Some time after these events, this word of the LORD came to
Abram in a vision: "Fear not, Abram! I am your shield; I will
make your reward very great." [GEN 15:1]
Balak beat his palms together in a blaze of anger at Balaam and said to him, "It was to curse my foes that I summoned you here; yet three times now you have even blessed them instead! Be off at once, then, to your home. I promised to reward you richly, but the LORD has withheld the reward from you!" Balaam replied to Balak, "Did I not warn the very messengers whom you sent to me, 'Even if Balak gave me his house full of silver and gold, I could not of my own accord to anything, good or evil, contrary to the command of the LORD'? Whatever the LORD says I must repeat." [NUM
24:10-13]
"As your reward for heeding these decrees and observing
them carefully, the LORD, your God, will keep with you the
merciful covenant which he promised on oath to your fathers. He
will love and bless and multiply you; he will bless the fruit of
your womb and the produce of your soil, your grain and wine and
oil, the issue of your herds and the young of your flocks, in the
land which he swore to your fathers he would give you. You will be
blessed above all peoples; no man or woman among you shall be
childless nor shall your livestock be barren. The LORD will remove
all sickness from you; he will not afflict you with any of the
malignant diseases that you know from Egypt, but will leave them
with all your enemies. You shall consume all the nations which the
LORD, your God, will deliver up to you. You are not to look on
them with pity, lest you be ensnared into serving their gods.
Perhaps you will say to yourselves, 'These nations are greater
than we. How can we dispossess them?' But do not be afraid of
them. Rather, call to mind what the LORD, your God, did to Pharaoh
and to all Egypt: the great testings which your own eyes have
seen, the signs and wonders, his strong hand and outstretched arm
with which the LORD, your God, brought you out. The same also will
he do to all the nations of whom you are now afraid... He will
deliver their kings into your hand, that you may make their names
perish from under the heavens. No man will be able to stand up
against you, till you have put an end to them. The images of their
gods you shall destroy by fire. Do not covet the silver or gold on
them, nor take it for yourselves, lest you be ensnared by it; for
it is an abomination to the LORD, your God. You shall not bring
any abominable thing into your house, lest you be doomed with it;
loathe and abhor it utterly as a thing that is doomed." [DEUT
7:12-19,24-26]
Casting herself prostrate upon the ground, she said to him, "Why should I, a foreigner, be favored with your notice?" Boaz answered her: "I have had a complete account of what you have done for your mother-in-law after your husband's death; you have left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and have come to a people whom you did not know previously. May the LORD reward what you have done! May you receive a full reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge." [RUTH
2:10-12]
When David finished saying these things to Saul, Saul answered, "Is that your voice, my son David?" And he wept aloud. Saul then said to David: "You are in the right rather than I; you have treated me generously, while I have done you harm. Great is the generosity you showed me today, when the LORD delivered me into your grasp and you did not kill me. For if a man meets his enemy, does he send him away unharmed? May the LORD reward you generously for what you have done this day. And now, since I know that you shall surely be king and that sovereignty over Israel shall come into your possession, swear to me by the LORD that you will not destroy my descendants and that you will not blot out my name and family." David gave Saul his oath and Saul returned home, while David and his men went up to the refuge. [1SAM
24:17-23]
Then Saul said: "I have done wrong. Come back, my son David, I will not harm you again, because you have held my life precious today. Indeed, I have been a fool and have made a serious mistake." But David answered: "Here is the king's spear. Let an attendant come over to get it. The LORD will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness. Today, though the LORD delivered you into my grasp, I would not harm the LORD'S anointed. As I valued your life highly today, so may the LORD value my life highly and deliver me from all difficulties." [1SAM
26:21-24]
But Ahimaaz, son of Zadok, said to Joab again, "Come what may, permit me also to run after the
Cushite." Joab replied: "Why do you want to run, my son? You will receive no reward." But he insisted, "Come what may, I want to run." Joab said to him, "Very well." Ahimaaz sped off by way of the Jordan plain and outran the
Cushite. [2SAM 18:22-23]
In escorting the king across the Jordan, your servant is doing
little enough! Why should the king give me this reward? [2SAM
19:37]
"The LORD rewarded me according to my justice; according
to the cleanness of my hands he requited me." [2SAM 22:21]
Look kindly on the prayer and petition of your servant, O LORD, my God, and listen to the cry of supplication your servant makes before you. May your eyes watch day and night over this temple, the place where you have decreed you shall be honored; may you heed the prayer which I your servant offer toward this place. Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people Israel which they direct toward this place. Listen from your heavenly dwelling, and when you have heard, pardon. "When any man sins against his neighbor and is required to take an oath of execration against himself, and when he comes for the oath before your altar in this temple, listen from heaven: take action and pass judgment on your servants, requiting the wicked man and holding him responsible for his conduct, but absolving the innocent and rewarding him according to his virtue."
