He was driving out a demon (that was) mute, and when the demon had gone out, the mute person spoke and the crowds were amazed.
Some of them said, "By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons."
Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house.
And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons.
If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people
drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
But if it is by the finger of God that (I) drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe.
But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the
spoils. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it roams through arid regions searching for rest but, finding none, it says, 'I shall return to my home from which I came.'
But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself who move in and dwell there, and the last condition of that person is worse than the first."
[LK 11:14-26]
He was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath. And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect. When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, "Woman, you are set free of your infirmity." He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath, said to the crowd in reply, "There are six days when work should be done. Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day." The Lord said to him in reply, "Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger and lead it out for watering? This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day from this bondage?" When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.
[LK 13:10-17]
At that time some Pharisees came to him and said, "Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you." He replied, "Go and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I accomplish my
purpose. Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.'"
[LK 13:31-33]
Then Satan entered into Judas, the one surnamed Iscariot, who was counted among the Twelve, and he went to the chief priests and temple guards to discuss a plan for handing him over to them.
[LK 22:3-4]
"Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers."
[LK 22:31-32]
Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you twelve? Yet is
not one of you a devil?" [JN 6:70]
You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out
your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and
does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him. When he
tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the
father of lies. [JN 8:44]
"No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again.
This command I have received from my Father." Again there was a division among the Jews because of these words. Many of them said, "He is possessed and out of his mind; why listen to him?" Others said, "These are not the words of one possessed; surely a demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?"
[JN 10:18-21]
The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot,
to hand him over. [Taken from JN 13:2]
When he had said this, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, "Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me." The disciples looked at one another, at a loss as to whom he meant. One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus' side. So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant. He leaned back against Jesus' chest and said to him, "Master, who is it?" Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I hand the morsel
after I have dipped it." So he dipped the morsel and (took it and) handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot. After he took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly."
[JN 13:21-27]
[Jesus prayed,] "I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you
keep them from the evil one." [Taken from JN 17:15]
A man named Ananias, however, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property. He retained for himself, with his wife's knowledge, some of the purchase price, took the remainder, and put it at the feet of the apostles. But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so that you lied to the
Holy Spirit and retained part of the price of the land?" [ACTS
5:1-3]
You know the word (that) he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all,
what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached,
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
[ACTS 10:36-38]
But Elymas the magician (for that is what his name means) opposed them in an attempt to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him
and said, "You son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right, full of every sort of deceit and fraud. Will you not stop twisting the straight paths of (the) Lord?
Even now the hand of the Lord is upon you. You will be blind, and unable to see the sun for a time." Immediately a dark mist fell upon him, and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand.
[ACTS 13:8-11]
So extraordinary were the mighty deeds God accomplished at the
hands of Paul that when face cloths or aprons that touched his
skin were applied to the sick, their diseases left them and the
evil spirits came out of them. Then some itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those with evil spirits, saying, "I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." When the seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, tried to do this, the evil spirit said to them in reply, "Jesus I recognize, Paul I know, but who are you?" The person with the evil spirit then sprang at them and subdued them all. He so overpowered them that they fled naked and wounded from that house. When this became known to all the Jews and Greeks who lived in Ephesus, fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in great esteem.
[ACTS 19:11-17]
'I shall deliver you from this people and from the Gentiles to whom I send you, to open their eyes
that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may obtain forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been consecrated by faith in me.'
[ACTS 26:17-18]
For while your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I want you to be wise as to what is good, and simple as to what is evil; then the God of peace will quickly crush Satan
under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. [ROM 16:19-20]
It is widely reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of a kind not found even among
pagans - a man living with his father's wife. And you are inflated with pride.
Should you not rather have been sorrowful? The one who did this deed should be expelled from your midst. I, for my part, although absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as if present, pronounced judgment on the one who has committed this deed, in the name of (our) Lord Jesus: when you have gathered together and I am with you in spirit with the power of the Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan
for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
[1COR 5:1-5]
The husband should fulfill his duty toward his wife, and likewise the wife toward her husband. A wife does not have authority over her own body, but rather her husband, and similarly a husband does not have authority over his own body, but rather his wife. Do not deprive each other, except perhaps by mutual consent for a time, to be free for prayer, but then return to one another, so that Satan may not tempt you through your lack of self-control. This I say by way of concession,
however, not as a command.
[1COR 7:3-6]
No, I mean that what they sacrifice, (they sacrifice) to
demons, not to God, and I do not want you to become participants
with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and also the cup
of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and of the
table of demons. Or are we provoking the Lord to jealous anger?
