Crafty persons everywhere try to mold Christianity
to suit their feelings. Some have set themselves up as "judge and jury"
of what is Christian - and anything that seems "harsh" to them is ruled
"unChristian". Maybe they are simply ignorant, maybe they have been
misinformed - but one thing is certain; they are severely misguided.
What follows is a response to some of their 'doctrines' based on Holy
Scripture - the holy word of God.
Note: All passages are from the New
Testament. Emphasis may be added below for clarity. For full

"Thou shalt be tolerant of all
persons and behaviors"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"admonish one another" (Col. 3:16, Rom. 15:14)
"hate what is evil" (Rom. 12:9)
"admonish them sharply" (Ti. 1:13)
"admonishing everyone" (Col. 1:28)
"If your brother sins, rebuke him" (Jesus
Christ, Lk. 17:3)
"And as for those who do not welcome you, when
you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against
them." (Jesus Christ, Lk. 9:5)
"After a first and second warning, break off
contact with a heretic, realizing that such a person is perverted and
sinful and stands self-condemned." (Ti. 3:10-11)
"We instruct you, brothers, in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ, to shun any brother who conducts himself in a
disorderly way and not according to the tradition they received from
us." (2 Thes. 3:6)
"If anyone does not obey our word as expressed
in this letter, take note of this person not to associate with him, that
he may be put to shame. Do not regard him as an enemy but admonish him
as a brother." (2 Thes. 3:14-15)
"Take no part in the fruitless works of
darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention the
things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light
becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light." (Eph.
5:11-14)
"But understand this: there will be terrifying
times in the last days. People will be self-centered and lovers of
money, proud, haughty, abusive, disobedient to their parents,
ungrateful, irreligious, callous, implacable, slanderous, licentious,
brutal, hating what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of
pleasure rather than lovers of God, as they make a pretense of religion
but deny its power. Reject them." (2 Tm. 3:1-5)
2.
"Thou shalt never offend
anyone"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"You brood of vipers!" (Mt. 3:7, Lk. 3:7)
"But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will
all perish as they did!" (Jesus Christ, Lk. 13:3, Lk. 13:5)
"I have much to say about you in condemnation."
(Jesus Christ, Jn. 8:26)
"Then Paul said to him, 'God will strike you,
you whitewashed wall.'" (Acts 23:3)
"If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be
accursed." (1 Cor. 16:22)
"You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you
flee from the judgment of Gehenna?" (Jesus Christ, Mt. 23:33)
"You brood of vipers, how can you say good
things when you are evil? For from the fullness of the heart the mouth
speaks." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 12:34)
"[Jesus] turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me,
Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but
as human beings do.'" (Mt. 16:23)
"Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and
said, 'It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but
since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life,
we now turn to the Gentiles.'" (Acts 13:46)
"Jesus answered, 'If I glorify myself, my glory
is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say,
'He is our God.' You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should
say that I do not know him, I would be like you a liar.'" (Jn. 8:54-55)
"O stupid Galatians! Who has bewitched you,
before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? I
want to learn only this from you: did you receive the Spirit from works
of the law, or from faith in what you heard? Are you so stupid?" (Gal.
3:1-3)
"[Jesus] made a whip out of cords and drove them all
out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins
of the money-changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold
doves he said, 'Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's
house a marketplace.'" (Jn. 2:15-16)
"For such people are false apostles, deceitful
workers, who masquerade as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even
Satan masquerades as an angel of light. So it is not strange that his
ministers also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. Their end will
correspond to their deeds." (2 Cor. 11:13-15)
"[Jesus] responded, 'Well did Isaiah prophesy about
you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors me with their
lips, but their hearts are far from me; In vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines human precepts.' You disregard God's commandment
but cling to human tradition.'" (Mk. 7:6-8)
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you
hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on
the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and every kind of
filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are
filled with hypocrisy and evildoing." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 23:27-28)
"You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in
heart and ears, you always oppose the Holy Spirit; you are just like
your ancestors. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute?
