Listen to the word of the LORD, O house of
Jacob! All you clans of the house of Israel, thus says the LORD:
What fault did your fathers find in me that they withdrew from me,
Went after empty idols, and became empty themselves? [JER 2:4-5]
"Let us lie down in our shame, let our disgrace
cover us, for we have sinned against the LORD, our God, From our
youth to this day, we and our fathers also; we listened not to the
voice of the LORD, our God." [JER 3:25]
And now, because you have committed all these
misdeeds, says the LORD, because you did not listen, though I
spoke to you untiringly; because you did not answer, though I
called you, I will do to this house named after me, in which you
trust, and to this place which I gave to you and your fathers,
just as I did to Shiloh. I will cast you away from me, as I cast
away all your brethren, all the offspring of Ephraim. You, now, do
not intercede for this people; raise not in their behalf a
pleading prayer! Do not urge me, for I will not listen to you. Do
you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah, in the
streets of Jerusalem? The children gather wood, their fathers
light the fire, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the
queen of heaven, while libations are poured out to strange gods in
order to hurt me. Is it I whom they hurt, says the LORD; is it not
rather themselves, to their own confusion? See now, says the Lord
GOD, my anger and my wrath will pour out upon this place... This
rather is what I commanded them: Listen to my voice; then I will
be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that
I command you, so that you may prosper. But they obeyed not, nor
did they pay heed. They walked in the hardness of their evil
hearts and turned their backs, not their faces, to me. From the
day that your fathers left the land of Egypt even to this day, I
have sent you untiringly all my servants the prophets. Yet they
have not obeyed me nor paid heed; they have stiffened their necks
and done worse than their fathers. When you speak all these words
to them, they will not listen to you either; when you call to
them, they will not answer you. Say to them: This is the nation
which does not listen to the voice of the LORD, its God, or take
correction. Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is

