For just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down And do
not return there till they have watered the earth, making it
fertile and fruitful, Giving seed to him who sows and bread to him
who eats, So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; It
shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the
end for which I sent it. Yes, in joy you shall depart, in peace
you shall be brought back; Mountains and hills shall break out in
song before you, and all the trees of the countryside shall clap
their hands. In place of the thornbush, the cypress shall grow,
instead of nettles, the myrtle. This shall be to the LORD'S
renown, an everlasting imperishable sign. [ISA 55:10-13]
The just man perishes, but no one takes it to heart; Devout men
are swept away, with no one giving it a thought. Though he is
taken away from the presence of evil, the just man enters into
peace; There is rest on his couch for the sincere, straightforward
              man. [ISA 57:1-2]
Because of their wicked avarice I was angry, and struck them,
hiding myself in wrath, as they went their own rebellious way. I
saw their ways, but I will heal them and lead them; I will give
full comfort to them and to those who mourn for them, I, the
Creator, who gave them life. Peace, peace to the far and the near,
says the LORD; and I will heal them. But the wicked are like the
tossing sea which cannot be calmed, And its waters cast up mud and
filth. No peace for the wicked! says my God. [ISA 57:17-21]
The way of peace they know not, and there is nothing that is
right in their paths; Their ways they have made crooked, whoever
treads them knows no peace. [ISA 59:8]
              In place of bronze I will bring gold, instead of iron, silver;
In place of wood, bronze, instead of stones, iron; I will appoint
peace your governor, and justice your ruler. No longer shall
violence be heard of in your land, or plunder and ruin within your
boundaries. You shall call your walls "Salvation" and
your gates "Praise." No longer shall the sun be your
light by day, Nor the brightness of the moon shine upon you at
night; The LORD shall be your light forever, your God shall be
your glory. No longer shall your sun go down, or your moon
withdraw, For the LORD will be your light forever, and the days of
your mourning shall be at an end. Your people shall all be just,
they shall always possess the land, They, the bud of my planting,
my handiwork to show my glory. [ISA 60:17-21]
So gird yourselves with sackcloth, mourn and wail: "The
blazing wrath of the LORD is not turned away from us." In
that day, says the LORD, The king will lose heart, and the
princes; the priests will be amazed, and the prophets stunned.
"Alas! Lord GOD," they will say, "You only deceived
us When you said: Peace shall be yours; for the sword touches our
very soul." At that time it will be said of this people and
of Jerusalem, "From the glaring heights through the desert a
wind comes toward the daughter of my people." Not to winnow,
not to cleanse, does this wind from the heights come at my
bidding; And I myself now pronounce sentence upon them. [JER 4:8-12]
They would repair, as though it were nought, the injury to my
people: "Peace, peace!" they say, though there is no
peace. They are odious; they have done abominable things, yet they
are not at all ashamed, they know not how to blush. Hence they
shall be among those who fall; in their time of punishment they
shall go down, says the LORD. [Taken from JER 6:14-15]
I will gather them all in, says the LORD: no grapes on the
vine, No figs on the fig trees, foliage withered! Why do we remain
here? Let us form ranks and enter the walled cities, to perish
there; For the LORD has wrought our destruction, he has given us
poison to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD. We wait
for peace to no avail; for a time of healing, but terror comes
              instead. [JER 8:13-15]
If running against men has wearied you, how will you race
against horses? And if in a land of peace you fall headlong, what
will you do in the thickets of the Jordan? [JER 12:5]
Many shepherds have ravaged my vineyard, have trodden my
heritage underfoot; The portion that delighted me they have turned
into a desert waste. They have made it a mournful waste, desolate
it lies before me, Desolate, all the land, because no one takes it
to heart. Upon every desert height brigands have come up. The LORD
has a sword which consumes the land, from end to end: no peace for
all mankind. They have sown wheat and reaped thorns, they have
tired themselves out to no purpose; They recoil before their
harvest, the flaming anger of the LORD. [JER 12:10-13]
Ah! Lord GOD, I replied, it is the prophets who say to them, "You shall not see the sword; famine shall not befall you. Indeed, I will give you lasting peace in this place." Lies these prophets utter in my name, the LORD said to me. I did not send them; I gave them no command nor did I speak to them. Lying visions, foolish divination, dreams of their own imagination, they prophesy to you.
