God our savior,
The hope of all the ends of the earth and of far distant islands.
You are robed in power, you set up the mountains by your might.
You still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the
tumult of the peoples. Distant peoples stand in awe of your
marvels; east and west you make resound with joy. [PS 65:6-9]
You are my hope, Lord; my trust, GOD, from my youth. On you I depend since birth; from my mother's womb you are my strength; my hope in you never wavers.
[PS 71:5-6]
I will always hope in you and add to all your praise. My mouth
shall proclaim your just deeds, day after day your acts of
deliverance, though I cannot number them all. I will speak of the
mighty works of the Lord; O GOD, I will tell of your singular
justice. [PS 71:14-16]
Do not take the word of truth from my mouth, for in your edicts
is my hope. [PS 119:43]
Remember your word to your servant by which you give me hope.
This is my comfort in affliction, your promise that gives me life.
Though the arrogant utterly scorn me, I do not turn from your
teaching. When I recite your edicts of old I am comforted, LORD. [PS
119:49-52]
Those who fear you rejoice to see me, because I hope in your
word. [PS 119:74]
My soul longs for your salvation; I put my hope in your word.
My eyes long to see your promise. When will you comfort me?
[PS 119:81-82]
I am yours; save me, for I cherish your precepts. The wicked hope to destroy me, but I pay heed to your decrees.
[PS 119:94-95]
I hate every hypocrite; your teaching I love. You are my refuge
and shield; in your word I hope. Depart from me, you wicked, that
I may observe the commands of my God. Sustain me by your promise
that I may live; do not disappoint me in my hope. Strengthen me
that I may be safe, ever to contemplate your laws. You reject all
who stray from your laws, for vain is their deceit. Like dross you
regard all the wicked on earth; therefore I love your decrees. My
flesh shudders with dread of you; I hold your edicts in awe. [PS
119:113-120]
I call with all my heart, O LORD; answer me that I may observe
your laws. I call to you to save me that I may keep your decrees.
I rise before dawn and cry out; I put my hope in your words. [PS
119:145-147]
Israel, hope in the LORD, now and forever. [PS 131:3]
Rescue me, LORD, from my foes, for in you I hope. [PS 143:9]
The LORD supports all who are falling and raises up all who are
bowed down. The eyes of all look hopefully to you; you give them
their food in due season. You open wide your hand and satisfy the
desire of every living thing. [PS 145:14-16]
Happy those whose help is Jacob's God, whose hope is in the
LORD, their God, The maker of heaven and earth, the seas and all
that is in them, Who keeps faith forever, secures justice for the
oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free;
the LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who
are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. The LORD protects
the stranger, sustains the orphan and the widow, but thwarts the
way of the wicked. The LORD shall reign forever, your God, Zion,
through all generations! Hallelujah! [PS 146:5-10]
The hope of the just brings them joy, but the expectation of
the wicked comes to nought. [PROV 10:28]
When a wicked man dies his hope perishes, and what is expected
from strength comes to nought. [PROV 11:7]
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a wish fulfilled is a
tree of life. [PROV 13:12]
Chastise your son, for in this there is hope; but do not desire
his death. [PROV 19:18]
Let not your heart emulate sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the LORD always;
For you will surely have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
[PROV 23:17-18]
If you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste;
Such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul. If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
[PROV 24:13-14]
You see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a
fool than for him. [PROV 26:12]
Do you see a man hasty in his words? More can be hoped for from
a fool! [PROV 29:20]
Indeed, for any among the living there is hope [Taken from ECCL 9:4]
But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no
torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish,
to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and
their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in
peace. For if before men, indeed, they be punished, yet is their
hope full of immortality; Chastised a little, they shall be
greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of
himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as
sacrificial offerings he took them to himself. In the time of
their visitation they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks
through stubble; They shall judge nations and rule over peoples,
and the LORD shall be their King forever. Those who trust in him
shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in
love: Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care
is with the elect. But the wicked shall receive a punishment to
match their thoughts, since they neglected justice and forsook the
