Am I a God near at hand only, says the LORD, and
not a God far off? Can a man hide in secret without my seeing him?
says the LORD. Do I not fill both heaven and earth? says the LORD.
[JER 23:23-24]
Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Like
these good figs, even so will I regard with favor Judah's exiles
whom I sent away from this place into the land of the Chaldeans. I
will look after them for their good, and bring them back to this
land, to build them up, not to tear them down; to plant them, not
to pluck them out. I will give them a heart with which to
understand that I am the LORD. They shall be my people and I will
be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart.
[Taken from JER 24:5-7]
I am the LORD, the God of all mankind! Is
anything impossible to me? [JER 32:27]
Why should any living man complain, any mortal,
in the face of his sins? Let us search and examine our ways that
we may return to the LORD! Let us reach out our hearts toward God
in heaven! [LAM 3:39-41]
"LORD Almighty, God of Israel, afflicted
souls and dismayed spirits call to you. Hear, O LORD, for you are
a God of mercy; and have mercy on us, who have sinned against you:
for you are enthroned forever, while we are perishing forever.
LORD Almighty, God of Israel, hear the prayer of Israel's few, the
sons of those who sinned against you; they did not heed the voice
of the LORD, their God, and the evils cling to us. Remember at
this time not the misdeeds of our fathers, but your own hand and
name: for you are the LORD our God; and you, O LORD, we will
praise! For this, you put into our hearts the fear of you: that we
may call upon your name, and praise you in our captivity, when we
have removed from our hearts all the wickedness of our fathers who
sinned against you. Behold us today in our captivity, where you
scattered us, a reproach, a curse, and a requital for all the
misdeeds of our fathers, who withdrew from the LORD, our
God." [BARUCH 3:1-8]
Had you walked in the way of God, you would have
dwelt in enduring peace. [BARUCH 3:13]
She is the book of the precepts of God, the law
that endures forever; All who cling to her will live, but those
will die who forsake her. [BARUCH 4:1]
Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death
of the wicked? says the Lord GOD. Do I not rather rejoice when he
turns from his evil way that he may live? [EZEK 18:23]
Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel,
each one according to his ways, says the Lord GOD. Turn and be
converted from all your crimes, that they may be no cause of guilt
for you. Cast away from you all the crimes you have committed, and
make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you
die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of
anyone who dies, says the Lord GOD. Return and live! [EZEK 18:30-32]
And you shall know that I am the LORD when I
deal with you thus, for my name's sake, and not according to your
evil conduct and corrupt actions, O house of Israel, says the Lord
GOD. [EZEK 20:44]
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you
have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, it is for you to
bear the penalty of your lewdness and harlotry. [EZEK 23:35]
Because you have sullied yourself with lewdness
when I would have purified you, and you refused to be purified of
your uncleanness, therefore you shall not be purified until I
wreak my fury on you. I, the LORD, have spoken; it is coming, for
I will bring it about without fail. I will not have pity nor
repent. By your conduct and your deeds you shall be judged, says
the Lord GOD. [EZEK 24:13-14]
Answer them: As I live, says the Lord GOD, I
swear I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked man, but
rather in the wicked man's conversion, that he may live. Turn,
turn from your evil ways! Why should you die, O house of Israel?
[EZEK 33:11]
For thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will look
after and tend my sheep. [EZEK 34:11]
I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will
give them rest, says the Lord GOD. [EZEK 34:15]
As for you, my sheep, says the Lord GOD, I will
judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats. [EZEK
34:17]
Not for your sakes do I act, says the Lord GOD -
let this be known to you! Be ashamed and abashed because of
your conduct, O house of Israel. [EZEK 36:32]
He asked me: Son of man, can these bones come to
life? "Lord GOD," I answered, "you alone know
that." Then he said to me: Prophesy over these bones, and say
to them: Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! Thus says the Lord
GOD to these bones: See! I will bring spirit into you, that you
may come to life. I will put sinews upon you, make flesh grow over
you, cover you with skin, and put spirit in you so that you may
come to life and know that I am the LORD. [EZEK 37:3-6]
Thus I will display my glory among the nations,
and all the nations shall see the judgment I have executed and the
hand I have laid upon them. From that day forward the house of
Israel shall know that I am the LORD, their God. The nations shall
know that because of its sins the house of Israel went into exile;
for they transgressed against me, and I hid my face from them and
handed them over to their foes, so that all of them fell by the
sword. According to their uncleanness and their transgressions I
dealt with them, hiding my face from them. Therefore, thus says
the Lord GOD: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have
pity on the whole house of Israel, and I will be jealous for my
holy name. They shall forget their disgrace and all the times they
broke faith with me, when they live in security on their land with
no one to frighten them. When I bring them back from among the
peoples, I will gather them from the lands of their enemies, and
will prove my holiness through them in the sight of many nations.
Thus they shall know that I, the LORD, am their God, since I who
exiled them among the nations, will gather them back on their
land, not leaving any of them behind. No longer will I hide my
face from them, for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of
Israel, says the Lord GOD. [EZEK 39:21-29]
During the night the mystery was revealed to
Daniel in a vision, and he blessed the God of heaven:
"Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and
power are his. He causes the changes of the times and seasons,
makes kings and unmakes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and
knowledge to those who understand. He reveals deep and hidden
things and knows what is in the darkness, for the light dwells
with him. To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise,
because you have given me wisdom and power. Now you have shown me
what we asked of you, you have made known to us the king's
dream." [DAN 2:19-23]
The assembly believed them, since they were
elders and judges of the people, and they condemned her to death.
