"But,"
objected Moses, "suppose they will not believe me, nor listen
to my plea? For they may say, 'The LORD did not appear to
you.'" The LORD therefore asked him, "What is that in
your hand?" "A staff," he answered. The LORD then
said, "Throw it on the ground." When he threw it on the
ground it was changed into a serpent, and Moses shied away from
it. "Now, put out your hand," the LORD said to him,
"and take hold of its tail." So he put out his hand and
laid hold of it, and it became a staff in his hand. "This
will take place so that they may believe," he continued,
"that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham,
the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, did appear to you. If they will not believe you, nor heed the message of the
first sign, they should believe the message of the second. And if
they will not believe even these two signs, nor heed your plea,
take some water from the river and pour it on the dry land. The
water you take from the river will become blood on the dry land" [EX 4:1-5,8-9]
The people believed, and when they heard that the LORD was
concerned about them and had seen their affliction, they bowed
down in worship. [EX 4:31]
Thus the LORD saved Israel on that day from the power of the Egyptians. When Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the seashore
and beheld the great power that the LORD had shown against the
Egyptians, they feared the LORD and believed in him and in his
servant Moses. [EX 14:30-31]
And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people
spurn me? How long will they refuse to believe in me, despite all
the signs I have performed among them?" [NUM 14:11]
If I appealed to him and he answered my call, I could not
believe that he would hearken to my words [JOB 9:16]
I believe I shall enjoy the LORD'S goodness in the land of
the living. [Taken from PS 27:13]
For they did not believe in God, did not trust in his saving
power. So he commanded the skies above; the doors of heaven he
opened. God rained manna upon them for food; bread from heaven he
gave them. In spite of all this they went on sinning, they did not
believe in his wonders. [PS 78:22-24,32]
Yet he saved them for his name's sake to make his power known.
He roared at the Red Sea and it dried up. He led them through the
deep as through a desert. He rescued them from hostile hands,
freed them from the power of the enemy. The waters covered their
oppressors; not one of them survived. Then they believed his words and sang
songs of praise. But they soon forgot all he had done; they had no
patience for his plan. They forgot the God who saved them, who did
great deeds in Egypt, Next they despised the beautiful land; they
did not believe the promise. [PS 106:8-13,21,24]
The simpleton believes everything, but the shrewd man measures
his steps. [PROV 14:15]
Because he is found by those who test him not, and he manifests
himself to those who do not disbelieve him. [WISDOM 1:2]
Therefore you rebuke offenders little by little, warn them, and
remind them of the sins they are committing, that they may abandon
their wickedness and believe in you, O LORD! [WISDOM 12:2]
For you show your might when the perfection of your power is
disbelieved; and in those who know you, you rebuke temerity.
[WISDOM 12:17]
That your sons whom you loved might learn, O LORD, that it is
not the various kinds of fruits that nourish man, but it is your
word that preserves those who believe you! [WISDOM 16:26]
For though they disbelieved at every turn on account of
sorceries, at the destruction of the first-born they acknowledged
that the people was God's son. [WISDOM 18:13]
Admonish your friend - often it may be slander; every story you
must not believe. [SIRACH 19:14]
Like a man who catches at shadows or chases the wind, is the
one who believes in dreams. What is seen in dreams is to reality
what the reflection of a face is to the face itself. Can the
unclean produce the clean? Can the liar ever speak the truth?
Divination, omens and dreams all are unreal; what you already
expect, the mind depicts. Unless it be a vision specially sent by
the Most High, fix not your heart on it; For dreams have led many
astray, and those who believed in them have perished. [SIRACH
34:2-7]
You are my witnesses, says the LORD, my servants whom I have
chosen To know and believe in me and understand that it is I.
Before me no god was formed, and after me there shall be none.
[ISA 43:10]
For even your own brothers, the members of your father's house,
betray you; they have recruited a force against you. Do not
believe them, even if they are friendly to you in their words. [JER
12:6]
The kings of the earth did not believe, nor any of the world's
inhabitants, That enemy or foe could enter the gates of Jerusalem.
[LAM 4:12]
When the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast
and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth. [Taken from
JONAH 3:5]
When (Jesus) entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him,
saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully."
He said to him, "I will come and cure him." The centurion said in reply,
"Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed.