[2CHRON 6:19-23]
Upon Azariah, son of Oded, came the spirit of God. He went forth to meet Asa and said to him: "Hear me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin! The LORD is with you when you are with him, and if you seek him he will be present to you; but if you abandon him, he will abandon you. For a long time Israel had no true God, no priest-teacher and no law, but when in their distress they turned to the LORD, the God of Israel, and sought him, he was present to them. In that former time there was no peace for anyone to go or come, but there were many terrors upon the inhabitants of the lands. Nation crushed nation and city crushed city, for God
destroyed them by every kind of adversity. But as for you, be strong and do not relax, for your work shall be rewarded."
[2CHRON 15:1-7]
"Do not keep with you overnight the wages of any man who
works for you, but pay him immediately. If you thus behave as
God's servant, you will receive your reward. Keep a close watch on
yourself, my son, in everything you do, and discipline yourself in
all your conduct." [TOBIT 4:14]
"May God make this redound to your everlasting honor, rewarding
you with blessings, because you risked your life when your people
were being oppressed, and you averted our disaster, walking
uprightly before our God." And all the people answered,
"Amen! Amen!" [JDTH 13:20]
So he sent them this message: "King Demetrius sends greetings to the Jewish nation. We have heard how you have kept the treaty with us and continued in our friendship and not gone over to our enemies, and we are glad. Continue, therefore, to keep faith with us, and we will reward you with favors in return for what you do in our behalf. We will grant you many exemptions and will bestow gifts on you."
[1MACC 10:25-28]
But when King Demetrius was sure of his royal throne, and the land was peaceful under his rule, he broke all his promises and became estranged from Jonathan. Instead of rewarding Jonathan for all the favors he had received from him, he caused him much trouble.
[1MACC 11:52-53]
They also killed the commander of Timothy's forces, a most wicked man, who had done great harm to the Jews. While celebrating the victory in their ancestral city, they
[killed] both those who had set fire to the sacred gates and Callisthenes, who had taken refuge in a little house; so he received the reward his wicked deeds deserved.
[Taken from 2MACC 8:32-33]
He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.
[2MACC 12:43-46]
The LORD acknowledged my righteousness, rewarded my clean hands. For I kept the ways of the LORD; I was not disloyal to my God. His laws were all before me, his decrees I did not cast aside. I was honest toward him; I was on guard against sin. So the LORD rewarded my righteousness, the cleanness of my hands in his
sight. Toward the faithful you are faithful; to the honest you are honest; Toward the sincere, sincere; but to the perverse you are devious. [PS
18:21-27]
The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. The
precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart. The command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The statutes of the LORD are true, all of them just; More desirable than gold, than a hoard of purest gold,
Sweeter also than honey or drippings from the comb. By them your servant is instructed; obeying them brings much reward. [PS
19:8-12]
The wicked have been corrupt since birth; liars from the womb,
they have gone astray. Their poison is like the poison of a snake,
like that of a serpent stopping its ears... Make them vanish like water flowing away; trodden down, let them wither like grass...