              [JER 14:13-14]
Speak to them this word: Let my eyes stream with tears day and
night, without rest, Over the great destruction which overwhelms
the virgin daughter of my people, over her incurable wound. If I
walk out into the field, look! those slain by the sword; If I
enter the city, look! those consumed by hunger. Even the prophet
and the priest forage in a land they know not. Have you cast Judah
off completely? Is Zion loathsome to you? Why have you struck us a
blow that cannot be healed? We wait for peace, to no avail; for a
time of healing, but terror comes instead. We recognize, O LORD,
our wickedness, the guilt of our fathers; that we have sinned
against you. For your name's sake spurn us not, disgrace not the
throne of your glory; remember your covenant with us, and break it
not. Among the nations' idols is there any that gives rain? Or can
the mere heavens send showers? Is it not you alone, O LORD, our
God, to whom we look? You alone have done all these things. [JER
              14:17-22]
Thus says the LORD of hosts: Listen not to the words of your
prophets, who fill you with emptiness; Visions of their own fancy
they speak, not from the mouth of the LORD. They say to those who
              despise the word of the LORD, "Peace shall be yours";
And to everyone who walks in hardness of heart, "No evil
shall overtake you." Now, who has stood in the council of the
LORD, to see him and to hear his word? Who has heeded his word, so
as to announce it? See, the storm of the LORD! His wrath breaks
forth In a whirling storm that bursts upon the heads of the
              wicked. [JER 23:16-19]
There is no flight for the shepherds, no escape for the leaders
of the flock. Listen! Wailing from the shepherds, howling by the
leaders of the flock! For the LORD lays waste their grazing place,
desolate lie the peaceful pastures; The lion leaves his lair, and
their land is made desolate By the sweeping sword, by the burning
wrath of the LORD. [JER 25:35-38]
For they prophesy lies to you, in order to drive you far from your land, to make me banish you so that you will perish. The people that submits its neck to the yoke of the king of Babylon to serve him I will leave in peace on its own land, says the LORD, to till it and dwell in it.
              [JER 27:10-11]
The prophet Jeremiah answered the prophet Hananiah in the
presence of the priests and all the people assembled in the house
of the LORD, and said: Amen! thus may the LORD do! May he fulfill
the things you have prophesied by bringing the vessels of the
house of the LORD and all the exiles back from Babylon to this
place! But now, listen to what I am about to state in your hearing
and the hearing of all the people. From of old, the prophets who
were before you and me prophesied war, woe, and pestilence against
many lands and mighty kingdoms. But the prophet who prophesies
peace is recognized as truly sent by the LORD only when his
prophetic prediction is fulfilled. [JER 28:5-9]
These are the words which the LORD spoke to Israel and to
Judah: thus says the LORD: A cry of dismay we hear; fear reigns,
not peace. Inquire, and see: since when do men bear children? Why,
then, do I see all these men, with their hands on their loins like
women in childbirth? Why have all their faces turned deathly pale?
How mighty is that day - none like it! A time of distress for
Jacob, though he shall be saved from it. [Taken from JER 30:4-7]
Behold, I will treat and assuage the city's wounds; I will heal
them, and reveal to them an abundance of lasting peace. I will
change the lot of Judah and the lot of Israel, and rebuild them as
of old. I will cleanse them of all the guilt they incurred by
sinning against me; all their offenses by which they sinned and
rebelled against me, I will forgive. Then Jerusalem shall be my
joy, my praise, my glory, before all the nations of the earth, as
they hear of all the good I will do among them. They shall be in
fear and trembling over all the peaceful benefits I will give her.
              [JER 33:6-9]
But if you obey the word of the LORD, Zedekiah, king of Judah, then, says the LORD to you, you shall not die by the sword. You shall die in peace, and they will lament you as their lord, and burn spices for your burial as they did for your fathers, the kings who preceded you from the first; it is I who make this promise, says the LORD.
              [JER 34:4-5]
He has broken my teeth with gravel, pressed my face in the
dust; My soul is deprived of peace, I have forgotten what
happiness is; I tell myself my future is lost, all that I hoped
for from the LORD. The thought of my homeless poverty is wormwood
and gall; Remembering it over and over leaves my soul downcast
within me. But I will call this to mind, as my reason to have
hope: The favors of the LORD are not exhausted, his mercies are
not spent; They are renewed each morning, so great is his
faithfulness. My portion is the LORD, says my soul; therefore will
I hope in him. Good is the LORD to one who waits for him, to the
soul that seeks him; It is good to hope in silence for the saving
help of the LORD. [LAM 3:16-26]
How is it, Israel, that you are in the land of your foes, grown
old in a foreign land, Defiled with the dead, accounted with those
destined for the nether world? You have forsaken the fountain of
wisdom! Had you walked in the way of God, you would have dwelt in
enduring peace. Learn where prudence is, where strength, where
understanding; That you may know also where are length of days,
and life, where light of the eyes, and peace. [BARUCH 3:10-14]
Farewell, my children, farewell: I am left desolate. I have
taken off the garment of peace, have put on sackcloth for my
prayer of supplication, and while I live I will cry out to the
Eternal God. "Fear not, my children; call upon God, who will
deliver you from oppression at enemy hands. I have trusted in the
Eternal God for your welfare, and joy has come to me from the Holy
One Because of the mercy that will swiftly reach you from your
eternal savior. With mourning and lament I sent you forth, but God
will give you back to me with enduring gladness and joy." [BARUCH
              4:19-23]
Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery; put on
the splendor of glory from God forever: Wrapped in the cloak of
justice from God, bear on your head the mitre that displays the
glory of the eternal name. For God will show all the earth your
splendor: you will be named by God forever the peace of justice,
the glory of God's worship. [BARUCH 5:1-4]
A copy of the letter which Jeremiah sent to those who were
being led captive to Babylon by the king of the Babylonians, to
convey to them what God had commanded him: For the sins you
committed before God, you are being led captive to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonians. When you reach Babylon
              you will be there many years, a period seven generations long;
after which I will bring you back from there in peace. [Taken from
              BARUCH 6:1-2]
When anguish comes they shall seek peace, but there will be
none. There shall be disaster after disaster, rumor after rumor.
