Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands
on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said,
"Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for
the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." After he
placed his hands on them, he went away. [MT 19:13-15]
Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all those engaged in
selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.
And he said to them, "It is written: 'My house shall be a house of prayer,'
but you are making it a den of thieves."
[MT 21:12-13]
When he was going back to the city in the morning, he was
hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went over to it, but
found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, "May no
fruit ever come from you again." And immediately the fig tree
withered. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed and said,
"How was it that the fig tree withered immediately?"
Jesus said to them in reply, "Amen, I say to you, if you have
faith and do not waver, not only will you do what has been done to
the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be lifted up
and thrown into the sea,' it will be done. Whatever you ask for in
prayer with faith, you will receive." [MT 21:18-22]
[Jesus said,] "When you see the desolating abomination spoken of through
Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place (let the reader
understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, a
person on the housetop must not go down to get things out of his
house, a person in the field must not return to get his cloak. Woe
to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days. Pray that
your flight not be in winter or on the sabbath, for at that time
there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the
beginning of the world until now, nor ever will be. And if those
days had not been shortened, no one would be saved; but for the
sake of the elect they will be shortened." [Taken from MT 24:15-22]
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he
said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and
pray." He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and
began to feel sorrow and distress. Then he said to them, "My
soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with
me." He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer,
saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from
me; yet, not as I will, but as you will." When he returned to
his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, "So you
could not keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you
may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is
weak." Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, "My
Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my
drinking it, your will be done!" Then he returned once more
and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open. He
left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the
same thing again. Then he returned to his disciples and said to
them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold,
the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to
sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand." [MT
26:36-46]
Rising very early before dawn, [Jesus] left and went off to a
deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him
pursued him and on finding him said, "Everyone is looking for
you." He told them, "Let us go on to the nearby villages
that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come."
So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons
throughout the whole of Galilee. [Taken from MK 1:35-39]
Then [Jesus] made his disciples get into the boat and precede
him to the other side toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the
crowd. And when he had taken leave of them, he went off to the
mountain to pray. When it was evening, the boat was far out on the
sea and he was alone on shore. Then he saw that they were tossed
about while rowing, for the wind was against them. About the
fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea.
He meant to pass by them. But when they saw him walking on the
sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out. They had all seen
him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them, "Take
courage, it is I, do not be afraid!" He got into the boat
with them and the wind died down. They were (completely)
astounded. They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On
the contrary, their hearts were hardened. [Taken from MK 6:45-52]
They brought the boy to him. And when he saw him, the spirit
immediately threw the boy into convulsions. As he fell to the ground,
he began to roll around and foam at the mouth. Then he
questioned his father, "How long has this been happening to
him?" He replied, "Since childhood. It has often thrown
him into fire and into water to kill him. But if you can do
anything, have compassion on us and help us." Jesus said to
him, "'If you can!' Everything is possible to one who has
faith." Then the boy's father cried out, "I do believe,
help my unbelief!" Jesus, on seeing a crowd rapidly
gathering, rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it, "Mute
and deaf spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter
him again!" Shouting and throwing the boy into convulsions,
it came out. He became like a corpse, which caused many to say,
"He is dead!" But Jesus took him by the hand, raised
him, and he stood up. When he entered the house, his disciples
asked him in private, "Why could we not drive it out?"
He said to them, "This kind can only come out through
prayer." [MK 9:20-29]
They came to Jerusalem, and on entering the temple area he
began to drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned
the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were
selling doves. He did not permit anyone to carry anything through
the temple area. Then he taught them saying, "Is it not
written: 'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all
peoples'? But you have made it a den of thieves." [MK 11:15-17]
Early in the morning, as they were walking along, they saw the
fig tree withered to its roots. Peter remembered and said to him,
"Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has
withered." Jesus said to them in reply, "Have faith in
God. Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be lifted
up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but
believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him.
Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that
you will receive it and it shall be yours. When you stand to pray,
forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your
heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions."
