"ABLUTION. The washing of the thumbs and index-fingers of the celebrant at Mass after the communion, in order to remove any particles of the Blessed Sacrament that may be adhering thereto. The ablution is performed by the server pouring wine and water on to the thumbs and fingers of the priest, which are held over the chalice. The priest then drinks the wine and water (also called the ablution or the ablutions) and dries his lips and then the chalice with the purificator." (Catholic Dictionary)
