These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children
dance. They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute. They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world. Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!" Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink! For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished? [JOB 21:11-14,20-21]
Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have drawn a defense
against your foes, to silence enemy and avenger. [PS 8:3]
Therefore the just despoiled the wicked; and they sang, O LORD, your holy name
because Wisdom opened the mouths of the dumb, and gave ready
speech to infants. [WISDOM 10:20-21]
As a rebuke to the decree for the slaying of infants, You gave
them abundant water in an unhoped-for way [Taken from WISDOM 11:7]
When they determined to put to death the infants of the holy
ones, and when a single boy had been cast forth but saved, As a
reproof you carried off their multitude of sons and made them
perish all at once in the mighty water. [WISDOM 18:5]
The baby shall play by
the cobra's den, and the child lay his hand on the adder's lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea. [ISA 11:8-9]
Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the
child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget
you. [ISA 49:15]
No longer shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few
days, or an old man who does not round out his full lifetime; He
dies a mere youth who reaches but a hundred years, and he who
fails of a hundred shall be thought accursed. [ISA 65:20]
I drew them with human cords, with bands of love; I fostered
them like one who raises an infant to his cheeks; Yet, though I
stooped to feed my child, they did not know that I was their
healer. [HOSEA 11:4]
Gather the people, notify the congregation; Assemble the
elders, gather the children and the infants at the breast; Let the
bridegroom quit his room, and the bride her chamber. [JOEL 2:16]
The blind and the lame approached him in the temple area, and he cured them. When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wondrous things
he was doing, and the children crying out in the temple area, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant
and said to him, "Do you hear what they are saying?" Jesus said to them, "Yes; and have you never read the text, 'Out of the mouths of infants and nurslings you have brought forth praise'?"
[MT 21:14-16]
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the
Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy."
[LK 1:41-44]
The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.
And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."
And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
"Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."
When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us."
So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.
When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child.
[LK 2:10-17]
People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch
them, and when the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. Jesus, however, called the children to himself and said, "Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it."
[LK 18:15-17]
Brothers, I could not talk to you as spiritual people, but as
fleshly people, as infants in Christ. I fed you milk, not solid food, because you were unable to take it. Indeed, you are still not able, even now,
for you are still of the flesh. While there is jealousy and rivalry among you,
are you not of the flesh, and behaving in an ordinary human way?
[1COR 3:1-3]
Brothers, stop being childish in your thinking. In respect to
evil be like infants, but in your thinking be mature. [1COR 14:20]
Until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,
to the extent of the full stature of Christ, so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery, from their cunning in the interests of deceitful
scheming [Taken from EPH 4:13-14]
Rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, insincerity, envy, and all slander;
like newborn infants, long for pure spiritual milk so that through it you may grow into salvation,
for you have tasted that the Lord is good. [1PT 2:1-3]

the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea,
the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the
earth." [GEN 1:28]

you; kings shall stem from you. [GEN 17:6]
As for Ishmael, I am heeding you: I hereby bless him. I will
make him fertile and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall
become the father of twelve chieftains, and I will make of him a
great nation. [GEN 17:20]
May God Almighty bless you and make you fertile, multiply you
that you may become an assembly of peoples. [GEN 28:3]
God also said to him: "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and
multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, shall stem from
you, and kings shall issue from your loins." [GEN 35:11]

into an assembly of tribes, and I will give this land to your
descendants after you as a permanent possession.' [Taken from GEN 48:4]
When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, he made her fruitful,
while Rachel remained barren. [GEN 29:31]
The LORD, your God, you shall worship; then I will bless your food and drink, and I will remove all sickness from your midst;
no woman in your land will be barren or miscarry; and I will give you a full span of life.
[EX 23:25-26]
I will look with favor upon you, and make you fruitful and
numerous, as I carry out my covenant with you. [LEV 26:9]
You will be blessed above all peoples; no man or woman among
you shall be childless nor shall your livestock be barren. [DEUT
7:14]
There was a certain man from Zorah, of the clan of the Danites,
whose name was Manoah. His wife was barren and had borne no
children. An angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her,
"Though you are barren and have had no children, yet you will
conceive and bear a son." [JUDG 13:2-3]
But (he gave) a double portion to Hannah because he loved her, though the
LORD had made her barren. Her rival, to upset her, turned it into a constant reproach to
her that the LORD had left her barren. This went on year after year; each time they made their pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the LORD, Peninnah would approach her, and Hannah would weep and refuse to eat. Her husband Elkanah used to ask her: "Hannah, why do you weep, and why do you refuse to eat? Why do you grieve?
Am I not more to you than ten sons?"... In her bitterness she prayed to the LORD, weeping copiously,
and she made a vow, promising: "O LORD of hosts, if you look with pity on the misery of your handmaid, if you remember me and do not forget me, if you give your handmaid a male child, I will give him to the LORD for as long as he lives; neither wine nor liquor shall he drink, and no razor shall ever touch his head."
... Early the next morning they worshiped before the LORD, and then returned to their home in Ramah.
When Elkanah had relations with his wife Hannah, the LORD remembered her.
She conceived, and at the end of her term bore a son whom she called Samuel, since she had asked
the LORD for him.
[Taken from 1SAM 1:5-8,10-11,19-20]
The well-fed hire themselves out for bread, while the hungry batten on spoil.
The barren wife bears seven sons, while the mother of many languishes.
"The LORD puts to death and gives life; he casts down to the nether world; he raises up again.
The LORD makes poor and makes rich, he humbles, he also exalts." [Taken
from 1SAM 2:5-7]
You visit the earth and water it, make it abundantly fertile.
God's stream is filled with water; with it you supply the world
with grain. Thus do you prepare the earth [PS 65:10]
Like a fruitful vine your wife within your home, Like olive
plants your children around your table. [PS 128:3]
The nether world, and the barren womb; the earth, that is never
saturated with water, and fire, that never says,
"Enough!" [PROV 30:16]
Again, his wrath expels the nations and turns fertile land into
a salt marsh. [SIRACH 39:23]
You shall ask yourself: "Who has borne me these? I was
bereft and barren...; who has reared them? I
was left all alone; where then do these come from?" [Taken
from ISA
49:21]
Raise a glad cry, you barren one who did not bear, break forth
in jubilant song, you who were not in labor, For more numerous are
the children of the deserted wife than the children of her who has
a husband, says the LORD. [ISA 54:1]
For just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down And do
not return there till they have watered the earth, making it
fertile and fruitful, Giving seed to him who sows and bread to him
who eats [Taken from ISA 55:10]
Your mother was like a vine planted by the water; Fruitful and
branchy was she because of the abundant water. [EZEK 19:10]
But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren and both
were advanced in years. (Then) the angel of the Lord appeared to
(Zechariah), standing at the right of the altar of incense...the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid,
Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John.
