But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in
you. May those who long for your help always say, "God be
glorified!" [PS 70:5]
Here I am, afflicted and poor. God, come
quickly! You are my help and deliverer. LORD, do not delay! [PS
70:6]
Be my rock and refuge, my secure
stronghold; for you are my rock and fortress. My God, rescue
me from the power of the wicked, from the clutches of the
violent. You are my hope, Lord; my trust, GOD, from my youth.
On you I depend since birth; from my mother's womb you are my
strength; my hope in you never wavers. I have become a
portent to many, but you are my strong refuge! My mouth shall
be filled with your praise, shall sing your glory every day.
[PS 71:3-8]
God, do not stand far from me; my God, hasten to
help me. [PS 71:12]
My mouth shall proclaim your just deeds, day after day your acts of deliverance, though I cannot number them all. I will speak of the mighty works of the Lord; O GOD, I will tell of your singular justice. [PS
71:15-16]
God, you have taught me from my youth; to
this day I proclaim your wondrous deeds. Now that I am old and
gray, do not forsake me, God, That I may proclaim your
might to all generations yet to come, Your power and justice,
God, to the highest heaven. You have done great
things; O God, who is your equal? [PS 71:17-19]
Restore my honor; turn and comfort me, That I may praise you with the lyre for your faithfulness, my God, And sing to you with the
harp, O Holy One of Israel! [PS 71:21-22]
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who
alone does wonderful deeds. [PS 72:18]
How good God is to the
upright, the Lord, to those who are clean of heart! [PS 73:1]
They say, "Does God really
know?" "Does the Most High have any
knowledge?" Such, then, are the wicked, always carefree,
increasing their wealth. Is it in vain that I have kept my heart
clean, washed my hands in innocence? For I am afflicted day
after day, chastised every morning. Had I thought, "I
will speak as they do," I would have betrayed your
people. Though I tried to understand all this, it was too
difficult for me, Till I entered the sanctuary of God and
came to understand their end. You set them, indeed, on a slippery
road; you hurl them down to ruin. How suddenly they are
devastated; undone by disasters forever! They are like a
dream after waking, Lord, dismissed like shadows when you
arise. [PS 73:11-20]
Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is
the rock of my heart, my portion forever. But those who are far
from you perish; you destroy those unfaithful to you. As for
me, to be near God is my good, to make the Lord GOD my
refuge. I shall declare all your works in the gates of
daughter Zion. [PS 73:26-28]
Why, God, have you cast us
off forever? Why does your anger burn against the sheep of your
pasture? [PS 74:1]
How long, O God, shall the enemy jeer? Shall the
foe revile your name forever? [PS 74:10]
Look to your covenant, for the land is
filled with gloom; the pastures, with violence. Let not the
oppressed turn back in shame; may the poor and needy praise
your name. Arise, God, defend your cause; remember the
constant jeers of the fools. Do not ignore the clamor of your
foes, the unceasing uproar of your enemies. [PS 74:20-23]
For judgment comes not from east or from
west, not from the desert or from the mountains, But from God
who decides, who brings some low and raises others high. Yes,
a cup is in the LORD'S hand, foaming wine, fully spiced. When
God pours it out, they will drain it even to the
dregs; all the wicked of the earth must drink. [PS 75:7-9]
But I will rejoice forever; I will sing praise
to the God of Jacob [Taken from PS 75:10]
Renowned in Judah is God, whose name is great
in Israel. [PS 76:2]
On Salem is God's tent, a shelter on Zion. [PS
76:3]
So terrible and awesome are you; who can
stand before you and your great anger? From the heavens you
pronounced sentence; the earth was terrified and reduced to
silence, When you arose, O God, for judgment to deliver the
afflicted of the land. [PS 76:8-10]
Make and keep vows to the LORD your God. May all present bring gifts to this awesome God,
Who checks the pride of princes, inspires awe among the kings of earth.
[PS 76:12-13]
I cry aloud to God, cry to God to hear me. On the day of my distress I seek the Lord; by night my hands are raised unceasingly; I refuse to be consoled. [PS
77:2-3]
God set up a decree in Jacob, established a
law in Israel: What he commanded our ancestors, they
were to teach their children; That the next generation might come
to know, children yet to be born. In turn they were to
recite them to their children, that they too might put their trust
in God, And not forget the works of God, keeping his
commandments. They were not to be like their ancestors, a
rebellious and defiant generation, A generation whose heart
was not constant, whose spirit was not faithful to God, Like
the ranks of Ephraimite archers, who retreated on the day of
battle. They did not keep God's covenant; they refused to
walk by his law. They forgot his works, the wondrous deeds he
had shown them. [PS 78:5-11]
The LORD heard and grew angry; fire blazed
up against Jacob; anger flared up against Israel. For they did not
believe in God, did not trust in his saving power. [PS 78:21-22]
God ended their days abruptly, their years
in sudden death. When he slew them, they began to seek
him; they again inquired of their God. They remembered that
God was their rock, God Most High, their redeemer. But they
deceived him with their mouths, lied to him with their
tongues. Their hearts were not constant toward him; they were
not faithful to his covenant. But God is merciful and forgave
their sin; he did not utterly destroy them. Time and
again he turned back his anger, unwilling to unleash all his
rage. [PS 78:33-38]
Again and again they tested God, provoked the
Holy One of Israel. [PS 78:41]
God drove out the nations before
them, apportioned them a heritage by lot, settled the
tribes of Israel in their tents. But they tested, rebelled against
God Most High, his decrees they did not observe. They turned
back, deceitful like their ancestors; they proved false like
a bow with no tension. They enraged him with their high
places; with their idols they goaded him. God heard and grew
angry; he rejected Israel completely. He forsook the shrine
at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt with humans. He gave up
his might into captivity, his glorious ark into the hands of
the foe. God abandoned his people to the sword; he was
enraged against his heritage. [PS 78:55-62]
Do not hold past iniquities against us; may
your compassion come quickly, for we have been brought very
low. Help us, God our savior, for the glory of your
name. Deliver us, pardon our sins for your name's sake.
