On the first day you shall hold a sacred assembly, and likewise
on the seventh. On these days you shall not do any sort of work,
except to prepare the food that everyone needs. [EX 12:16]
"You shall not deny one of your needy fellow men his
rights in his lawsuit." [EX 23:6]
They received from Moses all the contributions which the Israelites had brought for establishing the service of the sanctuary. Still, morning after morning the people continued to bring their voluntary offerings to Moses. Thereupon the experts who were executing the various kinds of work for the sanctuary, all left the work they were doing, and told Moses, "The people are bringing much more than is needed to carry out the work which the LORD has commanded us to do." Moses, therefore, ordered a proclamation to be made throughout the camp: "Let neither man nor woman make any more contributions for the sanctuary." So the people stopped bringing their offerings; there was already enough at hand, in fact, more than enough, to complete the work to be done. [EX
36:3-7]
Nay, more! since the LORD, your God, will bless you abundantly
in the land he will give you to occupy as your heritage, there
should be no one of you in need. [DEUT 15:4]
If one of your kinsmen in any community is in need in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor close your hand to him in his need. Instead, you shall open your hand to him and freely lend him enough to meet his need. Be on your guard lest, entertaining the mean thought that the seventh year, the year of relaxation, is near, you grudge help to your needy kinsman and give him nothing; else he will cry to the LORD against you and you will be held guilty. When you give to him, give freely and not with ill will; for the LORD, your God, will bless you for this in all your works and undertakings. The needy will never be lacking in the land; that is why I command you to open your hand to your poor and needy kinsman in your country. [DEUT
15:7-11]
"You shall not defraud a poor and needy hired servant,
whether he be one of your own countrymen or one of the aliens who
live in your communities." [DEUT 24:14]
When he noticed the traveler in the public square of the city, the old man asked where he was going, and whence he had come. He said to him, "We are traveling from Bethlehem of Judah far up into the mountain region of Ephraim, where I belong. I have been to Bethlehem of Judah and am now going back home; but no one has offered us the shelter of his house. We have straw and fodder for our asses, and bread and wine for the woman and myself and for our servant; there is nothing else we need." "You are welcome," the old man said to him, "but let me provide for all your needs, and do not spend the night in the public square." So he led them to his house and provided fodder for the asses. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.
[JUDG 19:17-21]
The LORD makes poor and makes rich, he humbles, he also exalts. He raises the needy from the dust; from the ash heap he lifts up the poor,
To seat them with nobles and make a glorious throne their heritage.
He gives to the vower his vow, and blesses the sleep of the just.
"For the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, and he has set the world upon them." [1SAM
2:7-8]
"May the full responsibility for the death of Abner, son of
Ner,
be laid to Joab and to all his family. May the men of Joab's
family never be without one suffering from a discharge, or a
leper, or one unmanly, one falling by the sword, or one in need of
bread!" [2SAM 3:29]
You and your brethren may do whatever seems best to you with the remainder of the silver and gold, conformably to the will of your God. The utensils consigned to you for the service of the house of your God you are to deposit before the God of Jerusalem. Whatever else you may be required to supply for the needs of the house of your God, you may draw from the royal treasury. I, Artaxerxes the king, issue this decree to all the treasurers of West-of-Euphrates: Whatever Ezra the priest, scribe of the law of the God of heaven, requests of you, dispense to him accurately, within these limits: silver, one hundred talents; wheat, one hundred kors; wine, one hundred baths; oil, one hundred baths; salt, without limit. Let everything that is ordered by the God of heaven be carried out exactly for the house of the God of heaven, that wrath may not come upon the realm of the king and his sons. [EZRA
7:18-23]
Thus all Israel, in the days of Zerubbabel (and in the days of
Nehemiah), gave the singers and the gatekeepers their portions,
according to their daily needs. They made their consecrated
offering to the Levites, and the Levites made theirs to the sons
of Aaron. [NEH 12:47]
Because of this wholehearted service of God, the Most High granted me favor and status with Shalmaneser, so that I became purchasing agent for all his needs.