But Susanna cried aloud: "O eternal God, you know what is
hidden and are aware of all things before they come to be: you
know that they have testified falsely against me. Here I am about
to die, though I have done none of the things with which these
wicked men have charged me." The Lord heard her prayer. [Taken
from DAN 13:41-44]
The LORD, the God of hosts, the LORD is his
name! [HOSEA 12:6]
The LORD raises his voice at the head of his
army; For immense indeed is his camp, yes, mighty, and it does his
bidding. For great is the day of the LORD, and exceedingly
terrible; who can bear it? Yet even now, says the LORD, return to
me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning;
Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your
God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in
kindness, and relenting in punishment. [JOEL 2:11-13]
The LORD has sworn by the pride of
Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done! Shall not
the land tremble because of this, and all who dwell in it
mourn, While it rises up and tosses like the Nile, and
settles back like the river of Egypt? On that day, says the Lord
GOD, I will make the sun set at midday and cover the
earth with darkness in broad daylight. I will turn your feasts
into mourning and all your songs into lamentations. I
will cover the loins of all with sackcloth and make every
head bald. I will make them mourn as for an only
son, and bring their day to a bitter end. Yes, days are coming,
says the Lord GOD, when I will send famine upon the
land: Not a famine of bread, or thirst for water, but
for hearing the word of the LORD. [AMOS 8:7-11]
The eyes of the Lord GOD are on this sinful
kingdom; I will destroy it from off the face of the earth. But I
will not destroy the house of Jacob completely, says the LORD.
[AMOS 9:8]
You have been told, O man, what is good, and
what the LORD requires of you: Only to do right and to love
goodness, and to walk humbly with your God. [MICAH 6:8]
Yet will I rejoice in the LORD and exult in my saving God. GOD, my Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet swift as those of hinds and enables me to go upon the heights. [HAB
3:18-19]
Silence in the presence of the Lord
GOD! for near is the day of the LORD, Yes, the LORD has
prepared a slaughter feast, he has consecrated his guests. On
the day of the LORD'S slaughter feast I will punish the
princes, and the king's sons, and all that dress in foreign
apparel. I will punish, on that day, all who leap over the
threshold, Who fill the house of their master with
violence and deceit. [ZEPH 1:7-9]
On that day You need not be ashamed of all your
deeds, your rebellious actions against me; For then will I remove
from your midst the proud braggarts, And you shall no longer exalt
yourself on my holy mountain. But I will leave as a remnant in
your midst a people humble and lowly, Who shall take refuge in the
name of the LORD; the remnant of Israel. They shall do no wrong
and speak no lies; Nor shall there be found in their mouths a
deceitful tongue; They shall pasture and couch their flocks with
none to disturb them. Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! sing
joyfully, O Israel! Be glad and exult with all your heart, O
daughter Jerusalem! The LORD has removed the judgment against you,
he has turned away your enemies; The King of Israel, the LORD, is
in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear. On that
day, it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion, be not
discouraged! The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty
savior; He will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in
his love, He will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at
festivals. I will remove disaster from among you, so that none may
recount your disgrace. [ZEPH 3:11-18]
For I hate divorce, says the LORD, the God of
Israel, And covering one's garment with injustice, says the LORD
of hosts; You must then safeguard life that is your own, and not
break faith. [MAL 2:16]
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came
about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before
they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to
expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his
intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to
take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and
you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from
their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had
said through the prophet: "Behold, the virgin shall be with
child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,"
which means "God is with us." When Joseph awoke, he did
as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into
his home. [MT 1:18-24]
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert
to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty
nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and
said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command that these
stones become loaves of bread." He said in reply, "It is
written: 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that
comes forth from the mouth of God.'" [MT 4:1-4]
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will
see God. [MT 5:8]
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be
called children of God. [MT 5:9]
"No one can serve two masters. He will
either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and
despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." [MT 6:24]
Then they brought to him a demoniac who was
blind and mute. He cured the mute person so that he could speak
and see. All the crowd was astounded, and said, "Could this
perhaps be the Son of David?" But when the Pharisees heard
this, they said, "This man drives out demons only by the
power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons." But [Jesus] knew
what they were thinking and said to them, "Every kingdom
divided against itself will be laid waste, and no town or house
divided against itself will stand. And if Satan drives out Satan,
he is divided against himself; how, then, will his kingdom stand?
And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people
drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is
by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of
God has come upon you. How can anyone enter a strong man's house
and steal his property, unless he first ties up the strong man?
Then he can plunder his house. Whoever is not with me is against
me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. Therefore, I say
to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but
blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever
speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever
speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in
this age or in the age to come." [Taken from MT 12:22-32]
When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea
Philippi he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the
Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the
Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the
prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I
am?" Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Messiah,
the Son of the living God." Jesus said to him in reply,
"Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has
not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to
you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and
the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will
give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on
earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth
shall be loosed in heaven." Then he strictly ordered his
disciples to tell no one that he was the Messiah. [MT 16:13-20]
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that
he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, "God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you."
He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."
[MT 16:21-23]
Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him,
saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any
cause whatever?" He said in reply, "Have you not read
that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female'
and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So
they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has
joined together, no human being must separate." They said to
him, "Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman
a bill of divorce and dismiss (her)?" He said to them,
"Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to
divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. I say to
you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful)
and marries another commits adultery." [MT 19:3-9]
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Amen, I
say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the
kingdom of heaven. Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to
pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter
the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this, they were
greatly astonished and said, "Who then can be saved?"
Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings this is
impossible, but for God all things are possible." [MT 19:23-26]
On that day Sadducees approached him, saying
that there is no resurrection. They put this question to him,
saying, "Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies without
children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up
descendants for his brother.' Now there were seven brothers among
us. The first married and died and, having no descendants, left
his wife to his brother. The same happened with the second and the
third, through all seven. Finally the woman died. Now at the
resurrection, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all
had been married to her." Jesus said to them in reply,
"You are misled because you do not know the scriptures or the
power of God. At the resurrection they neither marry nor are given
in marriage but are like the angels in heaven. And concerning the
resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you
by God, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of
Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."
