When the LORD saw how great was man's wickedness on earth, and
how no desire that his heart conceived was ever anything but evil,
he regretted that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was grieved.
[GEN 6:5-6]
In the eyes of God the earth was corrupt and full of lawlessness.
When God saw how corrupt the earth had become, since all mortals led depraved lives on earth,
he said to Noah: "I have decided to put an end to all mortals on earth; the earth is full of lawlessness because of them. So I will destroy them and all life on earth."
[GEN 6:11-13]
WHEN the LORD smelled the sweet odor, he said to himself:
"Never again will I doom the earth because of man, since the
desires of man's heart are evil from the start; nor will I ever
again strike down all living beings, as I have done." [GEN 8:21]
Now the inhabitants of Sodom were very wicked in the sins they
committed against the LORD. [GEN 13:13]
You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments. [EX
20:4-6]
"You shall not repeat a false report. Do not join the
wicked in putting your hand, as an unjust witness, upon anyone."
[EX 23:1]
You know well enough how prone the people are to evil. [EX
32:22]
Moses at once bowed down to the ground in worship. Then he said, "If I find favor with you, O Lord, do come along in our company. This is indeed a stiff-necked people; yet pardon our wickedness and sins, and receive us as your own."
[EX 34:8-9]
"Pardon, then, the wickedness of this people in keeping with
your great kindness, even as you have forgiven them from Egypt
until now." [NUM 14:19]
'Even if Balak gave me his house full of silver and gold, I
could not of my own accord to anything, good or evil, contrary to
the command of the LORD'? Whatever the LORD says I must repeat.
[NUM 24:13]
So in his anger with the Israelites the LORD made them wander
in the desert forty years, until the whole generation that had
done evil in the sight of the LORD had died out. [NUM 32:13]
Then, as before, I lay prostrate before the LORD for forty days
and forty nights without eating or drinking, because of all the
sin you had committed in the sight of the LORD and the evil you
had done to provoke him. [DEUT 9:18]
"The LORD will put a curse on you, defeat and frustration
in every enterprise you undertake, until you are speedily
destroyed and perish for the evil you have done in forsaking me."
[DEUT 28:20]
"For I know that after my death you are sure to become corrupt
and to turn aside from the way along which I directed you, so that
evil will befall you in some future age because you have done evil
in the LORD'S sight, and provoked him by your deeds." [DEUT
31:29]
"If, after the good he has done for you, you forsake the LORD
and serve strange gods, he will do evil to you and destroy
you." [JOSH 24:20]
He will guard the footsteps of his faithful ones, but the
wicked shall perish in the darkness. For not by strength does man
prevail [Taken from 1SAM 2:9]
"Do not fear," Samuel answered them. "It is true
you have committed all this evil; still, you must not turn from
the LORD, but must worship him with your whole heart." [1SAM 12:20]
If instead you continue to do evil, both you and your king
shall "perish." [1SAM 12:25]
The spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and he was
tormented by an evil spirit sent by the LORD. [1SAM 16:14]
The old proverb says, 'From the wicked comes forth wickedness.'
So I will take no action against you. [1SAM 24:14]
"Although I am the anointed king, I am weak this day, and these
men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too ruthless for me. May the LORD
requite the evildoer in accordance with his evil deed." [2SAM
3:39]
And the king said to Shimei: "You know in your heart the
evil that you did to my father David. Now the LORD requites you
for your own wickedness." [1KGS 2:44]
Men will answer: 'They forsook the LORD, their God, who brought
their fathers out of the land of Egypt; they adopted strange gods
which they worshiped and served. That is why the LORD has brought
down upon them all this evil.' [1KGS 9:9]
Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD; he did not follow
him unreservedly as his father David had done. [1KGS 11:6]
Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and by their sins
angered him even more than their fathers had done. [1KGS 14:22]
But Omri did evil in the LORD'S sight beyond any of his
predecessors. [1KGS 16:25]
Ahab, son of Omri, did evil in the sight of the LORD more than
any of his predecessors. [1KGS 16:30]
"So now, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all
these prophets of yours, but the LORD himself has decreed evil
against you." [1KGS 22:23]
The LORD appeared to Solomon during the night and said to him: "I have heard your prayer, and I have chosen this place for my house of sacrifice. If I close heaven so that there is no rain, if I command the locust to devour the land, if I send pestilence among my people, and if my people, upon whom my name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek my presence and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven and pardon their sins and revive their land." [2CHRON
7:12-14]
He did evil, for he had not truly resolved to seek the LORD. [2CHRON 12:14]
I said: "My God, I am too ashamed and confounded to raise
my face to you, O my God, for our wicked deeds are heaped up above
our heads and our guilt reaches up to heaven." [EZRA 9:6]
"As soon as they had relief, they would go back to doing
evil in your sight. Then again you abandoned them to the power of
their enemies, who crushed them. Then they cried out to you, and
you heard them from heaven and delivered them according to your
mercy, many times over." [NEH 9:28]
In all that has come upon us you have been just, for you kept faith while we have done evil. Yes, our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept your law; they paid no attention to your commandments and the obligations of which you reminded them. While they were yet in their kingdom, in the midst of the many good things that you had given them and in the wide and fertile land that you had spread out before them, they did not serve you nor did they turn away from their evil deeds.