[TOBIT 1:12-13]
As Simon was inspecting the cities of the country and providing
for their needs, he and his sons Mattathias and Judas went down to
Jericho in the year one hundred and seventy-seven, in the eleventh
month (that is, the month Shebat). [1MACC 16:14]
As the architect of a new house must give his attention to the
whole structure, while the man who undertakes the decoration and
the frescoes has only to concern himself with what is needed for
ornamentation, so I think it is with us. [2MACC 2:29]
"Lord of all, though you are in need of nothing, you have
approved of a temple for your dwelling place among us." [2MACC
14:35]
The wicked remove landmarks; they steal away herds and pasture them. The asses of orphans they drive away; they take the widow's ox for a pledge. They force the needy off the road; all the poor of the land are driven into hiding. [JOB
24:2-4]
When there is no light the murderer rises, to kill the poor and
needy. [JOB 24:14]
I was a father to the needy; the rights of the stranger I
studied [JOB 29:16]
The needy will never be forgotten, nor will the hope of the
afflicted ever fade. [PS 9:19]
You listen, LORD, to the needs of the poor; you encourage them
and hear their prayers. [PS 10:17]
May the LORD cut off all deceiving lips, and every boastful tongue, Those who say, "By our tongues we prevail; when our lips speak, who can lord it over us?"
"Because they rob the weak, and the needy groan, I will now arise," says the LORD; "I will grant safety to whoever longs for it." [PS
12:4-6]
Let ruin overtake them unawares; let the snare they have set catch them; let them fall into the pit they have dug. Then I will rejoice in the LORD, exult in God's salvation. My very bones shall say, "O LORD, who is like you,
Who rescue the afflicted from the powerful, the afflicted and needy from the despoiler?" [PS
35:8-10]
You claimed a land as your own, O God; your people settled there.
There you poured abundant rains, God, graciously given to the poor in their need. [PS
68:10-11]
He shows pity to the needy and the poor and saves the lives of
the poor. [PS 72:13]
Let not the oppressed turn back in shame; may the poor and needy praise your name. Arise, God, defend your cause; remember the constant jeers of the fools. [PS
74:21-22]
Defend the lowly and fatherless; render justice to the
afflicted and needy. [PS 82:3]
But you, LORD, my God, deal kindly with me for your name's sake; in your great mercy rescue me. For I am sorely in need; my heart is pierced within me. [PS
109:21-22]
Who is like the LORD, our God enthroned on high, looking down on heaven and earth? The LORD raises the needy from the dust, lifts the poor from the ash heap, Seats them with princes, the princes of the people, Gives the childless wife a home, the joyful mother of children.
Hallelujah! [PS 113:5-9]
Slanderers will not survive on earth; evil will quickly entrap the violent. For I know the LORD will secure justice for the needy, their rights for the poor. [PS
140:12-13]
He who oppresses the poor blasphemes his Maker, but he who is
kind to the needy glorifies him. [PROV 14:31]
Injure not the poor because they are poor, nor crush the needy at the gate; For the LORD will defend their cause, and will plunder the lives of those who plunder them.
[PROV 22:22-23]
If you find honey, eat only what you need, lest you become
glutted with it and vomit it up. [PROV 25:16]
Two things I ask of you, deny them not to me before I die: Put falsehood and lying far from me, give me neither poverty nor riches; (provide me only with the food I need;) Lest, being full, I deny you, saying, "Who is the LORD?"
Or, being in want, I steal, and profane the name of my God. [PROV
30:7-9]
There is a group whose incisors are swords, whose teeth are
knives, Devouring the needy from the earth, and the poor from
among men. [PROV 30:14]
It is not for kings, O Lemuel, not for kings to drink wine; strong drink is not for princes! Lest in drinking they forget what the law decrees, and violate the rights of all who are in need. Give strong drink to one who is perishing, and wine to the sorely depressed; When they drink, they will forget their misery, and think no more of their burdens.
