Association
With Others

Walk with wise men and you will become wise, but the companion
of fools will fare badly. [PROV 13:20]
Face a bear robbed of her cubs, but never a fool in his folly!
[PROV 17:12]
Be not friendly with a hotheaded man, nor the companion of a
wrathful man, Lest you learn his ways, and get yourself into a
snare. [PROV 22:24-25]
When you sit down to dine with a ruler, keep in mind who is
before you [PROV 23:1]
Let your acquaintances be many, but one in a thousand your
confidant. [SIRACH 6:6]
Frequent the company of the elders; whoever is wise, stay close
to him. [SIRACH 6:34]
If you see a man of prudence, seek him out; let your feet wear
away his doorstep! [SIRACH 6:36]
Travel not with a ruthless man, lest he weigh you down with
calamity; For he will go his own way straight, and through his
folly you will perish with him. [SIRACH 8:15]
With the learned be intimate; let all your conversation be
about the law of the LORD. [SIRACH 9:15]
Have just men for your table companions; in the fear of God be
your glory. [SIRACH 9:16]
Bring not every man into your house, for many are the snares of
the crafty one [SIRACH 11:29]
Avoid a wicked man, for he breeds only evil, lest you incur a
lasting stain. [SIRACH 11:33]
He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with
an impious man learns his ways. [SIRACH 13:1]
Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of
violence. [SIRACH 13:13]
Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like
himself. Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind
every man associates. Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is
with the sinner and the just. [SIRACH 13:14-16]
Speak but seldom with the stupid man, be not the companion of a
brute; Beware of him lest you have trouble and be spattered when
he shakes himself; Turn away from him and you will find rest and
not be wearied by his lack of sense. Sand and salt and an iron
mass are easier to bear than a stupid man. [SIRACH 22:12-13, 15]
Limit the time you spend among fools, but frequent the company
of thoughtful men. [SIRACH 27:12]
Seek no advice from one who regards you with hostility; from
those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden. [SIRACH 37:10]
Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about
war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a
miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man
about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle
slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they
give. Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure
keeps the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will
feel for you if you fall. Then, too, heed your own heart's
counsel; for what have you that you can depend on more? A man's
conscience can tell him his situation better than seven watchmen
in a lofty tower. Most important of all, pray to God to set your
feet in the path of truth. [SIRACH 37:11-15]

Death / Shortness of Life
|
He shall rely upon his family, but it shall not last; he shall
cling to it, but it shall not endure. [JOB 8:15]
And I detested all the fruits of my labor under the sun,
because I must leave them to a man who is to come after me. And
who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will
have control over all the fruits of my wise labor under the sun.
This also is vanity. [ECCL 2:18-19]
As he came forth from his mother's womb, so again shall he
depart, naked as he came, having nothing from his labor that he
can carry in his hand. [ECCL 5:14]
For there is a time and a judgment for everything. Yet
it is a great affliction for man that he is ignorant of what is to
come; for who will make known to him how it will be? There is no
man who is master of the breath of life so as to retain it, and
none has mastery of the day of death. There is no exemption from
the struggle, nor are the wicked saved by their wickedness. [ECCL
8:6-8]
Court not death by your erring way of life, nor draw to
yourselves destruction by the works of your hands. Because God did
not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the
living. It was the wicked who with hands and words invited death,
considered it a friend, and pined for it, and made a covenant with
it, Because they deserve to be in its possession [WISDOM 1:12-13,
16]
You have given my days a very short span; my life is as nothing
before you. All mortals are but a breath. [PS 39:6]
And now, Lord, what future do I have? You are my only hope. [PS
39:8]
Put no trust in princes, in mere mortals powerless to save.
When they breathe their last, they return to the earth; that day
all their planning comes to nothing. [PS 146:3-4]
In whatever you do, remember your last days, and you will never
sin. [SIRACH 7:36]
Rejoice not when a man dies; remember, we are all to die. [SIRACH
8:7]
Remember your last days, set enmity aside; remember death and
decay, and cease from sin! [SIRACH 28:6]
For grief can bring on an extremity and heartache destroy one's
health. Turn not your thoughts to him again; cease to recall him;
think rather of the end. Recall him not, for there is no hope of
his return; it will not help him, but will do you harm. Remember
that his fate will also be yours; for him it was yesterday, for
you today. [SIRACH 38:19-22] [Note: "Recall him not"
does not preclude prayers for the dead, as indicated in 2 Macc.

Evil / Turning
From Evil
|
Be not provoked with evildoers, nor envious of the wicked; For
the evil man has no future, the lamp of the wicked will be put
out. [PROV 24:19-20]
Happy the man who is always on his guard; but he who hardens
his heart will fall into evil. [PROV 28:14]
For the worship of infamous idols is the reason and source and
extremity of all evil. [WISDOM 14:27]
Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. [PS
34:15]
Turn from evil and do good, that you may inhabit the land
forever. [PS 37:27]
Do no evil, and evil will not overtake you [SIRACH 7:1]
Be guilty of no evil before the city's populace, nor disgrace
yourself before the assembly. [SIRACH 7:7]
He who gloats over evil will meet with evil, and he who repeats
an evil report has no sense. [SIRACH 19:5]

