"We
hear them sometimes speak of devotion to our Blessed Lady, not for
the purpose of establishing it and persuading men to embrace it,
but to destroy the abuses which are made of it; and all the while
these teachers are without piety or tender devotion toward
Thyself, simply because they have none for Mary. They regard the
Rosary and the Scapular as devotions proper for weak and ignorant
minds, without which men can save themselves; and if there falls
into their hands any poor client of Our Lady who says his Rosary,
or has any other practice of devotion toward her, they soon change
his spirit and his heart. Instead of the Rosary, they counsel him
the seven Penitential Psalms. Instead of devotion to the holy
Virgin, they counsel him devotion to Jesus Christ. O my sweet
Jesus, do these people have Thy spirit? Do they please Thee in
acting thus? Does it please Thee when, for fear of displeasing
Thee, we neglect doing our utmost to please Thy Mother? Does
devotion to Thy holy Mother hinder devotion to Thyself? Does she
attribute to herself the honor we pay her? Does she head a faction
of her own? Is she a stranger who has no connection with Thee?
Does it displease Thee that we should try to please her? Do we
separate or alienate ourselves from Thy love by giving ourselves
to her and honoring her? Yet, my sweet Master, the greater part of
the learned could not discourage devotion to Thy holy mother more,
and could now show more indifference to it, even if all that I
have just said were true. Thus have they been punished for their
pride! Keep me, Lord, keep me form their sentiments and their
practices, and give me some share of the sentiments of gratitude,
esteem, respect and love which Thou hast in regard to Thy holy
Mother, so that the more I imitate and follow her, the more I may
love and glorify Thee. So, as if up to this point I had still said
nothing in honor of Thy holy Mother, 'give me now the grace to
praise Thee worthily,' in spite of all her enemies, who are Thine
as well; and grant me to say loudly with the saints, 'Let not that
man presume to look for the mercy of God who offends His holy
Mother.'" (St. Louis Marie de Montfort)

Deceptive
Piety Towards Mary / Presumptuous Devotees
Also See:
Blessed Virgin Mary (Topic Page)
|
"Let
them each one fully convince himself of this, that if his piety
towards the Blessed Virgin does not hinder him from sinning, or
does not move his will to amend an evil life, it is a piety
deceptive and lying, wanting as it is in proper effect and its
natural fruit." (Pope St. Pius X, "Ad Diem Illum
Laetissimum", 1904)
"Presumptuous
devotees are sinners abandoned to their passions, or lovers of the
world, who under the fair name of Christians and clients of our
Blessed Lady conceal pride, avarice, impurity, drunkenness, anger,
swearing, detraction, injustice or some other sin. They sleep in
peace in the midst of their bad habits, without doing any violence
to themselves to correct their faults, under the pretext that they
are devout to the Blessed Virgin... Nothing in Christianity is
more detestable than this diabolical presumption. For how can we
truly say that we love and honor our Blessed Lady when by our sins
we are pitilessly piercing, wounding, crucifying and outraging
Jesus Christ, her Son? If Mary laid down a law to herself, to save
by her mercy this sort of people, she would be authorizing crime
and helping crucify and outrage her Son. Who would ever dare think
of such a thing?" (St. Louis Marie de Montfort)

"We
cannot separate Mary and Joseph, were it only for their having
such close connection with the mystery of the Incarnation - Mary
as being the Mother of the Son of God; and Joseph, as being
guardian of the Virgin's spotless honor, and Foster-Father of the
divine Babe." (Gueranger)
"But
why is He conceived not of a Virgin merely, but of a Virgin
espoused? First, that by the descent of Joseph, Mary's family
might be made known; secondly, that she might not be stoned by the
Jews as an adulteress; thirdly, that in her flight into Egypt she
might have the comfort of a husband. The Martyr Ignatius adds yet
a fourth reason, namely, that his birth might be hid from the
Devil, looking for Him to be born of a wife and not of a
virgin" (St. Jerome, Doctor of the Church)

"The
honor of the Mother reflects on the Son." (St. John

"[W]hatever
honor and praise are bestowed on the Mother redound to the
Son." (Pope Pius IX, "Ineffabilis Deus", 1854)
"That which is given to the Mother redounds
to the Son; the honor given to the Queen is honor bestowed on the
King." (St. Ildephonsus)
"For the honor which we
give to [the Mother of the Lord] is referred to Him Who was made incarnate of
her." (St. John of Damascus, Doctor of the Church)
"Let us not imagine that we obscure the
glory of the Son by the praise we lavish on the Mother; for the
more she is honored, the greater is the glory of her Son."
(St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Doctor of the Church)
"The
honor given to the Mother reflects on her Son, because the Mother
is to be honored for her Son's sake." (St. Thomas Aquinas,
Doctor of the Church and "greatest theologian in the history
of the Church")
"Indeed,
in loving Mary we honor God, who raised her to the dignity of the
Mother of his Son made man, and we unite ourselves with Jesus
Christ who loved her as a mother. We will never love her as he
loved her: 'Jesus was the first to honor her as his mother, and we
must imitate him in this also. We will never be able to equal the
love with which Jesus loved her'." (Pope John Paul II)

