The priests entered that night as usual, with their wives and
children, and they ate and drank everything. Early the next
morning, the king came with Daniel. "Are the seals unbroken,
Daniel?" he asked. And Daniel answered, "They are
unbroken, O king." As soon as he had opened the door, the
king looked at the table and cried aloud, "Great you are, O
Bel; there is no trickery in you." But Daniel laughed and
kept the king from entering. "Look at the floor," he
said; "whose footprints are these?" "I see the
footprints of men, women, and children!" said the king. The
angry king arrested the priests, their wives, and their children.
They showed him the secret door by which they used to enter to
consume what was on the table. [DAN 14:15-21]
Again the LORD said to me: Give your love to a woman beloved of
a paramour, an adulteress; Even as the LORD loves the people of
Israel, though they turn to other gods and are fond of raisin
cakes. [HOSEA 3:1]
Hear this word, women of the mountain of Samaria, you cows of
Bashan, You who oppress the weak and abuse the needy; Who say to
your lords, "Bring drink for us!" [AMOS 4:1]
The women of my people you drive out from their pleasant
houses; From their children you take away forever the honor I gave
them. [MICAH 2:9]
Now why do you cry out so? Are you without a king? Or has your
counselor perished, That you are seized with pains like a woman in
travail? Writhe in pain, grow faint, O daughter Zion, like a woman in
travail; For now shall you go forth from the city and dwell in the
fields; To Babylon shall you go, there shall you be rescued. There
shall the LORD redeem you from the hand of your enemies. [MICAH 4:9-10]
All your fortresses are but fig trees, bearing early figs That fall,
when shaken, into the hungry mouth. See, the troops are women in your midst; to your foes the gates of your land are open wide, fire has consumed their bars.
[NAHUM 3:12-13]
Then the angel who spoke with me came forward and said to me,
"Raise your eyes and see what this is that comes forth."
"What is it?" I asked. And he answered, "This is a
bushel container coming. This is their guilt in all the
land." Then a leaden cover was lifted, and there was a woman
sitting inside the bushel. "This is Wickedness," he
said; and he thrust her inside the bushel, pushing the leaden
cover into the opening. Then I raised my eyes and saw two women
coming forth with a wind ruffling their wings, for they had wings
like the wings of a stork. As they lifted up the bushel into the
air, I said to the angel who spoke with me, "Where are they
taking the bushel?" He replied, "To build a temple for
it in the land of Shinar; when the temple is ready, they will
deposit it there in its place." [ZECH 5:5-11]
Thus says the LORD: I will return to Zion, and I will dwell
within Jerusalem; Jerusalem shall be called the faithful city, and
the mountain of the LORD of hosts, the holy mountain. Thus says
the LORD of hosts: Old men and old women, each with staff in hand
because of old age, shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem.
The city shall be filled with boys and girls playing in her
streets. [ZECH 8:3-5]
Judah has broken faith; an abominable thing has been done in
Israel and in Jerusalem. Judah has profaned the temple which the
LORD loves, and has married an idolatrous woman. [MAL 2:11]
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'
But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
[MT 5:27-28]
"It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce.'
But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery."
[MT 5:31-32]
A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind
him and touched the tassel on his cloak. She said to herself,
"If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured." Jesus
turned around and saw her, and said, "Courage, daughter! Your
faith has saved you." And from that hour the woman was cured.
[MT 9:20-22]
Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been
none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom
of heaven is greater than he. [MT 11:11]
He spoke to them another parable. "The kingdom of heaven
is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of
wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened." [MT 13:33]
Then Jesus went from that place and withdrew to the region of
Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district
came and called out, "Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My
daughter is tormented by a demon." But he did not say a word
in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, "Send her
away, for she keeps calling out after us." He said in reply,
"I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of
Israel." But the woman came and did him homage, saying,
"Lord, help me." He said in reply, "It is not right
to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs."
She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps
that fall from the table of their masters." Then Jesus said
to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be
done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed from
that hour. [MT 15:21-28]
When Jesus finished these words, he left Galilee and went to
the district of Judea across the Jordan. Great crowds followed
him, and he cured them there. Some Pharisees approached him, and
tested him, saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his
wife for any cause whatever?" He said in reply, "Have
you not read that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male
and female' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his
father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall
become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must
separate." They said to him, "Then why did Moses command
that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss
(her)?" He said to them, "Because of the hardness of
your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the
beginning it was not so. I say to you, whoever divorces his wife
(unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits
adultery." [MT 19:1-9]
On that day Sadducees approached him, saying that there is no
resurrection. They put this question to him, saying,
"Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies without children, his
brother shall marry his wife and raise up descendants for his
brother.' Now there were seven brothers among us. The first
married and died and, having no descendants, left his wife to his
brother. The same happened with the second and the third, through
all seven. Finally the woman died. Now at the resurrection, of the
seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had been married to
her." Jesus said to them in reply, "You are misled
because you do not know the scriptures or the power of God. At the
resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are
like the angels in heaven. And concerning the resurrection of the
dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, 'I am the God
of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the
God of the dead but of the living." When the crowds heard
this, they were astonished at his teaching. [MT 22:23-33]
"When you see the desolating abomination spoken of through
Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place (let the reader
understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, a
person on the housetop must not go down to get things out of his
house, a person in the field must not return to get his cloak. Woe
to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days. Pray that
your flight not be in winter or on the sabbath, for at that time
there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the
beginning of the world until now, nor ever will be. And if those
days had not been shortened, no one would be saved; but for the
sake of the elect they will be shortened." [MT 24:15-22]
"But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels
of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. For as it was in the
days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In
(those) days before the flood, they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered
the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them
all away. So will it be (also) at the coming of the Son of Man
[that is, some will be taken to the kingdom, the others will be
left to perish].
Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will
be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be
taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not
know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the
master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was
coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken
into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not
expect, the Son of Man will come." [Taken from MT 24:36-44]
Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,
a woman came up to him with an alabaster jar of costly perfumed
oil, and poured it on his head while he was reclining at table.
When the disciples saw this, they were indignant and said,
"Why this waste? It could have been sold for much, and the
money given to the poor." Since Jesus knew this, he said to
them, "Why do you make trouble for the woman? She has done a
good thing for me. The poor you will always have with you; but you
will not always have me. In pouring this perfumed oil upon my
body, she did it to prepare me for burial. Amen, I say to you,
wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she
has done will be spoken of, in memory of her." [MT 26:6-13]
But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his
spirit. And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from
top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were
opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were
raised. And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection,
they entered the holy city and appeared to many. The centurion and
the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus feared greatly
when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, and they
said, "Truly, this was the Son of God!" There were many
women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus
from Galilee, ministering to him. Among them were Mary Magdalene
and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the
sons of Zebedee. [MT 27:50-56]
After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning,
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And
behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord
descended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat
upon it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was
white as snow. The guards were shaken with fear of him and became
like dead men. Then the angel said to the women in reply, "Do
not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He
is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see
the place where he lay." [MT 28:1-6]
There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years.
She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had
spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew
worse. She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the
crowd and touched his cloak. She said, "If I but touch his
clothes, I shall be cured." Immediately her flow of blood
dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her
affliction. Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him,
turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who has touched my
clothes?" But his disciples said to him, "You see how
the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, 'Who touched
me?'" And he looked around to see who had done it. The woman,
realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and
trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole
truth. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you.
Go in peace and be cured of your affliction." [MK 5:25-34]
From that place he went off to the district of Tyre. He entered
a house and wanted no one to know about it, but he could not
escape notice. Soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit
heard about him. She came and fell at his feet. The woman was a
Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth, and she begged him to drive the
demon out of her daughter. He said to her, "Let the children
be fed first. For it is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs." She replied and said to him,
"Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children's
scraps." Then he said to her, "For saying this, you may
go. The demon has gone out of your daughter." When the woman
went home, she found the child lying in bed and the demon gone. [MK
7:24-30]
He set out from there and went into the district of Judea (and)
across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered around him and, as was
his custom, he again taught them. The Pharisees approached and
asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?"
They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did
Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted him
to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told
them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you
this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, 'God made
them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father
and mother (and be joined to his wife), and the two shall become
one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore
what God has joined together, no human being must separate."
In the house the disciples again questioned him about this. He
said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and
marries another, she commits adultery." [MK 10:1-12]
Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him
and put this question to him, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote
for us, 'If someone's brother dies, leaving a wife but no child,
his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his
brother.' Now there were seven brothers. The first married a woman
and died, leaving no descendants. So the second married her and
died, leaving no descendants, and the third likewise. And the
seven left no descendants. Last of all the woman also died. At the
resurrection (when they arise) whose wife will she be? For all
seven had been married to her." Jesus said to them, "Are
you not misled because you do not know the scriptures or the power
of God? When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are
given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven. As for
the dead being raised, have you not read in the Book of Moses, in
the passage about the bush, how God told him, 'I am the God of
Abraham, (the) God of Isaac, and (the) God of Jacob'? He is not
God of the dead but of the living. You are greatly misled." [MK
12:18-27]
"When you see the desolating abomination standing where he
should not (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must
flee to the mountains, (and) a person on a housetop must not go
down or enter to get anything out of his house, and a person in a
field must not return to get his cloak. Woe to pregnant women and
nursing mothers in those days. Pray that this does not happen in
winter. For those times will have tribulation such as has not been
since the beginning of God's creation until now, nor ever will be.
If the Lord had not shortened those days, no one would be saved;
but for the sake of the elect whom he chose, he did shorten the
days. If anyone says to you then, 'Look, here is the Messiah!
