Is childlessness in marriage sinful?

It is not sinful for a married couple to be childless as long as neither the husband or the wife are intentionally causing the childlessness (e.g. via contraception, intentional sterility, using NFP illicitly). Although children are the supreme gift of marriage, not every married couple is given the gift of children. In fact, being childless is a source of suffering for many married couples. If conditions warrant, it may be useful for a childless couple to consult appropriate pro-life fertility specialist(s), but note that certain procedures are illicit (for example, IVF is illicit - see here for more information). If applicable, the couple might also consider adoption. In any event, the couple should not despair, keeping in mind biblical passages such as...

"Yes, blessed is she who, childless and undefiled, knew not transgression of the marriage bed; she shall bear fruit at the visitation of souls." (Wisdom 3:13)

"...rather die childless than have godless children!" (Sirach 16:3)