Note: The reader is reminded that
discipline of children should obviously be done within reason. One
must not abuse children.
|
He who upsets his household has empty air for a heritage; and
the fool will become slave to the wise man. [PROV 11:29]
A worthy wife is the crown of her husband, but a disgraceful
one is like rot in his bones. [PROV 12:4]
A wise son loves correction, but the senseless one heeds no
rebuke. [PROV 13:1]
He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him takes
care to chastise him. [PROV 13:24]
The fool spurns his father's admonition, but prudent is he who
heeds reproof. [PROV 15:5]
Train a boy in the way he should go; even when he is old, he
will not swerve from it. [PROV 22:6]
Withhold not chastisement from a boy; if you beat him with the
rod, he will not die. Beat him with the rod, and you will save him
from the nether world. [PROV 23:13-14]
The rod of correction gives wisdom, but a boy left to his whims
disgraces his mother. [PROV 29:15]
Correct your son, and he will bring you comfort, and give
delight to your soul. [PROV 29:17]
He who honors his father atones for sins [SIRACH 3:3]
He stores up riches who reveres his mother. [SIRACH 3:4]
My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not
as long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate with
him; revile him not in the fullness of your strength. For kindness
to a father will not be forgotten, it will serve as a sin offering
- it will take lasting root. In time of tribulation it
will be recalled to your advantage, like warmth upon frost it will
melt away your sins. [SIRACH 3:12-15]
A blasphemer is he who despises his father; accursed of his
Creator, he who angers his mother. [SIRACH 3:16]
If you have sons, chastise them; bend their necks from
childhood. [SIRACH 7:23]
If you have daughters, keep them chaste, and be not indulgent
to them. [SIRACH 7:24]
Giving your daughter in marriage ends a great task; but give
her to a worthy man. [SIRACH 7:25]
With your whole heart honor your father; your mother's
birthpangs forget not. Remember, of these parents you were born;
what can you give them for all they gave you? [SIRACH 7:27-28]
Desire not a brood of worthless children, nor rejoice in wicked
offspring. Many though they be, exult not in them if they have not
the fear of the LORD. Count not on their length of life, have no
hope in their future. For one can be better than a thousand;
rather die childless than have godless children! [SIRACH 16:1-3]
An unruly child is a disgrace to its father; if it be a
daughter she brings him to poverty. [SIRACH 22:3]
A thoughtful daughter becomes a treasure to her husband, a
shameless one is her father's grief. [SIRACH 22:4]
Happy the husband of a good wife, twice-lengthened are his
days; A worthy wife brings joy to her husband, peaceful and full
is his life. A good wife is a generous gift bestowed upon him who
fears the LORD [SIRACH 26:1-3]
Choicest of blessings is a modest wife, priceless her chaste
person. Like the sun rising in the LORD'S heavens, the beauty of a
virtuous wife is the radiance of her home. [SIRACH 26:15-6]
He who loves his son chastises him often, that he may be his
joy when he grows up. [SIRACH 30:1]
He who spoils his son will have wounds to bandage, and will
quake inwardly at every outcry. A colt untamed turns out stubborn;
a son left to himself grows up unruly. Pamper your child and he
will be a terror for you, indulge him and he will bring you grief.
Share not in his frivolity lest you share in his sorrow, when
finally your teeth are clenched in remorse. Give him not his own
way in his youth, and close not your eyes to his follies. Bend him
to the yoke when he is young, thrash his sides while he is still
small, Lest he become stubborn, disobey you, and leave you
disconsolate. Discipline your son, make heavy his yoke, lest his
folly humiliate you. [SIRACH 30:7-13]
A wife is her husband's richest treasure, a helpmate, a
steadying column. A vineyard with no hedge will be overrun; a man
with no wife becomes a homeless wanderer. [SIRACH 36:24-25]
Let (your daughter) not parade her charms before men, or spend
her time with married women; Better a man's harshness than a
woman's indulgence, and a frightened daughter than any disgrace. [SIRACH
42:12, 14]

Friends & Enemies
|
Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles, let
not your heart exult, Lest the LORD see it, be displeased with
you, and withdraw his wrath from your enemy. [PROV 24:17-18]
When you gain a friend, first test him, and be not too ready to
trust him For one sort of friend is a friend when it suits him,
but he will not be with you in time of distress. Another is a
friend who becomes an enemy, and tells of the quarrel to your
shame. Another is a friend, a boon companion, who will not be with
you when sorrow comes. When things go well, he is your other self,
and lords it over your servants; But if you are brought low, he
turns against you and avoids meeting you. [SIRACH 6:7-12]
Keep away from your enemies; be on your guard with your
friends. [SIRACH 6:13]
A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a
treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance
his worth. A faithful friend is a life-saving remedy, such as he
who fears God finds; For he who fears God behaves accordingly, and
his friend will be like himself. [SIRACH 6:14-17]
Discard not an old friend, for the new one cannot equal him. A
new friend is like new wine which you drink with pleasure only
when it has aged. [SIRACH 9:10]
In our prosperity we cannot know our friends; in adversity an
enemy will not remain concealed. When a man is successful even his
enemy is friendly; in adversity even his friend disappears. [SIRACH
12:8-9]
Never trust your enemy, for his wickedness is like corrosion in
bronze. Even though he acts humbly and peaceably toward you, take
care to be on your guard against him. Rub him as one polishes a
brazen mirror, and you will find that there is still corrosion.
Who pities a snake charmer when he is bitten, or anyone who goes
near a wild beast? [SIRACH 12:10-11, 13]
Should you speak sharply to a friend, fear not, you can be
reconciled. But a contemptuous insult, a confidence broken, or a
treacherous attack will drive away any friend. [SIRACH 22:22]
Happy is he who finds a friend and he who speaks to attentive
ears. [SIRACH 25:9]
He who betrays a secret cannot be trusted, he will never find
an intimate friend. Cherish your friend, keep faith with him; but
if you betray his confidence, follow him not; For as an enemy
might kill a man, you have killed your neighbor's friendship. A
wound can be bound up, and an insult forgiven, but he who betrays
secrets does hopeless damage. [SIRACH 27:16-18, 21]
Every friend declares his friendship, but there are friends who
are friends in name only. A false friend will share your joys, but
in time of trouble he stands afar off. A true friend will fight
with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your
shield-bearer. [SIRACH 37:1, 4-5]

Generosity &
Almsgiving
|
Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim when it is in
your power to do it for him. [PROV 3:27]
Say not to your neighbor, "Go, and come again, tomorrow I
will give," when you can give at once. [PROV 3:28]
He who confers benefits will be amply enriched, and he who
refreshes others will himself be refreshed. [PROV 11:25]
He sins who despises the hungry; but happy is he who is kind to
the poor! [PROV 14:21]
He who gives to the poor suffers no want, but he who ignores
them gets many a curse. [PROV 28:27]
Let not your hand be open to receive and clenched when it is
time to give. [SIRACH 4:31]
To the poor man also extend your hand, that your blessing may
be complete [SIRACH 7:32]
Be generous to all the living, and withhold not your kindness
from the dead. [SIRACH 7:33]
To whom will he be generous who is stingy with himself and does
not enjoy what is his own? None is more stingy than he who is
stingy with himself; he punishes his own miserliness. If ever he
is generous, it is by mistake; and in the end he displays his
greed. In the miser's opinion his share is too small; he refuses
his neighbor and brings ruin on himself. My son, use freely
whatever you have and enjoy it as best you can; Remember that
death does not tarry, nor have you been told the grave's appointed
time. Before you die, be good to your friend, and give him a share
in what you possess. [SIRACH 14:5-13]
To a poor man, however, be generous; keep him not waiting for
your alms [SIRACH 29:8]
Because of the precept, help the needy, and in their want, do
not send them away empty-handed. [SIRACH 29:9]
Spend your money for your brother and friend, and hide it not
under a stone to perish; Dispose of your treasure as the Most High
commands, for that will profit you more than the gold. Store up
almsgiving in your treasure house, and it will save you from every
evil; Better than a stout shield and a sturdy spear it will fight
for you against the foe. [SIRACH 29:10-13]
With each contribution show a cheerful countenance, and pay
your tithes in a spirit of joy. [SIRACH 35:8]
Give to the Most High as he has given to you, generously,
according to your means. For the LORD is one who always repays,
and he will give back to you sevenfold. [SIRACH 35:9-10]