Look, there he is!' do not believe it. False messiahs and false
prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders in order to
mislead, if that were possible, the elect. Be watchful! I have
told it all to you beforehand." [MK 13:14-23]
When he was in Bethany reclining at table in the house of Simon
the leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of perfumed oil,
costly genuine spikenard. She broke the alabaster jar and poured
it on his head. There were some who were indignant. "Why has
there been this waste of perfumed oil? It could have been sold for
more than three hundred days' wages and the money given to the
poor." They were infuriated with her. Jesus said, "Let
her alone. Why do you make trouble for her? She has done a good
thing for me. The poor you will always have with you, and whenever
you wish you can do good to them, but you will not always have me.
She has done what she could. She has anticipated anointing my body
for burial. Amen, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed
to the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of
her." [MK 14:3-9]
Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. The veil of the
sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion
who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last he said,
"Truly this man was the Son of God!" There were also
women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene,
Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joses, and Salome.
These women had followed him when he was in Galilee and ministered
to him. There were also many other women who had come up with him
to Jerusalem. [MK 15:37-41]
During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country
in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of
Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's
greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled
with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said,
"Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit
of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of
my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your
greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the
Lord would be fulfilled." [LK 1:39-45]
"I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than
John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than
he." [LK 7:28]
A Pharisee invited him to dine with him, and he entered the
Pharisee's house and reclined at table. Now there was a sinful
woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of
the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood
behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with
her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and
anointed them with the ointment. When the Pharisee who had invited
him saw this he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet,
he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching
him, that she is a sinner." Jesus said to him in reply,
"Simon, I have something to say to you." "Tell me,
teacher," he said. "Two people were in debt to a certain
creditor; one owed five hundred days' wages and the other owed
fifty. Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for
both. Which of them will love him more?" Simon said in reply,
"The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven." He
said to him, "You have judged rightly." Then he turned
to the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? When
I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but
she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet
since the time I entered. You did not anoint my head with oil, but
she anointed my feet with ointment. So I tell you, her many sins
have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love. But the one
to whom little is forgiven, loves little." He said to her,
"Your sins are forgiven." The others at table said to
themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" But he
said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in
peace." [LK 7:36-50]
Afterward he journeyed from one town and village to another,
preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.
Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured
of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom
seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward
Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their
resources. [LK 8:1-3]
And a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years, who
(had spent her whole livelihood on doctors and) was unable to be
cured by anyone, came up behind him and touched the tassel on his
cloak. Immediately her bleeding stopped. Jesus then asked,
"Who touched me?" While all were denying it, Peter said,
"Master, the crowds are pushing and pressing in upon
you." But Jesus said, "Someone has touched me; for I
know that power has gone out from me." When the woman
realized that she had not escaped notice, she came forward
trembling. Falling down before him, she explained in the presence
of all the people why she had touched him and how she had been
healed immediately. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has
saved you; go in peace." [LK 8:43-48]
As they continued their journey he entered a village where a
woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named
Mary (who) sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
"Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself
to do the serving? Tell her to help me." The Lord said to her
in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about
many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the
better part and it will not be taken from her." [LK 10:38-42]
While [Jesus] was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed."
He replied, "Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it."
[Taken from LK 11:27-28] [Note: The above stresses that
observance of God's word is more important that a biological
relationship with Jesus and should not be considered a reproof of
his mother. Of course Jesus faithfully kept all God's
commandments, including that of honoring thy mother and father.]
He was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath. And a woman was
there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she
was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect. When Jesus
saw her, he called to her and said, "Woman, you are set free
of your infirmity." He laid his hands on her, and she at once
stood up straight and glorified God. But the leader of the
synagogue, indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath, said to
the crowd in reply, "There are six days when work should be
done. Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath
day." The Lord said to him in reply, "Hypocrites! Does
not each one of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from
the manger and lead it out for watering? This daughter of Abraham,
whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have
been set free on the sabbath day from this bondage?" When he
said this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole
crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him. [LK 13:10-17]
Again he said, "To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed (in) with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened."
[LK 13:20-21]
"Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not
light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she
finds it? And when she does find it, she calls together her
friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I
have found the coin that I lost.' In just the same way, I tell
you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one
sinner who repents." [LK 15:8-10]
"Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery, and the one who marries a woman divorced from
her husband commits adultery." [LK 16:18]
"So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that
day, a person who is on the housetop and whose belongings are in
the house must not go down to get them, and likewise a person in
the field must not return to what was left behind. Remember the
wife of Lot. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but
whoever loses it will save it. I tell you, on that night there
will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left
[that is, some will be taken to the kingdom, the others will be
left to perish].