[PROV 31:4-7]
Open your mouth in behalf of the dumb, and for the rights of the destitute; Open your mouth, decree what is just, defend the needy and the poor!
[PROV 31:8-9]
When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize... She brings him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her fingers ply the spindle. She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy.
[PROV 31:10-12,19-20]
Let us oppress the needy just man; let us neither spare the
widow nor revere the old man for his hair grown white with time.
[WISDOM 2:10]
For by the things through which their foes were punished they
in their need were benefited. [WISDOM 11:5]
For your creation, serving you, its maker, grows tense for punishment against the wicked, but is relaxed in benefit for those who trust in you. Therefore at that very time, transformed in all sorts of ways, it was serving your all-nourishing bounty according to what they needed and desired; That your sons whom you loved might learn, O LORD, that it is not the various kinds of fruits that nourish man, but it is your word that preserves those who believe you! [WISDOM
16:24-26]
My son, rob not the poor man of his livelihood; force not the
eyes of the needy to turn away. [SIRACH 4:1]
A hungry man grieve not, a needy man anger not [SIRACH 4:2]
Do not exasperate the downtrodden; delay not to give to the
needy. [SIRACH 4:3]
From the needy turn not your eyes, give no man reason to curse you; For if in the bitterness of his soul he curse you, his Creator will hear his prayer.
[SIRACH 4:5-6]
Reject not the tradition of old men which they have learned
from their fathers; From it you will obtain the knowledge how to
answer in time of need. [SIRACH 8:9]
Flaunt not your wisdom in managing your affairs, and boast not
in your time of need. [SIRACH 10:25]
Say not: "What do I need? What further pleasure can be mine?" Say not: "I am independent. What harm can come to me now?" The day of prosperity makes one forget adversity; the day of adversity makes one forget prosperity.
[SIRACH 11:23-25]
As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you. As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence; When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.
[SIRACH 13:4-6]
Say not: "It was God's doing that I fell away"; for what he hates he does not do. Say not: "It was he who set me astray"; for he has no need of wicked man. Abominable wickedness the LORD hates, he does not let it befall those who fear him.
[SIRACH 15:11-13]
From a friend in need of support no one need hide in shame; But from him who brings harm to his friend all will stand aloof who hear of it.
[SIRACH 22:25-6]
Lend to your neighbor in his hour of need, and pay back your
neighbor when a loan falls due; Keep your promise, be honest with him, and you will always come
by what you need. [SIRACH 29:2-3]
Because of the precept, help the needy, and in their want, do
not send them away empty-handed. [SIRACH 29:9]
Life's prime needs are water, bread, and clothing, a house,
too, for decent privacy. [SIRACH 29:21]
Be it little or much, be content with what you have, and pay no heed to him who would disparage your home; A miserable life it is to go from house to house, for as a guest you dare not open your mouth. The visitor has no thanks for filling the cups; besides, you will hear these bitter words: "Come here, stranger, set the table, give me to eat the food you have! Away, stranger, for one more worthy; for my brother's visit I need the room!"
[SIRACH 29:23-27]
The bread of charity is life itself for the needy; he who
withholds it is a man of blood. [SIRACH 34:21]
Then give the doctor his place lest he leave; for you need him
too. [SIRACH 38:12]
All these men are skilled with their hands, each one an expert at his own task; Without them no city could be lived in, and wherever they stay, they need not hunger. They do not occupy the judge's bench, nor are they prominent in the assembly;
They set forth no decisions or judgments, nor are they found among the rulers; Yet they maintain God's ancient handiwork, and their concern is for exercise of their skill.
[SIRACH 38:33-34]
The works of God are all of them good; in its own time every
need is supplied. [SIRACH 39:16]
No cause then to say: "What is the purpose of this?"