[NEH 9:33-35]
I took the nobles of Judah to task, demanding of them:
"What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the
sabbath day? Did not your fathers act in this same way, with the result that
our God has brought all this evil upon us and upon this city?
Would you add to the wrath against Israel by once more profaning
the sabbath?" [NEH 13:17-18]
A king's secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of God are
to be declared and made known. Praise them with due honor. Do
good, and evil will not find its way to you. [TOBIT 12:7]
Prayer and fasting are good, but better than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than abundance with wickedness.
[Taken from TOBIT 12:8]
"So, my children, note well what almsgiving does, and also what
wickedness does - it kills! But now my spirit is about to leave
me." [TOBIT 14:11]
"As long as the Israelites did not sin in the sight of
their God, they prospered, for their God, who hates wickedness,
was with them." [JDTH 5:17]
It was a dark and gloomy day. Tribulation and distress, evil
and great confusion, lay upon the earth. [ESTH A:7]
"O God, more powerful than all, hear the voice of those in
despair. Save us from the power of the wicked, and deliver me from
my fear." [ESTH C:30]
"For how can I witness the evil that is to befall my people, and
how can I behold the destruction of my race?" [ESTH 8:6]
Many of the people, those who abandoned the law, joined them
and committed evil in the land. [1MACC 1:52]
"Do not treat us according to our evil deeds," they
said, "but according to your mercy." [1MACC 13:46]
Forever blessed be our God, who has thus punished the wicked!
[2MACC 1:17]
The prayer was as follows: "Lord, Lord God, creator of all things, awesome and strong, just and merciful, the only king and benefactor, who alone are gracious, just, almighty, and eternal, Israel's savior from all evil, who chose our forefathers and sanctified
them"
[Taken from 2MACC 1:24-25]
And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you noticed my servant
Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, blameless and
upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?" [JOB 1:8]
And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you noticed my servant
Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, faultless and
upright, fearing God and avoiding evil? He still holds fast to his
innocence although you incited me against him to ruin him without
cause." [JOB 2:3]
But he said to her, "Are even you going to speak as
senseless women do? We accept good things from God; and should we
not accept evil?" Through all this, Job said nothing sinful.
[JOB 2:10]
Out of six troubles he will deliver you, and at the seventh no
evil shall touch you. [JOB 5:19]
And to man he said: Behold, the fear of the LORD is wisdom; and
avoiding evil is understanding. [JOB 28:28]
By turning man from evil and keeping pride away from him, He withholds his soul from the pit and his life from passing to the grave. [JOB
33:17-18]
Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from
God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong! [JOB
34:10]
Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate
justice. [JOB 34:12]
There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.
[JOB 34:22]
Behold, God rejects the obstinate in heart; he preserves not
the life of the wicked. [JOB 36:5]
He opens their ears to correction and exhorts them to turn back from evil. If they obey and serve him, they spend their days in prosperity, their years in happiness. But if they obey not, they perish; they die for lack of knowledge. [JOB
36:10-12]
But from the wicked the light is withheld, and the arm of pride
is shattered. [JOB 38:15]
Happy those who do not follow the counsel of the wicked, Nor
go the way of sinners, nor sit in company with scoffers. [PS 1:1]
Therefore the wicked will not survive judgment, nor will
sinners in the assembly of the just. [PS 1:5]
The LORD watches over the way of the just, but the way of the
wicked leads to ruin. [PS 1:6]
You are not a god who delights in evil; no wicked person finds refuge with you; the arrogant cannot stand before you.
You hate all who do evil; you destroy all who speak falsely. Murderers and deceivers the LORD abhors.