Why should the nations say, "Where is their
God?" Before our eyes make clear to the
nations that you avenge the blood of your servants. [PS 79:8-10]
Sing joyfully to God our strength; shout in
triumph to the God of Jacob! [PS 81:2]
"'Listen, my people, I give you warning! If
only you will obey me, Israel! There must be no foreign god among
you; you must not worship an alien god. I, the LORD, am your
God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt. Open
wide your mouth that I may fill it.' But my people did not listen
to my words; Israel did not obey me. So I gave them over to
hardness of heart; they followed their own designs. But even
now if my people would listen, if Israel would walk in my
paths, In a moment I would subdue their foes, against their
enemies unleash my hand. Those who hate the LORD would
tremble, their doom sealed forever. But Israel I would feed
with the finest wheat, satisfy them with honey from the
rock." [PS 81:9-17]
Arise, O God, judge the earth, for yours are all
the nations. [PS 82:8]
God, do not be silent; God, be not still
and unmoved! See how your enemies rage; your foes proudly
raise their heads. They conspire against your people, plot
against those you protect. [PS 83:2-4]
My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the
LORD. My heart and flesh cry out for the living God. [PS 84:3]
As the sparrow finds a home and the swallow a
nest to settle her young, My home is by your altars, LORD of
hosts, my king and my God! [PS 84:4]
Better one day in your courts than a thousand
elsewhere. Better the threshold of the house of my God than a home
in the tents of the wicked. [PS 84:11]
For a sun and shield is the LORD God, bestowing
all grace and glory. The LORD withholds no good thing from those
who walk without reproach. [PS 84:12]
Restore us once more, God our
savior; abandon your wrath against us. Will you be angry with
us forever, drag out your anger for all generations? Please
give us life again, that your people may rejoice in you. Show
us, LORD, your love; grant us your salvation. [PS 85:5-8]
I will listen for the word of God; surely
the LORD will proclaim peace To his people, to the faithful, to
those who trust in him. [PS 85:9]
You are my God; pity me, Lord; to you I
call all the day. Gladden the soul of your servant; to you,
Lord, I lift up my soul. Lord, you are kind and
forgiving, most loving to all who call on you. LORD, hear my
prayer; listen to my cry for help. In this time of trouble I
call, for you will answer me. [PS 86:3-7]
All the nations you have made shall come to bow before you, Lord,
and give honor to your name. For you are great and do wondrous deeds; and you alone are God. [PS
86:9-10]
Teach me, LORD, your way that I may walk in
your truth, single-hearted and revering your name. I will praise
you with all my heart, glorify your name forever, Lord my
God. Your love for me is great; you have rescued me from the
depths of Sheol. O God, the arrogant have risen against me; a
ruthless band has sought my life; to you they pay no heed. But
you, Lord, are a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger,
most loving and true. Turn to me, have pity on me; give your
strength to your servant; save this child of your handmaid.
Give me a sign of your favor: make my enemies see, to their
confusion, that you, LORD, help and comfort me. [PS 86:11-17]
LORD, God of hosts, who is like you? Mighty
LORD, your loyalty is always present. [PS 89:9]
Lord, you have been our refuge through all
generations. Before the mountains were born, the earth and
the world brought forth, from eternity to eternity you are
God. A thousand years in your eyes are merely a yesterday,
But humans you return to dust, saying, "Return, you
mortals!" Before a watch passes in the night, you have
brought them to their end; They disappear like sleep at
dawn; they are like grass that dies. It sprouts green in the
morning; by evening it is dry and withered. [PS 90:1-6]
Though a thousand fall at your side, ten
thousand at your right hand, near you it shall not come. You
need simply watch; the punishment of the wicked you will see.
You have the LORD for your refuge; you have made the Most
High your stronghold. No evil shall befall you, no affliction
come near your tent. For God commands the angels to guard you
in all your ways. With their hands they shall support
you, lest you strike your foot against a stone. [PS 91:7-12]
LORD, avenging God, avenging God, shine
forth! Rise up, judge of the earth; give the proud what they
deserve. How long, LORD, shall the wicked, how long shall the
wicked glory? How long will they mouth haughty speeches, go
on boasting, all these evildoers? They crush your people,
LORD, torment your very own. They kill the widow and
alien; the fatherless they murder. They say, "The LORD
does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice."
Understand, you stupid people! You fools, when will you be
wise? Does the one who shaped the ear not hear? The one who
formed the eye not see? Does the one who guides nations not
rebuke? The one who teaches humans not have knowledge? The
LORD does know human plans; they are only puffs of air. [PS
94:1-11]
The sea and dry land belong to God, who made
them, formed them by hand. [PS 95:5]
Enter, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For this is our God, whose people we are, God's well-tended flock.
[Taken from PS 95:6-7]
Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the
LORD, all the earth. Sing to the LORD, bless his
name; announce his salvation day after day. Tell God's glory
among the nations; among all peoples, God's marvelous deeds. [PS
96:1-3]
Give to the LORD, you families of
nations, give to the LORD glory and might; give to the LORD
the glory due his name! Bring gifts and enter his courts; bow
down to the LORD, splendid in holiness. Tremble before God, all
the earth; say among the nations: The LORD is king. The world
will surely stand fast, never to be moved. God rules the
peoples with fairness. [PS 96:7-10]
The LORD is king; let the earth
rejoice; let the many islands be glad. Cloud and darkness
surround the Lord; justice and right are the foundation of
his throne. Fire goes before him; everywhere it consumes the
foes. Lightning illumines the world; the earth sees and
trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before
the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim God's
justice; all peoples see his glory. [PS 97:1-6]
Sing a new song to the LORD, who has done
marvelous deeds, Whose right hand and holy arm have won the
victory. The LORD has made his victory known; has revealed
his triumph for the nations to see, Has remembered faithful
love toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the
earth have seen the victory of our God. [PS 98:1-3]
The LORD is king, the peoples tremble; God is enthroned on the cherubim, the earth quakes.
The LORD is great on Zion, exalted above all the peoples. Let them praise your great and awesome name: Holy is God! [PS
99:1-3]
O mighty king, lover of justice, you alone have established fairness;
you have created just rule in Jacob. Exalt the LORD, our God; bow down before his footstool; holy is God! [PS
99:4-5]
Moses and Aaron were among his
priests, Samuel among those who called on God's
name; they called on the LORD, who answered them. From the
pillar of cloud God spoke to them; they kept the decrees, the
law they received. O LORD, our God, you answered them; you
were a forgiving God, though you punished their offenses.
Exalt the LORD, our God; bow down before his holy
mountain; holy is the LORD, our God. [PS 99:6-9]
Shout joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
worship the LORD with cries of gladness; come before him with
joyful song. Know that the LORD is God, our maker to whom we
belong, whose people we are, God's well-tended flock. Enter
the temple gates with praise, its courts with
thanksgiving. Give thanks to God, bless his name; good indeed
is the LORD, Whose love endures forever, whose
faithfulness lasts through every age. [PS 100:1-5]
God has shattered my strength in
mid-course, has cut short my days. I plead, O my God, do
not take me in the midst of my days. Your years last through all
generations. Of old you laid the earth's foundations; the
heavens are the work of your hands. They perish, but you
remain; they all wear out like a garment; Like clothing
you change them and they are changed, but you are the same, your
years have no end. May the children of your servants live
on; may their descendants live in your presence. [PS
102:24-29]
Bless the LORD, my soul; all my being,
bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, my soul; do not forget
all the gifts of God, Who pardons all your sins, heals all
your ills, Delivers your life from the pit, surrounds you
with love and compassion, Fills your days with good
things; your youth is renewed like the eagle's. The LORD
does righteous deeds, brings justice to all the oppressed.