LORD. For he who despises wisdom and instruction is doomed. Vain
is their hope, fruitless are their labors, and worthless are their
works. [WISDOM 3:1-11]
But the children of adulterers will remain without issue, and
the progeny of an unlawful bed will disappear. For should they
attain long life, they will be held in no esteem, and dishonored
will their old age be at last; While should they die abruptly,
they have no hope nor comfort in the day of scrutiny; for dire is
the end of the wicked generation. [WISDOM 3:16-19]
Yes, the hope of the wicked is like thistledown borne on the
wind, and like fine, tempest-driven foam; Like smoke scattered by
the wind, and like the passing memory of the nomad camping for a
single day. [WISDOM 5:14]
For you show your might when the perfection of your power is
disbelieved; and in those who know you, you rebuke temerity. But
though you are master of might, you judge with clemency, and with
much lenience you govern us; for power, whenever you will, attends
you. And you taught your people, by these deeds, that those who
are just must be kind; And you gave your sons good ground for hope
that you would permit repentance for their sins. [WISDOM 12:17-19]
But doomed are they, and in dead things are their hopes, who
termed gods things made by human hands: Gold and silver, the
product of art, and likenesses of beasts, or useless stone, the
work of an ancient hand. [WISDOM 13:10]
But you will that the products of your Wisdom be not idle;
therefore men trust their lives even to frailest wood, and have
been safe crossing the surge on a raft. For of old, when the proud
giants were being destroyed, the hope of the universe, who took
refuge on a raft, left to the world a future for his race, under
the guidance of your hand. For blest is the wood through which
justice comes about [Taken from WISDOM 14:5-7]
Lovers of evil things, and worthy of such hopes are they who
make them and long for them and worship them. [WISDOM 15:6]
Ashes his heart is! more worthless than earth is his hope, and
more ignoble than clay his life; Because he knew not the one who
fashioned him, and breathed into him a quickening soul, and
infused a vital spirit. Instead, he esteemed our life a plaything,
and our span of life a holiday for gain; "For one must,"
says he, "make profit every way, be it even out of
evil." [Taken from WISDOM 15:10-12]
For the hope of the ingrate melts like a wintry frost and runs
off like useless water. [WISDOM 16:29]
Trust God and he will help you; make straight your ways and
hope in him. You who fear the LORD, wait for his mercy, turn not
away lest you fall. You who fear the LORD, trust him, and your
reward will not be lost. You who fear the LORD, hope for good
things, for lasting joy and mercy. Study the generations long past
and understand; has anyone hoped in the LORD and been
disappointed? Has anyone persevered in his fear and been forsaken?
has anyone called upon him and been rebuffed? [SIRACH 2:6-10]
Woe to craven hearts and drooping hands, to the sinner who
treads a double path! Woe to the faint of heart who trust not, who
therefore will have no shelter! Woe to you who have lost hope!
what will you do at the visitation of the LORD? [SIRACH 2:12-14]
God's blessing is the lot of the just man, and in due time his
hopes bear fruit. [SIRACH 11:22]
Happy the man whose mouth brings him no grief, who is not stung by remorse for sin.
Happy the man whose conscience does not reproach him, who has not lost hope.
[SIRACH 14:1-2]
Desire not a brood of worthless children, nor rejoice in wicked
offspring. Many though they be, exult not in them if they have not
the fear of the LORD. Count not on their length of life, have no
hope in their future. For one can be better than a thousand;
rather die childless than have godless children! [SIRACH 16:1-3]
A criminal does not escape with his plunder; a just man's hope God does not leave unfulfilled.
Whoever does good has his reward, which each receives according to his deeds.
[SIRACH 16:13-14]
But to the penitent he provides a way back, he encourages those
who are losing hope! Return to the LORD and give up sin, pray to
him and make your offenses few. Turn again to the Most High and
away from sin, hate intensely what he loathes [Taken from SIRACH
17:19-21]
Empty and false are the hopes of the senseless, and fools are
borne aloft by dreams. Like a man who catches at shadows or chases
the wind, is the one who believes in dreams. What is seen in
dreams is to reality what the reflection of a face is to the face
itself. Can the unclean produce the clean? can the liar ever speak
the truth? Divination, omens and dreams all are unreal; what you
already expect, the mind depicts. Unless it be a vision specially
sent by the Most High, fix not your heart on it; For dreams have
led many astray, and those who believed in them have perished.
[SIRACH 34:1-7]
Lively is the courage of those who fear the LORD, for they put
their hope in their savior; He who fears the LORD is never alarmed, never afraid; for the
LORD is his hope. [SIRACH 34:13-14]
Take pity on your holy city, Jerusalem, your dwelling place.