God Saves / God Heals
|
Still, if you yourself have recourse to God and make
supplication to the Almighty, Should you be blameless and upright,
surely now he will awake for you and restore your rightful domain;
Your former state will be of little moment, for in time to come
you will flourish indeed. [JOB 8:5-7]
If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward
him, If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not
injustice dwell in your tent, Surely then you may lift up your
face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid. For then you
shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed
away. [JOB 11:13-16]
If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; if you put
iniquity far from your tent, And treat raw gold like dust, and the
fine gold of Ophir as pebbles from the brook, Then the Almighty
himself shall be your gold and your sparkling silver. For then you
shall delight in the Almighty and you shall lift up your face
toward God. You shall entreat him and he will hear you, and your
vows you shall fulfill. When you make a decision, it shall succeed
for you, and upon your ways the light shall shine. For he brings
down the pride of the haughty, but the man of humble mien he
saves. God delivers him who is innocent; you shall be delivered
through cleanness of hands. [JOB 22:23-30]
The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the just man runs to it
and is safe. [PROV 18:10]
Let us fall into the hands of the LORD and not into the hands
of men, For equal to his majesty is the mercy that he shows. [SIRACH
2:18]
My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will
heal you [SIRACH 38:9]
[top]
|
God's Care
|
For he wounds, but he binds up; he smites, but his hands give
healing. Out of six troubles he will deliver you, and at the
seventh no evil shall touch you. [JOB 5:18-19]
In famine he will deliver you from death, and in war from the
threat of the sword; From the scourge of the tongue you shall be
hidden, and shall not fear approaching ruin. [JOB 5:20-21]
For the LORD gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and
understanding; He has counsel in store for the upright, he is the
shield of those who walk honestly, Guarding the paths of justice,
protecting the way of his pious ones. [PROV 2:6-8]
In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight
your paths. [PROV 3:6]
When he is dealing with the arrogant, he is stern, but to the
humble he shows kindness. [PROV 3:34]
The LORD is far from the wicked, but the prayer of the just he
hears. [PROV 15:29]
In his mind a man plans his course, but the LORD directs his
steps. [PROV 16:9]
No one is disgraced who waits for you, but only those who
lightly break faith. [PS 25:3]
For divine anger lasts but a moment; divine favor lasts a
lifetime. At dusk weeping comes for the night; but at dawn there
is rejoicing. [PS 30:6]
But the LORD'S eyes are upon the reverent, upon those who hope
for his gracious help [PS 33:18]
Find your delight in the LORD who will give you your heart's
desire. [PS 37:4]
Those whose steps are guided by the LORD; whose way God
approves, May stumble, but they will never fall, for the LORD
holds their hand. [PS 37:23-24]
Though I am afflicted and poor, the Lord keeps me in mind. You
are my help and deliverer; my God, do not delay! [PS 40:18]
Cast your care upon the LORD, who will give you support. God
will never allow the righteous to stumble. [PS 55:23]
We will triumph with the help of God, who will trample down our
foes. [PS 60:14]
Happy those whom you guide, LORD, whom you teach by your
instruction. You give them rest from evil days, while a pit is
being dug for the wicked. [PS 94:12-13]
You, LORD, will not forsake your people, nor abandon your very
own. [PS 94:14]
As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has
compassion on the faithful. [PS 103:13]
Study the generations long past and understand; has anyone
hoped in the LORD and been disappointed? Has anyone persevered in
his fear and been forsaken? has anyone called upon him and been
rebuffed? Compassionate and merciful is the LORD; he forgives
sins, he saves in time of trouble. [SIRACH 2:10-11]
God's blessing is the lot of the just man, and in due time his
hopes bear fruit. [SIRACH 11:22]
The eyes of the LORD are upon those who love him; he is their
mighty shield and strong support, A shelter from the heat, a shade
from the noonday sun, a guard against stumbling, a help against
falling. [SIRACH 34:16]
He who serves God willingly is heard; his petition reaches the
heavens. The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not
rest till it reaches its goal, Nor will it withdraw till the Most
High responds, judges justly and affirms the right. [SIRACH
35:16-18]

God's
Likes & Dislikes
|
There are six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an
abomination to him; Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that
shed innocent blood; A heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that
run swiftly to evil, The false witness who utters lies, and he who
sows discord among brothers. [PROV 6:16-19]
The depraved in heart are an abomination to the LORD, but those
who walk blamelessly are his delight. [PROV 11:20]
The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but he
loves the man who pursues virtue. [PROV 15:9]
He who condones the wicked, he who condemns the just, are both
an abomination to the LORD. [PROV 17:15]
Love justice, you who judge the earth; think of the LORD in
goodness, and seek him in integrity of heart; Because he is found
by those who test him not, and he manifests himself to those who
do not disbelieve him. For perverse counsels separate a man from
God, and his power, put to the proof, rebukes the foolhardy;
Because into a soul that plots evil wisdom enters not, nor dwells
she in a body under debt of sin. [WISDOM 1:1-4]
The LORD loves those who hate evil, protects the lives of the
faithful, rescues them from the hand of the wicked. [PS 97:10]
God takes no delight in the strength of horses, no pleasure in
the runner's stride. Rather the LORD takes pleasure in the devout,
those who await his faithful care. [PS 147:10-11]
Odious to the LORD and to men is arrogance, and the sin of
oppression they both hate. [SIRACH 10:7]
The Most High himself hates sinners, and upon the wicked he
takes vengeance. [SIRACH 12:7]
A man's goodness God cherishes like a signet ring, a man's
virtue, like the apple of his eye. [SIRACH 17:17]
With three things I am delighted, for they are pleasing to the
LORD and to men: Harmony among brethren, friendship among
neighbors, and the mutual love of husband and wife. [SIRACH 25:1]

