Love in the N.T. / Scripture Verses:
Taken
from... |
Scripture |
MK 3:28-29 |
"Amen, I say to you, all
sins and all blasphemies that people utter will be forgiven them. But
whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have
forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin." |
MK 4:1-20 |
On another occasion he
began to teach by the sea. A very large crowd gathered around him
so that he got into a boat on the sea and sat down. And the whole
crowd was beside the sea on land. And he taught them at length in
parables, and in the course of his instruction he said to them,
"Hear this! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some
seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Other
seed fell on rocky ground where it had little soil. It sprang up
at once because the soil was not deep. And when the sun rose, it
was scorched and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell
among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it and it produced
no grain. And some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit. It
came up and grew and yielded thirty, sixty, and a
hundredfold." He added, "Whoever has ears to hear ought
to hear." And when he was alone, those present along with
the Twelve questioned him about the parables. He answered them,
"The mystery of the kingdom of God has been granted to you.
But to those outside everything comes in parables, so that 'they
may look and see but not perceive, and hear and listen but not
understand, in order that they may not be converted and be
forgiven.'" Jesus said to them, "Do you not
understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of the
parables? The sower sows the word. These are the ones on the
path where the word is sown. As soon as they hear, Satan comes at
once and takes away the word sown in them. And these are the ones
sown on rocky ground who, when they hear the word, receive it at
once with joy. But they have no root; they last only for a time.
Then when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word,
they quickly fall away. Those sown among thorns are another sort.
They are the people who hear the word, but worldly anxiety, the
lure of riches, and the craving for other things intrude and choke
the word, and it bears no fruit. But those sown on rich soil
are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit thirty
and sixty and a hundredfold." |
MK 4:21-23 |
He said to them,
"Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or
under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is
nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except
to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to
hear." |
MK 4:24-25 |
He also told them,
"Take care what you hear. The measure with which you
measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given
to you. To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who
has not, even what he has will be taken away." |
MK 4:35-41 |
On that day, as evening
drew on, he said to them, "Let us cross to the other
side." Leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat
just as he was. And other boats were with him. A violent squall
came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was
already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion.
They woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that
we are perishing?" He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to
the sea, "Quiet! Be still!" The wind ceased and there
was great calm. Then he asked them, "Why are you
terrified? Do you not yet have faith?" They were filled
with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this
whom even wind and sea obey?" |
MK 6:7-11 |
He summoned the Twelve
and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over
unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the
journey but a walking stick - no food, no sack, no money in their
belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic.
He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there
until you leave from there. Whatever place does not welcome you
or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in
testimony against them." |
MK 7:1-23 |
Now when the Pharisees
with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him,
they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with
unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. (For the Pharisees and, in
fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands,
keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the
marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And
there are many other things that they have traditionally observed,
the purification of cups and jugs and kettles (and beds).) So the
Pharisees and scribes questioned him, "Why do your disciples
not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with
unclean hands?" He responded, "Well did Isaiah
prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people
honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; In
vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.'