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, "Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel
have I found such faith. And Jesus said to the centurion, "You may go; as you have believed, let it be done for you." And at that very hour (his) servant was healed.
[Taken from MT 8:5-8,10,13]
And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed (him), crying out, "Son of
David, have pity on us!" When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I can do this?" "Yes, Lord," they said to him. Then he touched their eyes and said, "Let it be done for you according to your faith."
[MT 9:27-29]
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me
to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung
around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea." [MT
18:6]
When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not
believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when
you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.
[MT 21:32]
If anyone says to you then, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or,
'There he is!' do not believe it. False messiahs and false prophets will arise, and they will perform signs and wonders so great as to deceive, if that were possible, even the elect.
Behold, I have told it to you beforehand. So if they say to you, 'He is in the desert,' do not go out
there; if they say, 'He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. [MT
24:23-26]
"He saved others; he cannot save himself. So he is the
king of Israel! Let him come down from the cross now, and we will
believe in him." [MT 27:42]
"This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at
hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." [MK 1:15]
Then the boy's father cried out, "I do believe, help my
unbelief!" [MK 9:24]
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe (in
me) to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were
put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea." [MK 9:42]
Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be lifted
up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but
believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him.
[MK 11:23]
Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe
that you will receive it and it shall be yours. [MK 11:24]
If anyone says to you then, 'Look, here is the Messiah! Look,
there he is!' do not believe it. False messiahs and false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders in order to mislead, if that were possible, the elect.
Be watchful! I have told it all to you beforehand. [MK 13:21-23]
"Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the
cross that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified
with him also kept abusing him. [MK 15:32]
Later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them
and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because
they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised.
[Taken from MK 16:14]
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does
not believe will be condemned. [MK 16:16]
"These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they
will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents
with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."
[Taken from MK 16:17]
Then Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this?
For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." And
the angel said to him in reply, "I am Gabriel, who stand
before God. I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this
good news. But now you will be speechless and unable to talk until
the day these things take place, because you did not believe my
words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time." [LK
1:18-20]
"Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you
by the Lord would be fulfilled." [LK 1:45]
"This is the meaning of the parable. The seed is the word
of God. Those on the path are the ones who have heard, but the
devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts that they
may not believe and be saved. Those on rocky ground are the ones
who, when they hear, receive the word with joy, but they have no
root; they believe only for a time and fall away in time of trial.
As for the seed that fell among thorns, they are the ones who have
heard, but as they go along, they are choked by the anxieties and
riches and pleasures of life, and they fail to produce mature
fruit. But as for the seed that fell on rich soil, they are the
ones who, when they have heard the word, embrace it with a
generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance." [LK
8:11-15]
When day came the council of elders of the people met, both
chief priests and scribes, and they brought him before their
Sanhedrin. They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us,"
but he replied to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe,
and if I question, you will not respond. But from this time on the
Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of
God." [LK 22:66-69]
Then they returned from the tomb and announced all these things
[concerning the resurrection of Jesus] to the eleven and to all
the others...but their story seemed like nonsense and they did not
believe them. [Taken from LK 24:9,11]
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel;
and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took
place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they
were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body;
they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of
angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us
went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described,
but him they did not see." And he said to them, "Oh, how
foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the
prophets spoke!" [LK 24:21-25]
He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all
might believe through him. [JN 1:7]
But to those who did accept him he gave power to become
children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born
not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man's
decision but of God. [JN 1:12-13]
Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God;
you are the King of Israel." Jesus answered and said to him,
"Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the
fig tree? You will see greater things than this." And he said
to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky
opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son
of Man." [JN 1:49-51]
Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with water." So they
filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Draw some out
now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it. And when
the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine... Jesus did
this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so
revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.
