When the girl's parents left the bedroom and
closed the door behind them, Tobiah arose from bed and said to his
wife, "My love, get up. Let us pray and beg our Lord to have
mercy on us and to grant us deliverance." [TOBIT 8:4]
The maid went out and told the girl's parents
that Tobiah was alive, and that there was nothing wrong. Then
Raguel praised the God of heaven in these
words: "Blessed are you, O God, with every holy and pure
blessing! Let all your chosen ones praise you; let them
bless you forever! Blessed are you, who have made me
glad; what I feared did not happen. Rather you have
dealt with us according to your great mercy. Blessed are you,
for you were merciful toward two only children. Grant
them, Master, mercy and deliverance, and bring their lives to
fulfillment with happiness and mercy." [TOBIT 8:14-17]
Then he kissed his daughter Sarah and said to
her: "My daughter, honor your father-in-law and your
mother-in-law, because from now on they are as much your parents
as the ones who brought you into the world. Go in peace, my
daughter; let me hear good reports about you as long as I
live." Finally he said good-bye to them and sent them away. [TOBIT
10:12]
Accordingly Jonathan went up to Jerusalem and
read the letter to all the people. The men in the citadel were
struck with fear when they heard that the king had given him
authority to gather an army. They released the hostages to
Jonathan, and he gave them back to their parents. Thereafter
Jonathan dwelt in Jerusalem, and began to build and restore the
city. [1MACC 10:7-10]
Timothy himself fell into the hands of the men
under Dositheus and Sosipater; but with great cunning, he asked
them to spare his life and let him go, because he had in his power
the parents and relatives of many of them, and could make these
suffer. [2MACC 12:24]
Grandchildren are the crown of old men, and the
glory of children is their parentage. [PROV 17:6]
To be a fool's parent is grief for a man; the
father of a numskull has no joy. [PROV 17:21]
Home and possessions are an inheritance from
parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD. [PROV 19:14]
I had hardly left them when I found him whom my
heart loves. I took hold of him and would not let him go till I
should bring him to the home of my mother, to the room of my
parent. [SONG 3:4]
One alone is my dove, my perfect one, her
mother's chosen, the dear one of her parent. The
daughters saw her and declared her fortunate, the queens and
concubines, and they sang her praises; Who is this that comes
forth like the dawn, as beautiful as the moon, as resplendent
as the sun, as awe-inspiring as bannered troops? [SONG 6:9-10]
Who is this coming up from the desert, leaning
upon her lover? Under the apple tree I awakened you; it was
there that your mother conceived you, it was there that your
parent conceived. [SONG 8:5]
For children born of lawless unions give
evidence of the wickedness of their parents, when they are
examined. [WISDOM 4:6]
These merciless murderers of children, and
parents who took with their own hands defenseless lives, You
willed to destroy by the hands of our fathers, that the land that
is dearest of all to you might receive a worthy colony of
God's children. [Taken from WISDOM 12:5-7]
He who fears the LORD honors his father, and
serves his parents as rulers. [SIRACH 3:7]
With your whole heart honor your father; your mother's birthpangs forget not.
Remember, of these parents you were born; what can you give them for all they gave you?
[SIRACH 7:27-28]
Then I said to their children in the desert: Do not observe the statutes of your parents or keep their ordinances; do not defile yourselves with their idols. I am the LORD, your God: observe my statutes and be careful to keep my ordinances; keep holy my sabbaths, as a sign between me and you to show that I am the LORD, your God.