[PS 5:5-7]
Away from me, all who do evil! The LORD has heard my weeping. The LORD has heard my prayer; the LORD takes up my plea. My foes will be terrified and disgraced; all will fall back in sudden shame. [PS
6:9-11]
Bring the malice of the wicked to an end; uphold the innocent,
O God of justice, who tries hearts and minds. [PS 7:10]
The LORD is revealed in this divine rule: by the deeds they do
the wicked are trapped. To Sheol the wicked will depart, all the nations that forget
God. [Taken from PS 9:17-18]
Why, LORD, do you stand at a distance and pay no heed to these troubled times? Arrogant scoundrels pursue the poor; they trap them by their cunning schemes.
The wicked even boast of their greed; these robbers curse and scorn the LORD. In their insolence the wicked boast: "God doesn't care, doesn't even exist." Yet their affairs always succeed; they ignore your judgment on high; they sneer at all who oppose them. They say in their hearts, "We will never fall; never will we see misfortune." Their mouths are full of oaths, violence, and lies; discord and evil are under their tongues. They wait in ambush near towns; their eyes watch for the
helpless to murder the innocent in secret. They lurk in ambush like lions in a thicket, hide there to trap the poor, snare them and close the net. The helpless are crushed, laid low; they fall into the power of the wicked, Who say in their hearts, "God pays no attention, shows no concern, never bothers to look."
Rise up, LORD God! Raise your arm! Do not forget the poor! Why should the wicked scorn God, say in their hearts, "God doesn't care"? But you do see; you do observe this misery and sorrow; you take the matter in hand.
To you the helpless can entrust their cause; you are the defender of orphans. Break the arms of the wicked and depraved; make them account for their crimes; let none of them survive. [PS
10:1-15]
For the leader. Of David. Fools say in their hearts,
"There is no God." Their deeds are loathsome and corrupt; not one does what is right.
The LORD looks down from heaven upon the human race, To see if even one is wise, if even one seeks God. All have gone astray; all alike are perverse.
Not one does what is right, not even one. Will these evildoers never learn? They devour my people as they devour bread; they do not call upon the LORD. They have good reason, then, to fear; God is with the company of the just.
[Taken from PS 14:1-5]
Rise, O LORD, confront and cast them down; rescue me so from
the wicked. [PS 17:13]
Though they intend evil against you, devising plots, they will not succeed, For you will put them to flight; you will aim at them with your bow. Arise, LORD, in your power! We will sing and chant the praise of your might. [PS
21:12-14]
Many dogs surround me; a pack of evildoers closes in on me. So wasted are my hands and feet that I can count all my bones. They stare at me and gloat; they divide my garments among them; for my clothing they cast lots. [PS 22:17-19]
I hate the company of evildoers; with the wicked I do not sit.
[PS 26:5]
Do not let me be put to shame, for I have called to you, LORD.
Put the wicked to shame; reduce them to silence in Sheol. [PS
31:18]
Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but love surrounds those
who trust in the LORD. [PS 32:10]
Keep your tongue from evil, your lips from speaking lies. [PS
34:14]
Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. [PS
34:15]
The LORD'S face is against evildoers to wipe out their memory from the earth. When the just cry out, the LORD hears and rescues them from all distress. [PS
34:17-18]
Evil will slay the wicked; those who hate the just are
condemned. [PS 34:22]
Let those who seek my life be put to shame and disgrace. Let
those who plot evil against me be turned back and confounded. [PS
35:4]
Malicious witnesses come forward, accuse me of things I do not know. They repay me evil for good and I am all alone. Yet I, when they were ill, put on sackcloth, afflicted myself with fasting, sobbed my prayers upon my bosom. I went about in grief as for my brother, bent in mourning as for my mother. Yet when I stumbled they gathered with glee, gathered against me like strangers.
They slandered me without ceasing; without respect they mocked me, gnashed their teeth against me. [PS 35:11-16]
Sin directs the heart of the wicked; their eyes are closed to the fear of God. For they live with the delusion: their guilt will not be known and hated. Empty and false are the words of their mouth; they have ceased to be wise and do good. In their beds they hatch plots; they set out on a wicked way; they do not reject evil. [PS
36:2-5]
For with you is the fountain of life, and in your light we see light. Continue your kindness toward your friends, your just defense of the honest heart. Do not let the foot of the proud overtake me, nor the hand of the wicked disturb me. There make the evildoers fall; thrust them down, never to rise.
[PS 36:10-13]
Those who do evil will be cut off, but those who wait for the
LORD will possess the land. Wait a little, and the wicked will be no more; look for them
and they will not be there. [PS 37:9-10]
The wicked plot against the just and grind their teeth at them; But the LORD laughs at them, knowing their day is coming.