When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching. [MT
22:23-33]
When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced
the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them (a scholar
of the law) tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment
in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "You shall
love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul,
and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first
commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor
as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two
commandments." [MT 22:34-40]
But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and
gave up his spirit. And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn
in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split,
tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen
asleep were raised. And coming forth from their tombs after his
resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. The
centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus
feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was
happening, and they said, "Truly, this was the Son of
God!" [MT 27:50-54]
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:
"This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."
[MK 1:14-15]
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the
paralytic, "Child, your sins are forgiven." Now some of
the scribes were sitting there asking themselves, "Why does
this man speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can
forgive sins?" Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they
were thinking to themselves, so he said, "Why are you
thinking such things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to
the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, pick up
your mat and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority to forgive sins on earth" - he said to the
paralytic, "I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go
home." He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away in
the sight of everyone. They were all astounded and glorified God,
saying, "We have never seen anything like this." [MK 2:5-12]
His mother and his brothers arrived. Standing
outside they sent word to him and called him. A crowd seated
around him told him, "Your mother and your brothers (and your
sisters) are outside asking for you." But he said to them in
reply, "Who are my mother and (my) brothers?" And
looking around at those seated in the circle he said, "Here
are my mother and my brothers. (For) whoever does the will of God
is my brother and sister and mother." [MK 3:31-35] [Note:
The above stresses that observance of God's word is more important
that a biological relationship with Jesus. Some ancient languages
have no word for cousin (and other relatives) so the term
"brothers" may be used to refer to relatives other than
blood brothers. The use of this terminology does not mean that
Jesus had blood brothers, which of course he didn't since Mary is
an ever virgin. For more information on this topic, visit the Non-Catholics
section.]
And when he was alone, those present along with
the Twelve questioned him about the parables. He answered them,
"The mystery of the kingdom of God has been granted to you.
But to those outside everything comes in parables, so that 'they
may look and see but not perceive, and hear and listen but not
understand, in order that they may not be converted and be
forgiven.'" [MK 4:10-12]
[Jesus said,] "Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the
kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." [Taken from
MK 10:15]
Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me
good? No one is good but God alone." [MK 10:18]
In the days of Herod, King of Judea, there was a
priest named Zechariah of the priestly division of Abijah; his
wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Both were righteous in the eyes of God, observing all the
commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly. But they had
no child, because Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in
years. Once when he was serving as priest in his division's turn
before God, according to the practice of the priestly service, he
was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord to burn
incense. Then, when the whole assembly of the people was praying
outside at the hour of the incense offering, the angel of the Lord
appeared to him, standing at the right of the altar of incense.
Zechariah was troubled by what he saw, and fear came upon him. But
the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because
your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a
son, and you shall name him John. And you will have joy and
gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great
in the sight of (the) Lord. He will drink neither wine nor strong
drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his
mother's womb, and he will turn many of the children of Israel to
the Lord their God. He will go before him in the spirit and power
of Elijah to turn the hearts of fathers toward children and the
disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to prepare a
people fit for the Lord." Then Zechariah said to the angel,
"How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is
advanced in years." And the angel said to him in reply,
"I am Gabriel, who stand before God. I was sent to speak to
you and to announce to you this good news. But now you will be
speechless and unable to talk until the day these things take
place, because you did not believe my words, which will be
fulfilled at their proper time." Meanwhile the people were
waiting for Zechariah and were amazed that he stayed so long in
the sanctuary. But when he came out, he was unable to speak to
them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the
sanctuary. He was gesturing to them but remained mute. Then, when
his days of ministry were completed, he went home. After this time
his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she went into seclusion for five
months, saying, "So has the Lord done for me at a time when
he has seen fit to take away my disgrace before others." [LK
1:5-25]
And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was
sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, To a virgin
espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David;
and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel being come in, said
unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art
thou among women. Who having heard, was troubled at his saying,
and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.
And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found
grace with God. Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt
bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be
great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord
God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he
shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever. And of his kingdom
there shall be no end. And Mary said to the angel: How shall this
be done, because I know not man? And the angel answering, said to
her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the
most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which
shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And behold
thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old
age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:
Because no word shall be impossible with God. And Mary said:
Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy
word. And the angel departed from her. [LK 1:26-38]
As they were proceeding on their journey someone
said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus
answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have
nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head." And
to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied,
"(Lord,) let me go first and bury my father." But he
answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and
proclaim the kingdom of God." And another said, "I will
follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at
home." (To him) Jesus said, "No one who sets a hand to
the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom
of God." [LK 9:57-62]
After this the Lord appointed seventy (-two)
others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place
he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is
abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the
harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way;
behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money
bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into
whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.' If
a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if
not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and
drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his
payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever
town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you,
cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at
hand for you.' Whatever town you enter and they do not receive
you, go out into the streets and say, 'The dust of your town that
clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.' Yet know
this: the kingdom of God is at hand. I tell you, it will be more
tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town." [LK 10:1-12]
Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them
has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.
[LK 12:6-7]
I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God.
But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.