They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one,
whose betrayers and murderers you have now become. You received the law
as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it." (Acts 7:51-53)
"But Peter said to him, 'May your money perish
with you, because you thought that you could buy the gift of God with
money. You have no share or lot in this matter, for your heart is not
upright before God. Repent of this wickedness of yours and pray to the
Lord that, if possible, your intention may be forgiven. For I see that
you are filled with bitter gall and are in the bonds of iniquity." (Acts
8:20-23)
"But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the
Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, 'You son of the devil, you
enemy of all that is right, full of every sort of deceit and fraud. Will
you not stop twisting the straight paths of the Lord? Even now the hand
of the Lord is upon you. You will be blind, and unable to see the sun
for a time.' Immediately a dark mist fell upon him, and he went about
seeking people to lead him by the hand." (Acts 13:9-11)
"You belong to your father the devil and you
willingly carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the
beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and
the father of lies. But because I speak the truth, you do not believe
me. Can any of you charge me with sin? If I am telling the truth, why do
you not believe me? Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God; for
this reason you do not listen, because you do not belong to God." (Jesus
Christ, Jn.
8:44-47)
"Their penalty is what they deserve...we have
already brought the charge against Jews and Greeks alike that they are
all under the domination of sin, as it is written: 'There is no one
just, not one, there is no one who understands, there is no one who
seeks God. All have gone astray; all alike are worthless; there is not
one who does good, there is not even one. Their throats are open graves;
they deceive with their tongues; the venom of asps is on their lips;
their mouths are full of bitter cursing. Their feet are quick to shed
blood; ruin and misery are in their ways, and the way of peace they know
not. There is no fear of God before their eyes." (Rom. 3:8-18)
"For there are also many rebels, idle talkers
and deceivers, especially the Jewish Christians. It is imperative to
silence them, as they are upsetting whole families by teaching for
sordid gain what they should not. One of them, a prophet of their own,
once said, 'Cretans have always been liars, vicious beasts, and lazy
gluttons.' That testimony is true. Therefore, admonish them sharply, so
that they may be sound in the faith, instead of paying attention to
Jewish myths and regulations of people who have repudiated the truth. To
the clean all things are clean, but to those who are defiled and
unbelieving nothing is clean; in fact, both their minds and their
consciences are tainted. They claim to know God, but by their deeds they
deny him. They are vile and disobedient and unqualified for any good
deed." (Ti. 1:10-16)
"The Lord said to him, 'Oh you Pharisees!
Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are
filled with plunder and evil. You fools! Did not the maker of the
outside also make the inside? But as to what is within, give alms, and
behold, everything will be clean for you. Woe to you Pharisees! You pay
tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb, but you pay no
attention to judgment and to love for God. These you should have done,
without overlooking the others. Woe to you Pharisees! You love the seat
of honor in synagogues and greetings in marketplaces. Woe to you! You
are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk.' Then one of
the scholars of the law said to him in reply, 'Teacher, by saying this
you are insulting us too.' And he said, 'Woe also to you scholars of the
law! You impose on people burdens hard to carry, but you yourselves do
not lift one finger to touch them. Woe to you! You build the memorials
of the prophets whom your ancestors killed. Consequently, you bear
witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed
them and you do the building. Therefore, the wisdom of God said, 'I will
send to them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and
persecute' in order that this generation might be charged with the blood
of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the
blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and
the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged
with their blood! Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away
the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those
trying to enter.'" (Lk. 11:39-52)
3.
"Thou shalt never judge or
rebuke"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"If your brother sins, rebuke him" (Jesus
Christ, Lk. 17:3)
"admonish one another" (Col. 3:16, Rom. 15:14)
"admonish the idle" (1 Thes. 5:14)
"admonish them sharply" (Ti. 1:13)
"Reprimand publicly those who do sin, so that
the rest also will be afraid." (1 Tm. 5:20)
"If anyone does not obey our word as expressed
in this letter, take note of this person not to associate with him, that
he may be put to shame. Do not regard him as an enemy but admonish him
as a brother." (2 Thes. 3:14-15)
"I wrote you in my letter not to associate with
immoral people, not at all referring to the immoral of this world or the
greedy and robbers or idolaters; for you would then have to leave the
world. But I now write to you not to associate with anyone named a
brother, if he is immoral, greedy, an idolater, a slanderer, a drunkard,
or a robber, not even to eat with such a person. For why should I be
judging outsiders? Is it not your business to judge those within? God
will judge those outside. 'Purge the evil person from your midst.'" (1
Cor. 5:9-13)
4.