Are we stronger than he? [1COR 10:20-22]
Whomever you forgive anything, so do I. For indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for you in the presence of Christ, so that we might not be taken advantage of by Satan, for we are not unaware of his purposes. [2COR
2:10-11]
But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his
cunning, your thoughts may be corrupted from a sincere (and pure)
commitment to Christ. For if someone comes and preaches another
Jesus than the one we preached, or if you receive a different
spirit from the one you received or a different gospel from the
one you accepted, you put up with it well enough. [2COR 11:3-4]
And what I do I will continue to do, in order to end this pretext of those who seek a pretext for being regarded as we are in the mission of which they boast. For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, who masquerade as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light. So it is not strange that his ministers also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
[2COR 11:12-15]
Although if I should wish to boast, I would not be foolish, for I would be telling the truth. But I refrain, so that no one may think more of me than what he sees in me or hears from me because of the abundance of the revelations. Therefore, that I might not become too elated,
a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated.
[2COR 12:6-7]
Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger, and do not leave room for the devil.
[EPH 4:26-27]
Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power.
Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil.
For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens.
Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground.
So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate,
and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming arrows of the evil one.
And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
[EPH 6:10-17]
We decided to go to you - I, Paul, not only once but more than
once - yet Satan thwarted us. [1THES 2:18]
Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy comes first and the lawless one is revealed,
the one doomed to perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of God, claiming that he is a
god - do you not recall that while I was still with you I told you these things? And now you know what is restraining,
that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is removed from the scene. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord (Jesus) will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming, the one whose coming springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in signs and wonders that lie, and in every wicked deceit for those who are perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth so that they may be saved. [2THES
2:3-10]
But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you
from the evil one. [2THES 3:3]
I entrust this charge to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophetic words once spoken about you. Through them may you fight a good fight by having faith and a good conscience. Some, by rejecting conscience, have made a shipwreck of their faith, among them Hymenaeus
and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. [1TM
1:18-20]
He should not be a recent convert, so that he may not become
conceited and thus incur the devil's punishment. [1TM 3:6]
He must also have a good reputation among outsiders, so that he
may not fall into disgrace, the devil's trap. [1TM 3:7]
Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the last times some will turn away from the faith by paying attention to deceitful spirits and demonic instructions through the hypocrisy of liars with branded consciences.
[1TM 4:1-2]
For some have already turned away to follow Satan. [1TM 5:15]
A slave of the Lord should not quarrel, but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant,
correcting opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant them repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth,
and that they may return to their senses out of the devil's snare, where they are entrapped by him, for his will.
[2TM 2:24-26]
Now since the children share in blood and flesh, he likewise
shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who
has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. [HEB
2:14-15]
You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble. Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless?
[JMS 2:19-20]
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. Wisdom of this kind does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
[JMS 3:14-15]
So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee
from you. [JMS 4:7]
Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling
around like a roaring lion looking for (someone) to devour. Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings.
The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ (Jesus) will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a
little. [1PT
5:8-10]
I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is
from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you
have conquered the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I
write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the
beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong and
the word of God remains in you, and you have conquered the evil
one. [1JN 2:13-14]
Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned
from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy
the works of the devil. No one who is begotten by God commits sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot sin because he is begotten by
God. In this way, the children of God and the children of the devil are made plain; no one who fails to act in righteousness belongs to God, nor anyone who does not love his
brother. For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: we should love one another, unlike Cain who belonged to the evil one and slaughtered his
brother. Why did he slaughter him? Because his own works were
evil, and those of his brother righteous. [1JN 3:8-12]
We know that no one begotten by God sins; but the one
begotten by God he protects, and the evil one cannot touch him. We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under
the power of the evil one. [1JN 5:18-19]
Yet the archangel Michael, when he argued with the devil in a
dispute over the body of Moses, did not venture to pronounce a
reviling judgment upon him but said, "May the Lord rebuke
you!" [JUDE 1:9]
"I know your tribulation and poverty, but you are rich. I
know the slander of those who claim to be Jews and are not, but
rather are members of the assembly of Satan. Do not be afraid of anything that you are going to suffer. Indeed, the devil will throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will face an ordeal for ten days. Remain faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." [RV
2:9-10]
"I know that you live where Satan's throne is, and yet you
hold fast to my name and have not denied your faith in me, not
even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was martyred
among you, where Satan lives." [RV 2:13]
But I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not uphold
this teaching and know nothing of the so-called deep secrets of
Satan: on you I will place no further burden, except that you must hold fast to what you have until I come. [RV
2:24-25]
Behold, I will make those of the assembly of Satan who claim to
be Jews and are not, but are lying, behold I will make them come
and fall prostrate at your feet, and they will realize that I love
you. [RV 3:9]
The rest of the human race, who were not killed by these
plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, to give up
the worship of demons and idols made from gold, silver, bronze,
stone, and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk. [RV 9:20]
"I will commission my two witnesses to prophesy for those twelve hundred and sixty days, wearing sackcloth." These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands
that stand before the Lord of the earth. If anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths and devours their enemies. In this way, anyone wanting to harm them is sure to be slain. They have the power to close up the sky so that no rain can fall during the time of their prophesying. They also have power to turn water into blood and to afflict the earth with any plague as often as they wish. When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will wage war against them and conquer them and kill them. [RV
11:3-7]
Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back,
but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it.
[RV 12:7-9]
"Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them.
But woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great fury, for he knows he has but a short time." When the dragon saw that it had been thrown down to the earth, it pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle,
so that she could fly to her place in the desert, where, far from the serpent, she was taken care of for a year, two years, and a half-year. The serpent,
however, spewed a torrent of water out of his mouth after the woman to sweep her away with the current. But the earth helped the woman and opened its mouth and swallowed the flood that the dragon spewed out of its mouth. Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God's commandments and bear witness to
Jesus. It took its position on the sand of the sea. [RV 12:12-18]
Then I saw a beast come out of the sea with ten horns and seven heads; on its horns were ten diadems, and on its heads blasphemous name(s). The beast I saw was like a leopard, but it had feet like a bear's, and its mouth was like the mouth of a lion. To it the dragon gave its own power and throne, along with great authority. I saw that one of its heads seemed to have been mortally wounded, but this mortal wound was healed.
Fascinated, the whole world followed after the beast. They worshiped the dragon because it gave its authority to the beast; they also worshiped the beast
and said, "Who can compare with the beast or who can fight against it?" The beast was given a mouth uttering proud boasts and blasphemies, and it was given authority to act for forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling and those who dwell in heaven. It was also allowed to wage war against the holy ones and conquer them, and it was granted authority over every tribe, people, tongue, and nation. All the inhabitants of the earth will worship it, all whose names were not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life, which belongs to the Lamb who was slain. Whoever has ears ought to hear these words. Anyone destined for captivity goes into captivity. Anyone destined to be slain by the sword shall be slain by the sword.
Such is the faithful endurance of the holy ones. Then I saw another beast come up out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb's but spoke like a dragon. It wielded all the authority of the first beast in its sight and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound had been healed. It performed great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of everyone. It deceived the inhabitants of the earth with the signs it was allowed to perform in the sight of the first beast, telling them to make an image for the beast who had been wounded by the sword and revived. It was then permitted to breathe life into the beast's image, so that the beast's image could speak and (could) have anyone who did not worship it put to death. It forced all the people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to be given a stamped image on their right hands or their foreheads, so that no one could buy or sell except one who had the stamped image of the beast's name or the number that stood for its name. Wisdom is needed here; one who understands can calculate the number of the beast, for it is a number that stands for a person. His number is six hundred and sixty-six. [RV
13:1-18]
A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice, "Anyone who worships the beast or its image, or accepts its mark on forehead or hand, will also drink the wine of God's fury,
poured full strength into the cup of his wrath, and will be tormented in burning sulfur before the holy angels and before the Lamb. The smoke of the fire that torments them will rise forever and ever, and there will be no relief day or night for those who worship the beast or its image or accept the mark of its name." [RV
14:9-11]
Then I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire. On
the sea of glass were standing those who had won the victory over
the beast and its image and the number that signified its name.
They were holding God's harps, and they sang the song of Moses, the servant of God,
and the song of the Lamb: "Great and wonderful are your works, Lord God almighty.
Just and true are your ways, O king of the nations." [RV
15:2-3]
The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth.
Festering and ugly sores broke out on those who had the mark of
the beast or worshiped its image. [RV 16:2]
The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast.
Its kingdom was plunged into darkness, and people bit their
tongues in pain and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores. But they did not repent of their works.
[RV 16:10-11]
I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come from the mouth of
the dragon, from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the
false prophet. These were demonic spirits who performed signs. They went out to the kings of the whole world to assemble them for the battle on the great day of God the almighty. [RV
16:13-14]
Then he carried me away in spirit to a deserted place where I saw a woman seated on a scarlet beast
that was covered with blasphemous names, with seven heads and ten horns. The angel said to me, "Why are you amazed? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, the beast with the seven heads and the ten horns. The beast that you saw existed once but now exists no longer. It will come up from the abyss and is headed for destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world shall be amazed when they see the beast, because it existed once but exists no longer, and yet it will come again. The beast
that existed once but exists no longer is an eighth king, but really belongs to the seven and is headed for destruction. The ten horns that you saw represent ten kings who have not yet been crowned;
they will receive royal authority along with the beast for one hour. They are of one mind and will give their power and authority to the beast. They will fight with the Lamb, but the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and king of kings, and those with him are called, chosen, and faithful." [RV
17:3,7-8,11-14]
Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their
armies gathered to fight against the one riding the horse and
against his army. The beast was caught and with it the false prophet who had
performed in its sight the signs by which he led astray those who
had accepted the mark of the beast and those who had worshiped its
image. The two were thrown alive into the fiery pool burning with
sulfur. [RV 19:19-20]
Then I saw an angel come down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the
abyss and a heavy chain. He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, which is the Devil or Satan,
and tied it up for a thousand years and threw it into the abyss, which he locked over it and sealed, so that it could no longer lead the nations astray until the thousand years are completed. After this, it is to be released for a short time. Blessed
and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over these; they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for (the) thousand years. When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison. He will go out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog,
to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. They invaded the breadth of the earth
and surrounded the camp of the holy ones and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them. The Devil who had led them astray was thrown into the pool of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet were. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. [RV