Then the just shall rejoice to see the vengeance and bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked. Then it will be said: "Truly there is a reward for the just; there is a God who is judge on earth!" [Taken from PS 58:4-5,8,11-12]
Add that to their crimes; let them not attain to your reward.
[PS 69:28]
My heart is set on fulfilling your laws; they are my reward
forever. [PS 119:112]
Children too are a gift from the LORD, the fruit of the
womb, a reward. [PS 127:3]
The just man's recompense leads to life, the gains of the
wicked, to sin. [PROV 10:16]
The wicked man makes empty profits, but he who sows virtue has
a sure reward. [PROV 11:18]
From the fruit of his words a man has his fill of good things,
and the work of his hands comes back to reward him. [PROV 12:14]
He who despises the word must pay for it, but he who reveres
the commandment will be rewarded. [PROV 13:13]
Misfortune pursues sinners, but the just shall be recompensed
with good. [PROV 13:21]
The reward of humility and fear of the LORD is riches, honor
and life. [PROV 22:4]
When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls...Give her a reward of her labors, and let her works praise her
at the city gates. [PROV 31:10,31]
These were their thoughts, but they erred; for their wickedness blinded them, And they knew not the hidden counsels of God;
neither did they count on a recompense of holiness nor discern the innocent souls' reward. [WISDOM 2:21-22]
So also the eunuch whose hand wrought no misdeed, who held no
wicked thoughts against the LORD- For he shall be given fidelity's
choice reward and a more gratifying heritage in the LORD'S temple.
[WISDOM 3:14]
But the just live forever, and in the LORD is their recompense,
and the thought of them is with the Most High. [WISDOM 5:15]
[Wisdom] entered the soul of the LORD'S servant, and withstood fearsome kings with signs and portents; she gave the holy ones the recompense of their labors,
Conducted them by a wondrous road, and became a shelter for them by day
and a starry flame by night. [Taken from WISDOM 10:16-17]
You who fear the LORD, trust him, and your reward will not be
lost. [SIRACH 2:8]
A man may become rich through a miser's life, and this is his allotted reward: When he says: "I have found rest,
now I will feast on my possessions," He does not know how long it will be
till he dies and leaves them to others.
[SIRACH 11:18-19]
Do good to the just man and reward will be yours, if not from
him, from the LORD. [SIRACH 12:2]
Whoever does good has his reward, which each receives according
to his deeds. [SIRACH 16:14]
Fill Zion with your majesty, your temple with your glory. Give evidence of your deeds of old;
fulfill the prophecies spoken in your name, Reward those who have hoped in you,
and let your prophets be proved true. Hear the prayer of your servants,
for you are ever gracious to your people; Thus it will be known to the very ends of the earth
that you are the eternal God. [SIRACH 36:13-17]
The LORD has granted me my lips as a reward, and my tongue will
declare his praises. [SIRACH 51:22]
Work at your tasks in due season, and in his own time God will
give you your reward. [SIRACH 51:30]
Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not!