"Thou shalt live at peace with
all thy neighbors"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"In fact, all who want to live religiously in
Christ Jesus will be persecuted." (2 Tm. 3:12)
"In the world you will have trouble, but take
courage, I have conquered the world." (Jesus Christ, Jn. 16:33)
"Watch out, guard against the leaven of the
Pharisees and the leaven of Herod." (Jesus Christ, Mk. 8:15)
"If any one comes to me without hating his
father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his
own life, he cannot be my disciple." (Jesus Christ, Lk. 14:26)
"Brother will hand over brother to death, and
the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have
them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But the
one who perseveres to the end will be saved." (Jesus Christ, Mk. 13:12-13)
"Do not think that I have come to bring peace
upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have
come to set a man 'against his father, a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one's enemies will
be those of his household.'" (Jesus Christ, Mt. 10:34-36)
"If the world hates you, realize that it hated
me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own;
but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of
the world, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you, 'No
slave is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also
persecute you." (Jesus Christ, Jn. 15:18-20)
"Do you think that I have come to establish
peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a
household of five will be divided, three against two and two against
three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his
father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother,
a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law
against her mother-in-law." (Jesus Christ, Lk. 12:51-53)
"Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom
against kingdom; there will be famines and earthquakes from place to
place. All these are the beginning of the labor pains. Then they will
hand you over to persecution, and they will kill you. You will be hated
by all nations because of my name. And then many will be led into sin;
they will betray and hate one another. Many false prophets will arise
and deceive many; and because of the increase of evildoing, the love of
many will grow cold. But the one who perseveres to the end will be
saved." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 24:7-13)
"Brother will hand over brother to death, and
the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have
them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but
whoever endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one
town, flee to another. Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns
of Israel before the Son of Man comes. No disciple is above his teacher,
no slave above his master. It is enough for the disciple that he become
like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master. If they
have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of
his household!" (Jesus Christ, Mt. 10:21-25)
5.
"Thou shalt not fear to dialog
with and associate with those who are
different; they are acceptable in their 'own way', even if they fail to
believe in Christ or reject His Church"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"whoever does not believe will be condemned."
(Jesus Christ, Mk. 16:16)
"whoever does not believe has already been
condemned" (Jesus Christ, Jn. 3:18)
"Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever
rejects me rejects the one who sent me." (Jesus Christ, Lk. 10:16)
"Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever
does not possess the Son of God does not have life." (1 Jn. 5:12)
"Do not be led astray: 'Bad company corrupts
good morals.'" (1 Cor. 15:33)
"Now as for those enemies of mine who did not
want me as their king, bring them here and slay them before me."
[Jesus Christ (speaking in parables), Lk. 19:27]
"After a first and second warning, break off
contact with a heretic, realizing that such a person is perverted and
sinful and stands self-condemned." (Ti. 3:10-11)
"Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the
flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within
you." (Jesus Christ, Jn. 6:53)
"But without faith it is impossible to please
him, for anyone who approaches God must believe that he exists and that
he rewards those who seek him." (Heb. 11:6)
"Therefore, whoever resists authority opposes
what God has appointed, and those who oppose it will bring judgment upon
themselves." (Rom. 13:2)
"There is no salvation through anyone else, nor
is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we
are to be saved." (Acts 4:12)
"Let no one deceive you with empty arguments,
for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the
disobedient. So do not be associated with them." (Eph. 5:6-7)
"If he refuses to listen to them, tell the
church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as
you would a Gentile or a tax collector." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 18:17)
"Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and
said, 'It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but
since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life,
we now turn to the Gentiles.'" (Acts 13:46)
"I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those
who create dissensions and obstacles, in opposition to the teaching that
you learned; avoid them. For such people do not serve our Lord Christ
but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering speech they deceive
the hearts of the innocent." (Rom. 16:17-18)
"When Silas and Timothy came down from
Macedonia, Paul began to occupy himself totally with preaching the word,
testifying to the Jews that the Messiah was Jesus. When they opposed him
and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, 'our blood
be on your heads! I am clear of responsibility. From now on I will go to
the Gentiles.'" (Acts 18:5-6)
"As you enter a house, wish it peace. If the
house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace
return to you. Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words - go
outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet. Amen, I
say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah
on the day of judgment than for that town." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 10:12-15)
"Many deceivers have gone out into the world,
those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh; such
is the deceitful one and the antichrist. Look to yourselves that you do
not lose what we worked for but may receive a full recompense. Anyone
who is so 'progressive' as not to remain in the teaching of the Christ
does not have God; whoever remains in the teaching has the Father and
the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not
receive him in your house or even greet him; for whoever greets him
shares in his evil works." (2 Jn. 1:7-11)
"I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking
the one who called you by the grace of Christ for a different gospel
(not that there is another). But there are some who are disturbing you
and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel
from heaven should preach (to you) a gospel other than the one that we
preached to you, let that one be accursed! As we have said before, and
now I say again, if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than the one
that you received, let that one be accursed! Am I now currying favor
with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were
still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ." (Gal.