His ways were revealed to Moses, mighty deeds to the people
of Israel. Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger,
abounding in kindness. God does not always rebuke, nurses no
lasting anger, Has not dealt with us as our sins merit, nor
requited us as our deeds deserve. [PS 103:1-10]
As the heavens tower over the earth, so
God's love towers over the faithful. [PS 103:11]
The LORD'S throne is established in
heaven; God's royal power rules over all. Bless the LORD, all
you angels, mighty in strength and attentive, obedient
to every command. Bless the LORD, all you hosts, ministers
who do God's will. Bless the LORD, all creatures, everywhere in
God's domain. Bless the LORD, my soul! [PS 103:19-22]
Bless the LORD, my soul! LORD, my God, you are
great indeed! You are clothed with majesty and glory, robed in
light as with a cloak. You spread out the heavens like a tent; you
raised your palace upon the waters. You make the clouds your
chariot; you travel on the wings of the wind. You make the winds
your messengers; flaming fire, your ministers. [PS 104:1-4]
If God glares at the earth, it trembles; if God
touches the mountains, they smoke! [PS 104:32]
I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing
praise to my God while I live. May my theme be pleasing to God; I will rejoice
in the LORD. [PS 104:33-34]
The LORD is our God who rules the whole
earth. [PS 105:7]
Who can tell the mighty deeds of the LORD,
proclaim in full God's praise? [PS 106:2]
Many times did he rescue them, but they kept
rebelling and scheming and were brought low by their own guilt.
Still God had regard for their affliction when he heard their
wailing. For their sake he remembered his covenant and relented in
his abundant love, Winning for them compassion from all who held
them captive. [PS 106:43-46]
Save us, LORD, our God; gather us from among the
nations That we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in
praising you. Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from
everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, Amen!
Hallelujah! [PS 106:47-48]
Appear on high over the heavens, God; may your glory appear
above all the earth. Help with your right hand and answer us that your loved ones may escape. [PS 108:6-7]
Was it not you who rejected us, God? Do you no longer march with our armies?
Give us aid against the foe; worthless is human help. We will triumph with the help of God, who will trample down our foes. [PS 108:12-14]
O God, whom I praise, do not be silent, for
wicked and treacherous mouths attack me. They speak against me
with lying tongues; with hateful words they surround me, attacking
me without cause. In return for my love they slander me, even
though I prayed for them. They repay me evil for good, hatred for
my love. [Taken from PS 109:2-5]
But you, LORD, my God, deal kindly with me for
your name's sake; in your great mercy rescue me. For I am sorely
in need; my heart is pierced within me. [PS 109:21-22]
I have become a mockery to them; when they see
me, they shake their heads. Help me, LORD, my God; save me in your
kindness. Make them know this is your hand, that you, LORD, have
acted. Though they curse, may you bless; shame my foes, that your
servant may rejoice. Clothe my accusers with disgrace; make them
wear shame like a mantle. I will give fervent thanks to the LORD;
before all I will praise my God. For God stands at the right hand
of the poor to defend them against unjust accusers. [PS 109:25-31]
Hallelujah! Happy are those who fear the LORD,
who greatly delight in God's commands. [PS 112:1]
High above all nations is the LORD; above the
heavens God's glory. Who is like the LORD, our God enthroned on
high, looking down on heaven and earth? The LORD raises the needy
from the dust, lifts the poor from the ash heap, Seats them with
princes, the princes of the people, Gives the childless wife a
home, the joyful mother of children. Hallelujah! [PS
113:4-9]
Tremble, earth, before the Lord, before the God of Jacob, Who turned rock into pools of water, stone into flowing springs.
[PS 114:7-8]
Our God is in heaven; whatever God wills is
done. [PS 115:3]
Gracious is the LORD and just; yes, our God
is merciful. [PS 116:5]
The LORD protects the simple; I was helpless,
but God saved me. [PS 116:6]
Let those who fear the LORD say, God's love
endures forever. [PS 118:4]
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD.
We bless you from the LORD'S house. The LORD is God and has given us light.
Join in procession with leafy branches up to the horns of the altar.
[PS 118:26-27]
You are my God, I give you thanks; my God, I offer you praise. Give thanks to the LORD, who is good, whose love endures forever.
[PS 118:28-29]
Happy those whose way is blameless, who walk by the teaching of the LORD. Happy those who observe God's decrees, who seek the LORD with all their heart. They do no wrong; they walk in God's ways.
[PS 119:1-3]
Depart from me, you wicked, that I may observe
the commands of my God. [PS 119:115]
God will not allow your foot to slip; your
guardian does not sleep. Truly, the guardian of Israel never
slumbers nor sleeps. The LORD is your guardian; the LORD is
your shade at your right hand. By day the sun cannot harm
you, nor the moon by night. The LORD will guard you from all
evil, will always guard your life. The LORD will guard your
coming and going both now and forever. [PS 121:3-8]
Yes, like the eyes of a servant on the hand of
his master, Like the eyes of a maid on the hand of her mistress,
So our eyes are on the LORD our God, till we are shown favor. [PS
123:2]
It is vain for you to rise early and put off
your rest at night, To eat bread earned by hard toil - all this
God gives to his beloved in sleep. [PS 127:2]
Happy are all who fear the
LORD, who walk in the ways of God. [PS 128:1]
"Let us enter God's dwelling; let us worship at
God's footstool." [PS 132:7]
Praise the LORD; the LORD is good! Sing to God's
name; it is gracious! [PS 135:3]
Praise the LORD, who is so good; God's love
endures forever [Taken from PS 136:1]
How precious to me are your designs, O God; how vast the sum of them! Were I to count, they would outnumber the sands; to finish, I would need eternity.
[PS 139:17-18]
Probe me, God, know my heart; try me, know my
concerns. [PS 139:23]
I say to the LORD: You are my God; listen, LORD, to the words of my prayer. My revered LORD, my strong helper, my helmet on the day of battle.
LORD, do not grant the desires of the wicked; do not let their plots succeed. [Taken from PS
140:7-9]
My eyes are upon you, O GOD, my Lord; in you I take refuge; do
not strip me of life. Guard me from the trap they have set for me, from the snares of evildoers. [PS
141:8-9]
With full voice I cry to the LORD; with
full voice I beseech the LORD. Before God I pour out my
complaint, lay bare my distress. My spirit is faint within
me, but you know my path. Along the way I walk they
have hidden a trap for me. I look to my right hand, but no
friend is there. There is no escape for me; no one cares
for me. I cry out to you, LORD, I say, You are my
refuge, my portion in the land of the living. [PS 142:2-6]
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.