And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his
birth"
[Taken from LK 1:7,11,13-14]
"And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son
in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called
barren; for nothing will be impossible for God." [LK 1:36-37]
Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children, for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.'
At that time people will say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!' for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?"
[LK 23:28-31]
For it is written: "Rejoice, you barren one who bore no
children; break forth and shout, you who were not in labor; for
more numerous are the children of the deserted one than of her who
has a husband." [GAL 4:27]
Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do
not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your
children, for indeed, the days are coming when people will say,

that never nursed.'" [LK 23:28-29]

He answered, "I
will make all my beauty pass before you, and in your presence I
will pronounce my name, 'LORD'; I who show favors to whom I will,
I who grant mercy to whom I will." [EX 33:19]
In all Israel there was not a man who could so be praised for
his beauty as Absalom, who was without blemish from the sole of
his foot to the crown of his head. [2SAM 14:25]
When these men saw Judith transformed in looks and differently
dressed, they were very much astounded at her beauty and said to
her, "May the God of our fathers bring you to favor, and make your undertaking a success, for the glory of the Israelites and the exaltation of Jerusalem." Judith bowed down to God.
[Taken from JDTH 10:7-8]
They marveled at her beauty, regarding the Israelites with
wonder because of her, and they said to one another, "Who can
despise this people that has such women among them? It is not wise
to leave one man of them alive, for if any were to be spared they
could beguile the whole world." [JDTH 10:19]
When Holofernes and his servants beheld Judith, they all
marveled at the beauty of her face. She threw herself down
prostrate before him, but his servants raised her up. [Taken from
JDTH 10:23]
Not by youths was their mighty one struck down, nor did titans
bring him low, nor huge giants attack him; But Judith, the
daughter of Merari, by the beauty of her countenance disabled him.
[JDTH 16:6]
And there was great mourning for Israel, in every place where they dwelt, and the rulers and the elders groaned. Virgins and young men
languished, and the beauty of the women was disfigured. [1MACC 1:25-26]
We see our sanctuary and our beauty and our glory laid waste,
And the Gentiles have defiled them! [1MACC 2:12]
One thing I ask of the LORD; this I seek: To dwell in the
LORD'S house all the days of my life, To gaze on the LORD'S
beauty, to visit his temple. [PS 27:4]
The wicked perish, the enemies of the LORD; Like the beauty of
meadows they vanish; like smoke they disappear. [PS 37:20]
Listen, my daughter, and understand; pay me careful heed. Forget your people and your father's house, that the king might desire your beauty.
He is your lord; honor him, daughter of Tyre. Then the richest of the people will seek your favor with gifts.
[PS 45:11-13]
From Zion God shines forth, perfect in beauty. [PS 50:2]
To keep you from your neighbor's wife, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. Lust not in your heart after her beauty, let her not captivate you with her glance! [PROV 6:24-25]
Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the
LORD is to be praised. [PROV 31:30]
Her I loved and sought after from my youth; I sought to take
her for my bride and was enamored of her beauty. [WISDOM 8:2]
Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods, let
them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these; for the
original source of beauty fashioned them. [WISDOM 13:3]
For from the greatness and the beauty of created things their
original author, by analogy, is seen. [WISDOM 13:5]
Avert your eyes from a comely woman; gaze not upon the beauty
of another's wife - Through woman's beauty many perish, for lust
for it burns like fire. [SIRACH 9:8]
Stumble not through woman's beauty, nor be greedy for her
wealth [SIRACH 25:20]
Like the sun rising in the LORD'S heavens, the beauty of a
virtuous wife is the radiance of her home. [SIRACH 26:16]
A woman's beauty makes her husband's face light up, for it
surpasses all else that charms the eye [SIRACH 36:22]
Charm and beauty delight the eye, but better than either, the
flowers of the field. [SIRACH 40:22]
The beauty, the glory, of the heavens are the stars that adorn
with their sparkling the heights of God, At whose command they keep their place and never relax in their vigils.
A weapon against the flood waters stored on high, lighting up the firmament by its brilliance,
Behold the rainbow! Then bless its Maker, for majestic indeed is its
splendor [SIRACH 43:9-11]
He added beauty to the feasts and solemnized the seasons of
each year with string music before the altar, providing sweet
melody for the psalms so that when the Holy Name was praised, before daybreak the sanctuary would resound.
[SIRACH 47:9-10]
Instead of perfume there will be stench, instead of the girdle,
a rope, And for the coiffure, baldness; for the rich gown, a
sackcloth skirt. Then, instead of beauty: Your men will fall by the sword, and your champions, in war; Her gates will lament and mourn, as the city sits desolate on the ground.
[ISA 3:24-26]
For, as close as the loincloth clings to a man's loins, so had
I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah
cling to me, says the LORD; to be my people, my renown, my praise,
my beauty. But they did not listen. [JER 13:11]
In the beauty of their ornaments they put their pride: they
made of them their abominable images (their idols). For this
reason I make them refuse. [EZEK 7:20]
You were renowned among the nations for your beauty, perfect as
it was, because of my splendor which I had bestowed on you, says
the Lord GOD. But you were captivated by your own beauty, you used your
renown to make yourself a harlot, and you lavished your harlotry
on every passer-by, whose own you became. [EZEK 16:14-15]
You became haughty of heart because of your beauty; for the
sake of splendor you debased your wisdom. I cast you to the earth,
so great was your guilt; I made you a spectacle in the sight of
kings. [EZEK 28:17]
"Whom do you excel in beauty?" [EZEK 32:19]
Susanna, very delicate and beautiful, was veiled; but those wicked men ordered her to uncover her face so as to sate themselves with her beauty.
All her relatives and the onlookers were weeping. In the midst of the people the two elders rose up and laid their hands on her head.
