According to the
Catechism of the Council of Trent, the chief requirements of true contrition
are: a detestation of our sins, the intention of confessing and making
satisfaction for our sins, and a firm purpose of amendment of our life. The
Catechism of the Council of Trent also states that...
"...not less
necessary for contrition than the other chief conditions is a care that it be
accompanied by entire forgiveness of the injures which we may have received from
others. This our Lord and Savior admonishes when He declares: If you will
forgive men their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your
offenses; but if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you
your offenses (Matt. vi. 14)."