1:6-10)
"Do not be yoked with those who are different,
with unbelievers. For what partnership do righteousness and lawlessness
have? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? What accord has
Christ with Beliar? Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?
What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple
of the living God; as God said: 'I will live with them and move among
them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people. Therefore,
come forth from them and be separate,' says the Lord, 'and touch nothing
unclean; then I will receive you and I will be a father to you, and you
shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.'" (2 Cor.
6:14-18)
6.
"Thou shalt always use kind
words, pastoral language & actions - never harsh words or actions"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"You brood of vipers!" (Mt. 3:7, Lk. 3:7)
"I have much to say about you in condemnation."
(Jesus Christ, Jn. 8:26)
"You hypocrites!" (Jesus Christ, Lk. 12:56, and also: Mt.
22:18, Mt. 23:13, Mt. 23:15, Mt. 23:23, Mt. 23:25, Mt. 23:27, Mt. 23:29,
Mk. 7:6)
"You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you
flee from the judgment of Gehenna?" (Jesus Christ, Mt. 23:33)
"you then, who are wicked" (Jesus
Christ, Mt. 7:11, Lk.
11:13)
"Whoever sins belongs to the devil" (1 Jn. 3:8)
"Jesus answered them, 'Did I not choose you
twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?'" (Jn. 6:70)
"Would that those who are upsetting you might
also castrate themselves!" (Gal. 5:12)
"If you are without discipline, in which all
have shared, you are not sons but bastards." (Heb. 12:8)
"Jesus said in reply, 'O faithless and perverse
generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you?'"
(Mt. 17:17, and also: Mk. 9:19, Lk. 9:41)
"[Jesus] turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me,
Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but
as human beings do.'" (Mt. 16:23)
"The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written
of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would
be better for that man if he had never been born." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 26:24, and also
Mk. 14:21)
"Anyone who does not remain in me will be
thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw
them into a fire and they will be burned." (Jesus Christ, Jn. 15:6)
"Finally, brothers, pray for us, so that the
word of the Lord may speed forward and be glorified, as it did among
you, and that we may be delivered from perverse and wicked people, for
not all have faith." (2 Thes. 3:1-2)
"Jesus answered, 'If I glorify myself, my glory
is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say,
'He is our God.' You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should
say that I do not know him, I would be like you a liar.'" (Jn. 8:54-55)
"For such people are false apostles, deceitful
workers, who masquerade as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even
Satan masquerades as an angel of light. So it is not strange that his
ministers also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. Their end will
correspond to their deeds." (2 Cor. 11:13-15)
Christ, Jn.
8:44-47)
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who
believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great
millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the
sea. Woe to the world because of things that cause sin! Such things must
come, but woe to the one through whom they come! If your hand or foot
causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to
enter into life maimed or crippled than with two hands or two feet to be
thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out
and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye
than with two eyes to be thrown into fiery Gehenna." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 18:6-9)
"But Peter said, 'Ananias, why has Satan filled
your heart so that you lied to the Holy Spirit and retained part of the
price of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain yours?
And when it was sold, was it not still under your control? Why did you
contrive this deed? You have lied not to human beings, but to God.' When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last, and great
fear came upon all who heard of it. The young men came and wrapped him
up, then carried him out and buried him. After an interval of about
three hours, his wife came in, unaware of what had happened. Peter said
to her, 'Tell me, did you sell the land for this amount?' She answered,
'Yes, for that amount.' Then Peter said to her, 'Why did you agree to
test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen, the footsteps of those who have
buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.' At
once, she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young
men entered they found her dead, so they carried her out and buried her
beside her husband. And great fear came upon the whole church and upon
all who heard of these things." (Acts 5:3-11)
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you
hypocrites. You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do
not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to
enter. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You traverse
sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a
child of Gehenna twice as much as yourselves...Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You pay tithes of
mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier things of the
law: judgment and mercy and fidelity. (But) these you should have done,
without neglecting the others. Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and
swallow the camel! Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of
plunder and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of
the cup, so that the outside also may be clean. Woe to you, scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear
beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and
every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but
inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing. Woe to you, scribes
and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and
adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, 'If we had lived in
the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the
prophets' blood.' Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are
the children of those who murdered the prophets; now fill up what your
ancestors measured out! You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you
flee from the judgment of Gehenna?" (Jesus Christ, Mt. 23:13-15,
23-33)

"Thou shalt not condemn
homosexuality, divorce, or fornication - live and let live"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"If your brother sins, rebuke him" (Jesus
Christ, Lk. 17:3)
"I say to you, whoever divorces his wife
(unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery."