Through her tears she looked up to heaven, for she trusted in the Lord wholeheartedly. [DAN
13:31-35]
Putting him to one side, he ordered the other one to be
brought. "Offspring of Canaan, not of Judah," Daniel
said to him, "beauty has seduced you, lust has subverted your
conscience." [DAN 13:56]
And the LORD, their God, shall save them on that day, his people, like a flock.
For they are the jewels in a crown raised aloft over his land. For what wealth is theirs, and what beauty!
Grain that makes the youths flourish, and new wine, the maidens! [ZECH
9:16-17]
For the sun comes up with its scorching heat and dries up the
grass, its flower droops, and the beauty of its appearance
vanishes. So will the rich person fade away in the midst of his
pursuits. [JMS 1:11]
Your adornment should not be an external one: braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine clothes, but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which is precious in the sight of God.

The woman went and told her husband, "A man
of God came to me; he had the appearance of an angel of God,
terrible indeed. I did not ask him where he came from, nor did he
tell me his name. But he said to me, 'You will be with child and
will bear a son. So take neither wine nor strong drink, and eat
nothing unclean. For the boy shall be consecrated to God from the
womb, until the day of his death.'" Manoah then prayed to the
LORD. "O LORD, I beseech you," he said, "may the
man of God whom you sent, return to us to teach us what to do for
the boy who will be born." God heard the prayer of Manoah,
and the angel of God came again to the woman as she was sitting in
the field. [Taken from JUDG 13:6-9]
With full voice I cry to the LORD; with full
voice I beseech the LORD. Before God I pour out my complaint, lay
bare my distress. My spirit is faint within me, but you know my
path. Along the way I walk they have hidden a trap for me. I look
to my right hand, but no friend is there. There is no escape for
me; no one cares for me. I cry out to you, LORD, I say, You are my
refuge, my portion in the land of the living. Listen to my cry for
help, for I am brought very low. Rescue me from my pursuers, for
they are too strong for me. Lead me out of my prison, that I may
give thanks to your name. Then the just shall gather around me
because you have been good to me. [PS 142:2-8]
Then give the doctor his place lest he leave;
for you need him too. There are times that give him an advantage,
and he too beseeches God that his diagnosis may be correct and his
treatment bring about a cure. He who is a sinner toward his Maker
will be defiant toward the doctor. [Taken from SIRACH 38:12-15]
"What shall we do with you," they
asked, "that the sea may quiet down for us?" For the sea
was growing more and more turbulent. Jonah said to them,
"Pick me up and throw me into the sea, that it may quiet down
for you; since I know it is because of me that this violent storm
has come upon you." Still the men rowed hard to regain the
land, but they could not, for the sea grew ever more turbulent.
Then they cried to the LORD: "We beseech you, O LORD, let us
not perish for taking this man's life; do not charge us with
shedding innocent blood, for you, LORD, have done as you saw
fit." Then they took Jonah and threw him into the sea, and
the sea's raging abated. [Taken from JONAH 1:11-15]
But this was greatly displeasing to Jonah, and
he became angry. "I beseech you, LORD," he prayed,
"is not this what I said while I was still in my own country?
This is why I fled at first to Tarshish. I knew that you are a
gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, rich in clemency, loathe
to punish. And now, LORD, please take my life from me; for it is
better for me to die than to live." But the LORD asked,
"Have you reason to be angry?" [Taken from JONAH 4:1-4]

I announce to him that I
am condemning his family once and for all, because of this crime:
though he knew his sons were blaspheming God, he did not reprove
them. [1SAM 3:13]
Whom have you insulted and blasphemed, against whom have you
raised your voice. And lifted up your eyes on high? Against the
Holy One of Israel! [2KGS 19:22]
When they who were sent by the king blasphemed, your
angel went out and killed a hundred and eighty-five thousand of
them. [1MACC 7:41]
For four days Maccabeus and his men eagerly besieged the fortress.
Those inside, relying on the strength of the place, kept repeating outrageous blasphemies and uttering abominable words.
When the fifth day dawned, twenty young men in the army of Maccabeus, angered over such blasphemies, bravely stormed the wall and with savage fury cut down everyone they encountered.
[2MACC 10:33-35]
He who oppresses the poor blasphemes his Maker, but he who is
kind to the needy glorifies him. [PROV 14:31]
He who mocks the poor blasphemes his Maker; he who is glad at
calamity will not go unpunished. [PROV 17:5]
For wisdom is a kindly spirit, yet she acquits not the
blasphemer of his guilty lips; Because God is the witness of his
inmost self and the sure observer of his heart and the listener to
his tongue. [WISDOM 1:6]
A blasphemer is he who despises his father; accursed of his
Creator, he who angers his mother. [SIRACH 3:16]
Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be
forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be
forgiven. [MT 12:31]
For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery,
unchastity, theft, false witness, blasphemy. [MT 15:19]
"Amen, I say to you, all sins and all blasphemies that people
utter will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have
forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin." [MK 3:28-29]
"But what comes out of a person, that is what defiles. From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,
adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.
All these evils come from within and they defile." [MK 7:20-23]
"Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be
forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will
not be forgiven." [LK 12:10]
Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said,
"You are gods"'?
If it calls them gods to whom the word of God came, and scripture cannot be set aside,
can you say that the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world blasphemes because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?"
[JN 10:34-36]
I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and an arrogant man,
but I have been mercifully treated because I acted out of
ignorance in my unbelief. [1TM 1:13]
The beast was given a mouth uttering proud boasts and blasphemies, and it was given authority to act for forty-two months.
It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling and those who dwell in heaven.
It was also allowed to wage war against the holy ones and conquer them, and it was granted authority over every tribe, people, tongue, and nation.
All the inhabitants of the earth will worship it, all whose names were not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life, which belongs to the Lamb who was slain.

Taking the book of the
covenant, he read it aloud to the people, who answered, "All
that the LORD has said, we will heed and do." [EX 24:7]
"If you would only forgive their sin! If you will not, then
strike me out of the book that you have written." The LORD answered, "Him only who has sinned against me
will I strike out of my book." [EX 32:32-33]
"If you are not careful to observe every word of the law
which is written in this book, and to revere the glorious and
awesome name of the LORD, your God, he will smite you and your descendants with severe and constant blows, malignant and lasting maladies. He will again afflict you with all the diseases of Egypt which you dread, and they will persist among you.