God's Supremacy
|
Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the
perfection of the Almighty? It is higher than the heavens; what
can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?
It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.
If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him
nay? For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will
he then ignore it? [JOB 11:7-11]
Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate
justice. Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set
all the land in its place? If he were to take back his spirit to
himself, withdraw to himself his breath, All flesh would perish
together, and man would return to the dust. [JOB 34:12-15]
I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours
can be hindered. [JOB 42:2]
The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the
evil and the good. [PROV 15:3]
Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the decision of
the LORD that endures. [PROV 19:21]
All the ways of a man may be right in his own eyes, but it is
the LORD who proves hearts. [PROV 21:2]
I recognized that man is unable to find out all God's work that
is done under the sun, even though neither by day nor by night do
his eyes find rest in sleep. However much man toils in searching,
he does not find it out; and even if the wise man says that he
knows, he is unable to find it out. [ECCL 8:17]
Just as you know not how the breath of life fashions the human
frame in the mother's womb, So you know not the work of God which
he is accomplishing in the universe. [ECCL 11:5]
For the spirit of the LORD fills the world, is all-embracing,
and knows what man says. [WISDOM 1:7]
Understand, you stupid people! You fools, when will you be
wise? Does the one who shaped the ear not hear? The one who formed
the eye not see? Does the one who guides nations not rebuke? The
one who teaches humans not have knowledge? The LORD does know
human plans; they are only puffs of air. [PS 94:8-11]
Through all generations your truth endures; fixed to stand firm
like the earth. [PS 119:90]
All wisdom comes from the LORD and with him it remains forever.
[SIRACH? 1:1]
The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the
LORD alone is just. [SIRACH 18:1]
The works of God are all of them good; in its own time every
need is supplied. At his word the waters become still as in a
flask; he had but to speak and the reservoirs were made. He has
but to command and his will is done; nothing can limit his
achievement. The works of all mankind are present to him; not a
thing escapes his eye. His gaze spans all the ages; to him there
is nothing unexpected. No cause then to say: "What is the
purpose of this?" Everything is chosen to satisfy a need. [SIRACH
39:16-21]

Honor, Praise & Love
|
Honor the LORD with your wealth, with first fruits of all your
produce; Then will your barns be filled with grain, with new wine
your vats will overflow. [PROV 3:9-10]
Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you just; exult, all you
upright of heart. [PS 32:11]
Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is the rock of my heart,
my portion forever. [PS 73:26]
Your decrees are my delight; they are my counselors. [PS
119:24]
This is my comfort in affliction, your promise that gives me
life. [PS 119:50]
Had your teaching not been my delight, I would have perished in
my affliction. [PS 119:92]
Through your precepts I gain insight; therefore I hate all
false ways. [PS 119:104]
You, LORD, are near to all who call upon you, to all who call
upon you in truth. [PS 145:18]
Let everything that has breath give praise to the LORD!
Hallelujah! [PS 150:6]
With all your strength, love your Creator, forsake not his
ministers. [SIRACH 7:30]
Above all, give praise to your Creator, who showers his favors
upon you. [SIRACH 32:13]
In generous spirit pay homage to the LORD, be not sparing of
freewill gifts. [SIRACH 35:7]
So now with full joy of heart proclaim and bless the name of
the Holy One. [SIRACH 39:35]
Let your spirits rejoice in the mercy of God, and be not
ashamed to give him praise. [SIRACH 51:29]

Instruction &
Discipline
|
The discipline of the LORD, my son, disdain not; spurn not his
reproof; For whom the LORD loves he reproves, and he chastises the
son he favors. [PROV 3:11-12]
A path to life is his who heeds admonition, but he who
disregards reproof goes astray. [PROV 10:17]
He who loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates
reproof is stupid. [PROV 12:1]
Poverty and shame befall the man who disregards correction, but
he who heeds reproof is honored. [PROV 13:18]
He who rejects admonition despises his own soul, but he who
heeds reproof gains understanding. [PROV 15:32]
Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may
eventually become wise. [PROV 19:20]
Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of
knowledge. [PROV 23:12]
He who rebukes a man gets more thanks in the end than one with
a flattering tongue. [PROV 28:23]
My son, from your youth embrace discipline; thus will you find
wisdom with graying hair. [SIRACH 6:18]
Reflect on the precepts of the LORD, let his commandments be
your constant meditation; Then he will enlighten your mind, and
the wisdom you desire he will grant. [SIRACH 6:37]
Spurn not the discourse of the wise, but acquaint yourself with
their proverbs; From them you will acquire the training to serve
in the presence of princes. [SIRACH 8:8]
He who hates correction walks the sinner's path, but he who
fears the LORD repents in his heart. [SIRACH 21:6]
Like a song in time of mourning is inopportune talk, but lashes
and discipline are at all times wisdom. [SIRACH 22:6]
He who would find God must accept discipline; he who seeks him
obtains his request. [SIRACH 32:14]

Judgment: God
Repays Good & Bad
|
Can the papyrus grow up without mire? Can the reed grass
flourish without water? While it is yet green and uncut, it
withers quicker than any grass. So is the end of everyone who
forgets God, and so shall the hope of the godless man perish. [JOB
8:11-13]
This is the fate of everyone greedy of loot: unlawful gain
takes away the life of him who acquires it. [PROV 1:19]
Truly the evil man shall not go unpunished, but those who are
just shall escape. [PROV 11:21]
The desire of the just ends only in good; the expectation of
the wicked is wrath. [PROV 11:23]
Severe punishment is in store for the man who goes astray; he
who hates reproof will die. [PROV 15:10]
The false witness will not go unpunished, and he who utters
lies will not escape. [PROV 19:5]
The last word, when all is heard: Fear God and keep his
commandments, for this is man's all; because God will bring to
judgment every work, with all its hidden qualities, whether good
or bad. [ECCL 12:13-14]
But the wicked shall receive a punishment to match their
thoughts, since they neglected justice and forsook the LORD.
[WISDOM 3:10]
Those who do evil will be cut off, but those who wait for the
LORD will possess the land. Wait a little, and the wicked will be
no more; look for them and they will not be there. But the poor
will possess the land, will delight in great prosperity. [PS
37:9-11]
The wicked perish, the enemies of the LORD; Like the beauty of
meadows they vanish; like smoke they disappear. [PS 37:20]
One thing God has said; two things I have heard: Power belongs
to God; so too, Lord, does kindness, And you render to each of us
according to our deeds. [PS 62:12-13]
But those who are far from you perish; you destroy those
unfaithful to you. [PS 73:27]
Those who sow in tears will reap with cries of joy. [PS 126:5]
The roots of the proud God plucks up, to plant the humble in
their place [SIRACH 10:15]
The traces of the proud God sweeps away and effaces the memory
of them from the earth. [SIRACH 10:17]
Great as his mercy is his punishment; he judges men, each
according to his deeds. [SIRACH 16:12]
Whoever does good has his reward, which each receives according
to his deeds. [SIRACH 16:14]
Later he will rise up and repay them, and requite each one of
them as they deserve. But to the penitent he provides a way back,
he encourages those who are losing hope! Return to the LORD and
give up sin, pray to him and make your offenses few. Turn again to
the Most High and away from sin, hate intensely what he loathes;
How great the mercy of the LORD, his forgiveness of those who
return to him! [SIRACH 17:18-21, 24]
Mockery and abuse will be the lot of the proud, and vengeance
lies in wait for them like a lion. [SIRACH 27:28]
The vengeful will suffer the LORD'S vengeance, for he remembers
their sins in detail. [SIRACH 28:1]
Work at your tasks in due season, and in his own time God will
give you your reward. [SIRACH 51:30]

