To the woman he said: "I will intensify the pangs of your
childbearing; in pain shall you bring forth children. Yet your
urge shall be for your husband, and he shall be your master."
[GEN 3:16] [Note: This passage is traditionally translated as
"To the woman also he said: I will multiply thy sorrows, and
thy conceptions: in sorrow shalt thou bring forth children, and
thou shalt be under thy husband's power, and he shall have
dominion over thee."]
All the able-bodied men of the town agreed with Hamor and his
son Shechem, and all the males, including every able-bodied man in
the community, were circumcised. On the third day, while they were
still in pain, Dinah's full brothers Simeon and Levi, two of
Jacob's sons, took their swords, advanced against the city without
any trouble, and massacred all the males. [GEN 34:24-25]
Jabez was the most distinguished of the brothers. His mother
had named him Jabez, saying, "I bore him with pain." Jabez prayed to the God of Israel: "Oh, that you may truly
bless me and extend my boundaries! Help me and make me free of
misfortune, without pain!" And God granted his prayer.
[1CHRON 4:9-10]
When there is famine in the land, when there is pestilence, or
blight, or mildew, or locusts, or caterpillars; when their enemies
besiege them at any of their gates; whenever there is a plague or
sickness of any kind; when any Israelite of all your people offers
a prayer or petition of any kind, and in awareness of his
affliction and pain, stretches out his hands toward this temple,
listen from your heavenly dwelling place, and forgive. Knowing his
heart, render to everyone according to his conduct, for you alone
know the hearts of men.
[2CHRON 6:28-30]
He received a letter from the prophet Elijah with this message:
"Thus says the LORD, the God of your ancestor David: 'Because
you have not followed the path of your father Jehoshaphat, nor of
Asa, king of Judah, but instead have walked in the way of the
kings of Israel and have led Judah and the inhabitants of
Jerusalem into idolatry, as did the house of Ahab, and also
because you have murdered your brothers of your father's house who
were better than you, the LORD will strike your people, your
children, your wives, and all that is yours with a great plague;
and you shall have severe pains from a disease in your bowels,
while your bowels issue forth because of the disease, day after
day.'" Then the LORD stirred up against Jehoram the animosity
of the Philistines and of the Arabs who bordered on the
Ethiopians. They came up against Judah, invaded it, and carried
away all the wealth found in the king's palace, along with his
sons and his wives; there was left to him only one son, Jehoahaz,
his youngest. After these events, the LORD afflicted him with an
incurable disease of the bowels. As time went on until a period of
two years had elapsed, his bowels issued forth because of the
disease and he died in great pain. His people did not made a pyre
for him like that of his fathers. He was thirty-two years old when
he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. He
departed unloved and was buried in the City of David, but not in
the tombs of the kings. [2CHRON 21:12-20]
Alcimus spared no pains to maintain his high priesthood, and all those who were disturbing their people gathered about him. They took possession of the land of Judah and caused great distress in Israel.
[1MACC 7:21-22]
Whoever saw the appearance of the high priest was pierced to the heart, for the changed color of his face manifested the anguish of his soul.
The terror and bodily trembling that had come over the man clearly showed those who saw him the pain that lodged in his heart.
[2MACC 3:16-17]
When he was about to die under the blows, he groaned and said: "The Lord in his holy knowledge knows full well that, although I could have escaped death, I am not only enduring terrible pain in my body from this scourging, but also suffering it with joy in my soul because of my devotion to him."
This is how he died, leaving in his death a model of courage and an unforgettable example of virtue not only for the young but for the whole nation.
[Taken from 2MACC 6:30-31]
My brothers, after enduring brief pain, have drunk of never-failing life, under God's covenant, but you, by the judgment of God, shall receive just punishments for your arrogance. Like my brothers, I offer up my body and my life for our ancestral laws, imploring God to show mercy soon to our nation, and by afflictions and blows to make you confess that he alone is God.
[2MACC 7:36-37]
Overcome with anger, he planned to make the Jews suffer for the
injury done by those who had put him to flight. Therefore he
ordered his charioteer to drive without stopping until he finished
the journey. Yet the condemnation of Heaven rode with him, since
he said in his arrogance, "I will make Jerusalem the common
graveyard of the Jews as soon as I arrive there." So the
all-seeing Lord, the God of Israel, struck him down with an unseen
but incurable blow; for scarcely had he uttered those words when
he was seized with excruciating pains in his bowels and sharp
internal torment, a fit punishment for him who had tortured the
bowels of others with many barbarous torments. Far from giving up
his insolence, he was all the more filled with arrogance.