Everything is chosen to satisfy a need. [SIRACH 39:21]
Chief of all needs for human life are water and fire, iron and salt,
The heart of the wheat, milk and honey, the blood of the grape, and oil, and cloth; For the good all these are good, but for the wicked they turn out evil.
[SIRACH 39:26-27]
The works of God are all of them good; every need when it comes
he fills. [SIRACH 39:33]
Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better than either, fear of God.
Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting; he who has it need seek no other support: The fear of God is a paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious.
[SIRACH 40:26-27]
Perennial is his almighty wisdom; he is from all eternity one and the same, With nothing added, nothing taken away; no need of a counselor for him! How beautiful are all his works! even to the spark and the fleeting vision! The universe lives and abides forever; to meet each need, each creature is preserved. All of them differ, one from another, yet none of them has he made in vain,
For each in turn, as it comes, is good; can one ever see enough of their splendor?
[SIRACH 42:21-25]
Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and who write oppressive decrees, Depriving the needy of judgment and robbing my people's poor of their rights,
Making widows their plunder, and orphans their prey! What will you do on the day of punishment, when ruin comes from afar?
To whom will you flee for help? [Taken from ISA 10:1-3]
In the year that King Ahaz died, there came this oracle: Rejoice not, O Philistia, not a man of you, that the rod which smote you is broken;
For out of the serpent's root shall come an adder, its fruit shall be a flying saraph. In my pastures the poor shall eat, and the needy lie down in safety;
But I will kill your root with famine that shall slay even your remnant. [ISA
14:28-30]
O LORD, you are my God, I will extol you and praise your name;
For you have fulfilled your wonderful plans of old, faithful and true. For you are a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the needy in distress;
Shelter from the rain, shade from the heat. As with the cold rain, as with the desert heat, even so you quell the uproar of the wanton. [ISA
25:1,4-5]
Trust in the LORD forever! For the LORD is an eternal Rock. He humbles those in high places, and the lofty city he brings down;
He tumbles it to the ground, levels it with the dust. It is trampled underfoot by the needy, by the footsteps of the poor. [ISA
26:4-6]
O people of Zion, who dwell in Jerusalem, no more will you weep;
He will be gracious to you when you cry out, as soon as he hears he will answer you. The Lord will give you the bread you need and the water for which you thirst.
No longer will your Teacher hide himself, but with your own eyes you shall see your Teacher, While from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears: "This is the way; walk in it," when you would turn to the right or to the left. [ISA
30:19-21]
And the trickster uses wicked trickery, planning crimes: How to
ruin the poor with lies, and the needy when they plead their case.
[ISA 32:7]
The afflicted and the needy seek water in vain, their tongues
are parched with thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them; I, the God
of Israel, will not forsake them. [ISA 41:17]
O Hope of Israel, O LORD, our savior in time of need! Why
should you be a stranger in this land, like a traveler who has
stopped but for a night? [JER 14:8]
I will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so
that they need no longer fear and tremble; and none shall be
missing, says the LORD. [JER 23:4]
No longer will they have need to teach their friends and
kinsmen how to know the LORD. All, from least to greatest, shall
know me, says the LORD, for I will forgive their evildoing and
remember their sin no more. [JER 31:34]
On our necks is the yoke of those who drive us; we are worn out, but allowed no rest. To Egypt we submitted, and to Assyria, to fill our need of bread. Our fathers, who sinned, are no more; but we bear their guilt. [LAM
5:5-7]
As I live, says the Lord GOD, I swear that your sister Sodom, with her daughters, has not done as you and your daughters have done! And look at the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters were proud, sated with food, complacent in their prosperity, and they gave no help to the poor and needy. Rather, they became haughty and committed abominable crimes in my presence; then, as you have seen, I removed them. [EZEK
16:48-50]
But if he begets a son who is a thief, a murderer, or who does any of these things (though the father does none of them), a son who eats on the mountains, defiles the wife of his neighbor, oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not give back a pledge, raises his eyes to idols, does abominable things, lends at interest and exacts
usury - this son certainly shall not live. Because he practiced all these abominations, he shall surely die; his death shall be his own fault.
