my people in Egypt and have heard their cry of complaint against
their slave drivers, so I know well what they are suffering."

your God," he told them, "and do what is right in his
eyes: if you heed his commandments and keep all his precepts, I
will not afflict you with any of the diseases with which I
afflicted the Egyptians; for I, the LORD, am your healer." [EX 15:26]
Remember how for forty years now the LORD, your God,
has directed all your journeying in the desert, so as to test you
by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to
keep his commandments. He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and
then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers,
in order to show you that not by bread alone does man live, but by
every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD. [DEUT 8:23]
We cried to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and he
heard our cry and saw our affliction, our toil and our oppression.
[Taken from DEUT 26:7]

make it up to me with benefits for the curses he is uttering this
day. [2SAM 16:12]

then they repent of their sin, and pray, and praise your name in
this place listen in heaven and forgive the sin of your servant and of your people Israel, teaching them the right way to live
[Taken from 1KGS 8:35-36]

you, Who rescue the afflicted from the powerful, the afflicted and
needy from the despoiler?" [PS 35:10]

For the affliction of the proud man there is no
cure; he is the offshoot of an evil plant. [SIRACH 3:27]
For pride is the reservoir of sin, a source which
runs over with vice; Because of it God sends unheard-of
afflictions and brings men to utter ruin. [SIRACH 10:13]
A moment's affliction brings forgetfulness of past
delights; when a man dies, his life is revealed. [SIRACH 11:27]
A man who often swears heaps up obligations; the
scourge will never be far from his house. If he swears in error,
he incurs guilt; if he neglects his obligation, his sin is doubly
great. If he swears without reason he cannot be found just, and
all his house will suffer affliction. [SIRACH 23:11]
So it is with the afflicted man who groans at the
good things his eyes behold! Do not give in to sadness, torment not yourself with brooding;
Gladness of heart is the very life of man, cheerfulness prolongs his days.
Distract yourself, renew your courage, drive resentment far away from you;
For worry has brought death to many, nor is there aught to be gained from resentment.
[SIRACH 30:20-23]

his people find refuge." [ISA 14:32]

the furnace of affliction. [ISA 48:10]

forth into song, you mountains. For the LORD comforts his people

Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our
sufferings that he endured, While we thought of him as stricken,
as one smitten by God and afflicted. [ISA 53:4]
Because of his affliction he shall see the light in
fullness of days; Through his suffering, my servant shall justify
many, and their guilt he shall bear. [ISA 53:11]
O afflicted one, storm-battered and unconsoled, I lay
your pavements in carnelians, and your foundations in sapphires; I will make your battlements of rubies, your gates of carbuncles, and all your walls of precious stones. All your sons shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children. In justice shall you be established, far from the fear of oppression, where destruction cannot come near you.
[ISA 54:11-14]
If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy
the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and
the gloom shall become for you like midday [Taken from ISA 58:10]

be, says the LORD. This is the one whom I approve: the lowly and
afflicted man who trembles at my word. [ISA 66:2]

men. [LAM 3:33]

wounds." [HOSEA 6:1]

knowing that affliction produces endurance [ROM 5:3]

prayer. [ROM 12:12]
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and God of all
encouragement, who encourages us in our every affliction, so that we may be able to encourage those who are in any affliction with the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged by God. For as Christ's sufferings overflow to us, so through Christ
does our encouragement also overflow. If we are afflicted, it is for your encouragement and salvation; if we are encouraged, it is for your encouragement, which enables you to endure the same sufferings that we suffer.
[2COR 1:3-6]
For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I
wrote to you with many tears, not that you might be pained but
that you might know the abundant love I have for you. [2COR 2:4]
We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained;
perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed;
always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our
body. [2COR 4:8-10]
For this momentary light affliction is producing for
us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal.
[2COR 4:17-18]
We cause no one to stumble in anything, in order that no fault may be found with our ministry;
on the contrary, in everything we commend ourselves as
ministers of God, through much endurance, in afflictions,
hardships, constraints [2COR 6:3-4]
I have great confidence in you, I have great pride in
you; I am filled with encouragement, I am overflowing with joy all
the more because of all our affliction. [2COR 7:4]
So I ask you not to lose heart over my afflictions for
you; this is your glory. [EPH 3:13]
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in
my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of
Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church [COL 1:24]
And you became imitators of us and of the Lord,
receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy
Spirit [1THES 1:6]
We and sent Timothy, our brother and co-worker for God in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,
so that no one be disturbed in these afflictions. For
you yourselves know that we are destined for this. For even when we were among you, we used to warn you in advance that we would undergo affliction, just as has happened, as you know.
For this reason, when I too could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had put you to the test and our toil might come to nothing.
But just now Timothy has returned to us from you, bringing us the good news of your faith and love, and that you always think kindly of us and long to see us as we long to see you.
Because of this, we have been reassured about you, brothers, in our every distress and affliction, through your faith.
For we now live, if you stand firm in the Lord. [Taken from 1THES
3:2-8]
For it is surely just on God's part to repay with
afflictions those who are afflicting you, and to grant rest along with us to you who are undergoing afflictions, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels,
in blazing fire, inflicting punishment on those who do not acknowledge God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
These will pay the penalty of eternal ruin, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power,
when he comes to be glorified among his holy ones and to be marveled at on that day among all who have believed, for our testimony to you was believed.
[2THES 1:6-10]