Breathing fire in his rage against the Jews, he gave orders to
drive even faster. As a result he hurtled from the dashing
chariot, and every part of his body was racked by the violent
fall. [2MACC 9:4-7]
Shortly before, he had thought that he could reach the stars of
heaven, and now, no one could endure to transport the man because
of this intolerable stench. At last, broken in spirit, he began to
give up his excessive arrogance, and to gain some understanding,
under the scourge of God, for he was racked with pain unceasingly.
When he could no longer bear his own stench, he said, "It is
right to be subject to God, and not to think one's mortal self
divine." [2MACC 9:10-12]
Even that God would decide to crush me, that he would put forth
his hand and cut me off! Then I should still have consolation and
could exult through unremitting pain, because I have not
transgressed the commands of the Holy One. [JOB 6:9-10]
Am I the sea, or a monster of the deep, that you place a watch
over me? Why have you set me up as an object of attack; or why
should I be a target for you? When I say, "My bed shall
comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint," Then you
affright me with dreams and with visions terrify me, So that I
should prefer choking and death rather than my pains. [JOB 7:12-15]
If I say: I will forget my complaining, I will lay aside my
sadness and be of good cheer, Then I am in dread of all my pains;
I know that you will not hold me innocent. [JOB 9:27-28]
Only his own flesh pains him, and his soul grieves for him.
[JOB 14:22]
If I speak, this pain I have will not be checked; if I leave
off, it will not depart from me. [JOB 16:6]
My heart shudders, my strength forsakes me; the very light of
my eyes has failed. Friends and companions shun my pain; my
neighbors stand far off. Those who seek my life lay snares for me;
they seek my misfortune, they speak of ruin; they plot treachery
all the day. [PS 38:11-13]
I am very near to falling; my pain is with me always. I
acknowledge my guilt and grieve over my sin. But many are my foes
without cause, a multitude of enemies without reason, Repaying me
evil for good, harassing me for pursuing good. Forsake me not, O
LORD; my God, be not far from me! Come quickly to help me, my Lord
and my salvation! [PS 38:18-23]
Awake! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Rise up! Do not reject us
forever! Why do you hide your face; why forget our pain and
misery? We are bowed down to the ground; our bodies are pressed to
the earth. Rise up, help us! Redeem us as your love demands. [PS
44:24-27]
Make their own table a snare for them, a trap for their
friends. Make their eyes so dim they cannot see; keep their backs
ever feeble. Pour out your wrath upon them; let the fury of your
anger overtake them. Make their camp desolate, with none to dwell
in their tents. For they pursued the one you struck, added to the
pain of the one you wounded. Add that to their crimes; let them
not attain to your reward. Strike them from the book of the
living; do not count them among the just! But I am afflicted and
in pain; let your saving help protect me, God, That I may praise
God's name in song and glorify it with thanksgiving. [PS 69:23-31]
But, as for me, I lost my balance; my feet all but slipped,
Because I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of
the wicked. For they suffer no pain; their bodies are healthy and
sleek. They are free of the burdens of life; they are not
afflicted like others. Thus pride adorns them as a necklace;
violence clothes them as a robe. Out of their stupidity comes sin;
evil thoughts flood their hearts. [PS 73:2-7]
I weep in bitter pain; in accord with your word to strengthen me.
Lead me from the way of deceit; favor me with your teaching. [PS
119:28-29]
Those who linger long over wine, those who engage in trials of
blended wine. Look not on the wine when it is red, when it
sparkles in the glass. It goes down smoothly; but in the end it
bites like a serpent, or like a poisonous adder. Your eyes behold
strange sights, and your heart utters disordered thoughts; You are
like one now lying in the depths of the sea, now sprawled at the
top of the mast. "They struck me, but it pained me not; They
beat me, but I felt it not; When shall I awake to seek wine once
again?" [PROV 23:30-35]
But when I turned to all the works that my hands had wrought,
and to the toil at which I had taken such pains, behold! all was
vanity and a chase after wind, with nothing gained under the sun.
[ECCL 2:11]
The conversation of the wicked is offensive, their laughter is
wanton guilt. Their oath-filled talk makes the hair stand on end,
their brawls make one stop one's ears. Wrangling among the haughty
ends in bloodshed, their cursing is painful to hear. [SIRACH 27:13-15]
The trap seizes those who rejoice in pitfalls, and pain will consume them before they die;
Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight.