[EZEK 18:10-13]
The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they afflict the poor and the needy, and oppress the resident alien without justice. Thus I have searched among them for someone who could build a wall or stand in the breach before me to keep me from destroying the land; but I found no one. Therefore I have poured out my fury upon them; with my fiery wrath I have consumed them; I have brought down their conduct upon their heads, says the Lord GOD. [EZEK
22:29-31]
Yes, I know how many are your crimes, how grievous your sins:
Oppressing the just, accepting bribes, repelling the needy at the gate! Therefore the prudent man is silent at this time, for it is an evil time. Seek good and not evil, that you may live;
Then truly will the LORD, the God of hosts, be with you as you claim! [AMOS
5:12-14]
Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land! "When will the new moon be over," you ask, "that we may sell our grain, and the sabbath, that we may display the wheat?
We will diminish the ephah, add to the shekel, and fix our scales for cheating! We will buy the lowly man for silver, and the poor man for a pair of sandals; even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!" The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done! [AMOS
8:4-7]
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him. [MT
3:13-15]
In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that
they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. [MT
6:7-8]
So do not worry and say, 'What are we to eat?' or 'What are we to drink?' or 'What are we to wear?' All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given you besides. [MT 6:31-33]
The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher
eat with tax collectors and sinners?" He heard this and said, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick
do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.'
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners." [MT 9:11-13]
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations
will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous
will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
[MT 25:31-46]
Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors and said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" Jesus heard this and said to them (that), "Those who are well do not need a physician,
but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners." [MK
2:16-17]
As he was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath, his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain. At this the Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the
sabbath?" He said to them, "Have you never read what David did
when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry? How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat, and shared it with his companions?" Then he said to them, "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the
sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the
sabbath." [MK 2:23-28]
As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary (who) sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me." The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."
[LK 10:38-42]
And he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,' and he says in reply from within, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.' I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his
persistence". [LK 11:5-8]
As for you, do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not worry anymore. All the nations of the world seek for these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these other things will be given you besides.
[LK 12:29-31]
I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in
heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous
people who have no need of repentance. [LK 15:7]
Then he said, "A man had two sons, and the younger son
said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of your estate that
should come to me.' So the father divided the property between
them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his
belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered
his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent
everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found
himself in dire need. Coming to his senses he thought, 'How many
of my father's hired workers have more than enough food to eat,
but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my
father and I shall say to him, "Father, I have sinned against
heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son;
treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers."' So
he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long
way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with
compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His
son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against
you; I no longer deserve to be called your son. But his father
ordered his servants, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on
him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet...Then let
us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and
has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.' Then the
celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field
and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound
of music and dancing. He became angry, and when he refused to
enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said
to him, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is
yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother
was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been
found.'" [Taken from LK 15:11-14, 17-25, 28, 31-32]
He said to them, "When I sent you forth without a money
bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything?"
"No, nothing," they replied. [LK 22:35]
Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Master, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later." Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me." Simon Peter said to him, "Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well." Jesus said to him, "Whoever has bathed
has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all."
[JN 13:5-10]
All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one's need. [ACTS
2:44-45]
The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. [ACTS
4:32-35]
"I have never wanted anyone's silver or gold or clothing. You know well that these very hands have served my needs and my companions. In every way I have shown you that by hard work of that sort we must help the weak, and keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus who himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" [ACTS
20:33-35]
"And so, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. On the contrary, first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem and throughout the whole country of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached the need to repent and turn to God, and to do works giving evidence of repentance. That is why the Jews seized me (when I was) in the temple and tried to kill me." [ACTS
26:19-21]
In the vicinity of that place were lands belonging to a man named Publius, the chief of the island. He welcomed us and received us cordially as his guests for three days. It so happened that the father of Publius was sick with a fever and dysentery. Paul visited him and, after praying, laid his hands on him and healed him. After this had taken place, the rest of the sick on the island came to Paul and were cured. They paid us great honor and when we eventually set sail they brought us the provisions we needed. [ACTS
28:7-10]
Contribute to the needs of the holy ones, exercise hospitality.
