"For this command
which I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for
you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say, 'Who will go up
in the sky to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry
it out?' Nor is it across the sea, that you should say, 'Who will
cross the sea to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may
carry it out?' No, it is something very near to you, already in
your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out." [DEUT
30:11-14]
Manoah said to him, "What is your name, that we may honor
you when your words come true?" The angel of the LORD
answered him, "Why do you ask my name, which is
mysterious?" [JUDG 13:17-18]
Then Manoah... offered it
on the rock to the LORD, whose works are mysteries. [Taken from
JUDG 13:19]
For a father, afflicted with untimely mourning, made an image
of the child so quickly taken from him, And now honored as a god
what was formerly a dead man and handed down to his subjects
mysteries and sacrifices. Then, in time, the impious practice
gained strength and was observed as law, and graven things were
worshiped by princely decrees. And this became a snare for
mankind, that men enslaved to either grief or tyranny conferred
the incommunicable Name on stocks and stones. Then it was not
enough for them to err in their knowledge of God; but even though
they live in a great war of ignorance, they call such evils peace.
For while they celebrate either child-slaying sacrifices or
clandestine mysteries, or frenzied carousals in unheard-of rites,
They no longer safeguard either lives or pure wedlock; but each
either waylays and kills his neighbor, or aggrieves him by
adultery. [Taken from WISDOM 14:15-16,21-24]
How different the man who devotes himself to the study of the
law of the Most High! He explores the wisdom of the men of old and
occupies himself with the prophecies; He treasures the discourses
of famous men, and goes to the heart of involved sayings; He
studies obscure parables, and is busied with the hidden meanings
of the sages. He is in attendance on the great, and has entrance
to the ruler. He travels among the peoples of foreign lands to
learn what is good and evil among men. His care is to seek the
LORD, his Maker, to petition the Most High, To open his lips in
prayer, to ask pardon for his sins. Then, if it pleases the LORD
Almighty, he will be filled with the spirit of understanding; He
will pour forth his words of wisdom and in prayer give thanks to
the LORD, Who will direct his knowledge and his counsel, as he
meditates upon his mysteries. He will show the wisdom of what he
has learned and glory in the law of the LORD'S covenant. [SIRACH
39:1-8]
Daniel went home and informed his companions Hananiah, Mishael,
and Azariah, that they might implore the mercy of the God of
heaven in regard to this mystery, so that Daniel and his
companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of
Babylon. During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a
vision, and he blessed the God of heaven [Taken from DAN 2:17-19]
The king asked Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, "Can
you tell me the dream that I had, and its meaning?" In the
king's presence Daniel made this reply: "The mystery about
which the king has inquired, the wise men, enchanters, magicians,
and astrologers could not explain to the king. But there is a God
in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has shown King
Nebuchadnezzar what is to happen in days to come; this was the
dream you saw as you lay in bed. To you in your bed there came
thoughts about what should happen in the future, and he who
reveals mysteries showed you what is to be. To me also this
mystery has been revealed; not that I am wiser than any other
living person, but in order that its meaning may be made known to
the king, that you may understand the thoughts in your own mind."
[DAN
2:26-30]
To Daniel the king said, "Truly your God is the God of
gods and Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries; that is why
you were able to reveal this mystery." [DAN 2:47]
I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, content and
prosperous. I had a terrifying dream as I lay in bed, and the
images and the visions of my mind frightened me. So I issued a
decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before
me to give the interpretation of the dream. When the magicians,
enchanters, Chaldeans, and astrologers had come in, I related the
dream before them; but none of them could tell me its meaning.
Finally there came before me Daniel, whose name is Belteshazzar
after the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy
God. I repeated the dream to him: "Belteshazzar, chief of the
magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy God is in you and no
mystery is too difficult for you; tell me the meaning of the
visions that I saw in my dream." [DAN 4:1-6]
The disciples approached him and said, "Why do you speak
to them in parables?" He said to them in reply, "Because
knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been
granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. To anyone who
has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has
not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to
them in parables, because 'they look but do not see and hear but
do not listen or understand.' Isaiah's prophecy is fulfilled in
them, which says: 'You shall indeed hear but not understand you
shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this
people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed
their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears
and understand with their heart and be converted, and I heal
them.'" [MT 13:10-15]
And when he was alone, those present along with the Twelve
questioned him about the parables. He answered them, "The
mystery of the kingdom of God has been granted to you. But to
those outside everything comes in parables, so that 'they may look
and see but not perceive, and hear and listen but not understand,
in order that they may not be converted and be forgiven.'" [MK
4:10-12]
Then his disciples asked him what the meaning of this parable
might be. He answered, "Knowledge of the mysteries of the
kingdom of God has been granted to you; but to the rest, they are
made known through parables so that 'they may look but not see,
and hear but not understand.'" [LK 8:9-10]
I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, so
that you will not become wise (in) your own estimation: a
hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of
the Gentiles comes in, and thus all Israel will be saved, as it is
written: "The deliverer will come out of Zion, he will turn
away godlessness from Jacob; and this is my covenant with them
when I take away their sins." In respect to the gospel, they
are enemies on your account; but in respect to election, they are
beloved because of the patriarchs. For the gifts and the call of
God are irrevocable. [ROM 11:25-29]
Now to him who can strengthen you, according to my gospel and
the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of
the mystery kept secret for long ages but now manifested through
the prophetic writings and, according to the command of the
eternal God, made known to all nations to bring about the
obedience of faith, to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ be
glory forever and ever. Amen. [Taken from ROM 16:25-27]
When I came to you, brothers, proclaiming the mystery of God, I
did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved
to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him
crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling,
and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive (words
of) wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit and power, so that
your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.