Should there be any kind of sickness or calamity not mentioned in this book of the law, that too the LORD will bring upon you until you are destroyed. Of you who were numerous as the stars in the sky, only a few will be left, because you would not hearken to the voice of the LORD, your God." [DEUT
28:58-62]
You, however, must again heed the LORD'S voice and carry out all his commandments which I now enjoin on you.
Then the LORD, your God, will increase in more than goodly measure the returns from all your
labors...for the LORD, your God, will again take delight in your prosperity, even as he took delight in your fathers',
if only you heed the voice of the LORD, your God, and keep his commandments and statutes that are written in this book of the law, when you return to the LORD, your God, with all your heart and all your soul.
[Taken from DEUT 30:8-10]
Keep this book of the law on your lips. Recite it by day and by
night, that you may observe carefully all that is written in it;
then you will successfully attain your goal. [JOSH 1:8]
But the children of the murderers he did not put to death,
obeying the LORD'S command written in the book of the law of
Moses, "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children,
nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; each one
shall die for his own sin." [2KGS 14:6]
Ezra read plainly from the book of the law of God, interpreting
it so that all could understand what was read. [NEH 8:8]
Ezra read from the book of the law of God day after day, from
the first day to the last. They kept the feast for seven days, and
the solemn assembly on the eighth day, as was required. [NEH 8:18]
When they had taken their places, they read from the book of
the law of the LORD their God, for a fourth part of the day, and
during another fourth part they made their confession and
prostrated themselves before the LORD their God. [NEH 9:3]
In like manner Judas also collected for us the books that had
been scattered because of the war, and we now have them in our
possession. [2MACC 2:14]
Now I beg those who read this book not to be disheartened by
these misfortunes, but to consider that these chastisements were
meant not for the ruin but for the correction of our nation.
[2MACC 6:12]
My wanderings you have noted; are my tears not stored in your
vial, recorded in your book? [PS 56:9]
Strike them from the book of the living; do not count them
among the just! [PS 69:29]
Your eyes foresaw my actions; in your book all are written
down; my days were shaped, before one came to be. [PS 139:16]
As to more than these, my son, beware. Of the making of many
books there is no end, and in much study there is weariness for
the flesh. The last word, when all is heard: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is man's all;
because God will bring to judgment every work, with all its hidden qualities, whether good or bad.
[ECCL 12:12-14]
"He who obeys me will not be put to shame, he who serves me will never fail."
All this is true of the book of the Most High's covenant, the law which Moses commanded us as an inheritance for the community of Jacob.
It overflows, like the Pishon, with wisdom -
like the Tigris in the days of the new fruits. [SIRACH 24:21-23]
Wise instruction, appropriate proverbs, I have written in this
book, I, Jesus, son of Eleazar, son of Sirach, as they gushed
forth from my heart's understanding. [SIRACH 50:27]
On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book; And out of
gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see. [ISA 29:18]
Look in the book of the LORD and read: No one of these shall be
lacking, For the mouth of the LORD has ordered it, and his spirit
shall gather them there. [ISA 34:16]
"Jeremiah dictated all these words to me," Baruch
answered them, "and I wrote them down with ink in the
book." [JER 36:18]
She is the book of the precepts of God, the law that endures
forever; All who cling to her will live, but those will die who
forsake her. [BARUCH 4:1]
A surging stream of fire flowed out from where he sat;
Thousands upon thousands were ministering to him, and myriads upon
myriads attended him. The court was convened, and the books were
opened. [DAN 7:10]
"At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people;
It shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time.
At that time your people shall escape, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake;
some shall live forever, others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace. But the wise shall shine brightly like the splendor of the firmament,
And those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever.
As for you, Daniel, keep secret the message and seal the book until the end time; many shall fall away and evil shall increase."
[DAN 12:1-4]
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham...Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah. Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen
generations [MT 1:1,16-17]
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of (his)
disciples that are not written in this book. [JN 20:30]
There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these
were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world
would contain the books that would be written. [JN 21:25]
In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did
and taught [ACTS 1:1]
For all who depend on works of the law are under a curse; for
it is written, "Cursed be everyone who does not persevere in
doing all the things written in the book of the law." [GAL
3:10]
Yes, and I ask you also, my true yokemate, to help them, for
they have struggled at my side in promoting the gospel, along with
Clement and my other co-workers, whose names are in the book of
life. [PHIL 4:3]
"The victor will thus be dressed in white, and I
will never erase his name from the book of life but will
acknowledge his name in the presence of my Father and of his
angels." [RV 3:5]
I saw that one of its heads seemed to have been mortally
wounded, but this mortal wound was healed. Fascinated, the whole
world followed after the beast. They worshiped the dragon because
it gave its authority to the beast; they also worshiped the beast
and said, "Who can compare with the beast or who can fight
against it?" The beast was given a mouth uttering proud
boasts and blasphemies, and it was given authority to act for
forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against
God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling and those who dwell in
heaven. It was also allowed to wage war against the holy ones and
conquer them, and it was granted authority over every tribe,
people, tongue, and nation. All the inhabitants of the earth will
worship it, all whose names were not written from the foundation
of the world in the book of life, which belongs to the Lamb who
was slain. [Taken from RV 13:3-8]
The beast that you saw existed once but now exists no longer.