(Jesus Christ, Mt. 19:9)
"Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or
greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom
of Christ and of God." (Eph. 5:5)
"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and
marries another, she commits adultery." (Jesus Christ, Mk. 10:11-12)
"Everyone who divorces his wife and marries
another commits adultery, and the one who marries a woman divorced from
her husband commits adultery." (Jesus Christ, Lk. 16:18)
"But as for cowards, the unfaithful, the
depraved, murderers, the unchaste, sorcerers, idol-worshipers, and
deceivers of every sort, their lot is in the burning pool of fire and
sulfur, which is the second death." (Rv. 21:8)
"Likewise, Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding
towns, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual promiscuity
and practiced unnatural vice, serve as an example by undergoing a
punishment of eternal fire." (Jude 1:7)
"It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife
must give her a bill of divorce.' But I say to you, whoever divorces his
wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery,
and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." (Jesus
Christ, Mt. 5:31-32)
"Do you not know that the unjust will not
inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor
idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor practicing homosexuals
nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor robbers will
inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Cor. 6:9-10)
"Now the works of the flesh are obvious:
immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds,
rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions,
factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I
warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not
inherit the kingdom of God." (Gal. 5:19-21)
"Are you unaware, brothers (for I am speaking
to people who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over one as
long as one lives? Thus a married woman is bound by law to her living
husband; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law in
respect to her husband. Consequently, while her husband is alive she
will be called an adulteress if she consorts with another man." (Rom.
7:1-3)
"We know that the law is good, provided that
one uses it as law, with the understanding that law is meant not for a
righteous person but for the lawless and unruly, the godless and sinful,
the unholy and profane, those who kill their fathers or mothers,
murderers, the unchaste, practicing homosexuals, kidnapers, liars,
perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to sound teaching, according to
the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been
entrusted." (1 Tm. 1:8-11)
"The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from
heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the
truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is evident to
them, because God made it evident to them. Ever since the creation of
the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have
been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. As a
result, they have no excuse; for although they knew God they did not
accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in
their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened. While claiming
to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal
God for the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of
four-legged animals or of snakes. Therefore, God handed them over to
impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual degradation of
their bodies. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and
worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever.
Amen. Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their
females exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the males
likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for
one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in
their own persons the due penalty for their perversity. And since they
did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their
undiscerning mind to do what is improper. They are filled with every
form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder,
rivalry, treachery, and spite. They are gossips and scandalmongers and
they hate God. They are insolent, haughty, boastful, ingenious in their
wickedness, and rebellious toward their parents. They are senseless,
faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know the just decree of
God that all who practice such things deserve death, they not only do
them but give approval to those who practice them." (Rom 1:18-32)
8.
"Thou shalt update with the
times"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"We instruct you, brothers, in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ, to shun any brother who conducts himself in a
disorderly way and not according to the tradition they received from
us." (2 Thes. 3:6)
"Let what you heard from the beginning remain
in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you
will remain in the Son and in the Father." (1 Jn. 2:24)
"Remember your leaders who spoke the word of
God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their
faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do not be
carried away by all kinds of strange teaching." (Heb. 13:7-9)
"Whoever teaches something different and does
not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the
religious teaching is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid
disposition for arguments and verbal disputes." (1 Tm. 6:3-4)
"O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to
you. Avoid profane babbling and the absurdities of so-called knowledge.
By professing it, some people have deviated from the faith. Grace be
with all of you." (1 Tm. 6:20-21)
"I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies
of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to
God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but
be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is
the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect." (Rom. 12:1-2)
"There were also false prophets among the
people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will
introduce destructive heresies and even deny the Master who ransomed
them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their
licentious ways, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled.
In their greed they will exploit you with fabrications, but from of old
their condemnation has not been idle and their destruction does not
sleep." (2 Pt. 2:1-3)
"I charge you in the presence of God and of
Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his
appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether
it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through
all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not
tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable
curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth
and will be diverted to myths. But you, be self-possessed in all
circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist;
fulfill your ministry." (2 Tm. 4:1-15)
9.