[SIRACH 27:29-30]
Painful things to a sensitive man are abuse at home and insults
from his creditors. [SIRACH 29:28]
God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man
should not neglect; Was not the water sweetened by a twig that men
might learn his power? He endows men with the knowledge to glory
in his mighty works, Through which the doctor eases pain and the
druggist prepares his medicines; Thus God's creative work
continues without cease in its efficacy on the surface of the
earth. [SIRACH 38:4-8]
O LORD, oppressed by your punishment, we cried out in anguish
under your chastising. As a woman about to give birth writhes and
cries out in her pains, so were we in your presence, O LORD. We
conceived and writhed in pain, giving birth to wind; Salvation we
have not achieved for the earth, the inhabitants of the world
cannot bring it forth. But your dead shall live, their corpses
shall rise; awake and sing, you who lie in the dust. For your dew
is a dew of light, and the land of shades gives birth. [ISA 26:16-19]
Who among you fears the LORD, heeds his servant's voice, And
walks in darkness without any light, Trusting in the name of the
LORD and relying on his God? All of you kindle flames and carry
about you fiery darts; Walk by the light of your own fire and by
the flares you have burnt! This is your fate from my hand: you
shall lie down in a place of pain. [ISA 50:10-11]
Before she comes to labor, she gives birth; Before the pains
come upon her, she safely delivers a male child. Who ever heard of
such a thing, or saw the like? Can a country be brought forth in
one day, or a nation be born in a single moment? Yet Zion is
scarcely in labor when she gives birth to her children. [ISA 66:7-8]
Why is my pain continuous, my wound incurable, refusing to be
healed? You have indeed become for me a treacherous brook, whose
waters do not abide! Thus the LORD answered me: If you repent, so
that I restore you, in my presence you shall stand; If you bring
forth the precious without the vile, you shall be my mouthpiece.
Then it shall be they who turn to you, and you shall not turn to
them; And I will make you toward this people a solid wall of
brass. Though they fight against you, they shall not prevail, For
I am with you, to deliver and rescue you, says the LORD. I will
free you from the hand of the wicked, and rescue you from the
grasp of the violent. [Taken from JER 15:18-21]
Why did I come forth from the womb, to see sorrow and pain, to
end my days in shame? [JER 20:18]
You who dwell on Lebanon, who nest in the cedars, How you shall
groan when pains come upon you, like the pangs of a woman in
travail! [JER 22:23]
Why cry out over your wound? your pain is without relief.
Because of your great guilt, your numerous sins, I have done this
to you. Yet all who devour you shall be devoured, all your enemies
shall go into exile. All who plunder you shall be plundered, all
who pillage you I will hand over to pillage. For I will restore
you to health; of your wounds I will heal you, says the LORD. [Taken
from JER 30:15-17]
Thus says the LORD, God of Israel, to you, Baruch, because you
said, "Alas! the LORD adds grief to my pain; I am weary from
groaning, and can find no rest": say this to him, says the
LORD: What I have built, I am tearing down; what I have planted, I
am uprooting: even the whole land. And do you seek great things
for yourself? Seek them not! I am bringing evil on all mankind,
says the LORD, but your life I will leave you as booty, wherever
you may go. [JER 45:2-5]
"Come, all you who pass by the way, look and see Whether
there is any suffering like my suffering, which has been dealt me
When the LORD afflicted me on the day of his blazing wrath. From
on high he sent fire down into my very frame; He spread a net for
my feet, and overthrew me. He left me desolate, in pain all the
day. He has kept watch over my sins; by his hand they have been
plaited: They have settled about my neck, he has brought my
strength to its knees; The Lord has delivered me into their grip,
I am unable to rise." [LAM 1:12-14]
Now the king's men who had thrown them in continued to stoke
the furnace with brimstone, pitch, tow, and faggots. The flames
rose forty-nine cubits above the furnace, and spread out, burning
the Chaldeans nearby. But the angel of the Lord went down into the
furnace with Azariah and his companions, drove the fiery flames
out of the furnace, and made the inside of the furnace as though a
dew-laden breeze were blowing through it. The fire in no way
touched them or caused them pain or harm. [DAN 3:46-50]
Now why do you cry out so? Are you without a king? Or has your
counselor perished, That you are seized with pains like a woman in
travail? Writhe in pain, grow faint, O daughter Zion, like a woman in
travail; For now shall you go forth from the city and dwell in the
fields; To Babylon shall you go, there shall you be rescued. There
shall the LORD redeem you from the hand of your enemies. [MICAH 4:9-10]
[Jesus'] fame spread to all of Syria, and they brought to him all
who were sick with various diseases and racked with pain, those
who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytics, and he cured them. [Taken
from MT 4:24]
Jesus said to them in reply, "See that no one deceives
you. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Messiah,'
and they will deceive many. You will hear of wars and reports of
wars; see that you are not alarmed, for these things must happen,
but it will not yet be the end. Nation will rise against nation,
and kingdom against kingdom; there will be famines and earthquakes
from place to place. All these are the beginning of the labor
pains. Then they will hand you over to persecution, and they will
kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name. And
then many will be led into sin; they will betray and hate one
another. Many false prophets will arise and deceive many; and
because of the increase of evildoing, the love of many will grow
cold. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. And
this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world
as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come." [MT
24:4-14]
Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one deceives you.