You disregard God's commandment but cling to human
tradition." He went on to say, "How well you have
set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your
tradition! For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,'
and 'Whoever curses father or mother shall die.' Yet you say, 'If
a person says to father or mother, "Any support you might
have had from me is qorban"' (meaning, dedicated to God), you
allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. You
nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have
handed on. And you do many such things." He summoned the
crowd again and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and
understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that
person; but the things that come out from within are
what defile." When he got home away from the crowd his
disciples questioned him about the parable. He said to them,
"Are even you likewise without understanding? Do you not
realize that everything that goes into a person from outside
cannot defile, since it enters not the heart but the stomach and
passes out into the latrine?"... "But what comes out
of a person, that is what defiles. From within people, from their
hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery,
greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance,
folly. All these evils come from within and they defile." |
MK 8:11-13 |
The Pharisees came
forward and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from
heaven to test him. He sighed from the depth of his spirit and
said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to
you, no sign will be given to this generation." Then he
left them, got into the boat again, and went off to the other
shore. |
MK 8:14-21 |
They had forgotten to
bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. He
enjoined them, "Watch out, guard against the leaven of the
Pharisees and the leaven of Herod." They concluded among
themselves that it was because they had no bread. When he became
aware of this he said to them, "Why do you conclude that it
is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or
comprehend? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes and not
see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember, when I broke
the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets
full of fragments you picked up?" They answered him,
"Twelve." "When I broke the seven loaves for the
four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick
up?" They answered (him), "Seven." He said to them,
"Do you still not understand?" |
MK 8:31-38 |
And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many
things and be rejected by the ancients and by the high priests and
the scribes: and be killed and after three days rise again. And he
spoke the word openly. And Peter taking him began to rebuke
him. Who turning about and seeing his disciples, threatened Peter,
saying: Go behind me, Satan, because thou savourest not the things
that are of God but that are of men. And calling the multitude
together with his disciples, [Jesus] said to them: If any man
will follow me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and
follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and
whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel shall
save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole
world and suffer the loss of his soul? Or what shall a man give in
exchange for his soul: For he that shall be ashamed of me and of
my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation: the Son of man
also will be ashamed of him, when he shall come in the glory of
his Father with the holy angels. |
MK 9:14-29 |
When they came to the
disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing
with them. Immediately on seeing him, the whole crowd was utterly
amazed. They ran up to him and greeted him. He asked them,
"What are you arguing about with them?" Someone from the
crowd answered him, "Teacher, I have brought to you my son
possessed by a mute spirit. Wherever it seizes him, it throws him
down; he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid.
I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do
so." He said to them in reply, "O faithless
generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure
you? Bring him to me." They brought the boy to him. And
when he saw him, the spirit immediately threw the boy into
convulsions. As he fell to the ground, he began to roll around and
foam at the mouth. Then he questioned his father, "How long
has this been happening to him?" He replied, "Since
childhood. It has often thrown him into fire and into water to
kill him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and
help us." Jesus said to him, "'If you can!' Everything
is possible to one who has faith." Then the boy's father
cried out, "I do believe, help my unbelief!" Jesus, on
seeing a crowd rapidly gathering, rebuked the unclean spirit and
said to it, "Mute and deaf spirit, I command you: come out of
him and never enter him again!" Shouting and throwing the boy
into convulsions, it came out. He became like a corpse, which
caused many to say, "He is dead!" But Jesus took him by
the hand, raised him, and he stood up. When he entered the house,
his disciples asked him in private, "Why could we not drive
it out?" He said to them, "This kind can only come out
through prayer." |
MK 9:33-37 |
They came to Capernaum
and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, "What were
you arguing about on the way?" But they remained silent. They
had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the
greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, "If
anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the
servant of all." Taking a child he placed it in their
midst, and putting his arms around it he said to them,
"Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives
me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the one who sent
me." |
MK 9:42-48
Reminder:
Interpretation and application of Scripture should not be contrary
to the perennial, official teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.
Do not take Scripture passages out of context. Do not inflict harm
on yourself or others, break laws, take unsuitable / incautious
or inappropriate / drastic actions, or take figurative items
literally. |
"Whoever causes
one of these little ones who believe (in me) to sin, it would be
better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and
he were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to sin, cut
it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with
two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. And if
your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to
enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into
Gehenna. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. Better
for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than with
two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, where 'their worm does not
die, and the fire is not quenched.'" |
MK 9:49-50 |
"Everyone will
be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if salt becomes insipid,
with what will you restore its flavor? Keep salt in yourselves
and you will have peace with one another." |
MK 10:1-12 |
He set out from there
and went into the district of Judea (and) across the Jordan. Again
crowds gathered around him and, as was his custom, he again taught
them. The Pharisees approached and asked, "Is it lawful for a
husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said
to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They
replied, "Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and
dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the
hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from
the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female. For
this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined
to his wife), and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no
longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined
together, no human being must separate." In the house the
disciples again questioned him about this. He said to them, "Whoever
divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against
her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she
commits adultery." |
MK 10:13-16 |
And people were bringing
children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples
rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to
them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for
the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to
you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will
not enter it." Then he embraced them and blessed them,
placing his hands on them. |
MK 10:17-31 |
As he was setting out on
a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him,
"Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good
but God alone. You know the commandments: 'You shall not kill; you
shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear
false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your
mother.'" He replied and said to him, "Teacher, all of
these I have observed from my youth." Jesus, looking at him,
loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing.
