"ALB (Lat., tunica alba, white tunic). A white linen vestment reaching from neck to ankles, with tight-fitting sleeves and confined by a girdle, put on after the amice. It is principally used by the celebrant and ministers at Mass. It is permitted to ornament it with embroidery, apparels, or lace, but no decoration should detract from its character as a long white linen garment. The alb is probably derived from the under-tunic of the Romans and Greeks; it has now a symbolic significance of purity of heart." (Catholic Dictionary)