I listen closely: they speak what is not true;
No one repents of his wickedness, saying, "What have I
done!" Everyone keeps on running his course, like a steed
dashing into battle. [JER 8:6]
The LORD answered: Because they have abandoned
my law, which I set before them, and have not followed it or
listened to my voice, but followed rather the hardness of their
hearts and the Baals, as their fathers had taught them; therefore,
thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: See now, I will
give them wormwood to eat and poison to drink. I will scatter them
among nations whom neither they nor their fathers have known; I
will send the sword to pursue them until I have completely
destroyed them. [JER 9:12-15]
The following message came to Jeremiah from the
LORD: Speak to the men of Judah and to the citizens of Jerusalem,
saying to them: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Cursed be
the man who does not observe the terms of this covenant, which I
enjoined upon your fathers the day I brought them up out of the
land of Egypt, that iron foundry, saying: Listen to my voice and
do all that I command you. Then you shall be my people, and I will
be your God. Thus I will fulfill the oath which I swore to your
fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey: the one
you have today. "Amen, LORD," I answered. Then the LORD
said to me: Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in
the streets of Jerusalem: Hear the words of this covenant and obey
them. Urgently and constantly I warned your fathers to obey my
voice, from the day I brought them up out of the land of Egypt
even to this day. But they did not listen or give ear. Each one
followed the hardness of his evil heart, till I brought upon them
all the threats of this covenant which they had failed to observe
as I commanded them. A conspiracy has been found, the LORD said to
me, among the men of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem. They
have returned to the crimes of their forefathers who refused to
obey my words. They also have followed and served strange gods;
the covenant which I had made with their fathers, the house of
Israel and the house of Judah have broken. Therefore, thus says
the LORD: See, I bring upon them misfortune which they cannot
escape. Though they cry out to me, I will not listen to them. Then
the cities of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem will go and cry
out to the gods to which they have been offering incense. But
these gods will give them no help whatever when misfortune
strikes. Do not intercede on behalf of this people, nor utter a
plea for them. I will not listen when they call to me at the time
of their misfortune. [JER 11:1-12,14]
Give ear, listen humbly, for the LORD speaks.
Give glory to the LORD, your God, before it grows dark; Before
your feet stumble on darkening mountains; Before the light you
look for turns to darkness, changes into black clouds. If you do
not listen to this in your pride, I will weep in secret many
tears; My eyes will run with tears for the LORD'S flock, led away
to exile. [JER 13:15-17]
And you have done worse than your fathers. Here
you are, every one of you, walking in the hardness of his evil
heart instead of listening to me. [JER 16:12]
Bring no burden from your homes on the sabbath. Do no work whatever, but keep holy the sabbath, as I commanded your fathers,
though they did not listen or give ear, but stiffened their necks so as not to hear or take correction. [JER 17:22-23]
I spoke to you when you were secure, but you
answered, "I will not listen." This has been your way
from your youth, not to listen to my voice. The wind shall
shepherd all your shepherds, your lovers shall go into exile.
Surely then you shall be ashamed and confounded because of all
your wickedness. You who dwell on Lebanon, who nest in the cedars,
How you shall groan when pains come upon you, like the pangs of a
woman in travail! [JER 22:21-23]
Though you refused to listen or pay heed, the
LORD has sent you without fail all his servants the prophets with
this message: Turn back, each of you, from your evil way and from
your evil deeds; then you shall remain in the land which the LORD
gave you and your fathers, from of old and forever. Do not follow
strange gods to serve and adore them, lest you provoke me with
your handiwork, and I bring evil upon you. But you would not
listen to me, says the LORD, and so you provoked me with your
handiwork to your own harm. Hence, thus says the LORD of hosts:
Since you would not listen to my words, lo! I will send for and
fetch all the tribes of the north, says the LORD (and I will send
to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, my servant); I will bring them
against this land, against its inhabitants, and against all these
neighboring nations. I will doom them, making them an object of
horror, of ridicule, of everlasting reproach. [JER 25:4-9]
In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, son
of Josiah, king of Judah, this message came from the LORD: Thus
says the LORD: Stand in the court of the house of the LORD and
speak to the people of all the cities of Judah who come to worship
in the house of the LORD; whatever I command you, tell them, and
omit nothing. Perhaps they will listen and turn back, each from
his evil way, so that I may repent of the evil I have planned to
inflict upon them for their evil deeds. [JER 26:1-3]
But now, listen to what I am about to state in
your hearing and the hearing of all the people. From of old, the
prophets who were before you and me prophesied war, woe, and
pestilence against many lands and mighty kingdoms. But the prophet
who prophesies peace is recognized as truly sent by the LORD only
when his prophetic prediction is fulfilled. [JER 28:7-9]
Promote the welfare of the city to which I have
exiled you; pray for it to the LORD, for upon its welfare depends
your own. Thus says the LORD: Only after seventy years have
elapsed for Babylon will I visit you and fulfill for you my
promise to bring you back to this place. For I know well the plans
I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare, not
for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope. When you call
me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look
for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your
heart, you will find me with you, says the LORD, and I will change
your lot; I will gather you together from all the nations and all
the places to which I have banished you, says the LORD, and bring
you back to the place from which I have exiled you. [JER
29:7,10-14]
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
Do not let yourselves be deceived by the prophets and diviners who
are among you; do not listen to those among you who dream dreams.
For they prophesy lies to you in my name; I did not send them,
says the LORD. [Taken from JER 29:8-9]
For they did not listen to my words, says the
LORD, though I kept sending them my servants the prophets, only to
have them go unheeded, says the LORD. [JER 29:19]
With strong hand and outstretched arm you
brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt amid signs and
wonders and great terror. This land you gave them, as you had
promised their fathers under oath, a land flowing with milk and
honey. They entered and took possession of it, but they did not
listen to your voice; by your law they did not live, and what you
commanded they failed to do. Hence you let all these evils befall

Zedekiah, son of Josiah; he was made king over the land of Judah
by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. Neither he, nor his ministers,
nor the people of the land would listen to the words of the LORD
spoken by Jeremiah the prophet. [JER 37:1-2]
From all the men who knew that their wives were
burning incense to strange gods, from all the women who were
present in the immense crowd, and from all the people who lived in
Lower and Upper Egypt, Jeremiah received this answer: "We
will not listen to what you say in the name of the LORD."

they will not listen to me. For the whole house of Israel is
stubborn of brow and obstinate in heart. [EZEK 3:4-7]
Then I said to them: Throw away, each of you,
the detestable things that have held your eyes; do not defile
yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the LORD, your God. But
they rebelled against me and refused to listen to me; none of them
threw away the detestable things that had held their eyes, they
did not abandon the idols of Egypt. Then I thought of pouring out
my fury on them and spending my anger on them there in the land of
Egypt; but I acted for my name's sake, that it should not be
profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they were, in
whose presence I had made myself known to them, revealing that I
would bring them out of the land of Egypt. [EZEK 20:7-9]
As for you, house of Israel, thus says the Lord
GOD: Come, each one of you, destroy your idols! Then listen to me,
and never again profane my holy name with your gifts and your
idols. [EZEK 20:39]
The man said to me, "Son of man, look
carefully and listen intently, and pay strict attention to all
that I will show you, for you have been brought here so that I
might show it to you. Tell the house of Israel all that you
see." [EZEK 40:4]
Then he said to me: Son of man, pay strict
attention, look carefully, and listen intently to all that I will
tell you about the statutes and laws of the LORD'S temple; be
attentive in regard to those who are to be admitted to the temple
and all those who are to be excluded from the sanctuary. [EZEK