[Taken from JN 2:7-9,11]
At this the Jews answered and said to him, "What sign can
you show us for doing this?" Jesus answered and said to them,
"Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it
up." The Jews said, "This temple has been under
construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in
three days?" But he was speaking about the temple of his
body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples
remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the
scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. [JN 2:18-22]
While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began
to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. [JN
2:23]
"If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how
will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has
gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven,
the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who
believes in him may have eternal life." For God so loved the
world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in
him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not
send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the
world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not
be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been
condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son
of God. [JN 3:12-18]
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever
disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains
upon him. [JN 3:36]
Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him
because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me
everything I have done." [JN 4:39]
Many more began to believe in him because of his word, and they
said to the woman, "We no longer believe because of your
word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is
truly the savior of the world." [JN 4:41-42]
Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and
wonders, you will not believe." The royal official said to
him, "Sir, come down before my child dies." Jesus said
to him, "You may go; your son will live." The man
believed what Jesus said to him and left. While he was on his way
back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live. He
asked them when he began to recover. They told him, "The
fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon." The
father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him,
"Your son will live," and he and his whole household
came to believe. [JN 4:48-53]
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in
the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to
condemnation, but has passed from death to life. [JN 5:24]
Moreover, the Father who sent me has testified on my behalf.
But you have never heard his voice nor seen his form, and you do
not have his word remaining in you, because you do not believe in
the one whom he has sent. You search the scriptures, because you
think you have eternal life through them; even they testify on my
behalf. But you do not want to come to me to have life. "I do
not accept human praise; moreover, I know that you do not have the
love of God in you. I came in the name of my Father, but you do
not accept me; yet if another comes in his own name, you will
accept him. How can you believe, when you accept praise from one
another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God?
Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father: the one who
will accuse you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope. For
if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he
wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will
you believe my words?" [JN 5:37-47]
So they said to him, "What can we do to accomplish the
works of God?" Jesus answered and said to them, "This is
the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." So
they said to him, "What sign can you do, that we may see and
believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the
desert, as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to
eat.'" So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives
you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which
comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." So they
said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always." Jesus
said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me
will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.
But I told you that although you have seen me, you do not believe.
Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will
not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven
not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And
this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose
anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the
last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who
sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I
shall raise him on the last day." [Taken from JN
6:28-40]
"Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I
am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert,
but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so
that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came
down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and
the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the
world." The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying,
"How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus said
to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh
of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within
you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life,
and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food,
and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my
blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent
me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who
feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that
came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still
died, whoever eats this bread will live forever." Then many
of his disciples who were listening said, "This saying is
hard; who can accept it?" Since Jesus knew that his disciples
were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock
you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he
was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is
of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew
from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who
would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told
you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my
Father." As a result of this, many of his disciples returned
to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus
then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You
have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are
convinced that you are the Holy One of God." [Taken from JN
6:47-69]
So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea,
so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. No
one works in secret if he wants to be known publicly. If you do
these things, manifest yourself to the world." For his
brothers did not believe in him. So Jesus said to them, "My
time is not yet here, but the time is always right for you." [JN
7:3-6]
But many of the crowd began to believe in him, and said,
"When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this
man has done?" [JN 7:31]
"Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: 'Rivers of living
water will flow from within him.'" He said this in reference
to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to
receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had
not yet been glorified. [JN 7:38-39]
"That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if
you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins." [JN
8:24]
So Jesus said (to them), "When you lift up the Son of Man,
then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own,
but I say only what the Father taught me. The one who sent me is
with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is
pleasing to him." Because he spoke this way, many came to
believe in him. [JN 8:28-30]
Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, "If you
remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will
know the truth, and the truth will set you free." [JN
8:31-32]
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would
love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my
own, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I am saying?
Because you cannot bear to hear my word. You belong to your father
the devil and you willingly carry out your father's desires. He
was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth,
because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks
in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But
because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. Can any of you
charge me with sin? If I am telling the truth, why do you not
believe me? Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God; for
this reason you do not listen, because you do not belong to
God." [JN 8:42-47]
When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and
said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" He answered
and said, "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?"
Jesus said to him, "You have seen him and the one speaking
with you is he." He said, "I do believe, Lord," and
he worshiped him. [JN 9:35-38]
So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long
are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah,
tell us plainly." Jesus answered them, "I told you and
you do not believe. The works I do in my Father's name testify to
me. But you do not believe, because you are not among my sheep. My
sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them
eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them
out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater
than all, and no one can take them out of the Father's hand. The
Father and I are one." [JN 10:24-30]
Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I
said, "You are gods"'? If it calls them gods to whom the
word of God came, and scripture cannot be set aside, can you say
that the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the
world blasphemes because I said, 'I am the Son of God'? If I do
not perform my Father's works, do not believe me; but if I perform
them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that
you may realize and understand that the Father is in me and I am
in the Father." Then they tried again to arrest him; but he
escaped from their power. And many there began to believe in him.