And there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be
taken, the other left." [LK 17:30-35]
Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection,
came forward and put this question to him, saying, "Teacher,
Moses wrote for us, 'If someone's brother dies leaving a wife but
no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants
for his brother.' Now there were seven brothers; the first married
a woman but died childless. Then the second and the third married
her, and likewise all the seven died childless. Finally the woman
also died. Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be?
For all seven had been married to her." Jesus said to them,
"The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who
are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the
resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the
children of God because they are the ones who will rise. That the
dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the
bush, when he called 'Lord' the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the
living, for to him all are alive." Some of the scribes said
in reply, "Teacher, you have answered well." And they no
longer dared to ask him anything. [LK 20:27-40]
"When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, know that
its desolation is at hand. Then those in Judea must flee to the
mountains. Let those within the city escape from it, and let those
in the countryside not enter the city, for these days are the time
of punishment when all the scriptures are fulfilled. Woe to
pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days, for a terrible
calamity will come upon the earth and a wrathful judgment upon
this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken
as captives to all the Gentiles; and Jerusalem will be trampled
underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are
fulfilled." [LK 21:20-24]
After arresting him they led him away and took him into the
house of the high priest; Peter was following at a distance. They
lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and
Peter sat down with them. When a maid saw him seated in the light,
she looked intently at him and said, "This man too was with
him." But he denied it saying, "Woman, I do not know
him." [LK 22:54-57]
As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a
Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the
cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus. A large crowd
of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and
lamented him. Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of
Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for
your children, for indeed, the days are coming when people will
say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the
breasts that never nursed.' At that time people will say to the
mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!' for if
these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when
it is dry?" Now two others, both criminals, were led away
with him to be executed. [LK 23:26-32]
It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land
until three in the afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun.
Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle. Jesus cried
out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my
spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last. The
centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said,
"This man was innocent beyond doubt." When all the
people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened,
they returned home beating their breasts; but all his
acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had
followed him from Galilee and saw these events. [LK 23:44-49]
After he had taken the body down, he wrapped it in a linen
cloth and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb in which no one had yet
been buried. It was the day of preparation, and the sabbath was
about to begin. The women who had come from Galilee with him
followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in
which his body was laid in it, they returned and prepared spices
and perfumed oils. Then they rested on the sabbath according to
the commandment. [LK 23:53-56]
But at daybreak on the first day of the week they took the
spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the
stone rolled away from the tomb; but when they entered, they did
not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were puzzling over
this, behold, two men in dazzling garments appeared to them. They
were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. They said to
them, "Why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is
not here, but he has been raised. Remember what he said to you
while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed
over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the third day."
And they remembered his words. Then they returned from the tomb
and announced all these things to the eleven and to all the
others. The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother
of James; the others who accompanied them also told this to the
apostles, but their story seemed like nonsense and they did not
believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb, bent down, and
saw the burial cloths alone; then he went home amazed at what had
happened. [LK 24:1-12]
"Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they
were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body;
they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of
angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us
went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described,
but him they did not see." And he said to them, "Oh, how
foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the
prophets spoke!" [LK 24:22-25]
On the third day there was a wedding in Can a in Galilee, and
the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also
invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of
Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (And) Jesus said
to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has
not yet come." His mother said to the servers, "Do
whatever he tells you." Now there were six stone water jars
there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to
thirty gallons. Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with
water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them,
"Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So
they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had
become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the
servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the
bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves good wine first,
and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you
have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this as the
beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his
glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. [JN 2:1-11]
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her,
"Give me a drink." His disciples had gone into the town
to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you, a
Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (For Jews use
nothing in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered and said to
her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you,
'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have
given you living water." (The woman) said to him, "Sir,
you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then
can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father
Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his
children and his flocks?" Jesus answered and said to her,
"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but
whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water
I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to
eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this
water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to
draw water." Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband
and come back." The woman answered and said to him, "I
do not have a husband." Jesus answered her, "You are
right in saying, 'I do not have a husband.' For you have had five
husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you
have said is true." The woman said to him, "Sir, I can
see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this
mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in
Jerusalem." Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the
hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this
mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not
understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is
from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true
worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed
the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and
those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth." The
woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the
one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us
everything." Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is
speaking with you." At that moment his disciples returned,
and were amazed that he was talking with a woman, but still no one
said, "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you
talking with her?" The woman left her water jar and went into
the town and said to the people, "Come see a man who told me
everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah?"
They went out of the town and came to him. [JN 4:7-30]
Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman
who testified, "He told me everything I have done." [JN
4:39]
Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been
caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. They said to
him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of
committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone
such women. So what do you say?" They said this to test him,
so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus
bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But
when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to
them, "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first
to throw a stone at her." Again he bent down and wrote on the
ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with
the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then
Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are
they? Has no one condemned you?" She replied, "No one,
sir." Then Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go,
(and) from now on do not sin any more." [JN 8:3-11]
Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy. When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.