May your kind spirit guide me on ground that is level. [PS 143:10]
O God, a new song I will sing to you; on a
ten-stringed lyre I will play for you. [PS 144:9]
Happy the people so blessed; happy the people
whose God is the LORD. [PS 144:15]
I will extol you, my God and king; I will
bless your name forever. Every day I will bless you; I will
praise your name forever. Great is the LORD and worthy of high
praise; God's grandeur is beyond understanding. One
generation praises your deeds to the next and proclaims your
mighty works. They speak of the splendor of your majestic
glory, tell of your wonderful deeds. They speak of your
fearsome power and attest to your great deeds. They publish
the renown of your abounding goodness and joyfully sing of
your justice. The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to
anger and abounding in love. The LORD is good to
all, compassionate to every creature. [PS 145:1-9]
Praise the LORD, my soul; I shall praise the
LORD all my life, sing praise to my God while I live. [PS 146:2]
Happy those whose help is Jacob's
God, whose hope is in the LORD, their God, The maker of
heaven and earth, the seas and all that is in them, Who
keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food
to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free; the LORD gives
sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who are bowed
down; the LORD loves the righteous. The LORD protects the
stranger, sustains the orphan and the widow, but thwarts
the way of the wicked. The LORD shall reign forever, your
God, Zion, through all generations! Hallelujah! [PS 146:5-10]
Hallelujah! I How good to celebrate our God in
song; how sweet to give fitting praise. [PS 147:1]
Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; with
the lyre celebrate our God, Who covers the heavens with
clouds, provides rain for the earth, makes grass sprout
on the mountains, Who gives animals their food and ravens
what they cry for. God takes no delight in the strength of
horses, no pleasure in the runner's stride. Rather the LORD
takes pleasure in the devout, those who await his faithful
care. [PS 147:7-11]
Glorify the LORD, Jerusalem; Zion, offer
praise to your God, Who has strengthened the bars of your
gates, blessed your children within you, Brought peace to
your borders, and filled you with finest wheat. [PS 147:12-14]
The LORD also proclaims his word to Jacob, decrees and laws to Israel.
God has not done this for other nations; of such laws they know nothing. Hallelujah! [PS
147:19-20]
Hallelujah! Praise God in his holy
sanctuary; give praise in the mighty dome of heaven. Give
praise for his mighty deeds, praise him for his great
majesty. Give praise with blasts upon the horn, praise him
with harp and lyre. Give praise with tambourines and dance, praise
him with flutes and strings. Give praise with crashing cymbals,
praise him with sounding cymbals. Let everything that has
breath give praise to the LORD! Hallelujah! [PS 150:1-6]
My son, if you receive my words and
treasure my commands, Turning your ear to wisdom, inclining
your heart to understanding; Yes, if you call to
intelligence, and to understanding raise your voice; If you
seek her like silver, and like hidden treasures search her
out: Then will you understand the fear of the LORD; the
knowledge of God you will find; For the LORD gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
He has counsel in store for the upright, he is the shield of those who walk honestly, Guarding the paths of justice, protecting the way of his pious ones.
[PROV 2:1-8]
My son, forget not my teaching, keep in
mind my commands; For many days, and years of life, and
peace, will they bring you. Let not kindness and fidelity leave
you; bind them around your neck; Then will you win favor and
good esteem before God and man. Trust in the LORD with all
your heart, on your own intelligence rely not; In all your
ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.
[PROV 3:1-6]
God has glory in what he conceals, kings have
glory in what they fathom. [PROV 25:2]
Every word of God is tested; he is a shield to
those who take refuge in him. [PROV 30:5]
Two things I ask of you, deny them not to
me before I die: Put falsehood and lying far from me, give me
neither poverty nor riches; (provide me only with the food I
need;) Lest, being full, I deny you, saying, "Who is the
LORD?" Or, being in want, I steal, and profane the
name of my God. [PROV 30:7-9]
I, Qoheleth, was king over Israel in Jerusalem, and I applied my mind to search and investigate in wisdom all things that are done under the sun. A thankless task God has appointed for men to be busied about. [ECCL
1:12-13]
There is nothing better for man than to eat and drink and provide himself with good things by his labors. Even this, I realized, is from the hand of God.
For who can eat or drink apart from him? For to whatever man he sees fit he gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering possessions to be given to whatever man God sees fit. This also is vanity and a chase after wind.
[ECCL 2:24-26]
What advantage has the worker from his toil? I
have considered the task which God has appointed for men to be
busied about. He has made everything appropriate to its time, and
has put the timeless into their hearts, without men's ever
discovering, from beginning to end, the work which God has done. I
recognized that there is nothing better than to be glad and to do
well during life. For every man, moreover, to eat and drink and
enjoy the fruit of all his labor is a gift of God.
[ECCL 3:9-13]
I recognized that whatever God does will endure
forever; there is no adding to it, or taking from it. Thus has God
done that he may be revered. What now is has already been; what is to be,
already is; and God restores what would otherwise be displaced.
[ECCL 3:14-15]
And still under the sun in the judgment place I saw wickedness, and in the seat of justice, iniquity.
And I said to myself, both the just and the wicked God will judge, since there is a time for every affair and on every work a judgment.
[ECCL 3:16-17]
Be not hasty in your utterance and let not your
heart be quick to make a promise in God's presence. God is in
heaven and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few. For
nightmares come with many cares, and a fool's utterance with
many words. When you make a vow to God, delay not its fulfillment.
For God has no pleasure in fools; fulfill what you have vowed. You
had better not make a vow than make it and not fulfill it. Let not
your utterances make you guilty, and say not before his
representative, "It was a mistake," lest God be angered
by such words and destroy the works of your hands. Rather, fear
God! [ECCL 5:1-6]
Consider the work of God. Who can make straight
what he has made crooked? On a good day enjoy good things, and on an evil
day consider: Both the one and the other God has made, so that man
cannot find fault with him in anything. [ECCL 7:13-14]
Meanwhile I saw wicked men approach and enter;
and as they left the sacred place, they were praised in the city
for what they had done. This also is vanity. Because the sentence
against evildoers is not promptly executed, therefore the hearts
of men are filled with the desire to commit evil - because the
sinner does evil a hundred times and survives. Though indeed I
know that it shall be well with those who fear God, for their
reverence toward him; and that it shall not be well with the
wicked man, and he shall not prolong his shadowy days, for his
lack of reverence toward God. This is a vanity which occurs on
earth: there are just men treated as though they had done evil and
wicked men treated as though they had done justly. This, too, I
say is vanity. [ECCL 8:10-14]
When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to observe what is done on earth,
I recognized that man is unable to find out all God's work that is done under the sun, even though neither by day nor by night do his eyes find rest in sleep. However much man toils in searching, he does not find it out; and even if the wise man says that he knows, he is unable to find it out.