[Taken from JN 10:34-39,42]
So then Jesus said to them clearly, "Lazarus has died. And
I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe. Let
us go to him." Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had
been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know
that whatever you ask of God, God will give you." Jesus said
to her, "Your brother will rise." Martha said to him,
"I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last
day." Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the
life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and
everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you
believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come
to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who
is coming into the world." Jesus said to her, "Did I not
tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?"
So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said,
"Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always
hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they
may believe that you sent me." And when he had said this, he
cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead
man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face
was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, "Untie him and
let him go." Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and
seen what he had done began to believe in him. But some of them
went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. So the
chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said,
"What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs.
If we leave him alone, all will believe in him, and the Romans
will come and take away both our land and our nation." [JN
11:14-15,21-27,40-48]
"While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may
become children of the light." After he had said this, Jesus
left and hid from them. Although he had performed so many signs in
their presence they did not believe in him, in order that the word
which Isaiah the prophet spoke might be fulfilled: "Lord, who
has believed our preaching, to whom has the might of the Lord been
revealed?" For this reason they could not believe, because
again Isaiah said: "He blinded their eyes and hardened their
heart, so that they might not see with their eyes and understand
with their heart and be converted, and I would heal them."
Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke about him.
Nevertheless, many, even among the authorities, believed in him,
but because of the Pharisees they did not acknowledge it openly in
order not to be expelled from the synagogue. For they preferred
human praise to the glory of God. Jesus cried out and said,
"Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in
the one who sent me, and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me.
I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in
me might not remain in darkness." [JN 12:36-46]
From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it
happens you may believe that I AM. [JN 13:19]
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in
me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The
Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am
in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of
the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes
in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than
these, because I am going to the Father. [JN 14:10-12]
You heard me tell you, 'I am going away and I will come back to
you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the
Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you
this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. [JN
14:28-29]
But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For
if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I
will send him to you. And when he comes he will convict the world
in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation: sin, because
they do not believe in me; righteousness, because I am going to
the Father and you will no longer see me; condemnation, because
the ruler of this world has been condemned. [Taken from JN
16:7-11]
For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and
have come to believe that I came from God. [JN 16:27]
"Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not
need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that
you came from God." Jesus answered them, "Do you believe
now? Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you
will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But
I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you
this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will
have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world."
[JN 16:30-33]
Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, because
the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted
them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have
believed that you sent me. [JN 17:7-8]
"I pray not only for them, but also for those who will
believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as
you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us,
that the world may believe that you sent me." [JN 17:20-21]
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then
of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came
to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his
legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and
immediately blood and water flowed out. An eyewitness has
testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is
speaking the truth, so that you also may come to believe. For this
happened so that the scripture passage might be fulfilled:
"Not a bone of it will be broken." [Taken from JN
19:32-36]
Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived
at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. [JN 20:8]
Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them
when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, "We have
seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the
mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the
nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."
Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was
with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood
in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." Then he
said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and
bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be
unbelieving, but believe." Thomas answered and said to him,
"My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you
come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who
have not seen and have believed." [JN 20:24-29]
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of (his)
disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written
that you may (come to) believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son
of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his
name. [JN 20:30-31]
All who believed were together and had all things in common
[ACTS 2:44]
But many of those who heard the word came to believe and the
number of men grew to about five thousand [Taken from ACTS 4:4]
The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no
one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had
everything in common. [ACTS 4:32]
Yet more than ever, believers in the Lord, great numbers of men
and women, were added to them. [ACTS 5:14]
Once they began to believe Philip as he preached the good
news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, men
and women alike were baptized. Even Simon himself believed and, after being baptized, became
devoted to Philip; and when he saw the signs and mighty deeds that
were occurring, he was astounded. [ACTS 8:12-13]
Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed. Then he
turned to her body and said, "Tabitha, rise up." She
opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. He gave her his hand and
raised her up, and when he had called the holy ones and the
widows, he presented her alive. This became known all over Joppa,
and many came to believe in the Lord. [ACTS 9:40-42]
"To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who
believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his
name." [ACTS 10:43]
The hand of the Lord was with them and a great number who
believed turned to the Lord. [ACTS 11:21]
When the proconsul saw what had happened, he came to believe,
for he was astonished by the teaching about the Lord. [ACTS 13:12]
"In [Jesus] every believer is justified. Be careful, then, that
what was said in the prophets not come about: 'Look on, you
scoffers, be amazed and disappear. For I am doing a work in your
days, a work that you will never believe even if someone tells
you.'" [Taken from ACTS 13:39-41]
The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and glorified
the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came
to believe [Taken from ACTS 13:48]
In Iconium they entered the Jewish synagogue together and spoke
in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks came to
believe, although the disbelieving Jews stirred up and poisoned
the minds of the Gentiles against the brothers. [ACTS 14:1-2]
After much debate had taken place, Peter got up and said to
them, "My brothers, you are well aware that from early days
God made his choice among you that through my mouth the Gentiles
would hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the
Holy Spirit just as he did us. He made no distinction between us and them, for by faith he purified their hearts.