Mary
& The Church

"While it is an historical fact that the
Church came forth from the Upper Room on the day of Pentecost, in
a certain sense one can say that she has never left it.
Spiritually the event of Pentecost does not belong only to the
past: the Church is always in the Upper Room that she bears in her
heart. The Church perseveres...like the Apostles together with
Mary, the Mother of Christ, and with those who in Jerusalem were
the first seed of the Christian community and who awaited in
prayer the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Church perseveres in
prayer with Mary. This union of the praying Church with the Mother
of Christ has been part of the mystery of the Church from the
beginning: we see her present in this mystery as she is present in
the mystery of her Son." (Pope John Paul II)
"Mary is the Mother of the Church not only
because she is the Mother of Christ and His most intimate
associate in 'the new economy when the Son of God took a human
nature from her, that He might in the mysteries of His flesh free
man from sin,' but also because 'she shines forth to the whole
community of the elect as a model of the virtues.' Indeed, just as
no human mother can limit her task to the generation of a new man
but must extend it to the function of nourishing and educating her
offspring, thus the blessed Virgin Mary, after participating in
the redeeming sacrifice of the Son, and in such an intimate way as
to deserve to be proclaimed by Him the Mother not only of His
disciple John but - may we be allowed to affirm it - of mankind
which he in some way represents, now continues to fulfill from
heaven her maternal function as the cooperator in the birth and
development of divine life in the individual souls of redeemed
men. This is a most consoling truth which, by the free consent of
God the All-Wise, is an integrating part of the mystery of human
salvation; therefore it must be held as faith by all
Christians." (Pope Paul VI, 1967
A.D.)

Mary / Ark of the Covenant

"The Ark contained the Tablets of the Law;
Mary contained in her womb the heir of the Testament. The Ark bore
the Law; Mary bore the Gospel. The Ark make the voice of God
heard; Mary gave us the very Word of God. The Ark shone forth with
the purest of gold; Mary shone forth both inwardly and outwardly
with the splendor of virginity. The gold which adorned the Ark
came from the interior of the earth; the gold with which Mary
shown forth came from the mines of heaven." (St. Ambrose,
Doctor of the Church)
"The
Blessed Mother, Mary, raises the Divine Infant from the Crib; she
presses him to heart; she places him on her knees; it is our God,
Emmanuel, throned, but with such love and majesty on the Ark of
the New Covenant. How far is the glory of Mary above that of the
other living Throne formed for the Eternal Word by the trembling
wings of Cherubim! And the Ark of Moses, made of corruptible wood,
covered with plates of gold, holding within it the Manna and the
Rod of Aaron and the very Tables of the Law - it is not a figure
that pales in the presence of the holiness and the dignity of the
Mother of God?" (Dom Gueranger)

"[A]t the Visitation, [Mary] bore in her womb
the Word made flesh...[and] became in some way a 'tabernacle' -
the first 'tabernacle' in history - in which the Son of God, still
invisible to our human gaze, allowed himself to be adored by
Elizabeth, radiating his light as it were through the eyes and the
voice of Mary." (Pope John Paul II, 2003 A.D.)
"He,
whom earth, and sea, and the firmament, worship, adore, and
praise; he, the King of the triple kingdom, is carried in Mary's
womb. The womb of a Virgin, who has been filled with heavenly
grace, bears him, whom the moon, and sun, and all creatures serve
in the order marked for them. O Mother, blessed in her great
office! He, the sovereign Creator, who holds the world in the
palm of his hand, is enclosed in the tabernacle of her womb. The
angelic messenger proclaims her blessed; the Holy Spirit makes her
fruitful; and the Desired of nations is born of her. Glory be to
thee, O Jesus, that wast born of the Virgin! And to the Father,
and to the Spirit of love, for everlasting ages. Amen."