[ECCL 8:16-17]
Just as you know not how the breath of
life fashions the human frame in the mother's womb, So
you know not the work of God which he is accomplishing in the
universe. In the morning sow your seed, and at evening let not
your hand be idle: For you know not which of the two will be
successful, or whether both alike will turn out well. [ECCL
11:5-6]
Rejoice, O young man, while you are young and
let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. Follow the ways
of your heart, the vision of your eyes; Yet understand that as
regards all this God will bring you to judgment. [ECCL 11:9]
And the dust returns to the earth as it once
was, and the life breath returns to God who gave it. [ECCL 12:7]
The last word, when all is heard: Fear God and
keep his commandments, for this is man's all; because God will bring to judgment every work,
with all its hidden qualities, whether good or bad. [ECCL 12:13-14]
For perverse counsels separate a man from God,
and his power, put to the proof, rebukes the foolhardy [Taken from
WISDOM
1:3]
For wisdom is a kindly spirit, yet she
acquits not the blasphemer of his guilty lips; Because God is
the witness of his inmost self and the sure observer of his
heart and the listener to his tongue. For the spirit of the
LORD fills the world, is all-embracing, and knows what man
says. Therefore no one who utters wicked things can go unnoticed,
1 nor will chastising condemnation pass him by. [WISDOM 1:6-8]
Because God did not make death, nor does he
rejoice in the destruction of the living. For he fashioned all
things that they might have being; and the creatures of the
world are wholesome, And there is not a destructive drug
among them nor any domain of the nether world on earth, For
justice is undying. [WISDOM 1:13-15]
"Let us beset the just one, because he is
obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our
doings, Reproaches us for transgressions of the law and
charges us with violations of our training. He professes to have
knowledge of God and styles himself a child of the LORD. To
us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a
hardship for us, Because his life is not like other
men's, and different are his ways. He judges us
debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things
impure. He calls blest the destiny of the just and
boasts that God is his Father. Let us see whether his words be
true; let us find out what will happen to him. For if the
just one be the son of God, he will defend him and deliver
him from the hand of his foes. With revilement and torture let us
put him to the test that we may have proof of his
gentleness and try his patience. Let us condemn him to a
shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take
care of him." These were their thoughts, but they
erred; for their wickedness blinded them, And they knew not
the hidden counsels of God; neither did they count on a
recompense of holiness nor discern the innocent souls'
reward. For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of
his own nature he made him. But by the envy of the devil, death
entered the world, and they who are in his possession
experience it. [WISDOM 2:12-24]
But the souls of the just are in the hand of
God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the
view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was
thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter
destruction. But they are in peace. For if before men,
indeed, they be punished, yet is their hope full of
immortality; Chastised a little, they shall be greatly
blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of
himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as
sacrificial offerings he took them to himself. In the time of
their visitation they shall shine, and shall dart about as
sparks through stubble; They shall judge nations and rule over
peoples, and the LORD shall be their King forever. Those who
trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall
abide with him in love: Because grace and mercy are with his
holy ones, and his care is with the elect. But the wicked
shall receive a punishment to match
their thoughts, since they neglected justice and forsook
the LORD. For he who despises wisdom and instruction is
doomed. Vain is their hope, fruitless are their
labors, and worthless are their works. [WISDOM 3:1-11]
Better is childlessness with virtue; for
immortal is its memory: because both by God is it acknowledged,
and by men. [WISDOM 4:1]
He who pleased God was loved; he who lived among
sinners was transported [Taken from WISDOM 4:10]
Then shall the just one with great assurance
confront his oppressors who set at nought his labors. Seeing
this, they shall be shaken with dreadful fear, and amazed at
the unlooked-for salvation. They shall say among themselves,
rueful and groaning through anguish of
spirit: "This is he whom once we held as a
laughingstock and as a type for mockery, fools that we
were! His life we accounted madness, and his death
dishonored. See how he is accounted among the sons of
God; how his lot is with the saints!" [WISDOM 5:1-5]
Because, though you were ministers of his
kingdom, you judged not rightly, and did not keep the
law, nor walk according to the will of God, Terribly and
swiftly shall he come against you, because judgment is stern
for the exalted- For the lowly may be pardoned out of
mercy but the mighty shall be mightily put to the test. For
the Lord of all shows no partiality, nor does he fear
greatness, Because he himself made the great as well as the
small, and he provides for all alike; but for those in power
a rigorous scrutiny impends. [WISDOM 6:4-8]
For the first step toward discipline is a very
earnest desire for her; then, care for discipline is love of
her; love means the keeping of her laws; To observe her laws
is the basis for incorruptibility; and incorruptibility makes one
close to God; thus the desire for Wisdom leads up to a kingdom. [WISDOM
6:17-20]
Simply I learned about [Wisdom], and ungrudgingly do I
share - her riches I do not hide away; For to men she is an unfailing
treasure; those who gain this treasure win the friendship of God, to whom the gifts they have from discipline commend them. [Taken from WISDOM
7:13-14]
For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion, and
she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of
her purity. For she is an aura of the might of God and a
pure effusion of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nought that
is sullied enters into her. For she is the refulgence of eternal
light, the spotless mirror of the power of God, the image of
his goodness. And she, who is one, can do all things, and renews
everything while herself perduring; And passing into holy
souls from age to age, she produces friends of God and
prophets. For there is nought God loves, be it not one who dwells
with Wisdom. For she is fairer than the sun and
surpasses every constellation of the stars. Compared to
light, she takes precedence; for that, indeed, night
supplants, but wickedness prevails not over Wisdom. [WISDOM
7:24-30]
God of my fathers, LORD of mercy. you who
have made all things by your word And in your wisdom have
established man to rule the creatures produced by you, To
govern the world in holiness and justice, and to render
judgment in integrity of heart: Give me Wisdom, the attendant at
your throne, and reject me not from among your children; For
I am your servant, the son of your handmaid, a man weak and
short-lived and lacking in comprehension of judgment and of
laws. Indeed, though one be perfect among the sons of men, if
Wisdom, who comes from you, be not with him, he shall be held
in no esteem. [WISDOM 9:1-6]
For what man knows God's counsel, or who can
conceive what our LORD intends? [WISDOM 9:13]
But Wisdom delivered from tribulations those who
served her. She, when the just man fled from his brother's
anger, guided him in direct ways, Showed him the kingdom
of God and gave him knowledge of holy things; She
prospered him in his labors and made abundant the fruit of
his works, Stood by him against the greed of his defrauders, and
enriched him; She preserved him from foes, and secured him
against ambush, And she gave him the prize for his stern
struggle that he might know that devotion to God is mightier
than all else. [WISDOM 10:9-12]
Equally odious to God are the evildoer and his evil deed; and the thing made shall be punished with its contriver. [WISDOM
14:9-10]
But you, our God, are good and true, slow to
anger, and governing all with mercy. [WISDOM 15:1]
Trust God and he will help you; make straight
your ways and hope in him. [SIRACH 2:6]
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are,
and you will find favor with God. For great is the power of God; by the humble he
is glorified. [SIRACH 3:18-19]
Even to the death fight for truth, and the LORD
your God will battle for you. [SIRACH 4:28]
With all your soul, fear God, revere his priests. With all your strength,
love your Creator, forsake not his ministers. [SIRACH 7:29-30]
As best you can, take your neighbors' measure, and associate with the wise. With the learned be intimate; let all your conversation be about the law of the LORD. Have just men for your table companions;
in the fear of God be your glory. [SIRACH 9:14-16]
Sovereignty over the earth is in the hand of
God, who raises up on it the man of the hour; Sovereignty over every man is in the hand of
God, who imparts his majesty to the ruler. [SIRACH 10:4-5]
The beginning of pride is man's
stubbornness in withdrawing his heart from his Maker; For
pride is the reservoir of sin, a source which runs over with
vice; Because of it God sends unheard-of afflictions and
brings men to utter ruin. The thrones of the arrogant God
overturns and establishes the lowly in their stead. The roots
of the proud God plucks up, to plant the humble in their
place: He breaks down their stem to the level of the
ground, then digs their roots from the earth. The traces of
the proud God sweeps away and effaces the memory of them from
the earth. [SIRACH 10:12-17]
Whose offspring can be in honor? Those of men.