[JN 16:20-22]
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's
sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus
saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to
his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to
the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour
the disciple took her into his home. [JN 19:25-27]
But Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she
bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there,
one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had
been. And they said to her, "Woman, why are you
weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken my Lord,
and I don't know where they laid him." When she had said
this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it
was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?
Whom are you looking for?" She thought it was the gardener
and said to him, "Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where
you laid him, and I will take him." Jesus said to her,
"Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni,"
which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, "Stop holding on to
me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my
brothers and tell them, 'I am going to my Father and your Father,
to my God and your God.'" Mary of Magdala went and announced
to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and what he
told her. [JN 20:11-18]
When they entered the city they went to the upper room where
they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and
Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the
Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these devoted themselves with
one accord to prayer, together with some women, and Mary the
mother of Jesus, and his brothers. [ACTS 1:13-14] [Note: Some
ancient languages have no word for cousin (and other relatives) so
the term "brothers" may be used to refer to relatives
other than blood brothers. The use of this terminology does not
mean that Jesus had blood brothers, which of course he didn't
since Mary is an ever virgin. For more information on this topic,

Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon's portico. None of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them.
Yet more than ever, believers in the Lord, great numbers of men and women, were added to them.
[ACTS 5:12-14]
Saul, meanwhile, was trying to destroy the church; entering
house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them
over for imprisonment. [ACTS 8:3]
A man named Simon used to practice magic in the city and
astounded the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great. All
of them, from the least to the greatest, paid attention to him,
saying, "This man is the 'Power of God' that is called
'Great.'" They paid attention to him because he had astounded
them by his magic for a long time, but once they began to believe
Philip as he preached the good news about the kingdom of God and
the name of Jesus Christ, men and women alike were baptized. Even
Simon himself believed and, after being baptized, became devoted
to Philip; and when he saw the signs and mighty deeds that were
occurring, he was astounded. [ACTS 8:9-13]
Now Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the
disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for
letters to the synagogues in Damascus, that, if he should find any
men or women who belonged to the Way, he might bring them back to
Jerusalem in chains. On his journey, as he was nearing Damascus, a
light from the sky suddenly flashed around him. He fell to the
ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are
you persecuting me?" He said, "Who are you, sir?"
The reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Now
get up and go into the city and you will be told what you must
do." [ACTS 9:1-6]
The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory.
So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.
[ACTS 13:50-51]
We set sail from Troas, making a straight run for Samothrace,
and on the next day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, a
leading city in that district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We
spent some time in that city. On the sabbath we went outside the
city gate along the river where we thought there would be a place
of prayer. We sat and spoke with the women who had gathered there.
One of them, a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from
the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, listened, and the Lord
opened her heart to pay attention to what Paul was saying. After
she and her household had been baptized, she offered us an
invitation, "If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come
and stay at my home," and she prevailed on us.
[ACTS 16:11-15]
When they took the road through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they
reached Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
Following his usual custom, Paul joined them, and for three
sabbaths he entered into discussions with them from the
scriptures, expounding and demonstrating that the Messiah had to
suffer and rise from the dead, and that "This is the Messiah,
Jesus, whom I proclaim to you." Some of them were convinced
and joined Paul and Silas; so, too, a great number of Greeks who
were worshipers, and not a few of the prominent women. [ACTS 17:1-4]
The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas to Beroea during
the night. Upon arrival they went to the synagogue of the Jews.
These Jews were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, for
they received the word with all willingness and examined the
scriptures daily to determine whether these things were so. Many
of them became believers, as did not a few of the influential
Greek women and men. [ACTS 17:10-12]
When they heard about resurrection of the dead, some began to
scoff, but others said, "We should like to hear you on this
some other time." And so Paul left them. But some did join
him, and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a member of
the Court of the Areopagus, a woman named Damaris, and others with
them. [ACTS 17:32-34]
At the end of our stay we left and resumed our journey. All of
them, women and children included, escorted us out of the city,
and after kneeling on the beach to pray, we bade farewell to one
another. Then we boarded the ship, and they returned home. [ACTS
21:5-6]
"My brothers and fathers, listen to what I am about to say
to you in my defense." When they heard him addressing them in
Hebrew they became all the more quiet. And he continued, "I
am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city.
