We recently spent some time working on the appearance of the rightmost area of the site. The goal
was to make the site appear more optimally on certain devices / browsers (see sample images below).
Fortunately, the project took much less time than we anticipated.
However, there were some unavoidable (albeit momentary) appearance & functionality issues
during the process. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have
caused.
We did want to make visitors aware of some important items related to
this project, namely those below...
1. The changes may have
necessitated making various items wider or narrower. Note that the width
of some items had to be changed from a fixed amount to a percentage.
This may result in the appearance of horizontal scrollbars in some
browsers on some pages. We regret if this causes any inconvenience.
[Note: It is possible that various issues may be avoided or minimized when using a
widescreen monitor or viewing applicable pages in landscape mode (i.e.
wider rather than taller). Should you experience any issues, you might
consider changing the orientation to landscape if using a handheld
device or increasing the width of the browser window if using a desktop
computer.]
2. The changes were not
comprehensive. NOT all pages were changed. There were, thankfully, a large number of pages where display issues were not found.
3. Unfortunately, pages
may appear differently on various devices / browsers / etc. Should you
encounter issues with any pages, you might consider changing the orientation,
if applicable (e.g. to landscape mode if using a handheld device),
increasing the width of the browser window, or perhaps try another
device / browser / browser version / etc. Hopefully this latter option
will not be necessary, but if it is, it might provide a 'quick fix' in
the event that persistent display problems are encountered. [Note:
Please report such issues to us (please make sure to include basic
system information with your report - e.g. device & browser type,
version information, etc. - along with the URL of the affected page(s). Thank you for your feedback!]
4. We have updated our
technical assistance page (try
here) to provide additional suggestions / recommendations. We hope you will find it to be useful should issues be encountered (but hopefully there will not be any issues!).
5. There was at least
one 'content-heavy' page that we were unable to optimize (specifically
the news page
here). On this page, we instead placed a banner indicating that the
page may be best viewed on a widescreen monitor or in landscape mode.
6. During this project,
we also made some changes affecting our custom icon. The custom icon
generally should appear in applicable browser windows. If our custom
icon does not appear (and other sites' icons DO appear),
please let us know. [Note: Please include basic system information
such as device & browser type and version information with your report.

7. Please know that we
really count on visitor feedback to try to resolve display &
functionality issues. While we have tested the site on many browsers and
on both handheld devices and desktop computers, it is impossible for us
to view or test on everything. While we may not be able to fix every

problem. And please don't assume someone else will tell us, because they
may not. If you encounter an issue that needs to be fixed, please

We regret that
it has become necessary to make various alterations in order to try to
remain online. While it's been an honor and a privilege over the last
decade to communicate with our subscribers each month, we must now
indefinitely suspend our newsletter, along with making some other
important changes to our site & services. While the changes we will
need to implement have some drawbacks, the good news is that they may
free us up to work on some items from our huge backlog, thus allowing

Q. Besides the newsletter, what is
affected by the changes?
A. Besides the
newsletter, the changes may impact a good amount of commercial pages on
MyCatholicSource.com. Various other items may also be affected (e.g. we
are continuing Rosary Week, but it is no longer necessary to sign up).
However, a lot of other content should be unaffected, including content
on many popular pages. Try
here for a list of affected items.
Q. When are the changes effective?
A. Changes may be
effective immediately unless indicated otherwise.
Q. Why are the changes necessary?
A. After working on the
site for years (since 2001), we had the misfortune to go live in 2008
when the economy was in bad shape ["In 2008 the world economy faced
its most dangerous Crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s."
(Source: Encyclopedia Britannica website)]. We hoped things would
improve when the economy got better, but that hasn't panned out. The
situation is made worse by constantly changing requirements of search
engines (that we can't keep up with), difficulties sending bulk email
(our newsletter), and by regulatory/legislative issues that are
'back-breaking' for small businesses (e.g. recent Supreme Court decision
re: sales tax). We have also been harmed by false/slanderous reviews and
by the general failure of customers to leave reviews, despite telling us
they like our products (e.g. books, apps). We have tried to do
everything we can to remain online, but even with our small operating
costs, it has been very difficult/impossible to get many donations or
enough sales to cover all costs.
Q. What exactly is happening?
A. We are scaling down
our server and discontinuing/changing some internal and third party
services and features due to financial & other reasons. Some details are
still being worked out at this time (including features we are trying to
keep in place, but that may not be immediately functional). Try

Q. What are the goals for the changes?
A. Our hope is that the
changes will help us to remain online well into the future. Besides
reducing costs and saving time, we also hope the changes will allow us
to focus on other items/content and make management of the site easier.
Q. What can I do as a subscriber who
misses the Catholic content each month?
A. Although the monthly
newsletter is being indefinitely suspended, it is still possible to

words, increased text size on message, expanded number of recommended

on recommended links, added indirect searching of some databased
content, removed ? wildcard for better results, increased spacing

Please note that the
wildcard '?' (question mark) is no longer supported on our new search
page. This change was made because it seems users tended to input the
question mark as part of a query rather than as a wildcard (and thereby
incorrect results could be returned). At this time, the wildcard '*' is

improving the results from our new search engine and we are particularly
excited about one recent change that we have made. As you may know, this
site is driven by a number of independent databases and unfortunately
these databases cannot all be searched together. However, we have come
up with a 'work around' that may allow some indirect searching of
content from applicable databases on our new search page. The solution
isn't perfect as it does not cover all databased content and it requires
the user to input search criteria on the search page and also on the
applicable results page(s). However, we hope the benefits of this 'work
around' will outweigh the possible inconvenience. [Note: This change
is limited to our new search page ONLY. The old search page cannot
search through any databased content, even indirectly.]
A beta version of our

Amazon
Associates Program Terminated
We were abruptly notified by
Amazon.com that our Amazon Associates account was closed as a result
of a newly enacted California law concerning the charging of sales
tax. The abrupt & unfortunate cancellation of our account was
unexpected on our end and it was *not* caused by anything we did.
Rather, it was a result of a new state law. All California Amazon
Associates accounts were likewise cancelled.
This means that we will no longer
receive financial incentives on Amazon.com sales made as a result of
referrals from our site.
The first notice from Amazon and the
abrupt cancellation of our account occurred within less than 24
hours. Unfortunately, since our newsletter had already been
prepared, we were unable to reflect this change in our recent
newsletter.
We have spent many hours incorporating
Amazon links & images on our site and it will not be possible for us
to remove these items in the near future as we are absorbed in
another project and are enormously backlogged with other matters,
improvements, pending items, etc. We do hope public pressure on
lawmakers occurring during this potentially long delay may result in
conditions which will allow the reinstatement of our account by
Amazon so that we may continue to participate in this program in the
future.
In the meantime, however, please be
advised that we will *not* receive financial incentives from
Amazon.com, despite any wording to the contrary that may remain on
our site. Also, we will not be able to update any Amazon.com links
appearing on our site should they no longer work.

and apologize if it causes our visitors any inconvenience.