Fill Zion with your majesty, your temple with your glory. Give
evidence of your deeds of old; fulfill the prophecies spoken in
your name, Reward those who have hoped in you, and let your
prophets be proved true. Hear the prayer of your servants, for you
are ever gracious to your people; Thus it will be known to the
very ends of the earth that you are the eternal God. [SIRACH 36:12-17]
My son, shed tears for one who is dead with wailing and bitter
lament; As is only proper, prepare the body, absent not yourself
from his burial: Weeping bitterly, mourning fully, pay your
tribute of sorrow, as he deserves, One or two days, to prevent
gossip; then compose yourself after your grief, For grief can
bring on an extremity and heartache destroy one's health. Turn not
your thoughts to him again; cease to recall him; think rather of
the end. Recall him not, for there is no hope of his return; it
will not help him, but will do you harm. Remember that his fate
will also be yours; for him it was yesterday, for you today. With
the departed dead, let memory fade; rally your courage, once the
soul has left. [SIRACH 38:16-23]
O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace
amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful,
who still can enjoy life's pleasures. O death! how welcome your
sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always
rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope. Fear not death's
decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those
after. [SIRACH 41:1-3]
Then, too, the Twelve Prophets - may their bones return to life
from their resting place! - Gave new strength to Jacob and saved
him by their faith and hope. [SIRACH 49:10]
Then the LORD said: Just as my servant Isaiah has gone naked
and barefoot for three years as a sign and portent against Egypt
and Ethiopia, so shall the king of Assyria lead away captives from
Egypt, and exiles from Ethiopia, young and old, naked and
barefoot, with buttocks uncovered (the shame of Egypt). They shall
be dismayed and ashamed because of Ethiopia, their hope, and
because of Egypt, their boast. The inhabitants of this coastland
shall say on that day, "Look at our hope! We have fled here
for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria; where can we
flee now?" [ISA 20:3-6]
Do you not know or have you not heard? The LORD is the eternal
God, creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint nor grow
weary, and his knowledge is beyond scrutiny. He gives strength to
the fainting; for the weak he makes vigor abound. Though young men
faint and grow weary, and youths stagger and fall, They that hope
in the LORD will renew their strength, they will soar as with
eagles' wings; They will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow
faint. [ISA 40:28-31]
Thus says the Lord GOD: See, I will lift up my hand to the
nations, and raise my signal to the peoples; They shall bring your
sons in their arms, and your daughters shall be carried on their
shoulders. Kings shall be your foster fathers, their princesses
your nurses; Bowing to the ground, they shall worship you and lick
the dust at your feet. Then you shall know that I am the LORD, and
those who hope in me shall never be disappointed. [ISA 49:22-23]
Be attentive to me, my people; my folk, give ear to me. For law
shall go forth from my presence, and my judgment, as the light of
the peoples. I will make my justice come speedily; my salvation
shall go forth (and my arm shall judge the nations); In me shall
the coastlands hope, and my arm they shall await. [Taken from ISA
51:4-5]
Thus your name would be made known to your enemies and the
nations would tremble before you, While you wrought awesome deeds
we could not hope for, such as they had not heard of from of old.
No ear has ever heard, no eye ever seen, any God but you doing
such deeds for those who wait for him. Would that you might meet
us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our ways! [Taken
from ISA 64:1-4]
O Hope of Israel, O LORD, our savior in time of need! Why
should you be a stranger in this land, like a traveler who has
stopped but for a night? [JER 14:8]
Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the
LORD. He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches
out its roots to the stream: It fears not the heat when it comes,
its leaves stay green; In the year of drought it shows no
distress, but still bears fruit. [JER 17:7-8]
O hope of Israel, O LORD! all who forsake you shall be in
disgrace; The rebels in the land shall be put to shame; they have
forsaken the source of living waters (the LORD). [JER 17:13]
For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the
LORD, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a
future full of hope. [JER 29:11]
Thus says the LORD: Cease your cries of mourning, wipe the
tears from your eyes. The sorrow you have shown shall have its
reward, says the LORD, they shall return from the enemy's land.
There is hope for your future, says the LORD; your sons shall
return to their own borders. [JER 31:16-17]
Whoever came upon them devoured them, and their enemies said,
"We incur no guilt, Because they sinned against the LORD, the
hope of their fathers, their abode of justice." [Taken from JER 50:7]
All your enemies open their mouths against you; They hiss and
gnash their teeth. They say, "We have devoured her. This at
last is the day we hoped for; we have lived to see it!" [LAM
2:16]
I have become a laughingstock for all nations, their taunt all
the day long; He has sated me with bitter food, made me drink my
fill of wormwood. He has broken my teeth with gravel, pressed my
face in the dust; My soul is deprived of peace, I have forgotten
what happiness is; I tell myself my future is lost, all that I
hoped for from the LORD. The thought of my homeless poverty is
wormwood and gall; Remembering it over and over leaves my soul
downcast within me. But I will call this to mind, as my reason to
have hope: The favors of the LORD are not exhausted, his mercies
are not spent; They are renewed each morning, so great is his
faithfulness. My portion is the LORD, says my soul; therefore will
I hope in him. Good is the LORD to one who waits for him, to the
soul that seeks him; It is good to hope in silence for the saving
help of the LORD. It is good for a man to bear the yoke from his
youth. Let him sit alone and in silence, when it is laid upon him.