[MK 11:20-25]
In the course of his teaching he said, "Beware of the
scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings
in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of
honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a
pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe
condemnation." [MK 12:38-40]
"When you see the desolating abomination standing where he
should not (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must
flee to the mountains, (and) a person on a housetop must not go
down or enter to get anything out of his house, and a person in a
field must not return to get his cloak. Woe to pregnant women and
nursing mothers in those days. Pray that this does not happen in
winter. For those times will have tribulation such as has not been
since the beginning of God's creation until now, nor ever will be.
If the Lord had not shortened those days, no one would be saved;
but for the sake of the elect whom he chose, he did shorten the
days." [MK 13:14-20]
Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he said to his
disciples, "Sit here while I pray." He took with him
Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and distressed.
Then he said to them, "My soul is sorrowful even to death.
Remain here and keep watch." He advanced a little and fell to
the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass
by him; he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to
you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you
will." When he returned he found them asleep. He said to
Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for
one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The
spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." Withdrawing again,
he prayed, saying the same thing. Then he returned once more and
found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open and did
not know what to answer him. He returned a third time and said to
them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is
enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed
over to sinners. Get up, let us go. See, my betrayer is at
hand." [MK 14:32-42]
In the days of Herod, King of Judea, there was a priest named
Zechariah of the priestly division of Abijah; his wife was from
the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both were
righteous in the eyes of God, observing all the commandments and
ordinances of the Lord blamelessly. But they had no child, because
Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in years. Once when he
was serving as priest in his division's turn before God, according
to the practice of the priestly service, he was chosen by lot to
enter the sanctuary of the Lord to burn incense. Then, when the
whole assembly of the people was praying outside at the hour of
the incense offering, the angel of the Lord appeared to him,
standing at the right of the altar of incense. Zechariah was
troubled by what he saw, and fear came upon him. But the angel
said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your
prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,
and you shall name him John. And you will have joy and gladness,
and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the
sight of (the) Lord. He will drink neither wine nor strong drink.
He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's
womb, and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord
their God. He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah
to turn the hearts of fathers toward children and the disobedient
to the understanding of the righteous, to prepare a people fit for
the Lord." [LK 1:5-17]
There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of
the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven
years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow
until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but
worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming
forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about
the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. [LK
2:36-38]
After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been
baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit
descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came
from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well
pleased." [LK 3:21-22]
The report about [Jesus] spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.
[Taken from LK 5:15-16]
And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often
and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same;
but yours eat and drink." Jesus answered them, "Can you
make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from
them, then they will fast in those days." [LK 5:33-35]
In those days [Jesus] departed to the mountain to pray, and he
spent the night in prayer to God. [Taken from LK 6:12]
[Jesus said,] "But to you who hear I say, love your
enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you,
pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on
one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who
takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic." [Taken
from LK 6:27-29]
Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were
with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I
am?" They said in reply, "John the Baptist; others,
Elijah; still others, 'One of the ancient prophets has
arisen.'" Then he said to them, "But who do you say that
I am?" Peter said in reply, "The Messiah of God."
He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone. [LK
9:18-21]
About eight days after he said this, he took Peter, John, and
James and went up the mountain to pray. While he was praying his
face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white.
And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,
who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to
accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions had been
overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory
and the two men standing with him. As they were about to part from
him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are
here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one
for Elijah." But he did not know what he was saying. While he
was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and
they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the
cloud came a voice that said, "This is my chosen Son; listen
to him." After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.
They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they
had seen.
[LK 9:28-36]
He was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished,
one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray
just as John taught his disciples." He said to them,
"When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your
name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and
forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt
to us, and do not subject us to the final test." And he
said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he
goes at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I
have nothing to offer him,' and he says in reply from within, 'Do
not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children
and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.' I
tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of
their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs
because of his persistence. And I tell you, ask and you will
receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened
to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks,
finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What
father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a
fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then,
who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how
much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those
who ask him?" [LK 11:1-13]
Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to
pray always without becoming weary. He said, "There was a
judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any
human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say,
'Render a just decision for me against my adversary.' For a long
time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, 'While it
is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,
because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just
decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.'" The
Lord said, "Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.
Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call
out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell
you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But
when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" [LK
18:1-8]
He then addressed this parable to those who were convinced of
their own righteousness and despised everyone else. "Two
people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and
the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position
and spoke this prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am
not like the rest of humanity - greedy, dishonest, adulterous - or
even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay
tithes on my whole income.' But the tax collector stood off at a
distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his
breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' I tell
you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone
who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles
himself will be exalted." [LK 18:9-14]
Then Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things,
saying to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.'"
[LK 19:45-46]
Then, within the hearing of all the people, he said to (his)
disciples, "Be on guard against the scribes, who like to go
around in long robes and love greetings in marketplaces, seats of
honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour
the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers.
They will receive a very severe condemnation." [LK 20:45-47]
"Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from
carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and
that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will
assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant
at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the
tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of
Man." [LK 21:34-36]
"Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of
you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not
fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your
brothers." He said to him, "Lord, I am prepared to go to
prison and to die with you." But he replied, "I tell
you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three
times that you know me." [LK 22:31-34]
Then going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of
Olives, and the disciples followed him. When he arrived at the
place he said to them, "Pray that you may not undergo the
test." After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and
kneeling, he prayed, saying, "Father, if you are willing,
take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be
done." (And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared
to him. He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his
sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground.) When he
rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he found them
sleeping from grief. He said to them, "Why are you sleeping?
Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test." [LK 22:39-46]
"Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I
had with you before the world began. I revealed your name to those
whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you
gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that
everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to
me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly
understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you
sent me. I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the
ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of
mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been
glorified in them. And now I will no longer be in the world, but
they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep
them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one
just as we are." [Taken from JN 17:5-11]
"As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the
world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be
consecrated in truth. I pray not only for them, but also for those
who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be
one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be
in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have
given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we
are one, I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to
perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and
that you loved them even as you loved me." [JN 17:18-23]
When they entered the city they went to the upper room where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.
All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
[ACTS 1:13-14] [Note: Some ancient languages have no word for
cousin (and other relatives) so the term "brothers" may
be used to refer to relatives other than blood brothers. The use
of this terminology does not mean that Jesus had blood brothers,
which of course he didn't since Mary is an ever virgin. For more

"Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who
accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among
us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he
was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his
resurrection." So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas,
who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed,
"You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of
these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic
ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own
place." Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon
Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostles. [Taken from
ACTS 1:21-26]
They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to
the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the
prayers. Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were
done through the apostles. All who believed were together and had
all things in common; they would sell their property and
possessions and divide them among all according to each one's
need. Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the
temple area and to breaking bread in their homes. They ate their
meals with exultation and sincerity of heart, praising God and
enjoying favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added
to their number those who were being saved. [ACTS 2:42-47]
Now Peter and John were going up to the temple area for the
three o'clock hour of prayer. And a man crippled from birth was
carried and placed at the gate of the temple called "the
Beautiful Gate" every day to beg for alms from the people who
entered the temple. When he saw Peter and John about to go into
the temple, he asked for alms. But Peter looked intently at him,
as did John, and said, "Look at us." He paid attention
to them, expecting to receive something from them. Peter said,
"I have neither silver nor gold, but what I do have I give
you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, (rise and)
walk." Then Peter took him by the right hand and raised him
up, and immediately his feet and ankles grew strong. He leaped up,
stood, and walked around, and went into the temple with them,
walking and jumping and praising God. When all the people saw him
walking and praising God, they recognized him as the one who used
to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were
filled with amazement and astonishment at what had happened to
him. [ACTS 3:1-10]
"And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and enable
your servants to speak your word with all boldness, as you stretch
forth (your) hand to heal, and signs and wonders are done through
the name of your holy servant Jesus." As they prayed, the
place where they were gathered shook, and they were all filled
with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with
boldness. [Taken from ACTS 4:29-31]
At that time, as the number of disciples continued to grow, the
Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows
were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve
called together the community of the disciples and said, "It
is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.
Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with
the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas
we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the
word." The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so
they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit,
also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of
Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the
apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The word of God
continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem
increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming
obedient to the faith. [ACTS 6:1-7]
Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had
accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went
down and prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on
them and they received the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw that the
Spirit was conferred by the laying on of the apostles' hands, he
offered them money and said, "Give me this power too, so that
anyone upon whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."
But Peter said to him, "May your money perish with you,
because you thought that you could buy the gift of God with money.