[ROM 12:13]
I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is (also) a minister
[e.g. servant, attendant] of the church at Cenchreae, that you may receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the holy ones, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a benefactor to many and to me as well.
[Taken from ROM 16:1-2]
But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need you," nor again the head to the feet, "I do not need you." Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary, and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable we surround with greater honor, and our less presentable parts are treated with greater propriety, whereas our more presentable parts do not need this. But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it, so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same concern for one another. If (one) part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy. [1COR
12:20-26]
And I am giving counsel in this matter, for it is appropriate for you who began not only to act but to act willingly last year: complete it now, so that your eager
willingness may be matched by your completion of it out of what you have. For if the eagerness is there, it is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have; not that others should have relief while you are burdened, but that as a matter of equality your surplus at the present time should supply their needs, so that their surplus may also supply your needs, that there may be equality. As it is written:
"Whoever had much did not have more, and whoever had little did not have less." [2COR
8:10-15]
Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so
that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an
abundance for every good work. [2COR 9:8]
You are being enriched in every way for all generosity, which through us produces thanksgiving to God, for the administration of this public service is not only supplying the needs of the holy ones but is also overflowing in many acts of thanksgiving to God. [2COR
9:11-12]
Did I make a mistake when I humbled myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you without charge? I plundered other churches by accepting from them in order to minister to you. And when I was with you and in need, I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied my needs. So I refrained and will refrain from burdening you in any way. [2COR
11:7-9]
The thief must no longer steal, but rather labor, doing honest
work with his (own) hands, so that he may have something to share
with one in need. [EPH 4:28]
Not that I say this because of need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I find myself, to be self-sufficient. I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me. Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress. You Philippians indeed know that at the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, not a single church shared with me in an account of giving and receiving, except you alone. For even when I was at Thessalonica you sent me something for my needs, not only once but more than once. It is not that I am eager for the gift; rather, I am eager for the profit that accrues to your account. I have received full payment and I abound. I am very well supplied because of what I received from you through Epaphroditus, "a fragrant aroma," an acceptable sacrifice,
pleasing to God. My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen. [PHIL
4:11-20]
But let our people, too, learn to devote themselves to good
works to supply urgent needs, so that they may not be
unproductive. [TI 3:14]
Although you should be teachers by this time, you need to have
someone teach you again the basic elements of the utterances of
God. You need milk, (and) not solid food. [HEB 5:12]
If, then, perfection came through the levitical priesthood, on
the basis of which the people received the law, what need would
there still have been for another priest to arise according to the
order of Melchizedek, and not reckoned according to the order of
Aaron? [HEB 7:11]
You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he
has promised. [HEB 10:36]
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. This need not be
so, my brothers. [JMS 3:10]
The way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him? Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.
[1JN 3:16-18]
Beloved, although I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation,
I now feel a need to write to encourage you to contend for the faith that was once for all handed down to the holy ones. For there have been some intruders, who long ago were designated for this condemnation, godless persons, who pervert the grace of our God into licentiousness and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. [JUDE
1:3-4]
For you say, 'I am rich and affluent and have no need of
anything,' and yet do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable,
poor, blind, and naked. [RV 3:17]
The city had no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the
glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was the Lamb. [RV 21:23]
Night will be no more, nor will they need light from lamp or
sun, for the Lord God shall give them light, and they shall reign
forever and ever. [RV 22:5]