Which offspring are in honor? Those who fear God. Whose offspring
can be in disgrace? Those of men. Which offspring are in disgrace?
Those who transgress the commandments. [SIRACH 10:19]
Among brethren their leader is in honor; he who
fears God is in honor among his people. [SIRACH 10:20]
The prince, the ruler, the judge are in honor;
but none is greater than he who fears God. [SIRACH 10:23]
God's blessing is the lot of the just man, and
in due time his hopes bear fruit. [SIRACH 11:22]
Unseemly is praise on a sinner's lips, for it is
not accorded to him by God. [SIRACH 15:9]
Say not: "It was God's doing that I fell
away"; for what he hates he does not do. Say not:
"It was he who set me astray"; for he has no need
of wicked man. Abominable wickedness the LORD hates, he does
not let it befall those who fear him. When God, in the beginning,
created man, he made him subject to his own free choice. If
you choose you can keep the commandments; it is loyalty to do
his will. There are set before you fire and water; to
whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand. Before man are life
and death, whichever he chooses shall be given him. Immense is the
wisdom of the LORD; he is mighty in power, and all-seeing.
The eyes of God see all he has made; he understands man's
every deed. No man does he command to sin, to none does he
give strength for lies. [SIRACH 15:11-20]
Great as his mercy is his punishment; he
judges men, each according to his deeds. A criminal does not
escape with his plunder; a just man's hope God does not leave
unfulfilled. Whoever does good has his reward, which each
receives according to his deeds. Say not: "I am hidden from
God; in heaven who remembers me? Among so many people I
cannot be known; what am I in the world of spirits? Behold,
the heavens, the heaven of heavens, the earth and the abyss
tremble at his visitation; The roots of the mountains, the earth's
foundations, at his mere glance, quiver and quake. Of me,
therefore, he will take no thought; with my ways who will
concern himself? If I sin, no eye will see me; if all in
secret I am disloyal, who is to know? Who tells him of just
deeds and what could I expect for doing my duty?" Such
are the thoughts of senseless men, which only the foolish
knave will think. [SIRACH 16:12-21]
When at the first God created his
works and, as he made them, assigned their tasks, He ordered
for all time what they were to do and their domains from
generation to generation. They were not to hunger, nor grow
weary, nor ever cease from their tasks. Not one should ever
crowd its neighbor, nor should they ever disobey his word.
Then the LORD looked upon the earth, and filled it with his
blessings. Its surface he covered with all manner of
life which must return into it again. [SIRACH 16:24-28]
A man's goodness God cherishes like a signet
ring, a man's virtue, like the apple of his eye. [SIRACH 17:17]
God watches over the hosts of highest heaven,
while all men are dust and ashes. [SIRACH 17:27]
There are those with little understanding who
fear God, and those of great intelligence who violate the law. [SIRACH
19:20]
LORD, Father and Master of my life, permit
me not to fall by them! Who will apply the lash to my
thoughts, to my mind the rod of discipline, That my
failings may not be spared, nor the sins of my heart
overlooked; Lest my failings increase, and my sins be
multiplied; Lest I succumb to my foes, and my enemy rejoice
over me? LORD, Father and God of my life, abandon me not into
their control! A brazen look allow me not; ward off passion
from my heart, Let not the lustful cravings of the flesh master
me, surrender me not to shameless desires. [SIRACH 23:1-6]
He who would find God must accept discipline; he
who seeks him obtains his request. [SIRACH 32:14]
Tainted his gifts who offers in sacrifice ill-gotten goods! Mock presents from the lawless win not God's favor. The Most High approves not the gifts of the godless, nor for their many sacrifices does he forgive their sins.
Like the man who slays a son in his father's presence is he who offers sacrifice from the possessions of the poor.
[SIRACH 34:18-20]
In generous spirit pay homage to the LORD, be
not sparing of freewill gifts. With each contribution show a
cheerful countenance, and pay your tithes in a spirit of joy. Give
to the Most High as he has given to you, generously, according to
your means. For the LORD is one who always repays, and he will
give back to you sevenfold. But offer no bribes, these he does not
accept! Trust not in sacrifice of the fruits of extortion, For he
is a God of justice, who knows no favorites. Though not unduly
partial toward the weak, yet he hears the cry of the oppressed. He
is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she
pours out her complaint; Do not the tears that stream down her
cheek cry out against him that causes them to fall? [SIRACH 35:7-15]
He who serves God willingly is heard; his
petition reaches the heavens. The prayer of the lowly pierces the
clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, Nor will it
withdraw till the Most High responds, judges justly and affirms
the right. God indeed will not delay, and like a warrior, will not
be still Till he breaks the backs of the merciless and wreaks
vengeance upon the proud; Till he destroys the haughty root and
branch, and smashes the scepter of the wicked; Till he requites
mankind according to its deeds, and repays men according to their
thoughts; Till he defends the cause of his people, and gladdens
them by his mercy. Welcome is his mercy in time of distress as
rain clouds in time of drought. [SIRACH 35:16-24]
Come to our aid, O God of the universe, and put
all the nations in dread of you! Raise your hand against the
heathen, that they may realize your power. As you have used us to
show them your holiness, so now use them to show us your glory.
Thus they will know, as we know, that there is no God but you.