Keeping / Loving the Law
|
He who despises the word must pay for it, but he who reveres
the commandment will be rewarded. [PROV 13:13]
Those who abandon the law praise the wicked man, but those who
keep the law war against him. [PROV 28:4]
When one turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his
prayer is an abomination. [PROV 28:9]
Happy those whose way is blameless, who walk by the teaching of
the LORD. [PS 119:1]
Happy those who observe God's decrees, who seek the LORD with
all their heart. [PS 119:2]
He who keeps the law controls his impulses; he who is perfect
in fear of the LORD has wisdom. [SIRACH 21:11]
Be not too sure even of smooth roads, be careful on all your
paths. Whatever you do, be on your guard, for in this way you will
keep the commandments. [SIRACH 32:21-23]
He who keeps the law preserves himself; and he who trusts in
the LORD shall not be put to shame. [SIRACH 32:24]
He who hates the law is without wisdom, and is tossed about
like a boat in a storm. [SIRACH 33:2]
The prudent man trusts in the word of the LORD, and the law is
dependable for him as a divine oracle. [SIRACH 33:3]

Rich & Poor
|
Better a lowly man who supports himself than one of assumed
importance who lacks bread. [PROV 12:9]
Better a poor man who walks in his integrity than he who is
crooked in his ways and rich. [PROV 19:1]
Rich and poor have a common bond: the LORD is the maker of them
all. [PROV 22:2]
Better a poor man who walks in his integrity than he who is
crooked in his ways and rich. [PROV 28:6]
The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but a poor man who is
intelligent sees through him. [PROV 28:11]
The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is
wronged and begs forgiveness. [SIRACH 13:3]
As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but
when you are exhausted, he will abandon you. As long as you have
anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will
win your confidence; When he needs something from you he will
cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you. [SIRACH
13:4-6]

Righteous & Wicked
|
Do you not know this from olden time, since man was placed upon
the earth, That the triumph of the wicked is short and the joy of
the impious but for a moment? [JOB 20:4-5]
For the upright will dwell in the land, the honest will remain
in it; But the wicked will be cut off from the land, the faithless
will be rooted out of it. [PROV 2:21-22]
To the LORD the perverse man is an abomination, but with the
upright is his friendship. [PROV 3:32]
The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but the
dwelling of the just he blesses [PROV 3:33]
Therefore no one who utters wicked things can go unnoticed, nor
will chastising condemnation pass him by. For the devices of the
wicked man shall be scrutinized, and the sound of his words shall
reach the LORD, for the chastisement of his transgressions
[WISDOM 1:8-9]
Avoid wickedness, and it will turn aside from you. [SIRACH 7:2]

Sinners, Sin &
Repentance
|
Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his garments not burned?
Or can a man walk on live coals, and his feet not be scorched? [PROV
6:27-28]
He who conceals his sins prospers not, but he who confesses and
forsakes them obtains mercy. [PROV 28:13]
Say not: "I have sinned, yet what has befallen me?"
for the LORD bides his time. [SIRACH 5:4]
Of forgiveness be not overconfident, adding sin upon sin. Say
not: "Great is his mercy; my many sins he will forgive."
[SIRACH 5:5-6]
Do not plot to repeat a sin; not even for one will you go
unpunished. [SIRACH 7:8]
Envy not a sinner's fame, for you know not what disaster awaits
him. [SIRACH 9:11]
Unseemly is praise on a sinner's lips, for it is not accorded
to him by God. But praise is offered by the wise man's tongue; its
rightful steward will proclaim it. [SIRACH 15:9-10]
Say not: "It was God's doing that I fell away"; for
what he hates he does not do. Say not: "It was he who set me
astray"; for he has no need of wicked man. Abominable
wickedness the LORD hates, he does not let it befall those who
fear him. When God, in the beginning, created man, he made him
subject to his own free choice. If you choose you can keep the
commandments; it is loyalty to do his will. There are set before
you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your
hand. Before man are life and death, whichever he chooses shall be
given him. Immense is the wisdom of the LORD; he is mighty in
power, and all-seeing. The eyes of God see all he has made; he
understands man's every deed. No man does he command to sin, to
none does he give strength for lies. [SIRACH 15:11-20]
Say not: "I am hidden from God; in heaven who remembers
me? Among so many people I cannot be known; what am I in the world
of spirits? Behold, the heavens, the heaven of heavens, the earth
and the abyss tremble at his visitation; The roots of the
mountains, the earth's foundations, at his mere glance, quiver and
quake. Of me, therefore, he will take no thought; with my ways who
will concern himself? If I sin, no eye will see me; if all in
secret I am disloyal, who is to know? Who tells him of just deeds
and what could I expect for doing my duty?" Such are the
thoughts of senseless men, which only the foolish knave will
think. [SIRACH 16:15-21]
Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned,
show repentance. [SIRACH 18:20]
Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in
distress. [SIRACH 18:21]
My son, if you have sinned, do so no more, and for your past
sins pray to be forgiven. [SIRACH 21:1]
Flee from sin as from a serpent that will bite you if you go
near it; Its teeth are lion's teeth, destroying the souls of men.
[SIRACH 21:2]
The path of sinners is smooth stones that end in the depths of
the nether world. [SIRACH 21:10]
And the man who dishonors his marriage bed and says to himself
"Who can see me? Darkness surrounds me, walls hide me; no one
sees me; why should I fear to sin?" Of the Most High he is
not mindful, fearing only the eyes of men; He does not understand
that the eyes of the LORD, ten thousand times brighter than the
sun, Observe every step a man takes and peer into hidden corners.
[SIRACH 23:18-19]
For the sake of profit many sin, and the struggle for wealth
blinds the eyes. [SIRACH 27:1]
Avoid strife and your sins will be fewer, for a quarrelsome man
kindles disputes, commits the sin of disrupting friendship and
sows discord among those at peace. The more wood, the greater the
fire, the more underlying it, the fiercer the fight; The greater a
man's strength, the sterner his anger, the greater his power, the
greater his wrath. If you blow upon a spark, it quickens into
flame, if you spit on it, it dies out; yet both you do with your
mouth! [SIRACH 28:8-10, 12]
The sinner turns aside reproof and distorts the law to suit his
purpose. [SIRACH 32:17]