Let him put his mouth to the dust; there may yet be hope. Let him
offer his cheek to be struck, let him be filled with disgrace. For
the Lord's rejection does not last forever; Though he punishes, he
takes pity, in the abundance of his mercies; He has no joy in
afflicting or grieving the sons of men. [LAM 3:14-33]
Then she saw that in vain she had waited, her hope was
destroyed. She took another of her whelps, him she made a young
lion. [EZEK 19:5]
Then he said to me: Son of man, these bones are the whole house
of Israel. They have been saying, "Our bones are dried up,
our hope is lost, and we are cut off." Therefore, prophesy
and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD: O my people, I will open
your graves and have you rise from them, and bring you back to the
land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I
open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people! I will
put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon
your land; thus you shall know that I am the LORD. I have
promised, and I will do it, says the LORD. [EZEK 37:11-14]
The whole assembly cried aloud, blessing God who saves those
that hope in him. [DAN 13:60]
So I will allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak
to her heart. From there I will give her the vineyards she had,
and the valley of Achor as a door of hope. She shall respond there
as in the days of her youth, when she came up from the land of
Egypt. On that day, says the LORD, She shall call me "My
husband," and never again "My baal." Then will I
remove from her mouth the names of the Baals, so that they shall
no longer be invoked. I will make a covenant for them on that day,
with the beasts of the field, With the birds of the air, and with
the things that crawl on the ground. Bow and sword and war I will
destroy from the land, and I will let them take their rest in
security. I will espouse you to me forever: I will espouse you in
right and in justice, in love and in mercy; I will espouse you in
fidelity, and you shall know the LORD. [HOSEA 2:16-22]
You shall return by the help of your God, if you remain loyal
and do right and always hope in your God. [HOSEA 12:7]
How can the inhabitants of Maroth hope for good? For evil has
come down from the LORD to the gate of Jerusalem. [MICAH 1:12]
But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him to put
him to death. When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that
place. Many (people) followed him, and he cured them all, but he
warned them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what had
been spoken through Isaiah the prophet: "Behold, my servant
whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom I delight; I shall place my
spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He
will not contend or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the
streets. A bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he
will not quench, until he brings justice to victory. And in his
name the Gentiles will hope." [MT 12:14-21]
Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform some sign. He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer.
[LK 23:8-9]
And it happened that while they were conversing and debating,
Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were
prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, "What are you
discussing as you walk along?" They stopped, looking
downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply,
"Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of
the things that have taken place there in these days?" And he
replied to them, "What sort of things?" They said to
him, "The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was
a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a
sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he
would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now
the third day since this took place. Some women from our group,
however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the
morning and did not find his body; they came back and reported
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he
was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found
things just as the women had described, but him they did not
see." And he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are! How
slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not
necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter
into his glory?" Then beginning with Moses and all the
prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the
scriptures. [LK 24:15-27]
[Jesus said,] "Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father: the one who will accuse you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope. For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me.
But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"
[Taken from JN 5:45-47]
You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean
was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and
signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you
yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the set plan and
foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify
him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of
death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it. For
David says of him: 'I saw the Lord ever before me, with him at my
right hand I shall not be disturbed. Therefore my heart has been
glad and my tongue has exulted; my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will
you suffer your holy one to see corruption. You have made known to
me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
[ACTS 2:22-28]
Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and some Pharisees, so
he called out before the Sanhedrin, "My brothers, I am a
Pharisee, the son of Pharisees; (I) am on trial for hope in the
resurrection of the dead." [ACTS 23:6]
But this I do admit to you, that according to the Way, which
they call a sect, I worship the God of our ancestors and I believe
everything that is in accordance with the law and written in the
prophets. I have the same hope in God as they themselves have that
there will be a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous.
Because of this, I always strive to keep my conscience clear
before God and man. [Taken from ACTS 24:14-16]
Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was
Jewish. He had Paul summoned and listened to him speak about faith
in Christ Jesus. But as he spoke about righteousness and
self-restraint and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened
and said, "You may go for now; when I find an opportunity I
shall summon you again." At the same time he hoped that a
bribe would be offered him by Paul, and so he sent for him very
often and conversed with him. [ACTS 24:24-26]
My manner of living from my youth, a life spent from the
beginning among my people and in Jerusalem, all (the) Jews know.