Yet we do speak a wisdom to those who are mature, but not a wisdom
of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away.
Rather, we speak God's wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God
predetermined before the ages for our glory, and which none of the
rulers of this age knew; for if they had known it, they would not
have crucified the Lord of glory. [1COR 2:1-8]
Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards
of the mysteries of God. [1COR 4:1]
If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I
am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift
of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I
have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am
nothing. [1COR 13:1-2]
Pursue love, but strive eagerly for the spiritual gifts, above
all that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue does not
speak to human beings but to God, for no one listens; he utters
mysteries in spirit. On the other hand, one who prophesies does
speak to human beings, for their building up, encouragement, and
solace. [1COR 14:1-3]
This I declare, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the
kingdom of God, nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold,
I tell you a mystery. We shall not all fall asleep, but we will
all be changed, in an instant, in the blink of an eye, at the last
trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For that which is
corruptible must clothe itself with incorruptibility, and that
which is mortal must clothe itself with immortality. And when this
which is corruptible clothes itself with incorruptibility and this
which is mortal clothes itself with immortality, then the word
that is written shall come about: "Death is swallowed up in
victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your
sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is
the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our
Lord Jesus Christ. [1COR 15:50-57]
In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of
transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace that he
lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight, he has made known to
us the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set
forth in him as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all
things in Christ, in heaven and on earth. [EPH 1:7-10]
Because of this, I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ (Jesus) for you
Gentiles - if, as I suppose, you have heard of the stewardship of
God's grace that was given to me for your benefit, (namely, that)
the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written
briefly earlier. When you read this you can understand my insight
into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to human
beings in other generations as it has now been revealed to his
holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit, that the Gentiles are
coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise
in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this I became a minister by
the gift of God's grace that was granted me in accord with the
exercise of his power. To me, the very least of all the holy ones,
this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable
riches of Christ, and to bring to light (for all) what is the plan
of the mystery hidden from ages past in God who created all
things, so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known
through the church to the principalities and authorities in the
heavens. This was according to the eternal purpose that he
accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness of
speech and confidence of access through faith in him. [EPH 3:1-12]
Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. For
the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the
church, he himself the savior of the body. As the church is
subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their
husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ
loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her,
cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might
present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle
or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So
(also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He
who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh
but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the
church, because we are members of his body. "For this reason
a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to
his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This is a
great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church. [EPH
5:22-32]
With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in
the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and
supplication for all the holy ones and also for me, that speech
may be given me to open my mouth, to make known with boldness the
mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador in chains, so
that I may have the courage to speak as I must. [EPH 6:18-20]
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I
am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on
behalf of his body, which is the church, of which I am a minister
in accordance with God's stewardship given to me to bring to
completion for you the word of God, the mystery hidden from ages
and from generations past. But now it has been manifested to his
holy ones, to whom God chose to make known the riches of the glory
of this mystery among the Gentiles; it is Christ in you, the hope
for glory. [COL 1:24-27]
For I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for you
and for those in Laodicea and all who have not seen me face to
face, that their hearts may be encouraged as they are brought
together in love, to have all the richness of fully assured
understanding, for the knowledge of the mystery of God, Christ, in
whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. [COL 2:1-3]
Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving; at
the same time, pray for us, too, that God may open a door to us
for the word, to speak of the mystery of Christ, for which I am in
prison, that I may make it clear, as I must speak. [COL 4:2-4]
We ask you, brothers, with regard to the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, not to be shaken out of
your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a
"spirit," or by an oral statement, or by a letter
allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at
hand. Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy
comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one doomed to
perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called
god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of
God, claiming that he is a god - do you not recall that while I
was still with you I told you these things? And now you know what
is restraining, that he may be revealed in his time. For the
mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who
restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is removed
from the scene. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom
the Lord (Jesus) will kill with the breath of his mouth and render
powerless by the manifestation of his coming, the one whose coming
springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in signs
and wonders that lie, and in every wicked deceit for those who are
perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth so that
they may be saved. Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving
power so that they may believe the lie, that all who have not
believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned. [2THES
2:1-12]
Similarly, deacons must be dignified, not deceitful, not
addicted to drink, not greedy for sordid gain, holding fast to the
mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. Moreover, they
should be tested first; then, if there is nothing against them,
let them serve as deacons. [1TM 3:8-10]
I am writing you about these matters, although I hope to visit
you soon. But if I should be delayed, you should know how to
behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living
God, the pillar and foundation of truth. Undeniably great is the
mystery of devotion, Who was manifested in the flesh, vindicated
in the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the Gentiles,
believed in throughout the world, taken up in glory. [1TM 3:14-16]
Then the angel I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised
his right hand to heaven and swore by the one who lives forever
and ever, who created heaven and earth and sea and all that is in
them, "There shall be no more delay. At the time when you
hear the seventh angel blow his trumpet, the mysterious plan of
God shall be fulfilled, as he promised to his servants the
prophets." [RV 10:5-7]
The woman was wearing purple and scarlet and adorned with gold,
precious stones, and pearls. She held in her hand a gold cup that
was filled with the abominable and sordid deeds of her harlotry.
On her forehead was written a name, which is a mystery,
"Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and of the
abominations of the earth." I saw that the woman was drunk on
the blood of the holy ones and on the blood of the witnesses to
Jesus. When I saw her I was greatly amazed. The angel said to me,
"Why are you amazed? I will explain to you the mystery of the
woman and of the beast that carries her, the beast with the seven
heads and the ten horns. The beast that you saw existed once but
now exists no longer. It will come up from the abyss and is headed
for destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not
been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world
shall be amazed when they see the beast, because it existed once
but exists no longer, and yet it will come again." [RV 17:4-8]