Speaking / Talking
|
Put away from you dishonest talk, deceitful speech put far from
you. [PROV 4:24]
Where words are many, sin is not wanting; but he who restrains
his lips does well. [PROV 10:19]
He who reviles his neighbor has no sense, but the intelligent
man keeps silent. [PROV 11:12]
Truthful lips endure forever, the lying tongue, for only a
moment. [PROV 12:19]
Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who are
truthful are his delight. [PROV 12:22]
He who guards his mouth protects his life; to open wide one's
lips brings downfall. [PROV 13:3]
A mild answer calms wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. [PROV
15:1]
A soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse one crushes
the spirit. [PROV 15:4]
Even a fool, if he keeps silent, is considered wise; if he
closes his lips, intelligent. [PROV 17:28]
The fool takes no delight in understanding, but rather in
displaying what he thinks. [PROV 18:2]
He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from
trouble. [PROV 21:23]
Speak not for the fool's hearing; he will despise the wisdom of
your words. [PROV 23:9]
By patience is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue will break
a bone. [PROV 25:15]
The lying tongue is its owner's enemy, and the flattering mouth
works ruin. [PROV 26:28]
Open your mouth, decree what is just, defend the needy and the
poor! [PROV 31:9]
Keep your tongue from evil, your lips from speaking lies. [PS
34:14]
Refrain not from speaking at the proper time, and hide not away
your wisdom; For it is through speech that wisdom becomes known,
and knowledge through the tongue's rejoinder. [SIRACH 4:23-24]
Be swift to hear, but slow to answer. [SIRACH 5:13]
If you have the knowledge, answer your neighbor; if not, put
your hand over your mouth. [SIRACH 5:14]
Honor and dishonor through talking! A man's tongue can be his
downfall. [SIRACH 5:15]
Be not called a detractor; use not your tongue for calumny [SIRACH
5:16]
Say nothing harmful, small or great; be not a foe instead of a
friend; A bad name and disgrace will you acquire: "That for
the evil man with double tongue!" [SIRACH 6:1]
A kind mouth multiplies friends, and gracious lips prompt
friendly greetings. [SIRACH 6:5]
Feared in the city is the man of railing speech, and he who
talks rashly is hated. [SIRACH 9:18]
Before hearing, answer not, and interrupt no one in the middle
of his speech. [SIRACH 11:8]
Dispute not about what is not your concern; in the strife of
the arrogant take no part. [SIRACH 11:9]
Happy the man whose mouth brings him no grief, who is not stung
by remorse for sin. [SIRACH 14:1]
Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.
[SIRACH 18:18]
Never repeat gossip, and you will not be reviled. Tell nothing
to friend or foe; if you have a fault, reveal it not, For he who
hears it will hold it against you, and in time become your enemy.
Let anything you hear die within you; be assured it will not make
you burst. [SIRACH 19:6-9]
Then, too, a man can slip and not mean it; who has not sinned
with his tongue? [SIRACH 19:15]
An admonition can be inopportune, and a man may be wise to hold
his peace. [SIRACH 20:1]
A wise man is silent till the right time comes, but a boasting
fool ignores the proper time. [SIRACH 20:6]
He who talks too much is detested; he who pretends to authority
is hated. [SIRACH 20:7]
A fall to the ground is less sudden than a slip of the tongue;
that is why the downfall of the wicked comes so quickly. [SIRACH
20:17]
The lips of the impious talk of what is not their concern, but
the words of the prudent are carefully weighed. [SIRACH 21:25]
Fools' thoughts are in their mouths, wise men's words are in
their hearts. [SIRACH 21:26]
A slanderer besmirches himself, and is hated by his neighbors.
[SIRACH 21:28]
Let not your mouth form the habit of swearing, or becoming too
familiar with the Holy Name. Just as a slave that is constantly
under scrutiny will not be without welts, So one who swears
continually by the Holy Name will not remain free from sin. [SIRACH
23:9-10]
Let not your mouth become used to coarse talk, for in it lies
sinful matter. [SIRACH 23:13]
When a sieve is shaken, the husks appear; so do a man's faults
when he speaks. [SIRACH 27:4]
The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had; so too does a
man's speech disclose the bent of his mind. [SIRACH 27:6]
Praise no man before he speaks, for it is then that men are
tested. [SIRACH 27:7]
Cursed be gossips and the double-tongued, for they destroy the
peace of many. [SIRACH 28:13]
A meddlesome tongue subverts many, and makes them refugees
among the peoples; It destroys walled cities, and overthrows
powerful dynasties. [SIRACH 28:14]
Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not as many as
by the tongue. [SIRACH 28:18]
Take care not to slip by your tongue and fall victim to your
foe waiting in ambush. [SIRACH 28:26]
Prepare your words and you will be listened to; draw upon your
training, and then give your answer. [SIRACH 33:4]