They have known about me from the start, if they are willing to
testify, that I have lived my life as a Pharisee, the strictest
party of our religion. But now I am standing trial because of my
hope in the promise made by God to our ancestors. Our twelve
tribes hope to attain to that promise as they fervently worship
God day and night; and on account of this hope I am accused by
Jews, O king. Why is it thought unbelievable among you that God
raises the dead? [Taken from ACTS 26:4-8]
Neither the sun nor the stars were visible for many days, and
no small storm raged. Finally, all hope of our surviving was taken
away. When many would no longer eat, Paul stood among them and
said, "Men, you should have taken my advice and not have set
sail from Crete and you would have avoided this disastrous loss. I
urge you now to keep up your courage; not one of you will be lost,
only the ship. For last night an angel of the God to whom (I)
belong and whom I serve stood by me and said, 'Do not be afraid,
Paul. You are destined to stand before Caesar; and behold, for
your sake, God has granted safety to all who are sailing with
you.' Therefore, keep up your courage, men; I trust in God that it
will turn out as I have been told. We are destined to run aground
on some island." [Taken from ACTS 27:20-26]
Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews.
When they had gathered he said to them, "My brothers,
although I had done nothing against our people or our ancestral
customs, I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from
Jerusalem. After trying my case the Romans wanted to release me,
because they found nothing against me deserving the death penalty.
But when the Jews objected, I was obliged to appeal to Caesar,
even though I had no accusation to make against my own nation.
This is the reason, then, I have requested to see you and to speak
with you, for it is on account of the hope of Israel that I wear
these chains." [ACTS 28:17-20]
It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham
and his descendants that he would inherit the world, but through
the righteousness that comes from faith. For if those who adhere
to the law are the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.
For the law produces wrath; but where there is no law, neither is
there violation. For this reason, it depends on faith, so that it
may be a gift, and the promise may be guaranteed to all his
descendants, not to those who only adhere to the law but to those
who follow the faith of Abraham, who is the father of all of us,
as it is written, "I have made you father of many
nations." He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he
believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into being what
does not exist. He believed, hoping against hope, that he would
become "the father of many nations," according to what
was said, "Thus shall your descendants be." He did not
weaken in faith when he considered his own body as (already) dead
(for he was almost a hundred years old) and the dead womb of
Sarah. He did not doubt God's promise in unbelief; rather, he was
empowered by faith and gave glory to God and was fully convinced
that what he had promised he was also able to do. That is why
"it was credited to him as righteousness." But it was
not for him alone that it was written that "it was credited
to him"; it was also for us, to whom it will be credited, who
believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who
was handed over for our transgressions and was raised for our
justification. [ROM 4:13-25]
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have
gained access (by faith) to this grace in which we stand, and we
boast in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we even
boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces
endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character,
hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has
been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has
been given to us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet
died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with
difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a
good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his
love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for
us. How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood,
will we be saved through him from the wrath. Indeed, if, while we
were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his
Son, how much more, once reconciled, will we be saved by his life.
[ROM 5:1-10]
I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as
nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For
creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the
children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of
its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope
that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption
and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know
that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and
not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the
Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption,
the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope
that sees for itself is not hope. For who hopes for what one sees?
But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance. In
the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for
we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself
intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches
hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it
intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will. [ROM 8:18-27]
Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer.
[ROM 12:12]
We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak
and not to please ourselves; let each of us please our neighbor
for the good, for building up. For Christ did not please himself;
but, as it is written, "The insults of those who insult you
fall upon me." For whatever was written previously was
written for our instruction, that by endurance and by the
encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of
endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one
another, in keeping with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you
may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ. [ROM 15:1-6]
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in
believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. [ROM 15:13]
I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain and to be sent on
my way there by you, after I have enjoyed being with you for a
time. [ROM 15:24]
It is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle
an ox while it is treading out the grain." Is God concerned
about oxen, or is he not really speaking for our sake? It was
written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope, and
the thresher in hope of receiving a share. [1COR 9:9-10]
If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I
am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift
of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I
have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am
nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body
over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not
pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its
own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over
injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the
truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
endures all things. Love never fails. If there are prophecies,
they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if
knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. For we know partially
and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, the partial
will pass away. When I was a child, I used to talk as a child,
think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put
aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly, as in a
mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I
shall know fully, as I am fully known. So faith, hope, love
remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. [1COR 13:1-13]
For if the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised,
and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are
still in your sins. Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ
have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we
are the most pitiable people of all. [1COR 15:16-19]
For I do not wish to see you now just in passing, but I hope to
spend some time with you, if the Lord permits. [1COR 16:7]
If we are afflicted, it is for your encouragement and
salvation; if we are encouraged, it is for your encouragement,
which enables you to endure the same sufferings that we suffer.