Why, then, are you now putting God to the test by placing on the shoulders of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as
they."
[ACTS 15:7-11]
And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you and your
household will be saved." [ACTS 16:31]
These Jews were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all willingness and examined the
scriptures daily to determine whether these things were so. Many of them became believers, as did not a few of the influential Greek women and men. [ACTS
17:11-12]
Crispus, the synagogue official, came to believe in the Lord
along with his entire household, and many of the Corinthians who
heard believed and were baptized. [ACTS 18:8]
And when he wanted to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged
him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. After his
arrival he gave great assistance to those who had come to believe
through grace. [ACTS 18:27]
He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They answered him, "We have never even heard that there is a
Holy Spirit."
He said, "How were you baptized?" They replied, "With the baptism of John."
Paul then said, "John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus."
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus
[ACTS 19:2-5]
Many of those who had become believers came forward and openly
acknowledged their former practices. [ACTS 19:18]
He greeted them, then proceeded to tell them in detail what God had accomplished among the Gentiles through his ministry.
They praised God when they heard it but said to him,
"Brother, you see how many thousands of believers there are
from among the Jews, and they are all zealous observers of the
law." [ACTS 21:19-20]
But this I do admit to you, that according to the Way, which
they call a sect, I worship the God of our ancestors and I believe
everything that is in accordance with the law and written in the
prophets. [ACTS 24:14]
King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you
believe. Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You will soon persuade me to play the
Christian." [ACTS 26:27-28]
Some were convinced by what he had said, while others did not
believe. Without reaching any agreement among themselves they began to leave; then Paul made one final statement. "Well did the
Holy Spirit speak to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah, saying:
'Go to this people and say: You shall indeed hear but not understand. You shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this people; they will not hear with their ears; they have closed their eyes, so they may not see with their eyes and hear with their ears
and understand with their heart and be converted, and I heal them.'"
[ACTS 28:24-27]
For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for
the salvation of everyone who believes: for Jew first, and then
Greek. [ROM 1:16]
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets,
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction;
all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus,
whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood, to prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously
committed [Taken from ROM 3:21-25]
For what does the scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as
righteousness." A worker's wage is credited not as a gift, but as something due. But when one does not work, yet believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness.
So also David declares the blessedness of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
"Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not record." [ROM 4:3-8]
If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall
also live with him. [ROM 6:8]
As it is written: "Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion
that will make people stumble and a rock that will make them fall,
and whoever believes in him shall not be put to shame." [Taken
from ROM
9:33]
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.
For the scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be put to shame."
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him.
For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach?
And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring (the) good
news!" But not everyone has heeded the good news; for Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what was heard from us?"
Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.
[Taken from ROM 10:9-17]
Do not boast against the branches. If you do boast, consider that you do not support the root; the root supports you.
Indeed you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in."
That is so. They were broken off because of unbelief, but you are there because of faith. So do not become haughty, but stand in
awe. For if God did not spare the natural branches, (perhaps) he will not spare you either.
See, then, the kindness and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but God's kindness to you, provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off. And they also, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated one, how much more will they who belong to it by nature be grafted back into their own olive tree.
[ROM 11:18-24]
[Love] bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
endures all things. [Taken from 1COR 13:7]
Thus, tongues are a sign not for those who believe but for
unbelievers, whereas prophecy is not for unbelievers but for those
who believe. [1COR 14:22]
Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the
word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. [1COR 15:2]
And even though our gospel is veiled, it is veiled for those who are perishing,
in whose case the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that they may not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for the sake of Jesus.