Prophetic vision shall fade; instruction shall be lacking to the
priest, and counsel to the elders, while the prince shall be
enveloped in terror, and the hands of the common people shall
tremble. I will deal with them according to their conduct, and
according to their judgments I will judge them; thus they shall
know that I am the LORD. [Taken from EZEK 7:25-27]
Thus the word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, prophesy
against the prophets of Israel, prophesy! Say to those who
prophesy their own thought: Hear the word of the LORD: You did not
step into the breach, nor did you build a wall about the house of
Israel that would stand firm against attack on the day of the
LORD. Was not the vision you saw false, and your divination lying?
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have spoken
falsehood and have seen lying visions, therefore see! I am coming
at you, says the Lord GOD. For the very reason that they led my
people astray, saying, "Peace!" when there was no peace,
and that, as one built a wall, they would cover it with whitewash,
              say then to the whitewashers: I will bring down a flooding rain;
hailstones shall fall, and a storm wind shall break out. And when
the wall has fallen, will you not be asked: Where is the whitewash
you spread on? Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: In my fury I will
let loose storm winds; because of my anger there shall be a
flooding rain, and hailstones shall fall with destructive wrath. I
will tear down the wall that you have whitewashed and level it to
the ground, laying bare its foundations. When it falls, you shall
be crushed beneath it; thus you shall know that I am the LORD.
When I have spent my fury on the wall and its whitewashers, I tell
you there shall be no wall, nor shall there be whitewashers -
those prophets of Israel who prophesied to Jerusalem and saw for
it visions of peace when there was no peace, says the Lord GOD. [EZEK
              13:1-16]
I will appoint one shepherd over them to pasture them, my
servant David; he shall pasture them and be their shepherd. I, the
LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince
among them. I, the LORD, have spoken. I will make a covenant of
peace with them, and rid the country of ravenous beasts, that they
may dwell securely in the desert and sleep in the forests. I will
place them about my hill, sending rain in due season, rains that
shall be a blessing to them. The trees of the field shall bear
their fruits, and the land its crops, and they shall dwell
securely on their own soil. Thus they shall know that I am the
LORD when I break the bonds of their yoke and free them from the
power of those who enslaved them. They shall no longer be
despoiled by the nations or devoured by beasts of the earth, but
shall dwell secure, with no one to frighten them. I will prepare
for them peaceful fields for planting; they shall no longer be
carried off by famine in the land, or bear the reproaches of the
nations. Thus they shall know that I, the LORD, am their God, and
they are my people, the house of Israel, says the Lord GOD. (You,
my sheep, you are the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, says
              the Lord GOD.) [EZEK 34:23-31]
I will make them one nation upon the land, in the mountains of
Israel, and there shall be one prince for them all. Never again
shall they be two nations, and never again shall they be divided
into two kingdoms. No longer shall they defile themselves with
their idols, their abominations, and all their transgressions. I
will deliver them from all their sins of apostasy, and cleanse
them so that they may be my people and I may be their God. My
servant David shall be prince over them, and there shall be one
shepherd for them all; they shall live by my statutes and
carefully observe my decrees. They shall live on the land which I
gave to my servant Jacob, the land where their fathers lived; they
shall live on it forever, they, and their children, and their
children's children, with my servant David their prince forever. I
will make with them a covenant of peace; it shall be an
everlasting covenant with them, and I will multiply them, and put
my sanctuary among them forever. My dwelling shall be with them; I
will be their God, and they shall be my people. Thus the nations
shall know that it is I, the LORD, who make Israel holy, when my
sanctuary shall be set up among them forever. [EZEK 37:22-28]
King Nebuchadnezzar to the nations and peoples of every
language, wherever they dwell on earth: abundant peace! [DAN 3:98]
Then King Darius wrote to the nations and peoples of every
language, wherever they dwell on the earth: "All peace to
you! I decree that throughout my royal domain the God of Daniel is
to be reverenced and feared: For he is the living God, enduring
forever; his kingdom shall not be destroyed, and his dominion
shall be without end. He is a deliverer and savior, working signs
and wonders in heaven and on earth, and he delivered Daniel from
the lions' power." So Daniel fared well during the reign of
Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian. [DAN 6:26-29]
After some years they shall become allies: the daughter of the
king of the south shall come to the king of the north in the
interest of peace. But her bid for power shall fail: and her line
shall not be recognized, and she shall be given up, together with
those who brought her, her son and her husband. [Taken from DAN
              11:6]
How they search Esau, seek out his hiding places! To the border
they drive you - all your allies; They deceive you, they overpower
you - those at peace with you; Those who eat your bread lay snares
beneath you: There is no understanding in him! Shall I not, says
the LORD, on that day make the wise men disappear from Edom, and
understanding from the mount of Esau? [OBAD 1:6-8]
Thus says the LORD regarding the prophets who lead my people
astray; Who, when their teeth have something to bite, announce
peace, But when one fails to put something in their mouth,
proclaim war against him. Therefore you shall have night, not
vision, darkness, not divination; The sun shall go down upon the
prophets, and the day shall be dark for them. Then shall the seers
be put to shame, and the diviners confounded; They shall cover
their lips, all of them, because there is no answer from God. [MICAH
              3:5-7]
He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of
the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD, his God; And they
shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the