Go, sell what you have, and give to (the) poor and you will have
treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." At that
statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many
possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,
"How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the
kingdom of God!" The disciples were amazed at his words. So
Jesus again said to them in reply, "Children, how hard it is
to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass
through (the) eye of (a) needle than for one who is rich to enter
the kingdom of God." They were exceedingly astonished and
said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus
looked at them and said, "For human beings it is impossible,
but not for God. All things are possible for God." Peter
began to say to him, "We have given up everything and
followed you." Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, there is
no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or
father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the
gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this
present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and
children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age
to come. But many that are first will be last, and (the) last
will be first." |
MK 10:42-45 |
Jesus summoned them and
said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as
rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones
make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among
you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your
servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of
all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many." |
MK 11:12-14, 20-25 |
The next day as they
were leaving Bethany he was hungry. Seeing from a distance a fig
tree in leaf, he went over to see if he could find anything on it.
When he reached it he found nothing but leaves; it was not the
time for figs. And he said to it in reply, "May no one ever
eat of your fruit again!" And his disciples heard it... Early
in the morning, as they were walking along, they saw the fig tree
withered to its roots. Peter remembered and said to him,
"Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has
withered." Jesus said to them in reply, "Have faith in
God. Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be lifted
up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but
believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him.
Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that
you will receive it and it shall be yours. When you stand to
pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that
your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your
transgressions." |
MK 11:15-17 |
They came to
Jerusalem, and on entering the temple area he began to drive out
those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the
money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. He
did not permit anyone to carry anything through the temple area.
Then he taught them saying, "Is it not written: 'My house
shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples'? But you have
made it a den of thieves." |
MK 12:1-12 |
He began to speak to
them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge
around it, dug a wine press, and built a tower. Then he leased it
to tenant farmers and left on a journey. At the proper time he
sent a servant to the tenants to obtain from them some of the
produce of the vineyard. But they seized him, beat him, and sent
him away empty-handed. Again he sent them another servant. And
that one they beat over the head and treated shamefully. He sent
yet another whom they killed. So, too, many others; some they
beat, others they killed. He had one other to send, a beloved son.
He sent him to them last of all, thinking, 'They will respect my
son.' But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' So they
seized him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. What
(then) will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come, put the
tenants to death, and give the vineyard to others. Have you
not read this scripture passage: 'The stone that the builders
rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been
done, and it is wonderful in our eyes'?" They were seeking to
arrest him, but they feared the crowd, for they realized that he
had addressed the parable to them. So they left him and went away. |
MK 12:38-40 |
In the course of his
teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go
around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces,
seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets.
They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy
prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation." |
MK 13:1-37 |
As he was making his way
out of the temple area one of his disciples said to him,
"Look, teacher, what stones and what buildings!" Jesus
said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? There will
not be one stone left upon another that will not be thrown
down." As he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite
the temple area, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him
privately, "Tell us, when will this happen, and what sign
will there be when all these things are about to come to an
end?" Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one
deceives you. Many will come in my name saying, 'I am he,' and
they will deceive many. When you hear of wars and reports of wars
do not be alarmed; such things must happen, but it will not yet be
the end. Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against
kingdom. There will be earthquakes from place to place and there
will be famines. These are the beginnings of the labor pains. Watch out for yourselves. They will hand you over to the
courts. You will be beaten in synagogues. You will be arraigned
before governors and kings because of me, as a witness before
them. But the gospel must first be preached to all nations.
When they lead you away and hand you over, do not worry beforehand
about what you are to say. But say whatever will be given to you
at that hour. For it will not be you who are speaking but the Holy Spirit. Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father
his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put
to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But the one
who perseveres to the end will be saved. When you see
the desolating abomination standing where he should not (let the
reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the
mountains, (and) a person on a housetop must not go down or enter
to get anything out of his house, and a person in a field must not
return to get his cloak. Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers
in those days. Pray that this does not happen in winter. For those
times will have tribulation such as has not been since the
beginning of God's creation until now, nor ever will be. If the
Lord had not shortened those days, no one would be saved; but for
the sake of the elect whom he chose, he did shorten the days.