It will come up from the abyss and is headed for destruction. The
inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the
book of life from the foundation of the world shall be amazed when
they see the beast, because it existed once but exists no longer,
and yet it will come again. [RV 17:8]
I saw the dead, the great and the lowly, standing before the
throne, and scrolls were opened. Then another scroll was opened,
the book of life. The dead were judged according to their deeds,
by what was written in the scrolls. [RV 20:12]
Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was
thrown into the pool of fire. [RV 20:15]
Nothing unclean will enter it, nor any (one) who does
abominable things or tells lies. Only those will enter whose names
are written in the Lamb's book of life. [Taken from RV 21:27]
"Behold, I am coming soon." Blessed is the one who
keeps the prophetic message of this book. [RV 22:7]
But he said to me, "Don't! I am a fellow servant of yours
and of your brothers the prophets and of those who keep the
message of this book. Worship God." Then he said to me, "Do not seal up the prophetic words of
this book, for the appointed time is near." [RV 22:9-10]
I warn everyone who hears the prophetic words in this book: if
anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in
this book, and if anyone takes away from the words in this prophetic book,
God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy
city described in this book. [RV 22:18-19]

The angel said to me, "Why are you amazed? I will explain to
you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her,
the beast with the seven heads and the ten horns. The beast that
you saw existed once but now exists no longer. It will come up
from the abyss and is headed for destruction. The inhabitants of

Next I saw a large white throne and the one who was sitting on
it. The earth and the sky fled from his presence and there was no
place for them. I saw the dead, the great and the lowly, standing
before the throne, and scrolls were opened. Then another scroll
was opened, the book of life. The dead were judged according to
their deeds, by what was written in the scrolls. The sea gave up
its dead; then Death and Hades gave up their dead. All the dead
were judged according to their deeds. Then Death and Hades were
thrown into the pool of fire. (This pool of fire is the second
death.) Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of
life was thrown into the pool of fire. [RV 20:11-15]
I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God
almighty and the Lamb. The city had no need of sun or moon to
shine on it, for the glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was
the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and to it the kings
of the earth will bring their treasure. During the day its gates
will never be shut, and there will be no night there. The treasure
and wealth of the nations will be brought there, but nothing
unclean will enter it, nor any (one) who does abominable things or

Saul then ordered his servants to speak to David privately and
to say: "The king is fond of you, and all his officers love
you. You should become the king's son-in-law." But when
Saul's servants mentioned this to David, he said: "Do you
think it easy to become the king's son-in-law? I am poor and
insignificant." When his servants reported to him the nature
of David's answer, Saul commanded them to say this to David:
"The king desires no other price for the bride than the
foreskins of one hundred Philistines, that he may thus take
vengeance on his enemies." Saul intended in this way to bring
about David's death through the Philistines. When the servants
reported this offer to David, he was pleased with the prospect of
becoming the king's son-in-law. (Before the year was up,) David
made preparations and sallied forth with his men and slew two
hundred Philistines... So Saul gave him his daughter Michal in
marriage. Saul thus came to recognize that the LORD was with
David; besides, his own daughter Michal loved David. Therefore
Saul feared David all the more (and was his enemy ever after). [Taken
from 1SAM 18:22-29]
Ahithophel went on to say to Absalom: "Please let me
choose twelve thousand men, and be off in pursuit of David
tonight. If I come upon him when he is weary and discouraged, I
shall cause him panic. When all the people with him flee, I shall
strike down the king alone. Then I can bring back the rest of the
people to you, as a bride returns to her husband. It is the death
of only one man you are seeking; then all the people will be at
peace." This plan was agreeable to Absalom and to all the
elders of Israel. [2SAM 17:1-4]
Raphael said to the boy, "Brother Tobiah!" He
answered, "Yes, what is it?" Raphael continued:
"Tonight we must stay with Raguel, who is a relative of
yours. He has a daughter named Sarah, but no other child. Since
you are Sarah's closest relative, you before all other men have
the right to marry her. Also, her father's estate is rightfully
yours to inherit. Now the girl is sensible, courageous, and very
beautiful; and her father loves her dearly." He continued:
"Since you have the right to marry her, listen to me,
brother. Tonight I will ask the girl's father to let us have her
as your bride. When we return from Rages, we will hold the wedding
feast for her. I know that Raguel cannot keep her from you or let
her become engaged to another man; that would be a capital crime
according to the decree in the Book of Moses, and he knows that it
is your right, before all other men, to marry his daughter. So
heed my words, brother; tonight we must speak for the girl, so
that we may have her engaged to you. And when we return from
Rages, we will take her and bring her back with us to your
house." [TOBIT 6:11-13]
Taking all this, he went back to his own country, after he had
spoken with great arrogance and shed much blood. And there was
great mourning for Israel, in every place where they dwelt,
and the rulers and the elders groaned. Virgins and young men
languished, and the beauty of the women was disfigured. Every
bridegroom took up lamentation, she who sat in the bridal
chamber mourned, And the land was shaken on account of its
inhabitants, and all the house of Jacob was covered with
shame. [Taken from 1MACC 1:24-28]
Jonathan sent his brother as leader of the convoy to ask
permission of his friends, the Nabateans, to deposit with them
their great quantity of baggage. But the sons of Jambri from
Medaba made a raid and seized and carried off John and everything
he had. After this, word was brought to Jonathan and his brother
Simon: "The sons of Jambri are celebrating a great wedding,
and with a large escort they are bringing the bride, the daughter
of one of the great princes of Canaan, from Nadabath."
Remembering the blood of John their brother, they went up and hid
themselves under cover of the mountain. They watched, and suddenly
saw a noisy crowd with baggage; the bridegroom and his friends and
kinsmen had come out to meet the bride's party with tambourines
and musicians and much equipment. The Jews rose up against them
from their ambush and killed them. Many fell wounded, and after
the survivors fled toward the mountain, all their spoils were
taken. Thus the wedding was turned into mourning, and the sound of
music into lamentation. Having taken their revenge for the blood
of their brother, the Jews returned to the marshes of the Jordan. [1MACC
9:35-42]
The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky proclaims
its builder's craft. One day to the next conveys that
message; one night to the next imparts that knowledge. There
is no word or sound; no voice is heard; Yet their report goes
forth through all the earth, their message, to the ends of
the world. God has pitched there a tent for the sun; it comes
forth like a bridegroom from his chamber, and like an athlete
joyfully runs its course. From one end of the heavens it comes
forth; its course runs through to the other; nothing escapes
its heat. [PS 19:2-7]
You are all-beautiful, my beloved, and there is no blemish
in you. Come from Lebanon, my bride, come from Lebanon,
come! Descend from the top of Amana, from the top of
Senir and Hermon, From the haunts of lions, from the
leopards' mountains. You have ravished my heart, my sister, my
bride; you have ravished my heart with one glance of your
eyes, with one bead of your necklace. How beautiful is your
love, my sister, my bride, how much more delightful is your
love than wine, and the fragrance of your ointments than all
spices! Your lips drip honey, my bride...And the fragrance of your
garments is the fragrance of Lebanon. You are an enclosed
garden, my sister, my bride, an enclosed garden, a fountain
sealed. You are a park that puts forth pomegranates, with all
choice fruits... You are a garden fountain, a well of
water flowing fresh from Lebanon. Arise, north wind! Come,
south wind! blow upon my garden that its perfumes may
spread abroad. [Taken from SONG 4:7-13,15-16]
I have come to my garden, my sister, my bride; I gather my
myrrh and my spices [Taken from SONG 5:1]
Indeed, [Wisdom] reaches from end to end mightily and
governs all things well. Her I loved and sought after from my
youth; I sought to take her for my bride and was
enamored of her beauty. She adds to nobility the splendor of
companionship with God; even the LORD of all loved her. For
she is instructress in the understanding of God, the selector
of his works. And if riches be a desirable possession in
life, what is more rich than Wisdom, who produces all things?
