IMHO, past apparitions
(e.g. Fatima, Lourdes, etc.) that are completely orthodox (small 'o'), are
supported by indisputable miracles, are free of legitimate controversy, have
proven good fruits, and which received unqualified Church approval prior to
Vatican II may be
considered very trustworthy. As for more recent alleged apparitions and alleged
private revelations, I think it is
wise to be cautious because most are false and because many people are misled by
them. Remember that we do not need anything from an apparition for salvation. A
couple relevant quotes are below...
"Faith rests on
divine revelations made through the prophets and apostles and set down in the
canonical Scriptures, not on revelations, if there be any, made to other holy
teachers." (St. Thomas Aquinas, Doctor of the Church and "greatest theologian in
the history of the Church")
"The devil is
most pleased when he sees that people desire to accept revelations and are
inclined toward them. For then he has an excellent opportunity to inject errors
and disparage faith as much as possible." (St. John of the Cross, Doctor of the
Church)
Remember that the
Church is unable to guarantee the authenticity of any apparition outside of Holy
Scripture with "absolute certainty."