If anyone says to you then, 'Look, here is the Messiah! Look,
there he is!' do not believe it. False messiahs and false
prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders in order to
mislead, if that were possible, the elect. Be watchful! I have
told it all to you beforehand. But in those days after that
tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give
its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the
powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see 'the
Son of Man coming in the clouds' with great power and glory, and
then he will send out the angels and gather (his) elect from the
four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes
tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. In the
same way, when you see these things happening, know that he is
near, at the gates. Amen, I say to you, this generation will not
pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and
earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But
of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven,
nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do
not know when the time will come. It is like a man traveling
abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each
with his work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch.
Watch, therefore; you do not know when the lord of the house is
coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or
in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping.
What I say to you, I say to all: 'Watch!'" |
MK 14:17-21 |
When it was evening, he
came with the Twelve. And as they reclined at table and were
eating, Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, one of you will
betray me, one who is eating with me." They began to be
distressed and to say to him, one by one, "Surely it is not
I?" He said to them, "One of the Twelve, the one who
dips with me into the dish. For the Son of Man indeed goes, as
it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man
is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been
born." |
MK 14:37-38,41-42 |
When he returned he
found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could
you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not
undergo the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is
weak."... He returned a third time and said to them,
"Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough.
The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed over
to sinners. Get up, let us go. See, my betrayer is at
hand." |
MK 16:14-18 |
(But) later, as the
eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for
their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not
believed those who saw him after he had been raised. He said to
them, "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to
every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever
does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany
those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they
will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents (with their
hands), and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them.
They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." |
LK 1:5-22 |
In the days of Herod,
King of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah of the priestly
division of Abijah; his wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and
her name was Elizabeth. Both were righteous in the eyes of God,
observing all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord
blamelessly. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren
and both were advanced in years. Once when he was serving as
priest in his division's turn before God, according to the
practice of the priestly service, he was chosen by lot to enter
the sanctuary of the Lord to burn incense. Then, when the whole
assembly of the people was praying outside at the hour of the
incense offering, the angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing
at the right of the altar of incense. Zechariah was troubled by
what he saw, and fear came upon him. But the angel said to him,
"Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been
heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name
him John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will
rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of (the)
Lord. He will drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will be
filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb, and he
will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He
will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the
hearts of fathers toward children and the disobedient to the
understanding of the righteous, to prepare a people fit for the
Lord." Then Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I
know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in
years." And the angel said to him in reply, "I am
Gabriel, who stand before God. I was sent to speak to you and to
announce to you this good news. But now you will be speechless and
unable to talk until the day these things take place, because you
did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper
time." Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah
and were amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary. But when
he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized
that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He was gesturing to
them but remained mute. |
LK 1:46-55 |
And Mary said: "My
soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in
God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One
has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy
is from age to age to those who fear him. He has
shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and
heart. He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted
up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich
he has sent away empty. He has helped Israel his servant,
remembering his mercy, according to his promise to our fathers, to
Abraham and to his descendants forever." |
LK 2:9-14 |
The angel of the Lord
appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and
they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, "Do
not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great
joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of
David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And
this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in
swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." And suddenly there
was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God
and saying: "Glory to God in the highest and on earth
peace to those on whom his favor rests." [Note:
Traditional translation "and on earth peace to men of good
will".] |
LK 2:25-35 |
Now there was a man in
Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and
devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the
Holy Spirit that
he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the
Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents
brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in
regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:
"Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according
to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you
prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to
the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel." The child's
father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and
Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold,
this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a
sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be
revealed." |
LK 3:1-18 |
In the fifteenth year of
the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of
Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip
tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias
was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and
Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the
desert. He went throughout (the) whole region of the Jordan,
proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,
as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah:
"A voice of one crying out in the desert: 'Prepare the way of
the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled
and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads
shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all
flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" He said to the
crowds who came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of
vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good
fruits as evidence of your repentance; and do not begin to say to
yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you, God
can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Even now the
ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does
not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the
fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should
we do?" He said to them in reply, "Whoever has two
cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has
food should do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be
baptized and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we
do?" He answered them, "Stop collecting more than what
is prescribed." Soldiers also asked him, "And what is it
that we should do?" He told them, "Do not practice
extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone, and be satisfied with
your wages." Now the people were filled with expectation, and
all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah.
