Most commonly associated with
the sayings of Jesus at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount, the
word "beatitude" is derived from the Latin word 'beatus'
(meaning 'blessed'). "[These] Beatitudes of Jesus are at the very heart of
Jesus' teachings and show us the way of Christian life as well as the
rewards of living that life. They help to
sustain hope of those undergoing tribulations by promising great rewards
to Jesus' faithful followers. They may also remind us that our ultimate
happiness may rise up from what we see as our crosses. In contrast to
what the world teaches us, our Lord Jesus teaches us that the path to Heaven is not made up
of riches or other comforts, but instead in a spirit of poverty,
self-sacrifice, and meekness." Clearly, the Beatitudes are
instrumental in helping us
make good life choices in keeping with our ultimate goal of partaking in
eternal life with our blessed Lord Jesus. Faithful Catholics should
memorize the Beatitudes and consider them often.
Note: For assistance
with the beatitudes, consult appropriate, competent Church authorities.
As indicated above, the term
"Beatitudes" is usually associated with the sayings of Jesus
at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. However, there are a number
of other biblical "beatitudes" (or "blessings"). The
following lists (1) Jesus' Beatitudes (traditionally worded, traditional
& modern Scripture translations), and (2) Various other Biblical
"beatitudes" (or blessings).
"...since
it is you, O LORD, who blessed it, it is blessed forever." (1 Chron.

Blessed
are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[Note:
According to the DR translation, "poor in spirit" refers to
"the humble; and they whose spirit is not set upon riches."]
Blessed
are the meek: for they shall possess the land.
Blessed
are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed
are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their
fill.
Blessed
are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed
are the clean of heart: they shall see God.
Blessed
are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed
are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake: for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
Blessed
are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that
is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: Be glad and rejoice for your
reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that
were before you.
Lk.
6:20-23
Blessed
are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed
are ye that hunger now: for you shall be filled.
Blessed
are ye that weep now: for you shall laugh.
Blessed
shall you be when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you
and shall reproach you and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of
man's sake.
Be
glad in that day and rejoice: for behold, your reward is great in
heaven, For according to these things did their fathers to the prophets.
Note:
Jesus concludes these beatitudes with the following woes: "But woe
to you that are rich: for you have your consolation. Woe to you that are
filled: for you shall hunger. Woe to you that now laugh: for you shall
mourn and weep. Woe to you when men shall bless you: for according to
these things did their fathers to the false prophets." (Lk.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Lk.
6:20-23
Blessed
are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed
are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied.

Rejoice
and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in
heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.