"Thou shalt not believe in
eternal corporal punishment since God is loving"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will
clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the
chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." (Mt 3:12, and also Lk. 3:17)
"Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees.
Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and
thrown into the fire." (Mt. 3:10, and also: Lk. 3:9, Mt. 7:19)
"Anyone who does not remain in me will be
thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw
them into a fire and they will be burned." (Jesus Christ, Jn. 15:6)
"I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of
the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I
tell you, be afraid of that one." (Jesus Christ, Lk. 12:5)
"It is better for you to lose one of your
members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna." (Jesus
Christ, Mt. 5:29,
and also Mt. 5:30)
"It is better for you to enter into life maimed
or crippled than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into eternal
fire." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 18:8)
"It is better for you to enter into life with
one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into fiery Gehenna." (Jesus
Christ, Mt. 18:9)
"The Son of Man will send his angels, and they
will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all
evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will
be wailing and grinding of teeth." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 13:41-42)
"Thus it will be at the end of the age. The
angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw
them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of
teeth." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 13:49-50)
"But as for cowards, the unfaithful, the
depraved, murderers, the unchaste, sorcerers, idol-worshipers, and
deceivers of every sort, their lot is in the burning pool of fire and
sulfur, which is the second death." (Rv. 21:8)
"Likewise, Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding
towns, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual promiscuity
and practiced unnatural vice, serve as an example by undergoing a
punishment of eternal fire." (Jude 1:7)
"For it is surely just on God's part to repay
with afflictions those who are afflicting you, and to grant rest along
with us to you who are undergoing afflictions, at the revelation of the
Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels, in blazing fire,
inflicting punishment on those who do not acknowledge God and on those
who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty
of eternal ruin, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the
glory of his power" (2 Thes. 1:6-9)
"A third angel followed them and said in a loud
voice, 'Anyone who worships the beast or its image, or accepts its mark
on forehead or hand, will also drink the wine of God's fury, poured full
strength into the cup of his wrath, and will be tormented in burning
sulfur before the holy angels and before the Lamb. The smoke of the fire
that torments them will rise forever and ever, and there will be no
relief day or night for those who worship the beast or its image or
accept the mark of its name.'" (Rv. 14:9-11)
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who
believe (in me) to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone
were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. If your hand
causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life
maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable
fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for
you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into
Gehenna. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. Better for you
to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be
thrown into Gehenna, where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not
quenched.'" (Jesus Christ, Mk. 9:42-48)
"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart
from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and
his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and
you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and
you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for
me.' Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or
thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to
your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not
do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And these will
go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." (Jesus
Christ, Mt.
25:41-46)
"Next I saw a large white throne and the one
who was sitting on it. The earth and the sky fled from his presence and
there was no place for them. I saw the dead, the great and the lowly,
standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. Then another scroll
was opened, the book of life. The dead were judged according to their
deeds, by what was written in the scrolls. The sea gave up its dead;
then Death and Hades gave up their dead. All the dead were judged
according to their deeds. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the pool
of fire. (This pool of fire is the second death.) Anyone whose name was
not found written in the book of life was thrown into the pool of fire."
(Rv. 20:11-15)
"When the poor man died, he was carried away by
angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried,
and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes
and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out,
'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his
finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these
flames.' Abraham replied, 'My child, remember that you received what was
good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;
but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover,
between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from
crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side
to ours.' He said, 'Then I beg you, father, send him to my father's
house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too
come to this place of torment.' But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses
and the prophets. Let them listen to them.' He said, 'Oh no, father
Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
Then Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'" (Jesus
Christ, Lk.
16:22-31)
10.
"Thou shalt be certain of thy
salvation - do not fear; most persons will be saved"
SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE:
"Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for
many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough."