[LK 12:8-9]
Then he told them a parable. "There was a
rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked
himself, 'What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my
harvest?' And he said, 'This is what I shall do: I shall tear down
my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain
and other goods and I shall say to myself, "Now as for you,
you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat,
drink, be merry!"' But God said to him, 'You fool, this night
your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have
prepared, to whom will they belong?' Thus will it be for the one
who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters
to God." [LK 12:16-21]
He said to (his) disciples, "Therefore I
tell you, do not worry about your life and what you will eat, or
about your body and what you will wear. For life is more than food
and the body more than clothing. Notice the ravens: they do not
sow or reap; they have neither storehouse nor barn, yet God feeds
them. How much more important are you than birds! Can any of you
by worrying add a moment to your lifespan? If even the smallest
things are beyond your control, why are you anxious about the
rest? Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin. But I
tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like
one of them. If God so clothes the grass in the field that grows
today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more
provide for you, O you of little faith? As for you, do not seek
what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not worry
anymore. All the nations of the world seek for these things, and
your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom,
and these other things will be given you besides. Do not be afraid
any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you
the kingdom. Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money
bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible
treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For
where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." [LK
12:22-34]
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to
be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the
light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the
darkness has not overcome it. A man named John was sent from God.
He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might
believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to
the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming
into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be
through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was
his own, but his own people did not accept him. But to those who
did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those
who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation
nor by human choice nor by a man's decision but of God. And the
Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his
glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and
truth. John testified to him and cried out, saying, "This was
he of whom I said, 'The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of
me because he existed before me.'" From his fullness we have
all received, grace in place of grace, because while the law was
given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No
one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father's
side, has revealed him. [JN 1:1-18]
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a
ruler of the Jews. He came to Jesus at night and said to him,
"Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God,
for no one can do these signs that you are doing unless God is
with him." Jesus answered and said to him, "Amen, amen,
I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born
from above." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a person
once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his
mother's womb and be born again, can he?" Jesus answered,
"Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of
God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of flesh
is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed
that I told you, 'You must be born from above.' The wind blows
where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do
not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with
everyone who is born of the Spirit." Nicodemus answered and
said to him, "How can this happen?" Jesus answered and
said to him, "You are the teacher of Israel and you do not
understand this? Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we
know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not
accept our testimony. If I tell you about earthly things and you
do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly
things? No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come
down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the
serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so
that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life." For
God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone
who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in
him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has
already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of
the only Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came
into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because
their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates
the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works
might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the
light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. [JN
3:1-21]
The one who comes from above is above all. The
one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things.
But the one who comes from heaven (is above all). He testifies to
what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.
Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is
trustworthy. For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He
does not ration his gift of the Spirit. The Father loves the Son
and has given everything over to him. Whoever believes in the Son
has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life,
but the wrath of God remains upon him. [JN 3:31-36]
Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the
hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this
mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not
understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is
from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true
worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed
the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and
those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth." The
woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the
one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us
everything." Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is
speaking with you." [JN 4:21-26]
Therefore, the Jews began to persecute Jesus because he did this on a sabbath.
But Jesus answered them, "My Father is at work until now, so I am at work."
For this reason the Jews tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but he also called God his own father, making himself equal to God.
[JN 5:16-18]
Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in
him, "If you remain in my word, you will truly be my
disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you
free." They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham
and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will
become free'?" Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say
to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. A slave does
not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. So if
a son frees you, then you will truly be free. I know that you are
descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me, because my
word has no room among you. I tell you what I have seen in the
Father's presence; then do what you have heard from the
Father." They answered and said to him, "Our father is
Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's
children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. But now you are
trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard
from God; Abraham did not do this. You are doing the works of your
father!" (So) they said to him, "We are not
illegitimate. We have one Father, God." Jesus said to them,
"If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from
God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me. Why do
you not understand what I am saying? Because you cannot bear to
hear my word. You belong to your father the devil and you
willingly carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from
the beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no
truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because
he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I speak the
truth, you do not believe me. Can any of you charge me with sin?
If I am telling the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever
belongs to God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not
listen, because you do not belong to God." The Jews answered
and said to him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a
Samaritan and are possessed?" Jesus answered, "I am not
possessed; I honor my Father, but you dishonor me. I do not seek
my own glory; there is one who seeks it and he is the one who
judges. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never
see death." (So) the Jews said to him, "Now we are sure
that you are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you
say, 'Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.' Are you
greater than our father Abraham, who died? Or the prophets, who
died? Who do you make yourself out to be?" Jesus answered,
"If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my
Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.' You do
not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not
know him, I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep
his word. Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it
and was glad." So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet
fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?" Jesus said to
them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I
AM." So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid
and went out of the temple area. [JN 8:31-59]
Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a
sabbath. So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to
see. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed,
and now I can see." So some of the Pharisees said, "This
man is not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath."
(But) others said, "How can a sinful man do such signs?"
And there was a division among them. So they said to the blind man
again, "What do you have to say about him, since he opened
your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet." Now the
Jews did not believe that he had been blind and gained his sight
until they summoned the parents of the one who had gained his
sight. They asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was
born blind? How does he now see?" His parents answered and
said, "We know that this is our son and that he was born
blind. We do not know how he sees now, nor do we know who opened
his eyes. Ask him, he is of age; he can speak for him self."
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for
the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged him as the
Messiah, he would be expelled from the synagogue. For this reason
his parents said, "He is of age; question him." So a
second time they called the man who had been blind and said to
him, "Give God the praise! We know that this man is a
sinner." He replied, "If he is a sinner, I do not know.
One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see." So
they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open
your eyes?" He answered them, "I told you already and
you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want
to become his disciples, too?" They ridiculed him and said,
"You are that man's disciple; we are disciples of Moses! We
know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this one is
from." The man answered and said to them, "This is what
is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he
opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but
if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him. It is
unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born
blind. If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do
anything." [JN 9:14-33]
Nevertheless, many, even among the authorities, believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not acknowledge it openly in order not to be expelled from the synagogue. For they preferred human praise to the glory of God.