Treatment of Others
|
Plot no evil against your neighbor, against him who lives at
peace with you. [PROV 3:29]
Quarrel not with a man without cause, with one who has done you
no harm. [PROV 3:30]
Reprove not an arrogant man, lest he hate you; reprove a wise
man, and he will love you. [PROV 9:8]
Instruct a wise man, and he becomes still wiser; teach a just
man, and he advances in learning. [PROV 9:9]
He who winks at a fault causes trouble, but he who frankly
reproves promotes peace. [PROV 10:10]
He who oppresses the poor blasphemes his Maker, but he who is
kind to the needy glorifies him. [PROV 14:31]
He who mocks the poor blasphemes his Maker; he who is glad at
calamity will not go unpunished. [PROV 17:5]
He who has compassion on the poor lends to the LORD, and he
will repay him for his good deed. [PROV 19:17]
He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor will himself also
call and not be heard. [PROV 21:13]
Rescue those who are being dragged to death, and from those
tottering to execution withdraw not. [PROV 24:11]
My son, rob not the poor man of his livelihood; force not the
eyes of the needy to turn away. [SIRACH 4:1]
Do not exasperate the downtrodden; delay not to give to the
needy. [SIRACH 4:3]
A beggar in distress do not reject; avert not your face from
the poor. From the needy turn not your eyes, give no man reason to
curse you; For if in the bitterness of his soul he curse you, his
Creator will hear his prayer. [SIRACH 4:4-6]
Endear yourself to the assembly; before a ruler bow your head.
[SIRACH 4:7]
Give a hearing to the poor man, and return his greeting with
courtesy [SIRACH 4:8]
To the fatherless be as a father, and help their mother as a
husband would; Thus will you be like a son to the Most High, and
he will be more tender to you than a mother. [SIRACH 4:10]
Laugh not at an embittered man; be mindful of him who exalts
and humbles. [SIRACH 7:11]
Plot no mischief against your brother, nor against your friend
and companion. [SIRACH 7:12]
Avoid not those who weep, but mourn with those who mourn [SIRACH
7:34]
Neglect not to visit the sick - for these things you will be
loved. [SIRACH 7:35]
Quarrel not with a rich man, lest he pay out the price of your
downfall; For gold has dazzled many, and perverts the character of
princes. [SIRACH 8:2]
Dispute not with a man of railing speech, heap no wood upon his
fire. [SIRACH 8:3]
Shame not a repentant sinner; remember, we all are guilty. [SIRACH
8:5]
Insult no man when he is old, for some of us, too, will grow
old. [SIRACH 8:6]
No matter the wrong, do no violence to your neighbor, and do
not walk the path of arrogance. [SIRACH 10:6]
It is not just to despise a man who is wise but poor, nor
proper to honor any sinner. [SIRACH 10:22]
Praise not a man for his looks; despise not a man for his
appearance. [SIRACH 11:2]
Mock not the worn cloak and jibe at no man's bitter day: For
strange are the works of the LORD, hidden from men his deeds. The
oppressed often rise to a throne, and some that none would
consider wear a crown. The exalted often fall into utter disgrace;
the honored are given into enemy hands. [SIRACH 11:4-6]
No good comes to him who gives comfort to the wicked, nor is it
an act of mercy that he does. [SIRACH 12:3]
Give to the good man, refuse the sinner; refresh the
downtrodden, give nothing to the proud man. [SIRACH 12:4]
When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he
will urge you all the more. Be not bold with him lest you be
rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten. Engage
not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For
by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will
probe you. Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and
will not refrain from injury or chains. [SIRACH 13:9-12]
My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by
harsh words. Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word
improve a gift. Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both
are offered by a kindly man. [SIRACH 18:14-16]
Make fast friends with a man while he is poor; thus will you
enjoy his prosperity with him. In time of trouble remain true to
him, so as to share in his inheritance when it comes. [SIRACH
22:23]
Forgive your neighbor's injustice; then when you pray, your own
sins will be forgiven. Should a man nourish anger against his
fellows and expect healing from the LORD? Should a man refuse
mercy to his fellows, yet seek pardon for his own sins? If he who
is but flesh cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins? [SIRACH
28:2-5]
Recognize that your neighbor feels as you do, and keep in mind
your own dislikes: Toward what he eyes, do not put out a hand; nor
reach when he does for the same dish. [SIRACH 31:14-15]
Rebuke not your neighbor when wine is served, nor put him to
shame while he is merry; Use no harsh words with him and distress
him not in the presence of others. [SIRACH 31:31]
When among your elders be not forward, and with officials be
not too insistent. [SIRACH 32:9]
Forget not your comrade during the battle, and neglect him not
when you distribute your spoils. [SIRACH 37:6]
Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and
God it was who established his profession. [SIRACH 38:1]

Trust the Lord

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence
rely not [PROV 3:5]
Entrust your works to the LORD, and your plans will succeed. [PROV
16:3]
He who plans a thing will be successful; happy is he who trusts
in the LORD! [PROV 16:20]
Say not, "I will repay evil!" Trust in the LORD and
he will help you. [PROV 20:22]
Wait for the LORD, take courage; be stouthearted, wait for the
LORD! [PS 27:14]
Trust in the LORD and do good that you may dwell in the land
and live secure. [PS 7:3]
Commit your way to the LORD; trust that God will act [PS 37:5]
Happy those whose trust is the LORD, who turn not to idolatry
or to those who stray after falsehood. [PS 40:5]
Trust God and he will help you; make straight your ways and
hope in him. [SIRACH 2:6]
You who fear the LORD, trust him, and your reward will not be
lost. [SIRACH 2:8]
Woe to the faint of heart who trust not, who therefore will
have no shelter! [SIRACH 2:13]
Admire not how sinners live, but trust in the LORD and wait for
his light; For it is easy with the LORD suddenly, in an instant,
to make a poor man rich. [SIRACH 11:21]

Virtue
& Vice
|
Let not kindness and fidelity leave you; bind them around your
neck; Then will you win favor and good esteem before God and man.
[PROV 3:3-4]
Honor is the possession of wise men, but fools inherit shame. [PROV
3:35]
Ill-gotten treasures profit nothing, but virtue saves from
death. [PROV 10:2]
When pride comes, disgrace comes; but with the humble is
wisdom. [PROV 11:2]
Wealth is useless on the day of wrath, but virtue saves from
death. [PROV 11:4]
Virtue directs toward life, but he who pursues evil does so to
his death. [PROV 11:19]
The quick-tempered man makes a fool of himself, but the prudent
man is at peace. [PROV 14:17]
Every proud man is an abomination to the LORD; I assure you
that he will not go unpunished. [PROV 16:5]
By kindness and piety guilt is expiated, and by the fear of the
LORD man avoids evil. [PROV 16:6]
Better a little with virtue, than a large income with
injustice. [PROV 16:8]
It is good sense in a man to be slow to anger, and it is his
glory to overlook an offense. [PROV 19:11]
When a man walks in integrity and justice, happy are his
children after him! [PROV 20:7]
Man's pride causes his humiliation, but he who is humble of
spirit obtains honor. [PROV 29:23]
Or if one loves justice, the fruits of her works are virtues;
For she teaches moderation and prudence, justice and fortitude,
and nothing in life is more useful for men than these. [WISDOM
8:7]
Give up your anger, abandon your wrath; do not be provoked; it
brings only harm. [PS 37:8]
One cannot justify unjust anger; anger plunges a man to his
downfall. [SIRACH 1:19]
My son, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be
loved more than a giver of gifts. [SIRACH 3:17]
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will
find favor with God. [SIRACH 3:18]
A stubborn man will fare badly in the end, and he who loves
danger will perish in it. [SIRACH 3:25]
More and more, humble your pride; what awaits man is worms. [SIRACH
7:17]
For pride is the reservoir of sin, a source which runs over
with vice; Because of it God sends unheard-of afflictions and
brings men to utter ruin. [SIRACH 10:13]
Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack
sense. [SIRACH 13:8]
Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them
tight. [SIRACH 27:30]
Like the lightning that flashes before a storm is the esteem
that shines on modesty. [SIRACH 32:10]

