Besides assisting your
friend with prayer – especially the
Rosary and prayers to
St. Joseph – and other applicable aid, it's good to consider whether a
priest should be called. If the sickness is (or may become) serious, your friend
should receive all applicable sacraments & blessings. If you are not sure
whether or not sacraments should be dispensed, you might "err on the side of
caution" and request the priest to come anyways. You might also ensure the
person is (safely) wearing a
scapular and has access to a crucifix, holy images, and a rosary (or similar
items that are safe given their physical condition).
Note: The
above assumes your friend is Catholic. If your friend is not Catholic, you might
try to get them to pray 'Act
of Contrition' type prayer(s) with you. If they are very ill, perhaps you
could pray aloud and ask them to pray silently with you if they are able. If
they have not been baptized, you could request a priest perform a
baptism (or conditional baptism), if applicable. In more urgent cases, you
might perform the baptism/conditional baptism yourself, if appropriate.