You have no share or lot in this matter, for your heart is not
upright before God. Repent of this wickedness of yours and pray to
the Lord that, if possible, your intention may be forgiven. For I
see that you are filled with bitter gall and are in the bonds of
iniquity." Simon said in reply, "Pray for me to the
Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me."
So when they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord,
they returned to Jerusalem and preached the good news to many
Samaritan villages.
[ACTS 8:14-25]
There was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias, and the Lord
said to him in a vision, "Ananias." He answered,
"Here I am, Lord." The Lord said to him, "Get up
and go to the street called Straight and ask at the house of Judas
for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is there praying, and (in a
vision) he has seen a man named Ananias come in and lay (his)
hands on him, that he may regain his sight." [ACTS 9:10-12]
Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which
translated means Dorcas). She was completely occupied with good
deeds and almsgiving. Now during those days she fell sick and
died, so after washing her, they laid (her) out in a room
upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that
Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request,
"Please come to us without delay." So Peter got up and
went with them. When he arrived, they took him to the room
upstairs where all the widows came to him weeping and showing him
the tunics and cloaks that Dorcas had made while she was with
them. Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed. Then he
turned to her body and said, "Tabitha, rise up." She
opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. He gave her his hand and
raised her up, and when he had called the holy ones and the
widows, he presented her alive. This became known all over Joppa,
and many came to believe in the Lord. [ACTS 9:36-42]
Now in Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of
the Cohort called the Italica, devout and God-fearing along with
his whole household, who used to give alms generously to the
Jewish people and pray to God constantly. One afternoon about
three o'clock, he saw plainly in a vision an angel of God come in
to him and say to him, "Cornelius." He looked intently
at him and, seized with fear, said, "What is it, sir?"
He said to him, "Your prayers and almsgiving have ascended as
a memorial offering before God. Now send some men to Joppa and
summon one Simon who is called Peter." [Taken from ACTS 10:1-5]
The next day, while they were on their way and nearing the
city, Peter went up to the roof terrace to pray at about noontime.
[ACTS 10:9]
Peter thus was being kept in prison, but prayer by the church
was fervently being made to God on his behalf. On the very night
before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter, secured by double
chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while outside the door
guards kept watch on the prison. Suddenly the angel of the Lord
stood by him and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the
side and awakened him, saying, "Get up quickly." The
chains fell from his wrists. The angel said to him, "Put on
your belt and your sandals." He did so. Then he said to him,
"Put on your cloak and follow me." So he followed him
out, not realizing that what was happening through the angel was
real; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed the first
guard, then the second, and came to the iron gate leading out to
the city, which opened for them by itself. They emerged and made
their way down an alley, and suddenly the angel left him. Then
Peter recovered his senses and said, "Now I know for certain
that (the) Lord sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of
Herod and from all that the Jewish people had been
expecting." When he realized this, he went to the house of
Mary, the mother of John who is called Mark, where there were many
people gathered in prayer. [ACTS 12:5-12]
Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers:
Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen
who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they
were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,
"Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I
have called them." Then, completing their fasting and prayer,
they laid hands on them and sent them off. [ACTS 13:1-3]
After they had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a
considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to
Iconium and to Antioch. They strengthened the spirits of the
disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying,
"It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter
the kingdom of God." They appointed presbyters for them in
each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the
Lord in whom they had put their faith. [ACTS 14:21-23]
On the sabbath we went outside the city gate along the river
where we thought there would be a place of prayer. We sat and
spoke with the women who had gathered there. One of them, a woman
named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from the city of Thyatira,
a worshiper of God, listened, and the Lord opened her heart to pay
attention to what Paul was saying. After she and her household had
been baptized, she offered us an invitation, "If you consider
me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my home," and she
prevailed on us. As we were going to the place of prayer, we met a
slave girl with an oracular spirit, who used to bring a large
profit to her owners through her fortune-telling. She began to
follow Paul and us, shouting, "These people are slaves of the
Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation." She
did this for many days. Paul became annoyed, turned, and said to
the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to
come out of her." Then it came out at that moment. [ACTS 16:13-18]
About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing
hymns to God as the prisoners listened, there was suddenly such a
severe earthquake that the foundations of the jail shook; all the
doors flew open, and the chains of all were pulled loose. [ACTS
16:25-26]
"I have never wanted anyone's silver or gold or clothing.