At the feet of Gamaliel I was educated strictly in our ancestral
law and was zealous for God, just as all of you are today. I
persecuted this Way to death, binding both men and women and
delivering them to prison. Even the high priest and the whole
council of elders can testify on my behalf. For from them I even
received letters to the brothers and set out for Damascus to bring
back to Jerusalem in chains for punishment those there as well. On that journey as I drew near to Damascus, about noon a
great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. I fell to the
ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you
persecuting me?' I replied, 'Who are you, sir?' And he said to me,
'I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are persecuting.'" [ACTS 22:1-8]
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and
worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed
forever. Amen. Therefore, God handed them over to degrading
passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural,
and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and
burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with
males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for
their perversity. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge
God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is
improper. They are filled with every form of wickedness, evil,
greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and
spite. They are gossips and scandalmongers and they hate God. They
are insolent, haughty, boastful, ingenious in their wickedness,
and rebellious toward their parents. They are senseless,
faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know the just decree
of God that all who practice such things deserve death, they not
only do them but give approval to those who practice them. [ROM
1:25-32]
Thus a married woman is bound by law to her living husband; but
if her husband dies, she is released from the law in respect to
her husband. [ROM 7:2]
Now in regard to the matters about which you wrote: "It is
a good thing for a man not to touch a woman," but because of
cases of immorality every man should have his own wife, and every
woman her own husband. The husband should fulfill his duty toward
his wife, and likewise the wife toward her husband. A wife does
not have authority over her own body, but rather her husband, and
similarly a husband does not have authority over his own body, but
rather his wife. Do not deprive each other, except perhaps by
mutual consent for a time, to be free for prayer, but then return
to one another, so that Satan may not tempt you through your lack
of self-control. This I say by way of concession, however, not as
a command. Indeed, I wish everyone to be as I am, but each has a
particular gift from God, one of one kind and one of another. Now
to the unmarried and to widows, I say: it is a good thing for them
to remain as they are, as I do, but if they cannot exercise
self-control they should marry, for it is better to marry than to
be on fire. To the married, however, I give this instruction (not
I, but the Lord): a wife should not separate from her husband -
and if she does separate she must either remain single or become
reconciled to her husband - and a husband should not divorce his
wife. To the rest I say (not the Lord): if any brother has a wife
who is an unbeliever, and she is willing to go on living with him,
he should not divorce her; and if any woman has a husband who is
an unbeliever, and he is willing to go on living with her, she
should not divorce her husband. For the unbelieving husband is
made holy through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy
through the brother. Otherwise your children would be unclean,
whereas in fact they are holy. If the unbeliever separates,
however, let him separate. The brother or sister is not bound in
such cases; God has called you to peace. For how do you know,
wife, whether you will save your husband; or how do you know,
husband, whether you will save your wife? [1COR 7:1-16]
Now in regard to virgins, I have no commandment from the Lord,
but I give my opinion as one who by the Lord's mercy is
trustworthy. So this is what I think best because of the present
distress: that it is a good thing for a person to remain as he is.
Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek a separation. Are you free of
a wife? Then do not look for a wife. If you marry, however, you do
not sin, nor does an unmarried woman sin if she marries; but such
people will experience affliction in their earthly life, and I
would like to spare you that. I tell you, brothers, the time is
running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having
them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not
rejoicing, those buying as not owning, those using the world as
not using it fully. For the world in its present form is passing
away. I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man
is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the
Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world,
how he may please his wife, and he is divided. An unmarried woman
or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she
may be holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other
hand, is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please
her husband. I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to
impose a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and
adherence to the Lord without distraction. If anyone thinks he is
behaving improperly toward his virgin, and if a critical moment
has come and so it has to be, let him do as he wishes. He is
committing no sin; let them get married. The one who stands firm
in his resolve, however, who is not under compulsion but has power
over his own will, and has made up his mind to keep his virgin,
will be doing well. So then, the one who marries his virgin does
well; the one who does not marry her will do better. A wife is
bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies,
she is free to be married to whomever she wishes, provided that it
be in the Lord. She is more blessed, though, in my opinion, if she
remains as she is, and I think that I too have the Spirit of God. [1COR
7:25-40]
But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man,
and a husband the head of his wife, and God the head of Christ.
Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered brings shame
upon his head. But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head
unveiled brings shame upon her head, for it is one and the same
thing as if she had had her head shaved. For if a woman does not
have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But
if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head
shaved, then she should wear a veil. A man, on the other hand,
should not cover his head, because he is the image and glory of
God, but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from
woman, but woman from man; nor was man created for woman, but
woman for man; for this reason a woman should have a sign of
authority on her head, because of the angels. Woman is not
independent of man or man of woman in the Lord. For just as woman
came from man, so man is born of woman; but all things are from
God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God
with her head unveiled? Does not nature itself teach you that if a
man wears his hair long it is a disgrace to him, whereas if a
woman has long hair it is her glory, because long hair has been
given (her) for a covering? But if anyone is inclined to be
argumentative, we do not have such a custom, nor do the churches
of God. [1COR 11:3-16]
Indeed, the spirits of prophets are under the prophets'
control, since he is not the God of disorder but of peace. As in
all the churches of the holy ones, women should keep silent in the
churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but should be
subordinate, as even the law says. But if they want to learn
anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is
improper for a woman to speak in the church. [1COR 14:32-35]
For through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus.