(Jesus Christ, Lk. 13:24)
"Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil
is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
(1 Pt. 5:8)
"Watch and pray that you may not undergo the
test." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 26:41, Mk. 14:38)
"For just as a body without a spirit is dead,
so also faith without works is dead." (Jms. 2:26)
"everyone of you who does not renounce all his
possessions cannot be my disciple." (Jesus Christ, Lk. 14:33)
"I tell you, unless your righteousness
surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the
kingdom of heaven." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 5:20)
"Anyone who does not remain in me will be
thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw
them into a fire and they will be burned." (Jesus Christ, Jn. 15:6)
"So then, my beloved, obedient as you have
always been, not only when I am present but all the more now when I am
absent, work out your salvation with fear and trembling." (Phil. 2:12)
"You need endurance to do the will of God and
receive what he has promised. 'For, after just a brief moment, he who is
to come shall come; he shall not delay. But my just one shall live by
faith, and if he draws back I take no pleasure in him.'" (Heb. 10:36-38)
"For we must all appear before the judgment
seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to
what he did in the body, whether good or evil. Therefore, since we know
the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade others" (2 Cor. 5:10-11)
"And everyone who listens to these words of
mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on
sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted
the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined." (Jesus
Christ, Mt. 7:26-27)
"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is
wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter
through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that
leads to life. And those who find it are few." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 7:13-15)
"If anyone thinks he is religious and does not
bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, his religion is vain. Religion
that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care
for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained
by the world." (Jms. 1:26-27)
"Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy
from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that
day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault
everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant at all times
and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are
imminent and to stand before the Son of Man." (Jesus Christ, Lk. 21:34-36)
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,'
will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of
my Father in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did
we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name?
Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?' Then I will declare to them
solemnly, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.'" (Jesus
Christ, Mt.
7:21-23)
"They were broken off because of unbelief, but
you are there because of faith. So do not become haughty, but stand in
awe. For if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps he will not
spare you either. See, then, the kindness and severity of God: severity
toward those who fell, but God's kindness to you, provided you remain in
his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off." (Rom. 11:20-22)
"Do you not know that the runners in the
stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to
win. Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win
a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one. Thus I do not run
aimlessly; I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. No, I drive my body
and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself
should be disqualified." (1 Cor. 9:24-27)
"He said to the crowds who came out to be
baptized by him, 'You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the
coming wrath? Produce good fruits as evidence of your repentance; and do
not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father,' for I
tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Even
now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does
not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.'" (Lk.
3:7-9)
"After the master of the house has arisen and
locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, 'Lord,
open the door for us.' He will say to you in reply, 'I do not know where
you are from.' And you will say, 'We ate and drank in your company and
you taught in our streets.' Then he will say to you, 'I do not know
where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!' And there will
be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out."
(Jesus Christ, Lk. 13:25-28)
"For it is impossible in the case of those who
have once been enlightened and tasted the heavenly gift and shared in
the Holy Spirit and tasted the good word of God and the powers of the
age to come, and then have fallen away, to bring them to repentance
again, since they are recrucifying the Son of God for themselves and
holding him up to contempt. Ground that has absorbed the rain falling
upon it repeatedly and brings forth crops useful to those for whom it is
cultivated receives a blessing from God. But if it produces thorns and
thistles, it is rejected; it will soon be cursed and finally burned."
(Heb. 6:4-8)
"The king was enraged and sent his troops,
destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his
servants, 'The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not
worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the
feast whomever you find.' The servants went out into the streets and
gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled
with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man
there not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, 'My friend, how
is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?' But he was
reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, 'Bind his
hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will
be wailing and grinding of teeth.' Many are invited, but few are
chosen." (Jesus Christ, Mt. 22:7-14)
"I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,
that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the
sea, and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the
sea. All ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual
drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the
rock was the Christ. Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they
were struck down in the desert. These things happened as examples for
us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did. And do not
become idolaters, as some of them did, as it is written, 'The people sat
down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel.' Let us not indulge in
immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell within a
single day. Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and suffered
death by serpents. Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered
death by the destroyer. These things happened to them as an example, and
they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the
ages has come. Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should
take care not to fall." (1 Cor. 10:1-12)
"For those times will have tribulation such as
has not been since the beginning of God's creation until now, nor ever
will be. If the Lord had not shortened those days, no one would be
saved; but for the sake of the elect whom he chose, he did shorten the
days. If anyone says to you then, 'Look, here is the Messiah! Look,
there he is!' do not believe it. False messiahs and false prophets will
arise and will perform signs and wonders in order to mislead, if that
were possible, the elect. Be watchful! I have told it all to you
beforehand. But in those days after that tribulation the sun will be
darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be
falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And
then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in the clouds' with great
power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his
elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the
sky... But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in
heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do
not know when the time will come. It is like a man traveling abroad. He
leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his work, and
orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch. Watch, therefore; you do not
know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at
midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly
and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: 'Watch!'" (Jesus
Christ, Mk.
13:19-27, 32-37)
