Ember Days

"The Wednesday, Friday and Saturday following the first Sunday in Lent, Whitsunday (Pentecost), Holy Cross day (Sept. 14), and St. Lucy's day (Dec. 13), which are days of fasting for the special sanctification of the four seasons, and for obtaining God's blessing on the clergy, for whose ordination the Ember Saturdays are specially set apart." (Catholic Dictionary) Note that ember days are of very ancient origin (possibly dating back to apostolic times).

Note: It is customary to fast and observe partial / full abstinence on Ember Days (see below).

Fasting / Abstinence / Partial Abstinence

* Fridays - It is customary to abstain on all Fridays throughout the year (excepting holy days of obligation).

* Lent - It is customary to fast all days during Lent (from Ash Wednesday until after noon on Holy Saturday, normally excluding Sundays). Partial abstinence is traditionally observed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in Lent. Abstinence is observed on Fridays in Lent and on Ash Wednesday and Holy Saturday until noon.

* Ember Days - Fasting and partial abstinence are traditionally observed on Ember Days (except Ember Fridays, in which complete abstinence is traditionally observed).

* Rogation Days - It is customary to fast and abstain on Rogation days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday before the Ascension). [Note: For more on Rogation Days, try here for the MyCatholicSource.com 5/11 newsletter (plaintext version)]

* Vigil of Christmas - It is customary to fast and abstain on the vigil of Christmas (12/24, or anticipated on 12/23). [Note: If 12/24 falls on a Sunday, it may be transferred to the previous day.]

* Vigil of the Immaculate Conception - It is customary to fast and abstain on the vigil of the Immaculate Conception (12/7). [Note: If 12/7 falls on a Sunday, it may be transferred to the previous day.]

* Vigil of All Saints Day - Fasting and partial abstinence are traditionally observed on the vigil of All Saints Day, 10/31. [Note: If 10/31 falls on a Sunday, it may be transferred to the previous day.]

* Vigil of the Assumption - It is customary to fast and abstain on the vigil of the Assumption (8/14). [Note: If 8/14 falls on a Sunday, it may be transferred to the previous day.]

* Vigil of Pentecost - Fasting and partial abstinence are traditionally observed on the vigil of Pentecost.

Notes: While these traditional fasting / abstinence regulations may no longer be in force, Catholics may be urged to follow the traditional practices voluntarily. Note that fasting / abstinence may not be required of all persons (e.g. the old or young, those with certain health conditions, those in certain occupations, etc.). Fasting / abstinence regulations have varied over the years and by locations. Typically, fasting may refer to the reduction of meals to one full meal a day. Two other small meals may be taken, but these two together are not to equal a full meal. While liquids (e.g. water, juice) are permitted in between meals, snacking is not. All items subject to change. For current regulations regarding fasting / abstinence / partial abstinence, contact your parish or diocese. For medical information, contact a good doctor.

BIG Book of Latin Activities For Catholics

"Suitable For Children Or Adults!" ~ "Perfect For Home Schoolers!"

+ + +

As many faithful Catholics already know, the majestic Latin language – the 'official language' of the Catholic Church – promotes unity, helps safeguard the purity of doctrine, connects us with our Catholic ancestors, allows us to pray in "one voice", and even ties back to the inscription on the Cross which was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. The Latin language is still used today in the precious treasure that is the Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, in 'everyday speech' (much of English is derived from Latin), in mottos, in specialized fields, and in educational endeavors. It has been shown that the study of Latin brings many benefits. "And, Latin is truly the language of heaven!"

If you enjoy Latin, you may be glad to know that this full-sized (8.5" x 11"), tradition-minded publication features an assortment of activity types related to Latin (including: word searches, crosswords, coloring activities, challenges, fill-ins, spelling bee, quizzes, unscrambles, true/false, multiple choice, matching, cross-offs, circling, word associations, translation exercises, and more...), and treats of various topics (including: common Latin words, Latin language facts, Latin grammar, nouns & verbs, abbreviations, phrases / sayings / mottos, prefixes, cardinal numbers, grammatical gender, inflection, word roots, diacritics / accenting, pronunciation, Latin prayers / hymns, Scripture verses, Catholic phrases, and more...).