Give new signs and work new wonders; show forth the splendor of
your right hand and arm; Rouse your anger, pour out wrath, humble
the enemy, scatter the foe. [SIRACH 36:1-6]
Show mercy to the people called by your name;
Israel, whom you named your first-born. Take pity on your holy
city, Jerusalem, your dwelling place. Fill Zion with your majesty,
your temple with your glory. Give evidence of your deeds of old;
fulfill the prophecies spoken in your name, Reward those who have
hoped in you, and let your prophets be proved true. Hear the
prayer of your servants, for you are ever gracious to your people;
Thus it will be known to the very ends of the earth that you are
the eternal God. [SIRACH 36:11-17]
Seek no advice from one who regards you with
hostility; from those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden.
Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about war,
to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a miser
about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man about
work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle slave
about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they give.
Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure keeps
the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will feel
for you if you fall. Then, too, heed your own heart's counsel; for
what have you that you can depend on more? A man's conscience can
tell him his situation better than seven watchmen in a lofty
tower. Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the
path of truth. [SIRACH 37:10-15]
Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential
to you, and God it was who established his profession. [SIRACH
38:1]
God makes the earth yield healing herbs which
the prudent man should not neglect [Taken from SIRACH 38:4]
My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to
God, who will heal you [Taken from SIRACH 38:9]
All these men are skilled with their hands, each
one an expert at his own task; Without them no city could be lived
in, and wherever they stay, they need not hunger. They do not
occupy the judge's bench, nor are they prominent in the assembly;
They set forth no decisions or judgments, nor are they found among
the rulers; Yet they maintain God's ancient handiwork, and their
concern is for exercise of their skill. [SIRACH 38:31-34]
The works of God are all of them good; in its
own time every need is supplied. [SIRACH 39:16]
The works of God are all of them good; every
need when it comes he fills. No cause then to say: "This is
not as good as that"; for each shows its worth at the proper
time. So now with full joy of heart proclaim and bless the name of
the Holy One. [SIRACH 39:33-35]
Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better
than either, fear of God. Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting;
he who has it need seek no other support: The fear of God is a
paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious. [SIRACH
40:26-27]
Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it
embraces those before you, and those after. Thus God has ordained
for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most
High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten,
in the nether world he has no claim on life. [SIRACH 41:3-4]
Now will I recall God's works; what I have seen,
I will describe. At God's word were his works brought into being;
they do his will as he has ordained for them. As the rising sun is
clear to all, so the glory of the LORD fills all his works; Yet
even God's holy ones must fail in recounting the wonders of the
LORD, Though God has given these, his hosts, the strength to stand
firm before his glory. He plumbs the depths and penetrates the
heart; their innermost being he understands. The Most High
possesses all knowledge, and sees from of old the things that are
to come: He makes known the past and the future, and reveals the
deepest secrets. No understanding does he lack; no single thing
escapes him. Perennial is his almighty wisdom; he is from all
eternity one and the same, With nothing added, nothing taken away;
no need of a counselor for him! How beautiful are all his works!
even to the spark and the fleeting vision! The universe lives and
abides forever; to meet each need, each creature is preserved. All
of them differ, one from another, yet none of them has he made in
vain, For each in turn, as it comes, is good; can one ever see
enough of their splendor? [SIRACH 42:15-25]
The beauty, the glory, of the heavens are the
stars that adorn with their sparkling the heights of God, At whose
command they keep their place and never relax in their vigils. A
weapon against the flood waters stored on high, lighting up the
firmament by its brilliance, Behold the rainbow! Then bless its
Maker, for majestic indeed is its splendor; It spans the heavens
with its glory, this bow bent by the mighty hand of God. [SIRACH
43:9-12]
Dear to God and men, Moses, whose memory is held
in benediction. God's honor devolved upon him, and the Lord
strengthened him with fearful powers; God wrought swift miracles
at his words and sustained him in the king's presence. He gave him
the commandments for his people, and revealed to him his glory.
For his trustworthiness and meekness God selected him from all
mankind; He permitted him to hear his voice, and led him into the
cloud, Where, face to face, he gave him the commandments, the law
of life and understanding, That he might teach his precepts to
Jacob, his judgments and decrees to Israel. [Taken from SIRACH 45:1-5]
Valiant leader was Joshua, son of Nun, assistant
to Moses in the prophetic office, Formed to be, as his name
implies, the great savior of God's chosen ones, To punish the
enemy and to win the inheritance for Israel. What glory was his
when he raised his arm, to brandish his javelin against the city!
And who could withstand him when he fought the battles of the
LORD? Did he not by his power stop the sun, so that one day became
two? He called upon the Most High God when his enemies beset him
on all sides, And God Most High gave answer to him in hailstones
of tremendous power, Which he rained down upon the hostile army
till on the slope he destroyed the foe; That all the doomed
nations might know that the LORD was watching over his people's
battles. And because he was a devoted follower of God and in
Moses' lifetime showed himself loyal, He and Caleb, son of
Jephunneh, when they opposed the rebel assembly, Averted God's
anger from the people and suppressed the wicked complaint -
Because of this, they were the only two spared from the six
hundred thousand infantry, To lead the people into their
inheritance, the land flowing with milk and honey. And the
strength he gave to Caleb remained with him even in his old age
Till he won his way onto the summits of the land; his family too
received an inheritance, That all the people of Jacob might know
how good it is to be a devoted follower of the LORD. [SIRACH 46:1-10]
And now, bless the God of all, who has done
wondrous things on earth; Who fosters men's growth from their
mother's womb, and fashions them according to his will! May he
grant you joy of heart and may peace abide among you; May his
goodness toward us endure in Israel as long as the heavens are
above. [SIRACH 50:22-24]
I give you thanks, O God of my father; I praise
you, O God my savior! I will make known your name, refuge of my
life; you have been my helper against my adversaries. You have
saved me from death, and kept back my body from the pit, From the
clutches of the nether world you have snatched my feet; you have
delivered me, in your great mercy From the scourge of a slanderous
tongue, and from lips that went over to falsehood; From the snare
of those who watched for my downfall, and from the power of those
who sought my life; From many a danger you have saved me, from
flames that hemmed me in on every side; From the midst of
unremitting fire, From the deep belly of the nether world; From
deceiving lips and painters of lies, from the arrows of dishonest
tongues. I was at the point of death, my soul was nearing the
depths of the nether world; I turned every way, but there was no
one to help me, I looked for one to sustain me, but could find no
one. But then I remembered the mercies of the LORD, his kindness
through ages past; For he saves those who take refuge in him, and
rescues them from every evil. So I raised my voice from the very
earth, from the gates of the nether world, my cry. I called out: O
Lord, you are my father, you are my champion and my savior; Do not
abandon me in time of trouble, in the midst of storms and dangers.
I will ever praise your name and be constant in my prayers to you.