"If,
then, we establish solid devotion to our Blessed Lady, it is only
to establish more perfectly devotion to Jesus Christ, and to
provide an easy and secure means for finding Jesus Christ. If
devotion to Our Lady removed us from Jesus Christ, we should have
to reject it as an illusion of the devil; but so far from this
being the case, devotion to Our Lady is, on the contrary,
necessary for us...as a means of finding Jesus Christ perfectly,
of loving Him tenderly, of serving Him faithfully." (St.
Louis Marie de Montfort)
"Spiritual
persons, therefore, must not fall into the false belief that Mary
can be a hindrance to them in attaining divine union; for is it
possible that she who has found grace before God for the whole
world in general and for each one in particular, should be a
hindrance to a soul in finding the great grace of union with Him?
Can it be possible that she who has been full and superabounding
with graces, so united and transformed...that it has been a kind
of necessity that He should be incarnate in her, should be a
stumbling-block in the way of a soul's perfect union with
God?" (St. Louis Marie de Montfort)

"Being
the sure means and the straight and immaculate way to go to Jesus
Christ and to find Him perfectly, it is by her that the souls who
are to shine forth especially in sanctity have to find Our Lord.
He who shall find Mary shall find life (cf. Prov. 8:35), that is,
Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (Jn.
14:6). But no one can find Mary who does not seek her; and no one
can seek her who does not know her; for we cannot seek or desire
an unknown object. It is necessary, then, for the greater
knowledge and glory of the Most Holy Trinity, that Mary should be
more than ever known." (St. Louis Marie de Montfort)

No Honor of Mary is Too
High
Also See:
Blessed Virgin Mary (Topic Page)
|
"If Mary
is the Mother of God, what wonder, then, that God has glorified
and will glorify, though all ages, her power of intercession with
Him for all men? The Eternal Father has chosen Mary to be the
mother of His only Son; the Holy Spirit chose her as His spouse.
The Son, who has promised a throne in heaven to the apostles who
preached His word, is bound in justice to do more for the Mother
who bore Him, the eternal Word. If we believe in honoring our
mother, surely He believes in honoring and glorifying His. Now
what honors, what prerogatives, should God bestow on her whom He
has so favored, and who served Him so devotedly! How should she be
honored whom the King of Heaven deigns to honor!... How should
Jesus reward the loving Mother who bore Him, nursed Him, saved Him
in his infancy from a most cruel death? Is there any honor too
high for her whom God himself has so honored? Is there any glory
too dazzling for her whom the God of glory has chosen for His
dwelling place?" (Muller)
"Let
us not be surprised, therefore, at the enthusiasm and profound
respect wherewith the Church extols the Blessed Virgin and her
prerogatives. Let us on the contrary be convinced that all the
praise the Church can give her, and all the devotion she can ever
bear towards her, are far below what is due to her as Mother of
the Incarnate God. No mortal will ever be able to describe, or
even comprehend, how great a glory accrues to her from this
sublime dignity. For, as the glory of Mary comes from her being
the Mother of God, one would have first to comprehend God himself
in order to measure the greatness of her dignity. It is to God
that Mary gave our human nature; it is God whom she had as her
Child; it is God who gloried in rendering himself, inasmuch as he
is Man, subject to her: hence, the true value of such a dignity
possessed by a mere creature, can only be appreciated in
proportion to our knowledge of the sovereign perfections of the
great God, who thus deigns to make himself dependent upon that
favored creature. Let us therefore bow down in deepest adoration
before the Majesty of our God; let us therefore acknowledge that
we cannot respect as it deserves the extraordinary dignity of her
whom He chose for His Mother." (Dom Gueranger)

and privilege to have one of her pictures or statues in our home,
which from time to time will remind us of her." (St. John
Vianney)

BIG Book of Latin Activities For Catholics
Beginning - Intermediate (Vol. 1)

"Suitable For Children Or
Adults!" ~ "Perfect For Home Schoolers!"
+ + +
As many faithful Catholics already know,
the majestic
Latin language – the 'official language' of the Catholic Church –
promotes unity, helps safeguard the purity of doctrine, connects us with
our Catholic ancestors, allows us to pray in "one voice", and even ties
back to the inscription on the Cross which was written in Hebrew, Latin,
and Greek. The Latin language is still used today in the precious
treasure that is the
Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, in 'everyday speech' (much of
English is derived from Latin), in mottos, in specialized fields, and in
educational endeavors. It has been shown that the study of Latin brings
many benefits. "And, Latin is truly the language of heaven!"
If you enjoy Latin, you may be glad to know that
this full-sized (8.5" x 11"), tradition-minded publication features an
assortment of activity types related to Latin (including: word searches,
crosswords, coloring activities, challenges, fill-ins, spelling bee,
quizzes, unscrambles, true/false, multiple choice, matching, cross-offs,
circling, word associations, translation exercises, and more...), and
treats of various topics (including: common Latin words, Latin language
facts, Latin grammar, nouns & verbs, abbreviations,
phrases / sayings / mottos, prefixes, cardinal numbers, grammatical gender,
inflection, word roots, diacritics / accenting, pronunciation, Latin
prayers / hymns, Scripture verses, Catholic phrases, and more...).
