"USUAL
CONDITIONS, ON THE. A plenary indulgence granted in these terms involves the
necessity, in addition to doing the good works prescribed, of receiving the
sacraments of
Penance and the
Eucharist of praying for the intentions of the
pope.
These are ordinarily: the common good of the Church, the spread of the faith,
conversion of sinners,
heretics and schismatics, and peace; it is not necessary
to advert to these in detail.
Our Father,
Hail Mary, and
Glory be, or similar prayers, will suffice. Any church may be visited [if
required] unless one is specified. Confession may be made within eight days
before or eight days after the day on which the indulgence is to be gained;
communion received the day before or within eight days after... To gain any
indulgence it is probably necessary to have at least an implicit intention to do
so [Note: 1983 Code Canon Law Can. 996 §2 says: 'a capable subject must have at least the general intention' of obtaining indulgences (emphasis added)], and [it is
necessary] to have a contrite heart, i.e., be in a state of grace. Moreover, if
the prescribed good work is the recital of a prayer or other form of words,
these words must be articulated with the lips (not necessarily said aloud); to
read them with the eyes or say them in the mind is not sufficient." (Catholic
