We thank your son for
his service. To answer your question, there are a number of patron saints
associated with the military – for our list, please see
here (select "Military" from the drop down list, click the Submit/Search button,
and scroll down to view the list). I counted almost 20 entries total.
For St. Christopher,
we do not have him listed specifically as patron saint of the military [he is
listed for Motorists, Safe Journeys, Sailors, Sports, Travel, Sudden Death
(against)...]. However, I do see that a number of other sites sell medals that
list St. Christopher in connection with the Military.
It would be difficult
for me to say which patron saint would be "best" as this is really a personal
decision. You can look at how close the patronage matches the situation (for
example, you mention protection in battle – IMHO, that would seem to favor St.
Michael, whereas protection in travel would seem to favor St. Christopher). You
might also want to consider whether your son is named after any of the patron
saints associated with the military, or whether your son (or you?) have a
particular devotion to one of the patron saints for the military, or if a saint
has been particularly efficacious for you in the past, or if there are any known
similarities between your son and any of the patron saints for the military (of
course St. Michael is an angel, but still there are some known qualities about
him), etc. Finally, as a practical matter, since your son will presumably be
wearing the medal in difficult conditions, it might be wise to consider factors
such as the size, durability, weight, comfort, etc. of the various medallions
that may be available.