earth; he shall be peace. If Assyria invades our country and
treads upon our land, We shall raise against it seven shepherds,
eight men of royal rank; And they shall tend the land of Assyria
with the sword, and the land of Nimrod with the drawn sword; And
we shall be delivered from Assyria, if it invades our land and
treads upon our borders. [MICAH 5:3-5]
See, upon the mountains there advances the bearer of good news,
announcing peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah, fulfill your
vows! For nevermore shall you be invaded by the scoundrel; he is
              completely destroyed. [NAHUM 2:1]
Greater will be the future glory of this house than the former,
says the LORD of hosts; And in this place I will give you peace,
says the LORD of hosts. [HAG 2:9]
Thereupon this word of the LORD of hosts came to me: Say to all
the people of the land and to the priests: When you fasted and
mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month these seventy years,
was it really for me that you fasted? And when you were eating and
drinking, was it not for yourselves that you ate, and for
yourselves that you drank? Were not these the words which the LORD
spoke through the former prophets, when Jerusalem and the
surrounding cities were inhabited and at peace, when the Negeb and
the foothills were inhabited? [ZECH 7:4-7]
But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as in
former days, says the LORD of hosts, for it is the seedtime of
peace: the vine shall yield its fruit, the land shall bear its
crops, and the heavens shall give their dew; all these things I
will have the remnant of the people possess. Just as you were a
curse among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so
will I save you that you may be a blessing; do not fear, but let
your hands be strong. Thus says the LORD of hosts: As I determined
to harm you when your fathers provoked me to wrath, says the LORD
of hosts, and I did not relent, so again in these days I have
determined to favor Jerusalem and the house of Judah; do not fear!
These then are the things you should do: Speak the truth to one
another; let there be honesty and peace in the judgments at your
gates, and let none of you plot evil against another in his heart,
nor love a false oath. For all these things I hate, says the LORD.
This word of the LORD of hosts came to me: Thus says the LORD of
hosts: The fast days of the fourth, the fifth, the seventh, and
the tenth months shall become occasions of joy and gladness,
cheerful festivals for the house of Judah; only love faithfulness
and peace. Thus says the LORD of hosts: There shall yet come
peoples, the inhabitants of many cities; and the inhabitants of
one city shall approach those of another, and say, "Come! let
us go to implore the favor of the LORD"; and, "I too
will go to seek the LORD." Many peoples and strong nations
shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem and to implore
the favor of the LORD. Thus says the LORD of hosts: In those days
ten men of every nationality, speaking different tongues, shall
take hold, yes, take hold of every Jew by the edge of his garment
and say, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is
              with you." [ZECH 8:11-23]
Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter
Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he,
Meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass. He
shall banish the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from
Jerusalem; The warrior's bow shall be banished, and he shall
proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to
sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. [ZECH 9:9-10]
My covenant with him was one of life and peace; fear I put in
him, and he feared me, and stood in awe of my name. True doctrine
was in his mouth, and no dishonesty was found upon his lips; He
walked with me in integrity and in uprightness, and turned many
away from evil. For the lips of the priest are to keep knowledge,
and instruction is to be sought from his mouth, because he is the
messenger of the LORD of hosts. [MAL 2:5-7]
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children
              of God." [MT 5:9]
Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus,
"Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go
rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make
this proclamation: 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Cure the
sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without
cost you have received; without cost you are to give. Do not take
gold or silver or copper for your belts; no sack for the journey,
or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The laborer
deserves his keep. Whatever town or village you enter, look for a
worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave. As you enter
a house, wish it peace. If the house is worthy, let your peace
come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you. Whoever will
not receive you or listen to your words - go outside that house or
town and shake the dust from your feet. Amen, I say to you, it
will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the
day of judgment than for that town." [MT 10:5-15]
[Jesus said,] "Do not think that I have come to bring
peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the
sword. For I have come to set a man 'against his father, a
daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her
mother-in-law; and one's enemies will be those of his
              household.'" [Taken from MT 10:34-36]
He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and
pressed upon him. There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for
twelve years. She had suffered greatly at the hands of many
doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but
only grew worse. She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him
in the crowd and touched his cloak. She said, "If I but touch
his clothes, I shall be cured." Immediately her flow of blood
dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her
affliction. Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him,
turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who has touched my
clothes?" But his disciples said to him, "You see how
the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, 'Who touched
me?'" And he looked around to see who had done it. The woman,
realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and
trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole
truth. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you.