[Taken from WISDOM 8:1-5]
He who fears the LORD will do this; he who is practiced in
the law will come to wisdom. Motherlike she will meet
him, like a young bride she will embrace him, Nourish him
with the bread of understanding, and give him the water of
learning to drink. [Taken from SIRACH 15:1-3]
Sing out, O heavens, and rejoice, O earth, break forth
into song, you mountains. For the LORD comforts his
people and shows mercy to his afflicted. But Zion said,
"The LORD has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten
me." Can a mother forget her infant, be without
tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she
forget, I will never forget you. See, upon the palms of my
hands I have written your name; your walls are ever before
me. Your rebuilders make haste, as those who tore you down
and laid you waste go forth from you; Look about and
see, they are all gathering and coming to you. As I
live, says the LORD, you shall be arrayed with them all as
with adornments, like a bride you shall fasten them on you.
Though you were waste and desolate, a land of ruins, Now
you shall be too small for your inhabitants, while those who
swallowed you up will be far away. [Taken from ISA 49:13-19]
I rejoice heartily in the LORD, in my God is the joy of
my soul; For he has clothed me with a robe of
salvation, and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, Like a
bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with
her jewels. [Taken from ISA 61:10]
For Zion's sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem's sake
I will not be quiet, Until her vindication shines forth like
the dawn and her victory like a burning torch. Nations shall
behold your vindication, and all kings your glory; You shall
be called by a new name pronounced by the mouth of the LORD. You
shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD, a royal
diadem held by your God. No more shall men call you
"Forsaken," or your land "Desolate," but
you shall be called "My Delight," and your land
"Espoused." For the LORD delights in you, and makes
your land his spouse. As a young man marries a virgin, your
Builder shall marry you; And as a bridegroom rejoices in his
bride so shall your God rejoice in you. [ISA 62:1-5]
This word of the LORD came to me: Go, cry out this message for
Jerusalem to hear! I remember the devotion of your
youth, how you loved me as a bride, Following me in the
desert, in a land unsown. Sacred to the LORD was
Israel, the first fruits of his harvest; Should anyone
presume to partake of them, evil would befall him, says the
LORD. [Taken from JER 2:1-3]
You, of this generation, take note of the word of the
Lord: Have I been a desert to Israel, a land of
darkness? Why do my people say, "We have moved
on, we will come to you no more"? Does a virgin forget
her jewelry, a bride her sash? Yet my people have
forgotten me days without number. [Taken from JER 2:31-32]
Therefore the showers were withheld, the spring rain
failed. But because you have a harlot's brow, you
refused to blush. Even now do you not call me, "My
father, you who are the bridegroom of my youth"?
"Will he keep his wrath forever, will he hold his grudge
to the end?" This is what you say; yet you do all
the evil you can. [Taken from JER 3:3-5]
In the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem I will silence the cry of joy, the cry of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the land will be turned to rubble.
[Taken from JER 7:34]
For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Before your
very eyes and during your lifetime I will silence from this place
the cry of joy and the cry of gladness, the voice of the
bridegroom and the voice of the bride. When you proclaim all these
words to this people and they ask you: "Why has the LORD
pronounced all these great evils against us? What is our crime?
What sin have we committed against the LORD, our God?" - you
shall answer them: It is because your fathers have forsaken me,
says the LORD, and followed strange gods, which they served and
worshiped; but me they have forsaken, and my law they have not
observed. And you have done worse than your fathers. Here you are,
every one of you, walking in the hardness of his evil heart
instead of listening to me. I will cast you out of this land into
a land that neither you nor your fathers have known; there you can
serve strange gods day and night, because I will not grant you my
mercy. [Taken from JER 16:9-13]
Hence, thus says the LORD of hosts: Since you would not listen
to my words, lo! I will send for and fetch all the tribes of the
north, says the LORD (and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar, king of
Babylon, my servant); I will bring them against this land, against
its inhabitants, and against all these neighboring nations. I will
doom them, making them an object of horror, of ridicule, of
everlasting reproach. Among them I will bring to an end the song
of joy and the song of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and
the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstone and the light
of the lamp. This whole land shall be a ruin and a desert. Seventy
years these nations shall be enslaved to the king of Babylon; but
when the seventy years have elapsed, I will punish the king of
Babylon and the nation and the land of the Chaldeans for their
guilt, says the LORD. Their land I will turn into everlasting
desert. Against that land I will fulfill all the words I have
spoken against it (all that is written in this book, which
Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations). They also shall be
enslaved to great nations and mighty kings, and thus I will repay
them according to their own deeds and according to their own
handiwork. [JER 25:8-14]
'Thus says the LORD: Bend your shoulders to the service of the
king of Babylon, that you may continue in the land I gave your
fathers: for if you do not hear the LORD'S voice so as to serve
the king of Babylon, I will make to cease from the cities of
Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem The sounds of
joy and the sounds of gladness, the voice of the
bridegroom and the voice of the bride; And all the land shall
be deserted, without inhabitants.' But we did not heed your
voice, or serve the king of Babylon, and you fulfilled the threats
you had made through your servants the prophets, to have the bones
of our kings and the bones of our fathers brought out from their
burial places. And indeed, they lie exposed to the heat of day and
the frost of night. They died in dire anguish, by hunger and the
sword and plague. And you reduced the house which bears your name
to what it is today, for the wickedness of the kingdom of Israel
and the kingdom of Judah. [BARUCH 2:21-26]
Blow the trumpet in Zion! proclaim a fast, call an
assembly; Gather the people, notify the
congregation; Assemble the elders, gather the
children and the infants at the breast; Let the
bridegroom quit his room, and the bride her chamber. Between
the porch and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the
LORD, weep, And say, "Spare, O LORD, your
people, and make not your heritage a reproach, with the
nations ruling over them! Why should they say among the
peoples, 'Where is their God?'" [JOEL 2:15-17]
Then the disciples of John approached him and said, "Why
do we and the Pharisees fast (much), but your disciples do not
fast?" Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests
mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come
when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will
fast." [Taken from MT 9:14-15]
"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who
took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them
were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking
their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks
of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed,
they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a
cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' Then all
those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones
said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are
going out.' But the wise ones replied, 'No, for there may not be
enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some
for yourselves.' While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom
came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with
him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came
and said, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for us!' But he said in
reply, 'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.' Therefore, stay
awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour." [MT 25:1-13]
The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to