[JN 12:42-43]
Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that
his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved
his own in the world and he loved them to the end. The devil had
already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him
over. So, during supper, fully aware that the Father had put
everything into his power and that he had come from God and was
returning to God, he rose from supper and took off his outer
garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he
poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet
and dry them with the towel around his waist. He came to Simon
Peter, who said to him, "Master, are you going to wash my
feet?" Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing,
you do not understand now, but you will understand later."
Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus
answered him, "Unless I wash you, you will have no
inheritance with me." Simon Peter said to him, "Master,
then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well." Jesus
said to him, "Whoever has bathed has no need except to have
his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but
not all." For he knew who would betray him; for this reason,
he said, "Not all of you are clean." So when he had
washed their feet (and) put his garments back on and reclined at
table again, he said to them, "Do you realize what I have
done for you? You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so,
for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have
washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have
given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you
should also do. Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than
his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. If
you understand this, blessed are you if you do it. I am not
speaking of all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But so
that the scripture might be fulfilled, 'The one who ate my food
has raised his heel against me.' From now on I am telling you
before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I
AM. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send
receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent
me." [JN 13:1-20]
Until now you have not asked anything in my
name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
"I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is
coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will
tell you clearly about the Father. On that day you will ask in my
name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.
For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and
have come to believe that I came from God. I came from the Father
and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going
back to the Father." His disciples said, "Now you are
talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize
that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone
question you. Because of this we believe that you came from
God." Jesus answered them, "Do you believe now? Behold,
the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be
scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am
not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you this so
that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have
trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world." [JN
16:24-33]
Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was
not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him,
"We have seen the Lord." But he said to them,
"Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my
finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will
not believe." Now a week later his disciples were again
inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors
were locked, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be
with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here
and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and
do not be unbelieving, but believe." Thomas answered and said
to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him,
"Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed
are those who have not seen and have believed." [JN 20:24-29]
"You who are Israelites, hear these words.
Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God with mighty
deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your
midst, as you yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the set
plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to
crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes
of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it. For
David says of him: 'I saw the Lord ever before me, with him at my
right hand I shall not be disturbed. Therefore my heart has been
glad and my tongue has exulted; my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will
you suffer your holy one to see corruption. You have made known to
me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
My brothers, one can confidently say to you about the patriarch
David that he died and was buried, and his tomb is in our midst to
this day. But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn
an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his
throne, he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah,
that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld nor did his flesh
see corruption. God raised this Jesus; of this we are all
witnesses. Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the
promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured it forth, as
you (both) see and hear. For David did not go up into heaven, but
he himself said: 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right
hand until I make your enemies your footstool."' Therefore
let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made
him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified."
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they
asked Peter and the other apostles, "What are we to do, my
brothers?" Peter (said) to them, "Repent and be
baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all
those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call." He
testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them,
"Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." Those
who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand
persons were added that day. [ACTS 2:22-41]
They devoted themselves to the teaching of the
apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread
and to the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and
signs were done through the apostles. All who believed were
together and had all things in common; they would sell their
property and possessions and divide them among all according to
each one's need. Every day they devoted themselves to meeting
together in the temple area and to breaking bread in their homes.
They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart,
praising God and enjoying favor with all the people. And every day
the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. [ACTS
2:42-47]
As he clung to Peter and John, all the people
hurried in amazement toward them in the portico called
"Solomon's Portico." When Peter saw this, he addressed
the people, "You Israelites, why are you amazed at this, and
why do you look so intently at us as if we had made him walk by
our own power or piety? The God of Abraham, (the God) of Isaac,
and (the God) of Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified
his servant Jesus whom you handed over and denied in Pilate's
presence, when he had decided to release him. You denied the Holy
and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you.
The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the
dead; of this we are witnesses. And by faith in his name, this
man, whom you see and know, his name has made strong, and the
faith that comes through it has given him this perfect health, in
the presence of all of you. Now I know, brothers, that you acted
out of ignorance, just as your leaders did; but God has thus
brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through
the mouth of all the prophets, that his Messiah would suffer.
Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped
away, and that the Lord may grant you times of refreshment and
send you the Messiah already appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven
must receive until the times of universal restoration of which God
spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old. For
Moses said: 'A prophet like me will the Lord, your God, raise up
for you from among your own kinsmen; to him you shall listen in
all that he may say to you. Everyone who does not listen to that
prophet will be cut off from the people.' Moreover, all the
prophets who spoke, from Samuel and those afterwards, also
announced these days. You are the children of the prophets and of
the covenant that God made with your ancestors when he said to
Abraham, 'In your offspring all the families of the earth shall be
blessed.' For you first, God raised up his servant and sent him to
bless you by turning each of you from your evil ways." [ACTS
3:11-26]
When they had brought them in and made them
stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest questioned them,
"We gave you strict orders (did we not?) to stop teaching in
that name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and
want to bring this man's blood upon us." But Peter and the
apostles said in reply, "We must obey God rather than men.
The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed
by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as
leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of
sins. We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit that
God has given to those who obey him." When they heard this,
they became infuriated and wanted to put them to death. But a
Pharisee in the Sanhedrin named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law,
respected by all the people, stood up, ordered the men to be put
outside for a short time, and said to them, "Fellow
Israelites, be careful what you are about to do to these men. Some
time ago, Theudas appeared, claiming to be someone important, and
about four hundred men joined him, but he was killed, and all
those who were loyal to him were disbanded and came to nothing.
