"FERIA (Lat.,
originally meaning holiday, free-day). i. The liturgical name for all days of
the week except Sunday (Dies Dominica) and Saturday (Sabbatum), thus: Monday,
feria Secunda; Tuesday, f. Tertia; Wednesday, f. Quarta; Thursday, f. Quinta;
Friday, f. Sexta; the second, third and so on days. The feriæ are major or

September ember days, which have precedence over a simple feast in the Roman
calendar; the Mass and Office of Ash Wednesday and the first three days of Holy
Week are privileged and never displaced. The above are the ordinary names for
the days of the week in the vernacular of Portugal (Domingo, Segundo feira,
etc., Sabado).