For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed
yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is
neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for
you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then
you are Abraham's descendant, heirs according to the promise. [GAL
3:26-29]
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born
of a woman, born under the law, to ransom those under the law, so
that we might receive adoption. As proof that you are children,
God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out,
"Abba, Father!" So you are no longer a slave but a
child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. [GAL 4:4-7]
Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not listen to
the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the
slave woman and the other by the freeborn woman. The son of the
slave woman was born naturally, the son of the freeborn through a
promise. Now this is an allegory. These women represent two
covenants. One was from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery;
this is Hagar. Hagar represents Sinai, a mountain in Arabia; it
corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery along
with her children. But the Jerusalem above is freeborn, and she is
our mother. For it is written: "Rejoice, you barren one who
bore no children; break forth and shout, you who were not in
labor; for more numerous are the children of the deserted one than
of her who has a husband." Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are
children of the promise. But just as then the child of the flesh
persecuted the child of the spirit, it is the same now. But what
does the scripture say? "Drive out the slave woman and her
son! For the son of the slave woman shall not share the
inheritance with the son" of the freeborn. Therefore,
brothers, we are children not of the slave woman but of the
freeborn woman. [GAL 4:21-31]
Concerning times and seasons, brothers, you have no need for
anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well
that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. When
people are saying, "Peace and security," then sudden
disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and
they will not escape. But you, brothers, are not in
darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. For all of
you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not
of the night or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the
rest do, but let us stay alert and sober. [1THES 5:1-6]
It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray,
lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument. Similarly,
(too,) women should adorn themselves with proper conduct, with
modesty and self-control, not with braided hairstyles and gold
ornaments, or pearls, or expensive clothes, but rather, as befits
women who profess reverence for God, with good deeds. A woman must
receive instruction silently and under complete control. I do not
permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. She must
be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. Further, Adam was
not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed. But she
will be saved through motherhood, provided women persevere in
faith and love and holiness, with self-control. [1TM 2:8-15]
Women, similarly, should be dignified, not slanderers, but
temperate and faithful in everything. [1TM 3:11]
Do not rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as a father.
Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger
women as sisters with complete purity. Honor widows who are truly
widows. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let these
first learn to perform their religious duty to their own family
and to make recompense to their parents, for this is pleasing to
God. The real widow, who is all alone, has set her hope on God and
continues in supplications and prayers night and day. But the one
who is self-indulgent is dead while she lives. Command this, so
that they may be irreproachable. And whoever does not provide for
relatives and especially family members has denied the faith and
is worse than an unbeliever. Let a widow be enrolled if she is not
less than sixty years old, married only once, with a reputation
for good works, namely, that she has raised children, practiced
hospitality, washed the feet of the holy ones, helped those in
distress, involved herself in every good work. But exclude younger
widows, for when their sensuality estranges them from Christ, they
want to marry and will incur condemnation for breaking their first
pledge. And furthermore, they learn to be idlers, going about from
house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies as
well, talking about things that ought not to be mentioned. So I
would like younger widows to marry, have children, and manage a
home, so as to give the adversary no pretext for maligning us. For
some have already turned away to follow Satan. If any woman
believer has widowed relatives, she must assist them; the church
is not to be burdened, so that it will be able to help those who
are truly widows. [1TM 5:1-16]
But understand this: there will be terrifying times in the last
days. People will be self-centered and lovers of money, proud,
haughty, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful,
irreligious, callous, implacable, slanderous, licentious, brutal,
hating what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of
pleasure rather than lovers of God, as they make a pretense of
religion but deny its power. Reject them. For some of these slip
into homes and make captives of women weighed down by sins, led by
various desires, always trying to learn but never able to reach a
knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses,
so they also oppose the truth - people of depraved mind,
unqualified in the faith. But they will not make further progress,
for their foolishness will be plain to all, as it was with those
two. [2TM 3:1-9]
As for yourself, you must say what is consistent with sound
doctrine, namely, that older men should be temperate, dignified,
self-controlled, sound in faith, love, and endurance. Similarly,
older women should be reverent in their behavior, not slanderers,
not addicted to drink, teaching what is good, so that they may
train younger women to love their husbands and children, to be
self-controlled, chaste, good homemakers, under the control of
their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited. [TI
2:1-5]
Likewise, you wives should be subordinate to your husbands so
that, even if some disobey the word, they may be won over without
a word by their wives' conduct when they observe your reverent and
chaste behavior. Your adornment should not be an external one:
braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine
clothes, but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed
in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which
is precious in the sight of God. For this is also how the holy
women who hoped in God once used to adorn themselves and were
subordinate to their husbands; thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling
him "lord." You are her children when you do what is
good and fear no intimidation. Likewise, you husbands should live
with your wives in understanding, showing honor to the weaker
female sex, since we are joint heirs of the gift of life, so that
your prayers may not be hindered. [1PT 3:1-7]
"To the angel of the church in Thyatira, write this: 'The Son of God, whose eyes are like a fiery flame and
whose feet are like polished brass, says this: "I know your
works, your love, faith, service, and endurance, and that your
last works are greater than the first. Yet I hold this against
you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a
prophetess, who teaches and misleads my servants to play the
harlot and to eat food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time
to repent, but she refuses to repent of her harlotry. So I will
cast her on a sickbed and plunge those who commit adultery with
her into intense suffering unless they repent of her works. I will
also put her children to death. Thus shall all the churches come
to know that I am the searcher of hearts and minds and that I will
give each of you what your works deserve."'" [RV 2:18-23]
During that time these people will seek death but will not find
it, and they will long to die but death will escape them. The
appearance of the locusts was like that of horses ready for
battle. On their heads they wore what looked like crowns of gold;
their faces were like human faces, and they had hair like women's
hair. Their teeth were like lions' teeth, and they had chests like
iron breastplates. The sound of their wings was like the sound of
many horse-drawn chariots racing into battle. [RV 9:6-9]
A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve
stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored
to give birth. Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a
huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads
were seven diadems. Its tail swept away a third of the stars in
the sky and hurled them down to the earth. Then the dragon stood
before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she
gave birth. She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to
rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to
God and his throne. The woman herself fled into the desert where
she had a place prepared by God, that there she might be taken
care of for twelve hundred and sixty days. Then war broke out in
heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The
dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and
there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon,
the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who
deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels
were thrown down with it. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
"Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our
God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser of our
brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and
night. They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word
of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death.
Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them. But
woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in
great fury, for he knows he has but a short time." When the
dragon saw that it had been thrown down to the earth, it pursued
the woman who had given birth to the male child. But the woman was
given the two wings of the great eagle, so that she could fly to
her place in the desert, where, far from the serpent, she was
taken care of for a year, two years, and a half-year. The serpent,
however, spewed a torrent of water out of his mouth after the
woman to sweep her away with the current. But the earth helped the
woman and opened its mouth and swallowed the flood that the dragon
spewed out of its mouth. Then the dragon became angry with the
woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring,
those who keep God's commandments and bear witness to Jesus. It
took its position on the sand of the sea. [RV 12:1-18]
Then I looked and there was the Lamb standing on Mount Zion,
and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand who had his name
and his Father's name written on their foreheads. I heard a sound
from heaven like the sound of rushing water or a loud peal of
thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their
harps. They were singing (what seemed to be) a new hymn before the
throne, before the four living creatures and the elders. No one
could learn this hymn except the hundred and forty-four thousand
who had been ransomed from the earth. These are they who were not
defiled with women; they are virgins and these are the ones who
follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been ransomed as the
firstfruits of the human race for God and the Lamb. On their lips
no deceit has been found; they are unblemished. [RV 14:1-5]
Then one of the seven angels who were holding the seven bowls
came and said to me, "Come here. I will show you the judgment
on the great harlot who lives near the many waters. The kings of
the earth have had intercourse with her, and the inhabitants of
the earth became drunk on the wine of her harlotry." Then he
carried me away in spirit to a deserted place where I saw a woman
seated on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names,
with seven heads and ten horns. The woman was wearing purple and
scarlet and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls. She
held in her hand a gold cup that was filled with the abominable
and sordid deeds of her harlotry. On her forehead was written a
name, which is a mystery, "Babylon the great, the mother of
harlots and of the abominations of the earth." I saw that the
woman was drunk on the blood of the holy ones and on the blood of
the witnesses to Jesus. Meaning of the Beast and Harlot . When I
saw her I was greatly amazed. The angel said to me, "Why are
you amazed? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of
the beast that carries her, the beast with the seven heads and the
ten horns. The beast that you saw existed once but now exists no
longer. It will come up from the abyss and is headed for
destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not
been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world
shall be amazed when they see the beast, because it existed once
but exists no longer, and yet it will come again. Here is a clue
for one who has wisdom. The seven heads represent seven hills upon
which the woman sits. They also represent seven kings: five have
already fallen, one still lives, and the last has not yet come,
and when he comes he must remain only a short while. The beast
that existed once but exists no longer is an eighth king, but
really belongs to the seven and is headed for destruction. The ten
horns that you saw represent ten kings who have not yet been
crowned; they will receive royal authority along with the beast
for one hour. They are of one mind and will give their power and
authority to the beast. They will fight with the Lamb, but the
Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and king of kings,
and those with him are called, chosen, and faithful." Then he
said to me, "The waters that you saw where the harlot lives
represent large numbers of peoples, nations, and tongues. The ten
horns that you saw and the beast will hate the harlot; they will
leave her desolate and naked; they will eat her flesh and consume
her with fire. For God has put it into their minds to carry out
his purpose and to make them come to an agreement to give their
kingdom to the beast until the words of God are accomplished. The
woman whom you saw represents the great city that has sovereignty
over the kings of the earth." [RV 17:1-18]