After him came Judas the Galilean at the time of the census. He
also drew people after him, but he too perished and all who were
loyal to him were scattered. So now I tell you, have nothing to do
with these men, and let them go. For if this endeavor or this
activity is of human origin, it will destroy itself. But if it
comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them; you may even
find yourselves fighting against God." They were persuaded by
him. After recalling the apostles, they had them flogged, ordered
them to stop speaking in the name of Jesus, and dismissed them. So
they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had
been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name. And
all day long, both at the temple and in their homes, they did not
stop teaching and proclaiming the Messiah, Jesus. [ACTS 5:27-42]
Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, "In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him."
[ACTS 10:34-35]
Then Paul stood up at the Areopagus and said:
"You Athenians, I see that in every respect you are very
religious. For as I walked around looking carefully at your
shrines, I even discovered an altar inscribed, 'To an Unknown
God.' What therefore you unknowingly worship, I proclaim to you.
The God who made the world and all that is in it, the Lord of
heaven and earth, does not dwell in sanctuaries made by human
hands, nor is he served by human hands because he needs anything.
Rather it is he who gives to everyone life and breath and
everything. He made from one the whole human race to dwell on the
entire surface of the earth, and he fixed the ordered seasons and
the boundaries of their regions, so that people might seek God,
even perhaps grope for him and find him, though indeed he is not
far from any one of us. For 'In him we live and move and have our
being,' as even some of your poets have said, 'For we too are his
offspring.' Since therefore we are the offspring of God, we ought
not to think that the divinity is like an image fashioned from
gold, silver, or stone by human art and imagination. God has
overlooked the times of ignorance, but now he demands that all
people everywhere repent because he has established a day on which
he will 'judge the world with justice' through a man he has
appointed, and he has provided confirmation for all by raising him
from the dead." When they heard about resurrection of the
dead, some began to scoff, but others said, "We should like
to hear you on this some other time." And so Paul left them.
But some did join him, and became believers. Among them were
Dionysius, a member of the Court of the Areopagus, a woman named Damaris, and others with them. [ACTS 17:22-34]
Then the governor motioned to him to speak and
Paul replied, "I know that you have been a judge over this
nation for many years and so I am pleased to make my defense
before you. As you can verify, not more than twelve days have
passed since I went up to Jerusalem to worship. Neither in the
temple, nor in the synagogues, nor anywhere in the city did they
find me arguing with anyone or instigating a riot among the
people. Nor can they prove to you the accusations they are now
making against me. But this I do admit to you, that according to
the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our
ancestors and I believe everything that is in accordance with the
law and written in the prophets. I have the same hope in God as
they themselves have that there will be a resurrection of the
righteous and the unrighteous. Because of this, I always strive to
keep my conscience clear before God and man." [Taken from
ACTS 24:10-16]
For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: for Jew first, and then Greek.
For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith;
as it is written, "The one who is righteous by faith will live."
[ROM 1:16-17]
The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from
heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress
the truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is
evident to them, because God made it evident to them. Ever since
the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal
power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived
in what he has made. As a result, they have no excuse; for
although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or
give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and
their senseless minds were darkened. While claiming to be wise,
they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for
the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of
four-legged animals or of snakes. Therefore, God handed them over
to impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual
degradation of their bodies. They exchanged the truth of God for a
lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the
creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. Therefore, God handed them
over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural
relations for unnatural, and the males likewise gave up natural
relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males
did shameful things with males and thus received in their own
persons the due penalty for their perversity. And since they did
not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their
undiscerning mind to do what is improper. They are filled with
every form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy,
murder, rivalry, treachery, and spite. They are gossips and
scandalmongers and they hate God. They are insolent, haughty,
boastful, ingenious in their wickedness, and rebellious toward
their parents. They are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
Although they know the just decree of God that all who practice
such things deserve death, they not only do them but give approval
to those who practice them. [ROM 1:18-32]
Therefore, you are without excuse, every one of
you who passes judgment. For by the standard by which you judge
another you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the very
same things. We know that the judgment of God on those who do such
things is true. Do you suppose, then, you who judge those who
engage in such things and yet do them yourself, that you will
escape the judgment of God? Or do you hold his priceless kindness,
forbearance, and patience in low esteem, unaware that the kindness
of God would lead you to repentance? By your stubbornness and
impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself for the
day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God, who will
repay everyone according to his works: eternal life to those who
seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good
works, but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth
and obey wickedness. Yes, affliction and distress will come upon
every human being who does evil, Jew first and then Greek. But
there will be glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good,
Jew first and then Greek. There is no partiality with God. [ROM
2:1-11]
All who sin outside the law will also perish
without reference to it, and all who sin under the law will be
judged in accordance with it. For it is not those who hear the law
who are just in the sight of God; rather, those who observe the
law will be justified. For when the Gentiles who do not have the
law by nature observe the prescriptions of the law, they are a law
for themselves even though they do not have the law. They show
that the demands of the law are written in their hearts, while
their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts
accuse or even defend them on the day when, according to my
gospel, God will judge people's hidden works through Christ Jesus.
[ROM 2:12-16]
You who boast of the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?
[ROM 2:23]
What advantage is there then in being a Jew? Or
what is the value of circumcision? Much, in every respect. (For)
in the first place, they were entrusted with the utterances of
God. What if some were unfaithful? Will their infidelity nullify
the fidelity of God? Of course not! God must be true, though every
human being is a liar, as it is written: "That you may be
justified in your words, and conquer when you are judged."
But if our wickedness provides proof of God's righteousness, what
can we say? Is God unjust, humanly speaking, to inflict his wrath?