Many will come in my name saying, 'I am he,' and they will deceive
many. When you hear of wars and reports of wars do not be alarmed;
such things must happen, but it will not yet be the end. Nation
will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will
be earthquakes from place to place and there will be famines.
These are the beginnings of the labor pains. Watch out for
yourselves. They will hand you over to the courts. You will be
beaten in synagogues. You will be arraigned before governors and
kings because of me, as a witness before them. But the gospel must
first be preached to all nations." [MK 13:5-10]
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them,
"Are you discussing with one another what I said, 'A little
while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you
will see me'? Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn,
while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will
become joy. When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because
her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she
no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has
been born into the world. So you also are now in anguish. But I
will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will
take your joy away from you." [JN 16:19-22]
I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as
nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For
creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the
children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of
its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope
that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption
and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know
that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and
not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the
Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption,
the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope
that sees for itself is not hope. For who hopes for what one sees?
But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance. In
the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for
we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself
intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches
hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it
intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will. [ROM 8:18-27]
For I decided not to come to you again in painful
circumstances. For if I inflict pain upon you, then who is there
to cheer me except the one pained by me? And I wrote as I did so
that when I came I might not be pained by those in whom I should
have rejoiced, confident about all of you that my joy is that of
all of you. For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I
wrote to you with many tears, not that you might be pained but
that you might know the abundant love I have for you. If anyone
has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure
(not to exaggerate) to all of you. This punishment by the majority
is enough for such a person, so that on the contrary you should
forgive and encourage him instead, or else the person may be
overwhelmed by excessive pain. Therefore, I urge you to reaffirm
your love for him. For this is why I wrote, to know your proven
character, whether you were obedient in everything. Whomever you
forgive anything, so do I. For indeed what I have forgiven, if I
have forgiven anything, has been for you in the presence of
Christ, so that we might not be taken advantage of by Satan, for
we are not unaware of his purposes. [2COR 2:1-11]
For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will
come like a thief at night. When people are saying, "Peace
and security," then sudden disaster comes upon them, like
labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But
you, brothers, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you
like a thief. For all of you are children of the light and
children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness.
Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert
and sober. Those who sleep go to sleep at night, and those who are
drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be
sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet
that is hope for salvation. For God did not destine us for wrath,
but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for
us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live together
with him. Therefore, encourage one another and build one another
up, as indeed you do. [1THES 5:2-11]
Whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the
sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the religious teaching is
conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid disposition for
arguments and verbal disputes. From these come envy, rivalry,
insults, evil suspicions, and mutual friction among people with
corrupted minds, who are deprived of the truth, supposing religion
to be a means of gain. Indeed, religion with contentment is a
great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, just as we
shall not be able to take anything out of it. If we have food and
clothing, we shall be content with that. Those who want to be rich
are falling into temptation and into a trap and into many foolish
and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction.
For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in
their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced
themselves with many pains. [1TM 6:3-10]
Besides this, we have had our earthly fathers to discipline us,
and we respected them. Should we not (then) submit all the more to
the Father of spirits and live? They disciplined us for a short
time as seemed right to them, but he does so for our benefit, in
order that we may share his holiness. At the time, all discipline
seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the
peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it. So
strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight
paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be dislocated but
healed. [HEB 12:9-13]
For whenever anyone bears the pain of unjust suffering because of consciousness of God, that is a grace.
But what credit is there if you are patient when beaten for doing wrong? But if you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God.
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps.
[1PT 2:19-21]
A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve
stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored
to give birth. Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a
huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads
were seven diadems. Its tail swept away a third of the stars in
the sky and hurled them down to the earth. Then the dragon stood
before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she
gave birth. She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to
rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to
God and his throne. The woman herself fled into the desert where
she had a place prepared by God, that there she might be taken
care of for twelve hundred and sixty days. [RV 12:1-6]
The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast.
Its kingdom was plunged into darkness, and people bit their
tongues in pain and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and
sores. But they did not repent of their works. [RV 16:10-11]
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and
the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also
saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from
God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud
voice from the throne saying, "Behold, God's dwelling is with
the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his
people and God himself will always be with them (as their God). He
will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more
death or mourning, wailing or pain, (for) the old order has passed
away." The one who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I
make all things new." Then he said, "Write these words
down, for they are trustworthy and true." [RV 21:1-5]