[EZEK 20:18-20]
In Babylon there lived a man named Joakim, who married a very beautiful and God-fearing woman, Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah; her pious parents had trained their daughter according to the law of Moses. [DAN
13:1-3]
"But beware of people, for they will hand you
over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will
be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before
them and the pagans. When they hand you over, do not worry about
how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at
that moment what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will
hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children
will rise up against parents and have them put to death. You will
be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end
will be saved." [MT 10:17-22]
"Watch out for yourselves. They will hand
you over to the courts. You will be beaten in synagogues. You will
be arraigned before governors and kings because of me, as a
witness before them. But the gospel must first be preached to all
nations. When they lead you away and hand you over, do not worry
beforehand about what you are to say. But say whatever will be
given to you at that hour. For it will not be you who are speaking
but the Holy Spirit. Brother will hand over brother to death, and
the father his child; children will rise up against parents and
have them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my
name. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved." [MK 13:9-13]
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was
Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the
consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had
been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see
death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord. He came in the
Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child
Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took
him into his arms and blessed God, saying: "Now, Master, you
may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for
my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of
all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and
glory for your people Israel." The child's father and mother
were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them
and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is destined
for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that
will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so
that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." [LK 2:25-35]
Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the
feast of Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up
according to festival custom. After they had completed its days,
as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in
Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Thinking that he was
in the caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him among
their relatives and acquaintances, but not finding him, they
returned to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found
him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening
to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were
astounded at his understanding and his answers. When his parents
saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him,
"Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have
been looking for you with great anxiety." And he said to
them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I
must be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand
what he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth,
and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in
her heart. [LK 2:41-51]
While he was still speaking, someone from the
synagogue official's house arrived and said, "Your daughter
is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer." On hearing
this, Jesus answered him, "Do not be afraid; just have faith
and she will be saved." When he arrived at the house he
allowed no one to enter with him except Peter and John and James,
and the child's father and mother. All were weeping and mourning
for her, when he said, "Do not weep any longer, for she is
not dead, but sleeping." And they ridiculed him, because they
knew that she was dead. But he took her by the hand and called to
her, "Child, arise!" Her breath returned and she
immediately arose. He then directed that she should be given
something to eat. Her parents were astounded, and he instructed
them to tell no one what had happened. [LK 8:49-56]
Then Peter said, "We have given up our
possessions and followed you." He said to them, "Amen, I
say to you, there is no one who has given up house or wife or
brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God
who will not receive (back) an overabundant return in this present
age and eternal life in the age to come."
[LK 18:28-30]
"Before all this happens, however, they
will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the
synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings
and governors because of my name. It will lead to your giving
testimony. Remember, you are not to prepare your defense
beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that
all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You
will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and
friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated
by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be
destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives." [LK
21:12-19]
As he passed by he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
Jesus answered, "Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him."
[JN 9:1-3]
So some of the Pharisees said, "This man is
not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath." (But)
others said, "How can a sinful man do such signs?" And
there was a division among them. So they said to the blind man
again, "What do you have to say about him, since he opened
your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet." Now the
Jews did not believe that he had been blind and gained his sight
until they summoned the parents of the one who had gained his
sight. They asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was
born blind? How does he now see?" His parents answered and
said, "We know that this is our son and that he was born
blind. We do not know how he sees now, nor do we know who opened
his eyes. Ask him, he is of age; he can speak for him self."
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for
the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged him as the
Messiah, he would be expelled from the synagogue. For this reason
his parents said, "He is of age; question him." So a
second time they called the man who had been blind and said to
him, "Give God the praise! We know that this man is a
sinner." He replied, "If he is a sinner, I do not know.
One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see." So
they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open
your eyes?" He answered them, "I told you already and
you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want
to become his disciples, too?" They ridiculed him and said,
"You are that man's disciple; we are disciples of Moses! We
know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this one is
from." The man answered and said to them, "This is what
is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he
opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but
if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him. It is
unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born
blind. If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do
anything." [JN 9:16-33]
And since they did not see fit to acknowledge
God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is
improper. They are filled with every form of wickedness, evil,
greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and
spite. They are gossips and scandalmongers and they hate God. They
are insolent, haughty, boastful, ingenious in their wickedness,
and rebellious toward their parents. They are senseless,
faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know the just decree
of God that all who practice such things deserve death, they not
only do them but give approval to those who practice them. [ROM 1:28-32]
Now I am ready to come to you this third time.
And I will not be a burden, for I want not what is yours, but you.
Children ought not to save for their parents, but parents for
their children. [2COR 12:14]
Children, obey your parents (in the Lord), for
this is right. "Honor your father and mother." This is
the first commandment with a promise, "that it may go well
with you and that you may have a long life on earth."
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up
with the training and instruction of the Lord. [EPH 6:1-4]
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord.
Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged. [COL
3:20-21]
Honor widows who are truly widows. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let these first learn to perform their religious duty to their own family and to make recompense to their parents, for this is pleasing to God.
[1TM 5:3-4]
But understand this: there will be terrifying
times in the last days. People will be self-centered and lovers of
money, proud, haughty, abusive, disobedient to their parents,
ungrateful, irreligious, callous, implacable, slanderous,
licentious, brutal, hating what is good, traitors, reckless,
conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, as they
make a pretense of religion but deny its power. Reject them. [2TM
3:1-5]
By faith Moses was hidden by his parents for
three months after his birth, because they saw that he was a
beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.