Go in peace and be cured of your affliction." [MK 5:24-34]
"Everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if salt becomes insipid, with what will you restore its flavor? Keep salt in yourselves and you will have peace with one another." [MK
              9:49-50]
Then Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit,
prophesied, saying: "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
for he has visited and brought redemption to his people. He has
raised up a horn for our salvation within the house of David his
servant, even as he promised through the mouth of his holy
prophets from of old: salvation from our enemies and from the hand
of all who hate us, to show mercy to our fathers and to be mindful
of his holy covenant and of the oath he swore to Abraham our
father, and to grant us that, rescued from the hand of enemies,
without fear we might worship him in holiness and righteousness
before him all our days. And you, child, will be called prophet of
the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his
ways, to give his people knowledge of salvation through the
forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God
by which the daybreak from on high will visit us to shine on those
who sit in darkness and death's shadow, to guide our feet into the
              path of peace." [LK 1:67-79]
Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields
and keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the
Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them,
and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them,
"Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of
great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city
of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.
And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped
in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." And suddenly
there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel,
praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest and on
earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." [LK 2:8-14]
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This
man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel,
and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by
the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen
              the Messiah of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple;
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the
custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and
blessed God, saying: "Now, Master, you may let your servant
go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your
salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light
for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people
Israel." The child's father and mother were amazed at what
was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his
mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise
of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and
you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many
hearts may be revealed." [LK 2:25-35]
Then [Jesus] turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Do
you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me
water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears and
wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but she has
not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. You did not
anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment.
So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has
shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves
little." He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
The others at table said to themselves, "Who is this who even
forgives sins?" But he said to the woman, "Your faith
has saved you; go in peace." [Taken from LK 7:44-50]
And a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years, who
(had spent her whole livelihood on doctors and) was unable to be
cured by anyone, came up behind him and touched the tassel on his
cloak. Immediately her bleeding stopped. Jesus then asked,
"Who touched me?" While all were denying it, Peter said,
"Master, the crowds are pushing and pressing in upon
you." But Jesus said, "Someone has touched me; for I
know that power has gone out from me." When the woman
realized that she had not escaped notice, she came forward
trembling. Falling down before him, she explained in the presence
of all the people why she had touched him and how she had been
healed immediately. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has
saved you; go in peace." [LK 8:43-48]
After this the Lord appointed seventy (-two) others whom he
sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to
visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the
laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out
laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you
              like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals;
and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter,
first say, 'Peace to this household.' If a peaceful person lives
there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to
you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to
you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from
one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome
you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to
them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.' Whatever town you
enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and
say, 'The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we
shake off against you.' Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at
hand. I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day
than for that town." [LK 10:1-12]
[Jesus aid,] "I have come to set the earth on fire, and
how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which
I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is
accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on
the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a
household of five will be divided, three against two and two
against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son
against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter
against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." [Taken from
              LK 12:49-53]
Great crowds were traveling with [Jesus], and he turned and
addressed them, "If any one comes to me without hating his
father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and
even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not
carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Which
of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and
calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion?
Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable
to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say,
'This one began to build but did not have the resources to
finish.' Or what king marching into battle would not first sit
down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can
successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty
thousand troops? But if not, while he is still far away, he will
send a delegation to ask for peace terms. In the same way,
everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot
be my disciple." [Taken from LK 14:25-33]
So those who had been sent went off and found everything just
as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners
said to them, "Why are you untying this colt?" They
answered, "The Master has need of it." So they brought
it to Jesus, threw their cloaks over the colt, and helped Jesus to
mount. As he rode along, the people were spreading their cloaks on
the road; and now as he was approaching the slope of the Mount of
Olives, the whole multitude of his disciples began to praise God
aloud with joy for all the mighty deeds they had seen. They
proclaimed: "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the
Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest." Some of the
Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your
disciples." He said in reply, "I tell you, if they keep
silent, the stones will cry out!" As he drew near, he saw the
city and wept over it, saying, "If this day you only knew
what makes for peace - but now it is hidden from your eyes. For
the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a
palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all
sides. They will smash you to the ground and your children within
you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you
because you did not recognize the time of your visitation."
              [LK 19:32-44]
Then they said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning
(within us) while he spoke to us on the way and opened the
scriptures to us?" So they set out at once and returned to
Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those
with them who were saying, "The Lord has truly been raised
and has appeared to Simon!" Then the two recounted what had
taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the
breaking of the bread. While they were still speaking about this,
he stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with
you." But they were startled and terrified and thought that
they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, "Why are you
troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my
hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because
a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have."