Our hope for you is firm, for we know that as you share in the
sufferings, you also share in the encouragement. We do not want
you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction that came to us in
the province of Asia; we were utterly weighed down beyond our
strength, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, we had
accepted within ourselves the sentence of death, that we might
trust not in ourselves but in God who raises the dead. He rescued
us from such great danger of death, and he will continue to rescue
us; in him we have put our hope (that) he will also rescue us
again, as you help us with prayer, so that thanks may be given by
many on our behalf for the gift granted us through the prayers of
many. [2COR 1:6-11]
For we write you nothing but what you can read and understand, and I hope that you will understand completely, as you have come to understand us partially, that we are your boast as you also are ours, on the day of (our) Lord Jesus.
[2COR 1:13-14]
For if the ministry of condemnation was glorious, the ministry
of righteousness will abound much more in glory. Indeed, what was
endowed with glory has come to have no glory in this respect
because of the glory that surpasses it. For if what was going to
fade was glorious, how much more will what endures be glorious.
Therefore, since we have such hope, we act very boldly and not
like Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the Israelites
could not look intently at the cessation of what was fading.
Rather, their thoughts were rendered dull, for to this present day
the same veil remains unlifted when they read the old covenant,
because through Christ it is taken away. [2COR 3:9-14]
Therefore, since we know the fear of the Lord, we try to
persuade others; but we are clearly apparent to God, and I hope we
are also apparent to your consciousness. [2COR 5:11]
We are not boasting beyond measure, in other people's labors;
yet our hope is that, as your faith increases, our influence among
you may be greatly enlarged, within our proper limits, so that we
may preach the gospel even beyond you, not boasting of work
already done in another's sphere. "Whoever boasts, should
boast in the Lord." For it is not the one who recommends
himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord recommends. [2COR
10:15-18]
Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in faith. Test
yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you? -
unless, of course, you fail the test. I hope you will discover
that we have not failed. But we pray to God that you may not do
evil, not that we may appear to have passed the test but that you
may do what is right, even though we may seem to have failed. [2COR
13:5-7]
It is I, Paul, who am telling you that if you have yourselves
circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. Once again I
declare to every man who has himself circumcised that he is bound
to observe the entire law. You are separated from Christ, you who
are trying to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For
through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness.
For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision
counts for anything, but only faith working through love. [GAL 5:2-6]
May the eyes of (your) hearts be enlightened, that you may know
what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of
glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the
surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord
with the exercise of his great might, which he worked in Christ,
raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the
heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and
dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but
also in the one to come. And he put all things beneath his feet
and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his
body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way. [EPH
1:18-23]
Therefore, remember that at one time you, Gentiles in the
flesh, called the uncircumcision by those called the circumcision,
which is done in the flesh by human hands, were at that time
without Christ, alienated from the community of Israel and
strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without
God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far
off have become near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace,
he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity,
through his flesh, abolishing the law with its commandments and
legal claims, that he might create in himself one new person in
place of the two, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile
both with God, in one body, through the cross, putting that enmity
to death by it. [EPH 2:11-16]
I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner
worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and
gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love,
striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of
peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one
hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and
Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. [EPH 4:1-6]
My eager expectation and hope is that I shall not be put to
shame in any way, but that with all boldness, now as always,
Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.
[PHIL 1:20]
I hope, in the Lord Jesus, to send Timothy to you soon, so that
I too may be heartened by hearing news of you. For I have no one
comparable to him for genuine interest in whatever concerns you.