John answered them all, saying, "I am baptizing you with
water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to
loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand to clear
his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the
chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Exhorting
them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people. |
LK 6:20-26 |
And raising his eyes
toward his disciples he said: "Blessed are you who are poor,
for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now
hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now
weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you,
and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as
evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on
that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their
ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. But woe to you
who are rich, for you have received your consolation. But woe to
you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who
laugh now, for you will grieve and weep. Woe to you when all speak
well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in
this way." |
LK 6:27-45 |
"But to you who
hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the
person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even
your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who
takes what is yours do not demand it back. Do to others as you
would have them do to you. For if you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is
that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those
from whom you expect repayment, what credit (is) that to you? Even
sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But rather,
love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting
nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be
children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the
ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as (also) your
Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged.
Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you
will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good
measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be
poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you." And he told them
a parable, "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will
not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the
teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his
teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but
do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to
your brother, 'Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,'
when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You
hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you
will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye. A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten
tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For
people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather
grapes from brambles. A good person out of the store of goodness
in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store
of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the
mouth speaks." |
LK 6:46-49 |
"Why do you call
me, 'Lord, Lord,' but not do what I command? I will show you
what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and
acts on them. That one is like a person building a house, who dug
deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the
river burst against that house but could not shake it because it
had been well built. But the one who listens and does not act
is like a person who built a house on the ground without a
foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once
and was completely destroyed." |
LK 8:4-15 |
When a large crowd
gathered, with people from one town after another journeying to
him, he spoke in a parable. "A sower went out to sow his
seed. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path and was
trampled, and the birds of the sky ate it up. Some seed fell on
rocky ground, and when it grew, it withered for lack of moisture.
Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and
choked it. And some seed fell on good soil, and when it grew, it
produced fruit a hundredfold." After saying this, he called
out, "Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear." Then his
disciples asked him what the meaning of this parable might be. He
answered, "Knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God
has been granted to you; but to the rest, they are made known
through parables so that 'they may look but not see, and hear but
not understand.' This is the meaning of the parable. The
seed is the word of God. Those on the path are the ones who have
heard, but the devil comes and takes away the word from their
hearts that they may not believe and be saved. Those on rocky
ground are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with
joy, but they have no root; they believe only for a time and fall
away in time of trial. As for the seed that fell among thorns,
they are the ones who have heard, but as they go along, they are
choked by the anxieties and riches and pleasures of life, and they
fail to produce mature fruit. But as for the seed that fell on
rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have heard the word,
embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through
perseverance." |
LK 8:16-18 |
"No one who lights
a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather,
he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the
light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become
visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to
light. Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will
be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have
will be taken away." |
LK 9:1-6 |
He summoned the Twelve
and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure
diseases, and he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to
heal (the sick). He said to them, "Take nothing for the
journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and
let no one take a second tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay
there and leave from there. And as for those who do not welcome
you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in
testimony against them." Then they set out and went from
village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases
everywhere. |
LK 9:23-27 |
Then he said to all, "If
anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up
his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life
will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or
forfeit himself? Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the
Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his glory and in
the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. Truly I say to
you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until
they see the kingdom of God." |
LK 9:37-45 |
On the next day, when
they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. There was
a man in the crowd who cried out, "Teacher, I beg you, look
at my son; he is my only child. For a spirit seizes him and he
suddenly screams and it convulses him until he foams at the mouth;
it releases him only with difficulty, wearing him out. I begged
your disciples to cast it out but they could not." Jesus said
in reply, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long
will I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here."