You know well that these very hands have served my needs and my
companions. In every way I have shown you that by hard work of
that sort we must help the weak, and keep in mind the words of the
Lord Jesus who himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to
receive.'" When he had finished speaking he knelt down and
prayed with them all. They were all weeping loudly as they threw
their arms around Paul and kissed him, for they were deeply
distressed that he had said that they would never see his face
again. Then they escorted him to the ship. [Taken from ACTS 20:33-38]
When we had taken leave of them we set sail, made a straight
run for Cos, and on the next day for Rhodes, and from there to
Patara. Finding a ship crossing to Phoenicia, we went on board and
put out to sea. We caught sight of Cyprus but passed by it on our
left and sailed on toward Syria and put in at Tyre where the ship
was to unload cargo. There we sought out the disciples and stayed
for a week. They kept telling Paul through the Spirit not to
embark for Jerusalem. At the end of our stay we left and resumed
our journey. All of them, women and children included, escorted us
out of the city, and after kneeling on the beach to pray, we bade
farewell to one another. Then we boarded the ship, and they
returned home. [ACTS 21:1-6]
"After I had returned to Jerusalem and while I was praying
in the temple, I fell into a trance and saw the Lord saying to me,
'Hurry, leave Jerusalem at once, because they will not accept your
testimony about me.' But I replied, 'Lord, they themselves know
that from synagogue to synagogue I used to imprison and beat those
who believed in you. And when the blood of your witness Stephen
was being shed, I myself stood by giving my approval and keeping
guard over the cloaks of his murderers.' Then he said to me, 'Go,
I shall send you far away to the Gentiles.'" [ACTS 22:17-21]
Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You will soon persuade me to play the Christian."
Paul replied, "I would pray to God that sooner or later not only you but all who listen to me today might become as I am except for these chains."
[ACTS 26:28-29]
Fearing that we would run aground on a rocky coast, they
dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come.
[ACTS 27:29]
It so happened that the father of Publius was sick with a fever
and dysentery. Paul visited him and, after praying, laid his hands
on him and healed him. [ACTS 28:8]
God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in proclaiming the gospel of his Son, that I remember you constantly,
always asking in my prayers that somehow by God's will I may at last find my way clear to come to you.
[ROM 1:9-10]
In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our
weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the
Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. [ROM 8:26]
Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God on their behalf
is for salvation. [ROM 10:1]
Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer.
[ROM 12:12]
I urge you, (brothers,) by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the
love of the Spirit, to join me in the struggle by your prayers to
God on my behalf, that I may be delivered from the disobedient in
Judea, and that my ministry for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the
holy ones, so that I may come to you with joy by the will of God
and be refreshed together with you. [ROM 15:30-32]
Do not deprive each other, except perhaps by mutual consent for
a time, to be free for prayer, but then return to one another, so
that Satan may not tempt you through your lack of self-control.
[1COR 7:5]
But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man,
and a husband the head of his wife, and God the head of Christ.
Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered brings shame
upon his head. But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head
unveiled brings shame upon her head, for it is one and the same
thing as if she had had her head shaved. For if a woman does not
have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But
if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head
shaved, then she should wear a veil. A man, on the other hand,
should not cover his head, because he is the image and glory of
God, but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from
woman, but woman from man; nor was man created for woman, but
woman for man; for this reason a woman should have a sign of
authority on her head, because of the angels. Woman is not
independent of man or man of woman in the Lord. For just as woman
came from man, so man is born of woman; but all things are from
God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God
with her head unveiled? Does not nature itself teach you that if a
man wears his hair long it is a disgrace to him, whereas if a
woman has long hair it is her glory, because long hair has been
given (her) for a covering? But if anyone is inclined to be
argumentative, we do not have such a custom, nor do the churches
of God. [1COR 11:3-16]
Similarly, if you, because of speaking in tongues, do not utter
intelligible speech, how will anyone know what is being said? For
you will be talking to the air. It happens that there are many
different languages in the world, and none is meaningless; but if
I do not know the meaning of a language, I shall be a foreigner to
one who speaks it, and one who speaks it a foreigner to me. So
with yourselves: since you strive eagerly for spirits, seek to
have an abundance of them for building up the church. Therefore,
one who speaks in a tongue should pray to be able to interpret.