For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
But you know his worth, how as a child with a father he served
along with me in the cause of the gospel. He it is, then, whom I
hope to send as soon as I see how things go with me, but I am
confident in the Lord that I myself will also come soon. [PHIL 2:19-24]
It is not that I have already taken hold of it or have already
attained perfect maturity, but I continue my pursuit in hope that
I may possess it, since I have indeed been taken possession of by
Christ (Jesus). Brothers, I for my part do not consider myself to
have taken possession. Just one thing: forgetting what lies behind
but straining forward to what lies ahead, I continue my pursuit
toward the goal, the prize of God's upward calling, in Christ
Jesus. Let us, then, who are "perfectly mature" adopt
this attitude. And if you have a different attitude, this too God
will reveal to you. [PHIL 3:12-15]
We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, when we pray for you, for we have heard of your faith in
Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the holy ones
because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. Of this you have
already heard through the word of truth, the gospel, that has come
to you. Just as in the whole world it is bearing fruit and
growing, so also among you, from the day you heard it and came to
know the grace of God in truth, as you learned it from Epaphras
our beloved fellow slave, who is a trustworthy minister of Christ
on your behalf and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. [COL
1:3-8]
And you who once were alienated and hostile in mind because of
evil deeds he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through his
death, to present you holy, without blemish, and irreproachable
before him, provided that you persevere in the faith, firmly
grounded, stable, and not shifting from the hope of the gospel
that you heard, which has been preached to every creature under
heaven, of which I, Paul, am a minister. [COL 1:21-23]
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I
am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on
behalf of his body, which is the church, of which I am a minister
in accordance with God's stewardship given to me to bring to
completion for you the word of God, the mystery hidden from ages
and from generations past. But now it has been manifested to his
holy ones, to whom God chose to make known the riches of the glory
of this mystery among the Gentiles; it is Christ in you, the hope
for glory. It is he whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and
teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone
perfect in Christ. For this I labor and struggle, in accord with
the exercise of his power working within me. [COL 1:24-29]
We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in
our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and
labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ,
before our God and Father, knowing, brothers loved by God, how you
were chosen. [1THES 1:2-4]
Brothers, when we were bereft of you for a short time, in
person, not in heart, we were all the more eager in our great
desire to see you in person. We decided to go to you - I, Paul,
not only once but more than once - yet Satan thwarted us. For what
is our hope or joy or crown to boast of in the presence of our
Lord Jesus at his coming if not you yourselves? For you are our
glory and joy. [1THES 2:17-20]
We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, about those who
have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who
have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too
will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen
asleep. Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord, that we
who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will
surely not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord
himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel
and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the
dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are
left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet
the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Therefore, console one another with these words. [1THES 4:13-18]
Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay
alert and sober. Those who sleep go to sleep at night, and those
who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let
us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and the
helmet that is hope for salvation. For God did not destine us for
wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who
died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live
together with him. Therefore, encourage one another and build one
another up, as indeed you do. [1THES 5:6-11]
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.
[2THES 2:16-17]
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our savior
and of Christ Jesus our hope [Taken from 1TM 1:1]
I am writing you about these matters, although I hope to visit you soon. But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.
[1TM 3:14-15]
For this we toil and struggle, because we have set our hope on
the living God, who is the savior of all, especially of those who
believe. [1TM 4:10]
The real widow, who is all alone, has set her hope on God and
continues in supplications and prayers night and day. [1TM 5:5]
Paul, a slave of God and apostle of Jesus Christ for the sake
of the faith of God's chosen ones and the recognition of religious
truth, in the hope of eternal life that God, who does not lie,
promised before time began, who indeed at the proper time revealed
his word in the proclamation with which I was entrusted by the
command of God our savior, to Titus, my true child in our common
faith: grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our
savior. [TI 1:1-4]
For the grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us
to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live
temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the
blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of the great God and of
our savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us
from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his
own, eager to do what is good. Say these things. Exhort and
correct with all authority. Let no one look down on you. [TI 2:11-15]
Remind them to be under the control of magistrates and
authorities, to be obedient, to be open to every good enterprise.
They are to slander no one, to be peaceable, considerate,
exercising all graciousness toward everyone. For we ourselves were
once foolish, disobedient, deluded, slaves to various desires and
pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful ourselves and hating
one another. But when the kindness and generous love of God our
savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done
but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth
and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us
through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by
his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. [TI 3:1-7]
Therefore, holy "brothers," sharing in a heavenly
calling, reflect on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our
confession, who was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as
Moses was "faithful in (all) his house." But he is
worthy of more "glory" than Moses, as the founder of a
house has more "honor" than the house itself. Every
house is founded by someone, but the founder of all is God. Moses
was "faithful in all his house" as a "servant"
to testify to what would be spoken, but Christ was faithful as a
son placed over his house. We are his house, if (only) we hold
fast to our confidence and pride in our hope. [HEB 3:1-6]
We earnestly desire each of you to demonstrate the same eagerness for the fulfillment of hope until the end, so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who, through faith and patience, are inheriting the
promises. [HEB 6:11-12]
Human beings swear by someone greater than themselves; for them
an oath serves as a guarantee and puts an end to all argument. So
when God wanted to give the heirs of his promise an even clearer
demonstration of the immutability of his purpose, he intervened
with an oath, so that by two immutable things, in which it was
impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge might be
strongly encouraged to hold fast to the hope that lies before us.