As he was coming forward, the demon threw him to the ground in a
convulsion; but Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy,
and returned him to his father. And all were astonished by the
majesty of God. While they were all amazed at his every deed, he
said to his disciples, "Pay attention to what I am telling
you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men." But they
did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them
so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask
him about this saying. |
LK 9:46-48 |
An argument arose among
the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized
the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by
his side and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my
name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who
sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one
who is the greatest." |
LK 9:51-56 |
When the days for his
being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey
to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they
entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there,
but they would not welcome him because the destination of his
journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this
they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from
heaven to consume them?" Jesus turned and rebuked them,
and they journeyed to another village. |
LK 9:57-62 |
As they were proceeding
on their journey someone said to him, "I will follow you
wherever you go." Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens
and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to
rest his head." And to another he said, "Follow
me." But he replied, "(Lord,) let me go first and
bury my father." But he answered him, "Let the dead bury
their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
And another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let
me say farewell to my family at home." (To him) Jesus said,
"No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was
left behind is fit for the kingdom of God." |
LK 10:1-12 |
After this the Lord
appointed seventy (-two) others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs
to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them,
"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the
master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go
on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along
the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this
household.' If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest
on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same
house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer
deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set
before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of
God is at hand for you.' Whatever town you enter and they do
not receive you, go out into the streets and say, 'The dust of
your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against
you.' Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand. I tell you, it
will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town." |
LK 10:13-15 |
"Woe to you,
Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done
in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago
have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be
more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.
And as for you, Capernaum, 'Will you be exalted to heaven? You
will go down to the netherworld.'" |
LK 10:16 |
"Whoever listens to you
listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever
rejects me rejects the one who sent me." |
LK 10:21-22 |
At that very moment he
rejoiced (in) the Holy Spirit and said, "I give you praise,
Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden
these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them
to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one
knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is
except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him." |
LK 10:38-42 |
As they continued their
journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha
welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary (who) sat beside the
Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with
much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her
to help me." The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha,
Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is
need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it
will not be taken from her." |
LK 11:1-4 |
He was praying in a
certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said
to him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his
disciples." He said to them, "When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day
our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves
forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final
test." |
LK 11:9-13 |
"And I tell you,
ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the
door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and
the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will
be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when
he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an
egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven
give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" |
LK 11:14-26 |
He was driving out a
demon (that was) mute, and when the demon had gone out, the mute
person spoke and the crowds were amazed. Some of them said,
"By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives
out demons." Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from
heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every
kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will
fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how
will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I
drive out demons. If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by
whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be
your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that (I) drive out
demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong
man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. But
when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away
the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. Whoever
is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me
scatters. When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it
roams through arid regions searching for rest but, finding none,
it says, 'I shall return to my home from which I came.' But upon
returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order. Then it goes
and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself who
move in and dwell there, and the last condition of that person is
worse than the first." |
LK 11:29-32 |
While still more people
gathered in the crowd, he said to them, "This generation
is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given
it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to
the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At
the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this
generation and she will condemn them, because she came from
the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is
something greater than Solomon here. At the judgment the men of
Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because
at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something
greater than Jonah here." |
LK 11:33-36 |
"No one who lights
a lamp hides it away or places it (under a bushel basket), but on
a lampstand so that those who enter might see the light. The
lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is sound, then your
whole body is filled with light, but when it is bad, then your
body is in darkness. Take care, then, that the light in you not
become darkness. If your whole body is full of light, and no
part of it is in darkness, then it will be as full of light as a
lamp illuminating you with its brightness." |
LK 11:37-54 |
After he had spoken, a
Pharisee invited him to dine at his home. He entered and reclined
at table to eat. The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not
observe the prescribed washing before the meal. The Lord said to
him, "Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside
of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and
evil. You fools! Did not the maker of the outside also make
the inside? But as to what is within, give alms, and behold,
everything will be clean for you. Woe to you Pharisees! You pay
tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb, but you pay no
attention to judgment and to love for God. These you should have
done, without overlooking the others. Woe to you Pharisees! You
love the seat of honor in synagogues and greetings in
marketplaces. Woe to you! You are like unseen graves over which
people unknowingly walk." Then one of the scholars of the
law said to him in reply, "Teacher, by saying this you are
insulting us too." And he said, "Woe also to you
scholars of the law! You impose on people burdens hard to carry,
but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them. Woe to
you! You build the memorials of the prophets whom your ancestors
killed. Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the
deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the
building. Therefore, the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them
prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute'
in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of
all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the
blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar
and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be
charged with their blood! Woe to you, scholars of the law! You
have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter
and you stopped those trying to enter." When he left, the
scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and
to interrogate him about many things, for they were plotting to
catch him at something he might say. |
LK 12:1-10 |
Meanwhile, so many
people were crowding together that they were trampling one another
underfoot. He began to speak, first to his disciples,
"Beware of the leaven - that is, the hypocrisy - of the
Pharisees. There is nothing concealed that will not be
revealed, nor secret that will not be known. Therefore whatever
you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what
you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the
housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who
kill the body but after that can do no more. I shall show you whom
to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to
cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. Are
not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them
has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have
all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many
sparrows. I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others
the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God. But
whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels
of God. Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man
will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit
will not be forgiven." |
LK 12:16-21 |
Then he told them a
parable. "There was a rich man whose land produced a
bountiful harvest. He asked himself, 'What shall I do, for I do
not have space to store my harvest?' And he said, 'This is what I
shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There
I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to
myself, "Now as for you, you have so many good things stored
up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!"' But God
said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of
you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?'
Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but
is not rich in what matters to God." |
LK 12:33-34 |
"Sell your belongings
and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear
out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach
nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your
heart be." |
LK 12:35-53 |
"Gird your loins
and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's
return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and
knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant
on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have
them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he
come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this
way, blessed are those servants. Be sure of this: if the master of
the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would
not have let his house be broken into. You also must be
prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will
come." Then Peter said, "Lord, is this parable meant
for us or for everyone?" And the Lord replied, "Who,
then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put
in charge of his servants to distribute (the) food allowance at
the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on
arrival finds doing so. Truly, I say to you, he will put him in
charge of all his property. But if that servant says to
himself, 'My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the
menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk,
then that servant's master will come on an unexpected day and at
an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a
place with the unfaithful. That servant who knew his master's will
but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will
shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his
master's will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating
shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person
entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person
entrusted with more. I have come to set the earth on fire,
and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism
with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until
it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish
peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now
on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two
against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son
against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter
against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." |
LK 12:54-56 |
He also said to the
crowds, "When you see (a) cloud rising in the west you say
immediately that it is going to rain - and so it does; and when you
notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is
going to be hot - and so it is. You hypocrites! You know how to
interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not
know how to interpret the present time?" |
LK 12:57-59 |
"Why do you not
judge for yourselves what is right? If you are to go with your
opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter
on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the
judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the
constable throw you into prison. I say to you, you will not be
released until you have paid the last penny." |

BIG Book of Latin Activities For Catholics
Beginning - Intermediate (Vol. 1)
"Suitable For Children Or
Adults!" ~ "Perfect For Home Schoolers!"
+ + +
As many faithful Catholics already know,
the majestic
Latin language – the 'official language' of the Catholic Church –
promotes unity, helps safeguard the purity of doctrine, connects us with
our Catholic ancestors, allows us to pray in "one voice", and even ties
back to the inscription on the Cross which was written in Hebrew, Latin,
and Greek. The Latin language is still used today in the precious
treasure that is the
Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, in 'everyday speech' (much of
English is derived from Latin), in mottos, in specialized fields, and in
educational endeavors. It has been shown that the study of Latin brings
many benefits. "And, Latin is truly the language of heaven!"
If you enjoy Latin, you may be glad to know that
this full-sized (8.5" x 11"), tradition-minded publication features an
assortment of activity types related to Latin (including: word searches,
crosswords, coloring activities, challenges, fill-ins, spelling bee,
quizzes, unscrambles, true/false, multiple choice, matching, cross-offs,
circling, word associations, translation exercises, and more...), and
treats of various topics (including: common Latin words, Latin language
facts, Latin grammar, nouns & verbs, abbreviations,
phrases / sayings / mottos, prefixes, cardinal numbers, grammatical gender,
inflection, word roots, diacritics / accenting, pronunciation, Latin
prayers / hymns, Scripture verses, Catholic phrases, and more...).