              [LK 24:32-39]
Jesus answered and said to him, "Whoever loves me will
keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him
and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not
keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the
Father who sent me. I have told you this while I am with you. The
Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name -
he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told
you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the
world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be
troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, 'I am going away and I
will come back to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I
am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now
I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens
you may believe. I will no longer speak much with you, for the
ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me, but the
world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the
Father has commanded me. Get up, let us go." [JN 14:23-31]
His disciples said, "Now you are talking plainly, and not
in any figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything
and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of
this we believe that you came from God." Jesus answered them,
"Do you believe now? Behold, the hour is coming and has
arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you
will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is
with me. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me.
In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have
              conquered the world." [JN 16:29-33]
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors
were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus
came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be
with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands
and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
(Jesus) said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father
has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he
breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you
retain are retained." Thomas, called Didymus, one of the
Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples
said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to
them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and
put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I
will not believe." Now a week later his disciples were again
inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors
were locked, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be
with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here
and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and
do not be unbelieving, but believe." Thomas answered and said
to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him,
"Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed
are those who have not seen and have believed." [JN 20:19-29]
Moses was educated (in) all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was
powerful in his words and deeds. When he was forty years old, he
decided to visit his kinsfolk, the Israelites. When he saw one of
them treated unjustly, he defended and avenged the oppressed man
by striking down the Egyptian. He assumed (his) kinsfolk would
understand that God was offering them deliverance through him, but
they did not understand. The next day he appeared to them as they
were fighting and tried to reconcile them peacefully, saying,
'Men, you are brothers. Why are you harming one another?' Then the
one who was harming his neighbor pushed him aside, saying, 'Who
appointed you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing
me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?' Moses fled when he heard
this and settled as an alien in the land of Midian, where he
became the father of two sons. [Taken from ACTS 7:22-29]
The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at
peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord,
and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers.
              [ACTS 9:31]
Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, "In truth, I see
that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever
fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. You know the
word (that) he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace
through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all
over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John
preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit
and power. He went about doing good and healing all those
oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of
all that he did both in the country of the Jews and (in)
Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This
man God raised (on) the third day and granted that he be visible,
not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in
advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is
the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To
him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in
him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name." [ACTS
              10:34-43]
He had long been very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon,
who now came to him in a body. After winning over Blastus, the
king's chamberlain, they sued for peace because their country was
supplied with food from the king's territory. [ACTS 12:20]
Since we have heard that some of our number (who went out)
without any mandate from us have upset you with their teachings
and disturbed your peace of mind, we have with one accord decided
to choose representatives and to send them to you along with our
beloved Barnabas and Paul, who have dedicated their lives to the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ. [ACTS 15:24-26]
After they had spent some time there, they were sent off with
greetings of peace from the brothers to those who had commissioned
              them. [ACTS 15:33]
The jailer reported the (se) words to Paul, "The
magistrates have sent orders that you be released. Now, then, come
out and go in peace." But Paul said to them, "They have
beaten us publicly, even though we are Roman citizens and have not
been tried, and have thrown us into prison. And now, are they
going to release us secretly? By no means. Let them come
themselves and lead us out." [ACTS 16:36-37]
Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set
apart for the gospel of God, which he promised previously through
his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel about his Son,
descended from David according to the flesh, but established as
Son of God in power according to the spirit of holiness through
resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him we
have received the grace of apostleship, to bring about the
obedience of faith, for the sake of his name, among all the
Gentiles, among whom are you also, who are called to belong to
Jesus Christ; to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to be
holy. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord
              Jesus Christ. [ROM 1:1-7]
Therefore, you are without excuse, every one of you who passes
judgment. For by the standard by which you judge another you
condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the very same things.