Of course not! For how else is God to judge the world? But if
God's truth redounds to his glory through my falsehood, why am I
still being condemned as a sinner? And why not say - as we are
accused and as some claim we say - that we should do evil that
good may come of it? Their penalty is what they deserve. [ROM
3:1-8]
But now the righteousness of God has been
manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and
the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus
Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; all have
sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. They are justified
freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, whom
God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood, to
prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins
previously committed, through the forbearance of God - to prove
his righteousness in the present time, that he might be righteous
and justify the one who has faith in Jesus. What occasion is there
then for boasting? It is ruled out. On what principle, that of
works? No, rather on the principle of faith. [ROM 3:21-27]
For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet
died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with
difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a
good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his
love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for
us. How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood,
will we be saved through him from the wrath. Indeed, if, while we
were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his
Son, how much more, once reconciled, will we be saved by his life.
Not only that, but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. [ROM 5:6-11]
But the gift is not like the transgression. For
if by that one person's transgression the many died, how much more
did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one person Jesus
Christ overflow for the many. [ROM 5:15]
We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies
no more; death no longer has power over him. As to his death, he
died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God.
Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as (being) dead to
sin and living for God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, sin must not
reign over your mortal bodies so that you obey their desires. And
do not present the parts of your bodies to sin as weapons for
wickedness, but present yourselves to God as raised from the dead
to life and the parts of your bodies to God as weapons for
righteousness. For sin is not to have any power over you, since
you are not under the law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin
because we are not under the law but under grace? Of course not!
Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as
obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of
sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to
righteousness? But thanks be to God that, although you were once
slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the heart to the
pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted. Freed from sin,
you have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human
terms because of the weakness of your nature. For just as you
presented the parts of your bodies as slaves to impurity and to
lawlessness for lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to
righteousness for sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin,
you were free from righteousness. But what profit did you get then
from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those
things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and
have become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to
sanctification, and its end is eternal life. For the wages of sin
is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord. [ROM 6:9-23]
For those who live according to the flesh are
concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live
according to the spirit with the things of the spirit. The concern
of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life and
peace. For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it
does not submit to the law of God, nor can it; and those who are
in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on
the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God
dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not
belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead
because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If
the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in
you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to
your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you.
Consequently, brothers, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live
according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh,
you will die, but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of
the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of
God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of
slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of
adoption, through which we cry, "Abba, Father!" The
Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children
of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs
with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be
glorified with him. [ROM 8:5-17]
We know that all things work for good for those
who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those
he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of
his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he
also justified; and those he justified he also glorified. What
then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against
us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us
all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him?
Who will bring a charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who
acquits us. Who will condemn? It is Christ (Jesus) who died,
rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who
indeed intercedes for us. What will separate us from the love of
Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or
nakedness, or peril, or the sword?... No, in all these things we
conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am
convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers,
nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to
separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. [Taken
from ROM 8:28-35,37-39]
But it is not that the word of God has failed.
For not all who are of Israel are Israel, nor are they all
children of Abraham because they are his descendants; but "It
is through Isaac that descendants shall bear your name." This
means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the
children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as
descendants. For this is the wording of the promise, "About
this time I shall return and Sarah will have a son." And not
only that, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one
husband, our father Isaac - before they had yet been born or had
done anything, good or bad, in order that God's elective plan
might continue, not by works but by his call - she was told,
"The older shall serve the younger." As it is written:
"I loved Jacob but hated Esau." What then are we to say?
Is there injustice on the part of God? Of course not! For he says
to Moses: "I will show mercy to whom I will, I will take pity
on whom I will." So it depends not upon a person's will or
exertion, but upon God, who shows mercy. For the scripture says to
Pharaoh, "This is why I have raised you up, to show my power
through you that my name may be proclaimed throughout the
earth." Consequently, he has mercy upon whom he wills, and he
hardens whom he wills. You will say to me then, "Why (then)
does he still find fault? For who can oppose his will?" But
who indeed are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Will what
is made say to its maker, "Why have you created me so?"
Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make out of
the same lump one vessel for a noble purpose and another for an
ignoble one? What if God, wishing to show his wrath and make known
his power, has endured with much patience the vessels of wrath
made for destruction? This was to make known the riches of his
glory to the vessels of mercy, which he has prepared previously
for glory, namely, us whom he has called, not only from the Jews
but also from the Gentiles. [ROM 9:6-24]
Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God on
their behalf is for salvation. I testify with regard to them that
they have zeal for God, but it is not discerning. For, in their
unawareness of the righteousness that comes from God and their
attempt to establish their own (righteousness), they did not
submit to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the
law for the justification of everyone who has faith. Moses writes
about the righteousness that comes from (the) law, "The one
who does these things will live by them." But the
righteousness that comes from faith says, "Do not say in your
heart, 'Who will go up into heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ
down) or 'Who will go down into the abyss?' (that is, to bring
Christ up from the dead)." But what does it say? "The
word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is,
the word of faith that we preach), for, if you confess with your
mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised
him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the
heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so
is saved. [ROM 10:1-10] [Note: It should be noted that at the
time this text was written, confessing Jesus as Lord was hazardous
to the life and health of the believer. This passage should
not be taken to mean that believers have an automatic "free
ticket" to heaven simply because they believe and state that
Jesus is Lord. The devil himself believes that Jesus is
Lord. And, of course, Jesus says in MT 7:21 that "Not
everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of
heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in
heaven." The bible makes it clear that believers are expected
to refrain from (and repent of) sin in order that Jesus'
redemptive act can ultimately be fruitful for their salvation.
Believers can lose salvation - for an example of
this, see HEB 10:26-27 "If we sin deliberately after receiving knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains sacrifice for sins but a fearful prospect of judgment and a flaming fire that is going to consume the
adversaries". Further, our Lord stated that the
sacraments (e.g. baptism, Eucharist) are necessary for
salvation. For further discussion on this issue, please visit the non-Catholics
section.]