fast. People came to him and objected, "Why do the disciples
of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your
disciples do not fast?" Jesus answered them, "Can the
wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as
they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. But the days
will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then
they will fast on that day." [Taken from MK 2:18-20]
And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often
and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same;
but yours eat and drink." Jesus answered them, "Can you
make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from
them, then they will fast in those days." [LK 5:33-35]
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and
the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also
invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of
Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (And) Jesus said
to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has
not yet come." His mother said to the servers, "Do
whatever he tells you." Now there were six stone water jars
there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to
thirty gallons. Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with
water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them,
"Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So
they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had
become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the
servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the
bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves good wine first,
and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you
have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this as the
beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his
glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. [JN 2:1-11]
Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew
about ceremonial washings. So they came to John and said to him,
"Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom
you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to
him." John answered and said, "No one can receive
anything except what has been given him from heaven. You
yourselves can testify that I said (that) I am not the Messiah,
but that I was sent before him. The one who has the bride is the
bridegroom; the best man, who stands and listens for him, rejoices
greatly at the bridegroom's voice. So this joy of mine has been
made complete. He must increase; I must decrease." [JN 3:25-30]
A mighty angel picked up a stone like a huge millstone and
threw it into the sea and said: "With such force will
Babylon the great city be thrown down, and will never be
found again. No melodies of harpists and musicians, flutists
and trumpeters, will ever be heard in you again. No
craftsmen in any trade will ever be found in you
again. No sound of the millstone will ever be heard in
you again. No light from a lamp will ever be seen in you
again. No voices of bride and groom will ever be heard
in you again. Because your merchants were the great ones of
the world, all nations were led astray by your magic potion.
In her was found the blood of prophets and holy ones and all
who have been slain on the earth." [RV 18:21-24]
Then I heard something like the sound of a great multitude
or the sound of rushing water or mighty peals of thunder, as
they said: "Alleluia! The Lord has established his
reign, (our) God, the almighty. Let us rejoice and be
glad and give him glory. For the wedding day of the Lamb
has come, his bride has made herself ready. She was allowed
to wear a bright, clean linen garment." (The linen
represents the righteous deeds of the holy ones.) [RV 19:6-8]
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and
the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also
saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from
God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud
voice from the throne saying, "Behold, God's dwelling is with
the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his
people and God himself will always be with them (as their God). He
will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more
death or mourning, wailing or pain, (for) the old order has passed
away." [RV 21:1-4]
One of the seven angels who held the seven bowls filled with
the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come here. I
will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." He took me in
spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city
Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. It gleamed with the
splendor of God. Its radiance was like that of a precious stone,
like jasper, clear as crystal. It had a massive, high wall, with
twelve gates where twelve angels were stationed and on which names
were inscribed, (the names) of the twelve tribes of the
Israelites. There were three gates facing east, three north, three
south, and three west. The wall of the city had twelve courses of
stones as its foundation, on which were inscribed the twelve names
of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The one who spoke to me held a
gold measuring rod to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.
The city was square, its length the same as (also) its width. He
measured the city with the rod and found it fifteen hundred miles
in length and width and height. He also measured its wall: one
hundred and forty-four cubits according to the standard unit of
measurement the angel used. The wall was constructed of jasper,
while the city was pure gold, clear as glass. The foundations of
the city wall were decorated with every precious stone; the first
course of stones was jasper, the second sapphire, the third
chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth
carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth
topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh hyacinth, and the
twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the
gates made from a single pearl; and the street of the city was of
pure gold, transparent as glass. I saw no temple in the city, for
its temple is the Lord God almighty and the Lamb. The city had no
need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gave it
light, and its lamp was the Lamb. The nations will walk by its
light, and to it the kings of the earth will bring their treasure.
During the day its gates will never be shut, and there will be no
night there. The treasure and wealth of the nations will be
brought there, but nothing unclean will enter it, nor any (one)
who does abominable things or tells lies. Only those will enter
whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. [RV 21:9-27]
Then he said to me, "Do not seal up the prophetic words of
this book, for the appointed time is near. Let the wicked still
act wickedly, and the filthy still be filthy. The righteous must
still do right, and the holy still be holy." "Behold, I
am coming soon. I bring with me the recompense I will give to each
according to his deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first
and the last, the beginning and the end." Blessed are they
who wash their robes so as to have the right to the tree of life
and enter the city through its gates. Outside are the dogs, the
sorcerers, the unchaste, the murderers, the idol-worshipers, and
all who love and practice deceit. "I, Jesus, sent my angel to
give you this testimony for the churches. I am the root and
offspring of David, the bright morning star." The Spirit and
the bride say, "Come." Let the hearer say,
"Come." Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the
one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water. [Taken from RV

Therefore, when you sell any land to your neighbor or buy any from
him, do not deal unfairly. [LEV 25:14]
You are to lend him neither money at interest nor food at a
profit. [LEV 25:37]
When the peoples of the land bring in merchandise or any kind
of grain for sale on the sabbath day, we will not buy from them on
the sabbath or on any other holyday. [Taken from NEH 10:32]
In those days I perceived that men in Judah were treading the
winepresses on the sabbath; that they were bringing in sheaves of
grain, loading them on their asses, together with wine, grapes,
figs, and every other kind of burden, and bringing them to
Jerusalem on the sabbath day. I warned them to sell none of these
victuals. I took the nobles of Judah to task, demanding of them: "What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day? Did not your fathers act in this same way, with the result that our God has brought all this evil upon us and upon this city? Would you add to the wrath against Israel by once more profaning the sabbath?"