This we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm, which
reaches into the interior behind the veil, where Jesus has entered
on our behalf as forerunner, becoming high priest forever
according to the order of Melchizedek. [HEB 6:16-20]
On the one hand, a former commandment is annulled because of its weakness and uselessness, for the law brought nothing to perfection; on the other hand, a better hope
is introduced, through which we draw near to God. [HEB 7:18-19]
Therefore, brothers, since through the blood of Jesus we have
confidence of entrance into the sanctuary by the new and living
way he opened for us through the veil, that is, his flesh, and
since we have "a great priest over the house of God,"
let us approach with a sincere heart and in absolute trust, with
our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies
washed in pure water. Let us hold unwaveringly to our confession
that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is trustworthy. We
must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works. We
should not stay away from our assembly, as is the custom of some,
but encourage one another, and this all the more as you see the
day drawing near. If we sin deliberately after receiving knowledge
of the truth, there no longer remains sacrifice for sins but a
fearful prospect of judgment and a flaming fire that is going to
consume the adversaries. Anyone who rejects the law of Moses is
put to death without pity on the testimony of two or three
witnesses. Do you not think that a much worse punishment is due
the one who has contempt for the Son of God, considers unclean the
covenant-blood by which he was consecrated, and insults the spirit
of grace? We know the one who said: "Vengeance is mine; I
will repay," and again: "The Lord will judge his
people." It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the
living God. [HEB 10:19-31]
Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of
things not seen. [HEB 11:1]
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in
his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that
is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you
who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a
salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time. [1PT 1:3-5]
Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly, and
set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you at the
revelation of Jesus Christ. Like obedient children, do not act in
compliance with the desires of your former ignorance but, as he
who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your
conduct, for it is written, "Be holy because I (am)
holy." Now if you invoke as Father him who judges impartially
according to each one's works, conduct yourselves with reverence
during the time of your sojourning, realizing that you were
ransomed from your futile conduct, handed on by your ancestors,
not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the
precious blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished lamb. He was
known before the foundation of the world but revealed in the final
time for you, who through him believe in God who raised him from
the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in
God. [1PT 1:13-21]
Likewise, you wives should be subordinate to your husbands so
that, even if some disobey the word, they may be won over without
a word by their wives' conduct when they observe your reverent and
chaste behavior. Your adornment should not be an external one:
braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine
clothes, but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed
in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which
is precious in the sight of God. For this is also how the holy
women who hoped in God once used to adorn themselves and were
subordinate to their husbands; thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling
him "lord." You are her children when you do what is
good and fear no intimidation. Likewise, you husbands should live
with your wives in understanding, showing honor to the weaker
female sex, since we are joint heirs of the gift of life, so that
your prayers may not be hindered. [1PT 3:1-7]
Now who is going to harm you if you are enthusiastic for what
is good? But even if you should suffer because of righteousness,
blessed are you. Do not be afraid or terrified with fear of them,
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to
give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your
hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your
conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame
your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. For it
is better to suffer for doing good, if that be the will of God,
than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once, the
righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you
to God [Taken from 1PT 3:13-18]
See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be
called the children of God. Yet so we are. The reason the world
does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are
God's children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We
do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we
shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope based on him
makes himself pure, as he is pure. [1JN 3:1-3]
Look to yourselves that you do not lose what we worked for but
may receive a full recompense. Anyone who is so
"progressive" as not to remain in the teaching of the
Christ does not have God; whoever remains in the teaching has the
Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this
doctrine, do not receive him in your house or even greet him; for
whoever greets him shares in his evil works. Although I have much
to write to you, I do not intend to use paper and ink. Instead, I
hope to visit you and to speak face to face so that our joy may be
complete. [2JN 1:8-12]
Beloved, I hope you are prospering in every respect and are in
good health, just as your soul is prospering. I rejoiced greatly
when some of the brothers came and testified to how truly you walk
in the truth. Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my
children are walking in the truth. [3JN 1:2-4]
I have much to write to you, but I do not wish to write with pen and ink.
Instead, I hope to see you soon, when we can talk face to face. [3JN
1:13-14]
