Although God is a
spirit and has no bodily form (excepting Jesus after the
Incarnation), He is sometimes represented as a dove as it corresponds to the
following Scripture passages...
Mt. 3:16:
"After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens
were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and)
coming upon him."
Mk. 1:10: "On
coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit,
like a dove, descending upon him."
Lk. 3:22: "[T]he
holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from
heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.'"
Jn. 1:32: "John
testified further, saying, 'I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky
and remain upon him.'"
Of course God does not
typically have the form of a dove, but He took on this form for mankind's
benefit.
Note that God may also
be represented as a lamb or a lion.