NEH 13:15,17-18]
But Tobit kept telling her: "Hush, do not think about it,
my love; he is safe! Probably they have to take care of some
unexpected business there. The man who is traveling with him is
trustworthy, and is one of our own kinsmen. So do not worry over
him, my love. He will be here soon." [TOBIT 10:6]
"Order the gate of the city opened for me, that I may go
to carry out the business we discussed." So they ordered the
youths to open the gate for her as she requested. [JDTH 10:9]
He conferred with the wise men versed in the law, because the
king's business was conducted in general consultation with lawyers
and jurists. [ESTH 1:13]
For [wisdom's] profit is better than profit in silver, and
better than gold is her revenue [Taken from PROV 3:14]
In all labor there is profit, but mere talk tends only to
penury. [PROV 14:23]
And for profit in business and success with his hands he asks
facility of a thing with hands completely inert. [WISDOM 13:19]
Instead, he esteemed our life a plaything, and our span of life
a holiday for gain; "For one must," says he, "make
profit every way, be it even out of evil." [WISDOM 15:12]
A man may buy much for little, but pay for it seven times over.
[SIRACH 20:11]
A merchant can hardly remain upright, nor a shopkeeper free from sin;
For the sake of profit many sin, and the struggle for wealth blinds the eyes.
Like a peg driven between fitted stones, between buying and selling sin is wedged in.
Unless you earnestly hold fast to the fear of the LORD, suddenly your house will be thrown down.
[SIRACH 26:20, 27:1-3]
For the sake of profit many sin, and the struggle for wealth
blinds the eyes. [SIRACH 27:1]
Dispose of your treasure as the Most High commands, for that
will profit you more than the gold. [SIRACH 29:11]
Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about
war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a
miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man
about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle
slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they
give. [SIRACH 37:11]
But of these things be not ashamed, lest you sin through human respect: Of the law of the Most High and his precepts, or of the sentence to be passed upon the sinful; Of sharing the expenses of a business or a journey, or of dividing an inheritance or property; Of accuracy of scales and balances, or of tested measures and
weights; Of acquiring much or little, or of bargaining in dealing with a
merchant... Of numbering every deposit, or of recording all that is given or received;...Thus you will be truly cautious and recognized by all men as discreet.
[Taken from SIRACH 42:1-5,7-8]
Silence! you who dwell on the coast, you merchants of Sidon,
Whose messengers crossed the sea over the deep waters. The grain
of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue, and she the
merchant among nations. [ISA 23:2-3]
Blameless you were in your conduct from the day you were created,
Until evil was found in you, the result of your far-flung trade; violence was your business, and you sinned.
Then I banned you from the mountain of God... Because of your guilt, your sinful trade, I have profaned your sanctuaries,
And I have brought out fire from your midst which will devour you.
I have reduced you to dust on the earth in the sight of all who should see
you. [EZEK
28:15-16,18]
A merchant who holds a false balance, who loves to defraud! Though Ephraim says, "How rich I have become; I have made a fortune!"
All his gain shall not suffice him for the guilt of his sin. [HOSEA
12:8-9]
Then they said to one another, "Come, let us cast lots to find out on whose account we have met with this misfortune." So they cast lots, and thus singled out Jonah.
"Tell us," they said, "what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country, and to what people do you belong?"
[JONAH 1:7-8]
For they who buy them slay them with impunity; while those who
sell them say, "Blessed be the LORD, I have become
rich!" Even their own shepherds do not feel for them. [ZECH
11:5]
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls.
When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys
it. [MT 13:45-46]
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and
suffer the loss of his own soul? [MT 16:26]
"The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast
for his son.
He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come.
Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business.
Then he said to his servants, 'The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come.
Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you
find'... Many are invited, but few are chosen." [MT 22:2-3,5,8-9,14]
For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and
suffer the loss of his soul? [MK 8:36]
What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose
or forfeit himself? [LK 9:25]
To satisfy the one who recruited him, a soldier does not become
entangled in the business affairs of life. [2TM 2:4]
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we shall go into
such and such a town, spend a year there doing business, and make
a profit" - you have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow.
You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears. Instead you should say, "If the Lord wills it,
we shall live to do this or that." But now you are boasting in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
So for one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, it is a
sin.
[JMS 4:13-17]
Tend the flock of God in your midst, (overseeing) not by
constraint but willingly, as God would have it, not for shameful
profit but eagerly. [1PT 5:2]
It forced all the people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to be given a stamped image on their right hands or their foreheads,
so that no one could buy or sell except one who had the stamped
image of the beast's name or the number that stood for its name.
[RV 13:16-17]
For all the nations have drunk the wine of her licentious passion. The kings of the earth had intercourse with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her drive for
luxury...The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn for her, because there will be no more markets for their
cargo...The merchants who deal in these goods, who grew rich from her, will keep their distance for fear of the torment inflicted on
her... [RV 18:3,11,15]

BIG Book of Latin Activities For Catholics
Beginning - Intermediate (Vol. 1)
"Suitable For Children Or
Adults!" ~ "Perfect For Home Schoolers!"
+ + +
As many faithful Catholics already know,
the majestic
Latin language – the 'official language' of the Catholic Church –
promotes unity, helps safeguard the purity of doctrine, connects us with
our Catholic ancestors, allows us to pray in "one voice", and even ties
back to the inscription on the Cross which was written in Hebrew, Latin,
and Greek. The Latin language is still used today in the precious
treasure that is the
Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, in 'everyday speech' (much of
English is derived from Latin), in mottos, in specialized fields, and in
educational endeavors. It has been shown that the study of Latin brings
many benefits. "And, Latin is truly the language of heaven!"
If you enjoy Latin, you may be glad to know that
this full-sized (8.5" x 11"), tradition-minded publication features an
assortment of activity types related to Latin (including: word searches,
crosswords, coloring activities, challenges, fill-ins, spelling bee,
quizzes, unscrambles, true/false, multiple choice, matching, cross-offs,
circling, word associations, translation exercises, and more...), and
treats of various topics (including: common Latin words, Latin language
facts, Latin grammar, nouns & verbs, abbreviations,
phrases / sayings / mottos, prefixes, cardinal numbers, grammatical gender,
inflection, word roots, diacritics / accenting, pronunciation, Latin
prayers / hymns, Scripture verses, Catholic phrases, and more...).