[PS 37:12-13]
Better the poverty of the just than the great wealth of the
wicked. [PS 37:16]
The wicked perish, the enemies of the LORD; Like the beauty of
meadows they vanish; like smoke they disappear. [PS 37:20]
The wicked borrow but do not repay; the just are generous in
giving. [PS 37:21]
Turn from evil and do good, that you may inhabit the land
forever. For the LORD loves justice and does not abandon the faithful.
When the unjust are destroyed, and the children of the wicked cut
off, The just will possess the land and live in it forever. [PS
37:27-29]
But all sinners will be destroyed; the future of the wicked
will be cut off. [PS 37:38]
The LORD helps and rescues them, rescues and saves them from
the wicked, because in God they take refuge. [PS 37:40]
LORD, do not withhold your compassion from me; may your enduring kindness ever preserve me. For all about me are evils beyond count; my sins so overcome me I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head; my courage fails me. LORD, graciously rescue me! Come quickly to help me, LORD! [PS
40:12-14]
Why should I fear in evil days, when my wicked pursuers ring me round, Those who trust in their wealth and boast of their abundant riches? One cannot redeem oneself, pay to God a ransom. [PS
49:6-8]
But to the wicked God says: "Why do you recite my commandments and profess my covenant with your lips? You hate discipline; you cast my words behind you! When you see thieves, you befriend them; with adulterers you throw in your lot. You give your mouth free rein for evil; you harness your tongue to deceit. You sit maligning your own kin, slandering the child of your own mother. When you do these things should I be silent? Or do you think that I am like you? I accuse you, I lay the charge before you.
Understand this, you who forget God, lest I attack you with no one to rescue. Those who offer praise as a sacrifice honor me; to the obedient I will show the salvation of God." [PS 50:16-23]
Against you alone have I sinned; I have done such evil in your
sight That you are just in your sentence, blameless when you
condemn. [PS 51:6]
Why do you glory in evil, you scandalous liar? All day long you plot destruction; your tongue is like a sharpened razor, you skillful deceiver. You love evil rather than good, lies rather than honest speech. You love any word that destroys, you deceitful tongue.
Now God will strike you down, leave you crushed forever, Pluck you from your tent, uproot you from the land of the living. The righteous will look on with awe; they will jeer and say: "That one did not take God as a refuge, but trusted in great wealth, relied on devious plots." But I, like an olive tree in the house of God, trust in God's faithful love forever.
[Taken from PS 52:3-10]
Turn back the evil upon my foes; in your faithfulness, destroy
them. [PS 54:7]
Let death take them by surprise; let them go down alive to
Sheol, for evil is in their homes and hearts. But I will call upon God, and the LORD will save me.
[PS 55:16-17]
The wicked have been corrupt since birth; liars from the
womb, they have gone astray. [PS 58:4]
Deliver me from evildoers; from the bloodthirsty save me. [PS
59:3]
Hide me from the malicious crowd, the mob of evildoers. [PS
64:3]
To you we owe our hymn of praise, O God on Zion; To you our vows must be fulfilled, you who hear our prayers.
To you all flesh must come with its burden of wicked deeds. We are overcome by our sins; only you can pardon them. [PS
65:2-4]
I called to the Lord with my mouth; praise was upon my tongue. Had I cherished evil in my heart, the Lord would not have heard. But God did hear and listened to my voice in prayer. Blessed be God, who did not refuse me the kindness I sought in prayer. [PS
66:17-20]
The wind will disperse them like smoke; as wax is melted by
fire, so the wicked will perish before God. [PS 68:3]
My God, rescue me from the power of the wicked, from the
clutches of the violent. [PS 71:4]
Out of their stupidity comes sin; evil thoughts flood their
hearts. [PS 73:7]
You shall not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day, Nor the pestilence that roams in darkness, nor the plague that ravages at noon. Though a thousand fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, near you it shall not come. You need simply watch; the punishment of the wicked you will see. You have the LORD for your refuge; you have made the Most High your stronghold. No evil shall befall you, no affliction come near your tent.
[PS 91:5-10]
Though the wicked flourish like grass and all sinners thrive,
They are destined for eternal destruction [Taken from PS 92:8]
How long, LORD, shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked glory? How long will they mouth haughty speeches, go on boasting, all these evildoers? They crush your people, LORD, torment your very own. [PS 94:3-5]
Happy those whom you guide, LORD, whom you teach by your instruction. You give them rest from evil days, while a pit is being dug for the wicked. You, LORD, will not forsake your people, nor abandon your very own. [PS 94:12-14]
The LORD loves those who hate evil, protects the lives of the
faithful, rescues them from the hand of the wicked. [PS 97:10]
I shun the devious of heart; the wicked I do not tolerate. [PS
101:4]
May sinners vanish from the earth, and the wicked be no more.