Here is your God, he comes with vindication; With divine
recompense he comes to save you. [ISA 35:4]
Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by his strong
arm; Here is his reward with him, his recompense before him. [ISA
40:10]
Go up onto a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings; Cry out at the top of your voice,
Jerusalem, herald of good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah:
Here is your God! Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by his strong arm;
Here is his reward with him,
his recompense before him. Like a shepherd he feeds his flock;
in his arms he gathers the lambs,
Carrying them in his bosom,
and leading the ewes with care. [ISA 49:9-11]
For I, the LORD, love what is right, I hate robbery and
injustice; I will give them their recompense faithfully, a lasting
covenant I will make with them. [ISA 61:8]
But you who harvest the grain shall eat it, and you shall praise the LORD; You who gather the grapes shall drink the wine in the courts of my sanctuary. Pass through, pass through the gates,
prepare the way for the people; Build up, build up the highway,
clear it of stones, raise up a standard over the nations. See, the LORD proclaims to the ends of the earth: Say to daughter Zion,
your savior comes! Here is his reward with him, his recompense before him. They shall be called the holy people, the redeemed of the LORD, And you shall be called "Frequented," a city that is not forsaken. [ISA
62:9-12]
I, the LORD, alone probe the mind and test the heart, To reward
everyone according to his ways, according to the merit of his
deeds. [JER 17:10]
Thus says the LORD: In Ramah is heard the sound of moaning, of bitter weeping! Rachel mourns her children, she refuses to be consoled because her children are no more. Thus says the LORD:
Cease your cries of mourning, wipe the tears from your eyes. The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward, says the LORD, they shall return from the enemy's land. There is hope for your future, says the LORD; your sons shall return to their own borders. [JER
31:15-17]
"Go, take your rest, you shall rise for your reward at the end
of days." [DAN 12:13]
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
[MT 5:10-12]
[Jesus said,] "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors
do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the
same? So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect."
[Taken from MT 5:43-48]
"(But) take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you."
[MT 6:1-4]
"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him." [MT
6:5-8]
"When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be
fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you." [MT
6:16-18]
"Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is righteous will receive a righteous man's reward.
And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a
disciple - amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward."
[MT 10:40-42]
Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong
to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.
[MK 9:41]
Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward
will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. [LK
6:22-23]
"But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to
those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who
mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer
the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak,
do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you,
and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back. Do
to others as you would have them do to you. For if you love those
who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those
who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you,
what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend
money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit (is)
that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same
amount. But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and
lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and
you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to
the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as (also) your
Father is merciful." [LK 6:27-36]
If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it! If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship. What then is my recompense? That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free of charge so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
[1COR 9:16-18]
Therefore, we aspire to please him, whether we are at home or away. For we must all appear
before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.
[2COR 5:9-10]
Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be slaves of the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will receive recompense for the wrong he committed, and there is no partiality.
[COL 3:23-25]
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let these first
learn to perform their religious duty to their own family and to
make recompense to their parents, for this is pleasing to God.
[1TM 5:4]
For if the word announced through angels proved firm, and every transgression and disobedience received its just recompense,
how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? Announced originally through the Lord, it was confirmed for us by those who had heard. God added his testimony by signs, wonders, various acts of power, and distribution of the gifts of the
Holy Spirit according to his will. [HEB 2:2-4]
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Remember the days past when, after you had been enlightened,
you endured a great contest of suffering. At times you were publicly exposed to abuse and affliction; at other times you associated yourselves with those so treated. You even joined in the sufferings of those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you had a better and lasting possession. Therefore, do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense. You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised. [HEB
10:31-36]
But without faith it is impossible to please him, for anyone
who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards
those who seek him. [HEB 11:6]
Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh; such is the deceitful one and the
antichrist. Look to yourselves that you do not lose what we worked for but may receive a full recompense.
Anyone who is so "progressive" as not to remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God; whoever remains in the teaching has the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him in your house or even greet him; for whoever greets him shares in his evil works.
[2JN 1:7-11]
Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet. There were loud voices
in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world now belongs to
our Lord and to his Anointed, and he will reign forever and
ever." The twenty-four elders who sat on their thrones before
God prostrated themselves and worshiped God and said: "We
give thanks to you, Lord God almighty, who are and who were. For
you have assumed your great power and have established your reign.
The nations raged, but your wrath has come, and the time for the
dead to be judged, and to recompense your servants, the prophets,
and the holy ones and those who fear your name, the small and the
great alike, and to destroy those who destroy the earth."
Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his
covenant could be seen in the temple. There were flashes of
lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a
violent hailstorm. [RV 11:15-19]
"Behold, I am coming soon. I bring with me the recompense I will give to each according to his deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the
end." [RV 22:12-13]