We know that the judgment of God on those who do such things is
true. Do you suppose, then, you who judge those who engage in such
things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape the judgment
of God? Or do you hold his priceless kindness, forbearance, and
patience in low esteem, unaware that the kindness of God would
lead you to repentance? By your stubbornness and impenitent heart,
you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and
revelation of the just judgment of God, who will repay everyone
according to his works: eternal life to those who seek glory,
honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works, but
wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey
wickedness. Yes, affliction and distress will come upon every
human being who does evil, Jew first and then Greek. But there
will be glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good, Jew
first and then Greek. There is no partiality with God. [ROM 2:1-11]
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have
gained access (by faith) to this grace in which we stand, and we
boast in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we even
boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces
endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character,
hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has
been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has
been given to us. [ROM 5:1-5]
For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with
the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the
spirit with the things of the spirit. The concern of the flesh is
death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace. For the
concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit
to the law of God, nor can it; and those who are in the flesh
cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary,
you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin,
the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the
one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who
raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies
also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently,
brothers, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to
the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die,
but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you
              will live. [ROM 8:5-13]
If possible, on your part, live at peace with all. [ROM 12:18]
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of food and drink, but
of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit; whoever
serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by
others. Let us then pursue what leads to peace and to building up
              one another. [ROM 14:17-19]
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in
believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. [ROM 15:13]
I urge you, (brothers,) by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the
love of the Spirit, to join me in the struggle by your prayers to
God on my behalf, that I may be delivered from the disobedient in
Judea, and that my ministry for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the
holy ones, so that I may come to you with joy by the will of God
and be refreshed together with you. The God of peace be with all
              of you. Amen. [ROM 15:30-33]
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who create
dissensions and obstacles, in opposition to the teaching that you
learned; avoid them. For such people do not serve our Lord Christ
but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering speech they
deceive the hearts of the innocent. For while your obedience is
known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I want you to be wise as
to what is good, and simple as to what is evil; then the God of
peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our
Lord Jesus be with you. [ROM 16:17-20]
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
              Christ. [1COR 1:3]
If the unbeliever separates, however, let him separate. The
brother or sister is not bound in such cases; God has called you
              to peace. [1COR 7:15]
So what is to be done, brothers? When you assemble, one has a
psalm, another an instruction, a revelation, a tongue, or an
interpretation. Everything should be done for building up. If
anyone speaks in a tongue, let it be two or at most three, and
each in turn, and one should interpret. But if there is no
interpreter, the person should keep silent in the church and speak
to himself and to God. Two or three prophets should speak, and the
others discern. But if a revelation is given to another person
sitting there, the first one should be silent. For you can all
prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged.
Indeed, the spirits of prophets are under the prophets' control,
since he is not the God of disorder but of peace. As in all the
churches of the holy ones, women should keep silent in the
churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but should be
subordinate, as even the law says. But if they want to learn
anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is
improper for a woman to speak in the church. Did the word of God
go forth from you? Or has it come to you alone? If anyone thinks
that he is a prophet or a spiritual person, he should recognize
that what I am writing to you is a commandment of the Lord. If
anyone does not acknowledge this, he is not acknowledged. So, (my)
brothers, strive eagerly to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking
in tongues, but everything must be done properly and in order. [1COR
              14:26-40]
If Timothy comes, see that he is without fear in your company, for he is doing the work of the Lord just as I am. Therefore no one should disdain him. Rather, send him on his way in peace that he may come to me, for I am expecting him with the brothers. [1COR
              16:10-11]
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
              Christ. [Taken from 2COR 1:2]
Finally, brothers, rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one
another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of
love and peace will be with you. [2COR 13:11]
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
Christ, who gave himself for our sins that he might rescue us from
the present evil age in accord with the will of our God and
Father, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. [Taken from GAL
              1:3-5]
Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity,
licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy,
outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions,
occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn
you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will
not inherit the kingdom of God. In contrast, the fruit of the
Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no
              law. [GAL 5:19-23]
See with what large letters I am writing to you in my own hand!
It is those who want to make a good appearance in the flesh who
are trying to compel you to have yourselves circumcised, only that
they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those
having themselves circumcised observe the law themselves; they
only want you to be circumcised so that they may boast of your
flesh. But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus
Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to
the world. For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does
uncircumcision, but only a new creation. Peace and mercy be to all
who follow this rule and to the Israel of God. From now on, let no
one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my
              body. [GAL 6:11-17]
Therefore, remember that at one time you, Gentiles in the
flesh, called the uncircumcision by those called the circumcision,
which is done in the flesh by human hands, were at that time
without Christ, alienated from the community of Israel and
strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without
God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far
off have become near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace,
he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity,
through his flesh, abolishing the law with its commandments and
legal claims, that he might create in himself one new person in
place of the two, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile
both with God, in one body, through the cross, putting that enmity
to death by it. He came and preached peace to you who were far off
and peace to those who were near, for through him we both have
access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer
strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the
holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the
foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself
as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is held together
and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in him you also are
being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. [EPH
              2:11-22]
I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner
worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and
gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love,
striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of
peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one
hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and
Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. [EPH 4:1-6]
Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty
power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand
firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not
with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers,
with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil
spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that
you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done
everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins
girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and
your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all
circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming
arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the
sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. [EPH 6:10-17]
Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ in immortality.