God, by turning back from our wickedness and recognizing his

and see our ruins and the city which bears your name. When we
present our petition before you, we rely not on our just deeds,

Then they who fear the LORD spoke with one
another, and the LORD listened attentively; And a record book was
written before him of those who fear the LORD and trust in his
name. And they shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, my own
special possession, on the day I take action. And I will have
compassion on them, as a man has compassion on his son who serves
him. Then you will again see the distinction between the just and
the wicked; Between him who serves God, and him who does not serve
him. [MAL 3:16-18]
[Jesus said,] "Everyone who listens to
these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who
built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the
winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had
been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words
of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his
house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew
and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely

Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing
them thus, "Do not go into pagan territory or enter a
Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of
Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: 'The kingdom of heaven
is at hand.' Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive
out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are
to give. Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts; no
sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking
stick. The laborer deserves his keep. Whatever town or village you
enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you
leave. As you enter a house, wish it peace. If the house is
worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return
to you. Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words - go
outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet.
Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of
Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that
town." [MT 10:5-15]
This is why I speak to them in parables, because
'they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or
understand.' Isaiah's prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says:
'You shall indeed hear but not understand you shall indeed look
but never see. Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly
hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see
with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their
heart and be converted, and I heal them.' [MT 13:13-15]
After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John
his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he
was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his
clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah
appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in
reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I
will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one
for Elijah." While he was still speaking, behold, a bright
cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice
that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well
pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they
fell prostrate and were very much afraid. [MT 17:1-6]
"If your brother sins (against you), go and
tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to
you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take
one or two others along with you, so that 'every fact may be
established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.' If he
refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to
listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile
or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth
shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be
loosed in heaven." [MT 18:15-18]
And when he was alone, those present along with
the Twelve questioned him about the parables. He answered them,
"The mystery of the kingdom of God has been granted to you.
But to those outside everything comes in parables, so that 'they
may look and see but not perceive, and hear and listen but not
understand, in order that they may not be converted and be
forgiven.'" [MK 4:10-12]
He summoned the Twelve and began to send them
out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He
instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking
stick - no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were,
however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them,
"Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from
there. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave
there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against
them." So they went off and preached repentance. [MK 6:7-12]
Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous
and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he
was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. [MK 6:20]

terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; then
from the cloud came a voice, "This is my beloved Son. Listen
to him." Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone
but Jesus alone with them. [MK 9:2-8]
Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the
feast of Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up
according to festival custom. After they had completed its days,
as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in
Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Thinking that he was
in the caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him among
their relatives and acquaintances, but not finding him, they
returned to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found
him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening
to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were
astounded at his understanding and his answers. [LK 2:41-47]
While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and
listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of
Gennesaret. [LK 5:1]
The report about him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.

"Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' but not
do what I command? I will show you what someone is like who comes
to me, listens to my words, and acts on them. That one is like a
person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on
rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but
could not shake it because it had been well built. But the one who
listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the
ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it
collapsed at once and was completely destroyed." [LK 6:46-49]
About eight days after he said this, he took
Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. While he
was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became
dazzling white. And behold, two men were conversing with him,
Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus
that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his
companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake,
they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As they were
about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is
good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one
for Moses, and one for Elijah." But he did not know what he
was saying. While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a
shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the
cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is
my chosen Son; listen to him." After the voice had spoken,
Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time
tell anyone what they had seen. [LK 9:28-36]
[Jesus said,] "Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever
rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who
sent me." [Taken from LK 10:16]
As they continued their journey he entered a
village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had
a sister named Mary (who) sat beside the Lord at his feet
listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came
to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has
left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me."
The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are
anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one
thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken
from her." [LK 10:38-42]
The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing
near to listen to him, but the Pharisees and scribes began to
complain, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with
them." So to them he addressed this parable. "What man
among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not
leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one
until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his
shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls
together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with
me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you, in just the
same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who
repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of
repentance." [LK 15:1-7]
"There was a rich man who dressed in purple
garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying
at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who
would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the
rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When
the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of
Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the
netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw
Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father
Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his
finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in
these flames.' Abraham replied, 'My child, remember that you
received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise
received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you
are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is
established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go
from our side to yours or from your side to ours.' He said, 'Then
I beg you, father, send him to my father's house, for I have five
brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this
place of torment.' But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the
prophets. Let them listen to them.' He said, 'Oh no, father
Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will
repent.' Then Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and
the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should
rise from the dead.'" [LK 16:19-31]
While they were listening to him speak, he
proceeded to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem and they
thought that the kingdom of God would appear there immediately. [LK
19:11]
During the day, Jesus was teaching in the temple area, but at night he would leave and stay at the place called the Mount of Olives.
And all the people would get up early each morning to listen to him in the temple area. [LK 21:37-38]
So they came to John and said to him,
"Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom
you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to
him." John answered and said, "No one can receive
anything except what has been given him from heaven. You
yourselves can testify that I said (that) I am not the Messiah,
but that I was sent before him. The one who has the bride is the
bridegroom; the best man, who stands and listens for him, rejoices
greatly at the bridegroom's voice. So this joy of mine has been
made complete. He must increase; I must decrease." [JN 3:26-30]
It is written in the prophets: 'They shall all
be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to my Father and learns
from him comes to me. [JN 6:45]
"Just as the living Father sent me and I
have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me
will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down
from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever
eats this bread will live forever." These things he said
while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. Then many of his
disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who
can accept it?" Since Jesus knew that his disciples were
murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you?
What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was
before?" [JN 6:57-62]
"Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God;
for this reason you do not listen, because you do not belong to
God." [JN 8:47]
So a second time they called the man who had
been blind and said to him, "Give God the praise! We know
that this man is a sinner." He replied, "If he is a
sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I was blind and
now I see." So they said to him, "What did he do to you?
How did he open your eyes?" He answered them, "I told
you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it
again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?" [JN 9:24-27]
"We know that God does not listen to sinners, but
if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him." [JN 9:31]
So Jesus said again, "Amen, amen, I say to
you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came (before me) are
thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am
the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come
in and go out and find pasture." [JN 10:7-9]
"I am the good shepherd, and I know mine
and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the
Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other
sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and
they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one
shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my
life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I
lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to
take it up again. This command I have received from my
Father." Again there was a division among the Jews because of
these words. Many of them said, "He is possessed and out of
his mind; why listen to him?" Others said, "These are
not the words of one possessed; surely a demon cannot open the
eyes of the blind, can he?" [JN 10:14-21]
So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a
king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king. For this I
was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the
truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my
voice." [JN 18:37]
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his
voice, and proclaimed to them, "You who are Jews, indeed all
of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen
to my words. These people are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is
only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken
through the prophet Joel: 'It will come to pass in the last days,'
God says, 'that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all
flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men
shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. Indeed, upon
my servants and my handmaids I will pour out a portion of my
spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy. And I will work
wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below: blood,
fire, and a cloud of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness,
and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and splendid
day of the Lord, and it shall be that everyone shall be saved who
calls on the name of the Lord.' You who are Israelites, hear these
words. Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God with
mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in
your midst, as you yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the
set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men
to crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the
throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by
it." [ACTS 2:14-24]
Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your
sins may be wiped away, and that the Lord may grant you times of
refreshment and send you the Messiah already appointed for you,
Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the times of universal
restoration of which God spoke through the mouth of his holy
prophets from of old. For Moses said: 'A prophet like me will the
Lord, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsmen; to
him you shall listen in all that he may say to you. Everyone who
does not listen to that prophet will be cut off from the people.'
[ACTS 3:19-23]
After an interval of about three hours, his wife
came in, unaware of what had happened. Peter said to her,
"Tell me, did you sell the land for this amount?" She
answered, "Yes, for that amount." Then Peter said to
her, "Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?
Listen, the footsteps of those who have buried your husband are at
the door, and they will carry you out." At once, she fell
down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men entered
they found her dead, so they carried her out and buried her beside
her husband. And great fear came upon the whole church and upon
all who heard of these things. [ACTS 5:7-11]
Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this
hour, three o'clock in the afternoon, I was at prayer in my house
when suddenly a man in dazzling robes stood before me and said,
'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your almsgiving
remembered before God. Send therefore to Joppa and summon Simon,
who is called Peter... So I sent for you immediately, and you were
kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence
of God to listen to all that you have been commanded by the
Lord.'" [Taken from ACTS 10:30-33]
While Peter was still speaking these things, the
Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the word. [ACTS
10:44]
At Lystra there was a crippled man, lame from
birth, who had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking, who
looked intently at him, saw that he had the faith to be healed,
and called out in a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your
feet." He jumped up and began to walk about. [ACTS 14:8-10]
The whole assembly fell silent, and they
listened while Paul and Barnabas described the signs and wonders
God had worked among the Gentiles through them. [ACTS 15:12]
One of them, a woman named Lydia, a dealer in
purple cloth, from the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God,
listened, and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what
Paul was saying. [ACTS 16:14]
About midnight, while Paul and Silas were
praying and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened, there
was suddenly such a severe earthquake that the foundations of the
jail shook; all the doors flew open, and the chains of all were
pulled loose. [ACTS 16:25-26]
"My brothers and fathers, listen to what I
am about to say to you in my defense." When they heard him
addressing them in Hebrew they became all the more quiet. And he
continued [Taken from ACTS 22:1-2]
"After I had returned to Jerusalem and
while I was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance and saw
the Lord saying to me, 'Hurry, leave Jerusalem at once, because
they will not accept your testimony about me.' But I replied,
'Lord, they themselves know that from synagogue to synagogue I
used to imprison and beat those who believed in you. And when the
blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I myself stood by
giving my approval and keeping guard over the cloaks of his
murderers.' Then he said to me, 'Go, I shall send you far away to
the Gentiles.'" They listened to him until he said this, but
then they raised their voices and shouted, "Take such a one
as this away from the earth. It is not right that he should
live." [ACTS 22:17-22]
Several days later Felix came with his wife
Drusilla, who was Jewish. He had Paul summoned and listened to him
speak about faith in Christ Jesus. But as he spoke about
righteousness and self-restraint and the coming judgment, Felix
became frightened and said, "You may go for now; when I find
an opportunity I shall summon you again." At the same time he
hoped that a bribe would be offered him by Paul, and so he sent
for him very often and conversed with him. [ACTS 24:24-26]
Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You may now
speak on your own behalf." So Paul stretched out his hand and
began his defense. "I count myself fortunate, King Agrippa,
that I am to defend myself before you today against all the
charges made against me by the Jews, especially since you are an
expert in all the Jewish customs and controversies. And therefore
I beg you to listen patiently." [ACTS 26:1-3]
Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You will soon
persuade me to play the Christian." Paul replied, "I
would pray to God that sooner or later not only you but all who
listen to me today might become as I am except for these
chains." [ACTS 26:28-29]
"Let it be known to you that this salvation of
God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen." [ACTS
28:28]
Pursue love, but strive eagerly for the
spiritual gifts, above all that you may prophesy. For one who
speaks in a tongue does not speak to human beings but to God, for
no one listens; he utters mysteries in spirit. On the other hand,
one who prophesies does speak to human beings, for their building
up, encouragement, and solace. [1COR 14:1-3]
Brothers, stop being childish in your thinking.
In respect to evil be like infants, but in your thinking be
mature. It is written in the law: "By people speaking strange
tongues and by the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people,
and even so they will not listen to me, says the Lord." [1COR
14:20-21]
Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do
you not listen to the law? [GAL 4:21]
If you will give these instructions to the
brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished
on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching you have
followed. Avoid profane and silly myths. Train yourself for
devotion, for, while physical training is of limited value,
devotion is valuable in every respect, since it holds a promise of
life both for the present and for the future. This saying is
trustworthy and deserves full acceptance. For this we toil and
struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is
the savior of all, especially of those who believe. Command and
teach these things. Let no one have contempt for your youth, but
set an example for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love,
faith, and purity. Until I arrive, attend to the reading,
exhortation, and teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which
was conferred on you through the prophetic word with the
imposition of hands of the presbyterate. Be diligent in these
matters, be absorbed in them, so that your progress may be evident
to everyone. Attend to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in
both tasks, for by doing so you will save both yourself and those
who listen to you. [1TM 4:6-16]
Remind people of these things and charge them
before God to stop disputing about words. This serves no useful
purpose since it harms those who listen. [2TM 2:14]
I charge you in the presence of God and of
Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his
appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent
whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand,
encourage through all patience and teaching. For the time will
come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following
their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate
teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted
to myths. But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up
with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your
ministry. [2TM 4:1-5]
Therefore, let us be on our guard while the promise of entering into his rest remains, that none of you seem to have failed. For in fact we have received the good news just as they did. But the word that they heard did not profit them, for they were not united in faith with those who listened.
[HEB 4:1-2]
Listen, my beloved brothers. Did not God choose
those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of
the kingdom that he promised to those who love him? [JMS 2:5]
You belong to God, children, and you have
conquered them, for the one who is in you is greater than the one
who is in the world. They belong to the world; accordingly, their
teaching belongs to the world, and the world listens to them. We
belong to God, and anyone who knows God listens to us, while
anyone who does not belong to God refuses to hear us. This is how
we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit. [1JN 4:4-6]
Blessed is the one who reads aloud and blessed
are those who listen to this prophetic message and heed what is
written in it, for the appointed time is near. [RV 1:3]