Thereupon the LORD heard my voice, he listened to my appeal; He
saved me from evil of every kind and preserved me in time of
trouble. For this reason I thank him and I praise him; I bless the
name of the LORD. [SIRACH 51:1-12]
Let your spirits rejoice in the mercy of God,
and be not ashamed to give him praise. [SIRACH 51:29]
Work at your tasks in due season, and in his own
time God will give you your reward. [SIRACH 51:30]
But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted by his
judgment, and God the Holy shall be shown holy by his justice.
[ISA 5:16]
Then he said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary men, must you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.
[ISA 7:13-14]
Form a plan, and it shall be thwarted; make a
resolve, and it shall not be carried out, for "With us is
God!" [ISA 8:10]
For a child is born to us, a son is given us;
upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor,
God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast
and forever peaceful, From David's throne, and over his kingdom,
which he confirms and sustains By judgment and justice, both now
and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this! [ISA 9:5-6]
A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to
the mighty God. [ISA 10:21]
God indeed is my savior; I am confident and
unafraid. My strength and my courage is the LORD, and he has been
my savior. [ISA 12:2]
And Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the glory
and pride of the Chaldeans, Shall be overthrown by God like Sodom
and like Gomorrah. [ISA 13:19]
O LORD, you are my God, I will extol you and
praise your name; For you have fulfilled your wonderful plans of
old, faithful and true. [ISA 25:1]
On this mountain the LORD of hosts will
provide for all peoples A feast of rich food and choice
wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. On this
mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, The
web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death
forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all
faces; The reproach of his people he will remove from the
whole earth; for the LORD has spoken. On that day it will be
said: "Behold our God, to whom we looked to save
us! This is the LORD for whom we looked; let us rejoice and
be glad that he has saved us!" [ISA 25:6-9]
Yet the LORD is waiting to show you favor, and
he rises to pity you; For the LORD is a God of justice: blessed
are all who wait for him! [ISA 30:18]
The desert and the parched land will exult; the
steppe will rejoice and bloom. They will bloom with abundant
flowers, and rejoice with joyful song. The glory of Lebanon will
be given to them, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; They will see
the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. Strengthen the
hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, Say to
those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is
your God, he comes with vindication; With divine recompense he
comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the
ears of the deaf be cleared; Then will the lame leap like a stag,
then the tongue of the dumb will sing. Streams will burst forth in
the desert, and rivers in the steppe. [ISA 35:1-6]
Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the
messengers and read it; then he went up to the temple of the LORD,
and spreading it out before him, he prayed to the LORD: "O
LORD of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned upon the cherubim! You
alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made
the heavens and the earth. Incline your ear, O LORD, and listen!
Open your eyes, O LORD and see! Hear all the words of the letter
that Sennacherib sent to taunt the living God. Truly, O LORD, the
kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands,
and cast their gods into the fire; they destroyed them because
they were not gods but the work of human hands, wood and stone.
Therefore, O LORD, our God, save us from his hand, that all the
kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O LORD, alone are
God." [ISA 37:14-20]
"Though the grass withers and the flower wilts,
the word of our God stands forever." [ISA 40:8]
Go up onto a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad
tidings; Cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of
good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah:
Here is your God! Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by
his strong arm; Here is his reward with him, his recompense before
him. Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers
the lambs, Carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with
care. [ISA 40:9-11]
To whom can you liken God? With what equal can
you confront him? [ISA 40:18]
Why, O Jacob, do you say, and declare, O Israel,
"My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded
by my God"? Do you not know or have you not heard? The LORD
is the eternal God, creator of the ends of the earth. He does not
faint nor grow weary, and his knowledge is beyond scrutiny. He
gives strength to the fainting; for the weak he makes vigor
abound. Though young men faint and grow weary, and youths stagger
and fall, They that hope in the LORD will renew their strength,
they will soar as with eagles' wings; They will run and not grow
weary, walk and not grow faint. [ISA 40:27-31]
Fear not, I am with you; be not dismayed; I am
your God. I will strengthen you, and help you, and uphold you with
my right hand of justice. [ISA 41:10]
For I am the LORD, your God, who grasp your
right hand; It is I who say to you, "Fear not, I will help
you." [ISA 41:13]
For thus says the LORD, The creator of the
heavens, who is God, The designer and maker of the earth who
established it, Not creating it to be a waste, but designing it to
be lived in: I am the LORD, and there is no other. I have not
spoken from hiding nor from some dark place of the earth, And I
have not said to the descendants of Jacob, "Look for me in an
empty waste." I, the LORD, promise justice, I foretell what
is right. Come and assemble, gather together, you fugitives from
among the gentiles! They are without knowledge who bear wooden
idols and pray to gods that cannot save. Come here and declare in
counsel together: Who announced this from the beginning and
foretold it from of old? Was it not I, the LORD, besides whom
there is no other God? There is no just and saving God but me.
Turn to me and be safe, all you ends of the earth, for I am God;
there is no other! By myself I swear, uttering my just decree and
my unalterable word: To me every knee shall bend; by me every
tongue shall swear, Saying, "Only in the LORD are just deeds
and power. Before him in shame shall come all who vent their anger
against him. In the LORD shall be the vindication and the glory of
all the descendants of Israel." [ISA
45:18-25]
I am God, there is no other; I am God, there is
none like me. [ISA 46:9]
The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not
disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not
be put to shame. [ISA 50:7]
See, the Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me
wrong? Lo, they will all wear out like cloth, the moth will eat
them up. [ISA 50:9]
Lo, the hand of the LORD is not too short to
save, nor his ear too dull to hear. Rather, it is your crimes that
separate you from your God, It is your sins that make him hide his
face so that he will not hear you. For your hands are stained with
blood, your fingers with guilt; Your lips speak falsehood, and
your tongue utters deceit. [ISA 59:1-3]
No longer shall the sun be your light by day,
Nor the brightness of the moon shine upon you at night; The LORD
shall be your light forever, your God shall be your glory. No
longer shall your sun go down, or your moon withdraw, For the LORD
will be your light forever, and the days of your mourning shall be
at an end. Your people shall all be just, they shall always
possess the land, They, the bud of my planting, my handiwork to
show my glory. The smallest shall become a thousand, the youngest,
a mighty nation; I, the LORD, will swiftly accomplish these things
when their time comes. [ISA 60:19-22]
For Zion's sake I will not be silent, for
Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, Until her vindication shines
forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch. Nations
shall behold your vindication, and all kings your glory; You shall
be called by a new name pronounced by the mouth of the LORD. You
shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD, a royal diadem
held by your God. No more shall men call you "Forsaken,"
or your land "Desolate," But you shall be called
"My Delight," and your land "Espoused." For
the LORD delights in you, and makes your land his spouse. As a
young man marries a virgin, your Builder shall marry you; And as a
bridegroom rejoices in his bride so shall your God rejoice in you.