I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Of
course not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of
the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he
foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah,
how he pleads with God against Israel? "Lord, they have
killed your prophets, they have torn down your altars, and I alone
am left, and they are seeking my life." But what is God's
response to him? "I have left for myself seven thousand men
who have not knelt to Baal." So also at the present time
there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if by grace, it is no
longer because of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
What then? What Israel was seeking it did not attain, but the
elect attained it; the rest were hardened, as it is written:
"God gave them a spirit of deep sleep, eyes that should not
see and ears that should not hear, down to this very day."
And David says: "Let their table become a snare and a trap, a
stumbling block and a retribution for them; let their eyes grow
dim so that they may not see, and keep their backs bent
forever." Hence I ask, did they stumble so as to fall? Of
course not! But through their transgression salvation has come to
the Gentiles, so as to make them jealous. Now if their
transgression is enrichment for the world, and if their diminished
number is enrichment for the Gentiles, how much more their full
number. Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am
the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in order to
make my race jealous and thus save some of them. For if their
rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their
acceptance be but life from the dead? If the firstfruits are holy,
so is the whole batch of dough; and if the root is holy, so are
the branches. But if some of the branches were broken off, and
you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place and have come
to share in the rich root of the olive tree, do not boast against
the branches. If you do boast, consider that you do not support
the root; the root supports you. Indeed you will say,
"Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted
in." That is so. They were broken off because of unbelief,
but you are there because of faith. So do not become haughty, but
stand in awe. For if God did not spare the natural branches,
(perhaps) he will not spare you either. See, then, the kindness
and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but God's
kindness to you, provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise
you too will be cut off. And they also, if they do not remain in
unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in
again. For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive
tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated one, how
much more will they who belong to it by nature be grafted back
into their own olive tree. [ROM 11:1-24]
For the gifts and the call of God are
irrevocable. [ROM 11:29]
Just as you once disobeyed God but have now
received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now
disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they
too may (now) receive mercy. For God delivered all to
disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all. Oh, the depth of
the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are
his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! "For who has
known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?"
"Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?"
For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be
glory forever. Amen. [ROM 11:30-36]
I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies
of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and
pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be
transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what
is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. [ROM
12:1-2]
Let every person be subordinate to the higher
authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those
that exist have been established by God. Therefore, whoever
resists authority opposes what God has appointed, and those who
oppose it will bring judgment upon themselves. For rulers are not
a cause of fear to good conduct, but to evil. Do you wish to have
no fear of authority? Then do what is good and you will receive
approval from it, for it is a servant of God for your good. But if
you do evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword without
purpose; it is the servant of God to inflict wrath on the
evildoer. Therefore, it is necessary to be subject not only
because of the wrath but also because of conscience. [ROM 13:1-5]
None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies
for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die,
we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the
Lord's. For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he
might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Why then do you
judge your brother? Or you, why do you look down on your brother?
For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is
written: "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bend
before me, and every tongue shall give praise to God." So
(then) each of us shall give an account of himself (to God). [ROM
14:7-12]
May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony
with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[ROM 15:5-6]
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who
create dissensions and obstacles, in opposition to the teaching
that you learned; avoid them. For such people do not serve our
Lord Christ but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering
speech they deceive the hearts of the innocent. For while your
obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I want you
to be wise as to what is good, and simple as to what is evil; then
the God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The
grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. [ROM 16:17-20]
God is faithful, and by him you were called to
fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. [1COR 1:9]
The message of the cross is foolishness to those
who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power
of God. For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the
wise, and the learning of the learned I will set aside."
Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater
of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish? For
since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God
through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of
the proclamation to save those who have faith. For Jews demand
signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ
crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the
power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is
wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than
human strength. Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of
you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many
were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to
shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the
strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those
who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are
something, so that no human being might boast before God. It is
due to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom
from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and
redemption, so that, as it is written, "Whoever boasts,
should boast in the Lord." [1COR 1:18-31]
Yet we do speak a wisdom to those who are
mature, but not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this
age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God's wisdom,
mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for
our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for if
they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of
glory. But as it is written: "What eye has not seen, and ear
has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God
has prepared for those who love him," this God has revealed
to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything,
even the depths of God. Among human beings, who knows what
pertains to a person except the spirit of the person that is
within? Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the
Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but
the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the things
freely given us by God. [1COR 2:6-12]
Brothers, I could not talk to you as spiritual
people, but as fleshly people, as infants in Christ. I fed you
milk, not solid food, because you were unable to take it. Indeed,
you are still not able, even now, for you are still of the flesh.
While there is jealousy and rivalry among you, are you not of the
flesh, and behaving in an ordinary human way? Whenever someone
says, "I belong to Paul," and another, "I belong to
Apollos," are you not merely human? What is Apollos, after
all, and what is Paul? Ministers through whom you became
believers, just as the Lord assigned each one. I planted, Apollos
watered, but God caused the growth. Therefore, neither the one who
plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who
causes the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters are
equal, and each will receive wages in proportion to his labor. For
we are God's co-workers; you are God's field, God's building.
According to the grace of God given to me, like a wise master
builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it. But
each one must be careful how he builds upon it, for no one can lay
a foundation other than the one that is there, namely, Jesus
Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver,
precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, the work of each will come
to light, for the Day will disclose it. It will be revealed with
fire, and the fire (itself) will test the quality of each one's
work. If the work stands that someone built upon the foundation,
that person will receive a wage. But if someone's work is burned
up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only
as through fire. Do you not know that you are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's
temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which
you are, is holy. Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you
considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool so as to
become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the
eyes of God, for it is written: "He catches the wise in their
own ruses," and again: "The Lord knows the thoughts of
the wise, that they are vain." [1COR 3:1-20]