For God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to bring to light the
knowledge of the glory of God on the face of (Jesus) Christ. [2COR
4:3-6]
Do not be yoked with those who are different, with unbelievers.
For what partnership do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or
what fellowship does light have with darkness? What accord has
Christ with Beliar? Or what has a believer in common with an
unbeliever? [2COR 6:14-15]
Thus Abraham "believed God, and it was credited to him as
righteousness." [GAL 3:6]
But scripture confined all things under the power of sin, that
through faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those
who believe. [GAL 3:22]
In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel
of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the
promised Holy Spirit, which is the first installment of our inheritance toward redemption as God's possession, to the praise of his glory.
[EPH 1:13-14]
May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones,
and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the exercise of his great might, which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens,
far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come.
[Taken from EPH 1:18-21]
For to you has been granted, for the sake of Christ, not only
to believe in him but also to suffer for him. [PHIL 1:29]
And for this reason we too give thanks to God unceasingly, that,
in receiving the word of God from hearing us, you received
not a human word but, as it truly is, the word of God, which is
now at work in you who believe. [1THES 2:13]
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God,
through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
[1THES 4:14]
For it is surely just on God's part to repay with afflictions those who are afflicting you, and to grant rest along with us to you who are undergoing afflictions, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels, in blazing fire, inflicting punishment on those who do not acknowledge God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal ruin, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power, when he comes to be glorified among his holy ones
and to be marveled at on that day among all who have believed, for our testimony to you was believed.
[2THES 1:6-10]
Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power so that they
may believe the lie, that all who have not believed the truth but have approved
wrongdoing may be condemned. [2THES 2:11-12]
But we ought to give thanks to God for you always, brothers
loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits for
salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in
truth. [2THES 2:13]
I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and an arrogant man,
but I have been mercifully treated because I acted out of
ignorance in my unbelief. [1TM 1:13]
For this we toil and struggle, because we have set our hope on
the living God, who is the savior of all, especially of those who
believe. [1TM 4:10]
Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example for
those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
[1TM 4:12]
And whoever does not provide for relatives and especially
family members has denied the faith and is worse than an
unbeliever. [1TM 5:8]
If any woman believer has widowed relatives, she must assist
them; the church is not to be burdened, so that it will be able to
help those who are truly widows. [1TM 5:16]
Those whose masters are believers must not take advantage of
them because they are brothers but must give better service
because those who will profit from their work are believers and
are beloved. [1TM 6:2]
But you, remain faithful to what you have learned and believed,
because you know from whom you learned it [Taken from 2TM 3:14]
His saying is trustworthy. I want you to insist on these
points, that those who have believed in God be careful to devote
themselves to good works; these are excellent and beneficial to
others. [Taken from TI 3:8]
For we who believed enter into that rest, just as he has
said: "As I swore in my wrath, 'They shall not enter into my
rest,'" and yet his works were accomplished at the foundation
of the world. [Taken from HEB 4:3]
But without faith it is impossible to please him, for anyone
who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards
those who seek him. [HEB 11:6]
You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons
believe that and tremble. [JMS 2:19]
Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham
believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,"
and he was called "the friend of God." [JMS 2:23]
Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do
not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an
indescribable and glorious joy [Taken from 1PT 1:8]
He was known before the foundation of the world but revealed in the final time for you,
who through him believe in God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
[1PT 1:20-21]
For it says in scripture: "Behold, I am laying a stone in
Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in
it shall not be put to shame." [1PT 2:6]
Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow
believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings. [1PT
5:9]
And his commandment is this: we should believe in the name
of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he
commanded us. [1JN 3:23]
We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for
us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and
God in him. [1JN 4:16]
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten
by God, and everyone who loves the father loves also the one
begotten by him. [Taken from 1JN 5:1]
Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who
believes that Jesus is the Son of God? [Taken from 1JN 5:5]
Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony
within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar
by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son. [1JN 5:10]
I write these things to you so that you may know that you
have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of
God.[1JN 5:13]
I wish to remind you, although you know all things, that the
Lord who once saved a people from the land of Egypt later
destroyed those who did not believe. [Taken from JUDE 1:5]