(For) if I pray in a tongue, my spirit is at prayer but my mind is
unproductive. So what is to be done? I will pray with the spirit,
but I will also pray with the mind. I will sing praise with the
spirit, but I will also sing praise with the mind. Otherwise, if
you pronounce a blessing (with) the spirit, how shall one who
holds the place of the uninstructed say the "Amen" to
your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? For
you may be giving thanks very well, but the other is not built up.
I give thanks to God that I speak in tongues more than any of you,
but in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, so
as to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. [1COR
14:9-19]
He rescued us from such great danger of death, and he will continue to rescue us; in him we have put our hope (that) he will also rescue us again,
as you help us with prayer, so that thanks may be given by many on our behalf for the gift granted us through the prayers of many.
[2COR 1:10-11]
Through the evidence of this service, you are glorifying God for your obedient confession of the gospel of Christ and the generosity of your contribution to them and to all others,
while in prayer on your behalf they long for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.
[2COR 9:13-14]
Examine yourselves to see whether you are living
in faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is
in you? - unless, of course, you fail the test. I hope you will
discover that we have not failed. But we pray to God that you may
not do evil, not that we may appear to have passed the test but
that you may do what is right, even though we may seem to have
failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for
the truth. For we rejoice when we are weak but you are strong.
What we pray for is your improvement. [2COR 13:5-9]
Therefore, I, too, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and
of your love for all the holy ones, do not cease giving thanks for
you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and
revelation resulting in knowledge of him. [EPH 1:15-17]
With all prayer and supplication, pray at every
opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all
perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones and also for
me, that speech may be given me to open my mouth, to make known
with boldness the mystery of the gospel for which I am an
ambassador in chains, so that I may have the courage to speak as I
must. [EPH 6:18-20]
I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you,
because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now.
[PHIL 1:3-5]
And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more
and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern
what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the
day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes
through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. [PHIL 1:9-11]
I want you to know, brothers, that my situation has turned out
rather to advance the gospel, so that my imprisonment has become
well known in Christ throughout the whole praetorium and to all
the rest, and so that the majority of the brothers, having taken
encouragement in the Lord from my imprisonment, dare more than
ever to proclaim the word fearlessly. Of course, some preach
Christ from envy and rivalry, others from good will. The latter
act out of love, aware that I am here for the defense of the
gospel; the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not
from pure motives, thinking that they will cause me trouble in my
imprisonment. What difference does it make, as long as in every
way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being proclaimed?
And in that I rejoice. Indeed I shall continue to rejoice, for I
know that this will result in deliverance for me through your
prayers and support from the Spirit of Jesus Christ. [PHIL 1:12-19]
Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and
petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.
[PHIL 4:6]
We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, when we pray for you, for we have heard of your faith in
Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the holy ones
because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. Of this you have
already heard through the word of truth, the gospel, that has come
to you. Just as in the whole world it is bearing fruit and
growing, so also among you, from the day you heard it and came to
know the grace of God in truth, as you learned it from Epaphras
our beloved fellow slave, who is a trustworthy minister of Christ
on your behalf and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.