Wisdom & Fear of
the Lord
|
The beginning of wisdom is fear of the LORD, which is formed
with the faithful in the womb. [SIRACH 1:12]
Fullness of wisdom is fear of the LORD; she inebriates men with
her fruits. [SIRACH 1:14]
The root of wisdom is fear of the LORD; her branches are length
of days. [SIRACH 1:18]
Among wisdom's treasures is the paragon of prudence; but fear
of the LORD is an abomination to the sinner. [SIRACH 1:22]
If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the LORD will
bestow her upon you [SIRACH 1:23]
You who fear the LORD, wait for his mercy, turn not away lest
you fall. [SIRACH 2:7]
You who fear the LORD, hope for good things, for lasting joy
and mercy. [SIRACH 2:9]
Those who fear the LORD disobey not his words; those who love
him keep his ways. [SIRACH 2:15]
Those who fear the LORD seek to please him, those who love him
are filled with his law. [SIRACH 2:16]
Those who fear the LORD prepare their hearts and humble
themselves before him. [SIRACH 2:17]
He who fears the LORD honors his father, and serves his parents
as rulers. [SIRACH 3:7]
Where the pupil of the eye is missing, there is no light, and
where there is no knowledge, there is no wisdom. [SIRACH 3:24]
Wisdom: With all your soul draw close to her; with all your
strength keep her ways. Search her out, discover her; seek her and
you will find her. Then when you have her, do not let her go; Thus
will you afterward find rest in her, and she will become your joy.
[SIRACH 6:27-29]
With all your soul, fear God, revere his priests. [SIRACH 7:29]
The prince, the ruler, the judge are in honor; but none is
greater than he who fears God. [SIRACH 10:23]
Wisdom and understanding and knowledge of affairs, love and
virtuous paths are from the LORD. [SIRACH 11:15]
All wisdom is fear of the LORD; perfect wisdom is the
fulfillment of the law. [SIRACH 19:17]
There are those with little understanding who fear God, and
those of great intelligence who violate the law. [SIRACH 19:20]
Better the man who hides his folly than the one who hides his
wisdom. [SIRACH 20:30]
Thus all who dwell on the earth shall know, and all who inhabit
the world shall understand, That nothing is better than the fear
of the LORD, nothing more salutary than to obey his commandments.
[SIRACH 23:27]
He who finds wisdom is great indeed, but not greater than he
who fears the LORD. [SIRACH 25:10]
Fear of the LORD surpasses all else. its possessor is beyond
compare. [SIRACH 25:11]
Unless you earnestly hold fast to the fear of the LORD,
suddenly your house will be thrown down. [SIRACH 27:3]
He who fears the LORD is never alarmed, never afraid; for the
LORD is his hope. [SIRACH 34:14]
The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the LORD, and knowledge
of the Holy One is understanding. [PROV 9:10]
If you are wise, it is to your own advantage; and if you are
arrogant, you alone shall bear it. [PROV 9:12]
The wise man is cautious and shuns evil; the fool is reckless
and sure of himself. [PROV 14:16]
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that a man may
avoid the snares of death. [PROV 14:27]
The fear of the LORD is training for wisdom, and humility goes
before honors. [PROV 15:33]
How much better to acquire wisdom than gold! To acquire
understanding is more desirable than silver. [PROV 16:16]
Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the
LORD is to be praised. [PROV 31:30]
For he who despises wisdom and instruction is doomed. Vain is
their hope, fruitless are their labors, and worthless are their
works. [WISDOM 3:11]
And if riches be a desirable possession in life, what is more
rich than Wisdom, who produces all things? [WISDOM 8:5]
Or again, if one yearns for copious learning, (wisdom) knows
the things of old, and infers those yet to come. (Wisdom)
understands the turns of phrases and the solutions of riddles;
signs and wonders (wisdom) knows in advance and the outcome of
times and ages. [WISDOM 8:8]
Serve the LORD with fear; with trembling bow down in homage,
Lest God be angry and you perish from the way in a sudden blaze of
anger. Happy are all who take refuge in God! [PS 2:11]
Happy are all who fear the LORD, who walk in the ways of God.
[PS 128:1]
Fear of the LORD warms the heart, giving gladness and joy and
length of days. [SIRACH 1:10]
He who fears the LORD will have a happy end; even on the day of
his death he will be blessed. [SIRACH 1:11]

BIG Book of Latin Activities For Catholics
Beginning - Intermediate (Vol. 1)
"Suitable For Children Or
Adults!" ~ "Perfect For Home Schoolers!"
+ + +
As many faithful Catholics already know,
the majestic
Latin language – the 'official language' of the Catholic Church –
promotes unity, helps safeguard the purity of doctrine, connects us with
our Catholic ancestors, allows us to pray in "one voice", and even ties
back to the inscription on the Cross which was written in Hebrew, Latin,
and Greek. The Latin language is still used today in the precious
treasure that is the
Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, in 'everyday speech' (much of
English is derived from Latin), in mottos, in specialized fields, and in
educational endeavors. It has been shown that the study of Latin brings
many benefits. "And, Latin is truly the language of heaven!"
If you enjoy Latin, you may be glad to know that
this full-sized (8.5" x 11"), tradition-minded publication features an
assortment of activity types related to Latin (including: word searches,
crosswords, coloring activities, challenges, fill-ins, spelling bee,
quizzes, unscrambles, true/false, multiple choice, matching, cross-offs,
circling, word associations, translation exercises, and more...), and
treats of various topics (including: common Latin words, Latin language
facts, Latin grammar, nouns & verbs, abbreviations,
phrases / sayings / mottos, prefixes, cardinal numbers, grammatical gender,
inflection, word roots, diacritics / accenting, pronunciation, Latin
prayers / hymns, Scripture verses, Catholic phrases, and more...).