Bless the LORD, my soul! Hallelujah! [PS 104:35]
Some fell sick from their wicked ways, afflicted because of
their sins. [PS 107:17]
Fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the wickedness of
its people. [PS 107:34]
Rage seizes me because of the wicked; they forsake your
teaching. [PS 119:53]
Though the snares of the wicked surround me, your teaching I do
not forget. [PS 119:61]
The wicked hope to destroy me, but I pay heed to your decrees.
[PS 119:95]
I keep my steps from every evil path, that I may obey your
word. [PS 119:101]
The wicked have set snares for me, but from your precepts I do
not stray. [PS 119:110]
Depart from me, you wicked, that I may observe the commands of
my God. [PS 119:115]
Like dross you regard all the wicked on earth; therefore I love
your decrees. [PS 119:119]
The LORD will guard you from all evil, will always guard your
life. [PS 121:7]
The scepter of the wicked will not prevail in the land given
to the just, Lest the just themselves turn their hands to evil.
[PS 125:3]
But the just LORD cut me free from the ropes of the yoke of the
wicked. [PS 129:4]
Deliver me, LORD, from the wicked; preserve me from the violent, From those who plan evil in their hearts, who stir up conflicts every
day [Taken from PS 140:2-3]
Keep me, LORD, from the clutches of the wicked; preserve me
from the violent, who plot to trip me up. [PS 140:5]
LORD, do not grant the desires of the wicked; do not let their
plots succeed. [Taken from PS 140:9]
Slanderers will not survive on earth; evil will quickly entrap the violent. For I know the LORD will secure justice for the needy, their rights for the poor. Then the just will give thanks to your name; the upright will dwell in your presence. [PS 140:12-14]
Guard me from the trap they have set for me, from the snares of evildoers. Into their own nets let all the wicked fall, while I make good my own escape. [PS
141:9-10]
You, LORD, watch over all who love you, but all the wicked you
destroy. [PS 145:20]
The LORD protects the stranger, sustains the orphan and the
widow, but thwarts the way of the wicked. [PS 146:9]
The LORD sustains the poor, but casts the wicked to the ground.
[PS 147:6]
For wisdom will enter your heart, knowledge will please your soul, Discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you; Saving you from the way of evil men, from men of perverse speech, Who leave the straight paths to walk in the way of darkness, Who delight in doing evil, rejoice in perversity; Whose ways are crooked, and devious their
paths [Taken from PROV 2:10-15]
Be not wise in your own eyes, fear the LORD and turn away from
evil [Taken from PROV 3:7]
Plot no evil against your neighbor, against him who lives at
peace with you. [PROV 3:29]
The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but the
dwelling of the just he blesses [Taken from PROV 3:33]
The path of the wicked enter not, walk not on the way of evil men; Shun it, cross it not, turn aside from it, and pass on. For they cannot rest unless they have done evil;
to have made no one stumble steals away their sleep. [PROV 4:14-16]
Turn neither to right nor to left, keep your foot far from
evil. [PROV 4:27]
By his own iniquities the wicked man will be caught, in the
meshes of his own sin he will be held fast [Taken from PROV 5:22]
There are six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to him; Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood; A heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that run swiftly to evil, The false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.
[PROV 6:16-19]
Pride, arrogance, the
evil way, and the perverse mouth I hate. [Taken from PROV 8:13]
He who corrects an arrogant man earns insult; and he who
reproves a wicked man incurs opprobrium. [PROV 9:7]
The LORD permits not the just to hunger, but the craving of the
wicked he thwarts. [PROV 10:3]
The memory of the just will be blessed, but the name of the
wicked will rot. [PROV 10:7]
A fountain of life is the mouth of the just, but the mouth of
the wicked conceals violence. [PROV 10:11]

wicked, to sin. [PROV 10:16]
Like choice silver is the just man's tongue; the heart of the
wicked is of little worth. [PROV 10:20]
What the wicked man fears will befall him, but the desire of
the just will be granted. When the tempest passes, the wicked man is no more; but the
just man is established forever. [PROV 10:24-25]
The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked
are brief. [PROV 10:27]

wicked, how to pervert. [PROV 10:32]
The honest man's virtue makes his way straight, but by his
wickedness the wicked man falls. [PROV 11:5]

just shall escape. [PROV 11:21]

and the sinner! [PROV 11:31]

shame and disgrace. [PROV 13:5]