Therefore, from the day we heard this, we do not cease praying for
you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his
will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding to live in a
manner worthy of the Lord, so as to be fully pleasing, in every
good work bearing fruit and growing in the knowledge of God,
strengthened with every power, in accord with his glorious might,
for all endurance and patience, with joy giving thanks to the
Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the
holy ones in light. He delivered us from the power of darkness and
transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have
redemption, the forgiveness of sins. [COL 1:3-14]
Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving; at the same time, pray for us, too, that God may open a door to us for the word, to speak of the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison,
that I may make it clear, as I must speak. [COL 4:2-4]
Epaphras sends you greetings; he is one of you, a slave of
Christ (Jesus), always striving for you in his prayers so that you
may be perfect and fully assured in all the will of God. For I can
testify that he works very hard for you and for those in Laodicea
and those in Hierapolis. [COL 4:12-13]
We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in
our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and
labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ,
before our God and Father, knowing, brothers loved by God, how you
were chosen. [1THES 1:2-4]
What thanksgiving, then, can we render to God for you, for all
the joy we feel on your account before our God? Night and day we
pray beyond measure to see you in person and to remedy the
deficiencies of your faith. Now may God himself, our Father, and
our Lord Jesus direct our way to you, and may the Lord make you
increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as
we have for you, so as to strengthen your hearts, to be blameless
in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord
Jesus with all his holy ones. (Amen.) [1THES 3:9-13]
Pray without ceasing. [1THES 5:17]
Brothers, pray for us (too). [1THES 5:25]
To this end, we always pray for you, that our God may make you
worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every
good purpose and every effort of faith, that the name of our Lord
Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, in accord with the
grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ. [2THES 1:11-12]
Finally, brothers, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord
may speed forward and be glorified, as it did among you, and that
we may be delivered from perverse and wicked people, for not all
have faith. But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and
guard you from the evil one. [2THES 3:1-3]
First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers,
petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings
and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil
life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God
our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to
knowledge of the truth. [1TM 2:1-4]
It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray,
lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument. [1TM 2:8]
For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected when received with thanksgiving,
for it is made holy by the invocation of God in prayer. [1TM 4:4-5]
Honor widows who are truly widows. But if a widow has children
or grandchildren, let these first learn to perform their religious
duty to their own family and to make recompense to their parents,
for this is pleasing to God. The real widow, who is all alone, has
set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers
night and day. But the one who is self-indulgent is dead while she
lives. [1TM 5:3-6]
I am grateful to God, whom I worship with a clear conscience as
my ancestors did, as I remember you constantly in my prayers,
night and day. [2TM 1:3]
I give thanks to my God always, remembering you in my prayers,
as I hear of the love and the faith you have in the Lord Jesus and
for all the holy ones, so that your partnership in the faith may
become effective in recognizing every good there is in us that
leads to Christ. [PHLM 1:4-6]
At the same time prepare a guest room for me, for I hope to be
granted to you through your prayers. [PHLM 1:22]
In the days when he was in the flesh, he offered prayers and
supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to
save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and
when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal
salvation for all who obey him, declared by God high priest
according to the order of Melchizedek. [HEB 5:7-10]
Pray for us, for we are confident that we have a clear
conscience, wishing to act rightly in every respect. I especially ask for your prayers that I may be restored to you
very soon. [HEB 13:18-19]
Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in
good spirits? He should sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? He
should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray
over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, and
the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will
raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one
another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous
person is very powerful. Elijah was a human being like us; yet he
prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and for three years and
six months it did not rain upon the land. Then he prayed again,
and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit. [JMS 5:13-18]
Likewise, you husbands should live with your wives in understanding,
showing honor to the weaker female sex, since we
are joint heirs of the gift of life, so that your prayers may not
be hindered. [1PT 3:7]
"For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears
turned to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against
evildoers." [1PT 3:12]
The end of all things is at hand. Therefore, be serious and
sober for prayers. [1PT 4:7]
If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly,
he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for
those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly
sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. All wrongdoing
is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly. [1JN 5:16-17]
But you, beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the
apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, for they told you, "In
(the) last time there will be scoffers who will live according to
their own godless desires." These are the ones who cause
divisions; they live on the natural plane, devoid of the Spirit.
But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith;
pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God and
wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal
life. On those who waver, have mercy; save others by snatching
them out of the fire; on others have mercy with fear, abhorring
even the outer garment stained by the flesh. [JUDE 1:17-23]
Then I saw standing in the midst of the throne and the four
living creatures and the elders, a Lamb that seemed to have been
slain. He had seven horns and seven eyes; these are the (seven)
spirits of God sent out into the whole world. He came and received
the scroll from the right hand of the one who sat on the throne.
When he took it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four
elders fell down before the Lamb. Each of the elders held a harp
and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the
holy ones. [Taken from RV 5:6-8]
Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a gold
censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along
with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was
before the throne. The smoke of the incense along with the prayers
of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel. [RV
8:3-4]