              [EPH 6:23-24]
Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus, to all the holy ones in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the overseers and ministers:
grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
              Christ. [PHIL 1:1-2]
Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your
kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety
at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of
God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and
minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true,
whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any
excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about
these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and
heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you. [PHIL
              4:4-9]
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all
creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on
earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions
or principalities or powers; all things were created through him
and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold
together. He is the head of the body, the church. He is the
beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he
himself might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness was
pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him,
making peace by the blood of his cross (through him), whether
those on earth or those in heaven. And you who once were alienated
and hostile in mind because of evil deeds he has now reconciled in
his fleshly body through his death, to present you holy, without
blemish, and irreproachable before him, provided that you
persevere in the faith, firmly grounded, stable, and not shifting
from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been
preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, am a
              minister. [COL 1:15-23]
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing
with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance
against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also
do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of
perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the
peace into which you were also called in one body. And be
thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all
wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns,
and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And
whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of
the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. [COL
              3:12-17]
Concerning times and seasons, brothers, you have no need for
anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well
that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. When
people are saying, "Peace and security," then sudden
disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman,
and they will not escape. [1THES 5:1-3]
We ask you, brothers, to respect those who are laboring among you and who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you, and to show esteem for them with special love on account of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. [1THES
              5:12-13]
May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may
you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for
the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is
faithful, and he will also accomplish it. Brothers, pray for us
              (too). [1THES 5:23-25]
May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and
in every way. The Lord be with all of you. [2THES 3:16]
So turn from youthful desires and pursue righteousness, faith, love,
and peace, along with those who call on the Lord with purity of
              heart. [2TM 2:22]
Remind them to be under the control of magistrates and authorities, to be obedient, to be open to every good enterprise. They are to slander no one, to be peaceable, considerate, exercising all graciousness toward everyone.
              [TI 3:1-2]
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
              Christ. [PHLM 1:3]
This "Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most
High," "met Abraham as he returned from his defeat of
the kings" and "blessed him." And Abraham
apportioned to him "a tenth of everything." His name
first means righteous king, and he was also "king of
Salem," that is, king of peace. Without father, mother, or
ancestry, without beginning of days or end of life, thus made to
resemble the Son of God, he remains a priest forever. [HEB 7:1-3]
By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish with the disobedient,
for she had received the spies in peace. [HEB 11:31]
At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for
pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to
those who are trained by it. So strengthen your drooping hands and
your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, that what is
lame may not be dislocated but healed. Strive for peace with
everyone, and for that holiness without which no one will see the
              Lord. [HEB 12:11-14]
May the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep by the blood of the eternal covenant, Jesus our Lord, furnish you with all that is good, that you may do his will. May he carry out in you what is pleasing to him through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever (and ever). Amen.
              [Taken from HEB 13:20-21]
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but
does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or
sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of
you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat
well," but you do not give them the necessities of the body,
what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have
works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, "You have faith and
I have works." Demonstrate your faith to me without works,
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works. You believe
that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and
tremble. Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without
works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works
when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? You see that faith
was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the
works. Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham
believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,"
and he was called "the friend of God." See how a person
is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way,
was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she welcomed
the messengers and sent them out by a different route? For just as
a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is
              dead. [JMS 2:14-26]
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works
by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you
have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not
boast and be false to the truth. Wisdom of this kind does not come
down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where
jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every
foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure,
then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits,
without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness
is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. [JMS 3:13-18]
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen sojourners of
the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
in the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification by
the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling with the blood of Jesus
Christ: may grace and peace be yours in abundance. [1PT 1:1-2]
Finally, all of you, be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward
one another, compassionate, humble. Do not return evil for evil,
or insult for insult; but, on the contrary, a blessing, because to
this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing. For:
"Whoever would love life and see good days must keep the
tongue from evil and the lips from speaking deceit, must turn from
evil and do good, seek peace and follow after it. For the eyes of
the Lord are on the righteous and his ears turned to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against evildoers." [1PT 3:8-12]
Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who
              are in Christ. [1PT 5:14]
May grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of
God and of Jesus our Lord. [Taken from 2PT 1:2]
Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of
persons ought (you) to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and
devotion, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God,
because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the
elements melted by fire. But according to his promise we await new
heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore,
beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found
without spot or blemish before him, at peace. [2PT 3:11-14]
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and
from Jesus Christ the Father's Son in truth and love. [2JN 1:3]
Peace be with you. The friends greet you; greet the friends
there each by name. [3JN 1:15]
Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those
who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept safe for Jesus
Christ: may mercy, peace, and love be yours in abundance. [JUDE 1:1-2]
John, to the seven churches in Asia: grace to you and peace
from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven
spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful
witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the
earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his
blood, who has made us into a kingdom, priests for his God and
Father, to him be glory and power forever (and ever). Amen. [RV 1:4-6]
[Note: This does not mean that all Jesus' followers
share in the ministerial priesthood. As in the Old Testament,
(e.g. where God spoke to Moses: "You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation. That is what you must tell the
Israelites" - see EX 19:6) different classes of the
priesthood exist, including a general priesthood of followers
who can offer prayers, thanksgiving, etc. to God. The passage
above refers to this type of universal priesthood, which should
not be confused with the ministerial priesthood. For

              section.]
When he broke open the second seal, I heard the second living creature cry out, "Come forward." Another horse came out, a red one. Its rider was given power to take peace away from the earth, so that people would slaughter one another. And he was given a huge sword.
